Eyes Below the eye at the muzzle, trim the top of the muzzle short at an angle just under the eyes so they can see easily. This makes it easier to clean around the eyes also. Muzzle The beard and moustache should be layered and trimmed into a circular shape, rather than blunt - aim for around cm in length. Body the body can be trimmed to whatever length suits the lifestyle. Tail should be evened up. If the body is left long, the tummy can be trimmed shorter, or even shaved in summer to keep the dog cool. Trim the hair between the pads, so the pads touch the ground. Trim the nails. Taper the hind quarters to the tail gradually. Brush and trim the tail to a natural length, and trim underneath. Private Parts Shave or trim close the dogs private area to keep clean and free from matting and any dags. While the adult coat is establishing, you will need to brush multiple times a week, and I find this the best time to give your pet his first trim. It will be difficult to keep up with the matting in the longer coat, but with a trim, it is very manageable, and the beauty of the adult coat is better realized. Once your dog gets to 12 to 14 months, the adult coat will be fully established, and this is the coat you can expect to work with for your dog's adult life. I find that the picture to the right will help to clarify the instructions you will need to convey for your dog's face. It is best to print this picture and take it with you to the groomer. A three-fourths inch blade don't go shorter than one-half inch will keep your dog's coat nice and full but give a smooth consistent length all over. If you like your dogs coat longer, your groomer should have a guard they can use to achieve this. The legs are typically just a little longer than the rest of the coat if you trim the coat to three-fourths inch. FEET: The feet will need a "slipper" cut to achieve the floppy, full leg look. The leg will look like a column. TAIL: The tail needs to be de-matted and trimmed. It is also important to have the hair removed, either trimmed or pulled, inside the dog's ears. There is also little to no smell. In fact, I do not find the need to bathe my dogs between grooming visits unless they have gotten into mud or my boys have accidentally dropped something on them. Having said that, brushing your Australian Labradoodle every day is important as it is for any pet. Daily grooming helps keep the coat in good condition by: Removing dirt. Spreading the natural oils throughout the coat. Preventing tangles from forming. Keeping the skin clean and free from irritation. It is also good to have a pin brush as well. For us, this short, individual time spent with each of my Australian Labradoodles each day is a soothing and bonding time. They look forward to being groomed and get jealous of each other when it is not their turn! Australian Labradoodle Coat When the Australian Labradoodle coat gets about weeks past grooming, mats can begin setting up if you are not brushing your dog daily. You should get a mat splitter to have on hand in case of these situations. As they get older, they will grow a thicker coat. It is best to start with the wider pinned slicker and then use the closer pinned slicker. How to Brush your Australian Labradoodle Brush up, down, and sideways until there is no congestion or mats in the hair. Practice will help or ask a groomer for some tips. It is best to start brushing your pet at an early age. I learned this the hard way as I got my first Australian Labradoodle when she was already five months old. Starting early helps the dog to learn to enjoy the time and not panic. Like children, puppies have short attention spans. They will require some special attention. Select a time when the puppy is less energetic. Begin with short grooming sessions, five minutes or so. Constantly talk to your puppy in a gentle, reassuring tone while grooming to make him feel comfortable. Be sure to check his ears, paws, teeth, and underside during the grooming procedure. This will, in time, make him accustomed to being handled and examined. Eventually, he will be quite comfortable being groomed, and will look forward to these sessions with you. But do not despair if your Labradoodle is an older animal. It is possible to train one to enjoy grooming. Proceed slowly, and be sure to use treats and plenty of praise to make the experience fun! Importantly, do not wait until your Australian Labradoodle is beginning to mat as then brushing will always be associated with being an uncomfortable and long ordeal. Daily Grooming can be a special time for the two of you each day. However, they need to get accustom to being handled. They should be brushed, have their ears and teeth looked at, and nails handled or trimmed every day. At around nine to sixteen months the adult coat starts to grow in. The puppy coat does not fall out and will start to cause matts. Brushing thoroughly to pull the puppy coat out from the new adult hair is necessary. This could be a good time to consider a good clip to ease the amount of brushing and formation of mats. It is important to start introducing your puppy to the groomer early so when he is older he will be comfortable with the grooming process. Once your Labradoodle puppy has had all of his shots, he can safely be taken to the groomer. Up to this point, handling and brushing your puppy everyday will prepare him for his first trip to the groomer. Let the groomer know you have a puppy and want to have an introductory visit. Even just for your puppy to meet and have a nail clip might be enough to start a good, calm rapport with the groomer. Follow up visits can begin to include a simple session of brushing, washing, drying, nail clip and ear hair pluck. Your puppy and groomer will be thankful for these small visits every weeks so puppy can get used to all of the sights, sounds and sensations till he is ready for a full clip. Grooming Your Adult Labradoodle You can maintain a long fleece coat with thorough brushing weekly. A curly fleece will need more attention than a wavy fleece. Curlier coats will be easier to maintain if it is kept shorter. Many owners have their labradoodles clipped two to four times a year depending on personal preference, lifestyle and curliness of the fleece. They get a full groom with a 1. For your doodle to not look like a poodle, talk to your groomer about what you want. Pictures of a well groomed labradoodle can help. Regular bathing is mostly unnecessary. Even after getting muddy, it will dry and fall off or can be brushed out. If you take your Labradoodle to the groomer regularly, they should take care of the nails adequately. Pay special attention to the ears. The hair in and around the outside of the ear canal clogs the inside and prevents air flow. This can cause ear infections. The hair needs to be pulled out of the ear canal and kept trimmed around the opening and under the ear. This can be done every months. Your groomer should be doing this and will keep it maintained. Also, if you do not use a groomer often, make sure the hair around the anus does not get too long and cause problems with waste build up. Brushing Your Labradoodle When your Labradoodle has short hair, an inch or two, regular brushing with a pin brush or slicker can work just fine. Once the hair gets longer, it is important to make sure you are reaching all the way to the base of the hair. If not, loose hair is not removed below the surface and matts will begin to form. If that hair builds up, it is not going to be possible to clip the hair at a decent length and the only alternative will be to shave the hair close to the skin. In order to keep a coat longer than and inch or so, you will want to use a technique called line brushing. Line Brushing It is simply done by parting the coat with your free hand and brushing the loose hair on the other side of the part, starting at the base of the hair. With every other stroke or so, you can bring down a small bit of the hair being held up by your hand. You will slowly move your hand up that section of coat. Start low on a section of the body and work your way up. Using the edge of the pin brush, start brushing from the part, down the length of the hair. Complete the stroke to the end of the hair. Repeat till smooth and ready to continue. Pick up a small amount of hair from the other side of the part to continue the process, working your way up that section of the body.

One of the most visible indicators that your Frenchie needs to lose weight is if they are unable to climb up steps and stairs like they did before. They are unable to groom and scratch themselves Whilst Frenchies cannot clean certain areas of their body , they can still lick and scratch themselves. If you notice your dog is unable to scratch and groom himself like he used to, it could be because the flexibility has been replaced with weight gain fat. How can I get my French Bulldog to lose weight? If you are concerned that your fat French Bulldog puppy is overweight or that your adult Frenchie is no longer at a healthy weight anymore, then here are some tips on what to do. Feed them lighter dog food And by that, I mean dog food with less calories, higher in fiber, and more protein. By doing so your Frenchie will burn the calories off faster and will lose weight quicker as a result. Vets say that dogs should not eat anything more than 25 calories for every pound they weigh. The average male Frenchie weighs around 25 pounds, meaning your dog may only need calories a day. You should always read the guidelines written on commercial dog food packaging, and if in doubt please read my guide to how much Frenchies should eat to stay healthy. But please do this on advice of your vet. You might be surprised at how many extra calories your overweight French Bulldog takes on from picking up scraps in the kitchen or dropped from the table. I try to walk Claude twice a day if I can, each time taking up around 30 minutes. I think this is probably why my Frenchie is very trim and muscular, rather than being a fatty. Weigh your Frenchie regularly If you have got a fat French Bulldog who needs to go on a diet to lose weight, then you should have a target in mind. The weight target is something your vet can advise on. Once you have that target weight in mind, I recommend regular weighing sessions, probably every couple of days. This will help you to keep them on target. Weighing a fat Frenchie is actually quite easy. Weigh yourself on the scales first, then pick your dog up and weigh yourself again. The difference in weight is what your overweight Frenchie comes in at. Neutering which can lead to less energy. Bloating and water retention due to illness. Canine medication. Excellent nutrition is important in order to have a healthy and happy dog. There are many varieties of food out there; wet, dry, freeze dried, raw, or cooked. Regardless of what food you decide on, they do need to be on a high-quality and nutritionally balanced dog food. What are the signs of high-quality dog food? The food should contain lean meat-based protein sources such as chicken , turkey , pork and beef. Feeding Your French Bulldog at Different Life Stages Once your puppy is fully grown, generally, between months of age they will progress on adult dog food. As young puppies, they have a huge requirement for calories and high-quality ingredients to promote puppy growth. Puppies grow rapidly during the first six months of their life and they continue growing more after this period. Without proper nutrition, they might be stunted and underweight. So, how much should a Frenchie really weigh? French Bulldogs are small sized dogs, with small legs, and bulky bodies. Therefore, they should not weigh a whole lot, or they can become prone to obesity and can become overweight. A typical male French Bulldog should weigh between 20 to 28 pounds, and is usually about 11 to 12 inches in height. In comparison, female French Bulldogs weigh from 18 to 26 pounds, and are generally between 11 to 12 inches in height. That being said, the ideal weight for a French Bulldog will depend on a range of factors such as body shape, genetics and health conditions. Frenchies are prone to a lot of health conditions due to their shortened noses and flat faces. However, many people are unaware that weight gain is another common issue for a Frenchie. So, why are French Bulldogs prone to weight gain? Well, it is mostly because of the fact that they just love food. Frenchies love to eat and munch on anything they can find, and will find it difficult to self regulate when it comes to eating. This means that they will eat and eat until someone stops them! As they are such small dogs, an overweight Frenchie will struggle if it is overweight, and will not be able to carry itself well, and may struggle to go on walks or get up any stairs. This can seriously reduce their quality of life. The recommended calories for a Frenchie is about 15 calories in every pound that the dog weighs, if they are of a healthy weight. You may want to feed your Frenchie just once a day if they are struggling with obesity. You should also never feed your French Bulldog human food, and only give them their recommended daily amount. If you have a Frenchie, then you also have a responsibility to watch over your dog, and ensure that there are no changes to their health that could pose a risk to them. To do this, you need to complete some routine checks of your French Bulldog. We recommend that you either weigh your Frenchie to keep track of their weight, or do your own manual checks. To do a manual check, you will need to apply a small bit of pressure to the chest of your Frenchie. By pressing down with your fingers gently, you will need to see whether you can feel the ribcage. If you cannot feel the ribcage, and only fatty, fleshy pouches, then your dog may be a little too overweight. Another easy way to check if your Frenchie is overweight, is to check whether the chest is wider than the abdomen. If it is not wider than the abdomen, then the dog may be too overweight. Signs Of An Overweight Frenchie There are other signs that you can look for to see if your Frenchie is fat or overweight. For instance, there are some visual indicators that your Frenchie needs to lose weight. Visual Signs If they seem to have a layer of fat around the stomach, ribs and neck, then it could be a sign that they need to lose some weight. A healthy sized Frenchie will have an hourglass shape from above, and their waistline should be slightly visible. Again, the belly should not be wider than the chest. If it is, then the French Bulldog is overweight. In addition, when the dog curls up to go to sleep, you may notice that the spine is slightly visible, but has a thin layer of fat over it. If you cannot see the spine at all when the dog is curled up in a sleeping position, then it could be time for your pooch to drop a few pounds! If you think that your dog is overweight, you should speak to a veterinarian before you make any major dietary changes. If you give your dog new or different food, you will need to wean them off the old food first and make the change slowly in order to avoid any sickness and diarrhea. Inability Other signs that your dog has become overweight are if they are now unable to do things. For instance, if your dog cannot groom itself, walk up the stairs, lick or scratch itself and generally struggles to move around, then they may need to lose some weight. Losing weight will give them extra flexibility and range of movement. Overexertion Frenchies are known for their heavy breathing due to their flat faces, however, they can start getting even more breathless when they are overexerted. They may begin panting after exercise or strenuous activity , which is actually normal. What is not normal is if a French Bulldog is very exerted after a short walk or activity. This can be an indicator that the dog is overweight, as it is struggling to carry its own weight around. If your Frenchie seems to struggle to walk, to climb up stairs or to run around, then it may be too overweight for its size. You will know that your French Bulldog is too fat or bigger than it should be when it seems overexerted and overwhelmed by simple activities and non strenuous exercises. If this is the case, then you may need to speak to the veterinarian about implementing a diet and fitness plan for your furry friend. A whole host of health problems and conditions could be the cause for the rapid weight gain. For instance, some French Bulldogs may gain weight due to medication that they are on, whereas others will gain weight due to chronic illnesses such as diabetes or hypothyroidism. Other reasons could be water retention and bloating due to health problems, sickness or illness, whereas other Frenchies may gain weight due to internal parasites. Some of the most common reasons Frenchies gain weight are possible pregnancies, or if the dog has recently been neutered, which can result in lethargy and a lack of energy. Other Frenchies will become less energetic and active as they age, which can also result in weight gain due to a lack of exercise. Tips To Keep Your Frenchie Healthy If you are worried about your French Bulldog gaining weight rapidly, and their health declining, then there are a few things that you can do to prevent this. More dog owners than you think guess and estimate how much food their dog should be having, rather than stick to the correct guidelines. This can result in overfeeding and weight gain, especially if you also offer your dog treats and little bits of human food. You should also consult th guidelines on the specific dog food that you are giving your Frenchie. Frenchies should be fed about calories per pound of body weight, but this should be the ideal body weight. As always, consult a veterinarian if you are unsure what food to give your French Bulldog. This is so your Frenchie can burn off excess calories and fat, and will still have energy and minerals from the protein. As mentioned above, Frenchies only need about 25 calories per pound of body weight, so if your average French Bulldog weighs about 27 pounds, then they should be eating no more than calories a day. Restrict Treats French Bulldogs can be prone to gaining weight rapidly. So, what would you do if you started gaining weight quickly? You would cut out the snacks! The same goes for your Frenchie. If your Frenchie is piling on the pounds, then you should stop giving them as many treats. In addition, you need to be wary of your Frenchie taking foods from other people in the house. Frenchies love to poach foods from humans, and they will scavenge for scraps that they can find on the floor or in the kitchen. So, try to restrict the treats! To help your French Bulldog shed the excess weight, you may need to reduce the portion sizes that you are feeding them. Make sure you consult a veterinarian first. Implement Exercise Some dogs are fed the right amount, not overfed any treats or human food and they still gain weight. This is usually because they cannot burn it off. If your dog is not getting enough exercise, then the pounds will all start to add up. Now, Frenchies are not very agile creatures, but they still need regular exercise and walks, just not for too long as they have very small legs and are prone to overheating. However, they should be walked at least once a day. Monitor Weight If your Frenchie is overweight, then you have to monitor them. For breeds like Labradors who are designed to want to hold things in their mouths, this is pretty important! Resource guarding is when a dog protects a resource from being taken by someone else — dog or human. For some reason, there is a solid list of things puppies find irresistible: Socks. Labrador house training routines. We want them to learn to wait until they are outdoors before emptying their bladder or bowels. It is about maturity too. We need to understand that tiny puppies have immature bodies and are not physically capable of waiting very long. On your side There are two factors on your side in the potty training process. When it comes to bladder control, fortunately your puppy improves with every day that passes, so this factor does not work against you forever. The same applies to the fact that the puppy has been removed from his nest, he will soon learn to accept his new nest. The principles of puppy potty training The puppy is learning the principle of extending the nest area, which he keeps clean instinctively, to include your entire home. Punishment is counter-productive in this process as it teaches the puppy to avoid emptying himself in your presence. Rewards are helpful, but given the right routine, a puppy will naturally learn to be clean without them. The secret to successful house training lies in selecting targets that the puppy can achieve. If your puppy sometimes needs to wee every 15 minutes whilst he is awake and active, you will have to take him outside every 15 minutes. Restricted access Start small applies here too. Allow your puppy access only to a small part of your home. Increase the area he has access to, only when he is capable of keeping the current area clean. Just because he can. And because the sensation of a filling bladder is a new one. Your job is to teach him to wait a little longer. You do this by confining him for a short time, every time his bladder fills. You can confine him in his nest within a crate , or in your arms. He will be reluctant to wee in either location. If he wets himself, you have waited too long! It takes two You need to go outside with your puppy, and stay out there with him, each time he needs to wee. A tiny puppy is unlikely to empty himself on his own. This especially applies in cold or wet weather. Routines Matter When House Training a Labrador Retriever Based around these practical requirements you can create your own house training routine. For a puppy that needs to wee every half an hour, it will go something like this Take puppy outside to the toilet area and wait with him until he empties himself Bring him indoors and allow him free access to your kitchen for fifteen to twenty minutes Crate or cuddle the puppy until it is thirty minute since his last wee Take the puppy back out to the toilet area If at any time the puppy does not empty himself then confine him for another ten minutes and try again. As soon as he is regularly not needing to wee after thirty minutes you can extend the duration of free access to your kitchen. Provided you stick to these principles and strategies, the house training process, though quite intense for a short while, will pass smoothly. Print Early obedience first step to better hunting dog Labrador puppies start out sweet and innocent. All you want to do is cuddle up with your pup and love them! And you should! But rest assured the innocence will not last. As your pup gains confidence and courage, they will begin to test you in many ways. That is why you must obedience train your Labrador puppy. Early obedience training is key to establishing borders and boundaries that will help your puppy grow, learn, and adjust with a good attitude. There is no shortcut to doing this, just use the name often when you talk to your puppy. Over time, the pup will start to respond to the name. Socialization, while not technically obedience training, is the single most important thing you can teach your puppy during the first few months of life. If you are not sure how to do this, refer to this post. Tools needed to obedience train Labrador puppy You will need a few tools to teach your puppy obedience. The products I recommend I believe are a good value or good investment for anyone working to train or maintain training on their retriever. When possible, I include links to the product. Collar — You should purchase a size appropriate collar for your new puppy. You may have to buy new ones as your dog grows, but it is important for your puppy to get used to wearing a collar early on. A simple nylon adjustable collar works great. Chain collar — If your puppy is more than a few months old, a chain or prong collar is extremely helpful in teaching obedience, but they must be used correctly. For more information on how to put a chain collar on your dog correctly refer to this video. A longer lead, called a check cord, is also useful for teaching HERE and retrieving. You can learn more about that here. Heeling stick optional — While optional, a heeling stick can be especially helpful in teaching basic obedience. Treats — Treats are good for teaching very young puppies. I use treats for pups under 12 weeks of age, but treats should be discontinued rather quickly. When to start basic puppy obedience training Obedience training can and should start within the first couple weeks of having your puppy home. Young puppies are ready and willing to learn and teaching obedience to a young puppy is much easier than teaching it to an older dog. How long should obedience sessions be? Most labs do not enjoy obedience training. For this reason, we aim to keep obedience sessions short, especially if your dog is under 4-months of age. Five to ten minutes of obedience a day can work wonders. Especially if you are consistent. Using rewards or praise to teach obedience Many people like to use treats or rewards for obedience training. And this can work, especially with very young dogs. But for hunting dogs, over the long-term treats can become a problem. We do not want our dogs, or the dogs we train to be obedient only because they are getting a food reward. We want them to be obedient because they understand their place in the family and respect the owners. To get these lasting results, we use praise words and petting and a reward that retrievers live for — retrieves! Well-timed praise is a particularly important part of dog training. A message that it is okay to ignore me the first 9 times! This simply means that after a few minutes of formal obedience training, we release the dog with an OKAY command and that means they can run around and be a dog. We then throw a bumper or plug a for the dog to retriever. We do this a few times with a lot of excitement and allow the dog to retrieve the bumper. For retriever breeds, this is often more effective than a food reward. Be careful that you are not letting your puppy get into bad habits with retrieving. For instance, if your puppy often goes out to retrieve the bumper but then runs away with it, or picks it up and drops it, do not continue doing retrieves. While retrieving is a reward for many Labs, it is not an excuse to engage in behaviors that are not going to be acceptable in the field. Introduction to leash and nylon collar The very first step for any puppy obedience is to introduce your puppy to a regular collar and leash. This should be done in two separate steps, first the collar and then the leash. Introduce the collar by putting a nylon type collar on your puppy. This is normal and you should not react to it. Introducing the leash is a little different. We like to do this outside. After a few sessions of this introduction, you can start holding the leash by the end and walking with the puppy. When the puppy tries to run or walk away, hold tight to the leash, and just let the puppy get used to the resistance. Some puppies have a hard time with this and will growl or whine and whip themselves around at the pressure, but most will not. Remain calm and after a few sessions the puppy should get used to the resistance of the leash. Do not allow the puppy to pull you around. That will make for some bad behaviors that you will need to correct later. If you cannot control your puppy with just a regular collar and leash, you may need to move to a chain or prong collar to keep control. What commands to teach Lab puppy There are only four basic obedience commands that you need to teach your young puppy. Remember when it comes to commands, less is more. OKAY — this is a release command, basically tells your dog were done training, go be a dog. As your puppy grows and learns more, there are some other commands that may be needed, but for puppies I like to start with just the four above. Dog training requires consistency Before you start with obedience training, I want to make a note about the importance of consistency. Obedience training only works if you are consistent. This means that when you say a command, you expect the puppy to perform the command, and are willing to take steps to make the puppy perform the command. If you do not remain consistent in this expectation, you will confuse your dog and get poor results from your training. You and your family must be consistent! How to start obedience training Lab puppy The first command you want to start teaching your puppy is SIT. This is quite easy to teach with a small puppy but gets a little tougher as they get bigger. Then release the puppy with the OKAY command. Repeat this process several times, then stop. If your puppy is weeks old, you can repeat this training several times a day for only a couple minutes at a time. This will be a two-person job for a little while. The other person will put the food down a few feet from the puppy. Then release the puppy to eat saying OKAY. As the pup learns and understands the command better, you will no longer need a second person to hold the puppy. You must be a little careful here because young puppies do not have great bladder control and making them wait, even a few seconds, can mean the difference between an accident and them doing their business outside. But this is a great way to teach impulse control and manners to your puppy. I do not want to have to fight for a position by the door. You can usually start working on this within a week or two of teaching SIT. A great way to teach this command to young puppies is to use two people and sit in a long hallway, one at each end. Take turns calling your puppy with a HERE command. A toy or treat can often help the process. Let your puppy run around a bit but hold onto the end of the cord. Occasionally, call you puppy with a HERE command. It can be helpful at first to crouch down to encourage the puppy to run towards you. Then release the puppy with an OKAY command. Do this a few more times and repeat daily until the puppy is coming to you without you needing to pull the cord. It is also the command most of our clients struggle with the most. Mostly because they are using the wrong tool for the job. For heeling work, it is important that you work with a chain or prong collar. This will give you more control and stop the pulling and surging that many people struggle with. Using a chain or prong collar and a six-foot leash, start walking your puppy at your side. If your puppy is young, be sure to use a puppy chain collar which is smaller than chain collars for adult dogs. And make sure that you are putting it on correctly! An alternate tool to a chain collar and leash is the Wonder or Command Lead. These work great for teaching HEEL. As you start walking use gently tugs on the chain collar with the command HERE to keep your puppy at your side. If your puppy surges or pulls ahead, simply make a degree turn and start walking the other direction giving a sharp, upward tug on the chain collar and saying HEEL several times until the dog is back in a heeling position. Many of our clients have told us they never left their driveway the first few days! But if you are patient and consistent, your dog will quickly learn that if they want to go for a walk, they need to stay at your side.
