If possible, watch and play with the parents for 15 minutes. How noisy are they? How much do they need to stop and rest? Behaviour: Ensure parents and pup are friendly and happy, and that you can open their mouths and play with them. It is irrelevant what your breeder tells you about breathing concerns as they pretty much all say their dogs have never had any breathing concerns! There is no testing, standard or certificates for breathing concerns so you need to follow the above guidelines. Shorter, wider necks, narrow nostrils and shorter noses all mean a much higher chance of breathing concerns. Longer noses, longer necks, wider nostrils and narrower chests are less chance of more severe concerns. There are some back scoring systems in place that your breeder may or may not have engaged in. Our concern is the current systems which are employed are grossly inadequate, passing healthy backs that potentially still have severe and significant problems. A grade 3 is a severe deformed vertebrae that has a high chance of causing pain or a prolapsed disc. A grade 2 is a moderately deformed one and a grade 1 a mildly deformed one. An overall score of 15 has been considered a pass, and reasonable to breed from. Potentially, such a score may entail 5 shocking grade 3 vertebrae if no other deformed ones exist , or 10 moderately deformed ones. Ask for the x-rays for both parents and pup if they have been done, and get your own brachycephalic vet to look at them and interpret any score that it comes with. At the very least, ask the exact score, how many of each type of vertebrae and where in the spine they are. There are different areas that carry different risks. In our opinion the standard is severely inadequate for breeding which is allowing this problem to continue. DNA Testing This one worries us the most. DNA testing is done for a number of extremely rare conditions that are almost nonexistent anyway, and none of them test for hemivertebrae or breathing concerns , allergies, hip dysplasia , cherry eyes , or any of the encephalitis seizure problems these breeds can suffer.

They will not want to soil their sleeping area, but if it is much bigger than necessary they might use the extra space as a bathroom. You can find similar pads in pet stores. Toys — It is important to have plenty of chew toys and bones for your puppy. Make sure to stay away from chicken bones or any bones that could splinter or break off and get lodged in their throats. Avoid rawhide, unless it is compressed rawhide which means it is in very small compressed pieces that are digestible. We, and our Frenchies, love the Nylabones — they are made of very durable nylon that will last forever, and our dogs love to chew on them, which is very good for their teeth and gums. One of our favorite toys is braided rope made especially for dogs. Our dogs and puppies have a ball playing tug-a-war and keep-a-way with them. They are very inexpensive they can even be found in most dollar stores and they are extremely durable. The point is to have a nice selection of toys to keep them entertained and out of trouble. Make sure that their toys do not have little parts they could chew off that could get stuck in their throats. Dog shampoo — There are many good dog shampoos on the market and it is really just a matter of personal preference. They can be purchased at any pet store, Walmart, etc. Years ago, when we owned a Yorkie, our vet recommended using baby shampoo because Yorkies tend to frequently get goop around the eyes and the baby shampoo allowed us to clean the area around their eyes without irritating them. We still use baby shampoo with our Frenchies since they have lots of folds on their faces that require regular cleaning. If you do go with a dog shampoo choose a mild formulated shampoo for sensitive skin; your vet may have some good recommendations. In addition to having several good chew toys, which are great for their teeth, you should apply toothpaste to their teeth and gums on a weekly basis. You will notice that it said apply and not brush. Doggie toothpaste has those enzymes. Just put some paste on your finger or a brush and rub it on the teeth and gums. We highly recommend using the kind that has a flat blade on the end of the raking tool versus the kind that has prongs. What we find works best for us is to use a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that is lined with a durable trash bag. The lid keeps foul odors trapped inside. Until our dogs are potty trained, we use old, soft towels and blankets for their bedding, which are very easy to launder. Though it is not a necessity, our dogs love their over-sized pillows and they spend a lot of time sleeping and lounging around on them. We have one that we bought at Petsmart that is 25 inches tall made of durable plastic which is collapsible, fairly light, and easy to set up. If you have a small room in your house such as a laundry room that is puppy proof, you may not need one; however, puppy pens are very practical for many who want to control their precious Frenchie puppy, while at the same time give it some freedom. Because it is is transportable unlike a laundry room , we like to set it up in our main room not on carpet where they can see all that is going on around them and we can see them. We like to keep a soft blanket or towel at one end and their pee pad at the other. Doggie gate same concept as a baby gate — There may initially be areas in your house that you may not want your puppy having free access to roam until completely potty trained. Putting up a doggie gate s will allow your puppy to have a larger area to investigate without getting on carpeted areas or another area you want to make off limits. You can find cute accessories and outfits at pet stores, and there are lots of options on line. Some people do not feel comfortable clipping their dogs nails and will take them to a groomer or vet. However, if you want to save time and money it is a fairly simple task that takes only a few minutes. There are two types of of clippers: a guillotine or a scissor type. The guillotine is the easiest to use. The instructions that come with the clippers will guide you on how to use the instrument. Light claws are easier to cut than dark claws as the blood vessels and nerves that supply the toenail, called the quick, is easier to see. Cut the toenail to within approximately 2 mm of the quick. If you cut into the quick, the toenail will bleed and the dog will experience pain, nothing serious, but they might not sit too still the next time you undertake this task. When cutting dark toenails, it is better to cut just a little off at a time. Some people who have dogs with dark toenails cut them once every week or two so that they only have to trim off a little, avoiding any fear of cutting into the quick. Have More Questions? He is amazing. He is calm yet playful, affectionate, and a total love. Literally nothing phases him. He has been exposed to thunder, fire works, loud mechanical noises, vacuums right up to his crate, umbrellas, and all of the other things people find puppies dislike with no issues. He barked inside of the house for the first time ever two days ago, and it looks like he did so because we had a fox skulking around the house. He prefers to be with us all the time, but has no problem going into his crate when we need him to do so. He is quiet as a mouse from the time we crate him at night until we get him out in the morning typically between pm and 6 am. Training has gone very easily. He has occasional stubborn moments, but for the most part, unless we are working on something brand new or really difficult, we do not need to treat with food any longer as he is extremely responsive to praise and petting. He could not get over how smart and gentle Brady is. Brady is very social, both with people and with other dogs. He goes to puppy play group two days a week and his tail starts wagging the moment the van pulls up at the house to take him there. The biggest training challenges we have had with him came from his desire to meet and greet every person and dog he sees. The last big basic thing that we continue to need to work on is jumping up on new people. If we know someone new is coming to the house, we keep a leash on him and he is getting much better about not jumping. I would say he is 90 percent there. He walks beautifully on a leash until we are about fifty feet from returning to our house, then he gets the zoomies and either pulls or tries to grab the leash. We generally stop and put him into sit, down for few seconds, then resume the walk. Normally we only have to do that once. On the negative side if you are not consistent and develop your role as the leader of the pack you will quickly find that he starts training you. We have never had any issues of aggression towards humans or other animals since we have had him. In fact he at times can be overly friendly and become over excited when greating someone new. He is definitely a conversation piece. We have not met a person yet who in not immediately smitten by him and wants to take him home. He is spunky, playful, and very smart, yet he is also incredibly cuddly and sweet. He is a dog you can wrestle on the ground with, but will also sit in your lap and cuddle. He LOVES my other dogs and has found his place right in the middle…he respects my 75 pound German Shepherd, Stella, as top dog, but has put my 90 pound Goldendoodle, Woody, in his place — bottom of the pack! But Woody is very submissive and fine with that. I was on the fence about getting a tiny Bernedoodle, as I have always been a big-dog person; however, since I already have two big dogs, I felt it was best to get a tiny, and I have to say, I really love his size. He looks bigger than he weighs because of all his hair, and he is easier to travel with. I have taken Hendrix on trips with the family when he was around 3 months old and could still go in a carrier under the seat of the airplane, and he was perfect on every flight, sleeping the entire way. We had our doubts and discussions as we are retired and thought we would not ever get a dog again. Having always had a dog in the house or two and a cat, we missed having one. We are thinking we hit the jackpot with Paco. He has met several new people with the waggiest of little tails for everyone. He is learning simple commands already. He is still not on the loose as we are keeping him safe until he gets all of his shots. We are learning what works and trying to be consistent. This puppy is proving to be very adaptable. He does have his moments, but so far time-outs have proven to settle him down. In two weeks, he meets the grandchildren. We are sure they will be lifelong pals for Paco. She is the obliging passenger on the imaginary bus, comes along for the ride on the kayak and will play fetch or chase whenever the boys ask her to. Both of these puppies have had training by our in-house trainer, Lucas. Bella loves neighborhood walks, hiking, Frisbee, a good game of fetch, and swimming. She is so personable with everyone of all ages. She visits with me in an extend-a-care facility and just seems to sense when she needs to be gentle. It is difficult to have a walk without being stopped on the street to be told how cute she is. Bella house-trained very quickly and easily learned obedience commands. She has a very high energy level but that affords her the ability to enjoy the active lifestyle that we lead. She is never far from her owner and enjoys car rides, vacationing or just hanging out. Bella gets professionally groomed about every five weeks to prevent matting and then only requires a quick daily brushing. It also makes it easier when she spends a great deal of time outside hiking, swimming and playing in the snow. She does not shed with the exception of some hair in the brush when she is groomed. Bella has experienced zero health issues. She has so many goofy facial expressions and mannerisms that just make you happy all the time. She loves to snuggle and follows me everywhere. We love our little fur ball. My hubby never thought he would want a smaller pup but Brittany has stolen his heart, too. She gets along great with children.
