I've photographed many families along with their beloved dog, often a Golden. I've had numerous Golden Retrievers in my training classes over the years, whether they be reds, English Cremes or the beautiful blonde that we so typically think of when we think of a Golden Retriever. Goldens hail from Scotland originally and are known as a hard-working breed, often employed as service animals and therapy dogs. They're also known for their voracious appetites, young-at-heart personalities and their penchant for carrying things in their mouths particularly when excited. Goldens are intelligent, athletic dogs, and are exceptional competitors in dog sports like obedience, agility, dock diving and more. Golden Retrievers gorgeous coats and perennially smiling face make them a dream to photograph, especially during their little butterball puppy stage. When Moana's that's "mow-ah-nah" dog mom contacted me for cute little puppy pics, of course I said "Yes" right after I squealed with delight and we quickly secured a session on the calendar before she got any bigger! The sun was shining, the flowers were in bloom and Moana romped and played and we caught it all. At the viewing and ordering appointment, Brenda had a hard time narrowing down her favorites because Moana's just that cute, but we eventually got there. She decided on ordering two plush blankets one for her and one for Moana's bed along with a digital negative package which is presented in a handmade reclaimed barn wood box with a metal print on the cover and a 5x7 print of each image inside along with a USB drive with all the high resolution digital image files. This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! You do not need an AKC registration for your dog to be able to have a great pet that you love and that brings joy to your life. You might need an AKC registration for a variety of different dog showing or competition-based experiences, but most people are not looking for a Black Goldendoodle to take to dog shows. How Much Are Black Goldendoodles? The Black Goldendoodle is very popular and there are fewer dogs with this coat pattern than the more common Goldendoodle colors. You might also need to figure out the cost to have your dog delivered to you as there are not many breeders across the country who create a litter of this kind. You might have to plan to drive to go pick up your dog as well. While less common than other coat colors in the Goldendoodle breed, this is still a part-bred dog and one that cannot be AKC registered. This is often a sales tactic and can be a sign that the breeder that you are working with is not scrupulous. Feeding the Black Goldendoodle The Black Goldendoodle will need to be fed in much the same way as any Goldendoodle dog. You should always feed top-quality dog kibble and make sure that your pet is not being exposed to large quantities of grain in their food source. Feeding raw can be an option as well, but you will need to source this kind of dog food just as carefully as you would source the kibble that you feed to your pet. Poodles can have sensitive stomachs, so you will want to avoid lots of treats or wet dog food from a can as well. Red eyes in dogs can happen for number of different reasons. Common causes include allergies, an injury, dry eye or a foreign object in the eye. Sometimes red eyes are no real problem. But others need an immediate trip to the vet. Corneal Ulceration The cornea is the clear membrane over the front of the eye. If your dog gets a foreign body in her eye or manages to scratch the cornea, it can allow a bacterial infection to attack. The bacteria dissolve the cornea as they grow. This is very painful. Note: If you have a Brachycephalic flat-faced breed, her eyes stick out more than is healthy. So Brachy breeds often develop ulcers that are chronic. The symptoms may be less obvious. The eye should return to normal in 12 to 24 hours. If you see these signs, please take your dog to the vet as soon as you can. If your dog swims in the sea or a chlorine pool, that can do the same. This will usually be fairly mild. It should resolve quickly once you move away from the irritant. If your dog develops pannus, he may exhibit the following signs and symptoms: 1. Red, blood-shot eyes. Excessive tearing and weeping. A grayish-pink film covering the eyes. Coloring of the cornea, usually dark brown or black. Opaque cloudiness of the eye. Thickening and loss of color of the third eyelids. Although the disease occurs in both eyes, each eye may be at a different stage of the disease. Fluorescent staining of the eye rules out corneal lacerations and ulcers. A Schirmer Tear Test measures tear production. Testing of the pressure behind the eyeball [Intraocular pressure testing IOP ]. Your veterinarian may also recommend certain blood tests to help determine any underlying issues. These may include: 1. Complete blood count CBC to check for: anemia, inflammation, and infection. Chemistry tests to check: blood sugar levels and liver, kidney, and pancreatic functions. Infectious disease tests, such as those for Lyme disease, Leptospirosis, and Ehrlichiosis. Bacterial cultures. PCR testing. Therapy and Disease Management Unfortunately, there is no cure for pannus at this time. If caught early, the progress of the disease can be suspended and the symptoms can be managed over the long term. However, scarring and discoloration of the cornea usually irreversible. Therapy strategies are implemented to reverse invasion of blood vessels into the corner and to prevent further scarring and pigmentation of the cornea. Types of therapy: 1. Topical immunotherapy - Immunosuppressant drugs, such as tacrolimus or cyclosporine eye drops or eye ointment may improve symptoms. These can be used in coordination with corticosteroid therapy. Radiation therapy - Beta irradiation is a last ditch effort to forestall the progress of the disease. As with any medication, there are potential side effects. Some drug complications to be aware of are: inammation of the conjunctiva conjunctivitis , corneal ulceration, and corneal mineralization, just to name a few. The majority of dogs do very well with topical medications. Some dogs with more severe cases of pannus may need a referral to a licensed veterinary ophthalmologist for more intensive treatments. Long Term Outlook and Prevention Because there is no cure, pannus is managed with symptom therapies. Treatment must be maintain for the life of the dog and is necessary to maintain vision. Limited exposure to ultraviolet light is also recommended for long-term control of the disease. Sheltering your dog while outdoors; walking him in the early morning hours, after dusk, or in shaded areas, and keeping him in your house and out of direct sunlight will help keep the disease in check. Fighting or Rough Play If your dog was in a fight with another dog or another animal, you may find bruising, scratches, or bite marks around his eyes. Because these injuries have a high risk of infection, you should take your dog to the veterinarian the same day. Breeding carrier dogs is perfectly acceptable as long as the breeder is conscience in their mate selection to ensure the mate is ONLY clear for the disease. Labradoodle breeding can become confusing when one is breeding different generations of Labradoodles or backcrossing to a poodle in regards to properly identifying the generation of the resulting puppies. As breeders we are morally obligated to correctly identify the puppies we are producing to our clients so that they are properly informed about the puppy they are receiving. The laws of hybridization in regards to genetics tells us that puppies that are F4 or higher have enough genetic inheritance to be true multigen labradoodles. Crosses of lower generations do not meet these criteria and therefore cannot be labeled as mutligen labradoodles. Multigen labradoodles typically are more expensive as breeders either invest more into their breeding stock if they are starting with multigen labradoodles or they have invested more money AND time if they have started with breeding F1s and worked for several years at least 6 to produce their own line of multigens. Describing generations to clients should be straight forward to avoid confusion. If you are breeding an F3 to an F1 your resulting puppies are then F2, and you advertise them as such. Labeling such a cross as a mutligen is unethical to your clients and unfair to your fellow breeders.
