My involvement in boxers stems back to my childhood days where I have been brought up with dogs which took me along the journey to my first encounter with this beautiful breed. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. Bernedoodle Wavy Coat The primary concerns for any dog breeder must be health, temperament and conformation; but who can deny that the outward appearance of a Bernedoodle pulls at our heartstrings! With careful breeding, breeders can now produce litters with predictable coat types and shedding propensities. One of the things that many people find attractive about the Bernedoodle is the low shedding and hypo-allergenic qualities of the coat, and the adorable ragamuffin look of the Bernedoodle. IC affected Bernedoodle Bernedoodles can have straight, wavy, or curly coats. Furnishings are the longer facial hair, including eyebrows, mustache and beard, found on most Bernedoodles. There is another term to describe the lack of furnishings: incorrect coat. The gene responsible for furnishings is dominant; so by testing the parent dogs DNA, it can be determined if a breed pair will produce puppies that all have furnishings, or if there will be some puppies with an incorrect or Bernese like coat. Dogs with furnishings are lower shedding than dogs without furnishings. If you have a family with allergies, a Bernedoodle with an incorrect coat is not the best match for you. By testing the parent dogs of Multigen Bernedoodles, your breeder can be sure not to breed parents that will produce puppies with incorrect coats without furnishings unintentionally. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with flat coat Bernedoodles, puppies with curly coats tend to be more popular. Many people want the appearance and personality traits of a Bernese Mountain Dog with the allergy-friendly coat of the Poodle. As such, breeders typically strive for their puppies to inherit a curly coat. What is the Bernedoodle coat Like? Every Bernedoodle coat is different. The curlier the coat the less it will shed. The straighter the coat the more it will shed. Most Bernedoodles have the wavy hair coat that is low to no shed hair type. Most people with allergies are ok with this hair type. Bernedoodles with a more curly coat are more like the poodle and will not shed. It is very rare to have a bernedoodle with straight hair. Brushing your Bernedoodle twice a week will make shedding less noticeable. Bernedoodles need to be brushed at least once a week to prevent mating. It is necessary to have your Bernedoodle clipped every few months, you can do this yourself or have a professional do it. What size is a Bernedoodle? Bernedoodles come in different sizes just like the poodle. They come in standard, mini, and micro mini. Standard: These range in size from pounds inches at the shoulder. The reason for this huge range is because standard poodles range in size tremendously. I have had standard Bernedoodle adult weight only 45 pounds, but that is uncommon. An experienced breeder should be able to tell you within about pounds how big your puppy will be. In some occasions it is impossible to know. Mini: These range in size from pounds and inches at the shoulder. Micro Mini: These range in size from pounds. What Colors do Bernedoodles Come In? If you want to know how long a Bernedoodle lives, first it is interesting to know that Bernedoodles tend to be healthier than their parents' breeds. The Standard Bernedoodle live years. The Mini Bernedoodle lives years. The Micro Mini Bernedoodle live years. We are all about genetic testing and choosing the right parents. As they can be prone to hip, elbow dysplasia and eye problems. Just like most other breeds they can get cancer. Genetic testing can reduce the health concerns for Bernedoodles. Standard Poodles need to be tested for Hips, Eyes, Thyroid, and heart. Mini Poodles need to be tested in Eyes, Hips, and Vwd. What's the difference between furnished and unfurnished? The term "Furnishings" refers to the long hair on the extremities of the dog including the head and tail. When our Bernese is crossed with a Poodle the resulting dog is furnished. If one of our Bernese is crossed with certain bernedoodles, the result is unfurnished. We've had many families specifically ask for an unfurnished bernedoodle. Some families don't like the beard of the furnished bernedoodle or they love the bernese look, but like the bernedoodle temperament more. Coat types can be split into 4 separate categories: CURLY COAT Curly coated Bernedoodles are the highest maintenance of the 4 types, but this coat type is the best option for people with moderate allergies due to the lack of shedding. Curly coats are still very plush, and it looks absolutely adorable.Usually we will see curly puppies in F1b generations and onwards, but sometimes we get curly F1s as well. These puppies are much less likely to shed than a straight coat or unfurnished, but are recommended for people with minor or no allergies as shedding amount can not be guaranteed. It is still important to take the unpredictability into account when choosing your puppy if you are prone to reacting to dogs. Please also take into consideration and research whether you are sensitive to dog saliva as well, which will cause reactions regardless of coat type! Generally between 6 months to 1 year is when the most drastic coat changes are seen. These puppies generally shed lightly to moderately, so they are not recommended for people with allergies. They are less likely to knot and mat compared to a wavy or curly coated puppy. Daily brushing is still recommended! These Bernedoodles are uniquely gorgeous in their own way, and typically keep their coat colours into adulthood better than furnished puppies. I often have customers requesting a specific generation for no real reason other than they felt that is the generation that they want based on reading information that is not well researched. Instead, I ask them to refocus on the coat type, color, and size that they are looking for. There is no reason to focus on a specific generation if you are simply looking for a healthy and attractive pet. I have been breeding Bernedoodles for about 6 years and I have noticed no difference at all in the health of any different generation of Bernedoodle. There is no evidence that a specific generation of the Bernedoodle will affect the health of the puppy. Any of our Bernedoodles regardless of generation has been bred for the three things we focus on: temperament, beauty, and health. Of course, mother nature is a brutal force and things can go wrong even with the best planning but I can count on one hand how many major health issues I have had as a breeder. It is a combination of both an art and a science and we employ both tactics to reduce risk when we can. Genetic screening in combination with pedigree matching is the method we use to produce healthy puppies. Since the Bernedoodle is a breed in development there is not a lot of long term data regarding the longevity but based on what we know about the Bernese Mountain Dog, Poodles, and overall longevity based on size, it will likely be that a smaller sized Bernedoodle will live longer than a larger Bernedoodle. One more thing I will mention- Bernedoodle Generation and Allergy friendliness are not really correlated. A person can be allergic to either saliva or dander and if you are allergic to saliva you will be allergic to any and all Bernedoodles, Poodles, etc. If you are allergic to dander a Bernedoodle with the appropriate coat type will likely work for you. Before reading through the following description of coat types, I will say most Bernedoodle coats other than the Bernese Coat we have experience with have very little to no shedding. That being said we have almost never seen a curly-coated Bernedoodle shed. Bernedoodle coat types: There are four main coat types that a Bernedoodle can have: Straight: This is a coat type only achieved in Bernedoodle-to-Bernese or Bernedoodle-to-Bernedoodle breedings. While these dogs have a fluffy look, still they have the least amount of curl to their hair compared to the other coat types. Visually, they have a loose wave. We see this coat type very often in our Ultra Bernedoodles. Wavy: This is the traditional coat type of most F1 Bernedoodles that is not super curly but also not straight either. Wavy-coated dogs require brushing and grooming on a regular basis. Curly: This is the coat type that is most similar to that of a purebred poodle. These dogs rarely shed and often are the most suitable for those worried about loose hair. Curly coated dogs are the highest maintenance of all of the traditional Bernedoodle coats and will require more frequent bathing and grooming. Bernese Coat: This coat type is a throwback to the purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and often times exhibits the same level of shedding as well. This coat type appeals to people that are interested in health benefits and possibly decreased size of a Bernedoodle but do not want the maintenance of a doodle coat.
