Exercise Grooming In the past, the English bulldog was used by foreign immigrants who moved to South America and brought their dogs with them. The breed, however, became close to extinction after the second world war. Some breeders, John D. Johnson, and Alan Scott kept infusing several bulldogs together in the bid to breed the American Bulldog while monitoring its health and capabilities. Today, the American bulldog is completely rid of the fear of being extinct and has become one of the most popular dog breeds in the country. The American bulldog is many sizes larger than the English Bulldog; however, they are quite similar when it comes to their temperament. It is basically a huge, cuddly, lap dog that loves children and is very affectionate. It is brave, confident and extremely loyal to its owners. They can be quite reserved when around strangers as they like to mark their territories. When trained from a young age, the American Bulldog will display an impressive level of intelligence. They are not so friendly with other strange dogs and mostly like to keep to themselves. As earlier stated, the American bulldog is a fun-loving, happy dog that thrives in a family setting. The perfect environment for this breed would be a home with a large backyard that is well fenced-in. Since they are very energetic and must be kept active, it is imperative to their growth that they have ample space to run around during the day. This is crucial for their mental and physical well-being. For dog lovers who live in apartments, the American bulldog might not be the best option for them. This is because there is inadequate space for them and being left alone would adversely affect their mental health. They can also become very irritable and destructive if left alone for long periods as they need constant mental and physical stimulation. The American Bulldog needs about two hours of outdoor exercise on a daily basis. It goes without saying that this breed is not suitable for people who work many hours every day. This dog breed requires basic physical and mental stimulation like jogging, walking, chasing balls, playing fetch, farm work, agility, and basic obedience exercises. Due to the temperament of the American Bulldog, it has to get as much exercise preferably in the outdoors. If its exercise requirements are not consistently met, this dog breed will take out its frustration in your home by chewing apart and basically destroying everything it comes in contact with while running around. The American Bulldog has quite a short coat with a minimized length and this feature makes it easy to groom. Brushing their coats weekly is usually enough when it comes to grooming the American Bulldog as they do not shed a lot. They also need thorough baths weekly or as needed as this will keep the shedding in check. Our American Bulldog puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. We only purchase puppies from the very best sources, and we stand behind every puppy we sell. American Bulldogs love routine and will adapt to an exercise and grooming routine if the owner enforces it perfectly. As loyal dogs, they love to please their owners but will only obey upon frequent reinforcements. Do American Bulldogs shed a lot? Since they do not have a lot of fur, they do not shed a lot and owners will not have a lot of hair to clean up, unlike many other dog breeds. Why do American Bulldogs have webbed feet? This is mainly due to genetics and is not a cause for concern. Should American Bulldogs be spayed? Many vets advise that American Bulldog owners should ensure their pets are neutered or spayed when it is between four and nine months. How often should American Bulldogs be fed? The American bulldog has a very large appetite in its formative years. They must, therefore, be fed very often about four times daily and in double portions when they are puppies right until they turn four. Are American Bulldogs a food fit in families? The American bulldog will fit right into your family. They love kids and tend to gravitate towards them. Do American Bulldogs have common health problems? A lot of the health problems experienced by American bulldogs are mostly genetic and do not affect the entire breed. These ailments could range from the kidney to thyroid disorders and a lot more. What is the American Bulldogs life expectancy? The American bulldog has an average lifespan ranging from ten to fifteen years. What is the American Bulldogs average size? The average American Bulldog can grow to 58kg for males and 41kg for females. However, it is important that their diets are closely monitored to keep them from getting overweight. How tall do American Bulldogs get? The male American bulldog can grow as tall as 71cm while its female counterpart can grow up to 61cm. If you want a loyal, smart and incredibly active dog, then the American Bulldog is the perfect fit for you. Are you interested in purchasing a American Bulldog? Like all hybrid dogs, the appearance of a Doxiepoo is not predictable. However, some people believe that it might have first been created around the s. The craze for designer dogs began a few decades ago when the first Doodle mix a hybrid dog having one Poodle parent was created. The resulting cross was hypoallergenic and also smart — which enhanced its trainability. Soon, more and more dog fanciers were demanding small-sized Doodles. One such small Doodle mix was the Doxiepoo. Doxiepoos are cute, cuddly, and compact dogs, having Poodle genes that make them fairly easy to train. This can be advantageous given the fact that the Dachshund breed is known for its stubborn streak. Being a hybrid dog, the Doxiepoo is not registered with the Australian Kennel Club. However, in the USA the American Canine Hybrid Club keeps a track of the parentage and heritage of such hybrid dog breeds and Australia has similar associations. How Big will a Doxiepoo Puppy Get? As stated earlier, it can be difficult to predict the exact height, weight, and appearance of Doxiepoos. Most Doxiepoos weigh between 5 and 30 lb. The delightful little dogs could inherit the curly, tight coat of a Poodle or they could acquire a coat like that of its Dachshund parent. Dachshunds are themselves available in three coat varieties: long, smooth, or wiry. Accordingly, your Doxiepoo could have a short, curly, medium, long, wavy, or smooth coat. As such, no two Doxiedoodles will look the same. After all; canine genetics can be quite complex and the puppies could take after either parent. Doxiepoo puppies are available in various coat colours including red, tan, cream, white, black, beige, liver, brown, chocolate, merle, pied, parti, phantom and combinations thereof. Do Doxiepoo Dogs Shed? The Poodle breed is non-shedding but Dachshunds could shed depending on their coat type. The long-haired Dachshund variety sheds significantly. So, you might want to check with the breeder about which Dachshund type was used in the breeding program. The best breeders of poodle mix breeds, use DNA testing to check for coat traits in their breeding dogs. Traits such as furnishings and shedding genes are particularly important to consider in any breeding program aiming to produce hypoallergenic family pets. However, if it inherits more of the Dachshund genes, then you should expect some shedding. Likewise, a Doxiepoo bred back to a Dachshund especially the long-haired type will have a longer coat that is also prone to shedding. Do Doxiepoos Need Grooming? All Doodle breeds need regular grooming as they have sensitive skin. You can choose to keep your Doxiepoo looking like a Poodle or keep it uniformly clipped in a puppy cut throughout. You can also groom your Doxiedoodle at home- just make sure to brush it daily to remove the trapped debris in its coat. Failure to do so could lead to mats and tangles which can be painful for your dog. Is Doxiepoo a Good Dog? Doxiepoos make excellent family pets provided they get proper training and socialisation at the right age. They mostly get along with kids and since they are inherently playful, they love their company. However, as with any dog, it is important to socialise your Doxiepoo with children from puppyhood. It is equally important to teach children to be respectful to and gentle with the small dog. Doxiepoos generally fare well with elderly or mobility-impaired people. However, they need daily exercise so there should be someone around to train and walk them. A larger Doxiepoo will need more exercise although the smaller Doodles should not be made into couch potatoes. Smaller Doodles are fine with one short walk a day followed by indoor play sessions. Without exercise, these small dogs tend to get bored and restless. Younger Doxiepoos are extremely energetic so you need to make sure to stimulate their bodies as well as their minds on a daily basis. Environmental enrichment activities such as stuffed Kongs , food puzzles, licky mats and snuffle mats will be very helpful in keeping your Doxiepoo puppy stimulated and occupied. Do Doxiepoos Bark a Lot? Doxiepoos are generally happy, affectionate, and cheerful dogs. They are also playful and energetic. However, like all Doodles, they have a tendency to jump and bark. Therefore, your Doxiepoo puppy and you! Untrained Doxiepoos will jump on or bark at every person that enters your home or at anybody they meet on the street. It is just one of the traits of a Doxiepoo. Not everybody appreciates this behaviour. So, you need to train your Doodle to do a behaviour such as sitting quietly for attention. You will also have to be very consistent and patient with training and always use positive reinforcement. Doxiepoos even tend to jump on other dogs. Some dogs can be patient with them but not all. Pay careful attention to how your Doodle greets other dogs. You might also want to enrol your puppy in obedience school, puppy preschool or group training classes so they can learn to interact appropriately with other dogs. The good news is that Doxiepoos are highly trainable. However, training should start from an early age. Can Doxiepoos Be Left Alone? Doodles are known to suffer from extreme separation anxiety. After all; they love their humans and consider them their pack. When separated from you, Doxiepoos tend to feel despondent and insecure. Some bark and whine while others get destructive. Some might even chew their paws raw. If you have to leave your young Doxiepoo alone for long periods of time, consider enrolling it in doggy daycare. That way, your puppy can play with other dogs, get exercise, and also be around people. Adult Doxiepoos might do well being left alone but you may want to have a dog walker come in at least once a day to take them out. Good breeders spend time and money on health testing the parent dogs. The Dachshund dog breed is known to suffer from several health issues and genetic problems more about this later in the guide. Therefore, testing is a must. The best, responsible dog breeders only use healthy dogs in their breeding programs. They react to certain foods especially dairy, grains like wheat or corn, fillers, and other artificial ingredients. The Poodle dog breed is prone to skin issues and eating certain foods causes them to break into rashes, hives, itching, and hair loss. This is often passed on to the Doxiepoo offspring. It is best to consult a vet nutritionist about the right food for your Doxiepoo. These days, there are several types of foods specially formulated for sensitive dogs. You can choose from a hypoallergenic and grain-free diet, homemade food, raw dog food , or special vet-prescribed foods. In general, a diet rich in protein with meats like chicken, turkey, fish, lamb, etc. Most Doxiepoos live a healthy life but any dog can fall prey to ill-health. The Dachshund breed is known to be chondrodystrophic which causes various back issues in them. It is important that you are aware of these issues so you can watch out for the warning signs. The parent dogs should be tested for joint issues and genetic problems in the breed and only dogs that demonstrate excellent health should be used. Poodles also carry the genes for a number of eye problems so good breeders should make it a point to test them through DNA testing and CERF eye exams. Healthy Doxiepoos are known to live for years depending on their size. Smaller dogs generally live longer. The Doxiepoo is a fairly rare designer dog breed in Australia. All dogs are unique and grow at their own rate. Pro Tip: Check out our complete guide to puppy care to ensure your Lab gets off to a great start. As a medium to large breed, Labrador Retrievers need at least one year to reach their full size. A general rule of thumb suggests your Lab should be at or close to its full size by their first birthday. However, bigger-boned Lab puppies can keep growing and filling out their chest up to 18 months old. How big should a 6-month-old Labrador Retriever be? The average Lab weight at six months old is about 40 to 55 pounds for males or 30 to 35 pounds for females. Please keep in mind that these numbers are averages, and every puppy will grow at a slightly different rate. How much bigger will my Labrador Retriever get? There are three ways to predict the size of a Labrador Retriever at maturity: Age. Labrador Retrievers typically reach their full height and weight around their first birthday. Larger Labs may need up to 18 months to fill out their chest, but any weight gain after 12 months should be minimal overall. If your Lab is less than a year old, they are likely still growing and putting on muscle to reach their adult size. Paw Size. If their paws look oversized next to their legs and body, then they are probably still growing, as this is a classic puppy feature. Lastly, if you purchased your Lab through a breeder, you can contact them for a more exact height and weight estimate. What is the size of a full-grown Labrador Retriever? A full-grown Labrador Retriever weighs between 65 and 80 pounds and stands about .The average weight of a full-grown female Labrador Retriever should be about 55 to 70 pounds, standing at .Make sure to consult with your veterinarian to ensure that your Lab is maintaining a healthy weight for its body size. The Labrador Retriever growth rate should be indicative of its athletic body and muscular build. Did you know. ? Their webbed paws made them strong swimmers, along with their otter tail, which acts like a powerful rudder when retrieving ducks. English nobles spotted the dogs and brought them home across the Atlantic, where breeders continued to refine the breed into its own variation. Between their friendly demeanor, adaptability, and outgoing disposition, they make ideal family members. As cherished members of our families, Labs deserve the best care. Unfortunately, like many other purebred dogs, Labrador Retrievers are more susceptible to various health issues. Some of the most common examples include:. You should take your puppy outdoors and let him exercise his socialization potential at a young age. Visiting friends and family is one way to go about it. You can also spot a dog park and carry him there. Remember that your pet is still learning to follow directions and walk with you. You cannot expect him to cover long distances. The best way to avoid this is to take them far enough from the house and ensure they have a positive outside experience. It is worth noting that you should do this as often as you can, preferably daily. Start Potty Training It would be best to start potty training your Lab puppy the first day you bring him home. Start by showing your pup where you want him to potty, such as a sectioned-off area of your yard or garden. A good idea is to cordon off a small area and add some bark chippings. Next, you need a potty training schedule such as first thing in the morning, after mealtimes and play, and hourly for young pups. Many owners use dog crates to help with house training. I have a step-by-step guide on Labrador puppy crate training where you can learn tons more. Discourage Biting If you follow my blog, you know I am against punishment-oriented training. If you train your dog young enough to avoid harsh bites, you will not need punishment-driven discipline strategies. In any case, using physical force or yelling at your pup will only instill fear and distrust and can cause aggression in your dog. You can also check out my article, How to Discipline a Labrador , for greater insight into this topic. Instead, you can wait until your Labrador bites during a positive activity and then discontinue it. It will anchor the consequence better. Follow up using positive reinforcement by rewarding the correct behavior with a treat. Your Labrador will quickly learn that displaying good behavior reaps nice things. Puppies need to learn their bite inhibition soft-mouth by continuing the excellent work their mother and siblings taught them. Learn Bite Inhibition Training! Instill Patience You must use your best judgment when training your dog to be patient. Generally speaking, your Labrador will be mature enough to learn self-control by the tenth week. You can use a clicker or a whistle to teach your puppy to assume the natural heel position. Chances are, at first, your Labrador will try to change his pace to be behind you because of the force of habit. Walking in areas familiar to your dog will eliminate this problem. While you previously trained him to assume a heel position, you can also teach him these techniques. You may notice that your puppy can tell your words apart by the thirteenth week. So by the time he is four months old, you can use the position cues and positive reinforcement to get your dog to follow. These included whistling, clapping, or saying a specific word to indicate that your Labrador is doing a good job, typically followed by a well-deserved treat. Now is the time to see whether the anchors work! Where you previously whistled when your Lab ran towards you, now you must whistle, so he begins his run. This is the start of his Labrador recall training. Teaching good recall is an ongoing process. My dog was around 12 months old before seeing a noticeable improvement in her recall. Please avoid forcing the dog, as that only introduces confusion. Build Comfort With Crowds — Work on Socialization You have trained your Labrador to acknowledge close friends and family in the past few weeks. While this enables the puppy to be more social when you have visitors, a grown dog must learn to walk outdoors without acting out. This transition must be gradual, and try to keep experiences positive. Whether it is a cuddle, a pat, attention, or something tasty, you must teach your pup target training , for example, to touch a target with a specific part of his body. Remember that your Lab may end up biting or clawing to communicate if you do not teach him more acceptable communication methods. Here, I recommend teaching your Labrador to touch your hand with his nose. Ultimately, this is an excellent replacement for bites! Hand targeting is fun to teach, helps your pup build trust, and gets him using his brain! You have laid a strong foundation of discipline and positive reinforcement, making it easier to train your dog to follow more complex commands. In these weeks, you will introduce him to assuming different positions, obeying your commands as he moves away from you, and reacting to more nuanced anchors. Remember, 4-month-old Labrador puppies have a short attention span, so avoid long training sessions. Teach the Sit and Stay Teaching your Lab to sit and stay is a useful command for him to learn. Train Your Dog to Fetch If you have taken your Labrador to public parks and he has seen other dogs play fetch, it will be easier to teach him to retrieve whatever you throw. Your Labrador may not bring the toy back to you for a second round, but he will soon get the idea of retrieving it. You can gradually turn it into a game of fetch over the next few weeks and reward your doggo with high-value training treats. Continue Potty Training In the fourth month of Labrador training, you will continue potty training with a degree of independence. Continue with a good schedule and sync your walks with his natural cycle to align with the times he needs to go. You can use it to control your Labrador and later to test his ability to execute a command off-leash. A harness is also a good idea and is used for outdoor training and walks. Many owners will opt for a rear-attaching harness. Related: Harness vs. Collar for Lab Puppy: Which is Best? How to Train a 5-Month-Old Lab Puppy A five-month-old Labrador puppy is ready to be tested for his general obedience and the ability to deal with distractions, whether other dogs, people, or other animals such as squirrels or birds. Earlier, I mentioned that you could not expect an eight-week-old puppy to delay gratification. Your puppy can deal with distractions at five months old if you introduce them slowly. You must be prepared for your dog to run ahead of you now! However, suppose you have developed a solid relationship with your pup and worked on his training. In that case, he will stay within a reasonable distance, remaining by your side and showing loyalty. Once your Lab puppy has reached his 6-month milestone, it also marks the point where you introduce him to advanced obedience training. The good news is that all the training you have previously given will make it easier for your dog to follow your lead. Conclude Potty Training Your dog has had months to learn how to communicate his need to go potty. He has also likely refined the patience to hold it instead of relieving himself on the floor. Therefore, you can communicate your disappointment with your body language if your dog makes a mess. Avoid physical punishment and even verbal chastising as it impacts your dog negatively. All dogs can still have the odd accident up to 12 months old. Moreover, you must be prepared for your dog to relieve himself indoors if he is excited or frightened, known as either excitement or submissive urination. Increase Exercise Now that your Lab puppy is six months old, you can increase his exercise to thirty minutes twice daily. Energy levels, especially for larger breed dogs, escalate during this time. While the average exercise for a pup before this is generally five minutes of exercise per month of age, twice a day, a six-month-old Labrador can be out for one hour if you split his walks into thirty minutes a day. To train your 6-month-old Lab puppy, start with two commands with the most practical use. From six months onwards, until your Labrador is a well-trained adult, you can teach the following commands or tricks in any order. How to Train a 7-Month-Old Labrador As your Lab progresses to seven months old, a lot of the previous training needs to be kept consistent as you gradually teach him to comprehend more commands. Maybe there is a trespasser, and you want your dog to scare them away. You will need to continue training your dog to hold things or release them on command, but you can also proceed to add distance and even more background distractions. Ironically, you need to teach him to bark on command before learning to be silent on cue. Over this month, he will learn to associate the respective commands with barking and silence. This is quite tricky, but your Lab will eventually get there if you practice and stay consistent. The eighth month is ideal for training your Lab to go to different places upon hearing the command word. Either way, do not overload him with place commands, and stick to no more than two per month. Or you can use the ninth month to teach a cool party trick! After a week, you can remove the treat and teach your Lab to follow your finger. Of course, you will still need to reward him after he follows the command. By the third week, you can cue your doggo to spin and see if he does so without your finger guiding him in a circular motion. It might take an extra week or two, but I recommend this as an addition in the ninth month because it allows you to continue training your pet to learn previous commands better. You can teach him to go to different places, hold or release objects, and fetch toys. You can now progress this further and teach him to roll over on command. Your 1-year-old Labrador only learns to comprehend more at the same pace as he has since the 6-month mark. You should also audit previously taught commands and see any weak associations you can reinforce. How to Train an Month-Old Labrador You will not have to alter your training regimen dramatically if you have trained your Labrador properly from eight weeks onward. If anything, this is the period where you customize his training to your convenience. Now is when your dog must learn to be compatible with your life. From the month mark onwards, you must train your dog to be harmonious with modern adult life within reason. It is sad to see dog owners having to give away their pets because of behavior issues. Such things are avoidable if you train your dog correctly and sufficiently exercise him. It would be best if you simply established authority by having a positive yet commanding presence. Once your dog acknowledges your authority and sees you as a guide, you can merely treat him as a six-month-old, albeit on an accelerated schedule, and train him accordingly. Your job becomes even easier once you have a workable training schedule and stick to your routine. This month-by-month Labrador puppy training schedule will help you successfully train your doggo and turn him into the beloved companion you always desired. Good luck with your training! Socialisation: Lots almost daily of outings to different places rural and urban carried Visits to family and friends. Bite inhibition: Discourage hard biting, allow mouthing. What to expect from your 4 month old puppy Your 4 month old puppy will be pretty much potty trained, but accidents still happen if they are left alone too long. Biting is usually starting to subside now, and many four month old puppies will be able to mouth at your hand without hurting you. At this point I start to discourage all mouthing. I teach every puppy to let me touch her face or approach her with my hand, food, a leash etc while holding eye contact and not grabbing at me, or at what is in my hand. This is the age at which people often start to push forward with training. Your 4 month old puppy is capable of quite a lot. There is nothing wrong with teaching your puppy different cues and even some tricks. I recommend you still avoid long duration activities at this point as they are a common stumbling point with puppies young enough to have a short attention span. A ten second sit is ample. Add mild distractions Recall: Fade additional cues. Begin to whistle the pup and stand still. Add mild distractions. Clicker train to polish this in more mouthy puppies. No commands are needed for this. Gradual introduction of distractions. Advanced puppy training begins in earnest This is where I start a programme of sporting training with my Labs. You can begin raising your standards and expectations, asking for longer and more complex behaviors. Print Preparing for the teething stage If you have been following my puppy training program since the beginning, you will have some down time for the next month or so. This is not to mean that you will not be working with your puppy at all, but only means that you will not be adding any new training. For the next month or two, you should continue working on basic obedience. I will discuss this more later in the post but Here is the training for your 4-month-old Labrador puppy. About this series of posts This is post eight of a step-by-step training and socialization program for Labrador puppies. If you read our first post , you know that this series follows our training of Bubba, a female chocolate lab puppy. Bubba is already sold as one of our Custom Trained Retrievers, so it is our responsibility to raise and train her until she has progressed to the level of training the owner has requested. In this case, Bubba will be with us for almost a year and a half. Bubba Training and socialization for four-month-old Labrador puppy Here are the things we worked on during the past two weeks while training Bubba. Working on self-control and restraint If you have ever been pushed out of the way as your large dog rushes to get outside or inside ahead of you, you know how that feels. It can be downright dangerous, and there is no reason to allow it. You can start eliminating these future problems by spending time now, teaching your 4-month-old puppy to have self-control and restraint. There is a vast array of situations that you can use to teach your puppy self-control. The first and easiest one to teach is sitting before eating. Simply do not give your puppy their food until they SIT calmly. Here are some other opportunities. Sitting before getting a leash on and off Sitting by door, waiting to go outside or inside, until released from SIT Staying in crate or kennel until released, even with door open All these training opportunities work toward the same thing — self-control. There are probably many more situations that would also apply, use your imagination, and teach your puppy to listen and exert restraint in all situations. Bubba has learned all these lessons well. She understands that she must wait for a release command and that if she SITS very still the release comes sooner. Obedience training your 4-month-old puppy We continue to work on obedience training using a chain collar and heeling stick. Bubba has come a long way regarding heeling. She is not perfect, but she does understand the command. However, remote SIT is not going well. Bubba really struggles to SIT still, even for a few seconds. I had to be reminded that Bubba is a chocolate lab. Chocolate labs tend to mature much slower than blacks or yellows, and Bubba is proving that to be true. Given this, Bubba will probably need some more maturity before I can expect too much from her on obedience. Well, let me rephase. Bubba knows the HERE command but still struggles to respond to it consistently. This is a huge source of contention for me, but again, Bubba is a chocolate and is very immature. A halt on retrieving Up until now we have been doing retrieving daily with Bubba, but as she enters the fourth month, we are increasing aware that she will be teething very soon. Because of this, we will be stopping retrieving until we can confirm that all her adult teeth are in. This concerns a lot of owners; they are concerned that their puppy will forget how to retrieve or will stop wanting to retrieve. We have never had this happen. Final thoughts on training for your 4-month-old Labrador puppy As your puppy approaches four months of age, it is good to take a moment to reflect on all the progress you have made in terms of training. These are important steps that will lead your puppy down a path of becoming a happy, healthy family dog and hunting companion. If you are struggling or need additional help with your new puppy, you can email me ottertailkennels gmail. I would be happy to discuss your goals for your retriever and tell you about the programs I offer. Until next time, happy retrieving. Training your 4-month-old Labrador puppy?

Loves to chase his tail and pesky flies, he is a soft-at-heart pup who has a Big character. A change in our circumstances unfortunately means we are unable to keep him although we would most dearly love to. A loving home for him is needed. He's had a health check from the vet and comes from healthy and well-tempered parents. Absolutely loves his food so will be able to train fully. He understands pointing to indicate a direction for him. House trained, microchipped and wormed. He is good at being protective over guarding the household and is not in the slightest territorial over food or toys. He will allow you to take a bone or food off him with ease. He loves to play ball more than anything, and loves walks, long grass, new scents, chewing on moon bones and chicken. This lovely pup needs a sizeable garden and ideally, someone who is used to similar breeds and has time to train him fully. He has great potential. He would be ideal for flyball. He can jump up - he is only a puppy so can be trained - and will certainly grow up into a big, handsome dog. He has excellent parentage. He is a stunning boy and whenever we go out always attracts compliments. A good choice if you're looking for a good-natured furry friend that will be your loyal companion and protector for years to come, He is very loveable characterful boy with a great personality and a goofy soul who just wants to play. Replies to msgs after 7pm .This is Denver who is actually a Scottie. His collar had become embedded in his neck, his body so infected that it stunk and pus excluded from all orifices. He was a stud dog from a puppy farm. He was lucky as he was handed over to a rescue - most aren't they are either shot or hit over the head. Daisy was 4. She lived her life as a tool to make money from. She never knew a home, a special family or a fireside. She had litter after litter, but when her weight dropped, her breathing was laboured, she could have no more pups, she was given to a rescue to home. It was decided immediately that she must see the vet. She sat in the waiting room for her turn to come and was cuddled, probably for the first time in her short life. She went into the vets' room, he listened to her heart, it was laboured, her belly swollen with fluid, all too far gone for help. She sat not able to stand any longer, the decision was made, she gave her paw while being cuddled. The vet nurse found the vein and the vet injected the yellow fluid to send her to sleep forever. Her living hell was over, we can only hope that a better place awaits her. For those people who paid hundreds of pounds for her puppies, they will probably have inherited the same heart condition from their mother and will live very short lives!! This one proved useless for breeding so was dispensed with. She would only crawl on her belly to start with, but now waggy and confident and so gentle. Rotty bitch gone past her sell by date so she was thrown out on the street by the breeder - thin, little coat and eyes that wept with pus. She has now had a successful eye operation that was done to restore her vision and stop the constant infection where her eyelashes grew in and rubbed relentlessly on her eyes. Her hair has grown back, and her loving nature is coming though. Worn out useless boxer unable to raise a litter as no desire to keep on living. This Labrador is just 18 months old though he looks .Poor dog didn't make the grade as a stud dog. He is blind in one eye because the breeders left an ulcer in his eye untreated which burst. He is with kind people who are trying to help him forget the last 18 mths but he is still very traumatised. Time may be a great healer but it won't give him his eyesight back. Some of the saddest dogs are the x puppy farm stud dogs. They have never known the kindness of a home or been for a walk, they do not even have the pleasure of the company of other dogs but live a life of isolation -scared of almost everything. This mastiff has had a rotten life and he will not be easy to rehome as he is so large. Breeding bitches, worn out bodies, no muscle tone and many with large mammary tumours. Living in dirty cells with up to 20 others, no human company or kindness, no playtime or long walks. Many have never seen the light of day. Puppies past their cute stage so dealers won't buy them - what will be their fate?!!!! If you buy a puppy from a dealer or a puppy farm, you may be making a very expensive mistake not to mention encouraging these people to breed more sick, unhealthy puppies. Think of the suffering of these poor helpless dogs. Ahh - the cute little puppy that was advertised for sale in the paper. The implications of not buying from a reputable breeder This is Minnie one of the hundreds of german shepherd puppies for sale in the UK who is just 10 months old and since just a few months old has suffered from severe hip dysplasia which has caused her pain, discomfort and disability. Although a little sweetheart, Minnie is not a great example of the German Shepherd breed being very small and underweight as well as having health problems. She has recently undergone surgery to correct problems with her left hip and at some point in the future, she may require total hip replacement on the right side. Puppies for sale! Think very carefully before deciding to buy that puppy. Why not consider taking a rescue dog instead, most rescues in the UK are full and desperate for kind loving homes. Hundreds of dogs are destroyed every week by the dog pounds because enough homes cannot be found for the increasing number of unwanted and unloved dogs. Much kinder for dogs than encouraging or lining the pockets of those who breed dogs for money with no thought to what they are breeding and little regard to the pain and suffering caused as a result of their greed. If there is no demand, the puppy farmers and irresponsible breeders will be put out of business. If you decide that you would prefer to buy a puppy please note that we are not prepared to recommend breeders but we would give the following advice. The kennel Club will give you a list of breeders on request. However this will not be an indication that these are reputable breeders, it will just be a list of breeders that register puppies with the KC. You should at least be able to see the mother of the puppies. Please note that the conditions in these puppy farms are horrendous with dogs kept in appalling conditions, some never seeing the light of day. Please do not encourage this trade. Parents of the puppies should be hip scored. Reputable breeders will breed with consideration not only for looks but also for good health but most importantly good temperament. When you get your puppy, remember that the German Shepherd is a working breed and will require training and socialisation. It will pay dividends later if you find a good training class for your new puppy. Insure your puppy, veterinary treatment is very expensive. German Shepherd Dog Breeders Think very carefully - the horrors of puppy farming!! We have some lovely older german shepherds looking for homes. Please don't be put off taking an older dog, they are more settled need less exercise and will be loyal companions. Many GSD's now live to 14 years. There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing a breeder, so read on for tips on how to make the best decision for you and your dog. Research: The first step in choosing a German shepherd breeder is to do your research. Once you have a list of potential breeders, narrow it down by doing more research on each one. Find out how long they have been breeding German shepherds, what their breeding practices are, and whether they have any health concerns with their dogs. Health Screenings: A good German shepherd breeder will have their dogs health screened before breeding them. This means that the parents of your puppy will have been checked for common health problems that can affect German shepherds. This is important because it helps to ensure that your puppy will be healthy and free of these conditions. Temperament Testing: A good German shepherd breeder will also temperament test their dogs before breeding them. This means that they will evaluate the dogs to make sure that they are good candidates for breeding. They will check things like how the dog responds to strangers, whether they are aggressive, and how well they socialize with other dogs. German Shepherd dogs are particularly known for their intelligence, courage, and loyalty to their owners. Because of their gorgeous physical features, they are an extremely appealing subject to draw. Thus, it has created a huge demand for a free German Shepherd drawing tutorial. Finally, we present to you—a step-by-step tutorial on how to draw a German Shepherd in a nutshell. This tutorial consists of 9 easy and simple steps that come with visual illustrations. Have fun putting your imaginary pet dog into paper! Step 1 Starting on the upper left portion of your paper, draw a sideways oval shape to outline the head of your German Shepherd. In order to make sure that your German Shepherd will be drawn proportionally, create reference lines by drawing an intersecting horizontal and vertical line across your paper. These lines should divide your paper into four square spaces. The one on the upper left is where you should draw the oval shape. You can structure the body any way you want, and make it as thick or as thin as you want. Afterwards, get rid of the lines overlapping in the legs using an eraser to keep your drawing neat and tidy. Create the hind legs of your dog by drawing a curved line with a folded leg right underneath at the bottom of its body. Bear in mind that since the dog is facing sideways, only one leg is going to be visible. We think a furry tail looks best when drawing a German Shepherd, but feel free to draw the tail any way you like! The standing pointed ears, as seen in the illustration, is actually one of the most distinctive features of a German Shepherd. You can absolutely draw folded ears, droopy ears, or any form of ears you like! Step 8 — Add Patterns and Marks All Over its Coat German Shepherd dogs typically have more than one color, so we will be drawing lines all over its body to help us in coloring its coat later on. Draw another line across the body and the tail, as shown in the illustration. Step 9 — Finish Off by Drawing the Facial Features Finalize your German Shepherd artwork by drawing its eyes, nose, as well as the outline of its inner ear. Next, draw a pair of eyes right below its forehead. Now, complete its facial features by drawing a half upside down triangular shape on its snout to form the nose. This is the part where you can show off your artistic skills and your ability to mix and match various colors. German Shepherd dogs are generally black, grey, or sable in color. There are also some with a combination of the colors black and tan, red and black, and black and silver. This gives you a lot of color options when coloring your drawing. Enjoy coloring your German Shepherd and watch as your drawing ultimately comes to life! Used time and time again as a mascot for sports teams, universities, and even the military, this stout symbol is best known for its smooth, creamy coat. The merle bulldog boasts a wild fur pattern outside the normal expectations of this popular breed. A merle English bulldog is exactly like any other English bulldog, just a different color. Their behavior, temperament, and exercise needs are all the same as classic bulldogs. Merle English bulldogs look like a Jackson Pollock painting. Okay, maybe not that colorful. They do have a very distinct, speckled coat that features various colors usually more than three in an uneven pattern, like sprinkled Dalmatians or cookies and cream icecream. Merle can present itself in a variety of colors. Sometimes there can be patches of tan, even black. Merle effects the pigmentation of the skin and eyes as well. Merle dogs will almost always have blue eyes, but can also have the David Bowie look and have one of each color. The skin on their nose pads are light pink or mottled black and pink, while classic bulldogs always have plain black. Unfortunately, this pretty pattern is not recognized by the AKC. That seems to be why judges are averse to accepting alternate coat colors. A merle English bulldog can be born to any English bulldog, even classic ones, as long as the gene is present in one or both of the parents. The best way to know if a bulldog carries the gene is by genetic testing. Knowing if a dog carries the merle gene is important to breeders. There are different types of merle. Original, basic, by-the-book merle is as we mentioned: an unevenly freckled coat in three or more colors. A dilute merle is one with no dark patches on its coat — no black fur or noses. Cryptic merles — also called ghost merles — are dogs who carry the merle gene but do not express it. This means that they can look like your classic, run-of-the-mill bulldog, but have this mutation hidden in their genes. It may not affect them in any way, but it can be passed down through their offspring. Merlequins canine connoisseurs love a portmanteau are dogs who have patches of merle on their otherwise classic coat. For example, they have white fur that is interrupted by contained speckled patches of black and gray. Double merle dogs MM are a dilemma. A double merle is a dog whose parents both carried the merle gene and inherited a double dose. Double merles are dangerous as they have a greater concentration of the merle gene and are thus are even more likely — in not guaranteed — to suffer from poor health. MM and MM should never be mated together. Neither should MM and Mm or even Mm and Mm, as all these combinations of the merle gene will produce an ill-fated double merle. Mated with a visibly merle bulldog Mm or MM , the odds of their offspring being double merle are pretty high. The risk comes with mating two classic-looking English bulldogs. The two can carry the merle gene without showing it and pass it on. Merle English Bulldogs are pretty rare. One reason for this is because merle is a recessive gene, meaning the odds are stacked against its spreading. Another reason is because of the detrimental side effects that come along with a cool coat. Merle bulldogs are subject to all the usual health issues any classic bulldog can face — and then some. Merle dogs of all breeds are highly likely to have eye and ear deformities. Some exhibit deformed pupils, in which the pupil appears in an irregular, starburst shape. Conditions such as microphthalmia born with one too-small eye and even anophthalmia born with no eye are also possible. Devastatingly, complete blindness and deafness are common, even expected in double merles. Inconclusive studies have hinted at complications in the cardiac, skeletal, and reproductive systems of merle dogs. As previously stated, double merles are much more prone to these problems. It is unlikely that a double merle will suffer no extra ailments in its lifetime. There are definite breeding concerns with merle English bulldogs. Prudent breeders will have their dogs genetically tested, especially if they suspect one may be a ghost merle. Sometimes the gene hides away for generations. Because of this, breeding should always be done carefully. Double merles should never be bred. The safest bet is to have any merle bulldogs Mm or MM spayed and neutered. Already facing criticism for purebreeding, bulldog breeders risk more for purposefully mating merle bulldogs. Adding the potential merle health issues to a breed with already questionable health is suspicious work. For another, sometimes an innocent lack of information or ignorance means that merle dogs are going to happen. They would be putting the future litter at risk. If they then sold those puppies, the future owner would be burdened with the sad responsibility of a bulldog doomed to poor health. Unfair on the owner, but more especially on the dog. You see, many breeders choose these words because they want to mask their unethical breeding practice. No, the Merle English Bulldog is as much a Bulldog as a fawn or a red one. This is a different coat color. Merle is not a separated English Bulldog breed. The Merle pattern presents patchy coloring in a different shade than the base coat. Also, it brings many health problems along the road, but more on that later. These are irregularly-shaped patches of a diluted color. You will recognize merles by their pink skin, blue eyes, and grayish patterns all over their body. Yes, they do look adorable, but at what cost? A merle English Bulldog can come in several types of this pattern. The merle gene is not always visible, meaning the puppies will have it, but the coat color will stay standard as with other Bullies. The three types of merle pattern are: — dilute merle — cryptic merle — Merlequins A dilute merle dog has no dark patches, coat, or nose in black. This is actually a blue merle, and it has no dark shades present. Yes, those are cryptic merles! Lastly, Merlequins are dogs that carry merle patches on their coat in a standard color. But, a lilac tri merle is even rarer! These dogs have gone through dilution twice. The first dilution happens from black to color brown. The second dilution is from black to the color, blue. The end result of these dilutions is a purple-gray shade of coat. Even the eye rims, lips, nose, and paw pads are in purple! Lilac tri merle English Bulldogs have an undercoat. This undercoat is usually in a shade of fawn. Most dogs fashion a lilac white coat with tan points. But, this is not the only special thing about these dogs. In fact, they can also have lovely icy blue eyes. These dogs have a lovely deep brown base coat, with liver or brown eye rims, nose, and pads. You can usually find a chocolate tri merle Bully in choco and white, with tan points. Black tri merle Bullies have a soft, shiny black coat, with an undercoat that comes in fawn. Their markings are also in black. You can spot a black tri merle pup because it usually has a black and white coat, covered in tan points. Blue Tri Merle The blue coat color is actually a diluted black color. What you see is a game of light. For instance, blue tri merles appear gray in direct sunlight. Their paw pads, nose, and eye rims are also gray. Still, merle dogs have been around for many years. It takes at least one merle ancestor in the line for a puppy to turn out as a merle. In fact, no one can! We can only assume that the breeding of this coat color has been around as long as any other English Bully color. Why Is Merle So Undesirable? The merle coat color is so undesirable because puppies carrying it are also carrying numerous defects and health conditions. Even though the merle gene might not be visible, the pups will still be carriers, meaning they will transfer the genes to further offspring. Merle is a result of crossbreeding somewhere in the past. I know the coat color might seem appealing and unique. I consider breeders who breed merle dogs to be very unethical and unreliable. But, this is only my personal opinion. You do as you want. But, wait until you hear about the double merle! A double merle puppy is born when the two M genes get transferred from the parents to the puppy, right? Well, such puppies are a holy mess. The vast majority of double merle English Bulldog puppies are born deaf or blind. Double merle English Bulldogs have a generally poor life quality and a shorter lifespan than other English Bulldogs. You should think through your decision on getting a mere English Bulldog. I mean, is the coat color absolutely worth it? They do not support breeding merles nor buying them. Merle is one of those coat colors. I must agree with them. Merle dogs are, sadly, prone to numerous severe health conditions. Try listing a merle English Bulldog at an official dog show. To understand how merle genes work, you need to have at least some knowledge in dog genetics. But, I will try to bring this matter as close to you as I can. Merle genes are considered to be recessive. If a dog carries even one copy of the M gene, the dog can become a merle. One M and one M will result in a merle dog. Are Merle English Bulldogs Healthy? The English Bulldog breed with merle genes has an increased risk of complicated health problems. This coat pattern brings many conformation defects. But, even without these genes, purebred English Bullies still have many problems with hereditary diseases. This can depend on many factors and could vary based on color variations such as lilac merle, tri merle, etc. In this guide, we cover all Merle English bulldog prices so you can get an idea of how much to pay. How Much is a Merle English Bulldog? What are Merle English Bulldogs? Why are They So Expensive? Merle English Bulldogs have an incompletely dominant M gene which dilutes dark colors. Therefore, these dogs end up with a marbled or mottled appearance wherein there is a true basic color and a paler color in the diluted parts. As mentioned earlier, there are several variations in the merle pattern — so you could have blue merle, lilac merle, tri merle, chocolate merle, etc. Although the AKC does not recognize merle English bulldogs, these dogs are in great demand. The reason why Merle English bulldogs are so expensive is due to their beauty, rarity, and uniqueness. The merle coloring creates random patches and patterns that are unique to each dog. No two merle puppies are the same, even in the same litter. Moreover, merle English bulldogs often have light-colored eyes or blue-grey eyes that make them look gorgeous. Since people want rare and beautiful pets, merle English bulldogs are in high demand. This demand has led breeders to breed specifically for the merle pattern. Many breeders even aim for beautiful merle patterns like red merle, sable merle, lilac merle, etc. Merle-colored English Bulldogs are also rare — as they are not recognized by various kennel clubs and are not allowed to participate in dog shows. Therefore, many English bulldog breeders who breed only show-quality pups refrain from breeding them. There are also some general factors that affect puppy prices: Other Factors Affecting Merle English Bulldog Price Coat Colors As mentioned earlier, merle English bulldogs often come with beautiful color variations in them and these can even cost higher. We will cover the costs of these Merle English Bulldog variations later in this guide. Often they are potty trained, socialized with kids and other dogs, and have even received some basic obedience training. In short: these confident little pups are ready for going to their forever homes. People are willing to pay higher for trained English bulldogs and breeders are more than ready to oblige. Pedigree and Bloodlines Pups with superior bloodlines cost much more than those born to bulldogs who are not registered or champions and title owners. Naturally, merle bulldogs are only born to merle bulldogs but there may be outcrosses too. Do note that merle genetics could result in deaf and blind pups. Ethical breeders may conduct genetic tests and health checks to ensure healthy merle puppies. Breeder Reputation Top breeders often charge a lot more just on the basis of their reputation and popularity. This is because of the fact that they have spent time, money, and effort in breeding unique merle-colored Bulldogs. As stated before, they even conduct health checks on the breeding dogs to rule out vision-and-hearing-related issues in the pups. Let us now discuss the prices of different variations of Merle English bulldogs. You typically will see colors like gold-brown, black, fawn, etc. There may be a marbled or mottled appearance on the back, face, and belly. Sable Merle English Bulldog Price Sable coloring in dogs usually means black color with lighter roots. In some dogs, the sable coloring takes the appearance of brown color. With the merle gene, there is a marbled pattern with brown, light brown, grey, or tan appearance. Chocolate Merle English Bulldog These dogs have a lovely deep brown base coat with a lighter color pattern sprinkled randomly on the back and the paws. The face typically has large patches of white, cream, brown, or black. The belly and chest could have white or tan coloring. The chocolate tri merle coloring is very rare which has increased its demand and, hence, the price. These bulldogs have randomly placed stripes of chocolate brown interrupting the base coat color. It is caused by a recessive gene and breeders breed selectively to get puppies having a purplish sheen on their coats. These dogs often have bluish or grey-blue eyes. Lilac tri merle English bulldog puppies are very much in demand. Some of these dogs have light eyes and sometimes, one eye is dark and the other is light. Blue Merle English Bulldog Price A white base with gray or dark gray mottling can create a bluish appearance resulting in the beautiful blue merle English Bulldog. These beautiful dogs often have the blue merle pattern all over the back and hind legs. The front legs may be solid colored — typically white — and the belly is white as well. There also may be white patches on the face and head. Blue merle bulldogs are rare, so breeders often grab the opportunity to charge higher for them. Blue Tri Merle English Bulldog Price In blue tri-merle English bulldogs, you will see colors like blue, black, brown, white, fawn, grey, and tan. Coat Color. Merle English Bulldogs have a rare coat pattern that features mottled patches of various colors depending on whether they are a blue merle, lilac merle, tri merle or black merle. The merle gene dilutes random sections of the coat to a lighter color whilst leaving patches of their original coat color remaining. It may also affect eye color and skin pigmentation on the nose and paws. Despite the captivating look of a Merle English Bulldog, prospective owners should be aware that they are often a result of poor breeding practices and because of this may suffer from ocular and auditory defects. That is not to say that all Merle English Bulldogs are the result of poor breeding practices or that they will have these health issues but there is a higher risk than an ordinary English Bulldog. They are also not usually accepted by other English Bulldog breed clubs. They are disqualified from registration eligibility because merle is considered to be an undesirable and unrecognized coat color as it does not conform with breed standards. This is mainly because the merle gene does not naturally occur in the lineage and there are many health issues connected to the gene. Merle English Bulldog via roycee. Technically, Merle English Bulldogs are not purebred as the merle gene does not occur naturally for the breed. It was introduced by crossing a merle Great Dane, a breed that naturally carries the merle gene, with an English Bulldog. The merle gene was introduced into the breed many years and generations ago so Merle English Bulldogs only have a very small percentage of Great Dane genes in them and are mainly English Bulldogs. Merle English Bulldogs have been around for over a decade. Are Merle English Bulldogs Rare? The main reason why Merle English Bulldogs are rare is because breeders often avoid breeding the merle coat color. This is because it is much more complex breeding Merle English Bulldogs as breeders have to carefully track lineage to ensure healthy litters. Breeders cannot breed two Merle English Bulldogs together otherwise they will be Double Merles and may suffer from severe ocular defeats and auditory issues. Double Merles also are likely to have no coloring in their fur and often appear completely white. Merle English Bulldogs are so expensive because they are a rare and exotic looking coat color. There is high demand for them and there are not many available. The relatively low supply and high demand is the main reason for their exorbitant prices. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time.

This, combined with their sweet nature, elegant looks, and tiny size makes them a great option as family pets. However, they can live between 12 and 14 years — this makes them a commitment! Some good signs include a list of health tests that can be cross-referenced with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals OFA , willingness to show documentation of all test results, and membership in dog clubs American Kennel Club, United Kennel Club, or Canadian Kennel Club. If you decide to purchase a puppy from a pet store, make sure to check their reviews on Google, Yelp, other directories, and forums. Our list originally included 26 breeders in Florida, but we removed 4 because of bad customer reviews and even several fraud allegations — do everything you can to ensure you are not scammed. When talking to a breeder, do not be afraid to ask questions — check if they test their dogs and keep them current on vaccinations and other treatments. As you may have noticed, many of the breeders on our list require you to fill out an application or questionnaire. Breeders that only care about your ability to pay the full price should be avoided! Remember that not all breeders have available puppies at all times and that it is normal to be placed on a waiting list. Check how many litters they have each year as the American Kennel Club AKC considers 7 or more litters a year to be a high volume breeding — breeders with lots of puppies might not properly raise and socialize each animal. All poodles that are up to 10 inches high at the shoulder are toy poodles — if they are even smaller than that, they are still toy poodles. If visiting in person, check the environment the puppies are raised in — make sure that they are kept in clean areas, there are toys dogs can play with, they have enough room to exercise, there is fresh water available, and that the puppies are clean and well-groomed. After getting a puppy, have a veterinarian inspect it in the first 48 hours. Remember to check with the breeder that the sire and the dam have been tested and found free of specific hereditary health problems, as this increases your chance of getting a healthy puppy. As with any other purchase, before buying a toy poodle, make sure to do a lot of research, do not buy from the first farm you visit, and take each of these points and many others into consideration when choosing your next pet. Summary And there you have it! Before buying the animal, make sure to call and see if the farm currently has puppies available for sale, check the animal in person, and have a veterinarian inspect your animal as soon as you get it. Stay safe from scammers and always request a video call verification before paying for anything. Poodles can be great pets as they are friendly, easy to maintain, cute, smart, and entertaining animals. Remember to take care of your new pet regularly to ensure it lives a long and happy life. Lifespan Sociability In many cases, these dogs are not available from breeders. Some mixed breeds are popular enough to have breeders dedicated to them, but the German Shepherd Terrier is not one of them. Most dogs will come from accidental litters. A German Shepherd will accidentally end up breeding with a terrier, leaving the owner with a bunch of puppies to get rid of. As you might imagine, the puppies will often be extremely inexpensive. You may even be able to get them for free. However, they would not have undergone the genetic testing that breeders put their dogs through. Some backyard breeders produce this mixed breed, and they may be a better option than purchasing a puppy from an accidental litter. However, the quality of these puppies tends to shift a lot. There are few terriers that a German Shepherd can breed with, making accidental litters a bit difficult as well. Jack Russel Terriers are small, energetic dogs bred to hunt small rodents and protect farmland from pests. The American Staffordshire Terrier is a larger dog that was bred to fight other animals. They are largely kept as companion animals today, though they are also one of the few dog breeds that can handle wild boars and similar, dangerous animals. We recommend asking about the specific terrier used to produce the puppy before adopting them. The breed can affect their temperament significantly. In accidental litters, the identity of one parent may not be known. Some terriers are pretty large, which would produce a dog closer to the size of a German Shepherd. They may weigh as little as 20 pounds or as much as 60 pounds. Often, they are at least somewhat protective. Sometimes, they can be extremely protective, while this trait is less pronounced in other instances. Where their protective instincts fall depends on the genetics they inherit from both parents, as well as how they were raised. Dogs that are heavily socialized at a young age can often be friendly or at least not aggressive towards strangers. This canine will likely never be as friendly as a Labrador Retriever. Often, this breed is exceedingly intelligent. This makes them very easy to train. They are often very devoted to their owners and follow commands easily. However, it also means that they need regular mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. Otherwise, they can become bored and destructive. With that said, most terriers are not as intelligent or trainable as a German Shepherd. They are still intelligent dogs. They require lots of mental stimulation and exercise. However, as long as you can meet their needs, these dogs are an excellent option for most experienced dog owners. Just be sure you can dedicate the time their temperament calls for before you adopt a puppy. Most are not scared of kids due to their larger size, especially if they have been socialized with children previously. However, sometimes, German Shepherd Terrier mixes can be pretty small. This weight is plenty small enough for some exuberant children to hurt. If a pound child falls on a pound dog, the dog could easily get hurt. Often, these dogs are great with members of their own family, including children. Be sure to keep this in mind if your child regularly has other kids over. The dog might not like them playing together very much, especially if things get a bit rough. In the end, it can be hit-or-miss with this mixed breed and smaller children. However, they are often great for active families with older kids. If you have small children, you may want to look elsewhere for a more appropriate breed. If you adopt these dogs as adults and know that they are on the larger end of the spectrum, they can be good in households with small children. Their protective instincts can be applied to unfamiliar dogs, especially if they come into their home. However, most are completely fine with dogs they have been raised with. However, it takes socialization to make your German Shepherd Terrier mix accept other dogs. We highly recommend puppy classes at an early age. Group classes are great for training and socialization. In fact, we recommend them primarily because they provide a great socialization opportunity that is safe and controlled. They will chase cats and anything else that they interpret as prey animals. Because this is an innate instinct and not fear-driven, socialization will not help you. They will still see it as something to chase. Feists and Italian Greyhounds helped as well. Considering a Rat Terrier mixed breed is a good idea because they are prone to a few health problems such as hip dysplasia and patellar luxation loose kneecaps Some of these issues may be less prominent and it may elongate their lifespan. Rat Terrier hybrids will do well with ample space to exercise and play along with high-quality dog food for a long, happy, healthy life. The Rat Terrier Chihuahua mix is affectionate, loyal, loves attention, and will make an overall great family dog. This mixed breed will typically have a short coat but could have a longer one from the Chihuahua parent. They get along well with others and are affectionate. However, they do have a strong prey drive, so they may want to chase the cat or other small pets you may have at home. They are curious and could be aloof from their Beagle parent, so training the Beagat Terrier will need to be met with patience. They have high energy levels and will need ample space and plenty of exercise and playtime. Be warned; this pooch has a smooth, double-coat that will shed a lot. Daily brushing to keep the loose hair at bay will be a must. They have a long spinal cord and small rib cage, leaving them pretty fragile. However, the Rat Terrier Dachshund mix is great with kids, energetic, and playful. They love attention but will enjoy some alone time now and then. The Poorat Terrier will get along well with others as long as they are trained and socialized early and well. Regardless of size, this pooch will be low maintenance with grooming. Whippet Rat Terrier mix This friendly and curious pooch will need early training and socialization to get along well with others. Grooming needs will vary, depending on which type of coat they inherit from the parent breeds. This doggo is playful, lively, and will make a great companion. They do love to dig, so be careful of your garden! The Shizurat is also energetic and will need ample exercise and playtime each day. This doggo is friendly and a good companion dog. Australian Shepherds are sweet while Rat Terriers are feisty, so it may be a perfect mix of the two. However, they are also stubborn and may be prone to separation anxiety. This doggo does require minimal grooming, thanks to its short coat. Having them on a leash or letting them romp in a fenced-in yard will be great for them. This crossbreed is also not hypoallergenic and will have moderate grooming needs. Shiba Inu Rat Terrier mix This medium pooch will have a short coat that will need weekly brushing. This Ratshire will have moderate grooming needs with its medium coat. This doggo is intelligent, affectionate, and playful. They may also have a strong prey drive, so early training and socialization will be good for them. This will diminish their high energy level. Depending on the coat it inherits, the Ratsky Terrier may have moderate grooming needs. The Rat Terrier Boston Terrier mix will be a small size, typically a perfect mix of both parent dog breeds. This doggo will need moderate grooming with weekly brushing. This mixed breed is easy to train and loyal. This small to medium-sized pooch will need moderate grooming. Pugs, like Bulldogs, have short noses. This doggo is intelligent, easy to train, energetic, and will be an overall great family pet. They love attention and may cause mischief around the house to get some. The Rat Terrier Cocker Spaniel mix will need a fenced-in yard to let loose and get out some of their energy. Having a hybrid will allow your pooch to have different personality traits and even different grooming needs. You can choose a hybrid that will work well with your family in terms of activity levels, as well. Do you have a Rat Terrier mix at home? Let us know in the comments below! Parson Russell Terrier Fox Terrier Feists readily distinguish themselves from other hunters like hounds as they utilize air and ground scent as well as sight to track their quarry, and they pursue it silently. They often specialize in rodents and hares but are fierce enough to effectively corner larger game like wild pigs. Rat Terriers are treeing feists, meaning they often run animals like squirrels into trees and await their owners. They contributed fierceness and agility to the Bull and Terrier of the time even as they received additional speed from the Whippet and Italian Greyhound and pack social etiquette from the Beagle. Although largely replaced by Bull and Terriers and later Pit Bull Terriers for rat baiting in England, Rat Terriers would prove to have an exceptional affinity for rat control in the US. Rat Terriers suffered a population decline with the arrival of rat and mouse baits and poisons in the s. The terriers would make a comeback in the s, according to Rover. Their popularity was sealed when crosses with Chihuahuas and other Toy breeds increased their appeal as house pets, and their speed earned them a reputation in various competitions like agility and flyball. Your Rat Terrier German Shepherd mix may pick up the following background characteristics from the Terrier side. Very alert and active, high-energy Fast and agile High prey drive — tendency to chase animals who run Intelligent The Rat Terrier Shepherd could inherit several feist-like physical features Erect, button, or folded-tip ears Slender but muscular build — compact with relatively long legs; Beagle lines have shorter legs Short or bobtail Smooth coat with little or no underfur Rat Terriers are about 10 to 18 inches tall and weigh from 10 to 25 pounds with more people seeking dogs under 13 inches at the shoulders. They were traditionally black and tan, but like others in the feist group, they are now often tricolor with large areas of white. Rat terriers can also be calico, bicolor, fawn, chocolate, merle, or sable. Dilute colors like blue and Isabella or Pearl can appear with or without white markings and may also combine with merle. Bicolor dogs are usually black and white or red and white. Sable is similar to the color in Collies where at first glance a Rat Terrier may appear solid brown until you notice the black-tipped hairs or varying tones of red. German Shepherds contribute a background of drive and versatility When you imagine a working GSD you most likely picture a large athletic and beautiful dog with a single-minded purpose and drive. It may shock you that German Shepherds did not always make the best working animals. Max von Stephanitz chose a show dog named Hektor Linksrhein as the founding father of the German Shepherd breed. Hektor, who under von Stephanitz became Horand, embodied the beauty of the herding dog type and could also work in the field. However, many dogs of the Thuringian line were unfocused, unruly, difficult to train, and highly predatory and aggressive, according to Germanwatchdogs. Von Stephanitz brought dogs from the Wurttemberg and Swabian regions of Germany to add stability, size, work ethic, and weather resistance to his sire lines. German Shepherds developed an unparalleled ability to focus on work as well as versatility that made them useful during World War II when many other breeds were in severe decline. Your German Shepherd mix will likely inherit at least a couple of the following attributes from his GSD parent. Intelligence, obedience, and trainability. It's okay if this is an estimation: it is just a starting point. We then factor in your dog's breed composition, information at certain genes that affect size, and their inbreeding coefficient to calculate genetic age. Exercise and diet also play a role in how long your dog will live. Nevertheless, genetic age is the primary risk factor for numerous diseases in dogs, including cancer, kidney disease, osteoarthritis, cataracts, cardiac disease and cognitive decline. If your dog has recent wolf ancestors, you will see that in the breed mix report. Instead, the Wolfiness Score is based on the number of ancient genetic variants your dog has in our unique Wolfiness marker panel. These ancient genes may be a few thousand years old, or may even date back to the original domestication event 15, years ago. They are bits of a wild past that survive in your dog! These markers are thought to be related to "domestication gene sweeps" where early dogs were selected for some trait. For people with puppies, you probably want to know how big of a crate to buy or just how big to expect your dog to become. But genetic weight is also useful for people with fully grown dogs. Just like with people, overweight and obese dogs suffer reduced length and quality of life. They can develop chronic health conditions and suffer from limited mobility and other issues. How do we predict weight? How accurate is the predicted weight? Unlike in people, healthy weight in dogs is controlled largely by only a few genes. However, due to a few as-yet-undiscovered genes and genetic interactions that affect size, this algorithm sometimes misses. Occasionally it misses by a fairly large amount especially when a dog has a breed with an unknown size-influencing gene. This information will inform our ongoing research into the genetics of size and weight in dogs. Because they are inherited whole, your dog and his or her mom share the exact same maternal haplotype. Because most breeds were started with only a few individual dogs, many breeds are dominated by only one or a few haplotypes. These groups all originally descend from one male or female wolf, usually one that lived tens of thousands of years ago. Because they are inherited whole and not shuffled like other DNA, they can be used to trace the ancestral routes that dogs took around the globe en route to your home. Only male dogs have paternal haplogroups because they are determined by the Y chromosome, which only male dogs have. How are Max's ancestors represented in her DNA? All dogs are related and share some DNA. Siblings share lots of their DNA half of it in fact , cousins share a bit less an eighth , and so on. Because dog breeds are made up of a closed group of dogs, all dogs in that breed share a lot of their DNA, typically about as much as second cousins, though it varies by breed. Different breeds that are closely related share somewhat less DNA, and dogs from very different breeds share even less DNA but still much more DNA than either dog shares with a cat. DNA is inherited in pieces, called chromosomes, that are passed along from parent to offspring. Each generation, these chromosomes are broken up and shuffled a bit in a process known as recombination. So, the length of the segments your dog shares with her ancestors decreases with each generation above her: she shares longer segments with her mom than her grandma, longer segments with her grandma than her great-grandma, and so on. How does Embark know which breeds are in Max? We can use the length of segments Max shares with our reference dogs to see how many generations it has been since they last shared an ancestor. Long segments of DNA that are identical to known purebred dogs tell Embark's scientists that Max has, without a doubt, a relative from that breed. By testing over , genetic markers, we build up her genes one DNA segment at a time, to learn the ancestry with great certainty. Other dog DNA tests look at many fewer genetic markers and have to take a guess at breed ancestry based on that. What does this mean for Max's looks and behavior? The exact similarity depends on which parts of DNA Max shares with each breed. Embark will tell you even more about Max's traits soon! In these rare cases we contact the owner to find out more and let them know about their unique dog before they get their results. With this in-depth detective work, we are pushing science forward by identifying genetically unique groups of dogs. Still have questions?
