Both dogs are of a similar size and have a wolf-like appearance, which is part of what made them prime candidates for crossbreeding. What Are Crossbred Dogs? It is worth noting that crossbred dogs, sometimes called designer dogs, are dogs that have been intentionally bred by mixing two or more recognized breeds. It is not a term for dogs bred accidentally or without purebred ancestors. However, crossbred dogs are not recognized as separate breeds in their own right, so their behavior and characteristics are not as predictable as purebred dogs. One of the advantages of purebred dogs is that it is relatively easy to predict their size, appearance, and temperament. Gerberian Shepsky Appearance As both German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies are medium-sized dogs with a wolf-like appearance, you can expect similar traits from their offspring. German Shepherds tend to be considered medium-to-large-sized dogs. Males typically measure 24 to 26 inches in height at the withers, and the females are usually a bit smaller at 22 to 24 inches. However, both sexes tend to look bigger than other dogs of a similar height, as they have very long necks. The females are at the smaller end of the spectrum, and the males are at the larger end. Alternatively, they might choose to entertain themselves by digging or chewing. Both breeds were created to spend a lot of time with humans, with Huskies often staying indoors with their families for warmth. This means they tend to bond quickly with their people and are very good with smaller family members though very small children should never be left unsupervised with any dog. While German Shepherds tend to have guard dog-like protective instincts, Huskies are pack animals and enjoy the company of other dogs. So, it is difficult to predict whether your Shepsky crossbreed will display more alpha-like behavior or be more submissive and play well with other pets. Shepskies can develop joint conditions, particularly in their elbows and hips, which can lead to pain and discomfort moving as they age. Adequate exercise and an orthopedic bed that allows them to take the pressure off their joints are both useful tools in preventing these issues. Losing at least some of their eyesight in later life is a common concern. It was the crossbreed hybrid combination of the Labrador Retriever and the Standard Poodle. It was spurred on by the fact that even though the Labrador was an immensely popular breed, it had one negative traitintense shedding. It was also prone to several inherent problems in the breed, the most prevalent being hip dysplasia. From the beginning the world was in love. Not only did the crossbreed hybrid not shed, those with allergies did not react, and with the now in place crossbreed hybrid vigor, the dog was far healthier and robust. This crossbreed hybrid had a mercurial rise to the top spanning the world over. Somewhere around the crossbreed hybrid of the Goldendoodle came to be. In a celebrities Goldendoodle made the cover of Life Magazine, making it the new poster child of the doodles. The ensuing article espoused the virtues of the Goldendoodle and even went so far as to suggest it as perhaps the ultimate breed ever! Goldendoodles have now eclipsed the original Labradoodle in popularity. Many customers ask why, and what the differences are. To this, my answer is, not much. There is a prevailing assumption that the Labradoodle will have a "longer" muzzle then the Goldendoodle. This, I believe , is because many people think of the narrow face of the American Field Lab and associate that with the offspring. This is a common misconception and the reason is easy to explain. But in order to do so, we have to take a closer look at the Standard Poodle. The Standard Poodle doesn't get a very fair shake for the most part. Perhaps this is due to many people automatically associating the poodle with the mini version or the toy. Though many poodles in these sizes are wonderful dogs, everyone knows someone who had a bad experience with these versions or had a direct relationship with one that didn't go well. That said, the Standard Poodle is a fantastic dog thru and thru. But unless you've experienced one firsthand you may not realize that these dogs are unbelievably affectionate, loyal and loving. My next sentence I will say with a bit of trepidation for fear of offending some, but it is necessary to illustrate a point. Those that do not have firsthand experience with these dogs will be very unaware of what I am to speak of next. The haircut that most associate poodles within my opinion--makes them look horrible. But that doesn't have to be the case! In fact, with the proper haircut, to the casual observer they are easily mistaken for doodles. What most are use to seeing is the "show cut" for poodles which necessitates the shaving of the muzzle, around the eyes and brow and a bit of a pompadour on the head. I believe this makes them look quite terrible! The difference between a poodle with a full face and a shaved face is monumental. We've gone into this long winded explanation because I often get the statement "we want a doodle that looks more like the retriever then the poodle", or, "we like Goldendoodles over Labradoodles because they look more like the retriever side rather then the poodle". This is all hogwash. Either type of doodle can look "off" and not anything like "itself" when it doesn't have its proper "teddy-bear cut". Both versions will look like they have a much longer, skinnier snout if its shaved. Conversely, when grown in they both look full, round, and thicker--an actual illusion that is quite effective in both doodles and poodle. About Bliss Kennels Every farm must have a dog and we have never been an exception. From onwards we have always had at least one if not two or three. Since our family has such a love for dogs, we collectively decided to start breeding them. Also, family of ours in Southern Illinois have been successfully breeding crossbreeds hybrids for the last ten years and this provided further motivation and impetus. With the popularity of the Labrador retriever and the overwhelming rise in the demand for the crossbreed hybrid mix of the Lab and the Standard Poodle we decided to start there with the "Labradoodle". Taking it a step further is the "Goldendoodle", which is a crossbreed hybrid between a Standard Poodle and a Golden Retriever. Since the family already had a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel as a house dog and thought so highly of it, coupled with the rapid increase in this dogs popularity over the last 8 years we elected to breed them as well. Bulldogs originated in England and were originally used to bait bulls. Bulldogs were bred to be aggressive and were often used in dogfights. When Britain passed the Cruelty to Animals Act in , Bulldogs could no longer be used for bull baiting or dog fighting. The original Bulldog, the Old English Bulldog, became extinct, but not before lovers of the breed in England and America bred remaining the Bulldogs with other breeds to create new types of Bulldogs. The original version actually became extinct but not before English Bulldog breeders bred the Old English Bulldog with the Pug and other smaller breeds. These breeders created a lap-sized dog that could be kept as a family pet. The charming English Bulldog remains popular today. The English did not take to a smaller, toy-sized English Bulldog, but the smaller version became so popular in France that French Bulldog breeders renamed it the French Bulldog and bred in different traits than those seen in the English Bulldog. The French Bulldog has a smaller head and erect, bat ears unique to the breed. These dogs can be very willful and aggressive to other dogs, so training and discipline are necessary from the time they are small puppies. Because of the short muzzle and short, squat body, English and French Bulldogs can have breathing issues and are also unable to regulate body temperature.
