She shows great potential but would do better if allowed exercise to calm her busy brain before being asked to focus. I think she would be best with older children only. She likes to jump up and lick your face when she is anxious or needs to check back in with you. We are working on correcting that habit but she can't get any exercise right now which doesn't help. She also can be a bit mouthy and she has tried to catch hold of my sleeve not my arm a few times. Surprisingly though, she doesn't bite down on your hand when taking a treat. Your whole hand can end up in her mouth with her exuberance to get the food. But, at least she doesn't bite down on you. She is very food motivated and very food-focused right now. She will try to take food away from my dog so she would do best with a dog that is not food protective. I think she would do fine in a house with other dogs that tolerate teen rough-housing, or in a house without other dogs. She could use the exercise provided by a pack but would be fine if you plan on being that exercise source. She does very well with our routine and knows where she's supposed to be and, most importantly, which meal is supposed to come next. Did I mention she's food fixated? She is not the best gardening buddy. Her favorite thing is to sit right in front of you, right on the dirt you just dug up so you could plant something, sticks her nose in the dirt to check the news, and then tries to give you a kiss right on the mouth. She will help dig though! She is prey driven, however, so she does keep the rabits, birds, and squirrels away from the garden very well. Hard toys only for this pup. She eviscerated a stuffy, grabbed up the pieces and chomped like she was going to swallow them in less than a minute. Fortunately, she is also very distractable with the promise of food of course. We raise our pups using the Tre' Good method, which utilizes nature, language development and positive reinforcement to develop our puppies and young trained adults. Training consists of games we play with our dogs. Our dogs look forward to their training sessions because we employ patience, clarity, and fun to develop a learning drive. But, just as important, we teach our dogs that we will listen to them. We feed our dogs an organic home cooked, grass-fed meat diet. Because we are environmentally conscious, we buy all of our meat from small family farms. We add blended raw vegetables, sweet potatoes, and other superfoods to their diet and our dogs thrive. For years we have watched our dogs forage for food on our land. But it wasn't long after we added our winter location, an old homestead farm, that we actually realized the amount of plant matter dogs naturally add to their diets. On the farm, the dogs forage nuts, fruit, and vegetables from our garden. One day it may be a radish, another day a spaghetti squash, another time it may be a perfectly ripe bell pepper. Once the dog chooses her veggie she parades it around like it was a rabbit. After watching our dogs, we now add a good percentage of vegetables, seeds, and low-glycemic fruits like Acai', Macai, or other berries to our dogs' diets. We are strong supporters of raw and home-cooked foods. But we do feel the focus on a high percentage of protein and just a touch of veggies may be off from the dog's natural diet. We are continually researching K9 nutrition to keep our breeding dogs in peak condition. We believe excellent maternal and paternal nutrition may protect your pup form the heartbreak of hip dysplasia and the ravages of cancer. We believe that the parents' diets and specifically the maternal diet during pregnancy does count in the whole picture of your pup's future health profile. As of Tasha is ten-years-old and is still working full time as a service dog. Pre-made raw food may be an excellent food option but do your research, the addition of extra vegetables may be beneficial. We also use a worm composting system to recycle our dog's waste. They are gentle but need to be treated with respect by all members of the family, including young children, as like any dog their patience will eventually run out. Common health problems in Golden Retrievers Like any purebred dog, Golden Retrievers may encounter some breed-related health problems throughout their lives. Often, Breed Clubs will also be able to provide advice on what tests your breed may need and where to get these done. Make sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening to reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by these upsetting conditions. For Golden Retrievers, this is because they can have short legs in proportion to their body and a tendency to become overweight. Eye problems — screening tests are available and dogs should be screened on a yearly basis, especially if intended for breeding. Multifocal retinal dysplasia - abnormal development and growth of the back of the eye retina which can lead to blindness. Generalised progressive retinal atrophy GPRA — slowly leads to progressive blindness over months or years. Retinal pigment epithelial dystrophy RPED, or central progressive retinal atrophy — a genetic problem which causes issues in the back of the eye retina and loss of vision. Glaucoma — high pressure within the eye causing pain and loss of vision. Ichthyosis — a skin disease that causes thickening of the footpads and makes other areas of skin rough and covered with thick, greasy flakes that stick to the hair. Caring for your Golden Retriever Golden Retrievers are usually real big softies and can make a great addition to a home. How much noise they make will be down to the individual dog. Training and socialisation Golden Retrievers thrive off training and are very intelligent dogs. They love nothing more than to be given tasks to do to keep them occupied and have fairly good problem-solving skills — for a dog! As long as your Retriever is properly socialised from a young age , they should be confident around new people and situations. Retrievers also like their chill out time but will be more than happy to show you plenty of affection on their own terms. Exercise Golden Retrievers are very active dogs and need plenty of opportunities to exercise , play and get rid of excess energy. Your Golden Retriever will need a minimum of two hours of good exercise per day. You can find out how much exercise your dog needs , or even find exercises you can do together. Set-up costs Puppy vaccines — if you rescue a dog, reputable centres will often vaccinate them for you. Remember that ongoing booster vaccinations will be needed to continue their immunity. Neutering — you should usually arrange for your dog to be neutered at around months old, though your vet will be able to advise you exactly when is best. Check prices at your local practice as these will depend on your vet and where you live. Some rescue centres will neuter any dogs they rehome, saving you this cost. Equipment — including a collar and tags, lead, harness, dog beds, dog bowls, pet-safe toothpaste and toothbrushes, grooming brushes and toys. Keep in mind that all these will need to be replaced with wear or damage or if your dog outgrows or damages them! Ongoing costs Food. Preventive healthcare — budget for routine vet visits to help stop your dog getting ill and catch any problems early. They need annual check-ups, vaccinations and regular flea and worming treatments.
