We understand that sometimes life gets hectic and situations can arise that may cause training to sink on our lists of priorities. It is easy to get side-tracked. Will my dog miss me? Who will train my and care for my dog? What is a typical day like? There is plenty of mental and physical stimulation to keep your dog engaged and content as well as time for rest. Your dog will get three to four formal sessions and several informal session over the course of the day. These will include learning to walk politely on leash and the other basic training skills, distraction training, and off-leash work that focuses on reliable recall. This integrated program is designed to make your dog the companion you dreamed of. Your dog will be trained and cared for by the Monks of New Skete. For over 40 years, New Skete, has dedicated itself to providing the best possible companion dogs for you and your family. Do I stay at the monastery? What do I have to do once I get my dog home? New Skete offers a board and train program for your dog. Some refer to this type of program as a training camp. Prior to your appointment we will schedule an online meeting to discuss your dog's behavior and review an average day at New Skete Training. At the time of scheduled drop-off you will meet with one of the trainers and ask any last minute questions. Prior to your dog's return home, we will schedule an online meeting with one of the brothers. At your scheduled pick-up one of the trainers will work with you until you are comfortable with the commands and using the training tools. You do not stay at the monastery. During your online Go-Home meeting, you will be presented with a plan for continuing your dog's training at home. This plan includes printed and video materials, and covers general information such as getting started, the ten commands, review of the go-to place command, information on the e-collar, and training exercises specifically for you and your dog. If you follow the program consistently, you will reinforce the training which has already taken place and will continue to build a relationship with your dog that is mutually fulfilling. Support for the life of your dog? Our training includes support for the life of your dog. Upon returning home with your dog, should you have questions, simply email us. Prior to working here, Brittany worked as a dog daycare attendant, supervising up to 40 dogs at a time. Josh wears multiple hats for the monastery. After tending to the dogs in the training program he handles all maintenance projects for the monks and is also their cook. Shortly after beginning her employment with New Skete she was asked to assist the training team with coordinating the training schedule and working with the clients. The Building The new training facility is a 6, square feet, modest barn-style building. The design features geo-thermal heated floors, and an indoor training area for times of inclement weather. Each dog is housed in its own kennel and run. Dogs can see their neighbor in the next run. Safety and comfort are key in the design. The second step is a phone interview with Cindy, and finally, a visit to the farm itself to meet our family, both two- and four-legged. These were in addition to the dozens of canines that have been brought from as far away as New Orleans. They eventually moved to their current, more isolated location and set about building their monastery: two wood-frame churches, living quarters and a meditation garden. During their struggles to settle in, Kyr proved to be a best friend to the men. When he died in , the monks felt his loss so deeply that they knew they needed a replacement, said Brother Christopher. Because of his background coming from two water dogs, the German Shorthaired Pointer Lab Mix will likely enjoy swimming if he is introduced to the water correctly. This is great news for any active family who enjoys spending time on the water. German Shorthaired Pointer Lab Mix dogs can get plenty of their exercise needs met swimming, but they will also enjoy at least two walks a day, jogs, good hikes, trips to the dog park, and plenty of playtime in a large, securely fenced backyard. We should remind you that the German Shorthaired Pointer Lab Mix dog is a hunting dog at heart, and he has a very high prey drive. This could spell disaster if you attempt to walk your dog off of leash outside of a fenced in yard, as he could easily get away from you and end up in a dangerous situation. Its intelligence and eager-to-please personality make for a dog that is easy to train and to teach tricks. They have good overall health, avoiding many of the health concerns that purebreds might experience. They are not aggressive and are generally happy dogs but are protective of their families, which will make them excellent guard dogs. The German Shorthaired Lab has retriever abilities. They usually inherit the retriever traits from both of their parents and are happy to play ball and Frisbee with their owners. The German Shorthaired Lab requires vigorous exercise. They need lots of walks and runs to keep them healthy and happy. A run on the beach or in a park will give them the mental and physical stimulation they require. The German Shorthaired Lab can become sniffer dogs. One of the traits of the German Shorthaired Pointer is working as an excellent tracking dog. If the German Shorthaired Lab inherits this trait, they can become a detection dog and work with law enforcement to detect narcotics and criminals. They are very good with children provided there is supervision if the children are quite young. Always teach your children how to approach any dog appropriately and how to play gently with them. Because of their need to play and run, they make fun companions for the entire family and will act as loyal protectors. Overall, the German Shorthaired Lab is a very easygoing dog that is friendly with pets and strangers. Overfeeding is possible for this hybrid because of the Labrador Retriever parentage Labs are notorious for eating too much, which is linked to obesity in this breed so do not leave food out for them for the entire day. They require a lot of exercise, and you should plan on taking this dog out for a long walk at least twice a day. This can also be accomplished by jogging or riding your bike with your dog running next to you and taking them to the park and throwing a ball around. This hybrid will do very well with an active family that plans on spending a lot of time and energy with their family pet. Like with all puppies, teaching socialization at a young age is imperative and train with a lot of positive reinforcement but with consistency and firmness. Brushing just once or twice a week will suffice unless your dog is shedding a great deal most typically in the spring and the fall. Then you might want to groom your dog every day. During this period only bathe your dog when necessary as overbathing could dry out the skin usually not much more than once a month. This hybrid does have floppy ears, and ear cleaning will be a necessary part of grooming. The usual teeth cleaning and nail trimming are additional parts of grooming necessary for all dogs. They are energetic and playful and would play with children and at the end of an active day, they would want to curl up next to you. They are possessive by nature and would guard their families, thus making a great guard dog. Though it is good with strangers, but as a watchdog, it is alert, and would start to bark immediately as soon as it sees anything strange or unknown person around. They have an even temperament and are always happy and gamesome, and are intelligent enough to understand what their owners expect of them. These dogs are best suited in apartments that are spacious, or have a yard for them to play. Their exercise requirement can be fulfilled by running and long walks. Take your dog out for long walks and jogging every day. This should keep a balance between their physical and mental health. These energetic canines have a high playing instinct, and their thirst can only be quenched if they get lots of time to run around and play. Hence, houses with a big space or a yard are apt for them. However, be sure to untie it from the leash only if you have an open yard. Grooming Grooming the GSL is simple. This is mainly because the coat of the dog is short, and already silky. Brush the coat 1 to 2 times a week, so as to retain its natural sheen. Bathing and shampooing depend on requirement, though you can dry shampoo your dog to keep it clean and odor-free. Its ears are floppy. Clean them occasionally to ward off possibilities of infection. Health Problems Generally, crossbreeds do not suffer much from health issues, though genetic factors should also be taken into account. General dog health problems that frequently affect other breeds of dogs in general should also be kept in mind. These include elbow hip dysplasia, skin allergies, infections, etc. Training Train your German Shorthaired Lab to socialize when it is still a puppy. They are also good at jumping and fetching. Teach them retrieving games like ball games or Frisbees. Raw foods mostly bones and meat are always good for your dog. However, if you stick to kibbles, make sure that the kibble is of high-quality and the food is meant for such large dog breeds. Interesting Facts With the behavioral traits of its German shepherd parents, the German Shorthaired Labs can work as good guide dogs. If the German Shorthaired Lab inherits the abilities of its Pointer parent, it might well become a sniffer dog that can be used by the police to discover illegal narcotics, and track down intruders, or other criminals. There was one dog in particular who was terrified of everything and was reacting with aggression.When I got him home and introduced him to Odin, he completely changed his ways. He followed Odin everywhere and soon learned to trust people. Odin is really a fantastic dog. He lives for Frisbee.Odin is two years old as of Sept. He is a fun and energetic guy. Now full grown, he likes to try and cuddle even with his lb. Conformation is more like a short hair. She has web feet, loves to swim, combination coat-has a little wave in it during the cooler months. Probably the best dog I have ever owned. His dad is a purebred German Shorthair Pointer and his mother is a purebred chocolate Labrador Retriever. He is an amazing dog and knows over 20 tricks, along with herding cattle. He is an amazing dog and I think he is a wonderful description of the best mix of this breed. We sometimes say he is on steroids as he is extremely muscled and has no fat on him at all the shorthair in him. Sweet, lovable, intelligent, well balanced. Wishing there could be a forever. German Shorthaired Labradors are loving, intelligent, athletic dogs that can be used for hunting, dog sports, and companionship. They are gentle, sensitive, and need a lot of human interaction and exercise. This cross-breed has been around a long time and is popular with hunters and active families. The two breeds are hunting and working dogs with admirable traits in each breed. However, they were also bred to be good companions for humans that would fit well into the family home. So what are some of the characteristics that you could expect from a GSL? GSPs and Labradors are on the larger side of medium and are certainly not the biggest dog breeds out there. For some reason, their offspring tend to be on the taller side — at least as tall as their GSP parent. GSPs can reach twenty-eight inches at the shoulder in height. The height of a GSL puppy from a Labrador and a purebred GSP can vary between twenty-six and twenty-eight inches, while their weight ranges anywhere between fifty-five and eighty pounds. The females are typically a bit smaller than the males. If you breed two GSLs together or a GSL with a Labrador, their offspring may be a bit shorter — around twenty-three inches at the shoulder and a bit lower for females. The tallness seems to come from the GSP parent, so the more diluted the GSP genes, the more likely the puppies are to resemble a Labrador in size. You will get smaller dogs and bigger dogs from the same litter, but they are all likely to fall within the medium-sized range. Each puppy will be different, even within the same litter. Their lifespan ranges from between ten and fourteen years. German Shorthaired Labs have been around for years and are not part of the more recent designer dog fad. They are high-energy dogs that need a lot of exercise and a large garden to play in, so they are not suitable for apartment living. They have floppy ears and a friendly demeanor and are big enough to discourage would-be intruders from entering a property but are more likely to lick strangers than bite them. Temperament The Labrador is famous for its gentle, playful temperament, and both breeds are prized for their loyalty and intelligence. The GSL, like its parents, is usually highly amenable to training and needs to be involved with its humans. In fact, they can form such strong bonds with their families that they could suffer from separation anxiety when you leave them at home. Their intelligence means that they need mental stimulation as much as physical exercise, which can be provided through training and games such as fetch. GSPs, as pointers, were bred to be able to use their own minds when working at a distance from their owner as a hunting dog, while the Labrador traditionally works more closely as a retriever. GSPs can therefore be a bit more independent than Labradors, but when you mix the breed, you could have some puppies who have a more independent personality than their siblings. However, both GSP and Labrador breeds need a high-level interaction with their owners, and their offspring are likely to require the same. Both breeds are eager to please, although this is likely to be more intense in the Labrador — a highly cooperative dog. Their puppies may lean towards the GSP side and not be quite as biddable as a purebred Labrador. The German Shorthaired Labrador is likely to be a good family dog and behave lovingly to all family members who treat it well. Children should always be taught to approach the dog with respect and gentleness in return. German Shorthair Labradors make good therapy dogs because of their loving, gentle nature. They also usually get along just fine with other pets just fine, although the GSP in them may tempt them to chase small animals, including cats. Neither the GSP nor the Labrador is particularly territorial or aggressive, and so their offspring are unlikely to exhibit these traits. This means they can be safely taken to dog parks and public areas where other dogs may be present. Both breeds are high-energy dogs, so German Shorthaired Labradors will need a lot of physical exercise. You can teach them to go running, hiking or cycling with you and they need a large garden in which they are free to run and play. GSPs and Labradors love water, so allow your GSL to get into your swimming pool when they are big enough to climb out themselves. A daily walk of an hour and a half at minimum is recommended for GSLs. If you are a single sedentary person, a GSL is not the dog for you. The personality of a German Shorthaired Labrador could generally be described as mellow, and they make good watchdogs but not guard dogs because they are too friendly with strangers. They are emotionally sensitive and should never be treated harshly. GSLs can be used in sports like dock diving, hunting, and other dog agility competitions. They also make good service and guide dogs. Playing with frisbees, balls, and sticks is another good way to ensure they get enough exercise. They have keen noses, and you could play games with them where you hide objects around the garden for them to find. German Shorthair Lab Coat Labradors have solid coats that come in only three colors — yellow, chocolate, and black.
