No dog is ever perfect, just like people are not perfect. It requires work to make things work. Your expectations needs to be realistic. Do you have small children or a baby? Boxers are similar. They need love, attention and an opportunity to learn too. Are you familiar with the breed? If not, you may want to look into fostering with us before making a decision to adopt. Boxers are a highly affectionate breed and very energetic. Do you have the financial means to care for the dog? Annual food and medical cost can add up. Can I adopt a female dog if I already have a female dog? The short answer is no. Our experience in placing dogs, has shown us that placing two females together is oftentimes not the best long term situation. The kids are allowed to hold them now closely monitored and with clean hands and we allow the puppies to run around and explore our large main room in the house. At 5 weeks of age they are starting to run around all over the place when they are let out to play, and, when they are in their kennels, they play sometimes rather roughly with litter mates. It is during this time when some of their adult personalities will start coming out. By the end of this week their puppy teeth are all in, and they love to chew on things, including fingers if you let them. However, even at this age, they will spend most of their time sleeping, probably close to 20 hours per day, with only short times between naps when they are alert and active. By the end of the 6th week they are completely weaned from their moms and eating solid food well. We frequently take them out of their kennels to scamper around. They are full of energy and love to play with their litter-mates and the kids. This is the time that we really focus on socializing them and we even start their paper training. By 7 weeks they have already passed through most of their puppy milestones and are continuing to grow rapidly; they are generally in the 4 to 6 pound range. This is when their personalities really start coming out! It is so fun to watch them play with the kids and their litter-mates and observe their new fascination with toys. They have become somewhat accustomed to going potty on pee pads so that when they are out running around the room they often recognize them on the floor and will go potty on them. Though they are fast, active, playful little puppies at this point in their lives, they still are like babies and require lots of sleep probably over 18 hours per day and are still quite fragile. Blue eyes French bulldogs are rare, but not impossible to find due to the genes that are present in them. The presence of S-locus and M-locus gene gives rise to a wide variety of eye colors in blue French bulldogs. In most cases, it will not, unfortunately, although everyone would like it. However, an exception may occur. The exceptions to the rule are blue Frenchies which can keep the blue and green eye tones into adulthood. As they go through a gradual growth process over the next few weeks, you may see different shades in your puppy's eyes; shades of blue, green-gray to brown, which is their standard eye color. All dogs shed, even the short-haired French Bulldog and because grey Frenchies develop CDA, they can lose more hair than other colors. So, I asked a friend for a ride to the grocery store and posted a sign that I found a stray dog with puppies on the community board with my phone number. Next, I stood in the pet food isle and asked people if they would mind contributing a dollar so I could feed this skinny mommy so she could make milk for her puppies. A mean guy said he would get me a garbage bag to just dump them into. Well, I started balling. When he said that I freaked out that someone could even think that. I felt broken seeing this malnourished dog struggling with her puppies. I saw a person in there, a mom. Needless to say the man felt so bad when he saw me fall to pieces he handed me a twenty dollar bill. As I kept crying I thanked him and got food and some milk. I didn't know then that milk probably wasn't the best for this mommy dog. When I got back to my apartment I snuck the dog in and fed it warm milk and made a home for her and her puppies. No animals were allowed at our complex. Two of the puppies didn't make it and I was devastated. A friend came over and the mommy dog barked and really got protective so I really was getting stressed out about having this dog but I just couldn't put her outside. Luckily, a wonderful, beautiful lady called me that was a rescuer. She understood I was just a poor college student with limited resources. Two days later she arrived to pick up this dog. She said she would have the dog at her ranch until it was in better health then she would find it a home. Around a month later I received photos in the mail. The mommy stray and her three puppies found homes. One other thing, my apartment suddenly had flees and I had very upset roommates.Through this experience I learned a very important lesson, I could do something about another living thing struggling. I may have needed some financial help but all I had to do was ask. It's a fact that working together, placing an ad, asking for a donation, and doing the best I could do was good enough and that work helped get those dogs a home. Miracles happen, they really do. We are on some doodle rescue lists and many vets and shelters have our number. Many of our rescues have come from word of mouth. When we receive a rescue we do quarantine them from our doodles for a minimum of three weeks then do thorough testing for diseases before they come to our home. We typically work with a rescue for three to six months or as long as it takes. Next, is our re-homed doodles. Per our contract, we require all our adopting families, that can no longer care for their doodle, to return them to us for placement. A doodle can be returned for numerous reasons but in most cases that doodle is just too much for their adopting family. As a result, we occasionally have doodles available as re-homes. We always get a second and third opinion from outside trainers and behaviorists with every incoming dog. These evaluations are very informal and are more for the safety of our family and our doodles. We do not provide extensive reports, clinical diagnosis or professional evaluations. Instead, we use all the information we've collected and we work with each doodle until we can see they are ready for their forever home. Each of the doodles we offer are dogs I can and would live with myself. Now, I've been bitten numerous times, I've always had dogs, I've always rescued dogs and I'm quite experienced with dogs. With that said, I do not believe rescues or re-homes are appropriate for families with children and I prefer dogs with questionable pasts to go to families that are experienced with owning a dog. Trilogy, a golden retriever who turned 2 in October, was born without a front leg. A prosthetic, paid for through a fundraising campaign, will strengthen Trilogy's joints and prevent him from tiring as easily, said Maddie Masse, vice president and co-founder of Partners with Paws Service Dogs. Masse started the organization, which trains, places and oversees service dogs primarily in Washington and Ozaukee counties, with her sister, Mya, in .Once he receives his prosthetic, Trilogy will begin training to become a comfort animal. It's part of a long-term goal, Maddie Masse said, to turn Trilogy's difficult life circumstances into an inspiring story for the people he assists. Donations will continue to be accepted and be put toward Trilogy's future medical care. Trilogy will eventually provide comfort at nursing homes, hospitals and Grafton High School While Partners with Paws Service Dogs owns Trilogy, the plan is for Trilogy to permanently live with Brenda Stielow, a family and consumer science teacher at Grafton High School and her college-aged daughter, Erika. The goal, said Masse, is for Trilogy to become a facility dog, which means he will provide comfort, services and skills to an entire facility instead of just a specific person. Stielow said he needs further training before gaining certification as a facility dog, and she and her daughter are still learning what that process is. She said it will consist of learning commands and how to act when at work. While living in a puppy mill, the two-year-old golden retriever had developed an infection that was left to fester. A veterinarian had amputated the leg to save the dog's life. The dog was recovering from surgery and needed immediate care; they traveled to bring her home. On the New2U Facebook page , they ask for suggestions for a name. Hope instead cowered in a quiet corner; she didn't even lie in the cozy dog bed that the Zwitzers had set out for her. While some puppy mill dogs are inquisitive shortly after arriving, Hope would take longer because of the trauma and pain she had endured. According to The Puppy Mill Project , a Chicago-based advocacy group, there are more than 2 million puppies bred in mills each year. The dogs are raised in cages, required by law to be large enough only for the dog to stand up and turn around. When the dogs are no longer profitable — puppies who are too old to sell, females who are past breeding age, dogs who are sick — they are killed. Veterinarians in Ohio have convinced some puppy mills to surrender dogs instead of having them put down. Then rescue groups step in to take the dogs to better environments. The Zwitzers started rescuing dogs in the s and formed their own rescue two years ago. Hope joined the Zwitzers' two dogs — Chase, a golden retriever; and Merlin, an American Eskimo; as well as two other rescue dogs. Jackie, a sweet two-year-old black Lab mix, took an interest in Hope, taking her toys and trying to engage her in play. Hope has come a long way. She will lie contentedly between the Zwitzers in the living room. They will even spot her curled up on the dog bed now and then. The Zwitzers take Hope outside to help her build confidence on three legs — but there have been setbacks. Once, when the dogs were playing, they toppled a bird feeder, and Hope was under it. While Hope was not hurt, it startled her and made her resistant to venturing outdoors. While Hope has bounced back, she is reserved and is unlikely to develop the exuberant, friendly personality you'd expect of a golden retriever, Zwitzer said. First, don't expect to amputate that leg just yet, until you speak with an orthopedic vet surgeon who can evaluate her. She sounds like an ideal candidate for a prosthetic limb. Even if it hasn't occurred to you to look into one for her, it would pay to just get the information so you know what her options are. If you are willing to invest the time and money into prosthetics , it can mean all the difference in her mobility and quality of life over time. As a prosthesis designer once told us, dogs do great on three legs, but they do better on four. So, honestly, it would be a good idea to have her evaluated.
