How To Manage A Shedding Labradoodle Puppy Coat Once your Labradoodle puppy starts shedding its puppy coat, it is advisable that you brush your dog regularly and at least groom it a couple of times every week or during daily periods of excessive shedding. However, to avoid such dire situations, you need to make sure that you groom and brush your puppy regularly to avoid any matting. All mammals shed a little hair, even humans, however we breed carefully so our pups are extremely low shedding. With three quarters of dogs in Australia being allowed inside, along with health, temperament and conformation, it is an important part of breeding very family friendly dogs. Puppy Coats All puppies have a really soft fur which serves to keep them warm when they are only little. Puppy coats within a litter differ, and they will also differ in some ways to their adult coats, which eventually replace it. Even pups which are very low or non shedding will have a puppy coat which will be replaced by their adult coat. The adult coats are usually thicker and fuller than puppy coats, but sometimes not quite as soft in the feel. However, during the initial 6 or so months of your puppy's life, the puppy coat will naturally shed out. The skin should continue to look healthy while this happens. This occurs with all dog breeds, even poodles. What To Do? Regular brushing during this young stage of the dogs life, will help remove the puppy coat, and also has lots of other benefits: Bonding with your dog. They love being brushed, and will learn to sit quietly and enjoy the interaction. Preventing Matting It is important that your dog never gets matted. Shampoo time! It is really up to you to decide how often to shampoo your pup. We do ours about every two weeks. If your dog rolls in something unsavoury, or has a digging session in the garden, you may need to do him more frequently. There are lots of good shampoos on the market. We prefer an unscented, paragon free natural soap such as Castile soap available from health food shops. Drying, Blowing Dirt or sand from coats Human hair dryers are not good for dogs. They are too hot and a very high pitch which many dogs dont like. They are also really ineffective in comparison to a blast dryer, such as the one on the right. We use the 8mm size for our dogs. Alvalley is a high quality brand for all lengths. For an adult dog, use an 8 mm or larger. For a young puppy, an 8 mm leash works fine, but I prefer the smaller 6 mm Alvalley Snap Lead one for ease of use when working at home. This size fits easily into the outside pocket of a treat bag. If going for a walk, use a more substantial leash such as the 8 mm Alvalley leash. For at-home use, a 6 mm collar is fine. I like to attach a snap lead permanently to a martingale collar for ease of use. The collar and leash can easily be slipped off and on as needed. Puppies and even some dogs like to chew the plastic ones. At 10 weeks of age, we are using very small bowls for ease of use during training. Golden Retrievers tend to act like they are starving and eat too fast, even at their correct weight. These bowls slow them down so that they will come closer to chewing their food than inhaling it. I like to use buckets instead of bowls for water. Puppies love to dig in their water which makes a mess out of it. Hang the bucket on the outside of the crate by the handle that is on the bucket. Then attach the clip for security by using only one side of the clip to attach the handle to the crate. Leave the other end of the clip just hanging. Never put water inside a crate with a dog. I recommend the 2-quart size for one or two big dogs. This size is also a good size for a puppy. I use two snaps to stabilize the bucket. Though wire crates usually have a divider so that you can size the crate down, we recommend that you go ahead and purchase a 24 inch wire crate along with the correct size for your dog when he is grown. Most puppies can use the 24 inch crates for about 2 months after they are weeks of age. It is also helpful to have a smaller crate when traveling. If you want this option with a Summer Brook puppy, you can have a small icrate shipped to our home address for you to pick up when you get here. The best size crate for adult girls is a 36X24X27 inch wire crate. For an adult boy, use either a 42X28X30 or 36X24X27 inch wire crate. We prefer wire crates in most cases because they give more ventilation and Golden Retrievers like it to be cool. I prefer the crate with the double door because you will have the opportunity to use it turned sideways with the entrance on the side as well as the end. The Icrates are also two inches shorter and two inches narrower than the Life Stages crate. They are larger at the bottom than the top so they fit better in the back of an SUV or van. They are crash tested and have excellent safety records. These crates are a bit difficult to set up and take down so we only recommend them for those that want a crate that stays in a vehicle most of the time. They are perfect for families that take their dogs with them a lot and want a somewhat permanent fixture in their vehicle. This crate is very lightweight and sets up and folds down quickly and easily. We love these crates for motels and dog shows. Wood Crate Denhaus Townhaus : I recommend this crate if looks are important to you. This crate looks just like a nice end table. Though it was expensive, mine has held up well for several years. Crate Pad Primo Pads: These are my favorite crate pads. They are made of a heavy-duty vinyl and I have yet to have a dog chew one up. The vinyl is cool so that my dogs like them even in the summer. This is a raised cot-like bed that is cool and comfortable. There is a new Kuranda Bed that we have not tried ourselves but it looks amazing. It is a raised cot like the aluminum bed that we have loved for years but it is sized to fit perfectly into a crate! We have purchased both the aluminum as well as the less-expensive PVC Kuranda beds. Our aluminum beds still look brand new but our PVC beds are starting to warp a little after a few years. We like the Ballistic Nylon fabric which has held up for us for several years. The large is the correct size for both boy and girl Goldens. We have two of them and they are as comfortable as many human beds. We have the extra-large size but a large would be plenty big enough for a girl. Most Bernedoodles have the wavy hair coat that is low to no shed hair type. Most people with allergies are ok with this hair type. Bernedoodles with a more curly coat are more like the poodle and will not shed. It is very rare to have a bernedoodle with straight hair. Brushing your Bernedoodle twice a week will make shedding less noticeable. Bernedoodles need to be brushed at least once a week to prevent mating. It is necessary to have your Bernedoodle clipped every few months, you can do this yourself or have a professional do it. What size is a Bernedoodle? Bernedoodles come in different sizes just like the poodle. They come in standard, mini, and micro mini. Standard: These range in size from pounds inches at the shoulder. If one of our Bernese is crossed with certain bernedoodles, the result is unfurnished. We've had many families specifically ask for an unfurnished bernedoodle. Some families don't like the beard of the furnished bernedoodle or they love the bernese look, but like the bernedoodle temperament more. I often have customers requesting a specific generation for no real reason other than they felt that is the generation that they want based on reading information that is not well researched. Instead, I ask them to refocus on the coat type, color, and size that they are looking for. There is no reason to focus on a specific generation if you are simply looking for a healthy and attractive pet. I have been breeding Bernedoodles for about 6 years and I have noticed no difference at all in the health of any different generation of Bernedoodle. There is no evidence that a specific generation of the Bernedoodle will affect the health of the puppy. Any of our Bernedoodles regardless of generation has been bred for the three things we focus on: temperament, beauty, and health. Of course, mother nature is a brutal force and things can go wrong even with the best planning but I can count on one hand how many major health issues I have had as a breeder. It is a combination of both an art and a science and we employ both tactics to reduce risk when we can. Genetic screening in combination with pedigree matching is the method we use to produce healthy puppies. Since the Bernedoodle is a breed in development there is not a lot of long term data regarding the longevity but based on what we know about the Bernese Mountain Dog, Poodles, and overall longevity based on size, it will likely be that a smaller sized Bernedoodle will live longer than a larger Bernedoodle. One more thing I will mention- Bernedoodle Generation and Allergy friendliness are not really correlated. A person can be allergic to either saliva or dander and if you are allergic to saliva you will be allergic to any and all Bernedoodles, Poodles, etc. If you are allergic to dander a Bernedoodle with the appropriate coat type will likely work for you. Before reading through the following description of coat types, I will say most Bernedoodle coats other than the Bernese Coat we have experience with have very little to no shedding. That being said we have almost never seen a curly-coated Bernedoodle shed. Bernedoodle coat types: There are four main coat types that a Bernedoodle can have: Straight: This is a coat type only achieved in Bernedoodle-to-Bernese or Bernedoodle-to-Bernedoodle breedings. While these dogs have a fluffy look, still they have the least amount of curl to their hair compared to the other coat types. Visually, they have a loose wave. We see this coat type very often in our Ultra Bernedoodles. Wavy: This is the traditional coat type of most F1 Bernedoodles that is not super curly but also not straight either. Wavy-coated dogs require brushing and grooming on a regular basis. Curly: This is the coat type that is most similar to that of a purebred poodle. These dogs rarely shed and often are the most suitable for those worried about loose hair. Curly coated dogs are the highest maintenance of all of the traditional Bernedoodle coats and will require more frequent bathing and grooming. Bernese Coat: This coat type is a throwback to the purebred Bernese Mountain Dog and often times exhibits the same level of shedding as well.
