It was developed in the United Kingdom from fishing dogs imported from the colony of Newfoundland now a province of Canada , and was named after the Labrador region of that colony. It is among the most commonly kept dogs in several countries, particularly in the European world. The Labrador is friendly, energetic, and playful. It may also be trained as a guide or assistance dog , or for rescue or therapy work. Another early advocate of these Newfoundland fishing dogs was the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury , who bred them for their expertise in waterfowling. The dogs Buccleuch Avon and Buccleuch Ned, given by Malmesbury to Buccleuch, were mated with bitches carrying blood from those originally imported by the 5th Duke and the 10th Earl of Home. The offspring are the ancestors of all modern Labradors. John's water dogs bred by European settlers in Newfoundland were first introduced to Britain from ships trading between Canada and Poole in Dorset. These were then bred with British hunting dogs to create what became known as the Labrador Retriever. Early writers have confused the Labrador with the much larger Newfoundland and the Lesser Newfoundland , with Charles St. John even referring to the Lesser Newfoundland as the Newfoundland. Colonel Peter Hawker describes the first Labrador as being not larger than an English Pointer , more often black than other colours, long in its head and nose with a deep chest, fine legs, and short and smooth coat, and did not carry its tail as highly as the Newfoundland. John's breed of these dogs [6] [7] in the fifth edition of his book Introductions to Young Sportsman, published in .Black Chocolate There is a great deal of variety among Labradors. The following characteristics are typical of the conformation show bred bench-bred lines of this breed in the United States and are based on the American Kennel Club standard. Size: Labradors are a medium-large breed. They should be as long from the withers to the base of the tail as they are from the floor to the withers. The AKC standard includes an ideal weight for dogs of 25—36 kg 55—80 lb and for bitches as 25—32 kg 55—70 lb. The coat is water-resistant, so the dog does not get cold when taking to the water in the winter. That means that the dog naturally has a slightly dry, oily coat. Acceptable colours are black, yellow, and chocolate. The eyes should be kind and expressive. Appropriate eye colours are brown and hazel. The lining around the eyes should be black. The ears should hang close to the head and be set slightly above the eyes. Jaws: The jaws should be strong and powerful. The muzzle should be of medium length and should not be too tapered. The jaws should hang slightly and curve gracefully back. Body: The body should have a powerful and muscular build. The tail and coat are designated "distinctive [or distinguishing] features" of the Labrador by both the Kennel Club and AKC. If a dog carried wild type alleles at all three loci, the dog will have a yellow coat. If a dog has a loss-of-function mutation at MC1R, it will also have a yellow coat, regardless of their genotype at the other two loci. Within the breed, this trait is not visible. Show and field lines[ edit ] Head and muzzle appearance: field left , and show right , showing the shorter muzzle length, more solid appearance head, and "pronounced" stop of the latter As a result of specialised breeding, there are significant differences between field and trial-bred and show-bred lines of Labradors. In the United States, the former are sometimes mistakenly referred to as "American" and the latter as "English", in fact, both field and show types are bred in both countries and all Labrador Retrievers are descended from British lines. In this experiment, German Shepherds had the highest chance of not completing it. However, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers had a higher success rate after going through longer training than the training required for Labrador Retrievers. For retrieving the Labrador Retriever has a soft mouth , a trait that allows it to carry game and waterfowl without damaging it. It continues in that role today, along with the Leonberger , Newfoundland and Golden Retriever dogs; they are used at the Italian School of Canine Lifeguard. During the Vietnam War they were used as scout dogs to track down dead or wounded soldiers or enemy positions. Notable issues related to health and well-being include inherited disorders and obesity most are missing all or parts of the appetite-regulating POMC gene. As of , it was widely considered the most popular breed in the world. Lab Junior the large yellow English Labrador Retriever weighing pounds "This is Bruno his ears are folded back because he just got done with a big run. He is one of our three dogs. Bruno gets to play daily with a Great Dane and a Lab mix that we also have. I wanted to share some information with you about Bruno because we believe that he has a very special personality. Most people go and pick out a dog based on their playful attitude because if a pup runs up to them they think the pup "chose them" when really it is just probably going to be a more challenging, hyper pup. We know this information now, but we did not know it when we went to get Bruno or when we picked out our first two dogs , however he was the last male puppy left so we did not have a choice. I asked my husband why he thought Bruno was the last male left out of the litter and we later realized it was probably because he did not come leaping and bounding up to the other callers. The people that owned the pups had to go pick him up and bring him to us because he just sat at a distance observing the activity. When we first brought him home he went and sat in the corner all by himself after allowing the other dogs to greet him. We thought it was because he was so young and he was in a new environment. As the weeks passed Bruno was easily housetrained, never chewed anything up , and never "got in our face" for attention as the other dogs that we have liked to do. To this day if he wants attention he will just come and lie at our feet or sit by our side calmly. If we do not acknowledge his presence he will go lie by the door. When we took Bruno for his first set of shots, the vet said that he was extremely calm for a Lab puppy and said that he "was 1 in .We also have a fenced-in yard where they do all the free playing they want to do. Bruno's balanced energy has been a blessing to the entire family. Bruno is a true testimony to Cesar's method of picking the most laid-back puppy in the litter. I rescued her from a high-kill shelter. I took this photo of her shortly after she came to live with me. She has responded really well to training yes, I have used a lot of Cesar's training techniques , and she is a really great jogging companion. Actually, she is a really great companion, period! She loves going for car rides and swims, and curling up into a little ball when she sleeps. She's wonderful; I couldn't have asked for a sweeter girl. They were discovered and adopted by one of the golfers and his wife. People have offered to adopt the pair, but the couple who found them says they cannot give them up now, they are too special. They are doing very well in their training. Luci is very laid back and particular and cautious, and Lori is very outgoing and gregarious and has more of a wild and playful nature. These special little friends are a good example of what can be if you give animals a little TLC.

The Poochon and Shih Poo dogs are smart, happy, and ready to love you to the moon and back. If you're considering adding a new fur baby family member, you're in for a treat. Doodle puppies are simply amazing. They are friendly, loving, and playful dogs that are perfect for families with children. With so many different types of doodle breeds available, one more adorable than the next it can be tough to decide which one is right for you. But don't worry, we're here to help! They are loyal and devoted, have adoring personalities, and are always ready for a cuddle session. Poochon puppies are joyful little fluffs with bouncy paws and wiggly tails. They are lively and happy pups who love to jump around and they are excellent training students. Sturdy and small, Poochons have an average height between 9 to 15 inches and an average weight between 6 and 17 pounds. This mix results in an intelligent, loving, and outgoing dog who enjoys being around people. They enjoy the company of both humans and other animals. They are generally good with children, although they may become overly excited if not properly socialized from an early age. Overall, Bichpoos make wonderful pets for families and individuals alike. The Bichpoo breed tends to have the best traits of both parent breeds. This makes them easy to train for tricks and obedience. They are also low-shedding, making them a good choice for people with allergies. These pups enjoy spending time with their owner and do not like being left alone for long periods of time. They make great companions for family life or individuals who are looking for an affectionate furry friend. Bichpoo Puppies Health Considerations Though generally very healthy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 12 to 14 years — our Bichpoos for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Bichpoo puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. While these conditions can be costly to treat, the good news is that they can often be effectively managed with proper care. Finding a Bichpoo puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. The coat is hypoallergenic and does not shed, making the Bichpoo an ideal choice for people with allergies. Although the coat does not require much maintenance, it is important to brush it regularly to prevent mats and tangles from forming. In addition, the coat should be trimmed every few months to keep it looking its best. Meet Bichpoo Puppies for Sale. It is considered a designer dog breed. The mix originated in Australia and started appearing in the late s. The goal was to breed a low or non-shedding dog that was sturdy and active with a temperament for families with children. The Bich-Poo is charming, affectionate, highly intelligent, and eager to please. They tend to get along well with other pets and with children, which makes them a great fit for families. Bich-Poos are also alert watchdogs. They can be prone to excessive barking, but training and socialization as a puppy can curb this tendency. Although they will alert you as a watchdog, they are more interested in making friends, so will not make a good guard dog. Bich-Poos are highly adaptable. They do well in apartments or larger homes as long as they get enough exercise and fit right in with families with children, other pets, or both. They do well in most climates and, as with most dog breeds, caution should be taken with extreme heat or cold. With this first generation cross, many of the health issues associated with the parent breeds are often not a concern. However, there is always the potential for inherited issues. Some of the potential breed-related health concerns are allergies, patella luxation, and progressive retinal atrophy. Because they are a small dog breed, they are also prone to breaks and fractures if dropped. This designer dog breed tends to be highly intelligent. That, paired with their eagerness to please their owner, makes them quick learners and fairly easy to train. They tend to be a good fit for owners of any experience level. Novice owners may want to enroll in obedience and training classes to ensure training and socialization is going as it should. A professional trainer can also help you put a plan in place to eliminate any potential issues with separation anxiety or the nipping that can become a common fear or anxiety response in small dogs. A Bich-Poo will often have a soft and curly coat. If their coat takes on Poodle properties, then it will be low-shedding and hypoallergenic. Common coat colors are typically light, like white or apricot, but can appear in other colors like tan, brown, black, or gray. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks is also a good idea for a healthy coat. You will also want to trim their nails monthly and clean their eyes and ears regularly. Although small, these dogs are robust and energetic. They tend to have bouts of high energy and require regular exercise throughout the day. Although they are active dogs, moderate levels of exercise will be enough to tire them out. Regular exercise, like daily walks and active playtime, will help immensely when your pup gets a sudden spike of energy and starts racing. Some of their energy bursts can seem endless, but, due to their smaller size, they do tend to tire quickly, so these bouts of energy will likely be on the shorter side. After that, your Bich-Poo will likely be ready for a nap and some cuddles. Keeping your dog well-exercised and engaged is key. A bored dog is one that can become restless and start to whine, chew, or bark. This designer dog breed usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and can weigh between pounds. A Bichpoo will generally live between years. Featured Bich-poo Article. Puppy Breeds The Bichon poo puppy, also known as a Bichpoo or a Poochon, is a designer dog thats aimed at melding the best characteristics of the Poodle with those of the Bichon Frise. The Bichon poo Poochon is typically about a foot high, weighing around 8 to 16 pounds Kgs. Its lifespan is approximately 12 to 15 years. Like any hybrid dogs like Poodle Mixes, Bichon poo temperament and physical characteristics are not as predictable as a purebred, as it may inherit more or less traits from each of its parents breed. Further, if one or both of the parents are not purebred themselves for example, if they both are Bichon poos the variability in the characteristics of the offspring increases significantly. Bichon poo puppies are highly intelligent and this trait makes them easy to train. Bichon poos are dependent on their owners and are very loyal. They are perfect for kids as well as adults. Both the Poodle and the Bichon Frise are active dogs, so your Bichon poo will have a lot of energy. The Bichon poo does very well in a number of environments. But you need to cater for a daily exercise of at least half an hour. Consider abit more exerciseif she does not have access to a backyard. Bichapoo puppies come in a multitude of colors not limited to cream, apricot, black, white, tan. The bichapoo is a mixed breed and because of this the coat can be either straight, wavy or curly. A larger percent of bichapoo puppies have curly coats but other coats are possible as well. Bichapoos are considered hypoallergenic as they are mixed with two hypoallergenic breeds — the bichon frise and the poodle. Look for the bichapoo to become a purebreed in the years to follow. Instead, encourage acceptable chewing by providing proper chew toys for your furry friend to enjoy. As such, you should learn how to stay calm and persistent. Also, you should use positive training methods that include praise, rewards and treats to keep your pooch motivated and to encourage him every step of the way. When training a Bully Basset puppy, it is important to have patience and persistence. You should establish yourself as the pack leader of your pup by starting training when they are still puppies. Also, be firm and consistent when training this dog. Another important thing is to socialize your pooch from an early stage with children and other family pets. While the Bully Basset can be active and playful around young kids, be sure to teach your children how to play with your pup without taunting, teasing or hurting him with rough play. Exercise Requirements Basset Hound Bulldog Mix dogs are quite active and need regular exercises to remain happy and healthy. A proper exercise routine should include daily walks as well as quality playtime with his owner. You can always use interactive dog toys to play with your pup outside. These dogs also enjoy running around in a safe and fenced-in backyard. It is also a good idea to take your pup to the dog park from time to time. Your Bully Basset will be happy with 30 to 45 minutes of daily exercises along with short walks each week. Activities that are recommended for this dog include a game of fetch and tug of war. Remember these dogs have moderate levels of energy, so short to moderate activities are ideal. They enjoy quality playtime, but they will also do well in a home or apartment provided they get regular exercises. When he is shedding, brush his coat with a bristle brush each day to keep it in good condition. Give your Bully Basset puppy a bath as necessary, but do not bath them too frequently as this can make his skin dry. You need to bath your pup no more than twice a month if possible. Lifespan Sociability The Bully Basset is a unique-looking dog, for sure. Owners should commit to daily exercise to keep him fit. The Basset Hound in him brings some undesirable habits like barking and digging to the mix that you must curb early. He also has a tendency to drool. These are all minor points when you consider how outwardly friendly this pooch is. He loves people, a trait the Bully Basset gets from both of his parent breeds. He is also a calmer dog without the overt intensity that marks some dogs. He is a devoted companion that makes an excellent family pet with all of his quirks. The Bully Basset gets a dose of stubbornness from both of his parent breeds. The Bulldog has that name for a reason—his unfortunate past in bullbaiting. The Basset Hound was an independent hunter that pursued game by scent. That accounts for some of his bad canine manners. The Basset Hound and Bloodhound share a common ancestor. The Basset and Bloodhound exceed as scent hunters. They have a sense of smell that takes them places. It turns out there is a good reason that they excel in this sport. Many speculate that the two breeds are descendants of the legendary canine of the hunt, the St. Hubert hounds of France. The Bulldog Club of England is the oldest of its type in the world. Part of the AKC recognition process is the formation of a breed club. The Bulldog has the oldest one ever formed, The Bulldog Club. The membership established it in .It has set the standard for these organizations ever since. The Bulldog has a presidential past. Not many breeds can boast the pedigree of past owners like the Bulldog. Among his following were three presidents, President Warren G. Harding, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and President Calvin Coolidge. He is reasonably intelligent and has a laid-back manner that many will find appealing. He is a dog that can go for the long haul, whether on a walk or romp at the doggie park. Early socialization is a must to preserve his friendly qualities. Are These Dogs Good for Families? However, both parent breeds are kid-friendly. They are good-natured and patient, although they may get vocal when the excitement level rises if the children want to roughhouse with him. The other thing to bear in mind is the strong prey drive of the Basset. This scent hound hunted rabbits and other small game, historically. Researching the parent breeds is a must-do to ensure the beginning of a beautiful friendship. As with most pups, there are good and bad points. There are also things to watch for from a health perspective and with training. It is essential to feed him a diet formulated for medium-sized dogs. The caloric content is more in line with the metabolism of this pouch. We also suggest elevated food bowls , especially if he has the low-hanging ears of the Basset to keep them out of his water. Adjust the amount accordingly. We recommend keeping your pup on a lead at all times because of his high wanderlust potential. You can thank the Basset Hound in him for that trait. He is sometimes stubborn. He is relatively sensitive, making positive reinforcement the best plan of action with this pup. Treats are an excellent training aid and motivator if he needs a reason to stick with the program. Just make sure that the kids know that, too. Think of it as bonding time. The Basset Hound in him will need his ears checked and cleaned regularly. If your Bully Basset has the facial wrinkles of a Bulldog, they will also require attention to avoid skin issues. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals recommends several screenings for both. Minor Conditions. Bullet Description The Bully Basset is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Basset Hound and the Bulldog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. I could not ask for a better mixed breed; very loving and good with children and other animals. He is part English Bulldog part Basset Hound. He is amazing and very affectionate. He loves to swim, run and sleep. We get so many compliments how soft and perfectly marked he is. He is very, very spoiled and runs the house. He just turned two and we have loved every minute of it. I have all of the documentation that shows that his father was a purebred English Bulldog and his mother was a purebred Basset Hound. She is a Bully Basset! I have had many dogs in my life but she is definitely the most entertaining and sweetest! She is always discovering something new to interest her. She is 6 months old in this picture and had been playing all day. When she is ready to sleep she loves to nuzzle and cuddle. When I awake in the morning she nuzzles under my neck, turns with her belly in the air and gets kisses and massaged. She loves everyone. Waffles has long ears like a Basset and is stocky like a Bulldog. He is playful and loving, but does like to chew a bit. He is full grown now and just turned 2 years old. Waffles is about 40 lbs. He is by far the best dog I have ever owned. He is very quick to learn new things, and seems to pick up on everyday phrases fairly easy. Waffles has days where he can run around for hours, and others where he will do nothing but lie around and sleep. Waffles has never demonstrated any form of aggression toward other dogs , cats , children, or adults. I'm not sure where he got it, but Waffles can jump at least 4 feet high, which is odd, considering the breed mix. I have never had to teach Waffles to not chew on things that weren't his. He just always seems to know right from wrong. Waffles has never had any serious health issues. Although, like Basset Hounds, his ears do require regular cleaning. From the moment I got Waffles, he has been a complete joy and I cannot imagine a life without him. I couldn't dream of a better breed mix. Jackson has so much energy, but not very much stamina! He has even learned to open and close his doggy gate all by himself! Jackson, our Bully Basset at 2 months. Fawn, white, brown, black, pied Suitable for: Active families looking for a happy-go-lucky dog Temperament: Affectionate, friendly, independent, outgoing Each parent breed has their quirks. These are a small price to pay for the joy that this pup will bring into your life. Fortunately, the dog loves people and will do their best to please you. There are also health concerns that you need to know about. Our guide will tell you everything that you need to know about inviting a Bully Basset to your home and how to make it a delightful experience for everyone. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. They bring the friendliness of the Bulldog with the patience and loyalty of the Basset Hound. As cute as this pup is, they do bring two concerns to the table that you should consider. The Bulldog, with their short snout, is a brachycephalic breed. These physical features carry added health risks. The Basset Hound is independent to a fault. On the positive side, both breeds are genuinely sweet dogs that will make a welcome addition to your home. The Basset Hound also brings a tendency to drool, which some people may find unpleasant enough to be a deal-breaker. This pup is also quite vocal and seems happy to share their opinion about things. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are patient and calm, which makes them an excellent choice for families with children. The Bulldog is a sweetheart too, but we suggest supervised playtime. Both breeds are friendly and will welcome strangers if properly socialized as a puppy. Socialization is a vital concern with other pets in your household. Bear in mind that the Basset Hound is a hunting dog with a keen sense of smell. A home with small animals is probably not the best fit for a Bully Basset. We suggest closely monitoring time with other pets if just because of the strength and endurance of the two parent breeds. The degree of extra care depends on which one is dominant in certain traits. Knowing these things up front will help you make an informed decision about whether this pet is right for you. Both parent breeds are medium-sized. You should feed your pup food meant for dogs of this size and at the correct life stage. Puppy and adult diets differ in their nutritional content and calorie density. Offering the right one will ensure that your pet gets the nutrients they need. Both parent breeds have a tendency to gain weight. An overweight dog is at risk for other health conditions, particularly those associated with Bulldogs and Basset Hounds. A post shared by Jax jaxthebullybasset You can start your puppy on a feeding schedule of three to four small meals daily, depending on their age and size. You can transition to an adult schedule of two meals a day after your dog reaches 6 months. While the Bulldog is more laidback, the Basset Hound gets high marks for endurance. They are the dog that you want to take on long hikes, since they can keep up with the task. Daily walks are an essential part of raising a Bully Basset. These will keep your pet both physically and mentally fit. Because the Basset was a hunting dog, we recommend keeping your dog on a leash or in a fenced-in yard. Their wanderlust potential is quite high, as you may expect. They will require consistent training, although both parent breeds are intelligent enough to learn tricks and commands quickly. Of course, treats can make your job infinitely easier. You can keep it under control by running a hound glove over their coat a few times a week. Your dog will enjoy the extra attention. The concerns are primarily respiratory, with an increased risk of drowning. Neither parent breed is a water dog. We strongly urge you to buy from breeders who do the recommended pre-breeding health screenings. Since this dog is a hybrid, we suggest asking to see the parents if possible, to get a better idea of how big your puppy may get and a handle on their personality. Minor Conditions. Life Span Did You Know? These dogs are affectionate, loving, and bond closely with their families. They also tend to be outgoing, social, and friendly. Although the Bully Basset is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations. English Bully Bassets tend to have affectionate, charming, and sweet personalities. They tend to be easygoing dogs that are also playful. They tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can have a high prey drive, so will need extra training and socialization with other small pets in the household. They also tend to warm up quickly to strangers as long as they have been properly socialized. With the Basset Hound in the mix, a Bully Basset will have an instinct to howl. You may not be able to stop it completely in all situations, but you can train your dog to stop barking to keep it from becoming a nuisance. Bully Bassets are moderately adaptable dogs. They do well in apartments as well as larger homes. As a brachycephalic breed, they are very sensitive to heat and can also be sensitive to the cold. Because they bond so closely with their families, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. They also should not be let off-leash in open areas. With the Basset Hound nose, a Bully Basset may ignore recall commands in favor of following interesting smells. Potential health concerns to be aware of in an English Bully Basset include patellar luxation , heart issues, tracheal hypoplasia, and glaucoma. Reputable breeders will be screening their dogs to prevent passing issues to puppies, so make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of the parents. Bully Bassets are relatively eager to please and thrive on praise, but they can be stubborn. This can be a challenge for first-time owners to handle alone, so puppy training classes are recommended. Not only do they reinforce training to keep it consistent, but they also help you bond with your puppy and socialize them. An English Bully Basset will have a short coat that sheds moderately year-round. They will need brushing a few times a week and the occasional bath. You will also need to clean their face wrinkles. Nail trimming once or twice monthly keeps nails from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Daily brushing or use of an enzyme toothpaste can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. The Bully Basset has moderate exercise needs. Usually, daily walks and playtime throughout the day are enough. As a brachycephalic dog breed, they are prone to overheating, so you do want to make sure you keep an eye on them. There are plenty of safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs. After all, plenty of brachycephalic breeds compete in dog sports. Breaking up activity into shorter bursts throughout the day is a good way to make sure this dog gets enough exercise without overdoing it. Fully-grown Bully Bassets usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. English Bully Bassets generally live for years on average. You probably already know that learning how to potty train a German Shepherd puppy can be a stressful time. But… once you know these easy steps, great things happen! Knowing how to potty train your German Shepherd is vital to having a happy, comfortable life with them. Use this training consistently to have the most effect. A proactive approach works best. Which means you should… focus on preventing accidents, instead of waiting on them to happen! Follow a strict feeding and bathroom schedule to see the best results. Basically, you teach your German Shepherd puppy the right potty skills… until it becomes a habit humanesociety. The key to quick success is taking your pup out every 2 to 3 hours and never giving the opportunity for them to have an accident inside. This means at least 8 to 10 trips outside every single day! In their welcoming and safe crate either resting, eating their meals, or enjoying a play toy. In an exercise pen or playpen with a strict potty area. Under your direct, undivided attention. This means you are always watching your pup. All it takes is for you to check your phone for a few seconds for your pup to have a toileting accident! You can either use a crate to speed up their potty training or provide them an area indoors to eliminate. I prefer the crate method. Housebreaking with the use of a crate speeds up your success rate incredibly! But you want to use the crate positively so they learn to love their little den. Make their crate an enjoyable and inviting place to go. How to show your pup how to love their crate: Never force your pup into their crate! Take your time with crate introduction and allow them to explore under their own will. Serve your pup at least one meal a day inside their crate. Use a Kong with their meal stuffed inside and mixed with a small spoonful of unsweetened Greek yogurt or peanut butter to entice them to stay and work on the Kong inside the crate. Offer treats when they willingly go inside to rest or explore their crate. Use a verbal cue when you want your pup to go into the crate. You can learn all the benefits of teaching your dog to use their crate in this easy post on crate training your German Shepherd successfully. Check it out to get the complete facts, tips, and step-by-step instructions to perfect crate training today. Use Puppy Pads You can use puppy pads if you need to… or skip to step 4 to learn potty training without pads. Not going to use puppy pads? You can skip to step 4. But… if you prefer to use puppy pads, then you need an area where you always take your dog when they need to go to the bathroom. Preferably place their pads near the door that you eventually want them to use to go outside. Place more pads down than you think you need at first. This is because puppies have poor aim and also may find a spot they prefer other than the one you pick. After a couple of weeks, you may remove the extra pads until there are only two puppy pads on the floor in the primary area they prefer to go. Keep the food and water area away from the puppy pads in another place. Using Puppy Pads Successfully Change your puppy pads as they become soiled. But a lightly soiled pad is attractive to your pup in the beginning stages of training and helps them learn the right area to potty indoors at first. Once they are reliably using the correct spot, you need not continue to use this trick and can throw away the pads as they become too soiled. Training Them to Go Outside After Using Pads Indoors If you set up your pads near the door you use to take them outside to their elimination area, then you can transition them to go outside more easily. So, place or move your puppy pads closer to the door from their original spot to begin the transition to the outdoors. When your pads are close to the door, watch them for their elimination signs and get them to the outside as swiftly as you can. While I generally use a crate to house train my German Shepherd puppy I also totally understand that you might prefer to learn how to potty train a German Shepherd puppy using a puppy pad for any number of reasons. Teach Them a Potty Routine Every day, follow the same routine and schedule to keep your puppy from having accidents inside your house. Teaching your dog to eliminate outside means that you must have a strict schedule. Watch for signs that your pup needs to go potty so you can avoid indoor accidents. Morning Potty Routine First thing in the morning when you let your pup out of their crate or from their sleeping area take them to their potty spot. If in doubt, carry them outside yourself. If you will not leash your pup when you take them out in the morning, then run ahead of them to lead them outside quickly. If you have stairs, carry your pup since rushing downstairs on a full bladder is never a good idea. Outside Potty Routine Stay with your pup until they do their business. You can place your pup in a small confined area to go potty or keep them leashed to you. Stand quietly until they potty. Then, praise them and offer a tasty treat. This can bore you at first, but potty training a German Shepherd puppy becomes easier every day. After 10 to 15 minutes, take them out of their crate and repeat the above process. Learning how to potty train a German Shepherd puppy takes repetition and patience. How do you know when to take your GSD puppy outside to potty? Take them out after a nap. They need to relieve themselves after sleeping or napping in their crates. Take them out after a play session. Take them out after they drink a large amount of water. Take them out first thing in the morning and the last thing before you place them in their crate or go to bed. Take your dog out when their body language says they are searching for a potty spot! You should take out your German Shepherd puppy every 2 hours for an 8-week-old pup. Add an hour for each month your pup is old. So, a week-old dog needs to go out every 3 hours. And a week-old German Shepherd needs to go outside to relieve herself every 4 hours. Puppy Age How often do you take them outside to potty? Most dogs do not have full bladder control until they are six months old. This means that even if your puppy does learn to hold it, accidents may still happen if it is left inside too long. Not potty training early can extend the process and make things harder. As the puppy grows, the mess and smells will increase. It is also harder to break an existing habit than prevent one from starting in the first place. How long on average does it take to potty train a puppy? If everything goes according to plan, your German Shepherd can be potty trained within five days. However, that does not mean your pup will be able to be locked indoors for eight hours while you go to work and not make a mess. Therefore, a two-month-old puppy needs to go out every two hours. A three-month-old can hold for three, and so on. German Shepherds also often have a high play drive and might completely forget that they need to potty when they want to play instead. There are few things more frustrating than playing outside with your puppy for an hour, only to have them calm down enough to relieve themselves the moment they come indoors. Have a complimentary diet An upset stomach is one of the most common setbacks in housetraining. In particular, puppies are vulnerable to garbage gut because they tend to eat anything smelly or exciting. This is another reason to make use of a crate. Excellent digestive health is not only good for your puppy, but it makes it much easier to stick to your routine. Use a specific door By now, you might be noticing a theme of consistency and routine emerging. Taking your puppy out through the same door helps condition and imprint the housetraining process on your dog and will also serve you later when your dog learns to always ask to go outside at the same door. Leash and lead The leash or lead is a further way of conditioning your puppy. The lead ensures that you can keep them close and make sure they always go to the specific spotty to potty. Do some research on the best collar for German Shephards , as there are some breed specific requirements. Then give a treat or some playtime to reward the correct behavior. Guide your dog back inside A potty run needs to be conditioned as a potty run. While praise, playtime, and treats should be used to make it a positive experience, your pup must learn to stay focused on the task at hand. Creating a negative experience for your dog is more likely to cause sneaky behavior such as peeing and pooping secretly out of fear that you will reprimand them if caught. Make sure you check on your puppy at least twice throughout the night Set an alarm clock and check if your puppy is awake and restless at least twice a night. This is your cue to take the pup outside. If the crate is near your bed and you are a light sleeper, you will likely wake when you hear rustling or whimpering. Stick to a routine A rigid routine is the quickest and smoothest route to a house-trained puppy. Be sure to take the puppy outside as soon as it wakes up in the morning, as well as after a nap, after playtime, and after meals. Until they are at least twelve weeks old, they should be taken out a minimum every two hours during the day. Positive Reinforcement As with all dog training, positive reinforcement works best. Make sure to praise and reward within three seconds of your puppy going potty to make a positive association. While your German Shepherd is learning that the entire house is out of bounds for elimination, the crate is a useful tool to avoid accidents. Once this has been achieved, you can gradually allow your puppy more free rein indoors. Pee Pads are not helpful. Final Thoughts You should be pretty patient and persistent in potty training your German Shepherd puppy. The process should not be stressful for your pet. Potty training of a German Shepherd puppy may turn out even simpler and more straightforward than you expect it to be. How to properly organize the process of potty training so that the pet understands as quickly as possible what the owner wants from it? This article may give you some helpful tips. The Main Factors to Consider for Potty Training a German Shepherd Puppy Needs The essential thing your puppy has to understand is that relieving itself inside the house is inappropriate. These are the factors you need to consider making the entire process go smoothly: Nature Newborn puppies pee and poop in their den. These are the first steps that teach a puppy to maintain order in their living quarters. That is why, when you take your pup at the age of 6- 8 weeks , it has nowhere to learn about cleanliness and that it has to do its business outside the den. You have to substitute its natural lessons and become a mother-dog for your puppy. Conditions German Shepherds remember well what they are taught to do and under what conditions they should do that. It means that, as soon as they have learned a habit, they will never forget it under certain circumstances. For instance, if your puppy knows that it should relieve itself on the lawn, you will never see it pooping on the paved driveway. Gastrointestinal Tract Your puppy will need a toilet just minutes after you feed it. That is why, think about feeding your baby dog at the same time and always follow the established routine. Bladder Starting from the age of 20 days, a German Shepherd can control its bodily functions. When it is 8- 16 weeks old , it can restrain from peeing for about 2 hours. So, take it outside for the toilet each hour to be on the safe side. When it is about a year and 4 months old, you can expect it to hold its pee for about 4 hours. Then, this time will increase. Attitudes Your attitude to the puppy matters a lot. German Shepherds understand commands, of course, but they can also get a lot of information from our body language or pitch of voice. When you distract a little one or rush it, it will get too nervous to do its business properly. Verbal encouragement and calmness are very important here. For example, it needs to be relieved after sleep , after feeding, and when it wakes from a daytime nap. It can also want a toilet after playing. The routine will help your baby dog to learn the rules very quickly. Rewarding Every time your puppy goes to the toilet correctly, you have to praise and reward it with some treats. Express your affection, too. A combination of praise and treats will have the best effect. It may even start finding sneaky places to do its business, despite your reaction to it. However, you should do it every time you catch your puppy in the act. Then, you can hold it in your arms and bring to the place that you want to be its potty. Paper of Pee Pads Remember that paper or pee pads are useless or even harmful. Your puppy may get confused, so more accidents may happen. Start with teaching your little pet to go to the toilet outside, and you will never miss the aim. It will not be able to wait until the morning. An accident may happen at night, so try to take your baby dog outside more frequently. Reduced Availability of New Places Inside The more places your puppy has access to inside your house, the more opportunities it will find to go to the toilet there. Reduce access and start more extensive German Shepherd potty training outside at once. Potty runs are not pretty comfortable at this time of the year. What can you do if the temperature is below zero, and it is bitterly cold outside? Your dog may avoid staying longer for doing its business when it is freezing, or just decline your invitation to go outside for a toilet. It may prefer to hold its pee. However, it can lead to bacteria growth and a UTI as a result. In the cold season, dogs as much as humans do not like to drink big amounts of water. However, they need it to prevent a UTI. So, you have to encourage the dog to drink by warming the water and adding some broth, or organic honey to it. Give your dog food rich in moisture. It is canned, raw, or home-cooked food. You may even soak its kibble in the broth. First of all, protect its paws when it stands on the freezing ground. You can use wood shavings or straws, or even pieces of old clothing or turf. They will help your pet step onto the icy cold ground. You will also protect its paws against anti-ice chemicals that are widely used in urban areas in winter. Put on warm clothes when you walk your dog. When you feel cold and uncomfortable, you will not willingly wait until your puppy does its business. You will be eager to rush home, so there is a chance that your puppy will not relieve itself or do it halfway. Offer your doggy a reward for running out in the cold. Show it that you are happy and delighted with its behavior. Some delicious treats will be a perfect sign of it. Avoid Mistakes in Potty Training In any case, you need to know how to avoid the common mistakes in potty training your German Shepherd puppy. Prohibited Methods The prohibited methods for weaning a German Shepherd dog to use places that are not intended for this as a toilet include these things you should never do with your puppy in any case. Never poke its nose into what it has done. It is no use because nothing is disgusting for an animal in its waste products. The dog perceives them solely as a source of information. Physical punishment, for example, beating with a leash, should be completely prohibited. Such actions cannot lead to anything other than anger. Therefore, no canine expert would ever recommend them to you. For example, the dog pooped in the room while its owner was at work. If you punish your pup upon your return in the evening when it has completely forgotten about its misconduct, the dog will not understand what has happened. The unrighteous methods of punishment will evoke aggression and psycho problems in your little doggy, but will not improve the situation. If your baby dog knows that it should not relieve itself inside at once, it will never develop into a bad habit difficult to get rid of. Here are a few simple tips on how to potty train German Shepherd puppies more effectively. Take your puppy out for a potty run via one specific door in the house. When your puppy chooses the same designated point for doing its business, give it a treat. Invite your doggy outside and inside by using a leash. Your puppy needs to learn the rules for your happy relationships and comfort. Moreover, it is learning to trust you as its owner and friend. So you have to build up this trust with consistent and natural tips and commands. Shepherd dogs learn fast, but you have to take good care of them , reward them, and be patient. Be accurate about mistakes that can spoil your training process. Remember that severe punishment is inappropriate. David W. I admire German Shepherds. They are magnificent dogs! I have been dealing with dogs, namely German Shepherds, throughout my life. I have been working part-time as a dog trainer and instructor for about 5 years, dealing mainly with German Shepherds. So I know a bit about these animals. Therefore, I decided to share my knowledge and experience about this fantastic breed. If you need help with advice and care tips or want to know more about German Shepherd dogs, welcome to this blog. Puppies Puppy accidents are inevitable and can also be the most frustrating part of welcoming a new dog into your household. However, with a little bit of patience and the commitment to establishing a routine, you should get your GSD puppy potty trained in no time. This article will dive into how to potty train a German Shepherd puppy as well as give you step-by-step instructions and tips for success. German Shepherds become aware of their ability to control their bodily functions at around 3 weeks old. However, it is best to start potty training as soon as you bring your puppy home, usually, this is around 8 weeks of age. So, a 2-month old can hold their pee for about 2 hours. To avoid accidents, take them for potty breaks once every hour. No, not all adult German Shepherds are potty trained. Nevertheless, the general process of training an adult is pretty much the same as potty training a puppy. The key is in setting your rules and establishing a routine from the beginning. Ideally, choose a relatively quiet place. German Shepherds, like many other dog breeds, are creatures of habit. Having a designated potty area and using it consistently is key to making this process work smoothly. When dogs eliminate, their urine and feces leave behind a unique scent. Smelling it will signal to their brains that it is, indeed, time to go potty. Step 2: Establish a schedule Just like having a consistent potty area, sticking to a regular schedule is essential. Take very young puppies to their designated potty area every hour. As they age and as they become familiar with the routine, you can lengthen the time between their potty breaks. Start by choosing a command and sticking with it. When your pup gets to their potty spot, say your chosen command. Then say your command again and praise your pup as soon as your pup has successfully eliminated. You can usually tell this by their body language. Keep doing that until you can just give the command and your pup knows to squat and poop. Step 4: Reinforce positive potty behavior Whenever your GSD pup potties successfully, give them a good time! Reward them especially when they potty on command. Make sure you give them lots of praises and maybe a good head scratch. Depending on what motivates them, reward them with food or play. Step 5: Give it time and patience Following these steps will give you the best chance of success, but expect it to take some time. Top Tips for Potty Training Success German Shepherds are easy to train , so by following the proper potty training steps, you should get your GSD pup housebroken in no time. Nevertheless, here are some tips that will set you up for success and allow you to get over this tedious phase much more quickly: Tip 1: Make crate training a priority Crate training offers plenty of critical benefits, especially to puppies. Apart from providing a private space where they can feel safe, the right crate can be an excellent housebreaking tool. Tip 2: Establish a routine German Shepherds tend to thrive on a daily routine, so try your best to make every day the same for them. It will also help you more accurately predict when they need to go potty. Try to limit feeding times to three times a day for puppies younger than 6 months. German Shepherds that are at least 6 months old can eat once in the morning and then again in the evening. Tip 4: Withhold water at night Dogs should always have access to clean drinking water, but free access to a water bowl will make potty training more difficult. Once housebroken, your dog can have free access to water. When you take your dog out to potty, try to keep yourself relaxed and only talk when giving the potty command. This will also make your post-potty reward extra special. Disciplining your puppy for a potty accident is likely to do more harm. It will lead to negative potty behavior like being afraid to eliminate in your presence as well as feeling anxiety over having to pee or poop. Just clean it up and hope you can both do better next time. If your dog is having accidents too regularly, you likely need to take your dog out more frequently to prevent it. This is also the best way to maintain proper hygiene and good health. Tip 8: Listen and observe Dogs have their own way of communicating and will be especially communicative when they need to go potty. Some dogs might whine while others paw at the door. You just need to establish a routine and give them time to develop full control over their bladder and bowels. As long as you are committed to following your protocol, you should be able to enjoy a fully housebroken dog soon enough.

Although the Poodle is the national dog of France, they actually originated in Germany over years ago where they were commonly used as a duck hunter. Their curly coat protected them from the elements and they were bred for their excellent swimming skills, high intelligence, and incredible retrieval skills. The Poodle comes in three sizes — Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Throughout history, this dog breed has served many purposes. From living in the lap of luxury as companions to nobility to working out in the field as a valuable hunting companion to entertaining people in circuses around the world, the Poodle is right at home. Although they are more popular as a companion dog, the Poodle still maintains their athleticism and working dog instincts. Poodles are known for their intelligence, cheerful disposition, and sensitive nature. They are versatile dogs that make great family companions. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Due to their sensitive nature, they tend to be a better fit for older children who understand how to approach and interact with a dog appropriately. These dogs prefer peace and harmony in the household, so very young children that are too loud or rough can stress them out. The Standard Poodle also tends to be quite energetic until they are about two years old and may be prone to knock over small children in their excitement. Standard Poodles also tend to make great watchdogs and have some protective instincts. Without proper socialization, they can become skittish, nervous, and wary of strangers. Making sure any puppy is socialized early and often helps them grow into a confident, well-rounded dog. Standard Poodles are highly adaptable dogs. Their energy level tends to make them better-suited for larger homes with room for them to run. But, they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they receive the exercise, mental stimulation, and affection that they need. They tend to do well in most climates. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to very hot and very cold weather. These dogs are in-tune with their owners and thrive on human companionship and affection, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Poodles are a relatively healthy dog breed, but there are some potential health concerns to be aware of. Because of their larger, barrel-chested body type, the Standard Poodle is also at risk for bloat. Responsible breeders will screen and test their stock to ensure the genetic propensity for breed-related conditions is not passed along to the puppies. Poodles are highly intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please their owners. They are highly trainable, pick up things quickly, and are a good fit for owners of any experience level. Because they are sensitive and in-tune with their owners, they respond best to consistent, positive training techniques focused on rewards and praise. Poodle coats are curly or corded and come in a wide variety of colors. Although Poodles are known for their low-shedding, hypoallergenic coats, their coats still require a lot of maintenance. Keeping your Poodle in a short clip can help reduce daily maintenance, but still requires regular professional grooming every four to six weeks to maintain it. A longer coat requires daily brushing in order to prevent matting in addition to professional grooming every four to six weeks. Regular professional grooming often helps with this as nail trimming should be done monthly, at least, to keep nails from growing too long. Dental care for dogs , like brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day, is essential to protecting them from painful dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. You, your dog, and your groomer will thank you for it! Who knows? If you ensure these experiences stay positive, they could even become a bonding time that your dog enjoys. These are high energy dogs that require a good amount of exercise and mental stimulation every day in order to be happy and healthy. The Pug, or Pug Dog, is famous for its flat-faced appearance and large, soulful eyes. They are an ancient dog breed that originated in China over 2, years ago. They were originally developed as a refined pet of Chinese royalty along with the Pekingese and the Shih Tzu. During this time, the Pug was considered a national treasure that outsiders could only access if one was gifted to them. Dutch traders from the s can be credited with bringing the Pug onto the world stage when they brought some back to Europe with them. The Pug made its way to the United States in the s. Now, the Pug is a popular dog breed worldwide. They are a popular companion that provides their owners with plenty of love and laughter from their comedic and playful antics. The Pug is a playful and outgoing dog breed with a charming personality. They tend to be very loving towards children and also get along well with other pets and dogs. They are a companion breed at heart known for their gentle nature and sociable personality. They love to give love and receive it in return. Their sensitive nature makes them intuitive as well and Pugs will often sense the moods of their owners and react accordingly. They crave attention and affection from their owners and are big fans of napping. This dog breed is often described as an ideal house dog and they are moderately adaptable. They will do well in homes of any size, including apartments. The Pug also adapts well to city or country life and are a good fit for singles or families of any size. Although they are highly adaptable to various living situations, they are less adaptable to climates. Pugs are very sensitive to the heat and overexertion, so they are best-suited to moderate climates. They also love to be with their families and will not be happy if left alone for a long time. As with any dog breed, the Pug has some health conditions to be aware of. In particular, corneal ulcers and dry eye are some potential eye problems that can occur. Additionally, Pugs can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and encephalitis. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see health clearances can help allay concerns for some of these health issues. Pugs are also big foodies. They love to eat! Their love for food means this dog breed is prone to obesity. As a brachycephalic dog, their large head and short snout often cause respiratory problems, which can limit their exercise at times and contribute to weight gain. This will cause them to quickly gasp and snort, which can sound relatively alarming. These episodes are usually not harmful as your Pug is just clearing their palate and throat. The Pug tends to be easy to train and is a good fit for owners of any experience level. They are eager to please their owners and tend to pick up on commands quickly. They are sensitive souls and their feelings can be hurt easily, so they will not respond well to harsh corrections. This dog breed responds best to consistent training that focuses on positive rewards and will benefit from participation in puppy training classes. Pugs have a smooth, glossy, and short coat. Their fur is fine and soft. Although their coat is generally low-maintenance, it will shed throughout the year. Aside from brushing, Pugs only need occasional baths on an as-needed basis. Because Pugs have ears that drop down, they can be susceptible to moisture, dirt, or debris. Checking their ears regularly and cleaning as needed helps to keep them healthy and comfortable. The same goes for their iconic face wrinkles. Daily brushing is ideal, but if your Pug is not allowing you to do that, a few times a week should be sufficient. Getting your Pug used to these grooming tasks as a puppy will help make it a positive bonding experience and a much easier process throughout their life. This dog breed has a low to moderate energy level. Generally, daily walks and some play sessions are enough exercise for this dog breed. They may have short bursts of energy as they have a very playful nature, but they will tire easily. Some Pugs can handle a little more activity and even compete in some dogs sports like agility, rally, and obedience. Make sure you check with your vet first before jumping into dog sports with your dog. A full-grown Pug will usually stand 10 to 11 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. This dog breed generally lives for years. The Pug was a popular pet of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Featured Pug Article.

Do they look for the most comfortable cushion they can find, or does your dog flop down anywhere, including the hardwood floor? boxer puppies killeen tx - Boxweiler Highlights Boxweilers are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Boxer or Rottweiler parents The main colors of the Boxweiler coats are fawn, black, brindle, white, and brown. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. These pups have short coats, though they are still moderate shedders. They are not hypoallergenic dogs. Boxweilers need at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. The Boxweiler may prefer to be mostly around adults and older kids who know how to play gently. Boxweilers can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. Boxweiler History The Boxweiler is believed to have been bred sometime in the s by crossing Boxers and Rottweilers together. What we do know is that both the Boxer and Rottweiler breeds have great histories. The ancestors of modern Boxers were used for many tasks, from hunting to guarding and herding cattle. This breed served as messenger dogs in World War I, carrying supplies and acting as guard and attack dogs. Rotties were often used to pull carts and served as guard dogs. Boxweilers are fairly likely to inherit many of the traits that have made their parent breeds so revered throughout history. The Rottweiler was inducted later in .Boxweiler Size As the Boxweiler is a mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to its size. That said, as a mix between Boxer and Rottweiler parents, you can expect the Boxweiler to be on the larger side. Most weigh in at 70 to pounds and range in height from 21 to 27 inches at the shoulder. However, many can be smaller or larger than normal. Boxweiler Personality Boxweilers are very loving and loyal dogs with lively personalities. This usually means they love running around and playing games like fetch with their pet parents. Even with their high energy, they are also affectionate and love to cuddle inside the house with their human counterparts. These large pooches are working dogs and enjoy fulfilling that purpose in one way or another. That means they can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. They will bark or alert their owners at the first sign of trouble. These dogs do best with early training to curb any unwanted bad habits. They can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They also tend to latch on to one family member most of all, though they can get along with others in the house. The Boxweiler may be best suited for larger families with larger homes rather than small apartments. Boxweiler Health The Boxweiler mixed breed is predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Boxer and the Rottweiler also face. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Some of the more common health problems Boxweilers suffer from include: joint dysplasia. Lifespan Sociability The Boxweiler is a very active, high-energy dog whose intelligence allows for relatively easy training as long as it is done with consistency and patience. They enjoy a good cuddle as much as running after a ball and playing fetch. They are healthy dogs overall but having an understanding of some of the conditions that the parent breeds are susceptible to, will help you understand your dog as it ages. While they are not aggressive dogs, they are wary of strangers and other animals, so proper socialization as puppies is essential. The Boxweiler tends to gain weight and needs plenty of exercise. The Boxweiler will only drool depending on which parent it takes after. The Rottweiler tends to drool, whereas the Boxer does not. If the Boxweiler is more alike to the Boxer parent , it is less likely to drool, but if it takes after the Rottweiler parent, it could be a drooler. The Boxweiler may prefer to be the only pet in the household. If the Boxweiler is properly socialized as a puppy with other pets, they will accommodate and adapt well with other animals. However, the Boxweiler is a herding dog and will instinctively chase other animals, and therefore the household might benefit from keeping the Boxweiler as the only pet. If they are kept busy and not left alone for long periods, the Boxweiler will grow into a happy and well-adjusted dog that will make an excellent family pet. However, the Boxweiler would do best with older children that know how to play gently with this large dog. Children should be taught how to approach dogs in a gentle and non-threatening manner so the dog will feel comfortable and become an eager and energetic companion. The Boxweiler more than likely will have the same instincts and therefore, will do best in a home as the only pet. However, if properly socialized as a puppy, they could adapt to living with other pets, including cats. They might have a predisposition to gain weight, so following a strict schedule and not leaving food out throughout the day would work best. Coming from the Rottweiler and the Boxer, which are both working dogs, the Boxweiler needs to be kept busy with walks and play. Allowing these large dogs room to run in a yard makes them less suitable for apartments. Training should be accomplished with persistence and firmness tempered with praise and positive reinforcement. Consistent training and lots of socialization, while they are puppies, is critical. Trimming nails carefully, cleaning ears , and brushing teeth are all common grooming habits every dog needs to keep them healthy. Brushing their teeth regularly to avoid dental issues combined with frequent grooming will also help your dog to maintain its health. Minor Conditions Rottweilers might experience hypothyroidism , lower eyelid droop , cataracts and allergies. While Boxers are also susceptible to hypothyroidism, they are also prone to bowel disease and corneal erosion. Serious Conditions The Rottweiler is prone to hip dysplasia , bone cancer , heart disease and bloat or stomach dilatation. The Boxer might also experience hip dysplasia, heart disease, as well as bloat or stomach dilation like the Rottweiler, but are also susceptible to irregular heartbeat and occasional problems with spinal cord disease and brain tumors. The Boxweiler has the potential to inherit some of these health issues from its parents. Therefore, the vet will check for joint dysplasia, heart disease, bone cancer, and bloat. Male vs Female Most dog breeds have minor physical differences between male and female puppies. Like most species, the females tend to be a little lighter and smaller than the males. It is thought that females tend to be less aggressive and more affectionate than the males, but this subject is up for debate. The choice of using your dog for breeding purposes will make a difference as well between the male and the female. Most dogs become calmer and less aggressive or less energetic after surgery. The primary differences between all dogs, regardless of the sex, are based on how the puppies have been raised and socialized. Final Thoughts on the Boxweiler The Boxweiler is a beautiful, loyal, intelligent, and energetic hybrid of the Rottweiler and Boxer. A firm but kind and gentle hand is the best way to handle these large and sensitive dogs. Properly socializing them to smaller animals and children, while they are puppies, will give them the best possible outcome. Online discussions through social media or attending dog shows and contacting local and national dog clubs could provide you with further assistance. Rottweiler Boxer mix puppies What is a Boxweiler? The Boxweiler is a mixed breed dog with one Rottweiler parent and one Boxer dog parent. They are usually bred as pet dogs, but also have a rich working history on both sides of the family. It is thought to have descended from the Drover dogs of ancient Rome. Here they are thought to have mixed with local breeds such as the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Appenzeller. It was added to the American Kennel Club registry in .The Rottweiler is a working dog, used throughout history for bear hunting, police work, cattle herding, and even to pull carriages for passengers. It is descended from the Tibetan line of Mastiff which in turn was a descendent of the Molossus. A full grown Boxweiler will typically weigh between 60 and 80 pounds — although reaching up to lbs is not unheard of. They are typically happy, healthy pups with an average lifespan of 8 to 13 years. This pup needs daily physical activity and mental stimulation to keep them healthy and happy. Going for regular walks around the neighborhood is a great way to start exercising your pup. No matter your stance on barking, knowing what to expect ahead of time will make life much easier down the line. Drooling Potential Although some breeds are known to be slobbery and prone to frequent or excessive salivating, this hybrid is typically not one of them.
