A kennel should be more like a bedroom for your dog than a prison cell. Here are some tips for crate training a Goldendoodle: Buy the right crate. A crate should be large enough for your Goldendoodle to stand up, lie down, and turn around. Some large crates come with a divider, which allows you to make it smaller for your puppy and bigger when they grow. Feed your puppy in their crate. You want your puppy to associate the kennel with good things, like food. Your puppy should have a positive association with the crate. Line the bottom of the crate with old towels. Provide special treats in the crate. Take your puppy out of the crate often for potty breaks. At most, your puppy can hold their bladder for one hour per month of their age plus one. That means your 2-month-old puppy that you just brought home needs to go out at least every 3 hours, even at night. Slowly increase the length of time your puppy stays in the crate. However, you should gradually increase how long your puppy spends in the crate every day. Start with just minutes at a time and build up from there rather than throwing them straight into 8 hours alone in the kennel. Be patient. Potty training and crate training can both take up to 6 months or longer before your puppy is finally able to hold their bladder for long periods and be comfortable in the kennel without crying. Obedience Training Your Goldendoodle Luckily, Goldendoodle puppies generally do well with obedience training thanks to their intelligence and desire to please. If the puppy moves, start over again. Reward staying immediately with treats and praise. Final Thoughts Goldendoodles are amazing dogs who are relatively easy to potty train. Also, keep in mind that your puppy has a tiny bladder and that Mini and Toy Goldendoodles may have more difficulty holding their bladder since they have smaller bladders than Standard Goldendoodles. If your puppy has an accident because you waited too long to take them outside, the fault lies with you, not them. Our method of potty training a mini goldendoodle is pretty simple. When you get your mini goldendoodle puppy home, take your puppy straight to the grass to go pee. Then, let your mini goldendoodle have some supervised playtime on a waterproof floor for about 45 minutes until they get tired. We keep our crate in the kitchen area or where we work and stay to keep them close and let them settle. Most puppies will go to sleep in their crate shortly after you put them in. Let your puppy sleep for about an hour to hour and half. Then, they wake puppy up, and go outside to potty. Repeat this pattern throughout the daytime. At night, we usually sleep with our new puppies between us and our pillows the first 3 nights. The puppies are used to sleeping in a pile of puppies that are warm and alive. Mini Goldendoodles can usually hold urine 6 hours, so if your late night potty is at 11, they can sleep until 5 and then be taken out again, then put back to sleep with you. Our minis are usually sleeping through the night within a week of being home. After 3 nights of being in bed with us a consistent daytime crate training, our puppies usually are pretty acclimated to sleeping their naps in their crates. So, when it comes to bedtime day 4, they are happy to go to sleep in their crate from here on out! It has worked for us like a charm for a long time. As long as you are consistent during the daytime. However, we know that any dog has to be re-potty trained to some point when entering new territory, especially homes. We see this with our Guardian dogs. I am now not surprised at all. You will need to use the crate training and not allow your mini Goldendoodle puppy free roam until they are trustworthy. Do not trust them until they are trustworthy. But when they are puppies gently tell them a firm no, and put them on the grass outside to show them physically that they have done something wrong and what to do next time. Then, after cleaning it up, explain that that was wrong to do but then tell them how much you love them. Mini Goldendoodles deserve clear communication and a loving home. Ranger, an adorable five-year old German Shepherd born with dwarfism, is fated to stay puppy-sized forever. Owned by Shelby Mayo from Phoenix, Arizona, the special German shepherd has a permanently small stature caused by a rare genetic disorder known as pituitary dwarfism. When Ranger was born, Mayo considered the pup the runt of the litter, and would eventually catch up to his siblings in size. She had no idea that the purebred German shepherd would stay small forever. He lost his appetite, started to lose weight, lost almost all of his fur and had extremely dry and flaky skin. The doctor placed him on levothyroxine and he was bathed with a special soap that allowed his fur to grow back and prevented dryness of the skin. Ranger According to studies made by Utrecht University in the Netherlands, pituitary dwarfism is associated with growth hormone deficiency, and is a recessively inherited disorder in shepherd dogs. Pituitary dwarfism is a serious illness and dogs are likely to suffer from a range of illnesses, including various developmental impediments, behavioral problems, and a compromised immune system. NEW Ranger Without proper treatment, they are not expected to live beyond four to five years old. However, pituitary dwarfism is easily preventable and a number of treatments are available for dogs with the condition. Mayo has chronicled Ranger on Instagram and he has thousands of followers, from whom he gets a lot of support. Fortunately, he has a caring family who is ready to face his battles with dwarfism with him. Usually a German Shepherd's early growth is rapid, and before you can blink, they're huge — but not Ranger. The pup, who has his own Instagram account with an impressive , followers and counting, has big paws but a small to medium-size body as a result of pituitary dwarfism — which is associated with a growth hormone deficiency — unlike a typical full-grown German Shepherd. Ranger's pituitary dwarfism is — his owners believe — a result of an infection he had as a puppy, caused by a parasite. Unfortunately, those dogs with pituitary dwarfism are expected to have a shorter lifespan and the possibility of various health issues — luckily for Ranger, his fur parents say that he's a very healthy pup, aside from dry skin causing some fur loss likely due to his pituitary dwarfism and hormones his body isn't making. Additionally, he takes medication to regulate his thyroid. Ranger's owners are grateful to the Instagram community for giving them a platform to share Ranger's unique issues that have in turn been able to help other animal owners who have pets with pituitary dwarfism. Temperament: Friendly, stubborn and playful. Pugs are known for their wrinkly squished face, curled tail and sturdy body. Shih Tzus tend to look very different. They are often shorter, with wide bodies and longer fur. They also possess a squished face, but it is not wrinkly like that of the Pug. Expect your mix to have a sturdy body with long legs, and the smushed face of a Shih Tzu. Their tail can be either curly or straight, but tends to curve over their backs. Coat and Colors The Pug Shih Tzu mix comes in a range of different colors, including black, white, fawn, brindle and brown. Brown and brindle tend to be the most common, and white markings are very common with these dogs. Their coat is long and will need regular trimming as it does continue to grow. It is straight in texture and soft to the touch — this means that it is prone to tangling, so daily brushing is a must for this breed. Height and Weight These dogs tend to be on the sturdier side, weighing between pounds and ranging in height from inches. However just like most mixed breeds, their size can vary and can occasionally be out of these ranges. Known for their love of children, these dogs make a great choice for families with young kids. Pug Shih Tzu mixes are perfect for apartment living. They do not tolerate the heat very well. Both parent breeds are ancient breeds that are over years old. Shih Tzus are known for being confident and hard headed, whilst Pugs are known for their easy going, good natured temperament. As a result the Pug Shih Tzu mix is known for having a well balanced temperament and gets along well with everyone and everything. They little dogs just love to play especially with you , so make sure that you set aside time each day to play games with them. Also make sure to provide plenty of toys for them — tugs, squeaky toys and balls tend to be some of their favorites. A quick walk around the block with some play time in the backyard or even inside is enough for this dog. More than anything the Pug Shih Tzu mix is a couch potato and just wants to cuddle with you on the couch. They love to be with their owners so much they suffer from separation anxiety. So if you are going to be away for long hours, having someone stop by to take them for a walk can help to curb the anxiety. One of the downsides is this breed can be very headstrong which can make training difficult more on this later. The good news though is they are not big barkers. They will bark to alert to someone at the door or something out of place, but other than that they tend to be very quiet. This makes them a great option for apartment living. The Pug Shih Tzu mix makes an amazing family dog. They love to play with children and get very excited, just make sure they play gently! They do not require a lot of physical or mental stimulation and do well in most homes. This breed is also excellent for first time dog owners, or even families with children. The biggest care commitment with this dog is their grooming and maintenance. Exercise Requirements A short walk around the block with a few minutes of play at home is plenty for this breed. In general the Pug Shih Tzu mix is a fairly lazy breed, so you do not have to put a lot of running or walking time into them. If you are looking for a hiking companion, this is not the dog for you. This breed should always be walked on leash or in a fenced-in area. These dogs have a tendency to wander and are not very good with recalls, so keeping them on a leash is best for their safety. Number of Walks Per Day: 1. Total Exercise Needed Per Day: 30 minutes. Grooming and Shedding The most intensive part of caring for a Pug-Zu is the grooming. Although the Shih Tzu is considered hypoallergenic, this trait does not always carry over into the Shih Tzu Pug mix. Daily brushing is needed to prevent their coat from tangles. Your dog will need to visit the groomer about every six weeks for a trim. Keep baths to a minimum as this can dry their skin out. Small dogs are also prone to dental issues, so make sure their teeth are brushed one to two times a week. Another thing that you will need to do is clean out their ears weekly to avoid infection. With little planning ahead you could get reimbursed for every vet bill from now on! Feeding and Diet This mix should be fed kibble specifically designed for small dogs — they do not need anything super high in protein. As a puppy it is best to feed them three times a day. Once fully grown switching to two meals a day will work. Remember these dogs are prone to obesity, so make sure not to free fed them or give them lots of of snacks.
