I have owned and trained Labradors since .My wife and I have been breeding Labradors since for the sole purpose of improving the Labrador breed as a whole. When I first thought about breeding Labs, one of my early mentors, the late George Kane, told me his definition. Now, more than two decades later, we bring to light that definition with every decision we make. Dogs that we personally own have competed in more than 1, stakes in just the last ten years. Why go to all that time, trouble and expense? Because that Sire or Dam is only as good as their last series or stake they ran in. So, week in and week out, you can find our Sires and Dams competing in various venues all over America and Canada. You always have and always will, set the standard for other breeders to follow. You certainly have the records and so many accomplishments to prove it. I never thought about it that way. Nothing comes easy, and we always take the road less traveled. The good Lord has blessed us with so much. Scooter earned his first advanced title at 10 months of age and his MH title at 21 months and 5 days old. Have you ever gone to a hunt test or field trial, and learned that you had the youngest dog competing in that event? It sure makes you feel very proud and blessed. Simply amazing! Again, we are so blessed. Scooter went on to qualify for four National Field Trial Championships. I am not sure how many Fox Reds can say they qualified for more. We have a support team of multiple awesome professional trainers and great friends who share our unquenchable passion for helping Black Ice Retrievers produce the most intelligent decorated pointing Labradors in the country. We take the responsibility, investment, and extensive research, which all go along with our goal, extremely serious. Sometimes, we have waited close to three years across multiple repeat breedings just to get the exact one pick of the litter we desire. I grew up hunting ducks off of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers in St. This is where if your lab could not handle multiple marks and blinds, you and your dog were not invited back. We have some of the highest standards in the industry. While other lab kennels breed great grandchildren, grandchildren, and daughters of well accomplished dogs, we only have litters from dogs that are well accomplished themselves. Why do breeders promote puppies from unproven parents? Second, the testing of the dog takes time, effort, and investment. You need to decide for yourself what type of buyer you are and then do your research. This industry is very competitive, and you can buy a lab from just about anywhere, but you get what you pay for. Our best customers are families who simply want the best possible dog for the dollar and take the time and effort to make the best informed buying decision possible. Thank you for visiting our website. We hope you enjoy browsing through all the details of our proven brand. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to reach out to us. However, puppy goldens are more fluff than flow. It doesn't take long for a golden puppy to begin growing feathers in his puppy fluff, which are the start of the long, full coat he'll have as an adult. From Fluff to Fur Most golden puppies begin growing the start of feathers in their short, fluffy puppy coat at around 3 months of age, but this can depend on the puppy's heritage and bloodlines. If his parents grew adult coats later, chances are so will he. Your best source for information about your puppy's heritage is his breeder. Ask to see your puppy's parents at the breeder's, and find out how old they were when they got their adult coats. The Coat Transition Around 3 months of age, you will notice some long hair growing in your puppy's tail. This is the beginning of his feathering. Goldens have feathers on their legs, under their stomachs, and on the tail. The adult coat begins growing on the dog's tail first and continues gradually up his body. The new hair will be slightly darker than his light puppy fur. Unlike other breeds, a golden doesn't shed his puppy fur. It is pushed aside by the longer adult hair growing in and eventually becomes the dog's undercoat. The undercoat will thicken as the longer outer coat grows in. This transition can take until your puppy is 18 months old to be complete. Grooming Helps Start grooming your golden retriever as a puppy. Goldens are heavy shedders and the more you groom, the less hair you'll find around your house. Begin by running a soft brush over the puppy's body to get him used to it. Brush in the direction the hair grows. Add a pin brush and slicker to your tools as your dog grows, and brush him daily or at least weekly. Removing loose hair from your golden will make way for new hair to grow in and minimize the flying fur on your clothing. They have a dense, light-colored undercoat and a slightly coarser, darker outer coat. The thickness of your dog's coat is dependent on his environment. Nature dictates that a dog who spends more time outside will have a thicker coat than one who spends all his time indoors. As the temperature changes, his body regulates the amount of coat he needs. Seasonal shedding of indoor dogs is dictated by daylight, since they do not experience the temperature changes that a dog who spends more time outdoors does. The amount of daylight stimulates hormones that control hair growth. Indoor and outdoor dogs shed more in the spring and fall. More Articles. Golden puppies are not born with full hair, though. Instead, they have short, fluffy coats, which later grow into a long, shiny hair. So, at what age does a Golden Retriever get long hair? A Golden Retriever starts growing long hair on its tail at three months of age. The feathers on its legs, chest, and stomach start showing at about one year. Some dogs might sport longer or heavier coats than others. This article will explore what determines the age at which your Golden Retriever gets long hair. Finally, you will learn how to take care of your Golden Retriever to ensure his coat remains healthy and shiny. This article may contain affiliate links and loyalgoldens may earn a commission if a purchase is made. Unlock your goldens natural intelligence and see just how quickly problem behaviors disappear. This is the best at home dog training I've ever used! The outer coat of long hair extends to the tail and underbody but is longest in the areas where it feathers out away from the body. These areas include the tail, chest, legs, and stomach. This comes down to the specific genes they received from their parents. Note: In traditional Scotland, Golden Retrievers accompanied hunters on their hunting trips, and their work was to retrieve prey. The dogs sported long hair and thick undercoats, which protected them from the biting cold and heat. It will take about 3 months before you begin to see the first signs of longer hair, usually on their tail. From this stage on, a Golden puppy starts sprouting feathers aka longer hair. This growth marks a departure from puppy fluff and the beginning of the long, full coat characteristic of a mature Golden Retriever. This will help you estimate more accurately when your puppy might get his longer hair. Golden Retriever Hair Growth Stages As mentioned earlier, a Golden Retriever puppy starts growing adult hair at approximately three months old. However, this growth is subtle and may not be noticeable until he is closer to one year old. Your Golden Retriever can be considered to have a fully grown coat when he is two years of age. Long adult hair starts growing first at the tail. This feathering process then proceeds to the legs and stomach. With time, the entire body gets the adult coat, which tends to be darker than the former puppy fur. Feathered fur is usually light and soft and is useful for temperature regulation; it thickens during the cold season and thins during warmer months. Interestingly, Golden puppies do not shed their puppy fur. Instead, once new hair starts growing, the puppy fur gets nudged aside by the newer and longer outer coat. Golden Retriever puppies are actually born with their undercoat. They grow their long hair out over the top as they get older. Eventually, the undercoat grows thicker as the longer outer coat begins to cover it. This transition takes almost 18 months, though, for most Retrievers, the full coat grows once the dog is more than a year old. If he spends considerable time outdoors, he is bound to get a much thicker coat than if he were to stay indoors. The mature coat helps keep your dog both warm and dry, depending on the weather. The dog also sheds more during the summer months in order to keep cool. The thing is, for double-coated dogs, the undercoat grows much faster than the outer coat. As such, when you shave your Golden, the hair that grows back tends to look dull and uneven. Furthermore, your dog needs his full coat to protect him from the sun. Besides, Golden Retrievers are heavy shedders, and frequent grooming reduces the amount of shed hair found around the house. Early grooming is also beneficial in other ways: It allows your puppy to get used to grooming, thus making the activity easier and even enjoyable to him as he becomes an adult. For Golden Retrievers with long hair, grooming helps keep the hair in check and reduces excessive shedding Brushing encourages blood circulation in the skin, which stimulates the hair follicles and promotes hair production. Start by using a soft brush and always ensure that you brush parallel to the hair growth. Do this daily or once a week. You may add a pin brush and a rake Amazon to your grooming tools as your puppy matures. The rake is excellent for removing debris and detangling messy undercoat hair. Discover how to train your Golden Retriever by playing games : 21 games to play with your Golden that will make them smarter and better behaved! This will help make way for new growth and reduce the amount of fur that settles on your clothing. When washing your Golden retriever, try to use shampoos with the least amount of chemicals like this one at Amazon. This helps retain the hair better by reducing shedding. If your dog has skin issues, consult your vet. The vet will determine the cause of the problem and advise on diet change or the appropriate mode of treatment. These beneficial Omega acids can be in fish oil, coconut oil, and olive oil, or through additional vitamin supplements Amazon found to be good for Golden Retrievers. Also, beef bones containing bone marrow are excellent for healthy skin. Remember to clear this with your vet if your dog has allergies that would prevent him from consuming any of the recommended foods and supplements. Watch Out for Unusual Shedding Golden Retrievers shed their hair year-round but the shedding becomes especially heavy twice a year in the spring and fall seasons. However, if the shedding seems unusual or: The shedding is excessive and out of season Your dog is losing large patches of hair You may need to visit your vet since this could be a medical issue. Your dog might be suffering from a fungal or bacterial infection, a food allergy, or external parasites such as fleas or mites. If the hair loss is accompanied by a strong odor, see my article Smelly Golden Retrievers What Stinks? Here are some useful suggestions on how to accomplish this: Keep your dog clean. Long hair coats can trap twigs and leaves, which could cause the hair to tangle and mat. Always remove such items before your dog takes a bath — every weeks for adults but more often for puppies as they get dirtier. Brush the coat often. Have a regular brushing routine. Brush your Golden Retriever more often during shedding season — like daily. Provide high-quality nutrition. This should contain the right nutritional balance and include minerals, vitamins, fiber, proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Final Thoughts Every Golden Retriever follows a unique timeline when it comes to growing long hair. Even their hair color appears in different shades of gold. Keep looking out for the initial feathery patches, and once these kick in, you will be sure that long hair is on the way. With time, your reward will be a coat full of lustrous, shiny golden hair. Share 0 Shares Learning about the three stages of your Golden Retrievers coat will help you understand each stage of growth. It starts at birth as a thin short coat, morphs into a fluffy stage between months of life, and finally your dog will display their gorgeous long feathery coat as an adult. The 3 Distinctive Stages of Coat Development for a Golden Retriever The Golden Retriever was bred to have a thick double coat that meant that they could retrieve shot birds in any weather, such as during the cooler duck season. This thick coat kept them warm in cold weather, and the water flowed off their coat keeping them warm and dry. They have a lovely personality and tend to get along with everyone, young and old alike. But it is their beautiful long golden coat that they are known and admired for. But it dries to a warm soft and fuzzy stage that will keep the puppy warm and regulate their body temperature. At months of age, your GR will transition from their soft fuzzy coat which becomes the undercoat. They will start to grow their outer coat through the undercoat at this stage. Everyone loves a cute Golden Retriever puppy; they are so adorable with their fuzzy fur that makes them look more like a cuddly bear than a dog. Combined with their drop-dead good looks and their cute demeanor and cuddly disposition, you have one little puppy that will wind you around their paw and steal your heart. In the two to three months after their birth, they will be a little fuzzy ball, and here is why. The Golden Retriever puppy is born with a short thin coat of fur which is suited to them while they adjust to life and learn how get about. Their short coat is easier for the mother dog to clean, and it enables the puppy to move about unencumbered while learning how to walk, play and feed. Although their coat will start getting thicker in the first few months, they will remain short. In these first few months of life, it is a good time to train your little Golden to enjoy being groomed as this will become part of their weekly life. Brushing them while they are young gets them into the habit of being groomed because the Golden Retriever does shed a lot of fur and brushing your dog helps to control their shedding. This stage of coat growth and development happens around months of age. It often shows first in the tail area but be aware that this can vary from dog to dog. Their coat is a double coat. The undercoat is thick and protects them from heat and cold. The dense outer coat grows from amongst the underlying puppy fluff which settles to become the undercoat. At months they will start getting their adult coat. Each Golden Retriever is different, there is no set time that each stage must happen within. Asking your breeders for information about when the parent dogs of your puppy went through their coat growth stages will give you an idea of when that will happen for your pup. This full growth stage is from about 8 months onwards, again, depending on the dog. These long, beautiful hairs start on the tail, followed by the stomach, chest, and legs within their first year. From here on, the coat of the Golden Retriever will be shed several times during the year, depending on where you live and what the climate is like. The highest level of shedding occurs in the late spring, and the late fall. Other than that, they shed modestly throughout the year. When do Golden Retrievers Tails get Fluffy? Dogs are individuals, and the time that they achieve any key steps in their growth cycle can vary depending on the dog. The tail starts to fluff out at around weeks old and is made up of two layers. First there is the outer layer of long guard hairs, then the undercoat is comprised of softer, downy hairs. Each dog is different as to when their tails achieve the beautiful Golden Retriever fluffy look. The guard hairs start first on the tail which becomes fluffy and long by the time they are six to eight months old. The Golden Retriever is a very popular breed that is a great family dog. They have a lovely nature, plenty of energy, and just love their people. Their fur can get everywhere — on your furniture, on your clothes, floating in the house, and rolling around like a tumbleweed in the garden! When you get a Golden Retriever, you must accept the shedding that comes with the dog. So why do they shed so much? It is because of their coat; they are a double coated canine, which means that they have a waterproof topcoat, but they also have a soft downy undercoat. Their coat is designed by nature to help regulate their temperature. It is normally during the changes of the seasons — particularly spring and fall, that they shed the most. During summer their coat is thinner than usual, but they start growing thicker fur for the winter. But in saying that, be aware that they shed pretty much all the year around. Regular grooming with a rake comb and pin brush during grooming helps control the thick under hair. Regular brushing removes the excess loose hair from within the coat and can cut down on the amount of hair in the home. The climate where you live is a factor in the coat stages of your Golden Retriever. If you live in a hot place, they will shed their coat more to remain cool. If you live in a cold climate your golden will shed less to protect them from the icy climate. A dog who spends a lot of their time outside will develop a thicker coat than a dog that spends a lot of time indoors. As earlier stated, the Golden Retriever seems to shed all year around. But what if it is excessive, like handfuls of hair falling out — is that normal? There are certain things that can affect the amount of fur that your Golden Retriever sheds. It may just be a growth phase that they are going through, but it could be an outside influence that is causing a change in their shedding pattern. Allergy reactions due to pollen, food, or even their grooming shampoo can be a factor. You may notice them scratching more than usual. A dog with allergies also suffers from eye or ear infections so check them regularly to ensure all is well. Parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites can almost drive a dog mad, and you will notice your dog itching themselves and probably whining at the same time. That thick coat is an inviting place to call home for parasites, so check their coat carefully, especially after long walks in wooded areas. Stress can affect your Golden Retriever. They need to be with their owners. If your Golden Retriever is feeling left out, they may begin scratching themselves or fretting which can cause hair loss. Make sure that they are also booked in for a regular health check with your local vet. The vet put your mind at rest as to what is normal shedding and what is not. A long rake comb can really sort out the dense undercoat and pull out any loose, irritating hair while a pin brush keeps the top hairs clean and tangle-free. With a consistent routine of grooming and washing your dog, you will remove the loose hair and be able to dispose of it. Sometimes when your dog is molting shedding their hair you can grab handfuls of their hair and pull gently. Brushing daily if possible is great, otherwise, try to groom them at least three times per week. Bathing, which is important to care for the coat, needs to be done once a week, or twice a month using a suitable mild dog shampoo. This phenomenon is a natural occurrence as your Golden Retriever ages. During the puppy stage , they are more of a light golden color, but as they mature, some of the longer guard hairs darken over time. Their coat is characterized by a thick, light-colored undercoat and moderately rough darker outer coat. The climate can make a difference. A hot sunny climate where they spend a lot of time in the water can make for a lighter-colored coat. The Golden Retriever should not be shaved as it is the worst thing that you can do to your canine. If you do a complete shave, it may damage the coat and it will never grow back like before. It can also result in skin allergies and damage. The undercoat is designed to protect the dog from both hot and cold temperatures. The springtime shedding of the undercoat helps them cope with the heat. Conclusion Golden Retrievers are known for their lovely, fluffy coats and long flowing tail. Their soft golden or darker caramel colors are beautiful and new owners are attracted to their looks, good nature, and goofy, adorable antics. But like most things, there is a price to pay for their good looks, and that is that they shed a lot. But with regular grooming and brushing, a bath or two a month, and the use of low allergenic mild shampoo, you will be able to control as much of the shedding as possible. And if you ask any Golden Retriever owner, they will tell you that the shedding is a small price to pay for such an affable, glorious dog. Golden Retriever Resources and Tips. Fish oil will help take care of the appearance of dog hair Among dogs, we can distinguish between hairless breeds entirely or partially deprived of hair coat as a result of mutation and directed breeding and short- and long-haired breeds with a single coat only topcoat or double coat topcoat and undercoat. A dog's coat has a characteristic structure and arrangement, i. Long-haired breeds can be from to tufts, and in shorthaired breeds, this number is almost twice as small and can be from to tufts. As the dog ages, the coat also gains its final characteristics, which ultimately affect its thermal insulation properties. In puppies, only one hair grows perpendicular to each clump's skin, giving the coat its puppy-like fluffiness. Puppy hair is replaced during the growth of the animal to the adult. Over time, the hair bends appropriately, and depending on the breed, it grows with the undercoat creating a two-layered coat outer: longer basic hair protecting against moisture and damage and inner: shorter, softer, denser undercoat creating an insulating and thermal layer or not, which in effect gives a single-layered coat consisting practically only of the outer layer, i. Furthermore, the hair grows until it reaches the target length genetically programmed for the breed and takes on the breed's structure and texture characteristics and the specific hair type. What affects the golden retriever's coat Age: You will notice changes in your pet when he is three months old. The noticeable hair growth will be on the tail, then other parts will catch up. Genes: If your puppy's parents took longer to grow hair, there is a good chance that the same will happen with your puppy. Nutrition : A proper diet will facilitate your dog's hair growth, while poor nutrition will slow down hair growth. Also, Omega 3 and 6 supplements will help in hair growth. Health: His coat will be long and shiny when your puppy does not have underlying medical conditions such as hormonal imbalances. Grooming: Routine brushing and grooming help distribute natural oils to the skin and hair while removing loose, old, and damaged hair. When bathing your dog, use the recommended shampoo to help kill bacteria, remove dirt and preserve the natural oils in your dog's coat. By the time your dog is 18 months old, you will notice adult fur on him. Mature golden retrievers have a coarser and darker coat than puppies. With grooming tools, it is easy to see the changes in your dog's coat. When he is a puppy, just run a soft brush over the coat because it is short and smooth. Over time, you will need to add a rake or spike brush to your grooming routine. How long does a Golden Retriever take to get a full coat? Molting begins when your puppy is about three months old. As your hunting dog ages, the fur grows with it. Regardless of gender, male and female retrievers will have an adult coat by 18 months. The stages of a Golden Retriever's coat are Birth: the coat is thin and wet. However, once dry, the puppies' coat becomes softer and thicker to keep them warm. When the golden retriever puppy is about three months old, you may notice feathering after three months. The plumage starts on the tail, spreads to the belly of the legs, and eventually covers the entire body. At 18 months of age, an adult coat grows on your pet. You will notice that his coat becomes fuller and slightly darker. Golden Retrievers do not shed their puppy coat. Instead, the adult hair grows and surrounds the light, creating a uniform coat. Once your pet is an adult, it has the Golden Retriever look you've been patiently waiting for. It takes about 18 months for your pet to develop a full coat. Your canine friend will maintain a full coat until adulthood. Grooming Golden retriever moults twice a year intensively - in spring and autumn. There is a lot of hair then, but removing it from carpets and furniture is quite easy. However, small amounts of hair can always fall out, especially if the dog spends a lot of time in heated rooms. A representative of this breed should be brushed once a week only during coat change, it should be done more often with a poodle brush with longer wires and then with a metal comb. The bath should be conducted, if necessary, in shampoos for long-haired dogs or hypoallergenic for sensitive skin. It's worth applying conditioner or balm on the coat for a few minutes. Rinse it off and thoroughly squeeze the hair with a towel. It is best to dry the golden retriever's coat, which is soft and quite voluminous, with a hair dryer - it will take a long time to dry itself and may crease. The hair between the pads should be clipped regularly, claws should be shortened if they don't wear off by themselves , and ears and teeth should be checked. How to take care of a golden retriever coat? Golden retrievers are amiable dogs perfectly suited as companions at home. These animals are ideal companions for children, and although in their veins flows the blood of hunting dogs, they have no problems acclimatizing to the home thatch. Taking care of a golden retriever will not be a big challenge. All you need is a bit of goodwill to properly take care of this dog's upbringing, health, and appearance. What kind of coat do golden retrievers have? Golden retrievers belong to the group of fetching dogs, skidders, and water dogs. These animals were bred to accompany hunting birds. Because of that, their long beautiful coat is lined with a thick and waterproof undercoat. The outer fur, longer on the belly, chest, thighs, hind legs, and tail can tangle and knot if left untreated. If left to itself, the undercoat tends to feel. In addition, hair that falls out profusely, especially during molting, and staying on the animal, can impede skin breathing. This, in turn, often leads to various skin lesions and irritation. How often should we comb golden retrievers? Being an owner of a golden retriever, we cannot forget about grooming treatments. It is true that in this area, we will cause problems if we do not reach for the comb for a long time. At the same time, this does not mean that the care of the pet's appearance must take a lot of time. However, it's enough to brush the pet's coat regularly, and the animal will certainly take pride in its beautiful and neat fur. The top layer of the dog's coat requires a bit more effort. It should be brushed for minutes at least 3 times a week. The bottom layer can be combed a little less often, for example, once a week. A little more work in maintaining the coat will have to be done during the molting period. It is worth remembering, however, that more frequent brushing of golden retrievers will minimize the amount of hair scattered around the house and make cleaning easier. What to comb golden retriever? As already mentioned, dogs of this breed have two types of hair - the denser located closer to the skin undercoat and the longer outer coat. Therefore, if we want to take care of a golden retriever's coat properly, we must equip ourselves with two types of tools. The easiest way to deal with an unruly undercoat is to use a poodle brush and a hook trimmer. The latter is especially useful if the undercoat felts quickly. The hook trimmer is great for combing out and preparing the dog's fur for further trimming with a traditional trimmer or fingers equipped with special thimbles or latex pads. Use a stainless steel comb and a soft wire or natural bristle brush to clean up the coat. With the comb, tangles and knots can be easily combed out. Incredibly convenient is a double comb, i. With the help of a brush, we can get rid of dust and dead skin. This equipment is also good for giving the final polish and evenly distributing the dog's coat of natural oils. Bathing a golden retriever Golden retrievers love water. This does not mean, however, that the dog who likes to splash in the lake every week we should throw into the bath. Bathing a golden retriever well removes all the dirt accumulated in the dog's coat, but let's not treat the animal more often than once every two to three months. Before proceeding with this procedure, it is necessary to properly brush the dog's fur. In addition, let's remember that for bathing, we should use a special shampoo for the dog, not preparations from our own shelf. Fish oil will help take care of the appearance of dog hair If you want your pet to look great, don't forget that grooming must go hand in hand with a well-balanced diet. The basis is, of course, high-quality food. However, this should be supplemented with special dog vitamins such as cod or salmon oil. They also significantly impact the condition of your dog's hair. We recommend Bemix Pets Upgraded Salmon oil. More Health. Grooming He is excellent as a family companion, however, for him to rest peacefully on the couch and act as the house's mascot - he needs activities. Goldens are excellent retrievers, so the dummy is a sport created for retrievers. He is a working dog, created to work in water, for example, to fetch arrows. Fortunately, you can meet his needs much more quickly, through active learning of tricks, obedience training, and tracking. Golden retriever coat stages Stage 1 At 3 months old, most Golden puppies begin to shed feathers in their short, fluffy puppy coat. If the puppy's parents later grew an adult coat, it is more likely to do so. You can ask the breeder to meet the puppy's parents and find out at what age they had the adult coat. Stage 2 When the puppy is about 3 months old, he will begin to see long hairs growing on his tail. This stage indicates the beginning of blending. Golden Retrievers have feathers on their tail, belly and legs. The dog's tail is the starting point for the growth of the adult coat. The rest of the adult hair will grow all over his body. The recent hair growth will be slightly darker than the formerly light puppy coat. The Golden Retriever puppy differs from other breeds in that it does not shed its puppy fur. Instead, the puppy fur is repelled by a newer, more long, outer coat that grows. The complete transition takes 18 months. Golden retriever appearance You need to know something before you have a golden retriever living under your roof - the breed description. This dog has a harmonious appearance that is perfectly finished with a longer coat. The head is nicely sculptured, without jowls, with a well-defined foot and a relatively long muzzle. The balanced body ends in a tail carried flush with the topline. The limbs are strong, and muscular, giving the Golden Retriever an energetic, powerful gait without raising the front paws too high. The golden dog has longer, smooth or wavy hair finished with feathers. Importantly, underneath the coat, a dense undercoat protects the skin from water. The acceptable coat colour is golden or cream. There may be a small white mark on the forecast. However, the coat must not be too dark - red or mahogany. When it comes to Golden Retriever dogs, the breed description also applies to size. Males are slightly larger than bitches, a common trait in quadrupeds. At the withers, their size is cm, and bitches - cm. The weight of males fluctuates around 28 kg and females - 27 kg. Goldens are classified as medium-sized breeds. Their standard weight can range from kg, with males reaching 56 to 61 cm at the withers and females from 51 to 56 cm. They have a proportional and quite muscular body structure. This is a sizable but gentle breed known for its warm nature. Golden retrievers are extremely friendly and sociable, they give equal sympathy to basically everyone - even burglars. Therefore, they certainly can not be considered guard dogs. They are patient and very understanding - great dogs for families with children. They are usually easy to raise. They get attached, love company, and usually get along well with other animals. Quite often they are used in dog therapy, sometimes they work as tracking or rescue dogs. They can detect drugs or gas leaks. They can also be trained to help people with disabilities. A golden retriever is definitely not a couch dog. You need to take him out for long walks to "run around". He loves all physical activities, including swimming. He is remarkably resilient. Originally, it was a hunting dog, so it happens that it brings various "prey" in its mouth. Golden retrievers have gorgeous fur, which is a dog decoration. Of course, the pet looks great if its coat is neat, shiny and clean. Dirt, tangles, bits of twigs, or food entangled in the hair take away a lot of the charm and are unpleasant for the pet itself. They can pinch, tangle and snag on everything. In case of exceptional lack of care, fur can start to moss and felt, which looks really awful and there is no way to do anything with such a mess of hair - only cut it off. So let's take care of our pet's fur so that it remains a natural decoration and we can be proud of it. What is the best way to take care of a golden retriever's coat? What is the coat of a golden retriever? Golden retrievers have a coat that is either smooth or somewhat wavy. The hair is quite long and reaches its largest size on parts of the body such as the chest, belly, thighs, tail, and front legs exactly their backside. These dogs have an undercoat and it is waterproof. Long hair is a beautiful look but has many problems because it tangles easily. It's also not very resistant to dirt, especially because golden retrievers in a classic coat don't have protective colours it means that after jumping in the mud it will be obvious. Dogs of this breed undergo intensive moulting in spring and autumn, which should be responded to with more frequent and intensive brushing. You should also consider giving your dog a dietary supplement to strengthen growing hair. Tools for golden retriever coat care Since the coat of this breed of dog is both delicate and quite long, we need several fur care tools for different stages of combing. All products should be bought in a good pet store e. Do not use human tools! They are not suitable; for example, the same comb as our dog is extremely unhygienic. So what do we need and what should we equip ourselves with? First, we need a poodle brush - it is perfect for smoothing the hair without tugging it too much. Secondly, a metal comb is irreplaceable when attacking tangles of all kinds. Thirdly, one of the following tools will come in handy, depending on what your pet's hair is like and what effect you want to achieve with trimming and shaping the different parts: a pair of degloving scissors, a trimmer, a razor or a trimmer rake. What are these tools used for? Primarily to shape the fur on the neck, ears, paws, bristles and tail. The combing itself should always be done on a dry coat. We make gentle, sweeping motions, starting with the head and ending with the tail. Do not tug or pull the fur. First, we deal with tangles with a comb, then we smooth the whole with a brush. Alternatively, we can apply conditioner to the coat during bathing and then use a metal brush to remove any tangles and tangled parts of the hair. After a thorough combing, if the dog is preparing for a show, we can spray over the coat anti-static liquid, so that it will not electrify. Cosmetics for golden retriever coat care What is the best shampoo for our Golden? A golden retriever should be bathed if it gets very dirty, of course, this should be done more often. Our dog needs special cosmetics, dedicated to shaggy dogs, not humans! Using our products will disturb the pH of his delicate skin, and may cause rashes, hair loss, itching and dandruff. Of course, for long-haired pets, a hypoallergenic one will also be very good, for exceptional sensitivities. Before taking part in a show it's worth using a special shampoo to increase the coat's volume and use a smoothing spray. Remember that the shampoo should be rinsed thoroughly and be careful not to get into the nose, eyes or ears of the pet ears of the dog should be cleaned and dried after each bath, because due to their hanging shape it is difficult to drain water from them, and in warmth and moisture fungi can develop. During washing, we can also apply conditioner or lotion for a few moments to make fur smooth and shiny. Then take a soft towel and squeeze out excess water do not rub or rub too hard. A hairdryer will also come in handy - set a slightly warm stream of air and gently, part by part, dry the coat. Don't exaggerate the amount of shampoo, as the hair will stick together and fall out, making it look greasy, which definitely won't add to the dog's charm. Let's also remember about regular trimming tufts of fur from between paw pads. To do this, let's use scissors with a rounded end. Grooming The golden retriever has a characteristic, long, dense coat of a golden colour, but does not moult excessively. The dog needs to be brushed 1 or 2 times a week, except during increased hair loss spring and autumn , when it may be necessary even daily. In addition, the dog's claws need to be trimmed regularly - otherwise, they can cause discomfort and pain. It is also necessary to cut the hair from between the pads. However, frequent baths are not advisable, except for recreational ones in open water. Golden retrievers should only be bathed when they are simply dirty. After each contact with water, his ears should be thoroughly cleaned to avoid the development of ringworm. More Dogs.

Lab puppies can start learning how to swim as soon as they are old enough or at around 12 weeks of age. Lab puppies need to learn how to swim, so they need to start swimming early on. While they do have water instincts, they need to develop before they can build the strength to swim well. This guide will explain what age they can start swimming at and how to train them properly. We have helped many Labrador owners train their dogs to improve their obedience and water capabilities. They are a simple and loving breed with lots of intelligence, so that they can do just about anything. Lab puppies typically need time to develop these skills before they can be safely allowed into the water without supervision. Most labs should wait until about months old before going into the water for the first. It takes time for lab puppies to learn basic skills and gain the strength for swimming. It requires them to grow a bit more to a bigger size too. In general, Labradors love to swim and are renowned for being excellent swimmers. You can introduce your puppy to the water with careful supervision after weeks. The more time you spend with your lab puppy, the faster it will learn how to swim. It is also an excellent way for your lab puppy to trust you more. This is especially true if you bring them into the water younger. For example, your lab puppy will pick up swimming faster at six months compared to only weeks. Follow these steps to train your puppy to swim effectively. Teach Your Lab Puppy Basic Obedience Training your lab puppy to swim is a great idea, but it is not the most important thing you can do with your new dog. You should first teach your dog how to behave correctly with obedience training. This will help them understand what they are supposed to do in certain situations and provide a foundation for learning how to swim later on. After your puppy learns to obey basic commands, training it how to swim will be faster and easier. This will help them to be more comfortable in the water and build a positive association with it. When introducing your dog to the water, you should start by taking them on a short walk near the water's edge. If they are hesitant, try placing their paws in the water for a few seconds before moving on. Once they are comfortable, you can slowly increase their time in the water and eventually take them swimming with you. Gradually increase the depth of the water until they are swimming on their own, and then slowly lower it back down. Training your lab puppy on how to swim can be done through patience and perseverance. You should start slowly, giving your pup treats when paddling for a few seconds before gradually increasing the time they spend in the pool of water. Remain Patient When you first bring a new puppy home, it may not be comfortable in the water. They will likely want to avoid water as much as possible and wag their tail when they see you coming towards the pool or lake. It can take weeks to get used to swimming and even longer for them to stay afloat in deep water. Be patient as they grow and get more comfortable in the water. They have the instinct to use the doggy paddle but need to get comfy. Are Labradors Natural Swimmers? Dogs are not born with the ability to swim. They can only learn how to swim through extensive training. Labradors are no exception. However, Labradors were originally bred as working dogs for hunting and pulling carts, so it is not surprising that they are good at swimming. They have many traits that back up this reputation as well. Once dogs get comfortable in the water, they will know to use their strength to do the doggy paddle to stay afloat. This is something they understand naturally through instincts. Labradors also have a double coat of fur , which is better for the water because it keeps them warmer. This, along with a wide otter tail and webbed paws, makes them great at swimming. Labradors have thicker fur so they will remain warmer than other dogs in cold water. However, this does not mean they can handle freezing temperatures for a long time. We recommend exposing your dog to the water in the summer when it is not too cold. This will allow them to enjoy swimming more too. Lab puppies are susceptible to hypothermia and should never be left in freezing cold water. They might not show any signs of distress, but they can die if they stay in the cold for too long. Practice the same safety tips for your puppy as you would for yourself or a child. Extremely cold waters should be avoided. Here are some tips on taking care of your lab puppy and keeping them safe in the water. Always Supervise Your Puppy Lab puppies should never be left alone in a pool or near any body of water for any time, as they can easily drown if they accidentally fall into the pool. This is especially true for younger puppies that are new to swimming. You can change this approach as your lab gets older and more experienced. But for now, never let them into the water without other people around as a safety precaution. This is especially true if they are in the ocean or a lake, where the water could be more dangerous. Use A Canine Life Jacket Puppies need to be taught how to swim early so they can grow up with the ability to save themselves in the water. A canine life jacket is a great way to keep your lab puppy safe while learning how to swim. It will help them get used to the water experience without causing any harm. The best part about using a canine life jacket is that it will motivate your lab puppy to learn how to swim faster and more efficiently. How to Train Your Labrador Retriever Puppy to Love Water September 5, Labrador retrievers are great hunting and retrieving dogs that make exceptional companions and family pets. If you and your family like to hunt, fish, or play outdoor sports, a Labrador retriever may be the perfect dog for you. When outdoors, you and your Lab can often be around water. It is best not to introduce a dog to water all at once. Because Labs sometimes are hesitant around water, the following steps will help introduce and train a new Lab puppy to be comfortable and enthusiastic around water. Teach Your Lab Basic Commands As soon as you get a Labrador retriever puppy, teach him or her basic commands such as come, sit, stay, down, and leave it. These commands will teach your puppy that you are the pack leader. Keep your Lab puppy with you as much as possible so you can train throughout the day and always have dog treats with you for rewards. At six months of age, you can enroll your Lab in dog obedience school to learn more commands, get exercise and mental stimulation, and become acquainted with other dogs. This training is essential to make sure your dog will be safe when you bring him or her to water for the first time. Introduce Your Puppy to Water While your Labrador retriever puppy is young, you can play in your yard with a garden hose and a small child's pool. Splash water on your puppy's face and feet to acquaint your dog with the sensation of being wet. You can fill a small child's pool with enough water that it is chest deep for your Lab puppy. Toss a small ball or toy into the pool so that your puppy can jump in and fetch it. Walk on a Beach If you live near a lake or ocean, take your Labrador retriever for a walk on the shore or beach. Walk in the shallow water with your Lab so that both of you can get your feet wet. Attach a leash to your Lab's collar to keep him or her close to you as you walk in the water. You can also toss a waterproof toy into the shallow water to entice your Lab to chase and fetch it. The best toy for this activity is soft and in the shape of a small bird or fish so your Lab can easily grab it and hold it in their mouth. Each time you throw your Lab's toy into the shallow water, throw it a little farther away to entice your Lab to get familiar with deeper water. Swim in the Water You can teach your Labrador retriever to swim by getting in a pool, lake, river, or ocean and swimming with them. Dogs will naturally paddle when they are in water deep enough to swim in, but need to learn how to maneuver in the water. To teach your Lab puppy to maneuver and be confident in the water, hold your hand under their chest or belly to keep them afloat as they dog paddle. Speak to your Lab with a gentle voice to reassure and encourage them in the water. Dive In the Water Once you have taught your Labrador retriever to swim, you can teach him or her to dive into the water from a pier or diving board. The best way to do this is to hold your Lab in your arms, dive into the water, and release your Lab to swim out of the water. Once your Lab is familiar with diving, you can dive into the water and then call them to follow you. Socialize with Other Dogs One advantage of enrolling your Labrador retriever in dog obedience school is that they can meet and socialize with other dogs. Your Lab can then learn from watching and following their dog friends in many activities, including swimming. When your Labrador retriever plays outdoors in the water, it is best to use a waterproof polyurethane and nylon webbing collar as it is durable and dries almost instantly. But some Labs might also enjoy diving into the water, and they may love to retrieve things from water. This can be very stressful for them, and can even lead to them avoiding water in the future. The best way to encourage your Lab to swim is to introduce the habit gradually and safely. And the truth is, they were! Originally, Labrador ancestors were bred to work alongside fishermen on the island of Newfoundland, Canada. From these dogs, and other ancestors after British breeders first tried to standardise the Labrador breed, Labs inherited some traits that make them great swimmers. They also have a wide otter tail to help them swim, and webbed paws! Do Labradors Like to Swim? But, the prominence of these traits varies depending on the type of Labrador you have. When Can Labradors Start Swimming? Firstly, you must wait until your Labrador puppy has all of its necessary vaccinations. This will keep them safe from health problems like parvovirus. This might take longer than you would first think, involving chasing a stick over a small puddle at first. Gradually increase the amount of water your Lab is happy to wade through until it is slightly deeper or slightly wider. When your Labrador is happy, you can increase it again. Never make your Lab jump straight in at the deep end — literally! It may take a few months before your Labrador is happily swimming in deeper water. Can Labradors Swim in Cold Water? Waiting for those warmer summer months may be a better idea. Helping your Labrador Swim Safely As well as risks from cold water, there are a few other considerations to make before letting your Labrador swim. If your Lab is swimming in deep water, remember there could be strong undercurrents that could make them lose control. Plus, because lots of Labradors love to swim, they may not stop until they are completely exhausted. Not only does this leave them vulnerable in deep water, but it can cause problems like limber tail , which is very painful for them. This problem usually goes away after a few days, but is still stressful for your pup. Watch out for jellyfish, and worse! Do you have a Labrador at home that loves swimming? Can Labradors swim naturally? Do Labs like to swim? We have covered all these questions for you in the below article. Have a look. At what age can Lab puppies swim? Some people say 8 weeks, some say 12 weeks and some say 3 months. There are a lot of conflicting opinions regarding the age when your Labrador puppies can start swimming. Anyone would think like this, as these Labradors are historically linked with the fisherman and icy waters of Newfoundland. Many people even think that Lab puppies can swim at any young age and they keep asking me whether their puppies can swim when they are one month old. There are various factors to consider before determining your Labrador puppy swimming age. Where is your puppy going to swim? Is it near a public pool, or a lake or a pond or a beach? For example, it is probably safe to allow a 3-month-old puppy into a small pond, but it is not safe to allow him in the beach waters. Look at the points below and you will understand the age and time to introduce your Lab puppy to swimming waters. Habituate swimming to your Labrador puppy slowly. Initially, it is always better to make the puppy acquainted with water either in your bathtub or your personal pool. You can start this when your puppy reaches 3 months old. You have to remember that your Lab needs certain physical strength in its legs in order to swim effortlessly. Allow your little Lab to grow until 3 months and then you can introduce him to swimming. Some people tell me that their Labrador puppies started swimming when they are just 8 weeks old. Do not take him into public pools until he is fully vaccinated as there is a risk of deadly diseases for your little puppy. Take him into public water bodies only after he finishes his set of vaccinations. Some puppies take time during the exploration of water, hence remember not to force him in any way to get into the water. Forcing your Lab puppy to get into water does not work and your puppy may develop fear and aversion towards the water. One of my dog Simba was very scared of water and he never preferred to play with water during its lifetime. You can take your puppy to larger water bodies like beach waters when it reaches 6 months of age. My little puppy went into the beach waters when he is around 6 months of age and he enjoyed its day fully. Taking him at a younger age might scare him of the waves and it is even difficult for the little puppy to balance himself in the beach water. Labrador swimming- Complete guide Labradors are perfect swimmers which used to retrieve fish and nets from the cold icy waters of the North Atlantic. Have you seen its thick, dense water-resistant coat? It makes them waterproof. Observe their webbed feet, which help them to swim. Let us consider some basic questions to understand Labrador swimming. Labradors have the innate ability to swim, but that does not mean they can swim like fish. This is especially true with respect to puppies. Their body structure and genetics assist them in paddling in the water. Labradors love swimming and are good swimmers but it does not mean they can swim for any duration of time and anywhere. Hence it is important to remember that they are dogs and they have their limitations. So, do Labs like to swim? But not every Labrador likes to swim. As i told you my dog Simba hates water and he is really scared of it. The reason why some Labs are scared of water is that they are introduced to water in an inappropriate way. Their first experience of water might have been scary and disturbing for them. How to teach a Lab to swim? Even though some Lab puppies begin to swim on their own, some Labs who cannot do it on their own, some Labs which are scared of water, and Labs which are small puppies need to be taught to swim. Firstly introduce your Lab puppy to water splashes and small house pools at a young age so that he gets acquainted with water. If your little pup is scared, do not force him. Give him sufficient time to get adjusted to the water. You can buy a mini Labrador swimming pool in your house to habituate swimming for your little one. You can Buy it here. Whenever you take him to a nearby pool for swimming, keep your palm under his belly or his chest and allow him to move its legs to swim. Go into the water along with your pup. As your puppy feels safer with you, it feels even more comfortable while swimming. Go for a casual walk along the beach with a leash around your puppy and let him feel the waves. Use positive reinforcement techniques such as giving encouragement, treats and rewards while playing in the water. You can play fetch games in the water which your puppy may like. Labrador swimming safety precautions Looking at your Lab puppy swimming can be delightful and exciting, but there are some precautions you need to take while taking out your puppy for swimming. Never leave your dog alone. Even though Labs can swim sometimes it might be difficult to resist against currents in oceans and rivers. Always keep an eye on your dog as a precautionary measure. It is safe to buy him a good safety vest. We cannot expect when your dog might encounter a risky situation that makes him difficult to swim. Do not overexert your dog while swimming. Sometimes he can manage to go out far from the shore but could not come back as he gets tired. Be careful especially when your Labrador is in its puppy stage as puppies get tired more easily. By Tom Massey Jul 24, The doggy paddle: a staple swimming move for beginners in the water. But where does this name come from? Even Lab puppies will frolic in the water once they get used to it. The truth is that Labs are natural swimmers and have a strong inclination to hop into pretty much any body of water — but why do Labs like to swim? Understanding why Labrador Retrievers love the water can help you better understand your furry friend and his needs. This article will cover why Labs enjoy water sports and examine how you can help water-shy Labradors. Are Labs Naturally Good Swimmers? When raising dogs, many people assume they have an instinct for swimming. Things like webbed toes, long legs, and a water-repellent coat — all traits that Labs possess — make dogs excellent natural swimmers. But where do these characteristics come from? Labs are naturally good swimmers because of what they were bred to do. Toss a stick into the water, and your Lab pup will jump right in to fetch it. When you breed an animal with a clear purpose, specific desirable traits are drawn out over generations. Fishermen on the coast relied on these dogs to help them fish. They trained the dogs to retrieve fishing gear and fish that evaded the nets or traps. They had all the telltale signs of a natural swimmer that could handle cold water — short, oily coats that repelled water, long legs, webbed feet, and oar-like tails. These dogs were also known for their boundless energy, loyalty to their owners, and agility — traits that can certainly be useful in other canine working applications, such as hunting and hauling. In the s, a handful of English noblemen started breeding the now-extinct breed of St. Their goal was to develop the ideal hunting companion — a dog that could retrieve game instead of fish but could still swim to fetch waterfowl, pheasant, and other small game that the hunters would shoot down over ponds, lakes, and other bodies of water. Once early breeders started mating the St. These early Labs were excellent fishing and hunting pals with their unique ability to swim and retrieve fallen game. This breed has been using their skills to please their owners by retrieving game for centuries. Swimming is second nature for these dogs! Well, for most of them, at least. Do All Labradors Love Water? Labrador Retrievers were bred to swim, but not all Labradors enjoy swimming. While American and English Labs both enjoy warm or cold water and will retrieve fish, game, or sticks for their owners, not every dog is alike — even with a natural swimming ability in their genetics. If a Lab dislikes bath time or previously felt out of control in deep water at some point, they may steer clear of bodies of water because of a bad experience in the past. And sometimes, it comes down to personality. They might simply prefer the shore on family trips to the lake or the beach. So what can you do if your Lab dislikes water? For example, to help with bath time fears, spend some time getting him used to sitting in the tub with the door closed without turning on the water. Start small, and eventually, your pup will acclimate to water exposure. Once adjusted to bathtime, let your Lab observe you and other dogs enjoying a swim. So, how long should you let your dog swim? As long as your Lab is accustomed to swimming, minute blocks are okay. Then, as his stamina increases, you can let him swim for longer. Is Swimming Good for Labradors? When it comes to the free-spirited, energetic nature of Labrador Retrievers, swimming is an excellent activity to support their physical and mental health. They hit the pool. Being in water enables your limbs to move easily through their normal range of motion, so injured runners can exercise while supporting their joints. The same is true for dogs. When Labs swim, it decreases the pressure on their joints, making it an excellent alternative to walking on sidewalks. Additionally, as many dogs age, they develop joint problems. Daily swimming exercises can help keep your Labrador healthy and relieve joint pain. Instead of dealing with stressful feelings and passing them on to your pup, you can relieve stress by swimming together. Reason 3: Alleviates Pain If you have access to warm water, such as those beautiful Floridian beaches or a heated pool, swimming can also decrease pain. Swimming in warm water temperature is also known to help dogs recover faster after intense exercise. Larger dogs, like Labs, can be overweight but appear to be the right size. The ideal weight for adult female Labrador Retrievers is a little over 70 pounds, and males should weigh somewhere between the high 70s to low 80s. Whether your vet suggests helping your dog lose a few pounds, swimming will help your Lab reach and maintain a healthy weight. However, swimming is an excellent activity to help your dog stay in shape. Swimming for about one mile is the equivalent of running for four miles! Everybody needs time to let loose and have fun, and Labs are no different. Whether you swim with your Lab or toss a ball in the water for a round of fetch, playtime strengthens the human-dog bond, which encourages your dog to be loyal to his devoted best friend you! Playtime with owners will also help prevent destructive behaviors because your dog will be more relaxed and confident in his place in the pack. But there are a few things Labrador owners should know before putting a puppy into the water. While young, Labrador puppies might not have the physical strength to tread water. During their first swimming session, they should start in shallow water. You can fill up a kiddie pool in your backyard and run around on the shore so your puppy can get his paws wet. Another factor is vaccinations. So keep it positive, relaxing, and fun with low-key bathtime experiences, backyard shenanigans, and puppy-appropriate adventures in the shallows. Conclusion Do Labradors tend to like water? Early breeders wanted strong swimmers who could retrieve things from lakes, rivers, and the sea; thus, the Labrador breed was born. But not all Labradors know how to swim or run head over heels for the water. Eventually, most Labs will take to the water — after all, they are descended from true water dogs! The White Lab puppies at Snowy Pines grow up on acres of land in the Ozarks , where they play in the water, have fun with other puppies, and explore. To my absolute joy, he walked out and got the stick. What is the best age to introduce a Labrador to water? At this early stage of the game, I do not think that every puppy has to be in the water. I think that some people may worry so much about getting a good water dog that they rush this step. While you may or may not get them swimming at this point, you should give them the opportunity to walk through puddles and shallow water. Get your Lab out in the rain and have fun with her. She will learn from you that rain is not something that will keep you inside. The last thing you want to do is get a water-dog scared of the water. The water needs to be fun-time and something they look forward to when they see the lake or river. It can be something your Retriever gets excited about if you will introduce them to it appropriately. Where should you introduce your Lab to water? I believe that one of the greatest places near my home to introduce Retrievers to water is Bear Lake on the Utah-Idaho border. Here are some of the characteristics of this lake that make it ideal: Open beach Firm base Very gradual drop off This setup allows you and your puppy to run and play without worry about depth or sharp rocks. How you should introduce your Retrievers to water. Take your puppy somewhere like that on a nice, warm day. Walk out into the water and see if your puppy follows you. If not, try and coax him into the water by calling his name and splashing a little bit. You run the risk of making the pup afraid of the water. Labradors are bred to love the water. Let the pup come into the water at his own speed. Your encouragement will help. Take your time and eventually, your puppy will be having a blast in the water. If things are moving slower than you want them to, it may help to introduce another, more experienced dog. Bring a dog that is crazy about the water in a good way. See if your puppy forgets about the water as it plays with the other dog. Start them out on the beach and slowly lead the experienced dog into the water. Your puppy will probably follow and start swimming without realizing what is going on. Before you know it, your pup will go from racing along the beach to the shallow water, and then move onto swimming with little reservation. All of this, and you have never had to put your puppy in a situation that will cause him to be nervous about water in the future. An important part of getting your pup accustomed to water, like everything else in raising a dog, is frequent repetition. Let him experience it over and over again. Another Option… Sometimes it can be difficult to get to a beach or pond. In those situations, you may want to purchase one of the cheap, plastic swimming pools like this one. I know that you can purchase cheaper versions at Walmart, but I like the option of folding this one up and putting it on a shelf. You can control the amount of water in the pool. While your dog is wading is shallow water, tease him with his favorite toys. Next time add a little more water and introduce the toys again. When your puppy is confident with water up to his belly, add just enough water so that your puppy can paddle around a little.

Boxweiler Highlights Boxweilers are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Boxer or Rottweiler parents The main colors of the Boxweiler coats are fawn, black, brindle, white, and brown. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. These pups have short coats, though they are still moderate shedders. They are not hypoallergenic dogs. Boxweilers need at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. The Boxweiler may prefer to be mostly around adults and older kids who know how to play gently. Boxweilers can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. Boxweiler History The Boxweiler is believed to have been bred sometime in the s by crossing Boxers and Rottweilers together. What we do know is that both the Boxer and Rottweiler breeds have great histories. The ancestors of modern Boxers were used for many tasks, from hunting to guarding and herding cattle. This breed served as messenger dogs in World War I, carrying supplies and acting as guard and attack dogs. Rotties were often used to pull carts and served as guard dogs. Boxweilers are fairly likely to inherit many of the traits that have made their parent breeds so revered throughout history. The Rottweiler was inducted later in .Boxweiler Size As the Boxweiler is a mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to its size. That said, as a mix between Boxer and Rottweiler parents, you can expect the Boxweiler to be on the larger side. Most weigh in at 70 to pounds and range in height from 21 to 27 inches at the shoulder. However, many can be smaller or larger than normal. Boxweiler Personality Boxweilers are very loving and loyal dogs with lively personalities. This usually means they love running around and playing games like fetch with their pet parents. Even with their high energy, they are also affectionate and love to cuddle inside the house with their human counterparts. These large pooches are working dogs and enjoy fulfilling that purpose in one way or another. That means they can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. They will bark or alert their owners at the first sign of trouble. These dogs do best with early training to curb any unwanted bad habits. They can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They also tend to latch on to one family member most of all, though they can get along with others in the house. The Boxweiler may be best suited for larger families with larger homes rather than small apartments. Boxweiler Health The Boxweiler mixed breed is predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Boxer and the Rottweiler also face. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Some of the more common health problems Boxweilers suffer from include: joint dysplasia. They are an amazing breed that makes a great addition to families of all sizes and ages, but there are some things you should know before picking up your Cane Corso Lab Mix puppy. Proper socialization can make the difference between a Labrador Corso that is overly protective around strangers and other dogs, and one who welcomes their company. Cane Corso Lab Mix puppies also have a moderate-to-high energy level which means they need exercise every single day. This amount of exercise will help keep your pup healthy and will reduce the likelihood that their energy will be put into chewing or other destructive behavior. Since the temperaments and personalities of these two parent breeds are drastically different, the cross between them can resemble one parent breed over the other or can be a mix of both. Labradors are highly social and easy-going dogs that generally take well to strangers and other pets. Cane Corsos can range in temperament themselves but can be aggressive and overly protective when it comes to other people and their pets. Labrador Corsos Are Intelligent and Energetic Many people worry about puppies being destructive, and breeds like the Labrador Corsos are the reason why! These dogs are intelligent, and if they lack mental stimulation, their boredom often manifests itself in some destructive behavior. Be prepared to occupy their minds with toys or games that require thought and focus. These pups also have a fairly high energy level. Bottled up energy can lead to chewing and other destructive behavior, so put your walking shoes to work if you want to keep them from being chewed to pieces. Labrador Corsos Are Great with Kids Many people know that Labrador Retrievers are great family dogs and are excellent around children, but they wonder about Cane Corsos. If you do have young children, these dogs will very likely be understanding, patient, and gentle with them. Your concern if you do have children should be having enough time to stimulate your pup mentally and physically. For this reason, Labrador Corsos are perfect for families with several members who can dedicate time to playing and exercising with them. Labrador Corsos, like many mixed breeds, take personality traits and behavioral tendencies from both parent breeds, so their willingness to co-exist with other pets or simply meet other dogs on the street in a friendly manner is a bit up in the air. If your Labrador Corso tends to take after their Labrador parent, then you can expect them to welcome the company of other pets. You should know, however, that your pup might be aggressive toward other dogs and cats if he or she more resembles their Cane Corso parent. Your dog may fall somewhere in the middle as well and be largely uninterested or ambivalent when it comes to meeting other pets. The key to a happy and sociable Cane Corso Lab Mix is proper socialization and training early on. Establishing good and desirable behavior early on will go a long way in making your Labrador Corso as sociable as possible. As an Italian Mastiff, a Cane Corso is among the most agile big dog breeds. When combined with the loving Labrador, the results can range from solemnly interesting to wildly hilarious. Where did this large mix come from? What are they like? And what should any interested person know about these princely and sometimes clownish dogs? The Cane Corso Lab mix, like many mixes, cannot be pinned down to an exact time and place. What we can do is take a close look at the parents of this mix and where they came from. One of the oldest purebreds, the Cane Corso dates far back in history. To add to their misty origins, they lived in the far corners of Italy as Roman war dogs. The Cane Corso almost disappeared in the s before a devoted group of afficionados brought them back. On the other side of the family tree, the Labrador Retriever dates back to Newfoundland in the s. In the s, they were taken to England and bred for sport and hunting. Because Cane Corsos are very dignified dogs and Labradors are not, a Cane Corso Lab mix may be as solemn as a prince or as goofy as a clown. The larger size of these dogs and the variety of facial shapes create some interesting combinations as well. Such a combination will always provide loving amusement and intriguing collections of traits. Cane Corso Lab Mixes tend to be about 22 to 28 inches in height. Males are usually taller than females by about three inches or so. They weigh anywhere from 55 to pounds. Their coats may be black, brown, gold, brindle, blue and grey. A Cane Corso Lab mix eye color is the same story: blue, hazel, brown and amber eyes all exist in these pups. As for their coats, they tend to be short, straight, easy to care for and clean. Though this varies widely by each dog and by training as pups, a few things can be generally expected. One fact holds constant: These dogs will be a mix of both parent breeds and those temperaments. What are those? Labs are known for being happy-go-lucky, affectionate and playful. They are usually easy to train and love being around family. From small children to teens, other dogs and pets, Labs generally adapt well and find their place in the home quickly. On the other hand, Cane Corsos are a very different kettle of fish. These dogs were first guard dogs and fighters, traits that have not been bred out of them. Unlike other dogs, Cane Corsos are still very connected to their ancestral traits. Because of these traits, they are known to be more dominant and territorial. This does not necessarily translate into aggression. Cane Corsos are highly intelligent and want to please you. One of the beauties of the Cane Corso Lab mix is that it can have any of these above traits. That is also one of the downsides of this breed. Proper training is a must. Three major characteristics should be taken into account when training these dogs: The protective drive of the mix from the Cane Corso parent The playful aspect of the Lab parent The eventual size of a Cane Corso Lab mix Even though they are a Lab cross, individual dogs can be a challenge to train. Because of this fact, a Cane Corso Lab mix may not be a great first pup for a new owner. The protective drive of these dogs should also be considered while you train them. Your pup may become a one-person dog. This has drawbacks when you need to be away or take them to a vet. They should also be acclimated to other dogs, children, adults and common situations during their training in a deliberate fashion. Because both parent breeds were working dogs, these pups have notable guarding and protecting instincts. This may or may not be appropriate for your family and situation. These dogs do best with a strong, positive training plan to keep everyone happy, productive and safe. A great place to start is on our training tips and guide page. What does a good daily care plan look like for them? And what should you expect to hear from your vet in the event of trouble? These dogs are fairly healthy and do not have known special needs. Their most common major concerns are gastric dilatation volvulus, ectropion, hip dysplasia and entropion. Minor concerns include cataracts and elbow dysplasia. As with most dogs, regular vet visits to a trusted professional will go a long way to prevent any major health concerns and reducing minor issues. Some tests that may be recommended or requested are various types of blood work, a joint fluid sample and corneal staining. While the potential health problems of your newest family member or candidate should be considered, no major health reasons bar Cane Corso Lab mixes from a happy, long and healthy life. The initial answer to whether Cane Corso Lab Mixes are good family dogs is a tentative yes. However, that can change very quickly depending on your family and home. Cane Corso Lab mixes are wired to be watch and guard dogs. They are not wired to be companion dogs, nor are they bred in a way that balances out these traits with playfulness or clownishness. This can and will change by dog and pup. But the basics remain the same: This is a working dog. But these family-friendly dogs are highly intelligent and receptive to training. They want to please you. If you can provide the structure that these dogs need; know of a great third-party trainer; are ready for a patient and loving challenge, a Cane Corso Lab mix may be the right dog for you. A Cane Corso Lab mix, which is more like the Lab parent, is also an option in these case. However, it can be hard to tell when they are puppies or by your first impressions of adult dogs. If you can embark on a long, loving and intensive training program, these dogs will deliver almost whatever you want to the very best of their ability. Rescuing a Cane Corso Lab Mix Rescuing the newest member of your family is always an amazing option for all. How does one go about it? Try talking with reputable breeds and focus dog groups. And dog lovers everywhere want each pup to have a happy home. Tap into your local networks and check out the usual places. Great places to start are with focus groups around the Cane Corso parent. Because this is an uncommon mix and one of the parents is a very uncommon breed, these pups may be difficult to find where you are. This can lead to searches on the Internet and other remote ways of finding a Cane Corso Lab mix puppy. While these can be perfectly fine and good, please use caution to avoid puppy mills and unethical sellers. These places do not care about the puppies or the parents. Instead, they are simply out to make as much money as possible off of you and the dogs. This does no one any favors and is highly suspect at the best of times. Make sure that if you go directly to the breeder that they have appropriate documentation and care for their dogs. On the other side of the spectrum, it can feel downright impossible. Cons High energy and large size make this dog less suitable for apartments or houses in a city Need more training and more intensive training than other breeds Greater potential to be clumsy and underfoot May be very difficult to find Pros.

world class boxer puppies - Why do you think the police force and military are using the German Shepherd so much? Sure, a Doberman can do the job just fine and there are definitely dog breeds that have stronger olfactory senses or stronger bites but they may not be willing to obey every command in every situation. They are too intelligent to outright obey everything which can sometimes be perceived as stubborn. Does that mean the German Shepherd is not smart? Absolutely not. In fact, the German Shepherd is often cited as one of the smartest dog breeds, right after their cousin the Belgian Shepherd, also known as Malinois. Their will to please outranks. How trainable is the German Shepherd Husky mix? Well, the Husky is known to be quite independent by design. So even though pairing these two very smart dog breeds makes sense at first glance, a Shepherd Husky mix might not be as easy to train as imagined. That being said, pairing a German Shepherd with a more agreeable Husky can certainly help. Genetics and temperament of the parents always play a pretty big role. This is not always the case and even a purebred may struggle with protection without proper direction and training. Always consult a professional to avoid teaching your dog negative behavior patterns barking at strangers on walks, lunging at dogs, and so on. Huskies are incredibly enduring. How could they not, they were bred to run hundreds of miles in very cold climates. But their original working purpose was quite specific and they may need to have an outlet for this desire to run. Training your dog early on will prevent behavioral issues in the future and gets your dog used to brain training. Since both breeds are relatively high energy, you need to walk your Shepsky at least twice a day for a minimum of minutes each. The German Shepherd is known to be a formidable family dog while the Husky can be quite reserved. Huskies are used to living and working in a pack and can be very sociable animals while Shepherds develop a deep bond with their owners. Although pairing these two breeds can produce great family dogs, there are other large dog breeds that are even suitable for apartment living out there that are very patient with children and also perfect for guarding property. Expect to have a very smart dog that will challenge you throughout the day. He will probably grow into a medium to large-sized dog with a weight of about 40 to 80 pounds. Both dogs are working breeds so you can expect a Shepsky to have high exercise needs. A task or daily job would keep them the happiest. Grooming Both dog breeds can have relatively similar coat types. Huskies have a thick double coat, meaning an undercoat plus guard hair. While the undercoat is soft and dense, the guard hairs are straight and somewhat smooth. Depending on the specific pairing, the coat can be a toin coss. Be ready for shedding seasons with both of these dogs. You can expect your male German Shepherd Husky mix to be in cm with a weight of lbs kg. Female German Shepherd Husky mixes range from in cm , weighing in at lbs kg. Apartment Living Can you live in an apartment with a high-energy dog like the German Shepherd Husky mix? It depends. However, their tendency for high-pitched barks or howling may cause problems with your neighbors. Proper training will help and entails teaching your dog the quiet command. Would I advise you to buy a mixed breed from a breeder? Definitely not. There are far too many mixed breeds sitting in shelters and waiting to be chosen. As long as there are no health issues present in their ancestry, you could argue that mixed breeds might be healthier than purebreds from backyard breeders. Post navigation. Each litter typically produces adorably fluffy puppies, each of which may look different. Some will inherit heterochromia — or different colored eyes — from their Husky parent, while others will receive the longer snout of their German Shepherd parent. History: Emergence of the Gerberian Shepsky To understand this active and loving mixed breed, we must first understand purebred Huskys and German Shepherds. As we mentioned, the German Shepherd is known as a herding dog. They were developed in for herding and guarding sheep in Germany. The Husky is a working dog, first bred over years ago in Siberia. They arrived in Alaska in where they ran hard as sledding dogs and stole the hearts of locals with their goofy personalities. No formal records document the first hybrid litter of Gerberian Huskys. In general, the German Shepherd Husky Mix has an ideal temperament. They get their friendly, silly, and gentle qualities from the Husky side, while they receive loyalty and bravery from their Shepherd side. While Huskies never meet a stranger, shepherds are standoffish. The combination leads to a perfect balance. Once grown, your Gerberian Shepky will protect you, and guard your family from anything- all while providing love, cuddles and plenty of adorable moments to last a lifetime! They are great around children, and when socialized from a young age, can live well with other animals. The German Shepherd Husky mixed breed is incredibly intelligent will learn quickly when trained appropriately. Huskies can be stubborn and become bored easily, while the German Shepherd loves to learn new things and have a job to do. If your puppy is more Husky, he may prefer hours of running, rather than mental stimulation. For example, hold out a toy or treat and let your pup catch a whiff. Then, hide the object and let your pup sniff it out. Get creative with your training and bond with your puppy to find what works for you! Be sure to keep your Gerberian Shepsky well exercised and mentally stimulated to avoid developing unwanted negative behaviors like barking, howling a husky favorite , and chewing. Calorie requirements differ based on age, weight, activity level, and sex. For example, a quickly growing puppy requires more calories than an adult Shepsky and should eat food specifically formulated for puppies. In contrast, active adult German Shepherd Husky mixes require about calories, while less active and senior dogs only require calories per day. A high quality food, formulated for large breeds is best. Remember to account for special treats in daily caloric needs! Get the whole family together for a walk or run. Continuously switch up the route so your Shepsky never gets bored. Other recommendations include providing at least 2 hours a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity. German Shepherd Husky mixes do best in an environment where they can play, run, and roam. Your new pet will be most content when able to participate in interactive activities like obstacle courses and challenging puzzles. With lots of love and attention, your Gerberian Shepsky will settle into a nice routine of work and play. Be sure to snuggle up for plenty of cuddles at the end of a long day! Shepsky Health Considerations Like their purebred parents, German Shepherd Husky mixes may suffer from certain health issues due to their genes. When you purchase a puppy, your breeder should be happy to provide a detailed health screening of the parents. Joint Dysplasia causes the elbows and hips to develop abnormally, leading to pain and eventual loss of movement if left untreated. If caught early, the condition can be treated successfully with medication or corrective surgery. Cataracts, inherited from the Husky parent, are issues with the lens of the eye that will lead to decreased vision over time. If left untreated, your Gerberian Shepsky may become disoriented, confused, and even aggressive as he loses his ability to process his surroundings. Again, if caught early, this disease can be treated with medication or surgery. This condition causes the stomach to swell and twist around it self. The risk is passed on to your Shepsky and great care must be taken to avoid it! Simply remain attentive to how much and how often your pup is eating and you should be safe. And, much like a wolf, the Shepsky mix possesses a strong snout and piercing eyes. They may even have two different colored eyes! Puppies with heterochromia are highly coveted and will cost more. But they are worth it — so gorgeous and unique! Just like the eyes, Gerberian Shepsky coats may be a variety of colors based on which parent they most closely resemble. Common colors include white, gray, silver, tan, red, and the classic German Shepherd coat color — Sable! Because the Husky originated as a sled dog, their coats are adapted for the cold climates of Siberia and Alaska. However, they are double coated and may shed one coat to accommodate warm temperatures. Your Shepsky will also have a double coat that requires twice weekly brushing sessions to promote proper shedding and skin health. Additionally, frequent full bathes are harmful to your German Sherpherd Husky mixes natural oils. This can lead to irritation and dry, itchy skin. Not properly trained, these dogs can acquire habits that make the owners clench their teeth pull their hair out. From howling too much to knocking things over to chewing on shoes, there are many things you must keep your dog from doing. A German Shepherd and Husky Mix is very sensitive to vocal commands, making the training process more efficient and much easier. Start obedience training at an early age to prevent annoying habits from developing, and so that you and your pup both can live a happy life together. However, it has a predatory nature, and without proper socialization or training, it might get inro trouble with rodent-type pets or even cats. They can also be extremely overprotective of children and other members of the family. If they feel that the humans they love are in danger, they may attack strangers, so watch them for this kind of behavior. We all know that every dog is unique, so you must socialize them correctly to prevent any untoward incidents. Getting a dog with a Siberian Husky or a German Shepherd descent can break the bank for many first-time owners. Lucky for them, the Siberian Husky German Shepherd is a relatively affordable dog. Be warned, though. Proper breeding costs a lot of money when it comes to veterinary care, health screening, vaccinations, flea treatments, deworming, and many other procedures to ensure that the puppy is healthy. While herding dogs were being bred in Germany throughout the 19th century, the first formally recognized German Shepherd was registered by Max von Stephanitz in .The dog, named Horand von Grafrath, was the result of several generations of selective breeding to create a working dog ideal for herding sheep. The German Shepherd has a very forceful bite, and they are often mischaracterized as aggressive and likely to harm humans. However, while German Shepherds are responsible for a large number of canine attacks on humans, this is largely due to their popularity as pets and how abundant they are rather than any natural, breed-specific aggression. German Shepherds are actually considered great family pets, and they are known to be very good with children, though they can also be somewhat overprotective. .The Siberian Husky, in contrast, comes from Northeastern Asia where they were bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia to pull sleds. The result is an active breed with a lot of endurance that just loves to run. These dogs do very well in cold climates, and they were introduced to Alaska around as part of the Alaskan Nome Gold Rush. While you will still find these dogs working in some frozen terrains, they are now popular household pets. While they are energetic, friendly, and excellent with children, they are also troublemakers if not trained and socialized properly. They enjoy digging, chewing, jumping, and generally escaping any kind of confined space. Both dogs are of a similar size and have a wolf-like appearance, which is part of what made them prime candidates for crossbreeding. What Are Crossbred Dogs? It is worth noting that crossbred dogs, sometimes called designer dogs, are dogs that have been intentionally bred by mixing two or more recognized breeds. It is not a term for dogs bred accidentally or without purebred ancestors. However, crossbred dogs are not recognized as separate breeds in their own right, so their behavior and characteristics are not as predictable as purebred dogs. One of the advantages of purebred dogs is that it is relatively easy to predict their size, appearance, and temperament. Gerberian Shepsky Appearance As both German Shepherds and Siberian Huskies are medium-sized dogs with a wolf-like appearance, you can expect similar traits from their offspring. German Shepherds tend to be considered medium-to-large-sized dogs. Males typically measure 24 to 26 inches in height at the withers, and the females are usually a bit smaller at 22 to 24 inches. However, both sexes tend to look bigger than other dogs of a similar height, as they have very long necks. Siberian Huskies are a bit smaller, measuring between 19 and 24 inches and weighing between 35 and 60 pounds on average. The females are at the smaller end of the spectrum, and the males are at the larger end. As a result, you can expect Shepskies to be around the smaller range for German Shepherds, with males ranging from 22 to 25 inches and females ranging from 20 to 24 inches in height. When it comes to their weight, males tend to be between 50 to 80 pounds, while females weigh a bit less at 40 to 70 pounds. Shepsky puppies tend to have a distinctive wolf-like appearance, with pointed ears and long noses inherited from both parents. Their eyes will either be brown or blue, and some individuals might have the distinctive dual eye color often associated with huskies. Both parent breeds have a coat ideal for colder climates, so this is something that can be expected from their offspring. They typically have a dual coat with a dense, soft undercoat and another layer of more durable guard hairs on top. As German Shepherds can have either medium-to-long outer coats, the same is true of their Gerberian Shepsky offspring. They are almost never one solid color and will almost always be a mix of at least two different colors. One thing you can expect from all Shepsky coats is that they will be high shedding. Anyone with an allergy to dog hair should be wary about adopting a Shepsky! Gerberian Shepsky Temperament German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, and they are also highly motivated to please, which makes them one of the most trainable dog breeds out there. This quality is also why they are such good working dogs. Siberian Huskies are also very intelligent, but they are far more independent. They have been bred to make challenging decisions while running across dangerous arctic territories, so problem-solving is a necessary skill. As a result, while your Shepsky will almost certainly be a very intelligent dog, they might be a bit more troublesome to train than a German Shepherd. Alternatively, they might choose to entertain themselves by digging or chewing. Both breeds were created to spend a lot of time with humans, with Huskies often staying indoors with their families for warmth. This means they tend to bond quickly with their people and are very good with smaller family members though very small children should never be left unsupervised with any dog. While German Shepherds tend to have guard dog-like protective instincts, Huskies are pack animals and enjoy the company of other dogs. So, it is difficult to predict whether your Shepsky crossbreed will display more alpha-like behavior or be more submissive and play well with other pets. Remember, proper socialization training can go a long way when it comes to ensuring that they play well with others regardless of their temperament. Neither parent breed tends to bark excessively, but your Shepsky will get vocal if they want to alert you to a threat. Huskies tend to howl rather than bark, so keep in mind you might end up with a Shepsky with an adorable howl that may disturb the neighbors. If you do find yourself with a barker, read our guide on dealing with excessive or nuisance barking. Overall, expect your dog to be high energy, combining the herding instinct of a German Shepherd with the running mandate of a Siberian Husky. Caring For A German Shepherd Husky Mix Shepskies tend to be highly trainable, so an experienced dog owner should be able to train them at home using basic positive reinforcement training. Shepskies do best when they have a large backyard where they can spend their energy. Remember, they can be escape artists, which means they need a space that is securely fenced. Fences at least six feet tall are recommended. In addition to having plenty of space, Shepskies need a lot of exercise. They should be taken outside at least twice a day for a minimum of minutes at a time. Dog parks where they can run around off-leash are ideal, as it lets them stretch their legs and burn off excess energy. Just make sure they have been properly socialized before letting them loose. They are not ideal pets for people who spend most of the week in the office or traveling for work. Expect your Shepsky to engage in destructive behavior when they are feeling the stress of abandonment. Shepskies tend to have fairly dry coats. Huskies do not have oily coats, and they will often pass this trait down to their crossbred children. Avoid excessive washing to prevent drying them out further. Regular brushing is advisable to remove shedding hair, since these dogs tend to shed a lot. This is both for their comfort and to make cleanup around the home a little more manageable for you. Shepsky Health Concerns Shepskies have a relatively long lifespan for dogs of their size, and you can expect them to live for around 10 to 14 years. Shepskies can develop joint conditions, particularly in their elbows and hips, which can lead to pain and discomfort moving as they age. Adequate exercise and an orthopedic bed that allows them to take the pressure off their joints are both useful tools in preventing these issues. This unique crossbreed can also be prone to developing eye conditions such as canine glaucoma, corneal dystrophy, juvenile cataracts, and progressive retinal atrophy. Losing at least some of their eyesight in later life is a common concern. German Shepherd Husky mixes are also slightly more susceptible to developing epilepsy than most other breeds, though the condition is still relatively rare. Medications exist to help manage this condition. This can be prevented with regular cleaning and maintenance. You might be able to find a Gerberian Shepsky in a local shelter to adopt for a small fee, or you can opt to find a dedicated Shepsky breeder. Do Gerberian Shepskies shed a lot? Yes, German Shepherd Husky mixes shed a lot, and there is no getting around it. Both parent breeds have a thick winter coat that is prone to shedding, so this is a common characteristic in their offspring. If you are looking for a medium-sized low shedding dog, consider something with the Poodle breed in the mix, such as a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat that they typically pass on to their crossbred offspring. Do German Shepherd Husky mixes smell? Many Huskies pass on their low-oil coat to their crossbred offspring. If you do adopt a Shepsky, remember not to bathe your dog too regularly. The lack of oil can make them prone to having dry skin, and excessive washing can exacerbate this problem. Do Shepskies get cold? Siberian Huskies were bred to deal with extreme cold, and German Shepherds also have a thick coat to deal with colder temperatures. This means their offspring are very well insulated against the cold, and you will almost never have to worry about them being uncomfortable in colder temperatures. Overheating, however, can be an issue, so always carry water when you go out. You will probably find that your Shepsky prefers to relax in cool, shady areas. What is an Alusky? This is a very popular designer breed, as they often have distinctive black and white patterning as well as an overall wolf-like appearance. What dog breeds are commonly mixed with Huskies? As well as German Shepherds, you will find a number of other dog breeds that make a good mix with a Husky. The Verdict On Shepskies If you are looking for a fun and energetic dog that will make a great addition to a boisterous and adventurous family, then a German Shepherd Husky mix can be a great choice. Shepskies are very family-friendly pets that are loyal and highly trainable, but they also need lots of love and attention to keep them healthy and happy. They have a distinctive wolf-like appearance, but are far from aggressive and are generally very good with children. However, they are known for their delightful wolf-like howl. Remember that crossbreed dogs are always somewhat unpredictable in their appearance and temperament, so ensure that you meet the dog you plan on adopting first before deciding whether to add them to your family. Shepskies are best for people who have quite a bit of space for their dog to play and usually have someone to keep them company at home. You will enjoy training your Shepsky yourself if you have a bit of experience with dogs, but steer clear if you have allergies, as they are big shedders!
