At feeding time, I make sure each puppy gets on a nipple so they don't have to struggle to find one. I make sure that each puppy gets an adequate amount of milk. Then, once I see that they have been well fed. I pick up one pup at a time and have the mom lick it to go potty. And then I put them in their little crib to ensure they are safe and not smooth by the mother until the next feeding 2 hours later. At three weeks, we feed the pups every 4 hours. But at this point, even though the pups eyes and ears are open. I still supervise the feeding to ensure that each pup is adequately fed and again not smothered by it's mother. I believe in giving these pups outstanding care. Even if that means that I lose a lot of sleep, and even if it ends up just saving one pups life. He doesn'tt chew anything and doesn't counter surf. He only barks at delivery people. Chance can share his people, toys, and his bed, but please let him have his food to himself - he didn't always have food and worries. Chance knows the up and down commands, though he won't get on furniture unless you tell me it is okay each time. He also know sit, stay, come, and shake. He uses a harness and that helps him learn not to do that. He is already much better at it, except with cats and rabbits - those are too exciting. June 13, We applied to adopt one of their dogs, however we never heard back from anyone in the organization for a month, there was no effort to return any form of communication. They only replied to a week old facebook message after I started leaving comments on their posts berating them for their poor service. They then went and rejected our application without giving a reason, only a one line email saying No. None of our references were called. When asked why we were rejected, and not even offered the chance to apply for a different dog, we were told we needed to have a fenced yard. My calls were rarely if ever returned by the organization's leader. It took months, and no less than 15 phone calls for me to get the dog's vet records - and I ended up having to track them down myself. That left me with no way of placing the dog in a kennel and NBR never offered any assistance. Basically I was on my own. Lower-level volunteers would call me, but it was always "[Leader] is so busy saving dogs lives that she just doesn't have time, but she knows how great the dog is doing with you". Obviously, it takes a lot of repetition of this scenario to happen for a puppy to learn not to bite so hard, but this is essentially how it works out. Yes, you will need to help teach your puppy ABI. You can do this two ways: Set up puppy playdates and take them to puppy kindergarten so other puppies can teach them ABI. You actually want them to bite a little bit and learn to control how hard they bite. When your puppy comes home with you, it is up to you to teach your puppy how to control the force of their bite. Biting down on the thick fur coat of his mother or littermates is a lot different than biting down on human skin. By not teaching your puppy bite inhibition, you will risk your puppy turning into a dangerous adult. Puppy bites are a lot different than adult dog bites. Once your puppy learns how to control the strength of his bite, eventually the bites become gentler, and in time, your puppy will learn to stop biting altogether. This is part of teaching your puppy bite inhibition. This is a way to mimic how puppies play together, when one puppy bites another puppy too hard, that puppy yelps in pain, and will walk away. In some cases, puppies could get even more worked up by the noise and keep on biting. This is when you need to walk away. When your puppy has calmed down, you can resume playing with your puppy. When your puppy bites you again, repeat the steps of yelping and walking away. Eventually, your puppy will learn to soften his bite, because biting too hard ends playtime. Reward Good Behaviour Every time your puppy stops biting and nipping at you, you need to see this as positive behaviour. Good behaviour should be rewarded so that your puppy learns that he did something good. Rewarding good behaviour with affection and praise is great, you can also use treats, or toys, sometimes the best reward for your puppy is just spending time with them. Be Patient and Consistent Owning a puppy requires a lot of patience! It is so easy to lose your patience at times, but you need to know that your puppy is learning what is right and wrong, and that takes time. It might not happen overnight, but as long as you remain consistent and patient, your pup will learn good behaviour. If your puppy is nipping at your pant legs or sleeves, chances are he is loving the tugging feeling and is actually already playing tug-of-war. Instead of using your clothing, redirect his attention to a rope toy. One thing to be careful of is being too rough with tug-of-war, especially when your puppy is going through his teething phase. A game of fetch offers your pup a distraction from biting, and Golden Retriever puppies naturally love to retrieve things. If your puppy gets all riled up when you pet him, distract him by feeding him small treats from your other hand. This will help your puppy get used to being touched without mouthing. Encourage noncontact forms of play, such as fetch and tug-of-war, rather than wrestling and rough play with your hands. Once your puppy can play tug safely, keep tug toys in your pocket or have them easily accessible. If he starts to mouth you, you can immediately redirect him to the tug toy. If your puppy bites at your feet and ankles, carry his favorite tug toy in your pocket. Whenever he ambushes you, instantly stop moving your feet. Take out the tug toy and wave it enticingly. Instead of giving your puppy time-outs for hard biting, start to give him time-outs every time you feel his teeth touch your skin. Then immediately walk away from him. Ignore him for 30 to 60 seconds. If your puppy follows you or continues to bite and nip at you, leave the room for 30 to 60 seconds. After the brief time-out, return to the room and calmly resume whatever you were doing with your puppy. Then, instead of leaving the room when your puppy mouths you, you can take hold of his leash and lead him to a quiet area, tether him, and turn your back to him for the brief time-out. Then untie him and resume whatever you were doing. Spray areas of your body and clothing that your puppy likes to mouth before you start interacting with him. If he mouths you or your clothing, stop moving and wait for him to react to the bad taste of the deterrent. Praise him lavishly when he lets go of you. Apply the bad taste to your body and clothes for at least two weeks. After two weeks of being punished by the bitter taste every time he mouths you, your puppy will likely learn to inhibit his mouthy behavior. Be patient and understanding. This works for some puppies, but for others, it just seems to arouse the pup and make matters worse. You will have to experiment to find out what works for you and your pup. You should withdraw all of your attention from your puppy for very hard bites. Do not over-correct your puppy so they become afraid of biting. After your puppy has calmed down, use a chew toy as a reward and let them chew it in your lap or lying by your side. Things we recommend when preparing for your goldendoodle puppy Food All of our puppies are on Royal canin med size puppy food, we transition them to Royal canin med adult food at 1 year of age. Theese are a few of our favorites! Lean treats that you get from your vet. Crates We highly recommend crate training. We like the black metal crates with a front and side door. We consider the side door a must, the crate can go so many more places in the house and car. A collar puts pressure on their developing tracheas. Here are a few that we have found that are great and long lasting! Red or black Kong - not the pink or blue that says it's for puppies - they can chew them up in no time. We put peanut butter in the Kong and give it to them in their crates; they love it! Nylabones - These are great when they are really teething, and even our older dogs like to chew on them. We have found the Dinosaur one to be a favorite for both Puppies and Adults! The Just for puppies ring bone dog teething chew toy is also a puppy favorite Chuckit - for playing ball. These are awesome! If you get a medium size, any tennis ball will fit! Just don't let your puppy have the tennis ball to chew on, it will wear down their teeth. Go Dog has fun soft toys, we aways get the ones with the chew guard! Brush The Soft Slicker brush by Safari is great for puppies, as they get older and their coat gets longer the Chris Christianson slicker brush works great! The best way to make sure your Doodle isnt matted is a metal comb. You can find it on Amazon or at a farm feed store. DVD Because our puppies are raised with the puppy culture program and come to you happy, confident, and ready to learn, we ask that all our families who get one of our puppies also watch the puppy culture dvd or vod so you can follow along with what the puppies are learning and continue it after you get your puppy home. For Heartworms Your vet will have their recommendations; but if given a choice we use heartgard or sentinel. We would NOT use trifexis as it has many side affects. Check out the Crate Shopping page for the crate we use and recommend. Medium - Standard sized Goldendoodles need at least a 42 inch crate - If you have room, get the 48 inch. Doodles sleep stretched out like frogs. They like a lot of room to be comfortable. Small Doodles can use a 36 inch crate. This will work for them for several months. Smaller for mini-small Goldendoodle puppies. Food and water bowls stainless steel or ceramic, no plastic. Waste Bags Poochie-Bells to hang by back door. Helps with house training - they learn to ring the bell to alert you that they need to go out. I highly recommend them for house training your new puppy. While you do not need a bed right away I do recommend getting a nice pad or elevated dog bed for training purposes, we regularly use pads or elevated beds for training, and for placing our dogs and puppies, we keep ours in the main area of our home to place our dogs when people come over, during dinner, etc. We recommend getting one with a divider that can be adjusted, it will make crate training easier when your puppy first comes home and will prevent you from having to buy multiple crates. You can purchase a nice pad or cushion for the crate but we do not recommend using it inside of the crate until you are sure they will not have accidents in the crate until then use a towel or small blanket that is easier to wash! Single Door Dog Crate Durable heavy-duty slide bolt latch firmly locks the door to keep your dog safely inside while you're away. Edible — N-bones in any flavor are great. Theodore also loves pork chomps and his Himalaya dog chew. We started Theodore with this leash and this harness. F1s are generally known to be more golden retriever looking than other generations of goldendoodles. F1s usually have a straight to wavy coat. As they get older, their coats tend to look more shaggy. F1s may shed. Theodore and his littermates do not shed. Below is a recent picture of Theodore at 9 months old. The coat types vary in appearance but F1bs tend to have a more curly poodle type coat. The F1b should not shed and is a good choice for families who have allergy sufferers or do not want dog hair in the house. One parent must be an F1b or multigen goldendoodle. A poodle bred to a multigen still produces a multigen. Multigens are usually low shedders. The coat types vary from curly to wavy depending on the parents. Franklin Multigen Mini Goldendoodle These are just the basics. An experienced breeder will be able to provide you with the best guidance on what to expect from each generation of goldendoodle, especially traits that may be passed down specific to puppies in the litter. How did you find Theodore? What advice do you have for finding a breeder? When it comes to finding a breeder the first thing I always tell people is to do your research! Theodore was our first dog and we wanted get our first dog from breeder for temperament and health reasons. We waited until we knew we would have the time to dedicate to raising a puppy. I was in my second semester of business school with a very flexible class schedule and Phil knew his work schedule for the next few months would be flexible. Puppies require a lot of time and attention — especially in the first few months and we knew our desire to get a dog aligned with having the time to dedicate to a puppy. Theodore is super sweet and loving to everyone children, animals, strangers and beyond. He is ball obsessed, plays very well with other dogs, loves giving kisses and wrestling. He is energetic and playful but equally affectionate and cuddly. If I am sitting on the floor, he will always come over to sit in my lap. He is very smart — he knows how to manipulate us for playtime or cuddles on demand. He is attentive to anything we do — if we are coughing or trip he will look concerned, come over and start licking us. Phil and I love him to pieces! With lots of treats, positive reinforcement and love. Theodore was food motivated and very eager to please which helped us train him relatively quickly. It was my favorite dog training book and I highly recommend it. The author uses positive reinforcement training techniques, has a plethora of experience and was responsible for training Sunny and Bo Obama. We brought Theodore home when he was 8. Our vet told us that socializing Theodore early on was important for his development so we made it a priority. We made a big effort to schedule several indoor play dates with immunized dogs we knew in our building during his first few weeks at home. We transitioned him off of pee pads once we our vet said it was safe to take him outside. He was fully potty trained by 5 months old. Did you work with a trainer? When Theodore was older, we did a few lessons to correct some habits like jumping on people, stealing objects and improve leash walking. She is wonderful with dogs and helps solve the problem you are having very quickly. How did you get him to like his crate? When we brought Theodore home, we placed his crate in our bedroom in a spot where he could see us when he was sleeping. We got this Precision wire crate in a size intermediate — 36 x 23 x 25 up to 70lbs he could grow into and we used the divider while he was potty training. Dogs enjoy a cave-like atmosphere and feel safe when their crate is enclosed. We covered the top and sides of his crate with a light blanket, leaving the front open for airflow. He hated his crate and cried. As a dog parent, it breaks your heart to see them crying. My husband slept on the floor with Theodore the first night and then after that we fully committed to getting Theodore adjusted to the crate. The advice we were given was to make the crate a place where exciting things were happening. We would give him lots of treats and praise as he went to his crate at night. We also put one of our t-shirts in the crate so our smell would be close. Before leaving the house, we would always give him a high value treat ex. Over the next few weeks he began to love his crate. By four months he was adjusted to his crate, never barked, cried or protested going in. Once it was clear he was happy in the crate, we began to let him sleep on the floor of our bedroom. We still crate him whenever we leave the house. Note — Never use the crate as a form of punishment. This will cause your puppy to fear the crate and you want your puppy to feel the crate is a place of peace. Can I Have a Treat Please? What funny things does Theodore do? There is never a shortage of things to laugh about with Theodore. Lately, he has become obsessed with fall. Oftentimes, when he sees fall leaves, he will nose dive into the leaves, chew them and then proceed to blissfully roll around in them. Theodore 9 Months Old Has Theodore changed since you got him? Theodore has not changed much! He has always had a huge appetite, wonderful temperament and lots of energy. The only change I have noticed is that his coat is darker. I spent hours reading about the best treats, toys, gear for puppies so that we had everything for our little guy before he arrived. As we are gearing up for my sister-in-law and aunt to bring home their new goldendoodle puppies, I thought a little blog post about my favorite things would be helpful to all the puppy parents and the soon-to-be puppy parents out there. Here is my must-have list for your goldendoodle puppy! We kept Clifton in here at night and when we would leave the house. This one fits perfectly with the crate. We used these to create a safe little area for Clifton once we stopped crate training him to be in. This clips right into the seat belt and on to any harness. This spray helps prevent your dog from chewing on things like your furniture, shoes, etc. You will be using this spray every time there is an accident in the house those first few weeks. We still use this spray 5 years later. Harness : We recently purchased this harness , and we LOVE this one and would recommend this to anyone with a pup as this harness is a little trickier to wiggle out of. Clifton has a medium he weighs about 30 pounds. Collar : We have a bunch of different collars that we switch between, but I love this cognac leather collar for every day. We have this one , and as soon as we switched to this, Clifton walked so much better and stopped pulling. Some of my current favorites are this modern set which is great because it includes a stand. Did You Feed the Dog? I love the smell of it. John Paul Pet Lavender Mint Detangling Spray : Doodles get matted super easily, so we add this detangling spray into our grooming routine to help with the matting. Andis Pet Steel Comb : If you can keep your furbaby mat-free this comb is great for combing him or her out. Safari Dematting Comb : You are going to need a de-matting comb to helpwith matting especially as your puppy gets older. It is the best thing we have bought, and we use it all the time. Start doing this when they are little. We love this little set that includes the toothpaste, brush and finger brush. Towel : We keep two of these pet towels in the bathroom where we give Clifton a bath. They are great at absorbing the water after a bath. We also pack these when we take him to the dog beach or Florida. Mushers Secret Paw Wax : If your pup lives in a cold climate, this is perfect for their dry, cracked paws that will come in winter. Shopping for toys was one of my favorite parts when I first started shopping for Clifton. My advice is not to buy too many toys at first like I did. Your puppy is going to destroy those cute, stuffed animals quickly. Grab a few because they make for some cute photos and toys around the house, but also stock up on things that will help when they need to chew. One thing to keep in mind when getting toys is to avoid any rope toys. Pups can eat the strings and have them wrap around their intestines — which is NOT good. So just skip them altogether. It is supposed to help transition them because it has a battery heartbeat and a pouch to make it warm. If you can, ask the breeder to rub it on his mom or the other puppies so it smells like them. Your Puppy's New Home 1. Foldable Wire Crate I recommend a wire-sided crate with a removable tray and adjustable divider. This encourages pottying outside. This pen should be helpful for the first several months. Puppy Toys Each of these items are in my personal inventory for puppy families to purchase when they pick up their puppy! My top recommendation is the Snuggle Puppy. KONG puppy toys are also available in my inventory for purchase. You can choose to purchase for in-person pick up in your puppy pack, or order to be shipped to you. This can cause crying at night and anxiety being alone for the first weeks home. A snuggle puppy is a soft toy with a heart beat simulator and heating pack. These features make it feel like your puppy is cuddling with another dog. It makes a huge difference for your puppy! I encourage every family to order one for your puppy pack so I can send it home with you on adoption day. Play fetch, or stuff with treats or canned food to keep your puppy content for crate time. It is soft rubber, and squeaks when your dog catches or chews. Medium is the size of an average tennis ball. Food should be offered twice per day: morning and night. Food should be restricted before a long period of crate time and at least an hour before bed, to prevent unnecessary accidents.
