Matting is the Enemy of a Happy Bernedoodle While there are many grooming styles, which we will cover later, the most critical aspect of Bernedoodle grooming is preventing mats. If your pooch has light matting, you can likely take care of it at home by carefully combing and brushing. However, if your Bernedoodle is heavily matted, your options might be limited to shaving or professional grooming. Note that professional grooming is much more expensive for a dog with mats than without. Of course, the best way to deal with mats is to prevent them. You can do this with regular professional grooming paired with daily brushing at home. This might sound like a lot, but the good news is that it will be quick and easy if you keep up with it daily. Using the correct brush, brush your entire dog while paying particular attention to any area of friction. This includes the collar, under their legs, behind their ears, around the harness, and their butt. Though they can get mats anywhere, these are the most common spots that matting can get more severe. However, there are steps you can take to groom your Bernedoodle between cuts. Properly caring for your Bernedoodle requires brushing with the proper method and with the correct frequency. The two main tools you will need are: A slicker brush A blow dryer optional Slicker Brushes The main brush you will use is known as a slicker brush. Some owners use pin brushes, but I have not had success with those on our Bernedoodle. Slicker brushes are used for many types of dogs and cats. This type of brush is generally a rectangle with many fine wire bristles situated very close together. They should bend but not break. Remember that you will be brushing your Bernedoodle daily, so it is essential that the brush is both solid and ergonomic for comfort. Follow Brushing with Combing You will also need a simple steel comb. Start your daily grooming by going over your pooch with the slicker brush. Then check your work by doing a quick comb through. If you have done a good job with the brush, you should easily get through their fur. If not, use the comb or brush to get rid of any mats you find. For example, if your dog comes back from the park coated in mud, then they might need a bath. Other than noticeable dirt or mud, your Bernedoodle should only be bathed every four to five months. Because the natural oils on their skin help keep their skin and hair healthy. If you bathe them too often, these natural oils will be removed. We do not blow-dry our Bernedoodle after a bath. We rub her down with an absorbent towel and keep her inside until she dries. She actually dries much more quickly than other dogs we have owned with fur. However, some people do prefer to blow dry their dogs for a variety of reasons. If you decide to blow dry your Bernedoodle, you will likely need to buy a specialty dog dryer. Because most blow dryers meant for humans use heat. A dog blow dryer should not. Even though they have hair like you do, they do not have the same thickness. If you use heat on your Bernedoodle, you could end up hurting their skin. Grooming the Face We could not have our Bernedoodle groomed for six months due to some weather-related snafus with her vaccinations. As a result, she was essentially living through a veil of hair for several months of her life. To avoid this, you can shave or trim the face between professional grooming appointments. We recommend buying a grooming kit or shaving kit that is made specifically for dogs. If you try to use an electric hair cutting device that is not made for dogs, you can count on it being much louder. This can scare and traumatize your pooch enough that they will avoid it at all costs. You can also choose to use scissors. Whatever tools you use, your goals should be to trim the hair around the eyes and face. Take special care to get rid of any crusties around the eyes as Poodles and therefore Bernedoodles commonly have eye boogers in this area. Grooming the Feet It is wise to groom the feet between professional grooming appointments too. If you allow the hair between the pads of their feet to grow long, it can catch debris, can mat, and can make a home for bacteria. The result can be hot spots, infections, and sores. You can groom the feet with a simple set of hair-cutting scissors or electric clippers. You should clip the hair between the toes so that it does not stick out at all. Be careful not to cut too much hair off the sides of the feet, as this can leave the feet vulnerable. Professional Grooming Most breeds of dogs do not need to be professionally groomed. Bernedoodles do. The grooming frequency will vary by the dog, their type of hair, and the grooming style you prefer. Generally speaking, they should be groomed every six to eight weeks. If you have a Bernedoodle puppy, you should take them to the groomers as soon as they have all their shots. The purpose is to help her feel comfortable at the groomers. Instead of bringing out buzzing cutters and putting her through an hour of services, they brushed her, bathed her, and dried her. The Cost of Professional Grooming Once again, this will vary based on the type of hair your Bernedoodle has and the grooming style you prefer. Do not make the mistake of trying to stretch out the time between grooming appointments to save money. This can actually cost you more because the chance of matting increases with each week you do not take your Bernedoodle to be groomed. Bernedoodle Grooming Styles Just as you could style your hair in a nearly endless number of ways, there are many Bernedoodle grooming styles that can work. During their walks Brock clocks roughly twice the mileage of foster mom and Daisy with his side-to-side walking style. Neither is true! These pups love to live it up at the dog park where they show off their speed as Brock sprints and dives after his Kong frisbee, often grabbing it taco style, while Daisy relishes fetching an orange Chuck-It ball before eventually resting to chew on it. Brock is also a master at tug-of-war who has learned to drop it sometimes after repeated requests so it can be thrown again. They generally do well in family environments where they have lots of company all of the time as they love to spend time with everybody. Pugs and barking As with any dog, your Pug is likely to make noise in one form or another. How much your dog barks will be down to them as an individual. Training and socialisation When it comes to training Pugs, although they are a clever breed they can also be very strong willed. Training needs to be ongoing and firm but fair. You can start positive, reward-based training from day one, whether you get your Pug old or young. Exercise Pugs can be prone to gaining weight that can make breathing problems worse, so it is important to keep them active and avoid any weight gain. Your Pug will need up to an hour of exercise a day. This should include shorter walks, with extra playtime and lots of brain-stimulating activities. Several shorter walks throughout the day can help to stop them from becoming too tired or overheated, which is a great way to keep them active throughout the day. Keep a close eye on your Pug as they can tire easily due to their difficulties getting enough oxygen. As soon as you start to notice them struggling to breathe, stop and make sure they get enough of a rest. You will also need to avoid exercising them in the heat as this can cause even more problems since they can be at higher risk of heatstroke. Grooming Even though their coats are short, Pugs can still shed loads. Luckily, they tend to love being groomed as it means a lot of attention all on them. You can teach your Pug from an early age to love tooth brushing and nail clipping so you can keep those pearly whites and paws in great condition. Pugs and children Pugs adore company and really love people of all ages. They often get on well with children, especially if the Pug loves to play. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding.We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. Yes we have done a lot of the hard work the first 8 weeks as we do extensive early neurological stimulation bio-sensor and Puppy Culture program, along with starting crate training and housebreaking, BUT, they are puppies and will need your undivided attention for the next weeks as they work towards being completely housebroken and earning more privileges. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. They're playful and active dogs who can be willful as puppies but are highly trainable thanks to their big brains. Appearance Though Bernese mountain dogs have a black, tan, and white uniform, poodles can have a much wider range of coat colors. Because of this, Bernedoodles can vary in color. While they're typically tricolor like their mountain dog mom or dad, they can also be pure black, black and white, or a random mix. Their fur can also be curly like their poodle parent or straighter like a Bernese mountain dog. As a general rule, the straighter the coat, the more your Bernedoodle will shed. In both cases, the thickness of a Bernedoodle mane makes this breed suitable for colder temperatures. A curly Bernedoodle coat is typically sought-after because it's considered hypoallergenic. While no dog is percent allergen-friendly, this breed's coat can be a good option for those who tend to sneeze, sniffle, or itch around dogs. Bernedoodle breeders typically offer a tiny, miniature, and standard size, which allows for flexibility with the care and living needs of each pup. A smaller mix could easily live in an apartment as long as she gets plenty of walks and exercise. The standard Bernedoodle can reach up to 29 inches in height and weigh up to 90 pounds. A mini is between 18—22 inches tall and weighs 20—45 pounds. A "tiny," bred from a toy poodle, is only 12—17 inches and weighs 10—24 pounds, according to the United Bernedoodle Registry. Temperament Affectionate and playful, Bernedoodles are a perfect family pet. They are especially fond of younger kids and provide a wonderful lifelong companion as children grow into adults. Though they're intelligent pups , they tend to be goofy and love attention from their humans. Though they can't get enough of their family, Bernedoodles might first be apprehensive, sensitive, and skittish around strangers. As with all breeds, it's important to socialize your Bernedoodle puppy so she'll be comfortable and affectionate around new people, too. She can be very charming and charismatic with positive reinforcement training. Personal space is not a part of their vocabulary, and they should not be left alone much. Loneliness can result in separation anxiety, which could cause nervous habits like whining or chewing. They will end feeling more fulfilled and have less anxious, OCD behaviors. And no matter the size, this hybrid is especially gentle-natured and loves children. They're so gentle, in fact, they don't make good guard dogs: They bark infrequently and are more likely to befriend an intruder than scare them away. Care Most often, a Bernedoodle will have a wavy or curly coat that's ideal for those with allergies. In some cases, a Bernedoodle can have a straighter coat similar to that of a Bernese mountain dog. This means they'll shed more and might not agree with an owner who's allergic to pet dander. Once the litter is a few weeks old, a Bernedoodle breeder will be able to tell what kind of coat each puppy will have in order to match the right dog to the right owner. But with that curly coat comes a greater need for grooming. Bernedoodles don't shed much , so they'll need frequent brushing to prevent painful matting. Most doodles love being brushed, and the routine allows the owner to bond with their dog. Keep in mind a very curly, "hypoallergenic" dog will need a haircut every few months. Just because they're low-shedding doesn't mean they're low maintenance! They'll need daily walkies to burn off their energy, but so long as their physical needs are met, they likely won't turn to undesirable behaviors like digging to keep themselves entertained. They'll also need consistent social stimulation to reinforce positive behaviors. The more exposure they have to new pets and humans, the more likely they are to be well-behaved when introduced to a foreign person or situation. A Bernedoodle's smarts makes her typically easy to train. It also means she can learn behaviors good or bad quickly—that's why it's important to keep up with training, even past her puppy days. Training a Bernedoodle requires positive reinforcement and, in some cases, a high level of patience. Should the puppy inherit the Bernese's willfullness or the poodle's high energy, they'll need more of your time and attention. Health The Bernedoodle lifespan is 12—18 years. Luckily, the hybrid breed does not inherit the same health risks as the Bernese mountain dog. The Bernese side of their lineage has a life expectancy of only seven years and a high rate of cancer , hip and elbow dysplasia , heart disease , and epilepsy. And while Bernedoodles are far healthier than a purebred Bernese, they can still be "predisposed to hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, ocular diseases, and some allergies ," Christman says. Just be on the lookout for [warning signs like] excessive drooling and ability to gain some weight quickly. Hot spots are primarily caused by excessive licking or chewing of an area. This is why it's so important to keep up with grooming—a Bernedoodle is more likely to pick at their skin when her coat is dirty and matted.
