The Best Beds for a Pug Dog Overview Already know why the right bed is beneficial and just want to see recommendations? What about if his favorite spot for naps is right by your side on the sofa? Or if your own bed, full of fur, is proof that he loves sleeping with you? In fact, even if the above is true, choosing a quality bed for your Pug can benefit him in some very important ways. Let's look at how having his own bed can really help a Pug. Taking measures to help a Pug better cope when he's home by himself is a common issue for many owners. Issues like separation anxiety run rampant with the Pug breed, mostly due to the Pug being bred specifically as a companion dog. Unlike some other breeds that may have strong canine instincts to scent, hunt, retrieve, or guard, a Pug's deepest urge is to be with his humans. So, when he's alone, the worst set up for a Pug that struggles with this is to be in a large room or even worse, have free reign in an empty house. If your Pug needs to be more secure, you'll want him to have a great canine playpen and within that, a high quality bed. This works to offer the feeling of a 'den'; and when dogs have that feeling they calm down, are better able to relax and feel safer. The way in which a Pug carries himself puts a lot of wear and tear on joints, and in particular the hip joints and socket. It is important that a Pug has the right cushioning and support under his body when he rests and sleeps. With the right bed, weight will be evenly distributed without undue pressure on any one body point and the right orthopedic memory foam mattress will conform to the body for optimal comfort. If you looked at two 7 year old Pugs; one that mostly rested on the floor for years and the other rested and slept in a quality canine bed.Being a brachycephalic breed compressed snout often brings about some level of breathing issues. One fix to this is to offer more humidity in the air via a humidifier placed within close proximity. And another helpful method is to offer a Pug the right bed that allows his body to curl and position in a way that allows the neck to stretch. While you can always try to tuck a small pillow under your Pug, most likely it will slip out soon afterward. Additional Reasons Why a Human Bed is Not the Place for a Pug Hygiene - Particularly for Pug puppies and senior Pugs , but applicable to Pugs of all ages depending on their level of house training, a bed is the way to go if a Pug dribbles pee or even has a full accident. In addition, since this is a high-shedding breed, there is often a lot of fur left behind wherever a Pug tends to rest; and it's better to have this in one small area as opposed to your entire bed. Worsening separation anxiety - While both you and your Pug might love snoozing together, this can set him up to fail once he's home alone and wants to nap. Dogs that only have access to their own bed when alone can make a negative connection. Now that we've covered why the right canine bed is needed for proper body support, better breathing, and to help a Pug when home alone, let's look at which type of bed might be best for your Pug Bumpered, Bolster Beds What these are: These types of beds have a flat support bottom and 3 side bumpers. These are easy for a puppy or dog to access and are easily moved from one spot to another. Why these are great: This is the best choice for most Pug puppies and dogs. These can be found sizes ranging from extra-small new puppy to small older puppy, young adult to medium full grown Pugs. These offer the secure feeling of a 'den', and the important neck and head side support pillows. What to look for: A memory foam mattress is a must if you want to offer the right support. You can find cheap dog beds for about half the price, but they'll be no matter than throwing down a blanket. You'll also want the side bumpers to be sturdy so that they do not compress thus nullifying their purpose. Also, look for a removable cover, so that you can wash it on a regular basis. Recommended Bolster Beds for Pugs: Each top choice is made with quality memory foam for optimum support. Flat Mattresses What these are: Unlike bumped beds that have attached side pillows, these are flat mattress. Though, some models can be found with one side pillow. Why this might be a good choice: There are some dogs, that no matter what, just love to lay on the floor. And if a Pug is very stubborn in that way, he may be reluctant to rest on an appropriate surface. In these cases, a flat mattress is a great idea. You'll still want that orthopedic memory foam, but you can also find it with this type of design. What to look for: As with any bed for a Pug, you'll want the mattress to be constructed of memory foam that conforms to the body and offers the right support. Look for a quality brand that won't flatten out. It's also best to have a removable cover so that you can wash off debris, pee dribble and fur. Recommended Bolster Beds for Pugs: Each top choice is made with thick memory foam for optimum support. Elevated Dog Beds What these are: Elevated dog beds are cots that are raised off of the floor by several inches and for the Pug breed, these do have some benefits. Why this might be a good choice: These types of canine beds are excellent for keeping a dog cool since they allow for air flow underneath the body and are not constructed with thick materials. And since the Pug is indeed a breed that tends to overheat, an elevated bed can be a great option for some of you. If you live in a hot climate and the house tends to get stuffy, these work well. Also, these are fantastic to use as portable resting areas for a Pug outside in the summertime. A Pug can stay out much longer in the heat if he has adequate water, is in the shade and is resting on this sort of cot. What to look for: Since the goal of this type of canine bed is to offer a place to stay cool, look for one that is constructed of breathable fabric for optimal cooling. Because quality is key so that seams do not rip be sure that it is rated high for sturdiness with a strong frame. If you will be using this outdoors, you'll want the fabric to be mold and water resistant. Recommended Elevated Beds for Pugs: If your Pug could use some help staying cool, these are some great choices. Since it has a stuffing like filling, it can go flat faster than other beds. Holds on to odor quickly unless washed. Not ideal for dogs with sensitive skin. It comes in many different colors that could fit in better with your home, and it also comes in different sizes that could comfortably fit the crate you have. Out of all the dog beds I have researched, this also is the only one that says it is hypoallergenic, so if you have a sensitive dog, this could help them sleep better. Pros: Cheap price for the type of bedding. Multiple modern colors to choose from. Waterproof lining under cover to completely protect the foam. Really thick foam for orthopedic support. Hypoallergenic materials that is resistant to dust. Perfect fit for crates. Flat style bed with no bolster support for the neck. If your dog digs before they lay down, they can wear out the cover quicker. The suede fabric can get pretty nasty after a while. I think it is perfect because not only does it have a bolster to let your Pug prop up their head and stretch out their neck. But it is also elevated to allow for air to flow around it to let them cool off in warm months. It is made to be an outdoor bed, so the material is made waterproof. Pros: Water resistant for outdoor use with a mesh middle to keep dry. Lightweight and easy to pack down for travel. Elevated style to regulate temperature. Bolster for comfort and to allow your Pug to stretch out their neck. Elevated cot also allows for joint relief. No tools needed for assembly. Cons: Non-washable like it says, the stuffing in the bolster will come out. Easy to chew apart into shreds. Proven to not be that long lasting. Can be very creaky when your dog gets up and down during the night. It is made to be water resistant, and the cover on it can be removed, washed, or replaced with no issue. I personally think this is a pretty stylish and comfy bed that could really help a Pug with any joint issues. Even though it is on the expensive side for dog beds, it seems to be made out of quality material and well made. Pros: Soft memory foam bedding for peak comfort. Bolster for comfort and a cozy feeling. Very durable cover that can be removed and washed. Waterproof cover that is not easy to tear. Non slip bottom to keep it in place. Easy to spot clean and to remove hair. Cons: Lighter colors show slobber stains and hair easier. Can become way too hot in warmer climates. It has a soft bedding lining with a plump bolster around the sides for your Pug to lay comfortably. The bolster is even detachable so it can be washed after any slobbery dreams. The memory foam mattress is perfect for any dog with joint problems or aches. Pros: Detachable bolster for easier washing. Non-slip bottom to keep it in place. Memory foam mattress made for comfort. Water resistant liner so the mattress can remain clean. Bolster for a pillow-like support. Not too expensive for this kind of bed. Cons: Sides can collapse from overuse. It has proven to many that have bought it that it is super comfortable to dog standards. It is made with quality materials even though it is not waterproof. Pros: Very sturdy bolster sidings that can hold up for support. It has a good amount of thick foam that fills the cover completely. Perfect to stretch out in and relax. Cons: Expensive for the type of bed with not many choices. Not recommended for dogs that chew on everything. It is elevated and water resistant with a mesh middle. It is very simple to put together and does not require any tools. I think the best thing about it is that it is perfect for warmer climates. The elevation and mesh make it easy for your dog to cool off and just relax without overheating. Another great thing about it is the hammock like mesh that relieves stress on dogs joints. Pros: Non-Slip feet to keep it in place. Water resistant and easy to clean off. Elevated to allow your dog to cool off during warmer weather. Hammock for joint relief. Light-weight and easy to travel with. Cons: Mesh can get ripped and pulled by dog nails. May not be the most comfortable for senior dogs. Cover is not made to a great quality. Non-skid feet can rub against floors. It has a nice bolster that goes almost all the way around it which gives it a nice cozy feeling. Not to mention this bed has memory foam in it so your Pug will sleep so comfortably. Pros: Memory foam mattress for comfort. Bolster sides for your Pug to prop up onto. Canvas cover with water resistant liner. The memory foam mattress is thick so it is less likely to flatten. Cons: May need to reshape after washing. You have to put the bed together, it does not come as it shows. If your dog is a chewer, this may not last that long. Foam can get to be a little firm. It is about four inches thick and comes with not just the memory foam but a firm foam base to keep it from flattening too fast. Though this does make it a bit on the taller side that makes it harder for senior dogs to get into. The cover is removable and washable, though it may have some trouble with the grips so it is suggested to air dry. Pros: Really thick memory foam insert with a sturdy foam base. Washable and easily removable cover. Non-slip grips on the bottom of the bed. Soft and comfortable but firm to withstand constant use. Waterproof cover to protect the foam from accidents. Cons: Flat style bed with no bolsters for neck supports. Needs constant maintenance to ensure there is no mold or mildew in the foam. The non-slip grips may fall off during wash. Too high off the floor for senior dogs to easily climb into. It is infused with gel and is made highly dense so your dog can get all the support they could need in a bed. It is made to be waterproof and even has two covers over it to make sure of it. Pros: Waterproof liner and two barrier covers to keep the foam dry. Gel infused memory foam for perfect support for joints. Very thick memory foam meant to keep shape for a while. Has hypoallergenic properties. Flat bed without any bolster supports. Does not come in sizes for really small Pugs. Denim can not withstand the might of chewers. Easily holds onto odor. I like this kind of bed for the reason that it allows for your dog to cool down fast and easier in the warm months. This bed is not only water resistant, but also mold and flea resistant. It is made to last through any weather conditions if you plan to have it as an outside bed. Pros: Water, mold, and flea resistant. Mesh hammock for joint support. Breathable fabric to disperse heat and allow air through. Super easy to wash and maintain. Lightweight and easy to travel with. Cons: May be hard for seniors or puppies since it is 7 inches from the ground. Fabric sags and needs to be retightened. You have to put it together yourself with tools to tighten bolts. No non-slip grips on the feet. The shape is unique, but the bolster seems like it could support even the heaviest sleeper since it is overstuffed. Pros: Has medical grade memory foam for support. Liner and cover can be removed and washed. Overstuffed and comfortable bolster. And this means that your choice of dog bed is just as important as other accessories like their lead or collar. After all, this is where your dog will spend their time resting and recovering. Find out how to choose the ideal dog bed for your Pug below. What Size Dog Bed for a Pug? If your dogs like to feel surrounded and protected, opt for a basket-type dog bed with a raised edge. When lying down, the edges should just touch your Pug on all sides, so that they feel safe and secure but not cramped. Some doggies don't like this type of bed, though. In this case, try a pillow dog bed without a rim, a rug, or a dog sofa. This is true for all dog breeds. First, you need to take into account the temperament of your Pug. You can make a plastic dog bed more cosy and comfortable by adding blankets and pillows. There are also leather and fabric dog beds on the market, which are less resistant but generally more comfortable. Your dog could swallow the debris from a wicker basket, causing intestinal obstruction or suffocation, which would require emergency veterinary intervention. Create a sleeping area for your Pug in a quiet spot, such as a corner of the living room. Even though this dog breed is kind and affectionate by nature, they might have a temper if woken up suddenly. Avoid having the dog bed high up as your dog gets older, as it can place stress on their joints having to jump up to it. Place a bowl of water nearby, especially in the summer, so that your Pug can quench their thirst at will. This topic is the subject of hot debate. In reality, the answer is more complex. Your dog needs to learn to be alone, including at night. Can Pugs Sleep Outside? The Pug is not at all suited to sleeping outdoors in a kennel. First, because they are sensitive to cold and heat, due to their flattened muzzle and short coat, your Pug's health could be seriously affected if left outside overnight. And secondly, because the Pug is a small, popular dog , at high risk of being stolen. A malicious person would have no trouble stealing your pooch away, even if they did bark to sound the alarm. For their safety and your peace of mind, always keep your Pug inside your home with you. Pugs are companion dogs anyway, and much more suited to life indoors. Change more than just your pet food, change your philosophy.

He would benefit from living in a quiet neighbourhood, with a fenced backyard, that does not have a lot of car or foot traffic as he can be reactive to people and dogs that come close to him. He is a sweet boy that likes to cuddle and does have some mild separation anxiety as he loves being around his people. He would do best enrolled in training classes to make him the best dog that he can be. Foster update: His separation anxiety is much better. I can leave him for 3 hours at a time and he just rests in my room. He is still reactive towards other dogs, but he listens to me more when I pull him away from triggers. He is hardly exposed to any new people but he does seem less reactive towards people we come across on walks he is easier to distract. I'm working on impulse control exercises with him at home. He's very receptive and is learning very quickly. He really is a very sweet dog that loves the people he trusts. He's one of the most affectionate dogs I have met and definitely one of the most cuddly ones. He loves nature and will thrive in a peaceful, green environment with space for him to run around and just be a dog. Owning a French Bulldog puppy is a lot of fun. First off, you should know that if you are in the market for a new dog it is important that you do your research. Find a puppy that you like and one that fits your lifestyle. You should be able to keep the dog with you for a long time because it will cost you money in some form. Also, if you have the right environment, your dog will get a lot of attention from you, other family members, and friends. I would say that the best thing to do when looking for a puppy is to do your research before you go looking. Find a place that will accept your dog if you have one and see what they are offering. If you are willing to do some serious work. You will probably be able to find something at a price that is within your budget. Now, I am not saying that you have to buy the puppy, but you want to get it at a low price. Also, you should do your research about the free German Shepherd puppies Craigslist breeders. The breeders usually put the prices of their puppies higher than what they want you to know. So if you know anything about puppies and German Shepherd, this is something you need to be aware of. The internet makes this easier because you can do research and make comparisons between different puppies. This will help you choose the right dog for you. Most are very legitimate and they do not ask you to pay upfront fees. Or a deposit before they give you your puppies. But there are still sites that allow you to post ads and find free German Shepherd puppies on Craigslist. It is a good idea to use several websites to find puppies that fit your needs. The first site you should consider using when looking for free German Shepherd puppies on Craigslist is Petfinder. This website offers dog listings by breed, age, sex, and location. Using this website, you can find puppies from as far away as Texas and Missouri. The next site free German Shepherd puppies Craigslist that you may want to consider using is Pert Animals. This website is similar to Petfinder, except you can also search for dogs by location. This site has more extensive listings of dogs available in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Dogs of all breeds and ages are listed at Pert Animals. They also have an important difference between the two websites. While both are free to use, Pert Animals only gives you a list of registered dogs. While Petfinder gives you a list of available dogs in your area. Both websites offer free information about both dogs and their owners. You may want to use both sites to ensure that you have the most up-to-date information on a particular dog. When searching on Craigslist, it is important to read the posting carefully. And to be sure that you are posting an ad by breed and sex. Someone may find a puppy for free or advertise a dog that they do not own. You do not want to waste your time or there when you do not have the right information. Besides, you should always use the same name and email address when you post on both sites. You will not have to worry about duplicated information showing up on your posts and in your inbox. It is important to use a reputable online classified ad site when you are looking for free German Shepherd puppies Craigslist. You want to make sure that the site is well known and established. If you are not comfortable with the site, you should not be using it. Most websites are free to use, but if you decide to post free puppy ads on Craigslist. You should use caution and avoid sites that offer free items or pets. Craigslist is a free classified ad site , but you do not want to waste your time or money. When you are not sure that what you are seeing is what you are signing up for. One thing that you will need to keep in mind when you are looking for free German Shepherd puppies on Craigslist. Is that you need to carefully read the entire posting. Be sure that you are entering a free ad and that you are posting by breed and sex. You should also make sure that the person signing the ad is also legally allowed to post on Craigslist. Before you submit a posting, you should make sure that you have done all of the research necessary. To ensure that the free puppy that you are offering is a real dog and not a scam. If you take the time to read the entire posting, you will have a much better chance of being successful at finding a dog that is what you are looking for. A lot of times German Shepherd puppies can be found for free on the Internet. This is usually because the pet store where you got them from or the breeder has no need to get rid of them. As they have no use for them and will not sell them to a pet store. On the other hand, there are German Shepherd rescues who run ads offering free German Shepherd puppies for adoption. The cost of adopting a German Shepherd is generally quite low and the rescue gets some money back from advertising the dog. Now you are probably wondering what the catch is. You need to realize that you will need to have the puppy vaccinated and tested for diseases before you adopt it. You also need to supply it with all of the necessities including food and a bed. If you are not able to provide these for the dog. Then you might want to think about how you are going to pay for the dog when you adopt it through a pet store. If you do decide to adopt a German Shepherd from a pet store and pay the cost. Then you should also have the pet examined by a vet. Just to make sure that it is healthy and does not have any genetic defects. If you do not do this then you are going to end up paying the vet for the service and that is not something that most people like to do. If you are going to adopt a German Shepherd from the Internet then you are also going to have to pay the cost of adoption fees. You will find that the cost of adoption fees can range anywhere. From two to four hundred dollars depending on the particular shelter or rescue that you are using. Again, you will need to provide the dog with food and a bed. So how can you get around the cost of adoption? The first thing that you can do is look for free German Shepherd puppies for sale. When you use the Internet you are going to find that many free websites are dedicated to letting people advertise their dogs for free. You can also check out your local pet store and ask them if they are aware of any German Shepherd for sale. You may be surprised to learn that they are not in the position to offer you a dog. You are going to have to put in a lot of work to find a dog though and that is something that is not going to happen overnight. So you may be asking yourself, how are you supposed to know if it is a real dog or a toy? Well, if you know how to spot a toy then you should know that they are not free to give away. German Shepherds are very active. And if you adopt a puppy from a pet store you will never know what kind of quality that you are getting. Because that is not the way that they advertise their puppies. What you are going to have to do is make sure that you spend a considerable amount of time looking at all of the free German Shepherd for sale sites on the Internet. This is not only going to save you money but you are also going to get an opportunity to see all of the different colors and the different patterns that the German Shepherd for sale has. When you start looking at these free sites you are going to be amazed at all of the different things that you can do with these dogs. Some Breeders are willing to list their puppies for free because they know that the more dogs that are for sale the more money that they are going to make. You can check out these sites and look to see if the breeder is offering anything for free. If so, you can contact the pet store and ask them if they are interested in getting the puppies from the Adoption. You may find that this is something that they want to do just to stay in business. Remember that when you are looking to get a German Shepherd puppy for free you will have to do a little bit of research. You will have to make sure that you look at all of the German Shepherd Breeder that is free. You may think that free, German Shepherd puppies are something that you cannot qualify for. However, you will find that there are many restrictions that you must meet. Before you can take advantage of getting a puppy for free. Breeders are also well aware of the requirements and will try to make it so that you will fall into the category of people that they can breed their dogs for profit. Therefore, you will have to be very careful about looking at these free dog breeders. You may have to meet with the breeder and go through the process of signing the proper papers so that you will become the legal owner of the dog. Once this is done, the breeder will be willing to give you the puppies for free. Share this:.

This connects their name to paying attention to you and marks you as a positive leader, which is important for obedience training and living with their new family. Be prepared for chewing by offering the right options. Biting and chewing are natural instincts for dogs and puppies. These actions provide them with opportunities to investigate the different amounts of pressure to use in relation to the purpose of their biting. Your job as their new owner is to help your pup understand and educate them on what is appropriate to bite, nip, and chew. This teaches them your signal and cue. They should let go or look a bit startled. Follow their release with praise or a tasty treat when your dog stops the unwanted behavior. Do NOT physically punish your dog! Instead, redirect them to a proper chew toy. Sometimes puppies teethe and their gums are sore and need something to chew. Other times adult German Shepherds have a desire and natural urge to bite for relaxation and to reduce anxiety. Only use safe, non-toxic chew toys, which are found listed here, in the best strong chew toys for German Shepherds to avoid boredom. Avoid accidents by managing the home environment. Create a set routine and schedule and stick to it to avoid accidents and train your puppy faster. As a new German Shepherd owner, you might think you need to appease your dog all the time or give in to their excessive attention-seeking. In my experience, this is one of the most effective training methods that you can use when owning a German Shepherd. Put simply, here are the basics to use the Ignore method of training: You ignore the behavior that you want to stop or reduce. On the flip side, you give attention to the behavior you want to encourage. The hard bit is ignoring a very intelligent German Shepherd who is persistent! Give your German Shepherd a job at home so they stay entertained. This represents big challenges as a German Shepherd owner. You must be smarter than your dog! But the jobs can be as easy or difficult as you have the time and energy to train. This is not a mentally lazy dog, but a breed with extremely high intelligence and a huge breadth of application for that intelligence. Calm older dogs are good for this one. Most importantly for German Shepherd puppies, it will give you a chance to work with them around other people, and different dogs from a young age. Settle on a mat German Shepherds are incredibly curious, which can make it difficult for them to relax while out and about. Leash walking — no one wants a large breed of dog pulling them down the street, so be sure you teach loose lead walking and how about some heelwork too? Recall games — Play a game of tennis with your pooch! Calling them from person to person with treats on either side. Get started with grooming and brushing sensitive areas — In long-haired German Shepherds, this is typically the case with the face, legs, and ears, which become tangled the most and may hurt when brushed. Remember to brush carefully, do a little bit of brushing on a sensitive area while feeding them treats or letting them have a lickimat, and then brush an easier to brush area. For socialisation, start working on items that are vital to your lifestyle this week, such as if you have a horse and want your puppy to be comfortable with horses, or if you enjoy sailing, having them near water will be important to you. Getting your puppy exposed to new experiences early on can help them accept them much more easily. Socialization exercises to do this week Training to do this week Husbandry Tasks to do this week — Go to the pub — you deserve it! Remember that settle training you did before, take your mat and get your German Shepherd puppy to settle on it with a nice stuffed kong. Alone training: increasing time alone is important for your puppy. It gives them essential coping skills. Recall — Practise this outside, using a lead, and lots of rewards. Lead walking — Take this outside. Make sure you keep a strong pace going, since German Shepherds enjoy walking quickly, and praise often to keep your puppy interested. Pretend Nail Clips — simply holding a claw, pretending to clip , and rewarding your puppy with a treat is enough. Following on walks — Bring special toys, like the Tug-E-Nuff Pocket tugger, with you on walks to ensure your German Shepherd puppy enjoys hanging out with you. Playing with them will make you irresistible! Week 7 — Training your German Shepherd puppy The 7-week itch! Nah not really. I bet your German Shepherd puppy is doing wonderfully and growing rapidly! Tick 3 things off your personal socialisation checklist — How about taking your German Shepherd to a city farm, letting them watch from afar and rewarding them for being such a calm puppy? Teach your German Shepherd puppy to stay — this will be a great one to show off at the park, trust us. So, first, take a walk with a dog that your German Shepherd puppy has already met. At first, it may be difficult for your puppy not to get distracted, so keep the rewards coming and try to keep them interested in you, rather than the other dog! Recall — off the lead Make sure you do this in a secure and confined area and bring plenty of smelly treats, a fun toy to play with, and your silly high-pitched voice so you can call your German Shepherd puppy back regularly. Remember, German Shepherds enjoy learning! Tick 3 things off your personal socialisation checklist — maybe take your German Shepherd for a swimming lesson? Practice exercises in different locations — how about a train station, or in a shopping centre or mall? Teach a hand target — This is a favourite among pups and their owners. Hand Targeting or touching is the foundation for additional trick behaviours like leg weaving and closing doors. Introducing nose work to your puppy — We mean it when we say your German Shepherd puppy has a better nose than you! Play a game of hide and seek with their favourite toy to bring out those excellent search skills. Looking for more great puppy training tips? No, not your dinner… This is one of the best jobs for German Shepherd puppies to learn quickly. Use these steps for a fun job activity for your German Shepherd dog or puppy: Instead of just letting your dog eat their meal the same old boring way every night, take 3 plastic plates or plastic containers and divided their dinner onto them. Next, hide the plates in different locations around your house. In the beginning, start with hiding the plates while your dog watches you make the job easy for them. German Shepherds have excellent noses, so this is a job they love to do! You can vary up how easy or hard this game is depending on your dog. Ever hear of balance boards? Talk about a great job to give your German Shepherd! And you can impress your family and friends. This German Shepherd balancing activity is easy to follow: Lure your dog onto just one of the boards using a food treat. Have your GSD hold different positions for just a second or two at the start, and only on one board at first. Then, work up to more complicated positions for longer times, for example, two paws on the board for 30 seconds. Who knew jobs for German Shepherds could also make them more athletic? Want your dog to be smarter than your 3-year-old? Then teach them how to work their own puzzles! Even a German Shepherd puppy can learn a new job. And puzzle games are great activities for busy little puppies. There are so many benefits to your German Shepherd learning how to complete puzzles as their job at home. You can give this puzzle activity to your German Shepherd every day to help their behavior and keep their minds engaged with a job. Teaching your dog puzzle games is a great low-key activity that keeps energetic dogs busy. Your German Shepherd is the perfect candidate to follow you around and carry your things for you. You could even have a special bag you place items in as you walk around your house and let your dog carry for you. This simple task of carrying things is hugely satisfying to a working breed dog driven to do a job for their owners. How about training your dog to carry in the grocery bags from the car for you? Or what about getting them to help carry your newspaper or mail inside? How about strapping a doggie backpack to them and letting him carry his own treats and water on your next walk? Did you know that adding an easy-to-put on adventure backpack like this to your daily walks can provide your German Shepherd a job and activity that may help manage their bad behavior? Instead, for your pup, use these safe exercises for German Shepherd puppies to get their workout on. Balance A Treat On Your Paw This is an easy job for older or less active dogs, but even an energetic, boisterous Shepherd can be taught to balance a treat on their paw with patience. Follow these steps for a game for your German Shepherd: Start off with your dog in a down position. Place a treat on one of his front paws. Put up the treat or cover it with your hand if they go for the treat immediately. Advance this game by placing a treat on the opposite paw… then on both paws! For an even harder job, work on balancing a treat on their noses! Plus, what a hard job for an energetic Shepherd to do when the food is literally on their face! This fun German Shepherd job goes like this: Ask your dog to sit in front of you. Do this until he allows you to place the treat on his nose all the way. But what an exciting job to give your German Shepherd! Pick one of these healthy treats for German Shepherds to pay them their salary. The Cup Challenge Adding in more cups makes this job a lot harder to accomplish! In this case, the prize is tasty treats for a job well done! Place a tasty treat under one of the cups and move them around. Some dogs are immediate experts, while others take a few rounds to pick up on the game. This way your dog knows the job is to find the cup with the treat to win the prize! Zigzagging This is a good job for a puppy, too! This is a fun game and a fun job for a German Shepherd adult or even zippy puppies! The aim of this game is for your dog to weave in a zigzag pattern between some cones. Plus, you can use the jumping poles that come with the set outdoors to start agility jumping and give your GSD and outside job. Use a treat to lure your dog in and out of the cones. As he begins to understand the pattern tighten up the course by bringing the cones a little closer together. Remember to keep enough space for your German Shepherd to move their body and hips through. This German Shepherd job is great for burning extra energy and is one of those activities you can take all the way to an agility competition! I wanted an actual job for my German Shepherd! And… What did you expect your German Shepherd to do? Cook your breakfast? Drive the kids to school? Write out your grocery list? Tell you who to vote for? So, you make adjustments and give activities that suit his more modern lifestyle. These jobs are supposed to be games that encourage him to work for his rewards and entice him to use his mind and body in a different way. Your German Shepherd likes having a job because it prevents you from becoming upset with him and he earns his rewards. Most importantly… He spends time with his favorite person… You! Why do German Shepherds need a job at home? Your dog is capable of so much more than fetch! I have seen more German Shepherds with behavior problems than other breeds. And in most cases, the reason for these behaviors was caused by a lack of stimulation and exercise in their daily lives. Not to mention, a lack of breed-specific German Shepherd activities. You could hire a dog walker to give your dog some extra attention, or… You could spend more time bonding with them by getting involved in some fun German Shepherd job training! Give your German Shepherd a brain training program and the right type and kind of physical exercise for the German Shepherd Dog breed to keep them satisfied in their lives. Good jobs for German Shepherds at home give both you and your dog an emotional boost that makes you feel happier for spending time with your dog while keeping them healthy and strong. You can even find out what your German Shepherd likes to play with and incorporate those toys and games into a job for them. They need a job because that is what they were bred to do… Work! Especially when you follow these fun jobs at home for GSDs. You see… your German Shepherd just wants to be a part of your life in the best way possible. Help them apply for some of these fun jobs and find what makes both of you happy. You never know, you might have just found your perfect employee! She has a Bachelor of Science degree, with Honors, and has been training dogs for over a decade. Related Posts. Training It is common for large dogs to dislike being carried. It could be uncomfortable or even scary for some. However, certain circumstances make it necessary to do so. It pays to know how to carry your dog safely and to keep them calm when those situations arise. This article will provide you with a step-by-step guide to learn how to carry your dog properly if you ever need to do so. Reasons Why A Dog May Need To Be Carried Even though you might not do it in everyday situations, it is useful to learn the proper way to carry your dog and to get them used to being carried. Here are some situations when this might come in handy: For vet examinations. Avoiding dirty ground. Sometimes, the ground gets muddy or there are unsafe substances on the floor. It can also be too hot for paws or have harmful chemicals. Going on escalators. These moving stairs can be scary and incredibly unsafe for dogs. Help when injured. If your dog ever hurts themselves or gets in an accident, you might need to carry them to seek medical attention. Mobility in old age. As dogs get older, their bones and joints become weaker and possibly arthritic. Many senior dogs need to be carried to go places or use assistive devices. During emergencies. Sometimes, you need to remove your dog from a situation immediately. Being able to pick up your dog and run away keeps you both safe in emergencies. The Importance Of Carrying A Dog the Right Way Avoiding injury is the most important reason why every dog owner should learn how to carry their dog the right way. The proper technique keeps dogs as comfortable as possible and will keep them from struggling to break free. Additionally, carrying a dog the right way protects you as much as it protects your dog. Learning the proper form and getting your dog used to being carried will help you in this regard. Lastly, being carried can be scary for a dog. Here are the steps you need to take so that you can lift your dog safely and securely: Step 1: Position your dog Make your dog stand in front of you. At this step, it helps to offer plenty of positive reinforcement to keep them calm. It also helps to associate a cue so they eventually learn when they should expect to be carried. This should be in front of the forelegs and not under it. Getting this step right will keep them from getting hurt. It will also limit their movement in case they decide to flail around to get free. Step 3: Scoop underneath the rump Your other forearm should support your dog right below their butt, around the area of their upper thighs. Never hold them around the belly as this will cause them much discomfort. Make sure you do so as if coming up from a squat. Bend your knees and lift up by harnessing power from your legs and not your back. Step 5: Place your dog down To lower your dog back to the floor or on another surface, squat straight down and let go only when their feet touch the ground. Make sure you use your legs or you might hurt your back trying to bend over while carrying a large and heavy dog. You just have to be mindful of the fact that puppies are more fragile. When you pick them up, do so carefully with your palm supporting their entire chest. Then, use your other arm to support them under the rump. Hold the puppy close to your body and let them feel safe and secure. When taking them back down, always make sure their feet are firmly on the ground before you let go. The impact of jumping might be too harsh on their joints and growing bones. It gets them used to being carried and builds their trust with you. However, it is not natural for puppies to be carried just like human babies are. Doing this unnecessarily could easily injure them or might interfere with proper growth and development. Additionally, letting a puppy walk rather than being carried in your arms is better for physical growth and socialization. Not only are they able to strengthen their muscles and expend their excess energy but also experience their environment in much more immersive ways. This helps raise confident dogs that are less prone to fear-based aggression. This is the only way to avoid injury both on your dog as well as yourself. This will also keep them from pain or discomfort that will cause them to fear or hate getting picked up. Whenever you need to pick up your dog, here are some things to keep in mind: Never pick up under the legs. Doing so is uncomfortable and puts unnecessary strain on their joints. It is a common misconception that handling a dog by the scruff is natural, but this can actually cause a lot of pain. This area is filled with sensitive soft tissue. Pressing on the belly can also cause digestive distress and vomiting. Be mindful of the tail. Always make sure that the tail is tucked in as you scoop by the rump. Otherwise, it can be hurt or even broken. Determine if carrying is safe. If your dog gets in an accident, lifting them is not always the best thing to do. Make sure you assess the situation properly so as not to cause further injuries. Additionally, medium to large-sized dogs typically weigh at least 70 pounds. You could easily hurt yourself if you try to lift them without being conditioned to do so. In fact, having them thrash about because of their fear of discomfort from being carried can cause injury both to you and your dog. Here are some tips for success: Start young. Start slow. Practice lifting your dog for short durations and setting them down right away. Keep increasing the time you carry them until you can do so for longer without having them squirm. Use positive reinforcement. Use treats and plenty of sweet talk and praises. This will help them associate positive feelings with being carried. Final Thoughts Even if your dog dislikes being carried, it is something you both need to get used to. This will help you make sure that you both are safe in the eventuality that you need to pick up your dog from the ground. For some guidance on how you might approach this, check out this article on tips for training German Shepherds are similarly large breeds. MA Can you lift and carry your GSD in case of a medical emergency if you are alone with your dog and no other human help available? Does anyone have a stretcher with wheels or without wheels at home or in the car? I was thinking of this today when I had to lift up and carry 72 lbs Elly twice, one full block each time. She was in pain from the salt on the street and couldn't walk any more. She was lying in a snowdrift and really, really in pain. I cleaned her paws with snow. Lifting her up was tough on my back, but carrying her wasn't all that hard. And I'll put paw wax on her paws next time Feli's rehab vet showed me how to lift her up with my arms going underneath her almost like a forklift, one arm behind her front legs and the other underneath her belly, and then clasp securely. I've seen human shepherds in Germany carry sheep like this. More stories: A colleague of mine lost one of her lbs Bernese Mountain Dogs to bloat when he couldn't walk and she couldn't lift him into the car by herself at 2 am. He might not have made it anyhow, but crucial time was lost until a friend was able to arrive to help lifting him. When Feli's back problems got too much for going up and down the stairs, I carried her up and down. She was a WL sized dog, 55 lbs, so that wasn't hard. Ages ago my dog Robin cut a pad, it was slit completely. We were out in the field, a good distance away from the car. We took turns, I carried her for about yards, she limped for yards. It took us about 2 hrs. It is a good idea to carry a first aid kit. Now I know that a compression bandage would have helped her and stopped the bleeding. I also carried her down a mountain in the Pyrenees when she became woozy from low oxygen and couldn't go on. She weighed about 55 lbs, too, and we were just above tree line, so the terrain was easy. But it was a good angle downhill and I had to snake down since I was top and front heavy with her. It was our last mountain hike, from then on we stayed on level ground and went to the sea.

After a week, the papers came through, and it turns out we adopted a Labradoodle! We are happy to have an Oodle dog, but it was a surprise! My labradoodle puppy has straight hair?! I googled and came across your video about Goldendoodle coats and wondered if it is the same situation for Labradoodles — and should we expect the dog to shed? We were prepared for a shedding Labrador, so we are not too fussed, just curious. PS our dog sleeps at the foot of our bed too. Here are the expanded answers to your straight hair Labradoodle puppy question! And interesting to know that your dog sleeps at the foot of the bed Labradoodle Puppies Can Have Three types of Coats Like other Poodle mix breeds, Labradoodle puppies will have one of three types of coats. Curly Wavy Straight A curly coat is the most Poodle like, and a straight coat is the most similar to the coat of the Labrador. A curly coat Labradoodle will likely not shed at all and are the best suited for a household that needs a zero shed dog. There is no such thing as a truly hypoallergenic dog, but a curly coat Labradoodle is often very close. Many allergies come from dander proteins found in dog saliva not just in the coat. We need to remember that there is no guarantee that any dog will ultimately be allergy-friendly. A Labradoodles puppy coat can be straight without any curl at all. Often these dogs will look precisely like a Labrador coat and color. You will see some of the lithe skinny and thinner Poodle skulls and body features. The coat of a Labradoodle does change over time. There is a transition from a Labradoodle puppy coat to the adult coat. This is similar to the Goldendoodle and other Poodle mix breeds. Although there is a coat change, the actual type of coat will not change. A Labradoodle with a curly or straight coat will not turn into another coat type. So if you have a Labradoodle puppy with a straight coat, in general, the type will not change to a noticeable extent. If the puppy is non-shedding, the older dog will likely be non-shedding too. The same goes for a shedding straight coat Labradoodle puppy — do not hold out for a coat change as it is unlikely to come. The type of coat change is gradual. The puppy coat transition for most Labradoodles will not be noticed by the owners. It typically occurs around months of age. Spend a little extra time brushing out the coat at this time. A slicker brush and a stainless steel comb are the best ways to easily brush a Labradoodle like a professional. Which generation of Labradoodle is a straight coat? When a Labradoodle presents with a straight coat, it resembles the Labrador parent. The straight coat genetics are all from a Labrador Retriever. This is why the generation of Labradoodle most likely to have a straight coat is the F1 Labradoodle. An F1 Labradoodle is the first generation. This means one parent was a Poodle, and the other was a Labrador Retriever. A strict F2 generation Labradoodle can also have genetics. Still, you will typically see an increase in Poodle genetics by F1b integration into the breeding. F1 Labradoodles can have any type of coat from curly and wavy right through to pure straight coat. When people think of Labradoodles, they are often thinking of an F1b or F2 generation Labradoodle. It is, therefore, far more likely that an F1b Labradoodle is a wavy or curly coat. It is relatively uncommon for an F1b Labradoodle to have a shedding straight coat! Do Straight Coat Labradoodles Shed? A straight coat Labradoodle will likely shed. They might shed less than a full blood Labrador. Still, compared with other generations of Labradoodle, there will be more hair shedding. Some owners say that they still find even shedding straight hair Labradoodle to be less allergy-inducing than a typical Labrador. Because straight-haired Labradoodles are genetically prone to shedding — it would be incredibly lucky and rare to find a straight hair Labradoodle that did not shed. A super cute miniature Labradoodle named Max Do straight coat Labradoodles have a double coat? Straight coat Labradoodles have individual hairs that extend from the external right through to the skin. Labradoodles, in general — do not have a double coat. A straight coat Labradoodle will have a single coat as an adult. Although you might see a seasonal or winter coat change for a straight coat Labradoodle, it is unlikely to be very significant. Most owners who notice a difference just see a small increase in the volume of hair released when they groom their Labradoodle. A slicker brush and steel comb is the simple way to groom any Labradoodle, from curly coat right thought eh straight coat. Learn the Labradoodle ! Benefits of Straight Coat Labradoodle? There is one benefit of a straight coat Labradoodle that can be very important to some owners. Compared with other Labradoodles, the straight coat Labradoodle is very low maintenance. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Usually, when we think of a Labradoodle, we think of a dog with the friendly temperament and work ethic of a Labrador retriever with the low-shedding curly coat of a poodle. However, it is not always possible to predict what characteristics a hybrid dog will inherit from their two parent breeds. First generation Labradoodles are just as likely to have the coat of a Lab as a Poodle. A straight hair Labradoodle is a mixed Lab-poodle dog that has inherited the straight coat of their Lab parent. They are also called a flat coat Labradoodle. This means they have a high-shedding coat rather than the hypoallergenic coat of Labradoodles with curly hair. But aside from their coat, they have the same overall personality and temperament profile as other Labradoodles. Read on for our complete profile and what exactly to expect from a straight hair Labradoodle. Vital Statistics Breed: Mixed breed of Labrador retriever and poodle Size: 21 to 24 inches for a standard Labradoodle smaller variations also exist Weight: 50 to 70 pounds Coat: Medium to long scruffy coat that is high-shedding Color: Chocolate, cafe, parchment, cream, gold, apricot, red, black, silver, chalk, lavender, blue Life Expectancy: 10 to 15 years Potential Health Issues: Hip and elbow dysplasia, patellar luxation, eye issues Temperament: Intelligent and friendly Energy Levels: High; at least one hour of exercise a day Attachment: High; does not thrive when left alone History Of The Breed Labrador retrievers were bred in England in the 19th century from dogs imported from Canada. The result is a breed with a soft mouth and strong work ethic that loves the water. Meanwhile, the poodle is an older dog breed that originates from either France or Germany their exact origin is in dispute. The breed seems to have been around from the 15th and 16th centuries and was a popular lap dog pet by the 18th century. The poodle is highly intelligent and sensitive, making it an excellent companion. The Labradoodle was created in the s by bringing the two dogs together to try and reduce the shedding of Labradors while maintaining their characteristic intelligence and friendly personality. They became popular in the late s when breeder Wally Conron introduced them to the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia as a new working dog. Labradoodle Breeding Genetics There are a variety of different classes within a mixed breed dog family. The first is a F1 mix, which is a mix of the two parent breeds. In this case, it means a Labrador retriever parent and a poodle parent, though they could be standard or smaller in size. An F2 Labradoodle comes from breeding two F1 Labradoodles. As you head further down the breeding line, you are less likely to encounter Labradoodles with straight coats because this is one of the traits breeders usually control for. One of the purposes of mixing Labs and poodles was to try and control the high-shedding coats of Labradors, so breeders will usually favor the low-shedding poodle coat. Size And Weight The size and weight of a Labradoodle depends principally on whether the poodle parentage is that of a standard poodle, or of one of the smaller types of poodle. Labradors will measure between .Poodles come in standard, medium, miniature, and toy sizes. Standard poodles are quite large. They measure 18 to 24 inches in height and weigh 44 to 70 pounds. Mixing a Lab with a standard poodle will get you a standard Labradoodle, which measures 21 to 24 inches and can weigh 50 to 70 pounds. Medium poodles measure 14 to 18 inches tall and weigh 33 to 42 pounds. Miniature poodles are 11 to 14 inches tall and weigh 26 to 31 pounds. Toy poodles are 9. Introducing one of these poodles into the Labradoodle mix results in smaller dogs. The smaller poodle will always be the mother to ensure a safe birth. Read our full guide to the different sizes of Labradoodles here. Coat And Color In theory, a Labradoodle can inherit the tightly curled and low-shedding coat of their poodle parent or the straight double coat of their high-shedding Labrador parent. Most of the Labradoodles you come across will have the poodle coat because this is a trait breeders specifically control for. But in some rare cases, the coat may show up as an anomaly further down the line, or a breeder may favor this characteristic. Labradoodles with straight hair will more or less look like they have a medium-length scruffy coat, which makes them look a little like a teddy bear. What exactly the coat will look like can vary. It may look a consistent length over their face and body, or it may sprout in longer tufts in some areas or feather along the tail, legs, and face. The coat might be slick and glossy or have a more matte and flat finish to their coat. It is worth noting that while their coat is straight, they will probably not have the double coat of a Labrador. This means less seasonal change and less shedding than a Labrador. But straight hair Labradoodles will still shed a lot and need to be brushed regularly to remove excess hair and stop them from leaving it everywhere they go! But even with regular brushing, dog hair will be a part of life. On the positive side, they do not need to be taken for a professional cut as often as their curly-haired cousins. Additionally, they can be a variety of different colors. While black, chocolate, and yellow are most common, they might also be cafe, parchment, apricot, red, silver, chalk, or blue. Intelligence Labradoodles are known for their intelligence, since both Labrador retrievers and poodles are considered among the most intelligent dog breeds. Labradors are also eager to please and thrive when they have work to do and receive reward. This makes them highly trainable. Poodles can be a little more independent in their thinking and therefore less cooperative, but they are still sensitive to humans. But despite this, Labradoodles tend to be about as easy to train and control as Labradors. This makes Labradoodles great working dogs for disability assistance and search and rescue. It also means they are excellent and obedient pets, even for first-time owners. Temperament Both Labradors and poodles have a friendly temperament and never tend to be aggressive. They bond quickly with their people. For poodles, this bond can be quite exclusive, and they may be a little bit wary of strangers. Labs, on the other hand, tend to like everyone. This means Labs and their Labradoodle offspring make terrible guard dogs, even if they inherit a little poodle wariness. This means if a Labradoodle is barking, it is usually for a good reason, and you should pay attention. Labradoodles are friendly with children, and they also get on well with other animals. They are more likely to form a close bond with the house cat than chase them around the yard. Socializing your Labradoodle from a young age can foster this behavior. Just like their parent breeds, Labradoodles bond with their humans intensely. They can develop destructive behaviors if left at home for eight hours a day while the rest of the family is at school or at work. They do better in homes where there is usually someone around or if they can go to work with someone. So, while they benefit from outdoor space, they will need to be inside the house. This is something to bear in mind with a straight-hair Labradoodle, since they will shed. Diet And Exercise Labradoodles are high-energy dogs that need lots of exercise, usually a minimum of 60 minutes a day. Also, this should involve running, jumping, pulling, and searching, and not just a casual walk. Labradoodles are adventurous and will enjoy accompanying the family of hikes and day trips. They also love to swim! Their straight coats are actually made to repel water. This means it is easy for them to overeat and put on excess weight. This is not good for their heart and other organs and can also put unnecessary strain on their joints, leading to mobility issues. Remember that all the treats you give them during training or just because you love them also contain calories! Want to know more? Other names for this coat type include straight coated and hair type Labradoodle. Labradoodles with flat coats will shed more than those with wavy and curly fur, but they will have much lower grooming requirements. They can come in any of the typical Labradoodle colors, and will most often be friendly, intelligent, and energetic dogs. What is a Flat Coated Labradoodle? Flat coated Labradoodles can look quite different to other Doodle mixes, because their fur tends to be straight and flat against their bodies. Like other Labradoodles, this mix will be a combination of the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. Some breeders may use Miniature Poodles to create a flat coat mini Labradoodle, but others will use the Standard Poodle to produce a large dog. And, Labradoodles with this coat type may also go by other names. Some breeders may call them hair type Doodles, or straight coat Labradoodles. But, no matter what description is used, they will have fur that resembles a Lab more than a Poodle. Can Labradoodles Have Straight Hair? It might come as a surprise to find out that Labradoodles with straight hair exist! When most people picture a Labradoodle, they imagine a dog with curly or wavy, low shedding fur. After all, the original Labradoodle was created to be good for people with allergies! And Labrador coats are known for their high shedding qualities. A first generation Labradoodle has one purebred Poodle parent, and one purebred Labrador parent. To achieve puppies with wavy or curly fur, most breeders will mix two f1 Labradoodles with similar fur, or will mix a Labradoodle with a Poodle. The traits of f1 Labradoodles can be quite varied, since puppies can inherit any combination of genes from its parents. So, later generations are more predictable, and breeders can harness popular traits, like a curly coat. But, flat coated Labradoodles are absolutely possible, and for some people these Doodles make a better pet! Flat coated Labradoodles will often have a double layered coat, just like their Labrador parent. Hair coat Labradoodles may have some wavy patches of fur, but in general their hair will be straight. Other than this, they will be similar to other Labradoodles. They will grow to be large dogs, with a healthy shaped muzzle, floppy ears, and a long, curved tail. Their coloring will depend on that of their parents. Flat coated Labradoodles might come in one of the three standard Labrador shades black, yellow, and chocolate , or one of the many Poodle colors! Do Flat Coated Labradoodles Shed? Labradoodles with straight fur are the most likely to shed out of all the Labradoodle coat types. In the hotter months, Labradoodles will shed heavily to lose their dense undercoat. And, if they take after their Lab parent, they will likely shed moderately all year round. All of them will contain allergens in their dander and saliva. Grooming is less necessary in flat coated Labradoodles, since their fur is less likely to tangle than wavy or curly fur. There is no particular Labradoodle generation that will have flat hair. But, this trait is most likely in first generation mixes, who have an equal influence of Poodle and Labrador DNA. In subsequent generations, most breeders will increase the amount of Poodle influence to increase the chance of traits like a curly coat. Hair coat Labradoodle fur can still grow quite long, so grooming will also help to prevent any painful knots and tangles. As a general rule, you will want to brush them a couple of times a week, but this might increase in high shedding seasons. You should groom your Labradoodle from a young age, so they are familiar with the process, and comfortable with being brushed and bathed. A slicker brush can be great for giving your Labradoodle a quick once over and removing any dead fur. But, in those heavy shedding periods, you may need to use a deshedding tool as well. When bathing your Labradoodle, make sure to use dog-safe products. And, make sure you dry them thoroughly. Dog hair dryers can be perfect at getting into that dense undercoat! Floppy Labradoodle ears are prone to ear infections, so pay attention to them, too! All Labradoodle puppies will have similar coats. Over the first year of their life, they will shed their puppy coat to reveal their adult coat. But, experienced Labradoodle breeders can be skilled at predicting adult coat types even in those early weeks. To increase your chances of getting a Labradoodle with straight fur, choose a first generation mix. But, be aware of bad breeders who may be looking to profit on this popular mix. Choose the most reputable breeders you can find. The best breeders will be happy to answer all of your questions, will have evidence of health testing, and will be happy to show you where their dogs and puppies live. Make sure the mom is friendly and healthy, and that all puppies look healthy. Avoid backyard breeders and puppy mills. Puppies and dogs from these breeders are often mistreated and more likely to have health and behavioral issues. But, they can make a wonderful companion for someone that loves the Doodle breed, and wants a lower-maintenance dog! They need less frequent grooming, but have the same high energy levels and mental stimulation needs as any other Doodle! Do you have a straight hair Labradoodle at home? We would love to hear about them in the comments! Readers Also Liked. What is a Straight Hair Labradoodle? Some may have a scruffy look where tufts of hair sprout out of their body, while also having a short wavy or curly fur undercoat covering their body. Other straight hairs are completely covered in medium-long fur, that grows consistently all over their face and body. Their coats can range from straight to wavy hair, similar to a labrador. They can also be slick and glossy, or flat and matte, with feathering along the tails, and around the legs and face. Typically a straight coat will vary in length and thickness, with no two dogs from the same litter being guaranteed to have the same type of fur growth. As puppies, straight hair coats will not begin to grow out their hair until they are eight weeks old. By the time they are 12 weeks old, it will be clear as to what sort of coat the puppies will have. No, not all labradoodles have curly fur. They have both fur and hair actually. You may have noticed that I have been freely switching between the two during my explanations. This is because hair and fur are the same thing. Can Straight Hair Coats be Shaved? Typically the answer will be no. If you live in a hot country, then during the summer times, it might be worth considering to give them a trim. Not a shave! Just a light trim to help stop their bodies from over heating. The fur coat, actually protects their skin from sun burn, and helps to prevent it from drying out, which can cause skin conditions. Clean up the hair around the dogs face, in particular around the eyes, if it has bushy eyebrows, and around the muzzle. It is best to look at reducing the length of the fur in areas that can could cause health problems or discomfort, if the fur was to become clumped up and mattered. How to Best Control Shedding? Straight haired labradoodles shed a lot more than any other labradoodles. As tempting as it may be to shave your furry companion to help counter shedding. It nonetheless remains inadvisable and should be avoided. It can be lessened however. Just as we humans shed hair, so will a healthy and happy dog. Throughout the year, your pooch will continue to shed hair, more so as the weather warms up and their winter coat falls out. To counter this, get in the habit of giving your dog regular grooming. A little bit of brushing can go a long way. It removes loose hair, and helps to re-affirm the bond between you and your dog, as they enjoy the attention and can even find the grooming to be relaxing. Bathing your dog should be kept to a minimum as the shampoos and warm water can lead to dry skin and other skin conditions. Instead take your dog for swims or use lukewarm water to rinse off their coats. The most important thing to remember is to keep your dog in a comfortable environment, as stress can cause a dog to shed even more. A good diet helps to promote stronger hair follicles and a shinny coat, that can help reduce shedding. Some owners later discover that they are allergic to straight haired labradoodles. While it may be tempting to shave off their fur, in an attempt to eliminate the allergic reactions. This should never be done! Allergies are not triggered by dog fur. They are caused by pet dander — skin particles that are shed by the dog all year long. By shaving the fur off, the owner is actually making things worse for themselves. It drys the skin out, removing moisture and causes rashes to develop. As a result more skin is shed, exposing the pet owner to more dander. As more skin conditions develop or worsen, the dog will start scratching releasing even more dander into the air. How Often Should a Dog be Bathed? Bathing your dog can be effected by many different factors and can be very situational. You may need to bath them more frequently for medical reasons, or because of what they have decided to roll in. Generally speaking, bathing your labradoodle should be more infrequent. Over bathing your dog can strip its fur of natural oils that help to protect their skin and strengthen their hair. Ideally, you should limit proper bathes to when they start to smell a little, or if you need to remove matter from their fur. If they are just dirty with dust and mud, use lukewarm water or a running hose to wash away the dirt. Alternatively encourage them to swim in a body of water such as a river or at the beach while under your supervision. As a precautionary measure you can get a life jacket for your labradoodle. When you do need to give them a proper bath, use a mild oatmeal or coconut based dog shampoo. It will strip away some of the oils from their coat, but these types of shampoos will help to keep the skin moisturized. Over bathing can lead to skin irritations that can be itchy and uncomfortable. Dogs do not need to have baths as much as humans need to. How to Watch Out for Skin Conditions If your Labradoodle has any skin conditions, this could cause them to shed more fur, or even release more dander into the air. They may show signs of a skin condition by excessive scratching or nipping and licking at the same area. Remember mites and parasites can cause just as much damage to the skin as over-bathing. If you are wondering if the straight hair coats are the sort of labradoodles for you, please consider the following points: Their coats require the lowest level of maintenance. They do shed a lot more then other coats. They look more like labradors, than poodles. They may not be suitable for people with dog allergies. No two straight hairs will have the same coat. Related posts:. All Labradoodle puppies have fine, soft, straight hair at first. But, as they grow, a curlier adult coat may replace this. But, they have easier grooming requirements. A Labradoodle puppy coat will be softer, finer, and straighter than their adult coat. In fact, many knowledgeable Doodle breeders can do a pretty good job of predicting which type of adult coat type a Labradoodle puppy will inherit. Labradoodle adults with straight fur have the hair type coat. Hair Coat Type The Labradoodle hair coat type is not silky straight, it is often thick and slightly wavy. This coat type is most similar to the Labrador Retriever parent. Either way, like the Lab parent, hair coated Labradoodles will shed year-round and may blow their coat during shedding seasons. Despite this, the hair coat is fairly wash-and-wear. A weekly brushing and occasional bath is all the maintenance it generally needs, unless your Doodle rolls in something stinky. The hair coat type is most likely to trigger allergy symptoms in owners that are allergic to the protein allergen in pet hair. Fleece Coat Type Overall, this coat type takes greater influence from the Poodle parent. It is soft and wavy — think angora wool and you are on the right track. If bred to the Australian Labradoodle breed standard, Labradoodles with a fleece coat will have one layer. This coat type is much less likely to shed out visibly than the hair type, but it does shed. The hairs are just more likely to get trapped in the surrounding coat. So, fleece coats may trigger fewer allergy symptoms. Of course, with less shedding, there is more potential for tangles and mats as the shed-out hair gets trapped in the surrounding coat. So, owners will have more brushing and grooming duties. Wool Type Coat The Labradoodle wool coat type is the main coat type that is considered allergy friendly. But, this coat type still sheds. Like the fleece coat, the hairs just get trapped in the surrounding fur rather than falling to the ground. Because of this, it can be truly time-consuming to brush and groom the true wool Labradoodle coat type. Earlier we mentioned how the puppy coat has a softer, finer, thinner texture than the adult Labradoodle coat — no matter which adult type they have. But how can you know if your Labradoodle puppy will keep their straight hair or grow up to have a wavy, fleece coat or a curly, wool coat? By 14 months old, your puppy should have their full adult coat. So, the sort of time that a puppy will go to their forever home. This is more likely when you are working with a later generation breeder. Many later generation breeders will work specifically with fleece or wool coat Labradoodles as breeding stock. This means a hair coat Labradoodle puppy is less likely. Choosing an Older Dog Another option if you really need or want a Doodle with a wool or fleece coat is to consider rescuing an older Labradoodle. This way, you can spend time with the dog before bringing them home. You can see if your chosen Labradoodle triggers allergy symptoms, if this is a potential issue for you. Of course you will miss out on the puppy stages. The Labradoodle breed was first created in an attempt to get a hypoallergenic guide dog. However, studies have shown that there is really no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. This is because dog allergens are found in dander, saliva, and even urine — not in fur. So, even wool and fleece type Labradoodles are not hypoallergenic. The main reason they may trigger fewer allergy symptoms is that their curly fur catches shedding dander. But, none of the three hair types are hypoallergenic. They could all trigger allergy symptoms. You dog may yet grow up to have that lovable curly fur! Even if not, Labradoodles with straight hair have all the same popular traits, and they require less grooming! Does your Labradoodle puppy have straight hair? References and Resources Byrnell, J. Reputable breeders perform genetic testing on the parents in an attempt to produce healthier and more desirable puppies. More often than not, breeders strive for curly coated Labradoodle puppies since they are more likely to be low-shedding and allergy-friendly than flat coated puppies. Both taller 23 to 27 inches and more muscular up to pounds , they most closely resemble their cousin pups, the English Bulldog. They have longer muzzles and are more leanly built than the Johnson dogs. The Painter American Bulldog was unfortunately created exclusively for fighting purposes. These dogs are around the same height as the other two but much lighter 55 to 75 pounds. Their breeding was poorly done initially, but responsible facilities are now working on healthier dogs with better temperaments. They are said to be the true American Bulldogs. Again, they are a little smaller than the first two types at 21 to 26 inches and 60 to 97 pounds. Aside from these, there are various hybrid American Bulldogs that are a combination of two or more of the above. Expect to see them sleeping and eating all day and they cannot walk as their muscles are not strong enough. The muscles will become strong, and they will start standing up, running, barking, and playing with their littermates. Their teeth will also start developing and will be ready to be fed solid foods. If you can visit the breeder and look at the parents, you will have a clear picture of what your puppy will look like when fully grown. Secondly, you can check the paws. If they seem oversized next to their body and legs, then they are still filling out and growing so that their whole body is proportional. The growing American Bulldog has a big appetite and should be fed several meals per day: Puppies under four months need four meals a day adding to a total of 3 cups From 4 to 10 months give three meals a day and up to 5 cups. After 10 months give 2 meals a day around cups. Feeding the puppy large meals increases the risk of bloating, a fatal stomach condition seen in large dogs. Dogs who lead a very active lifestyle will burn more calories. The first way to determine if your American Bulldog is overweight or underweight is by weighing them. You may also observe their behavioral habits, feel their bodies, and see the vet. When you look at your American Bulldog, you should see the tuck behind the chest cavity. It should also have a visible waist when you view it from above. Your American Bulldog is overweight if you cannot feel the ribs and the spine. But if the ribs and the spine are visible, they are underweight. They may also have trouble breathing and get less active due to excess weight. When you are not familiar with this breed, you may be surprised to know that they are prone to certain health conditions. Understanding their health issues is crucial to get informed decisions about their health. The American Bulldogs have short snouts hence making them difficult to withstand hot weather, especially during physical activity. Ensure that there is enough water and monitor to ensure they are not having any breathing difficulty. The American Bulldogs undergo certain medical conditions: Hip Dysplasia is one of the most skeletal conditions in dogs. Panosteitis or Growing pan is a medical condition that causes lameness and pain in young dogs. The causes of this condition are found to be infectious agents and genetics as well as nutrition. The American Bulldog however can outgrow this disease as they get older. It also does not cause long-term effects. Every dog can get growing pains. The symptoms include shifting legs lameness, pain, lethargy, fever, depression, and loss of appetite. If the vet rules out any other underlying conditions, you may need to localize the pain to one of the long bones in the leg. Your vet may also recommend anti-inflammatory pain medication to give to your dog. You can tell if your American Bulldog is an ideal weight when you can see the ribs during breathing. An overweight American Bulldog is naturally weighing more than the indicated range. When in his calm state you should see his last two ribs. It also has a tuck where the stomach comes up higher than the ribcage. If the hip points show more of the vertebrae, then he is underweight. Reduce exercises. The American Bulldogs need puppy food when they are young and can be moved to grown-up food after one year to help in their weight control. When you stick to the feeding suggestion in the food, your dog will avoid avoiding obesity or other medical problems. It is good to avoid high-fat treats and provide a good choice of treats such as carrots. Treats made with proteins are also a good choice in helping them get in shape. When your American Bulldog is overweight change the diet to low calories ad high protein and has no carbs because they function as pointless fillers. Exercise your American Bulldog regularly but ensure you do not overdo it to prevent joint strains. You can determine your American Bulldog weight using two methods; The most accurate method to use is using a dog weighing scale. Using the scale is important in monitoring the growth of your American Bulldog regularly to detect any early abnormal growth. The scale will help you to weigh your dog without any hassle. The second method is using your bathroom scale. You weigh yourself when holding your American Bulldog and record the readings. Then weigh yourself using the same scale without your American Bulldog. Then you subtract your weight when not holding the dog from the weight with the dog, and the difference is the weight of your American Bulldog. American Bulldog Genetics and Common Health Problems Hip and elbow dysplasia is an inherited disease that leads to joints developing improperly causing arthritis. The dog may begin to show lameness in the legs or difficulty when getting up from lying. Surgery is a good option in extreme cases. Nerve disease is a progressive neurologic disease that can be found in the American Bulldog. The signs usually appear in younger dogs where there is a rear leg weakness and imbalance. This disease has no effective treatment, but you can perform a genetic test. Dogs with this genetic condition should not be used for breeding. A thyroid problem is a condition where the body does not make enough thyroid hormone. The signs of this condition include hair loss, dry coat, and skin, weight gain, susceptibility to other skin diseases, aggression, and fearfulness. Blood screening can help detect disease. Ichthyosis is a common problem where there is dry, itchy, and flaky skin. The American Bulls are prone to severe sin flaking conditions. It usually arises early in life with most affected puppies born with abnormal skin. A genetic test will help determine whether a puppy is clear of this condition. Other conditions include cataracts, mange, and bladder or kidney stones. Final Words Understanding the different factors that can impact the growth of your American Bulldog will ensure that you are well equipped on how you can help them achieve their growth and development. You should be aware of the different health conditions that this breed is susceptible to so that you can notice the early signs and provide them with the necessary treatment. Growing American Bulldog puppies will have a big appetite! You should feed your pup several meals a day. For puppies under 4 months: feed 4 meals a day For puppies from months: feed 3 meals a day After 10 months: feed 2 meals a day You should never switch to feeding just one large meal every day.
