Your dog will rarely say no to a treat, and if they do it may be a sign that they are unwell. German Shepherds are known to be predisposed to joint issues such as hip dysplasia, so keeping your German Shepherd at a healthy weight is important. Why are we using treats? Entertainment and motivation during a trening session are the most common reasons for giving a treat. Treats can be very motivating during training sessions, particularly because German Shepherds are so smart, they notice if there is no treat and can decide to stop listening. If using treats for training, you want to choose small, low-calorie treats that your dog enjoys eating. Treats can also have health benefits, such as dental chews. Dental treats that are VOHC certified are beneficial in reducing the rate of dental tartar buildup and can be used as part of a healthy diet to maintain good oral hygiene. Entertainment is another common reason for giving a treat, for example, if you need to go out and your dog will be left alone for a few hours, having a chew can keep your dog busy until you return. We strongly suggest against chews such as raw hides or pig ears as whilst cheap, can cause problems such as blockages in the intestines and tummy upsets. A chew toy smothered in peanut butter xylitol free or a thin layer of cream cheese would be a perfect alternative if looking for a homemade chew toy. Homemade vs store bought When making dog treats at home, you can control portion size and use flavors that your dog loves. These markings are found over the eyes, on the sides of the face, on the chest, on all four legs and feet, and under the tail. There is no white on the puppy or the white is very minimal. Unlike a phantom puppy, there is white present somewhere on the puppy. It is most common to only have white on the chest and sometimes the feet. These puppies most closely resemble a bernese mountain dog in their color patterns. It is more rare to get the white on the face with perfect berner markings, so please understand if leaving a deposit, you could be waiting a very long time for a puppy like this. The two non-traditional tri-colors we produce are sables and brindles. A sable is when the outer hair is a darker shade than the hair underneath. These puppies are a different color when they are shaved down. They commonly have places where their hair tends to stay darker like on the ears or tail. They may or may not have phantom markings and can have varying amounts of white. Brindle is when the puppy has stripes of different colors on their body. If all these colors werent confusing enough as it is, you can also have a sable brindle combination where the puppy has the stripes, but the hair underneath is still lighter too. These puppies will have varying sizes of patches. Several colors of hair create the "blue" and "red" color that these babies are known for. One puppy could appear to be several colors as its base coat. No two babies are ever the same!!! The phantom merles have those distinct phantom markings that we love so much! On average, these babies will appear to be three or more colors! These babies have large patches of distinct white, not just small spots of white hair mixed in which is common in merles. These puppies can appear to be five or more colors. The are the most unique color out there and are something extra special!!! A little about merles: Standard sized merle bernedoodles are especially hard to find. They are one of the few colors that are auctually harder to find in Standard size than mini. The reason being that standard sized merle standard poodles are difficult to find. The merle color is very uncommon in all poodle sizes. They can usually be readily found in toy and mini sized poodles. The toy poodle is then bred to a standard sized female to create the Moyen or medium sized poodle. This poodle as the mother cannot safely be bred to a bernese mountain dog. She will be far too small. If this moyen poodle is the father, the puppies will be a larger mini or very small standard size. These are not Large standard sized puppies that we are hoping to have. This merle moyen poodle should be bred again to a standard poodle in order to bring as much size as possible to the offspring, and then that puppy could safely breed for standard sized puppies. It takes several generations to safely and correctly breed for True Standard sized babies. It takes many years to create the perfect poodle to make these babies happen! We maintain the right to refuse sale to anyone we do not feel comfortable placing a puppy with for any reason. This right also extends to people who have already left a deposit with us, in which this is the only case that a deposit will be refunded. Articles In the world of designer doggies, we hear about unusual mixes every day. One of the unlikeliest of pairings that actually works really well is that Bulldog Shih Tzu mix. The fact that these two purebred parents are so physically different creates many different options of what the resulting mix will end up looking like. The differing personalities also make it difficult to always accurately predict the temperament of the Bulldog Shih Tzu mix. However, in the sections below we shall go through some of these likely outcomes in terms of personality traits, physical appearance, and care needs for a Bulldog Shih Tzu mix. That way, you will at least have an idea of what you are in for with these doggies. The combination of Bulldogs and Shih Tzus makes for a very unpredictable mixed doggy. This is because the two dogs are very different in terms of their physical characteristics. The Bulldog Shih Tzu mix is sometimes referred to as a Bull Shih and will usually result in a dog that takes dominant traits from either parent. Here is a look at some of these possible physical features that your Bull Shih mix may have. In terms of height, the Bull Shih also falls between both parents averaging 10 to 14 inches in height. The colors vary greatly with some of the common being red, white, fawn, brown, and black. These are often in pairs with a combination of white and a dark color. However, the Bulldog has a more exaggeratedly flat face which the Bull Shih may or may not end up inheriting. Both purebred parents have droopy ears which may either be short in the case of the Bulldog or a bit larger and longer for the Shih Tzu. The Bull Shih could inherit either of these ear types. On average, a Bulldog Shih Tzu can live for 10 to 18 years. For some perspective, Bulldogs usually live for 8 to 10 years while Shih Tzus can live for up to 18 years as they are generally healthier. As a mixed-breed dog, the Bulldog Shih Tzu is typically healthier than either purebred parent. However, there are some common health issues that you may have to look out for. Here are 5 of the most important of these. Airway Obstruction Airway obstruction is common in Bulldog Shih Tzus that inherit the brachycephalic features of the Bulldog breed. The obstruction and difficulty breathing are worst when the dog is active and in hot weather. Obesity The Bulldog Shih Tzu mix is prone to developing obesity. This is as a result of a combination of genetics, their exercise restrictions imposed for their safety, and their very large appetite. A healthy and balanced diet is the best way to prevent this condition. This exposes them to trauma as well as dryness and irritation of the cornea. Furthermore, the Bulldog Shih Tzu mix is also likely to develop eye conditions like cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy that are both marked by progressive worsening of vision. Intervertebral Disc Disease Intervertebral disc disease is a degenerative condition that affects the cartilaginous discs in the spinal column. Their progressive wearing down results in compression of nerves which could have all sorts of consequences from chronic pain to reduced limb functionality. Image from Instagram: lady. Frankly speaking, Bulldog Shih Tzu mixes are somewhat high maintenance. This is largely due to the fact that their build and potential features like the brachycephalic head structure makes them prone to several health issues. This means that you have your work cut out for you as far as taking good care of these doggies goes. Fortunately, taking care of a Bulldog Shih Tzu mix can be relatively easy especially if you know what you are doing. Here are a few pointers to get you on the right track when it comes to basic care of a Bulldog Shih Tzu mixed breed dog. However, too much exercise is bad for the dogs as they easily run out of breath and are not always efficient when it comes to dealing with heat. This means feeding your pooch high quality dog food in appropriate amounts of about 1 to 2 cups every day. For quality and balance, we recommend Pet Plate as they use vet approved recipes with real ingredients. Finally, top this diet off with some multivitamin supplements to ensure that your Bulldog Shih Tzu doggy has a truly balanced diet. Regular Grooming Regular grooming will not only help keep your Bulldog Shih Tzu looking clean and smelling fresh but it will also help prevent health issues like skin, dental, and ear infections. Also make sure to clean their eyes every day and their ears every week or two. Shih Tzus on the other hand are spunky little doggies that love attention and affection. The Bulldog Shih Tzu mix takes after the best and some of the not-so-desirable personality traits from both parents. Calm Bulldog Shih Tzu mixes take after their Bulldog parents in terms of their docile and laid-back nature. They are also very gentle which makes them great dogs for homes with children. Playful Bulldog Shih Tzu mixes love to have fun and can be very goofy. They are fantastic companions and will ensure that you never feel bored or lonely. Loyal The kind of bond that Bulldog Shih Tzu mixes have with their owners and other human friends is unlike anything that you will see with most dogs out there. They remain loyal for life which is probably why they are so popular. Affectionate Bulldog Shih Tzu mixes are very good at showing their love for their human companions. These affectionate dogs will cuddle all your worries away and love nothing more than playing the lapdog role. Active For the most part, Bulldog Shih Tzus are not the most athletic of dog breeds. However, they are quite active and lively which is a part of their goofy charm. They also have a lazy, couch potato side which you should discourage to avoid health issues like obesity. The outcome depends on which coat type they take after. Those that take after the long and silky coat of a Shih Tzu are hypoallergenic and shed very little. Here are the 3 most important steps in coat care for these mixed doggies. Brush 2 To 3 Times A Week Whether or not your Bulldog Shih Tzu mix is hypoallergenic, you have to brush their fur regularly to get rid of any loose fur. This practice also helps with detangling especially with long-haired Bulldog Shih Tzu mixed dogs. We recommend you try the Furminator Undercoat Tool that will work on any of the two coat type options on a Bulldog Shih Tzu mix. Removes loose hair: reaches through the topcoat to remove loose undercoat hair without cutting skin or damaging the.FURejector button: just push the button to release hair with ease. This shampoo is particularly useful for Bulldog Shih Tzu mixes that are prone to skin irritation as the oatmeal helps soothe the skin and promote healing. Trimming helps to keep the coat manageable both for you and the pooch. It also helps minimize infections both on the skin and especially in the ears. In addition to the rarity of the Shih Tzu, the Bulldog Shih Tzu mix is sometimes expensive due to their popularity as companion pets and family dogs. If the Bulldog Shih Tzu mix is more like the Shih Tzu, they will love swimming and will be instinctively comfortable in water. Purebred Bulldogs and Shih Tzus tend to get along. Both are even-tempered and tolerant dog breeds that generally coexist peacefully with other pets. However, to be on the safe side, it is best to start socialization training for both dogs at an early age to make sure that they are truly comfortable around other dogs. An ideal companion dog The French Bull Tzu is an ideal choice for people who live in a city apartment or elderly owners who want a loving lap dog. Great around children— wonderful family dogs French Bull Tzus can be trusted around young children which makes them a popular choice for a family pet. The cutest features from both breeds Their shaggy coats, slightly flattened faces, and playful temperament all perfectly complement their clownishly adorable antics. Loved by the royals These companion dogs soon became a favorite pet among the royal families which gave them a very special place in Chinese culture. In fact, Shih Tzus were considered to be so precious that the Chinese refused to trade or sell them with traders from abroad for generations! Came to Europe in the s However, eventually, the breed was exported and they made their first appearance in Europe in the s. Bred to be a mild-mannered companion dog, the French Bulldog was hugely popular with the wealthy and elite of France. They come in a variety of colors Their coats are usually black, white, red, brown, or mixes of these colors. Some look more like a Frenchie— others more like a Shih Tzu Sometimes they can look just like a French Bulldog but with longer fur whereas in other cases they are much slimmer with a more pronounced muzzle. However, in spite of their hybrid vigor, French Bull Tzus can still be susceptible to some of the health conditions that are prevalent in their parental genetic heritage. Test for Health Issues. They are loving and loyal dogs and like to be with humans who match their energy, which is why the Bulldog Shih Tzu is the perfect companion for a child. If this dog breed is not trained properly on how to act around people or children, it has been known to nip or playbite at times, which must be corrected. Bulldogs are aggressive but can learn to be loving and friendlier with proper training. This dog is an ideal family pet and will suit families with small children. It also suits older people as it does not require much maintenance. A loyal breed will always want to be by your side. However, the Bullshih can have separation anxiety tendencies which is something to keep in mind. Shih Tzu Bulldog Size The Bulldog Shih Tzu mix is considered a toy dog and does not grow to be big, weighing lbs with an average height of about inches. Bulldog Shih Tzu Health Problems There are no known health conditions of the Bulldog Shih Tzu mix; however, both the Bulldog and the Shih Tzu are short-nosed dogs and are prone to breathing difficulties, which could also be passed on to the mixed breed. Brachycephalic Syndrome — I talked about this above as both of these parent breeds do struggle with the difficulty of breathing sometimes. This is the narrowing of the breathing passageways. Most likely, your dog will inherit this condition. Eye Issues — Sometimes, this breed has protruding eyes, which can cause vision issues or even eye disease in long-term health cases. Obesity — Another issue this breed faces is obesity. This breed could eat and eat if you allow them, so it is very important to feed your dog the recommended daily food limit. Dental Issues — The Shih Tzu can develop dental issues. Allergies — Allergies can be very common with a variety of dog breeds. The Bulldog can have sensitive skin, leading to certain product allergies. You can ask any of the concerning questions you may have. When they are combined together, your dog will have a good range life span between 10 to 18 years. Of course, you can always ask your veterinarian for guidance if needed. Living Conditions This is an ideal dog for an apartment as it is small and clean. This dog does not do very well with extreme heat, and if owners live in a hot country, keeping the dog in a place where the temperature is favorable is recommended. This goes hand in hand with the weather as well. Bulldog Shih Tzu Exercise Even though this is a small dog, it does need to be exercised daily. It enjoys running , and because it learns quickly, you could exercise it by playing a game of fetch. These dogs are prone to putting on weight easily as the Bulldog is known to eat non-stop. That is why you need to get your dog outside for at least thirty minutes to get moving. As mentioned above, watch out for extreme heat or cold when exercising. This can exert your dog and cause breathing issues. There are a lot of great playtimes and exercises your Bulldog Shih Tzu mix can do without getting too tired. Shih Tzu Bulldog Mix Feeding Since the Shih Tzu Bulldog mix tends to have flat faces, it can be difficult for your dog to pick up its food when eating. However, triangle-shaped dog food is much easier for your dog to pick up. This mixed dog breed is also prone to obesity, so you must ensure you are only feeding your dog the required amount and not overfeeding your dog. The best way to know how much your dog needs to eat is based on its weight. For example, the Shih Tzu Bulldog mix is estimated to need one cup of high-quality dog food broken up into smaller meals throughout the day. It is also very important to feed your dog a great balance of protein , carbs, fats, fruits, and vegetables. Many owners make their own homemade dog food, and many more holistic dog food brands out there strive to make extremely healthy foods for dogs. Shih Tzu Bulldog Mix Grooming This medium-haired dog is easy to maintain and must be brushed thrice weekly to keep its coat shiny and tangy-free. It is also recommended to feed this dog a hard-boiled egg once every two weeks as it is said to help keep their coat healthy. If your dog takes on more traits of the Shih Tzu parent, you will need some sort of dog detangler to help get out mats, knots, and tangles easier. It will need to be brushed more often if it is longer. As always, check out for signs of skin irritation when bathing your dog. The Bulldog dog breed is known for having sensitive skin. Only use dog safety-approved shampoos and watch out for skin irritation. Periodically check over the ear to ensure they are infection free and clip the nails when needed. Bulldog Shih Tzu Training When you are training any dog breed, you need to start when your dog is a puppy. Start with simple things such as potty training, socialization, and being friendly with people and other animals. Remember, when you are training your dog, you reward your dog with treats and positive praise. Training may take some time, so be patient with your dog. Your dog may be quite stubborn if it has more traits from the Shih Tzu parent. Training may take some time, but it is important to continue. Try not to get discouraged and have patience when training. You can always take your Bullshih to a professional trainer if it becomes overwhelming. Shih Tzu Bulldog Mix Puppies When you are first looking for a Shih Tzu Bulldog Mix puppy, it can be challenging to find a reputable and responsible breeder that breeds these two together. Stay away from puppy mills that sell puppies that may not have the best health as you would get from a breeder. Since this mixed dog breed is known as a designer dog breed and quite rare to acquire, you will most likely pay a lot for a puppy. Remember, if you cannot afford that route, you can always go the adoption route and get an older dog for a much lower price. Shih Tzu Bulldog Mix Litter Size When a breeder produces this type of puppy, it requires a lot of work, which is why the price tag is so high. In addition, this dog breed has to be artificially inseminated because these two dog breeds would not have puppies naturally. Usually, the puppies must be delivered by a cesarean section, which again reflects the price. Breeders will typically yield between 2 to 9 puppies. Key Takeaways In this section, you will find the important details that you should know about the Shih Tzu Bulldog breed. This mixed dog breed will combine traits from both parent breeds. Her mama was a purebred French Bulldog weighing in at about 17 pounds. She had the typical Frenchie birthing difficulties, and required cesarean to deliver her 3 pups. Yoji's brother apparently looks nearly identical to her, because his owners saw me walking her one day, and they stopped me and asked why I had their dog. Puppy Purchasing Purchasing a puppy requires thoughtful planning. Health, parental lineage and temperament, as well as environment, are all important factors in purchasing a puppy. Predicting the mature size of a puppy is by no means an exact science, especially with a hybrid breed like the goldendoodle. How big will my goldendoodle puppy be? From birth until the gotchya day, puppies have fluctuated back and forth in terms of who weighs the most. Even though adult weight is a bit of a guess for a young puppy, expect mini goldendoodles to weigh 4lbs-9lbs at 8 weeks of age. A medium puppy and standard puppy may both weigh 9lbs at 8 weeks old, but the standard puppy with gain weight at a quicker rate than the medium. Like most dog breeds, goldendoodles generally do the majority of their growing in the first six months of life. In fact, many mini goldendoodle puppies reach half of their adult weight by four months. Standard goldendoodles may take a month or so longer to reach that halfway mark. The larger the dog, the longer growing takes. For mini goldendoodles, expect the weight to start leveling off between months of age. Standard goldendoodles, like other large dog breeds, will grow for a longer period of time. While this rule may work for many standards, it is not accurate with smaller-sized goldendoodles who finish growing at a younger age. When will my goldendoodle stop growing? Dogs can finish growing anywhere between years of age, but generally reach their maximum height by a year of age and spend the remaining months filling out. This means your dog might hit a growth spurt right after her first birthday — she might not get any taller but she could thicken up. Golden retrievers grow at a slower rate in terms of height than standard poodles, but fill out more quickly. Golden retrievers tend to finish growing and filling out between months while standard poodles can take up to 2 years to accomplish the same. What is a mini golden retriever? On average, they weigh pounds. Our Mini Goldens are crossed with specific Poodle lineage to avoid health and temperament issues the other breeds can cause, and are hypoallergenic, shed less and live longer than Golden Retrievers. Occasionally, we have some that weigh more than 45 pounds, or even less than 30 pounds. They generally have more Golden Retriever in them, so they are a closer carbon copy than the smaller Comforts. They generally have a little more poodle, so they may have more hypoallergenic and reduced shedding traits. Occasionally, we get white spots abstract or parti-colors from the Poodle side. Sometimes, we produce curly coated Comforts. We classify our coat types based on DNA results, not on visual appearance. Shed levels are individual to the dog, so while we hope that the majority of our dogs are low shedding, there are those who are moderate to heavy shedders. There are many factors that influence shedding as well. Some of these include season changes, weather, stress, illness, and a puppy transitioning to its adult coat. She is already so comfortable here and so attached. She gets so excited every time she sees us. And she has such a sweet disposition Everything goes for her. She just rolls with it. She loves to play and has lots of playful energy when she chases behind a toy or plays tug of war. But she loves to cuddle too, and she can busy herself well too without complaint. Yesterday we left her home when we went on a walk and she never barked or whined and was fast asleep when we returned. She accepted her crate as if she had never known any other place to rest. She just crawls in there and rests when she is tired. And when she wakes up, she quietly plays until we take her out of the playpen. Her potty training is going well. A couple of accidents here and there, but most of the time we catch her before anything happens, and she always does her business right away when we put her on the grass patch we have on the patio. She is getting a treat when she does her business. So, she actually figured out that if she spares some pee and squats several times, she will get several treats. Only One treat for the first time, everything after does not get rewarded any more. Wow, I have never seen a puppy learning that fast. And loving to learn. Being really food driven helps. I could not think of a better quarantine buddy to brighten up our day. I think she will be an amazing therapy dog who brightens up the day if many more people. Train your Frenchie here! You should start training your French Bulldog puppy as soon as you get them home. Puppy brains are a lot bigger than we think — they soak up so much good information despite their young age. French Bulldogs can be a rather independent breed of dog. In fact, we sometimes might feel like we need them more than they need us! What age can I start to train my French Bulldog puppy? You can start training your French Bulldog puppy as soon as you get them home. Build positive training experiences with Zigzag! We can start you off with a personalised training programme straight away in the Zigzag puppy training app , in fact, you can even use it before you bring your Frenchie puppy home as we have a pre-puppy section. Before bringing your French Bulldog puppy home, you can also get in touch with our Zigzag puppy experts with any of the many questions you may have! While blingy collars and outfits might be top of the list, there are some more sensible things you need to get your French Bulldog puppy that will help with your training. Here are my top picks for getting prepared for training your Frenchie. My favourite all-rounder is the Rapid Rewards treat pouch , it comes in many colours and looks stylish when on. The Mikki treat pouch is also good and a bit cheaper. You can go to town and choose pretty colours and designs for Frenchies! A lead — Around 2m is a good length for a lead. A training lead is a good idea as you can change the lengths of them to suit. A comfortable mat or a piece of non-slip vet bed. Treats The more smelly, the better. Have a look at the best puppy treats here. Chews and chew toys — lots of them! Our faves for Frenchies are West Paw Toppl and hollow buffalo horns for stuffing food into, and cow ears and pizzles for edible chews. Two identical toys : Excellent for swaps — your French Bulldog puppy will be super playful and enjoy the retrieving games in the Zigzag app. Originally, French Bulldogs were bred from English Bulldogs, who had a shady past as bull-baiting dogs. People enjoyed their cheerful nature and kept them as companion dogs after these awful blood sports were prohibited. When the need for these workers declined in England, their skills were still required in France, so the workers relocated, bringing their dogs with them. Relocate your training to Zigzag! When they arrived in France, they were adored by shopkeepers, butchers, and, most infamously, Les Belles de Nuit — the ladies of the night! What does this have to do with how I train my French Bulldog? Knowing the characteristics of the breed will help you better train your Frenchie puppy and understand why they behave the way they do. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Frenchies are incredibly loving and enjoy being in the spotlight. They can have a lot of energy possibly even more than a lot of energy and enjoy an active home life. Lack of stimulation WILL foster self-employment; provide them with items to rip up and pull apart to keep them out of trouble. By the way, if you leave them to it, they WILL go into your recycling and have a field day. Frenchies often think they are big dogs, thus they often do well playing with dogs larger than them. They look dashing in them too! Frenchies with tan points - black and tan Frenchie, blue and tan Frenchie, lilac and tan Frenchie, chocolate and tan Frenchie etc. Trindles - French Bulldogs which have brindle in their tan points. All black French Bulldogs - with no trace of brindle is also quite rare. How do you Artificially Inseminate a French bulldog? For the majority of dog breeds, natural mating is the most effective and cheapest way to produce a litter of puppies. This is not the scenario for French bulldogs. French bulldogs have unusually small hips and an oversized head. This makes it quite difficult for the male to mount the female naturally. When it comes to breeding French bulldogs, artificial insemination is the safest and most effective way. Caesarean sections for Frenchies One of the reasons why French bulldogs are quite expensive is because of the cost involved in birthing one. For Frenchies a C-section is usually considered the safest option. Caesarean section or C-section will involve the use of surgery to deliver the puppies. This is often necessary when a vaginal delivery will be too unsafe for the dam or the puppy or both. The oversized heads of the puppies and narrow pelvis of the dam makes it difficult for the dog to give birth naturally. What is the minimum mating age for French Bulldogs? Age of maturity differs from one dog breed to another. It has however been found that small breeds mature faster than large breeds. Male French bulldogs become fertile after about six months old. They can also reach full sexual maturity by 12 to 15 months. If your male Frenchie is healthy, he may even remain sexually active and fertile at old age. For your dam, their first heat season estrus comes after six months. In some situations though, this estrus has delayed for up to 18 months or even two years of age. The heat season of your dam should come at intervals of six months until old age. It is however considered controversial and against standard to breed your dam in her first season. According to the American Kennel Club Rules the registration of a litter out of a dam less than 8 months or more than 12 years of age is not ordinarily allowed. What is the Cycle of a French Bulldog Dam? Knowing the cycle of your female is necessary. This will help you track her reproductive periods. The cycle of a dam is divided into four: Proestrus: Your dam is in her proestrus when she has a bloody vaginal discharge and her vulva becomes swollen. This is when she attracts males, not for breeding. This period lasts for about nine days. Estrus: This follows the proestrus and also lasts for about nine days. During this time the female is fertile and will allow breeding. For breeding purposes, please note that ovulation will usually occur in the first 48 hours of this period. It is a period of about 60 to 63 days. It will occur whether or not your dam becomes pregnant. If your female becomes pregnant during estrus, the diestrus stage will last until she whelps or gives birth. False pregnancy is however also possible during this period. In this situation, your Dam may show signs of being pregnant even though she is not. Anestrus: This period lasts between three to four months. During this time, no sexual activity takes place. After the Estrus, you have to look for signs of pregnancy in your dam. These signs include an increase in appetite, weight, or nipple size. This is however not that conclusive in itself. As mentioned earlier, your dam may show pregnancy signs and still not be pregnant. A Vet can make this confirmation for you by conductingan ultrasound or X-ray or by examining her abdominal palpitation at 28 days. Once you have confirmed that your dam is pregnant, you have to start talking to the Vet about the special attention required for breeding a French bulldog. This will include how to identify emergency situations that would require immediate medical attention. This should also include details about her labor and what to expect after she gives birth. French bulldogs are like any other dog breed when it comes to pregnancy length. This period should last between 58 to 68 days. The average pregnancy period is usually 63 days from the day of conception. This is about two months altogether. A few days close to birthing, your dam may stop eating or have reduced appetite. Approximately 24 hours after her temperature drops, she can be expected to enter the first stage of labor when the cervix dilates and opens the birth canal for the passage of puppies. At this time, she will pant, strain, and appear restless. A few moments to birth, her body temperature may drop to 99 degrees or lower. This stage is then followed by actual abdominal straining and birthing. As mentioned above natural birth is not recommended for French Bulldogs due to their breathing difficulties and small hips coupled with larger puppy heads. Compared to other dogs that birth quite a sizable number of puppies, French bulldogs only birth a few. When breeding a French bulldog, the number of puppies you can expect in the litter will range from 3 to 5. There are some rare instances where French bulldogs have birthed as high as 7 puppies. French bulldogs are naturally small breeds. As such, a smaller number of litter mates would mean better conditions for the puppies inside the womb. The complications that may arise out of doing this will not only endanger the female, it may also create avoidable birth defects for the puppies. What is a pup back deal between French Bulldog breeders? A pup back deal is a puppy back to the Frenchie stud owner in exchange for the stud service. In most cases a puppy back is not ideal and can fall through for many reasons. If you insist on doing this type of deal you should consider the following to protect yourself: Always have a contract no matter who it is, even if it is a relative. Wording is very important. It is advisable to have a lawyer draft a sample agreement for you that you can use for future deals. Only make this deal with someone local that you really trust and have a relationship with. Open lines of communication is key. Always keep in mind that if the deal fall through for any reason it may sour the relationship so ask yourself if that deal is worth it to you. And finally know that not everyone is an honest person but on the same token not everyone is a dishonest person either. How do you know if two French Bulldog puppies are twins? It is rare but it does happen. How do we determine whether or not two French Bulldogs are identical twins? When the mother Frenchie dog is giving birth, count the placentas. If two newborn Frenchie puppies share a placenta there is a good chance you have some identical twins on your hands. If you want to know for sure your puppies are identical twins you can confirm that with a blood test. This is it for this Pawsletter. They are can lazy dogs, but they are also eager to learn. The upbringing must be done with patience and determination. The French Bulldog is a small dog with a big ego, so it should be treated in the same way as a large dog. Because of the size, we often forget to treat the French Bulldog like a normal dog. It is important that he knows his place in the ranking. When raising your french bulldog puppy, he will need to learn his place in your family. Learning social skills We have done our best to get the puppy used to as many things as possible: people, children, other animals, sounds such as from the vacuum cleaner, radio, TV, microwave, toys, water, the car, etc. This is a good start, but the socialization period continues for 6 months. The primary socialization was done by the breeder or so it should be… , but the secondary socialization period will have to be done by you as the new owner. You will notice that your puppy can still become shy and anxious, so go on walks with your puppy as much as possible. Certainly, do not get angry if he responds anxiously, but do not go overboard in comforting too. If you get angry, you increase his fear; if you comfort him, you reward his fear. Show who is the boss Stay consistent with your Frenchie: if you forbid anything from your puppy, you will also have to keep forbidding it once the Frenchie is mature. It is also very important that everyone in the family applies the same rules. Never make a low posture when playing, not even with a small dog like the French Bulldog. If you have small children who are still crawling, then the puppy can see him as kin. Never leave your children alone with your French Bulldog. You determine the beginning and the end of an action or game. Ignore your Frenchie if he is pushy to ask for attention by pushing his nose or his paw. Always let your dog come to you, do not go to your dog yourself. Prevent the dog from entering or leaving the house first. Let the dog sit, and then go outside yourself first. It is certainly advisable to do puppy training possibly from 10 weeks. You can do this perfectly yourself. General interaction When raising your french bulldog puppy, always be consistent. Stay calm and patient. Do not show hesitant behavior, but be confident. Make sure you have a good tone in your voice: commands and rewards are clearly different. Command: neutral tone — correction: low tone — reward: high tone. If you give a command, the dog must execute this. Repeat the command and help your Frenchie. There is no point in repeating the command endlessly or getting angry and start yelling. If your dog performs a command correctly, reward him. Immediately correct unwanted behavior. A dog can only remember things for a few seconds, so he will no longer know why you correct it if you wait too long. After the correction, you let him do something and reward him for doing well with your voice. Problem Behavior: Unwanted growling There can be several reasons why a dog growls at forbidden things, such as teeth coming through, fear, boredom, and lack of exercise. Give your French bulldog different toys to prevent him from nibbling on your personal items. Make sure that the toys offer sufficient challenges, such as a toy from which something tasty comes out when it is in a certain position. If you see your French Bulldog growl at a prohibited item, take it from him and give him one of its own chew toys. Reward him if he accepts the toy. Good socialization can do wonders here. Reward the dog by giving him a special treat and a chew toy to keep him busy if there is a visitor, for example. French Bulldogs are very vigilant by nature, and sometimes it is difficult to prevent them from barking when he hears a suspicious sound. It is, of course, possible that you appreciate this characteristic. Yet it is not fun if he barks for a long time. It is very important to reward your Frenchie if he does this correctly. If your French Bulldog wants to warn you that someone is coming or if he hears a suspicious noise, then reward him for the warning. Then let him know that it is enough and reward him if he stops. Aggression Aggressive behavior may never be tolerated. There may be countless reasons why your dog wants to bite, but there is never a valid excuse. As a puppy, your dog must learn that they are not allowed to bite, even when playing. The most important measure to correct aggressive behavior is to make it clear that you are the boss. Suppose your dog bites, you can think about the possible factors that influence his perception of his place in the pack your family. However, if your French Bulldog thinks he is the pack leader, the problem cannot be underestimated, and it is nevertheless advisable to seek professional help. Your veterinarian, a dog trainer, or a behavioral therapist for dogs can advise you. This was PART 4. Disclosure HappyFrenchBulldog. That said, there are some unique challenges when raising a French Bulldog into a well-rounded canine. Overcome Stubbornness Early Frenchies are adorable. It seems like they know it too. They can be stubborn and even manipulative if you let them. Many people try to take advantage of training them with food, but often they end up with an overweight dog who only listens when they have a treat ready to go. Instead, you should begin training your Frenchie as soon as he or she comes home. Crate training from an early age is the best way to help them learn not to go potty inside the house. Far from being cruel, however, giving your dog a crate gives them a den that mimics how they live in the wild. More importantly, few dogs will want to use the bathroom in their home. Introduce them to the crate slowly. There are two big rules to using a crate properly that many people neglect. The first is using the crate as a punishment. If you have children then let them know that the crate is off-limits. This helps reinforce the crate as a positive thing for your dog. Some of the problems associated just come from the exceptionally short muzzle of French Bulldogs. Other problems also crop up frequently in the breed, such as allergies and food sensitivities , unfortunately. You should always watch your Frenchie for signs of becoming obese. Likewise, you need to pick and choose your battles when it comes to walks. Bad weather conditions can cause your Frenchie to have trouble breathing during your exercise session. Read more about the French Bulldog diet. Things like dehumidifiers and air conditioners can help dogs who are home all day. Water should always be available as well. Water is a non-negotiable requirement for any dog, just make sure they have ready access to it. Keeping Frenchies Healthy and Happy While French Bulldogs have some unique challenges to their husbandry, you can help to raise a healthy and happy dog without having to go to extreme lengths. Give the above tips a shot and always do your research when you think something may be amiss. If you do that, then you and your dog are sure to have a wonderful life together! She started this site as a hobby project to help dog owners find answers to the questions she had while owning her first dog. Pin5 5 Shares There are so many misconceptions about Frenchies, and I hope you find the real-life experiences I write about on the blog helpful in dispelling some of them. But there is an element of truth to one common opinion when people say Frenchies can be difficult to raise and train… so how hard can it be? How hard is it to raise a French Bulldog? French Bulldogs have a reputation for being stubborn dogs so you would think they would be hard to raise. As a Frenchie owner myself, I think generalizations like this are very misleading. We often look back and compare it to having a baby and toddler again. It was honestly that hectic at times with stuff getting chewed, pee and poop all over the kitchen floor, and him running away and not listening to us. It took a while to get him toilet trained, he was very bitey, and seemed to take longer than we expected to be trained. However, I think much of it comes down to how hard you work, plus some other factors. This can be due to genetics and their treatment before you picked them up. We took Claude to our local vets and it helped us raise him and train him to be very calm. You can find a list of my training guides lower down the page. They are not and need exercise and walks to be happy. Mental stimulation: Healthy and happy puppies need to have active brains, not just physical activity. Health and care: Keep them clean, feed them a good diet, and keep up to date with their vet appointments and treatments. In a moment, I will break those down a little further, with tips on how you can put these all into action with links into the guides for each one. Is raising two French Bulldogs more difficult? Whilst we only have one Frenchie, we will often look after another one. The reason is, you can find that they will learn from each other, and mimic good and bad behaviors. That can make training a little easier. Read this if you are thinking about getting a puppy. He knows what time to wake up, when his food should be out, and when walk times are. Dogs like things to be predictable! Have plenty of toys Keep your Frenchie mentally active, and you will help to raise a happy and healthy dog. You can take them for walks twice a day, but they will also need indoor playtime. You can buy toys that challenge them mentally and others which just rely on classic games such as tug of war… see the 18 best Frenchie toys I recommend. Your Frenchie puppy will love to play with plenty of different toys. Include them in everything Claude has become part of our family which means including him on everything that we do. When he gets left out of something, he looks really put out. Taking them out from a young age post-vaccinations exposes them to all the different elements early on that will help them to grow up as well adjusted dogs. The remainder is vet approved food that is packed full of all the nutrients he needs. When he does have snacks, we make sure they are things like healthy fruit and vegetables. Below you can access lists of safe and dangerous foods for Frenchies to print off and keep.
The History of the Rottweiler Golden Retriever Mix Like most relatively new hybrids in the canine world, this dog has an unknown origin. Some say they were probably created during the s when purebred crosses were made to produce healthier dogs. Another good thing that happened when designer dogs started showing up is having mixed breeds that are little to no hair, smaller, and softer. But what do you think of this doggie? Parent Breed: Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers originated in Scotland in the midth century, where they were used as hunting dogs to retrieve waterfowl. They are the third most well-known breed in the United States and rank fourth in the world-renowned canine psychology book "The Intelligence of Dogs. There are also two categories for Goldens — one bred for the show ring, and the other are field dogs. According to breed standards, the average size of a Golden Retriever is .Parent Breed: Rottweiler Rottweilers take their name from the German town of Rottweil, where they were originally bred to herd cattle for butchers. According to their breed standard, they are considered medium to large dogs and have a much different temperament than Golden Retrievers. Rotties are obedient, confident, intelligent, and protective dogs. Due to their watchdog instincts, many consider them to be aggressive. However, a study showed Rottweilers to be average regarding aggression, but it also indicated that the breed showed above-average aggression towards strangers. As with most pets, aggressive behavior stems from an irresponsible owner. Things like neglect, abuse, and lack of socialization will inevitably lead to aggression — regardless of breed. But don't be fooled by their robust and rugged appearance. They love their humans and have even been known to act clownishly around them. Although Rottweilers are still bred to herd livestock, they also have an important place in today's society - police dogs, guard dogs, and search and rescue dogs. Rotties can measure up to 27 inches 69 cm and weigh up to pounds 60 kg. Appearance of the Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix Mixed breeds can have varying looks as they may inherit physical traits from both parents or favor one over the other. However, there are some aspects that we can predict based on the parents. Most of them have the build of the Golden Retriever. If not, they still won't be as muscular as the Rotties. The Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix has delicate facial features — loose, folded ears with small tufts, bright, intelligent eyes that can be amber or brown, and black noses. To complement the athletic body of this doggo is a long feathered tail. How big do Golden Rotties get? Most Golden Rottweiler mixes are large dogs weighing around 70 to 90 pounds 32 to 41 kg and growing to a height of between 24 to 28 inches 61 to 71 cm. But this fido cannot be taller than its parents. This doggo will fit best in a large house. It may also fit in smaller homes with spacious yards, but they are NOT suitable for apartment living. No, they are not hypoallergenic and are considered moderate shedders. Rottweiler Golden Retriever mix has a thick, dense, straight, and soft coat that can be medium or long in length. Coat color is yet another example of the genetic inconsistencies of this mix. You can also find them in solid colors such as black, brown, red or fawn, and brindle, but Golden shades are also possible, such as golden brown. They are bright, athletic, and protective of his master. Golden Rotties are generally good with children and other pets, but you should start obedience training them as early as possible. The good thing is that they will pick up the lessons quickly since they are smart. What can be problematic is that the Rottweiler Golden Retriever cross can be overprotective at times. Pay attention to their guarding nature and distrust of strangers, which can be signs of aggressive tendencies. Another quirk is that they are known to bark, chew, and bite excessively, especially if he doesn't get enough daily exercise.
