French Bulldog Breathing Problems: Things to Know If you are thinking of owning a French bulldog, then you should be aware of French bulldog breathing problems. The set of their eyes and the reduced muzzle size gives the French bulldog a more human-like appearance. But the face of the French bulldog has not evolved naturally. It has been designed by deliberately breeding together dogs with smaller muzzles. This has caused the French bulldog to experience some very serious health problems. French bulldog breathing problems can range from moderate to severe. The Frenchie is a loud, heavy breather and most French bulldogs snore. Many owners become concerned when they hear their French bulldog breathing heavily, and this may or may not be normal. This is a condition that is common with French bulldogs and other dogs with short airways and scrunched faces. The problem can range from mild to serious with the most serious cases requiring surgery. These dogs have short facial bones but the same amount of facial tissue as a dog with a normal muzzle length. Brachycephalic dogs have narrow nostrils, which leads to French bulldog breathing problems. The nostrils on the French bulldog are barely visible. This makes it hard for them to breathe and they cannot get enough air. Brachycephalic Syndrome is an upper airway abnormality that is commonly seen in flat-faced dogs. The condition can include narrowed nostrils stenotic nares and an elongated soft palate. As a result, the dog suffers from breathing problems and symptoms that include exercise intolerance, noisy breathing, snoring, wheezing and difficulty breathing. All brachycephalic dogs have compromised airways to some degree and many of them suffer severe symptoms. Speak to your veterinarian if your dog is experiencing any symptoms of Brachycephalic Syndrome. There are both surgical and medical treatments to help manage the condition. If a French bulldog requires surgery, it may be very difficult for your veterinarian to intubate your dog because of his physical attributes. When you buy a French bulldog, you should be prepared for the financial and emotional cost of dealing with a breed that has a lot of health issues. Managing mild cases of heavy breathing can be done by keeping your dog at a normal weight and controlling the amount of exercise your dog gets. If it is hot outside, you should keep your Frenchie inside in the cool air. Keep stress to a minimum. Your veterinarian may also recommend medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications or corticosteroids. Oxygen therapy may also be used for short term treatment of dogs who are in respiratory distress. Things to Avoid French bulldog breathing problems can worsen when you do not take the necessary precautions. Do not over-exercise your dog. Too much exercise can cause breathing difficulties as the dog is unable to take in the air it needs. Stick to a short 10 to 15 minute walk each day. If you notice that your dog is having trouble keeping up, or if he seems fatigued, pick him up and carry him home. Avoid walking your French bulldog in heat and humidity. Early morning and evening walks are best. Any exercise that increases the demand for oxygen should not be overdone. The exercise needs of an adult Frenchie and a puppy are quite different. With a puppy, over strenuous walks are unnecessary — and they could possibly harm your pup. As a general rule, walk your French bulldog puppy about two minutes for every month of age. So a three-month-old puppy would walk about six minutes. During the walk, monitor your puppy for signs of fatigue and end the walk if they seem too tired to continue. Keep your dog out of the heat. French bulldogs are prone to overheating and breathing issues that are directly related to the structure of their faces. Brachycephalic dogs like the French bulldog are prone to heatstroke because they cannot take in enough oxygen to keep them cool and refreshed. They have trouble regulating their body temperature effectively. Go for walks in the morning and evening and avoid the hot temperatures during the day. Keep your French bulldog comfortable by keeping him in a cool air-conditioned environment. With Brachycephalic airway syndrome, the bony chamber of the nose is physically smaller but the soft palate that separates the back of the nose from the throat remains the same size. This is like having a curtain that's too long for a window in place. As the dog breathes in, the pressure change tends to suck the soft palate against the entrance to the trachea windpipe , blocking it off. Go to source This causes the French bulldog to choke and gasp for breath. Laryngeal saccules also affect breathing. These are tonsil like tissue located just inside the larynx voice box. Changes in air pressure created by the anatomical changes have the effect of sucking the laryngeal saccules in the way of the trachea, and block it. Also, a hypoplastic trachea impacts breathing. The windpipe of French bulldogs can be much narrower than a normal windpipe. This produces increased resistance to airflow and yet more breathing problems. They will be able to diagnose breathing problems and help you to decide if you're open to the idea of surgery. Assess how bad your dog's breathing is and whether you are willing to change it surgically. Some dogs struggle so hard to breathe that corrective surgery is required to improve their quality of life. It's important to discuss whether or not your dog should get surgery with your dog's veterinarian. Unfortunately, some problems, such as the hypoplastic trachea and a large tongue, cannot be changed with surgery. Under general anesthesia, the vet cuts out a triangle of flesh from the outside border of the nostrils. This will create a larger gap for air to pass through. Go to source The effect of widening the nostrils makes it easier for the dog to breathe through its nose. Under anesthesia, the surgeon assesses how much extra tissue there is at the back of the throat. He or she then trims the soft palate back. Go to source The aim is to resect remove enough so that there is no tissue flapping in the turbulence of the opening to the windpipe. The vet may opt to resect the laryngeal saccules. This surgery removes two obstructions from the crowded space at the back of the throat, allowing more space for air to pass. Go to source Advertisement. Moreover, according to a study by Fasanella et al , French Bulldogs were the fourth most common breed to be affected by brachycephalic airway obstructive syndrome. If left untreated, this condition can lead to exhaustion and abnormal fatigue. In serious cases, it can also cause heart disease. Such dogs are exercise intolerant and are more susceptible to heatstroke. Stenotic Nares Stenotic nares, also known as pinched nostrils, are malformations of nostrils that are either too small or the cartilage in the nose is bent inwards, making it difficult for bulldogs to breathe through them properly. Stenosis can range from mild to severe. This is a genetic defect that is present in brachycephalic breeds, including French Bulldogs. Most dogs can live with it without any health concerns. If the condition is severe and the dog is breathing abnormally, then medical treatment is required. Dogs with stenotic nares can exhibit the following signs. Restlessness Paralysis Soft Palate Elongation Soft palate elongation is a very common abnormality among brachycephalic breeds. It is a congenital issue in which abnormal soft palate tissue is present that obstructs the airway causing difficulty in breathing. It can also be fatal if there is a complete blockage of passage. The following signs are usually observed. Hyperventilation gagging Tracheal Hypoplasia It is a congenital anomaly in which the windpipe trachea is narrower than normal. It can be of varying degrees depending on the diameter of the trachea. If it is mildly narrow, the dog can live a normal healthy life. In severe cases, it can be fatal. Exercise Intolerance and Heat Stroke A French Bulldog, because of its squished-in face, has a compromised respiratory system. It cannot well oxygenate its body, and to counter it, it breathes rapidly, which gives loud sounds. It is because of this that French bulldogs cannot well tolerate exercise stress. The main source of ventilation in dogs is panting, and French Bulldogs, like all other brachycephalic breeds, are not good at it. They can become overheated easily, which can be even fatal for these dogs. Solutions for French Bulldog Breathing Problems French Bulldogs commonly suffer from breathing difficulties ranging from mild to severe — but luckily, there are treatments! Home remedies and preventive measures can provide relief, while seeking professional medical advice is recommended when symptoms worsen. We have explained some here, do read on! Medical Treatments for French Bulldog Breathing Problems The nature of medical treatment depends on the cause of the respiratory problem in French Bulldogs. Some can be controlled by mere medication, while others can require surgical intervention. The prognosis of these treatments is usually good, with high chances of recovery. Surgery It is the treatment of choice if the airway of your dog has been narrowed by other tissues, such as brachycephalic airway syndrome, stenotic nares, and elongated soft palate. The excessive tissue is excised and removed to make the passage clear so your dog can breathe easily. Medications Bulldogs with respiratory issues may need meds , ranging from cough suppressants to bronchodilators, expectorants, and decongestants. Oxygen Therapy During heat stroke or after exercise, if your dog is breathing abnormally or losing consciousness with gums turning blue, there is a possibility that it is facing oxygen deficiency. Oxygen therapy is indicated in this situation in which oxygen is provided to the body. When the body has oxygenated, the severity of stroke is reduced significantly. Home Remedies and Prevention Tips For French Bulldog Breathing Problems Here are some cool tips and management advice that you can follow to reduce and prevent respiratory issues in your dog. Weight Management Overweight dogs are more prone to respiratory issues. The formula contains high-quality protein from real chicken to help maintain muscle mass while promoting healthy weight loss. It is also formulated with natural fiber to aid in digestion and keep your dog feeling full. Frenchies have become wildly popular, thanks in part to celebrities flocking to the breed. Lady Gaga, Taraji P. French Bulldogs also have wonderful personalities and are great dogs for living in small spaces because they don't need a lot of exercises. But there are some known health issues in the breed that include breathing fast. In this article, learn what you need to know if your French Bulldog has started breathing fast and you are not sure what is wrong. But if your Frenchie is in obvious distress, don't wait — call your dog's veterinarian right away! French Bulldog Breathing Fast French Bulldogs breathing fast is a known health concern for short muzzle breeds like the Frenchie, as Vets Now explains. Sometimes fast breathing is a simple case of your dog getting overheated. They will pant because that is a form of canine sweating to help their bodies cool down. But sometimes fast breathing can also mean your dog is anxious. Frenchies are prone to separation anxiety because they get so bonded to their people. And sometimes fast breathing in French Bulldogs is related to their facial structure and anatomy. Their short, cute faces can also mean shorter respiratory passages and narrowed nostrils that make it harder to get enough air in with each breath. Listen to a Veterinarian Talk About French Bulldog Breathing Problems In this short and useful YouTube video , you can hear from an experienced canine veterinarian who is treating a French Bulldog puppy with breathing problems. As you will learn, many of the breathing issues French Bulldogs have are related to their facial anatomy. And some of the problems are fixable with surgery, but since surgery can be pricey it is good to know about these possibilities as early as possible. In the remainder of this article, we will talk about what causes these breathing problems and your options to make sure your Frenchie stays safe and healthy. So let's take a look at the main reasons your Frenchie might start breathing fast. When in doubt, always take your dog to the nearest veterinary emergency room! Brachycephalic muzzle type As dog expert Stanley Coren, Ph. The three main shapes are dolichocephalic long muzzle , mesocephalic medium muzzle , and brachycephalic short muzzle. The French Bulldog has a brachycephalic shape. However, there can be some variation between the three shapes, which means some French Bulldogs may have shorter muzzles than others. The shorter the muzzle, the less room for everything that needs to fit inside, including teeth, nostrils, nasals passages, tonsils, larynx, tongue, palate, eyes — there are a lot of necessary anatomical parts that have to fit in your dog's head! Because of this, sometimes all that extra tissue gets bunched up inside the nostrils, which causes them to be smaller and thinner. That makes it harder to draw air in. This can lead to fast breathing or panting in Frenchies. Obstructive airway syndrome Because of both their short muzzle shape and a co-occurring unrelated genetic issue, French Bulldogs can develop a very serious lifelong genetic health issue called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, or BOAS for short. As Discover Magazine explains, this genetic issue basically means your dog spends their life trying to breathe in all the air they need through the equivalent of a drinking straw. While not all dogs that have BOAS have a short muzzle shape, having the gene that causes BOAS and having a short muzzle can make the health concerns even more worrisome for a Frenchie. Getting overheated Many people don't realize that dogs don't sweat like people sweat. Dogs can't sweat through their skin. They sweat by panting and through their paw pads. As the American Kennel Club AKC explains, French Bulldogs can be unusually challenged to keep cool in hot weather and should be kept indoors during the warm hours of the day. Otherwise, fast breathing may represent a desperate attempt on the part of your dog to stay cool. Getting over-anxious As French Bulldogs of Texas breeder points out, French Bulldogs have a tendency to develop separation anxiety. These dogs just really don't like being left alone! A Frenchie that is expected to self-entertain for hours each day is likely to become very anxious when you leave for yet another long day away from the house. One of the hallmark symptoms of separation anxiety can be panting and fast breathing. Here, context will help you figure out if separation anxiety could be at the root of your French Bulldog's fast breathing. Getting over-excited French Bulldogs are also quite easily able to get themselves worked up to the point where they get over-excited and start breathing fast. Something as simple as you coming home or a new tasty treat could send your Frenchie into a tailspin frenzy of activity, with the end result being a dog that is panting to calm down and cool down. Ignore your dog when you first come home This can be a hard one, especially since you probably missed your pup as much as they missed you! But especially if separation anxiety may be at the root of your dog's fast breathing, you need to help your French Bulldog learn how to greet you in a calm way that is not dangerous to their health. One of the best methods is to simply not act like you coming home is a big deal. Ignore your dog until they calm down and only then greet them. Frenchies are so smart it probably won't take long before your dog catches on and adjusts its behavior. Be careful not to over-exercise or play in hot weather French Bulldogs are very vulnerable to overheating, especially when they are outdoors in the warm season. But since your Frenchie is never going to grasp the need to take it easy, you will have to be the one to moderate your dog's activity level. Limit outdoor activity to cooler hours and make sure your pup isn't playing too vigorously or walking too fast. Sit down and encourage your dog to sit on your lap If your French Bulldog is overheated or over-excited, the best thing you can do is model the behavior you want your dog to adopt. In other words, just sit down and become calm. Your dog will probably want to join you and sit on your lap most French Bulldogs love to do this. Speak gently and softly to your dog and give them pats to ease any anxiety or distress they may be feeling. Talk with your dog's veterinarian about options While no dog owner loves to hear this, for some French Bulldogs a surgical intervention may be what gives them the best quality of life. It is anxiety-producing when a dog cannot breathe fully — for both your dog and for you. In some cases, simply removing some of the extra tissue in the nasal passages may help ease your dog's breathing problems. Your veterinarian may also want to try medications either over-the-counter remedies or prescription medications to keep your dog calmer and quieter before recommending surgery. Talk to your vet and find out what all your different options are so you can make the best decision for your dog. So if your young French Bulldog puppy is already showing signs of chronic fast breathing and other BOAS symptoms, the situation is not likely to improve on its own. You definitely want to get your dog's veterinarian involved from the start to avoid any unpleasant or expensive surprises later on. The very same qualities that can make French Bulldogs such charming and sociable canine companions can also cause health problems for these naturally excitable dogs. While French Bulldogs are not known for having a high energy level in general, they can always find the energy to spend time with their people. This is why, as a Frenchie owner, you will have to make sure you are moderating your own behavior so your dog stays safe and healthy and is able to breathe easily. By watching for signs of distress, you can give your French Bulldog the best life. We are compensated for referring traffic and business to Amazon and other companies linked to this site. This is because they are in a state of relaxation and are not fighting for air. This is normal and part of their growth and development. Puppies will breathe a little faster as they get more active during the night. This is also why they may snore a little bit. Pulmonary Hypertension is a disorder in which the pressure inside the lungs is too high. This makes it difficult for the heart to pump enough blood to the lungs. If you notice any of the following signs, contact your vet: Noticeably labored breathing engaging stomach muscles to help breathe Pale, blue-tinged or brick red gums. If your dog is showing signs of struggling to breathe, including excessive panting, laboured or heavy breathing — the chest and stomach may heave when breathing — then you should begin to worry. If your dog is not able to exercise normally and might have to rest on walks, then they may also be having trouble breathing. If your dog has a blue or grey tinge to their gums a sign of low blood oxygen hen they may also be in trouble. Owners may become concerned when they hear their French bulldog breathing heavily. Breathing heavily may or may not be normal for French bulldogs. French bulldogs with breathing problems may experience moderate to severe symptoms. French bulldogs with breathing problems should be monitored closely by a veterinarian. If French bulldogs have breathing problems, proper treatment may be available. French bulldogs with breathing problems should be kept as healthy as possible. French bulldogs with breathing problems should be monitored by a veterinarian. What Help French Bulldogs Breathe Better Early morning and evening walks are best for French bulldogs because they have a hard time breathing due to their short nose and compromised airways. Exercising that increases the demand for oxygen should not be overdone. Do All Frenchies Have Breathing Problems French bulldogs are a popular breed of dog, but they are known to have breathing problems. This can cause them to have problems breathing, and it can be serious. If you have a French bulldog, it is important to make sure he or she is regularly checked for breathing problems, and if there are any, to get treatment. It is always best to be safe than sorry, so if you see any of the signs above, make sure to take your pup to the vet as soon as possible. It is also important to know that most French Bulldogs do not overheat very often, but if it does happen, you will want to take care of your pet as soon as possible to prevent any serious health problems. Why Do French Bulldogs Hyperventilate French bulldogs are often considered to be one of the most popular breeds of dogs. They are known for their friendly nature, and are often used as service dogs. However, French bulldogs can also be prone to a number of health problems. One of these problems is metabolic acidosis. Among these symptoms are hyperventilation and metabolic acidosis itself. French bulldogs are particularly prone to metabolic acidosis due to a number of factors. These factors include their size, their genetic makeup, and their diet. In particular, French bulldogs are known to be prone to eating a high-calorie diet. This diet can lead to obesity, which in turn can lead to metabolic acidosis. Diabetes also plays a role in metabolic acidosis in French bulldogs. This is because diabetes is a condition in which the body produces too much glucose. Glucose is a type of sugar, and when too much of it is produced, it can lead to metabolic acidosis. There are a number of things that you can do to help prevent metabolic acidosis in your French bulldog. First, you should make sure that your dog is diet is properly balanced. This means that the dog should be eating a mix of protein, carbohydrates, and fat. Second, you should make sure that your dog is exercising regularly. People with this condition have a short nose and flat head, which can cause difficulty breathing. In some cases, the obstruction can also cause the Frenchies to snort and snore. Other causes of snorting and snoring can include an obstruction in the airways, an allergic reaction, or the position the Frenchie is sleeping in. Genetics can also play a role, as can other health issues. While these are all common reasons for Frenchies to snort and snore, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Each Frenchie will experience these noises in a different way, and it is important to consult with a veterinarian if the snoring or snorting is causing problems. This is influenced by many factors, but you can help your dog live a longer life by making a few small changes. Feed them a healthy diet, provide plenty of exercise, and keep them clean and healthy. Most pet owners should expect to pay between a few hundred dollars to one thousand dollars. The surgery is usually done on dogs between the ages of one and seven years old. The surgery is usually successful in correcting the problem and the dog typically recovers quickly. There is a small risk of complications post-surgery, but they are relatively rare. Do French Bulldogs Need Clothes French Bulldogs are known for their short hair, but this does not mean that they do not need clothes. French Bulldogs are prone to hyperthermia and overheating, so it is important to provide them with clothes to protect them from the heat. The most important part of buying French Bulldogs clothes is to make sure they fit well and are comfortable. Post Views: .Shih Tzu dog breed. This condition can affect short nosed cats as well which can lead to moderate or severe respiratory problems. BOAS is not a single health problem, but can manifest in different forms including: Labored breathing Inability to exercise for a sustained period due to reduced oxygen intake Tendency to suffer from heat stroke because of their inability to pant efficiently Brachycephalic dogs suffer from all these conditions because of the shape of their head. These dogs have an elongated soft palate which obstructs the windpipe which is very narrow in brachy dogs, cutting off air supply from the outside. Your Frenchie is particularly vulnerable to the hot weather. It is easy for Frenchies to accidentally overheat, which can quickly turn dangerous leading to serious complications such as heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and death if not immediately addressed. The signs of overheating can be subtle, too, making it especially important for you to stay vigilant in the hotter months. Moderate to severe stenotic nares. A hypoplastic trachea. An everted laryngeal saccules. These anatomical abnormalities make it more difficult for Brachycephalic dogs like the French Bulldog to breathe which can quickly become life-threatening. It is well known that dogs with BOAS are more likely to die during a flight and have been banned by many airlines. Is Boas hereditary in French Bulldogs? This is the reason it is extremely important to find a reputable Frenchie breeder. When it comes to French bulldogs and other dogs with short muzzles, breathing fast immediately triggers concern as it is a known health symptom. But sometimes breathing fast may simply be because your dog is getting hot or over-excited. Frenchies and canines in general will pant and breathe fast because that is a way to help their bodies cool down. Frenchies are also very capable of working themselves up to frenzy and thus have difficulty breathing. Something as simple as seeing your car drive in could get them over-excited and panting for breath. Other times, breathing fast could mean that your dog is anxious. French bulldogs love and crave your attention; hence they are prone to separation anxiety. So, if you leave your dog alone a lot and they see you leaving again, they could begin to get anxious and breathe fast. Many times, breathing fast in French bulldogs is because of their anatomy and facial structure. Their short cute faces mean that they have shorter respiratory passages and narrowed nostrils. This makes it harder for them to get enough air in with each breath. The French bulldog has short facial bones but with the same amount of facial tissue as a dog with normal facial bones. Sometimes, these tissues block the airways so completely that the dog needs to undergo surgery to be able to breathe. This breathing disorder is called Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Disorder. And as a result, the dog could suffer from breathing related issues like exercise intolerance, noisy breathing, snoring, and wheezing. If you suspect that your dog may have breathing problems, watch out for these signs and symptoms. As soon as you notice any of them, do not hesitate to contact your vet immediately. But if you hear noisy breathing that sounds like rasping, snoring or wheezing, your Frenchie may have a breathing problem. The noisier their breathing is, the worse their condition may be. Pay attention to your Frenchie dog during exercise: If your dog seems reluctant to exercise or lags behind on walks, you may want to check on their breathing. If you notice that your French Bulldog is panting heavily with their tongues sticking out, stop exercising for a bit. Their bodies will need more oxygen during exercise and they cannot supply it because drawing in air is laborious. Their gums and tongue may begin to have a blue, gray or purple color, this is due to low blood oxygen. Healthy mouth membranes should appear pink. You may also notice that your French bulldog is drooling. This is because they are concentrating really hard on breathing that they cannot afford to swallow. If your Frenchie has a breathing problem like BOAS, the symptoms become more pronounced and other signs of heatstroke may occur. These symptoms may include heavy panting, glazed eyes, increased pulse, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, excessive drooling, increased body temperature, staggering etc. Overheating or heatstroke can be life threatening, the Frenchie may have seizures, collapse, faint and in some cases, may die. If you notice your dog is overheating, take immediate action while contacting your vet for help. Move your Frenchie to a cool place, tepid sponge them to try and bring the temperature down faster or you can just soak them with water moderately as they can start to feel cold , provide a small amount of water they can drink to re-hydrate. Your vet will consider your dog's breed, physical examination and clinical signs. Visual inspection will be enough for your vet to diagnose Stenotic nares In order to diagnose an elongated soft palate, or everted laryngeal saccules your Frenchie will need to be under anesthesia. Several tests may be conducted to pinpoint any blockage or to determine if surgery is crucial. If your vet does not recommend the BOAS surgery or if your Frenchie is not eligible to get the surgery there are things you can do to help your Frenchie breathe better. Keep your Frenchie out of the heat: French bulldogs cannot stand the heat as they have trouble regulating their body temperature. So, go for walks in the morning and evening to avoid the heat of the day and always keep your Frenchie comfortable and in cool environment. Reduce excitement: If your French is over-excited, the best way to reduce it is to either model a calm behavior for him, that is, sit down, even your breathing and become calm. Your Frenchie will most likely follow suit. Or ignore him until he is calm, only go to him when has calmed down. If you do this repeatedly, he will eventually catch up. Do not over exercise: Too much exercise will cause breathing problems. Reduce your exercise to a short minute walk each day. Do not make your Frenchie exert himself. You can also use a dog carrier or a dog stroller. Avoid leaving your French bulldog alone for long periods of time: Separation anxiety could trigger a breathing attack in Frenchies. If you must leave, make sure you have a monitor that you can check how your French Bulldog is doing when you are not there. Also don't leave for a long periods of time. In the alternative you can get a dog sitter or another Frenchie so they can keep each other company. Speak to your vet about other options. Frenchiestore Health Harness innovated design is the first and only reversible harness with dual D rings in the pet industry for no pull no choke walk which supports your Frenchies' physical and mental well being. Always have your vet on speed dial: To help your Frenchie journey smoother, you need a vet you can trust. Find one that lives close by and is dedicated to your pet's well being. This is when your Frenchie is not considered a puppy anymore and a breathing obstruction will be more apparent. Look at many hospitals and surgeons. Get several surgery consultations until you feel comfortable and confident with the doctor and the facility. Don't be afraid to ask the success rate of the surgeon as well as how many dogs died in their care. This question alone will have a huge impact on the surgeon you'll pick. One thing the surgeon or vet will not tell you is that BOAS surgery is not a fix for life. In time BOAS does come back somewhat. The nose and other parts do close up and resort to the genes of the dog. An an owner of a French Bulldog with a previous diagnosis of BOAS you will never be care free however there are many ways you can help and manage this condition and give your dog the best quality of life possible. BOAS surgery procedure in French Bulldogs Widening your Frenchie's nostrils, Removing the dog's excess tissue of an elongated soft palate Removing everted laryngeal saccules if neccessary. Please ask your surgeon if they plan on prescribing steroids post BOAS operation. Please note: with CO2 surgical lasers in French Bulldogs the above complications are greatly diminished. Risks of Anesthesia in French Bulldogs Due to their compromised airways, brachys face a higher risk of complication due to anesthesia compared to dogs with normal facial physiology. The reason is the dog cannot get enough oxygen during the anesthetic and while trying to wake up from the procedure. Many vets feel jittery to perform surgeries on brachys due to the increased risk of something going wrong during and after the operation. If you own a brachy which needs surgery, make sure the veterinary doctor informs you of the risk involved in the procedure and take necessary precautions. How much does a BOAS surgery cost? Furthermore there may be other charges associated not mentioned above such as cardiovascular assessment and tests prior to the BOAS surgery which may result in additional costs. If you had the pet insurance well before your vets BOAS diagnosis or it is not within the exclusion section treatment should be covered by the pet insurance. If you have any doubt or question you should call your pet insurance and ask in advance. To avoid breeding French bulldogs that highly suffer from BOAS, Frenchie breeders should aim for moderate features like a longer muzzle instead of extremely short or flat. French Bulldogs with the BOAS diagnosis that are eligible for the surgery, should not be bred and removed from the breeding program. The breeder should examine neck girth, body condition, type, nares, genes and more when determining who is eligible to be bred. Regurgitation in French Bulldogs Gagging, vomiting or regurgitating in Frenchies or other brachycephalic breeds all describe their inability to digest food and water properly due to the shape of their head. This is one of the most common symptom of BOAS. The only way dogs release excess body heat is panting. However, brachycephalic dogs have a smaller mouth and inefficient airway, making it difficult for them to dissipate heat. This weakness makes them susceptible to heat stroke. It is important to know heat stroke can lead to death in brachys, which is why such dogs must never be allowed to become overweight. An overweight brachy dog has more fat that traps in heat, increasing the chances of heat stroke. Eye Challenges in French Bulldogs and other brachy dogs Due to the smushed face of brachy dogs, their eyes have limited socket space. Further, the overly exposed eyes of brachycephalic dogs make their eyes dry and irritated frequently. This is one of the reasons a collar is never recommended for daily walks and could potentially be dangerous especially if your Frenchie dog is a puller. If you own a French Bulldog chances are you dealt with eye ulcer at some point in their life. This is a very common injury since they don't have a nose to protect their eyes. How do your vet checks if your dog have a Corneal Ulcer? The following video demonstrates the process of how your vet can check for ulcers in French Bulldogs or other dog breeds. The shape of the skull and nose of these dogs make it difficult for them to breathe effectively and dissipate heat. The result is that brachys tend to overheat quickly, putting them at a higher risk of heatstroke, which can become an emergency. Know the clues that your Frenchie may be overheating: Panting or wheezing Enlarged eyes, ears back, distessed look Excessively floppy tongue Foaming at the mouth or drooling Convulsions and seizures 2 Never Leave Your Brachy Dog Outside Keeping the dog inside will protect them from the high humidity and heat of the outdoors which increases the risk of dehydration and heatstroke. It might be cool and breezy outside, but make sure your brachy dog stays indoors as much as possible during the summer. Try to walk your Frenchie early in the morning, or later in the afternoon, to prevent them from overheating during the peak daytime hours. Also do not let your Frenchie stay in your fenced yard alone outside in the heat. We have heard a tragedy happening this way too many times. Always supervise your dog and if you see any of the warning signs above please be aware that things can decline quickly and you must act fast. Never leave your Frenchie in a hot car Hot cars are death traps for French bulldogs. It is a fact that your car can rapidly climb to a whopping degrees in just a few minutes. Your Frenchie is not able to sweat; instead, they pant to cool down. You can buy a cooling mat at the store or online at relatively affordable prices. Alternatively, you can make a simple cooling mat by freezing water and wrapping the frozen water inside a heavy towel. Place the towel in the canine's bed but make sure it does not touch your dog's skin directly. If you want an inexpensive and effective cooling accessory you can place directly on your dog you can purchase Frenchiestore cooling bandana. These perfect innovative cooling bandanas are compact, small and effective. All you have to do is wet it, wring it and place it on your dog. The cooling light mesh fabric will stay cold for a long time. Frenchiestore cooling bandanas are simple to use and can help keep your Frenchie cool for hours. We have several adorable options from which you can choose. When going out in the heat we recommend placing your cooling bandanas under your Frenchie's Health Harness. Make sure the bandana is placed and covering their whole chest. Keep them comfortable with minimal wear. Our Adjustable Health Harness is a great option for the naked feel. It is like putting a collar on your Frenchie without the risks of a collar. Frenchiestore Strap Harness has a dual d rings for a no choke walk. The same applies to your smushed face pup. During the high heat season, make sure there is always an abundance of cool drinking water in your dog's bowl. A good rule of thumb is to monitor your Frenchies' sounds. If the breathing becomes labored or too noisy, let your Frenchie rest immediately. Remember that the head shape of a brachy dog can make it difficult to breath. Exercise your brachy during the summer, but in moderation. You can reduce the risk of overheating by providing a kid pool to cool down the summer heat. However, the pool must be under a shade and you need to change it whenever it becomes warm or hot. Otherwise, you will end up overheating your French Bulldog instead of cooling them. Offer your dog a shallow pool under supervision off course since Frenchies are known to drown. Offer your French Bulldog water activities A great way to get your dog cooled off fast is by letting your dog play with sprinklers or have a water gun fight. You can quickly wash your dog in cool water if you see any signs of overheating. Never aim the water on the Frenchie's face while panting as this can cause a pneumonia episode. This condition affected our family. The Health Harness inspired and created for Bluenjy has been a life saver for us and many dogs around the world. Dog safe frozen fruit - almost any fruit will do. Bluenjy 's favorite frozen fruit treats are watermelon bites, blueberries, and bananas. Pro Tip: You can freeze bite size pieces on an ice cube tray and top with water to make fun frozen treats that are limited on sugar. Perfect for the high sugar fruit such as bananas, apples and mango. Dog safe frozen vegetables - like broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower provide a great nutritional value plus keep your dog cool. Toppers - if you are used to topping your dog's food with yogurt, tuna broth etc. DIY frozen treats for your Bulldog to help regulate their body temperature We all know French Bulldogs have a hard time regulating their body temperature, this is due to their compacted airway and the way they are built. In a hot day this could be potentially very dangerous for a Frenchie. There are ways we can help our French Bulldogs in the heat. One of our favorite way is simply make them a dogsicle dog popsicle or frozen treats. There are many recipes online, however a general rule of thumb is whatever they like and is edible for dogs you can blend mash freeze and give your dog. You should experiment to see what your Bulldog likes best. Obviously peanut butter is one of their favorite, blend that with some yogurt, freeze and you have a fantastic treat for your dog. Other idea is to blend some yogurt with real fruit. During the hot months you should take away the heavy blankets, pillows and dog beds. You can offer a cooling pad, or a raised ventilated dog bed for your French Bulldog. What should I do if my Frenchie is overheating? If you suspect that your Frenchie is overheating, you need to react quickly, as time is of the essence. Find shade and water. Use your Frenchiestore cooling banana to cool your Frenchie off. Offer your dog water to drink. If water is not available locate the nearest air condition. You can find an air conditioner in every car, building place of business. You don't want them overheating more. If your Frenchie is foaming from the mouth we recommend squeezing a bit of lemon into their mouth. By monitoring your French Bulldog closely, keeping them out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day, and outfitting them in cute but protective! The brachycephalic head shape is due to an inherited defect in the development of the bones of the skull Stockard .The head is of a normal width but the length - especially of the muzzle - is markedly reduced. However, the soft tissues of the head are not similarly reduced in size and have to be squeezed into a smaller shortened space. This affects the passage of air into the lower airways and lungs Harvey .French bulldogs also exhibit other characteristic of an extreme brachycephalic conformation with a pronounced underbite and widely placed, shallow eye orbits. Brachycephalic Airway Obstruction Syndrome BAOS is a result of breeding practices that have selected for a shortened facial appearance. The airways are narrowed in several places due to the shortened facial features and the result is increased airflow resistance, so affected dogs have to use excessive effort to breathe Shell .BAOS is the term given to this collection of anatomical effects, the secondary anatomical changes they cause and the clinical signs that result. The risk of BAOS increases sharply as relative muzzle length shortens and BOAS occurs in dogs whose muzzles comprise less than half their cranial lengths Packer et al .There are a number of congenital present from birth , anatomical abnormalities that form the basis of BAOS and which contribute to the breathing problems: Stenotic Nares abnormally narrow nostrils — This is usually a bilateral condition occurs in both nostrils , and when present, adds to the airway occlusion, increasing the inspiratory effort needed the effort needed to breathe in. This extra effort has a further impact of pulling the soft palate deeper into the larynx the opening to the airway and blocking the airway opening further Shell .Distorted nasal passages are also thought to cause some occlusion of the larynx Hendricks .Elongated soft palate — It is believed that the genetic defect responsible for shortening the nose does not affect the soft tissues of the head, the impact of which means that relatively, there is excess soft palate and tongue at the back of the mouth pharyngeal cavity Venker-van Haagen .In fact, in a dog of the same size with a normal head shape, the soft palate would be the correct length, but in the brachycephalic dog, the overlong soft palate get pushed backwards, partly obstructing the larynx the opening to the airway Hendricks .As part of this inflammation, the soft palate itself becomes swollen and thickened over time, further blocking the airways Shell .Trachea hypoplasia Abnormally narrow windpipe relative to the size of dog —Tracheal hypoplasia is often seen in conjunction with the above abnormalities. Views vary as to how much trachea hypoplasia plays a part in BAOS. It has been suggested that tracheal hypoplasia worsens the prognosis for dogs with BAOS Orsher , Monnet and causes chronic or recurrent lower airway and lung infections Harvey .This is a common cause of laryngeal collapse in brachycephalic breeds according to Venker-van Haagen , though other authors do not to discuss this condition as part of BAOS. Individual dogs with extreme brachycephaly conformation usually have some combination of the above defects Brown and Gregory and most have more than one defect Fasanella et al .These include: Collapse of the larynx - The increased negative pressure created in the pharyngolaryngeal throat region, as a result of the obstructions described above, ultimately results in distortion and collapse of the larynx Wykes .Three stages of laryngeal collapse have been described: In stage I laryngeal collapse, the laryngeal saccules small sac-like structures in the larynx balloon and turn inside out evert. This adds to the airway obstruction. In stage II there is loss of rigidity and medial displacement of the cuneiform processes of the arytenoid cartilage part of the cartilage that form the support structure of the larynx which collapse inwards, and in stage III there is collapse of the corniculate processes of the arytenoid cartilages - this involves further collapse of the laryngeal structures blocking the airway Pink et al .Bronchial collapse. Laryngeal collapse has been found to be significantly associated with bronchial collapse collapse of bronchi — branching airways in the lungs; De Lorenzi et al .Evertion and hypertrophy of the tonsils — Inflammation of the soft tissues in the throat area leads to the tonsils enlarging, adding to the amount of tissue protruding into the pharynx the back of the throat Fasanella et al .Hypertrophy of the pharyngeal muscles — The muscles in the throat become larger and thicker as they are constantly working harder to keep the pharynx open to enable the passage of air into the lungs. However, this hypertrophy of the muscles further narrows the pharyngeal cavity. Gastrointestinal problems: dysphagia, regurgitation, vomiting and acid reflux — Dysphagia is defined by Poncet et al as difficult or painful swallowing. They state that it can be associated with regurgitation bringing up contents of the oesophagus — often saliva in BAOS and vomiting bringing up stomach contents. Dysphagia in brachycephalic dogs has been reported by many authors eg Ducarouge , Dupre and Freiche , Koch and others .Poncet et al also noted many reports of anatomical defects in the gastrointestinal tract of brachycephalic dogs. For example, hiatus hernias where part of the stomach can pass up into the chest through a larger than normal hole in the diaphragm, and pyloric stenosis where the stomach exit is narrowed stopping food leaving the stomach normally. They found a correlation between the severities of BAOS and of the gastrointestinal disease. They postulated that the respiratory diseases affected the severity of gastrointestinal signs and vice versa. Heart Failure — This occurs secondarily to inadequate oxygenation of the blood in the lung, due to the constant airway obstructions. The body detects that the blood is inadequately oxygenated and narrows vasoconstricts the capillaries in parts of the lung that are poorly ventilated. Chronic long term vasoconstriction and increased blood pressure in the lungs increases the blood pressure in the right side of the heart and eventually can lead to right-sided heart failure Monnet .Breathing problems during whelping - Breathing difficulties may affect some brachycephalic bitches during whelping giving birth and may be a reason for elective or emergency caesarean section in these dogs Harvey .Thermoregulation — The normal nose plays an important role in body temperature regulation in the dog. Evaporation from the extensive folded surfaces over the complex mesh of turbinate bones, enables cooling. In brachycephalic dogs, this function is severely disrupted resulting in severe difficulties in coping with heat — whether due to the warmth of the environment or resulting from exercise. As Oechtering states: 'This is why brachycephalic animals are particularly heat-sensitive, why many pant to no avail even at room temperature and without physical effort, and may need several hours to recover even after brief exercise. The primary congenital abnormalities produce signs in puppyhood. The mean age for brachycephalic dogs being presented to vets for treatment of BAOS is 3 to 4 years of age Monnet .Laryngeal collapse is usually associated with older animals Harvey a. Signs in more severe cases include exercise intolerance inability to cope with exercise , mouth breathing, gagging, restlessness, rapid breathing tachypnoea , cyanosis blue coloured membranes of the mouth — due to lack of oxygen in the blood , dysphagia, abnormal posture, and intermittent collapse due to respiratory compromise Shell , Fasanella et al .Vomiting and regurgitation are also frequently seen. Dupre .Flatulence is common due to aerophagia swallowing air; Harvey .Respiratory crises commonly occur in moderate to severely affected individuals, in which the animals rapidly develop respiratory distress — struggling to breathe - and can collapse and die. With laboured breathing, over inflation of the chest is seen Dupre .Dogs with more severe BAOS live a precarious existence and minor aggravations can lead to severe respiratory distress and a crisis Hendricks .Stress, exercise, excitement, all act as aggravators Hendricks , Dupre .These dogs are very prone to heat stroke Hendricks .Hendricks examined sleep disorders in 20 English bulldogs. All dogs over 2 weeks of age exhibited sleep-disordered breathing including pauses in breathing and blood oxygen levels dropping below normal many times per hour. It is likely that this happens in French bulldogs as well. BAOS is a progressive disease. Some of the primary problems, such as stenotic nares and elongated soft palate can be helped with surgery. Surgical treatment is a major intervention but without treatment moderate to severely affected dogs will suffer progressive respiratory distress, incapacity and ultimately death. Some of the secondary problems can also be improved with surgery. However, the outlook for dogs with BAOS depends on which primary and secondary conditions they have at the time of treatment and how advanced they are. Overall prognosis for dogs that have had surgical interventions varies; Reicks et al , in a study of 62 cases in various brachycephalic breeds, reported a favourable outcome for all dogs needing surgery. The prognosis and complexity of the surgery needed also varies depending on the exact characteristics of the disease in each individual dog. Return to top 2. Intensity of welfare impact BAOS has a major welfare impact since it not only reduces general quality of life but puts affected dogs at risk of death through major respiratory distress. Without major surgical treatment these crises can reoccur. Disrupted sleep patterns because of brachycephalic respiratory compromise are probably common. Even those with mild to moderate BAOS are unable to exhibit, what for non-brachycephalic breeds of dogs, is considered normal behaviour such as running and resting comfortably. Return to top 3. Duration of welfare impact This is a life-long disorder, starting in puppies, progressing throughout life and ultimately often shortening life Dupre , with the average age of presentation to vets for treatment, for all brachycephalic breeds, being years of age Monnet .Even with surgical treatment life-expectancy can be compromised with some authors recording death or euthanasia due to BAOS in a relatively high percentage of cases. Return to top 4. Number of animals affected Brown and Gregory suggest most dogs with extreme brachycephalic conformation are affected by upper airway obstruction to some degree. In the study by Fasanella et al French bulldogs were the breed fourth most commonly affected with BAOS after English bulldogs, pugs and Boston terriers. The degree of problem depends on the number and severity of the anatomical abnormalities that are present in any individual dog. Nasopharyngeal turbinates are found in some brachycephalic breeds Ginn et al Laryngeal collapse is common in French bulldogs with BAOS. For small dogs such as French bulldogs to have laryngeal correction is more surgically challenging than in larger dogs Harvey d. Secondary problems are also common. The owners of over half of dogs diagnosed with BOAS at a referral centre stated that their dog did not have breathing problems Packer et al .This normalisation phenomenon may blind owners and veterinarians to the extent of the problem in affected animals and lead to under-reporting and under-diagnosis. Return to top 5. Diagnosis Vets will suspect the syndrome in any brachycephalic dog showing appropriate signs, because it is so common. Diagnosis of stenotic nares can be made on clinical examination, with a definitive diagnosis of elongated soft palate, tonsillar hypertrophy and laryngeal collapse being made on examination under anaesthetic. Diagnoses of tracheal hypoplasia, right sided heart failure and confirmation of elongated palate are made with radiography x-rays under anaesthesia and gastrointestinal complications are investigated and confirmed via endoscopy and biopsies, again under anaesthetic Monnet .Anaesthetics carry substantially increased risks during recovery for BAOS sufferers and most authors only recommend anaesthesia for diagnosis when corrective surgical treatment can also be carried out at the same time, under the same anaesthetic, so that these risks during recovery are reduced. Return to top 6. Genetics Brachycephalic head shape has long been thought to be the result of an inherited defect Stockard .Recently the region of the canine genome associated with brachycephaly has been identified and 2 particular genes have been implicated. The exact gene or gene defects are currently unknown Bannasch et al .This inherited defect defines all brachycephalic breeds and without this defect these breeds would no longer exist in their current form. Return to top 7. How do you know if an animal is a carrier or likely to become affected? As the French bulldog breed is currently defined by its brachycephalic head shape — all French bulldogs are affected by the inherited defect which causes brachycephaly. Most brachycephalic animals have some degree of BAOS Brown and Gregory , so it is extremely difficult to identify a puppy that will be free of this condition. Anyone wishing to obtain a French bulldog should ensure that it and its sire and dam are free of signs of BAOS and that they have not had correction surgery for any of the primary or secondary conditions. Currently, identifying individuals that have had previous surgery is difficult because scars on the nostrils may not be easy to see and the other surgical scars are hidden inside the throat. Because of this problem Harvey had a policy of simultaneous neutering all animals that had corrective surgery. It is not known if other veterinary surgeons have had this policy but it is certainly not universal. Any puppy which shows signs of BAOS should not be purchased; if signs appear after purchase the puppy should be returned to its breeder. Return to top 8. Methods and prospects for elimination of the problem Clear identification and neutering of all dogs which have had surgical interventions seems vital. However, it is the brachycephalic head shape that brings with it the primary anatomical abnormalities that cause BAOS. In recent years, the French Bulldog has experienced a phenomenal surge in popularity The Kennel Club , and the condition is likely to remain prevalent within the breed at present. The practices of Caesarean section and artificial insemination that allow some brachycephalic dogs to reproduce have enabled selection for extreme versions of this defect Bannasch et al .If dogs with signs of BAOS were not bred from the remaining gene pool of animals in this breed is likely to be unsustainable so it appears that outcrosses to non-brachycephalic breeds would be necessary. However, opinions differ as to whether it is ethically acceptable to breed animals whose welfare is likely to be compromised. As Oechtering states: ' It is high time for a radical rethink in brachycephalic breeding. Brachycephaly is a pure manmade disease'. Return to top 9. Cousin to the huskier Bulldog, they were bred in England and made their way over to France as companions and fierce ratters. That bat-eared silhouette makes them instantly recognizable, and 15 million Instagram Frenchie posts prove their enduring popularity. Why do French Bulldogs have breathing problems? All those distinctive sniffles, snuffles, and snorts as endearing as they may be commonly occur in both the canine and feline flat-faced breeds. The shortened snout, which was encouraged during breeding selections to create the adorable smooshed face, resulted in some anatomical limitations. Common problems of this include: abnormally narrow nostrils that restrict air flow stenotic nares the soft, back roof of the mouth is too long and obstructs the airway elongated soft palate a restrictive windpipe hypoplastic trachea sacs along the voice box blocking the trachea everted laryngeal saccules Collectively these respiratory related problems shared by short-muzzled pets are called Brachycephalic Short Head Airway Syndrome. Not every dog presents with all the above. How do you diagnose French Bulldog breathing problems? Symptoms can range from mild to severe, especially if multiple problems exist. The symptoms to watch out for are both visual and auditory. For an easy point of reference, consider known human afflictions such as snorting, gagging, coughing, snoring, apnea, labored respiration, and vomiting. A dog with a very noisy, raspy and rapid respiration rate will make distinct sounds. In short, dogs with cute, squished faces are mouth breathers. In addition, because French Bulldogs are compact, they are more easily affected by high temperatures and problems associated with weight gain. A pet with varying degrees of BAS may collapse after exercise, gag on drool, vomit after eating or even pass out. Some French Bulldogs have large tongues and that can exacerbate the difficulties of a narrow airspace. If you have any concerns or notice episodes getting worse and witness other issues such as collapsing and lethargy, consult with your vet right away. Noisy breathing is common, but not normal. Treatment plans are available to help your furry friend breathe easier and live a long, more energetic life. How do you treat French Bulldog breathing problems? Treatment depends entirely on the severity of the problems present. These little guys are also not heat-tolerant, and the more restricted their airway the quicker they become distressed. Air conditioning, access to cool water, and avoiding high summer heat will go a long way to avoiding fainting episodes due to physical stress, heat stroke, and swollen air passages. Other simple changes such as using a harness around the chest rather than a collar around the neck to avoid pressure on the windpipe can alleviate mild symptoms. Allergic reactions that cause overproduction of mucous or swelling in the throat may be eased by medications or dietary alterations. Surgery is an option for French Bulldogs that have pinched nostrils, elongated palates, or swollen saccules. The outcomes depend on the number of issues present, the age of the animal, and the severity of the situation. Unfortunately, the nature of flat-faces means that such pets are also susceptible to problems with anesthesia. A veterinarian, therefore, will perform a full examination after diagnosis, take x-rays, and assess overall health before forming a plan for the patient. Whether surgery is the route to go depends upon a lot of factors. In some cases, it can make a profound impact on comfort and longevity. Though prognosis will favor a young dog, older animals can still benefit from corrective procedures. The Frankie Harness.
Rescue Me! Grooming Your Mastiff Mixed With Boxer Boxer Mastiffs are easy to groom overall but generally shed in large amounts, which is why you should schedule days that you thoroughly brush their fur. Daily brushing is essential even for your short hair because it eliminates and lessens dirt accumulation as well as hair accumulation in the house. Ear and teeth hygiene should be an everyday priority to avoid dirt and bacterial accumulation in the ears and cavities or tartar, which could lead to infections in the future. Some of the conditions to take note of are: Hip Dysplasia: This is a genetic disease wherein there is an abnormal formation of the hip socket, which causes immense pain for the dog. If left untreated may cause crippling and painful arthritis of the joints. Due to excessive gastric content, the stomach of the dog becomes overstretched. It may cause severe pain when moving. Ectropion: This condition is more common in Mastiffs. The lower eyelids appear droopy due to an abnormality and may result in conjunctivitis or keratitis. Make sure you make arrangements with members of the family to ensure an adequately measured amount of food for your puppy. Choose gifts that have low calories instead, so that obesity is avoidable. The best choice of food would be those that are rich in protein for proper muscle building and repairing. Protein can be obtained through dog food alone, or you could ask your local vet for additional snacks and supplements. You can find protein in meat such as chicken, lamb, fish, and beef. Meat meals are concentrated forms sans the moisture but offer the same amount of protein as well. Fats are essential for eye and brain development because of the rich sources of Omega-3 Fatty acids. Chicken meat and fish oil are excellent sources. Avoid giving your Boxmas foods rich in common allergens such as corn, soy, dairy, wheat, and potatoes. Also refrain from giving any food coloring, as these may compromise the immune system. Never give them table food because it might cause different allergic reactions ranging from skin allergies to difficulty in breathing. To give your Boxer crossed with Mastiff better nutrition, check the following high quality and nutrient-packed dog food available on the market: Fromm Large Breed Puppy Gold Formula: This is a brand that ensures there are no allergens or irritants included. Specially formulated for puppies who are known to grow over fifty pounds, protein and fat levels are moderately incorporated. DHA-rich salmon oil is a bonus for brain and eye development. There are additional vitamins and antioxidants as well as a grain-free formula. Protein and fat levels are lower compared to different brands in the market but still packed with needed nutrients and vitamins to ensure proper growth and development. Royal Canin Boxer Adult Dry Food: This product boasts of high-quality proteins and nutrients, as well as the incorporation of L-carnitine. This combination helps your Mastiff mixed with Boxer maintain its overall built, burn fat efficiently, and avoid obesity. Orijen Puppy Large: The ingredients are fresh and high in protein. It consists of chicken and turkey, as well as fish. Your dog may be big or small, but you need to keep it happy and healthy all the time. Never give them the worst dry dog food that is low in nutrients and filled with by-products, and opt for best dry dog food instead. For the littlest of munchkins, check out our list of best puppy food brands , and for gray-coated, wise grandpa-doggos, opt only for the best senior dry dog food. Your stunning mixed heartthrob carries the genes of their super-gorgeous and incredibly different parents. But that means that you are in luck as you can offer your little charmer both the best dry dog food for small dogs and the best large breed dry dog food. Let them have a final say in which kibble they nibble. In line with the diet, also schedule a daily exercise regimen for your Boxmas. They are highly energetic and exuberant by nature, which means they require at least an hour of intense activities and exercises. This program includes running, walking, playing fetch, obedience exercises, and jogging. Never contain your Boxer crossed with Mastiff in a small space such as apartments or condos. Fulfill their need to stay fit by choosing a home that has adequate running space if you plan to adopt a Boxmas. Another option is to take trips to the park or jog around the neighborhood. If left idle for too long, they can be agitated or easily distracted and tend to destroy or chew on things out of frustration. Here are some toys to help exercise your Boxmas: OxGord BazooK-9 Tennis Ball Launcher Gun: Since your hybrid is energetic and loves running, this tennis ball launcher is a perfect toy when visiting parks or playing in the backyard. Invest in this versatile product so that it also saves you energy from having to throw the ball. It prevents the potential risk for periodontal disease. KONG Wubba Dog Toy: Made of nylon and has two balls inside one chewable and one squeaky , the Wubba dog toy will be a Boxmas favorite because of its durability and appearance. There is no need to continually throw away and replace toys when you purchase this product. Your hybrid will engage in chewing and decrease any risks of periodontal diseases as well. It can be a challenge for most owners because of the intelligence plus energetic combo, but with patience and determination, your hybrid will follow proper orders in no time. Boxers are easy to lead and train. This trait will save you a lot of time and effort. Make sure to familiarize yourself and your pup with play biting and attacking an intruder or stranger. If you can, plan for the whole week instead. It can be a challenge to keep their attention focused on the training, but with perseverance and patience, everything will eventually pay off. Encourage positive reinforcement: Positive reinforcement will always be one of the best and most endorsed strategies to train a dog because it taps into the mental aspect. Your hybrid will automatically think that the specific actions you want your dog to do will earn a treat. Apply this in all tricks and strategies you wish to impart. Another thing to remember is always to have a big space for them to move around when around children to avoid any unwanted accidents. Your hybrid is a large dog and might be prone to crashes if confined in a small space. You can renovate your backyard and put obstacles or toys, or you may visit the park and play with other dogs. But in general, Boxer Mastiffs are very loyal, fun, active, and protective. The temperament from both parent breeds ensures that there is no aggressiveness or violence along with, of course, proper training. Older members of the family can pitch in and help training the big fellow, and this also allows more exposure to different people. This plan will avoid the unwanted one-owner type of dog in the future, as well as agitation and idleness. As an owner, it is your responsibility to ensure a healthy diet, proper living space, frequent trips to the vet, and specific training to help your hybrid live the best years of its life. Should a Boxer Mix take after their Boxer parent, they will be a playful, energetic, and friendly dog that loves their family and loves being active with them. Boxers are known for their energetic and exuberant personalities. They bond closely with their families, tend to have a cheerful disposition, and also tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they are friendly dogs, they do have the instinct to protect their families. If the other parent breed has similar traits, then you should be able to expect a similar temperament in a Boxer Mix. Asking the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix is a good start. You can also meet the mother dog to get a feel for her temperament and to see what behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should be socializing puppies while they have them, it is up to you to continue training and socializing a puppy once you get them home. Boxers are moderately adaptable dogs. Because of their energy, they tend to do better in homes with yards where they can run. But, they can adapt to apartments as long as they get exercise and mental stimulation throughout the day. Although all dogs are sensitive to heat, the Boxer is even more so because of their short snout. And, because they bond so closely with their families, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. The other parent breed could introduce some traits that could affect the adaptability of a Boxer Mix, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. Knowing more about the other parent breed will help you get a better idea of what range of potential characteristics to expect. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? A Boxer Mix can inherit any combination of the potential health issues common to one or both of their parent breeds. Or, they could inherit none of them. From the Boxer side, potential health conditions include degenerative myelopathy, thyroid deficiency, hip dysplasia, and heart conditions. Boxers also tend to have sensitive digestive systems, which often makes them gassy. As a brachycephalic dog, they will also snort and snore. Because they are a barrel-chested breed, they are also at a higher risk for bloat in dogs. This can become dangerous, especially if the stomach flips, so you want to make sure you reduce the risk when you can and know the symptoms so you can get help as soon as possible. Since reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing issues on to puppies, they should be able to answer your questions. Despite their high energy, Boxers are highly trainable dogs that can be a good fit for owners of any experience level. Because they are intelligent, they pick up on things quickly and can get bored easily. But, they are eager to please their owners and tend to respond well to training. The other parent breed could make a Boxer Mix even easier to train or more difficult to train. You want to make sure you ask the breeder about the other parent breed so you know what range of trainability to expect. A Boxer Mix can end up with a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a combination of both of them. Monthly nail trims are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Ears should be dry, clean, and free of debris or pests. Unfortunately, many dog owners overlook dental care, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed. Daily walks plus playtime and other activities should be enough for this dog. However, they will likely be up for more activity if you are. If the other parent breed is also a high-energy dog breed, then you can expect a Boxer Mix to also be a high-energy dog. However, this is a potential range, so you will still need to be prepared to deal with a Boxer Mix that is high-energy. A Boxer usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. The other parent breed can affect this, especially if they are the mother, so you do want to ask about them. A Boxer generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you can likely expect a similar life span in a Boxer Mix. Featured Boxer Mix Article.

Food Quality can affect French Bulldogs appetite. Your Frenchie not eating could be due to food quality, such as the following things: french bulldog not eating and throwing up Food That Has Gone Rotten can affect French Bulldogs appetite Several dogs keep refusing rotten food, which usually occurs when fats inside have broken down due to poor storage or age. High-fat foods are much more susceptible to rancidity than low fatty foods. Little French Dog is a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for sites to earn advertising fees by advertising and linking to Amazon. Fresh Food Your French Bulldog may stop eating food after they have appreciated fresh, tinned, or raw food — undoubtedly due to the additional moisture and aroma that dogs love. These diets mainly raw are very often high in protein, which dogs enjoy. If you were using dog food, try something else with similar ingredients and tastes. Dog Snacks and Treats can affect French Bulldogs appetite Overuse of dog treats is almost sure to make your Frenchie fussier. When French Bulldog gets a lot of treats and experiences all the different types and tastes, they will expect the same thing from their food. Experimentation is probably the only way to see if treats are impacting their appetite. Try limiting the number of treats, switching to reduced-calorie alternatives, or providing treats on a rigid schedule. As you French Bulldog matures, they will tend to become more likely to avoid eating the food for no apparent reason. When your Frenchie seems to be getting bored with their food, change to a new flavor in the very same food or type. For example, switching from a beef-fresh diet to a lamb or chicken food may work. Feeling Stressed can affect French Bulldogs appetite New people and animals introduced into the house can be stressful for your Frenchie, mainly those who are elderly or timid. Evaluate if your Frenchie shows excitement for its food based on its natural environment. French Bulldogs with new, ongoing household shifts usually return to their old eating habits after a week or so. Illness can affect French Bulldogs appetite Reduced appetite in your French is often a symptom of illness, particularly if your French Bulldog has other ailments around the same period. Even though the loss of appetite in dogs may not automatically imply serious illness, timely medical care is essential as it may signify cancer, multiple systemic infections, discomfort, liver disease, and renal failure. Dental Issues can affect French Bulldogs appetite Your Frenchie may not want to eat because something is causing pain in their mouth. They may have a fractured or missing tooth, severe gum disease, and perhaps an oral tumor. Vaccinations can affect French Bulldogs appetite Luckily, vaccines are available for many severe and contagious diseases of dogs. Even though these treatments have saved the lives of millions of animals throughout the years, they often have adverse effects. Most of these are mild and fleeting, like occasional loss of appetite in dogs. Traveling can affect French Bulldogs appetite When your French Bulldogs appetite is okay before you took a trip with them or moved to a different destination, it might be that your Frenchie will not eat due to travel or an unfamiliar environment. Several animals can experience travel sickness, and some may become anxious or uncomfortable in new locations. You can, however, attempt to heat the food a little and then soften the dried food by adding fresh water to see if it makes it much easier to consume and ingest. Within hours, if neither of those things succeeded, you should pay a visit to your vet. These diets are not that tasty for you, Frenchie, mainly if your dog is used to frequent treatments. Alternatively, speak to your vet regarding alternatives. In more extreme cases, your vet may recommend hunger-stimulating medicine, suggest medicine dropper-feeding a liquid diet, or use a feeding tube. Mouth cancers and disease. Splinters or foreign objects in the mouth. The easiest way to tell is using a visual check. To find out what the different bad breath smells can mean, read this guide to Frenchie halitosis. Upset stomach and short illnesses If your French Bulldog is not eating and throwing up then this loss of appetite is inevitably due to a gastrointestinal problem, hopefully short term. Aside from not eating combined with vomiting, the lack of interest in eating food can also include diarrhoea. In cases like this, vets recommend you feed your Frenchie some bland foods to stop upsetting their stomachs further. The go to food for this method is a small amount of boiled chicken with plain rice. Handy Hint: Some Frenchies can reaction badly to chicken and other poultry meats. Medications and vaccinations You might find that your French Bulldog is not eating or drinking after a vet visit or a dose of medication. Many drugs can act as an appetite suppressant and will mean your dog loses appetite and weight during the period the drugs are taken. There can be similar results after puppy vaccinations. Thankfully, medicines and vaccinations only lead to a temporary loss of appetite, and your Frenchie should start eating again once the drugs have passed through their system. Their appetite changes with age We all know of old people who age and start eating considerably less food. Dogs are just the same; as they get older their appetite decreases. They can also develop health and dental problems which make eating harder than it used to be. As Frenchies get older, they can also start to lose the senses that helped make them such ferocious eaters in the first place. For example, if they start to lose their sense of smell, this will make them desire food less. We had to order a different brand and flavour altogether. It had great reviews and feedback and ticked all the boxes for what a nutritious dry food should be. However, Claude the Frenchie refused to eat it for 2 days straight. He was sniffing at the bowl, eating one or two small mouthfuls and leaving the rest. Yep, Frenchies are a very stubborn breed indeed! My wife was really worried about our French Bulldog not eating properly and wanted to start buying him chicken breasts. On the morning of the day 3, he wolfed his breakfast down and since then has eaten this new brand with his usual appetite. My conclusion on this; dogs can be fussy about what they eat. If you are experiencing the same thing with your Frenchie, you can try some of the following hacks to get them to eat properly again with a new food brand. Mix other foods in with the new: This could be some leftovers from the previous foods, or something you know they love to taste like chicken or a broth. Stop feeding them treats and scraps between meals: Frenchies are like kids. Cut the snacks out, and they might stop being so spoiled when mealtime comes around. If they have stopped eating the food, pick the bowl back up and hide it away. Do this at each mealtime, and eventually they will figure out that the food is here to stay once they get hungry. Before you know it, you might have given them so many that they physically cannot eat their main meal. Keep track on what you are feeding them between meals. As a guideline, an average sized adult Frenchie should eat calories each day. Getting food elsewhere A friend of mine lives on a farm that backs onto a large housing estate. Unknown to her, the dog was slipping under a fence twice a day and visiting a dear old lady who lived next to the farm. The morale of the story is this; do you know who is feeding your French Bulldog or whether they have an alternative food source? I am sure you do, but it needs to be discounted if your Frenchie has stopped eating and drinking completely. Serious health issues and pain A more prolonged loss of appetite in your Frenchie is a sign that something more serious is wrong. There are multiple health reasons that lead to a loss of appetite in Frenchies. However, there are signs of a health problem you can look out for in addition to the lack of interest in food, including: Lethargy and lack of energy. Aggressive behaviour. Rapid weight loss. The most important sign here is probably a French Bulldog not eating and lethargic. Vets report that lethargy and a reluctance to move and eat is a reason to get an appointment as soon as you can. Hot weather has a unique effect on dogs and how much they can and want to eat. They are very similar to us in this way. Think about how you are in the summer and winter months; do you eat more in the cold winter, and less in the summer? Let me explain in a little more detail why your French Bulldog is not eating in hot weather, followed by some feeding tips for hotter summer months. Why hot weather leads to a loss in appetite The reasons why we tend to eat lighter foods in the summer season is because we find it a lot harder to digest heavy and fatty foods. Dogs are very much the same as us in this way. This means they will not have as a large an appetite as they would in the winter months. Providing your Frenchie is not ill, and just wants to eat less, then let them guide you with their appetite portions. Try boiling chicken and cutting this into small pieces to add to a smaller portion of dry food or kibble. Feed your Frenchie in a cooler room. If they are still stubborn and refuse to eat in the heat, here are some raw foods you can try feeding to a French Bulldog who has stopped eating in the summer: Veggies that your Frenchie can eat in hot weather I only recommend the advice on the above links as a supplement to their diet, not a complete replacement. Hot summer months can lead to a loss of appetite. We will often give Claude portions of fruit cut up to cool him down. There is guidance in there about using ice cubes and frozen fruits. Our own dog Claude does this a lot. They could be missing breakfast due to: Perhaps not hungry first thing in the morning. If you walk your Frenchie in the morning, the advice is actually to feed them two hours after a walk. You can find out why in this guide I wrote. How do I get my French Bulldog to eat? Try warming up or softening the food with water to make digestion easier. If nothing else works after 48 hours and your Frenchie has still stopped eating, talk with your vet. They could do some of the following treatments: Could run health checks and blood tests to understand why the lack of appetite. Could administer intravenous fluids with electrolytes, particular if they stopped eating and drinking too. Could try feeding them with a syringe or feeding tube. Could treat an illness with antibiotics. Could prescribe appetite boosting drugs. Conclusion Every French Bulldog will go through a period of not eating at some point in their lives. However, time to worry is when the lack of eating is combined with shaking, lethargy, lots of vomiting, and continues past the 2 day mark. This is when you should contact your vet. It can happen to anyone of us that our Frenchie is refusing to eat. This behavior can either indicate that your dog is being picky or a more serious, health-related issue. Why does my Frenchie refuse to eat? To do that, answer the following questions: Is your babe in a constant bad mood? If your answer is yes to any of these questions, you should take your doggy to the vet. But there also might be some other reasons your dog refuses to eat. If any of this is possible, go see your vet. But if your dog is happy and playful like normally, it might be a behavior issue. Making mealtime a fun time for your pet, such as by playing with a toy that dispenses food or rewarding your dog with food for doing a trick. Taking your dog for a walk before mealtime. Medical Conditions When a French Bulldog stops eating, it could be due to a medical condition like kidney or liver disease, dental or oral discomfort, or gastro-intestinal issues. All of these issues can be a serious health concern and should not be taken lightly. They may have had an upset stomach, the food may not be to their liking, or they may be feeling unwell and not feeling up to eating. Make sure to feed them nutrient-packed food that is designed for their particular breed and size. You may even need to switch up the type of food you are giving them, such as from dry to canned or from wet to dry. You may also want to feed them smaller portions a few times throughout the day as opposed to one large meal. This can also be helpful in stimulating their appetite. If it turns out that they are simply feeling unwell and need to boost their appetite then try introducing a new food or supplement to stimulate them. However, if the issue persists and you suspect that it is due to an underlying medical condition, then it is imperative that you take your French Bulldog to the vet for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment. If it turns out that your Frenchie is simply feeling unwell and their appetite needs to be stimulated, then you may need to try switching up their diet or introducing supplements. If the issue persists, however, then it could be due to an underlying medical condition, in which case it is important that you take them to the vet for a proper diagnosis and treatment. Degenerative Myelopathy Von Willebrand Disease Perhaps the most well-known is hip dysplasia, a condition that causes the hip joint to develop abnormally. This can lead to pain and lameness, and eventually requiring surgery. German Shepherds are also at risk for elbow dysplasia, a similar condition that affects the elbow joint. Other common health problems include allergies, intestinal issues, and eye problems. With proper care and diet, however, German Shepherds can live long and healthy lives. Finding a German Shepherd puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. While German Shepherds are often considered to be low-maintenance when it comes to grooming, their coats do require some care and attention. The most important thing to know about German Shepherd coat care is that the breed does not shed uniformly throughout the year. After the shedding period has ended, you can reduce the frequency of brushing to once or twice a week. In addition to regular brushing, German Shepherds also need to be bathed on occasion. How often you need to bathe your German Shepherd will depend on factors such as how often they play outside and whether they have any allergies or skin sensitivities. Generally speaking, however, a once-monthly bath is sufficient for most dogs. German Shepherd Puppies For Sale. We offer 84 German Shepherd puppies for sale in Pennsylvania. Some final words There is a little bit of leeway in their feeding schedule as all standard poodles are not the same. Each individual dog will require different amounts of food at different times of the day. The following information is a guideline as there is no set rule on when or how much to feed your pet each day. Before they are 6 months of age, you can feed your little pet up to 4 to 5 times. After they reach the age of 6 months, you can lower that total to 3 times every day. Just because you serve them multiple times throughout the day, it does not mean their serving size is huge. You are looking at feeding your puppy about 2 cups of dog food each day. This serving size can be equally measured out so that your little feller or gal gets enough food at each meal. It will take a little research to find the perfect food for your pet. If you are in doubt, you can always ask your vet what is the best type of dog food to use. The key to feeding your dog its food is that you cannot change it from week to week or day to day. You must pick one and stick with that brand. Changing the food often and without mixing it with their old dog food will upset their stomachs and cause accidents to happen. If you are worried about the number of calories your puppy is eating, those are listed on the side of the package under the heading kcal. Just look at the number next to that box to get the actual number of calories your dog is receiving. Also, the amount of food you feed your pet depends on how active they are. If they are not very active you can cut their portions down a little bit. This will help avoid your pet from becoming overweight. If he or she is very active, then you should feed them a little bit more food than the recommended amount. Puppy Food Tips There are some guidelines to help you find the right pet food for your puppy. Here are a few of those guidelines to direct your search: 1. Try to Avoid Fillers and Additives- Look for those options that contain more meat and vegetables 2. Grains are Good- Unless your vet recommends against it. Grains help your pet have more energy. Be Heavy on Glucosamine and Chondroitin- These ingredients will help your pet if it has a family history of dysplasia or joint problems. Make Sure the First Ingredient is Meat- The first ingredient tells you that it is the dominant ingredient and the more meat the better for your puppy. Look for Vegetables as Well- These ingredients provide needed nutrients your puppy needs to grow healthy. Provide a Mix- A little wet food on the dry dog food will help your picky eater build their teeth and get needed nutrients. Wet food alone will not do this but it does help with dry dog food consumption. What Foods Not to Feed Your Poodle There are some ingredients you should avoid so that your puppy gets the healthiest meal possible. MSG- It is not good for humans, and it is not good for pets. In fact, not only can it give you a UTI, it can do the same for your dog. Artificial Colors and Preservatives- These are hard to avoid but try if you can. Foods with Animal By-Products- The reason to avoid this ingredient is that you do not know where those by-products came from. Some final words Be careful when you feed your pet. There is always the danger of over-feeding them. If they act like they are always hungry, give them something else to do. They could have just arrived in your home, have a toothache, upset stomach , or they do not like the taste of the food. When you give your pet a bone, there is always a chance that bacteria may be on it. So be careful when raw feeding your pet any food item. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. However, you should keep the intervals between meals similar. Best Dog Foods for Poodles To keep your dog healthy and happy, choose the right food. A feeding guide should include the best food to feed your dog, whether raising a puppy or caring for an older companion. Poodle owners have several choices when it comes to feeding their pets. They can buy commercial dog food, prepare a homemade diet of raw food or raw meat, or opt for a combination of the two as the best food for their pup. Poodle Homemade Food: A homemade diet can provide your dog with all the nutrients it needs, as long as you know what to include in a balanced meal. You can consider giving ingredients like grain-free foods for those with a sensitive stomach. You may also feed a Poodle puppy sweet potato or add cooked meats to their diet. Biologically Appropriate Raw Food Diet BARF : BARF , also known as raw diet or raw feeding, is a type of diet that mainly consists of raw meats, eggs, crushed bones, fruits, vegetables, probiotics, and other natural ingredients. If feeding raw food is done correctly, it can be very healthy for your puppies and adult dogs since it is free from preservatives. Consulting an experienced vet is strongly recommended when looking for the best diet for your Poodle. Sometimes, they get curious too. If you love coffee, keep it out of reach of your Poodle. It contains caffeine , which may cause high blood pressure, stomach upset, and heart problems. Another human food that should not be a part of your puppy food is chocolate. Theobromine , found in chocolate, can cause abnormal heartbeats, seizures , and even death in your puppy or adult dog if consumed. Toy, Mini, and Standard Poodles can also be harmed by gum, peanut butter, and candy containing xylitol. This can cause disorientation , hypoglycemia , seizures, and collapse. Most kinds of toothpaste also contain xylitol, so make sure not to drop any on the floor when you brush your teeth. A small amount can be fatal to your Poodle. Moreover, it is not advised to feed your Poodle avocado or cherries. The pits, skins, and leaves of avocados contain a toxin called persin. It is essential to always check the food label on any treats or ingredients to avoid giving toxic foods to your pets. Additionally, do not feed your puppy too fast and too much as it can result in bloating. You should also consult a vet if you have questions about safe human and puppy foods to ensure they live a long life. Start by adding more of the new food and eliminating some old food at each meal until your pet eats only the new food. This also applies when you switch from puppy to adult food. Written by Sydney Heupel A poodle feeding chart is the perfect tool to help you keep your furry friend healthy and happy! Knowing how much food to give them, what kind of food to feed them, and when they should eat it can be a tough job. As always, discuss the best diet regimen with your vet before making any major changes. Poodle Feeding Requirements Poodle feeding requirements vary based on the size and age of the dog. Smaller Poodles, such as toy or miniature varieties, should be fed smaller meals more frequently throughout the day. Larger Poodles may need larger portions spread out over two or three feedings per day. The same is true for puppies versus adult dogs; puppy portion sizes should be adjusted accordingly. In addition to this, high-quality proteins are essential in order to provide your pup with all the necessary amino acids they need to grow healthy and strong! Omega fatty acids found in fish oils help keep their coat looking shiny and healthy too! Feeding time should always be supervised by an adult so that only designated food items are eaten by your poodle — no human snacks allowed here! How Much to Feed a Poodle Poodles are highly active dogs that require ample amounts of nutrition to stay healthy and happy. Feeding a poodle the correct amount is essential for maintaining their wellbeing. When determining how much to feed your poodle, it is important to consider their age, size, activity level and health condition. Generally speaking puppies should be fed three times per day while adult poodles should have two meals per day. Additionally, if your dog is overweight you may need to reduce their portions slightly. Lastly, always make sure freshwater is readily available for optimal hydration levels! Best Dog Food for Poodles When it comes to selecting the best food for Poodles, there are several important factors to consider. It should provide balanced nutrition with plenty of protein from animal sources and the right amount of healthy fats plus complex carbohydrates. Avoid processed foods with too much sugar or preservatives as these can be unhealthy for your pup. You also need to factor in any existing health conditions like allergies or sensitivities which may require alternative ingredients such as sweet potato or oatmeal instead of grain-based fillers. When preparing homemade meals for your poodle it is important to remember that dogs require certain nutrients in order for them to stay healthy. Animal proteins such as poultry or fish should be included in each meal along with complex carbohydrates like brown rice or barley. Additionally some health experts recommend adding omega fatty acids from sources like salmon oil or flaxseed oil for optimal health benefits. It is equally important to remember that there are items which should never be fed to a poodle including onions, garlic, chocolate and grapes which could cause serious illness if ingested by your pet. Be sure when formulating the recipe you take into account any allergies or dietary restrictions your pup may have before giving them the meal so that you do not unknowingly put their health at risk! Benefits of Proper Nutrition for Poodles Poodles require specific nutrition to reach their maximum potential and stay healthy. Proper nutrition for poodles is essential in order to ensure they have a long and happy life. Proper nutrition also supports cognitive development and keeps their energy levels up throughout the day. Calcium from dairy products or supplements helps maintain joint health while other nutrients like phosphorus support cellular growth in bone tissue. Weight control: Feeding your poodle the right amounts of good quality food will help them maintain a healthy weight which reduces stress on their skeleton due to excess body fat accumulation — especially important for toy breeds such as Poodles who are prone to obesity if not monitored closely! Longer lifespan: Quality dog foods contain ingredients specifically designed to promote longevity by providing all the nourishment needed for a well functioning body systems over time with minimal supplementation required. This means less visits and costs at the vet later down the track! Creating a Balanced Diet Plan for Your Poodle Creating a balanced diet plan for your Poodle is an essential part of keeping them healthy and happy. The best way to achieve this is by understanding the nutritional needs of your pet, as well as the different foods available. Generally speaking though, most poodles should eat two or three meals per day consisting primarily of high quality proteins such as poultry, fish or lean meat along with carbohydrates such as rice or pasta and fresh vegetables. Fruits are also nutritious additions that can be included occasionally in moderation but should never replace any other food groups from their diet. Providing balanced nutrition will give them energy throughout the day while helping them stay fit and active throughout their lifetime! Sample Weekly Meal Plans for Adult and Puppy Poodles Poodles are a highly intelligent and active breed that require plenty of food to stay healthy. Including several meals throughout the day will ensure your adult and puppy poodle is getting enough nutrients for their individual needs. For adult poodles, our recommended weekly meal plan includes two full meals per day, followed by snacks in between if desired. A high-quality protein source should be the main focus of each meal such as chicken or fish. For additional nutrition, consider adding vegetables like kale or carrots along with complex carbohydrates like brown rice or oats. Supplementing with probiotics can also help promote better digestion over time while providing beneficial vitamins and minerals to keep your poodle feeling energetic all week long! As puppies grow quickly into adulthood, they need more frequent feedings than adults do… typically three times a day including breakfast lunch and dinner until they reach twelve months old when they may downsize to twice daily feedings instead. Puppies may also benefit from supplements specifically formulated for growing dogs, but always consult your veterinarian before starting any supplementation regimen with your pup! At the end of the day, proper nutrition is key when it comes to keeping both adult and puppy Poodles healthy, so creating weekly meal plans that include variety helps ensure their nutritional needs are met every single week! This is because standard poodles can sometimes be picky eaters. If a picky eater knows that food is always available, the picky eater will even be pickier. However, if your standard poodle knows that his or her food is available at particular times of the day, then your standard poodle will be motivated to eat his or her food on a schedule. Bloat occurs when the stomach of a standard poodle accidentally twists. Bloat, when it occurs, escalates really fast and it can kill a standard poodle in less than one hour. Another way to prevent your standard poodle from developing bloat is not to feed them immediately after they exercise rigorously. Wait for an hour after your poodle exercises before giving your poodle food. Also, do not let your standard poodle drink too much water before or after food. Feeding a Poodle Overview Ensuring that your Poodle is on a well-balanced diet is one of the most important elements to keeping your canine family member healthy, both now and into the future. This section will cover all Poodle feeding guidelines including how often to feed a Poodle, serving sizes, dry vs wet, grain vs grain-free, and top recommended kibble. Don't need all of the details and just want to know which brands are recommended? New Puppies - The Importance of Gradually Switching Foods Before you even bring your Poodle home, it is very important to discuss with the breeder or shelter worker if you are adopting a rescue exactly which brand of food they have been feeding to your Poodle. A fast change in food can cause upset stomach and digestive problems. Breeders and shelters are buying food in bulk and have to feed many dogs which is a factor in which brand they choose; so there is a good chance that you will want to offer your Poodle something different. Have both the current food and the new food on hand and make a gradual switch over the course of 3 weeks. Though you will be leaving food out at all times, it is important that the food is fresh. Do not just top it off throughout the day, rinse and clean the bowl as necessary so that old food is not stuck at the bottom of the dish. Puppy: Starting at just about the 3 month mark, Poodles of all varieties should be eating 3 meals per day, plus snacks. Adult: When a pup matures into an adult, this does not necessarily mean that they should suddenly be given only one meal a day. Smaller dogs such as Toy Poodles and Miniatures often do best with 2 or even 3 meals per day. Standards have a bit more tolerance to a single dinnertime feeding, however many can also benefit from having food split up into two servings. Several snacks can be given in between meals and this is particularly helpful is a Poodle is a fast eater. How Much to Feed a Poodle Exact serving size varies quite a bit depending on the type of food. There is a big difference in calories between wet vs dry and low quality vs high quality. And, the amount of food that a Poodle should be eating depends on the dog's age, activity level, individual metabolism, and health status. Even the weather can play a role since dogs tend to eat a bit more in the winter and a bit less in the summer. In regard to calorie requirements, puppies need more calories per pound than their adult counterparts, approximately 40 to 55 calories per pound, daily, compared to adult dogs that need about 35 to 45 calories per pound, daily. S enior Poodles typically have slower metabolisms and reduced mobility and therefore usually require slightly fewer calories, in the 40 calorie per pound range. If you are feeding your Poodle a commercial food, follow the suggested feeding guidelines. These are usually pretty spot-on. Since these are based on both age and weight, do not estimate how much your Poodle weighs but rather know what this is within a pound or two. If you are feeding your Poodle homemade food, a rough guideline for serving size is 1 ounce of food for each 1 pound of body weight, daily. As you can imagine, this can vary quite a bit depending on the exact ingredients. Using the 1 to 1 rule as a starting point, what your Poodle consumes within 15 minutes is usually a good amount for each meal. Wet vs Dry If a Poodle had their way, most would opt for wet food. However, dry food is recommended since this is much better for the gums and teeth. In addition, dry kibble tends to be easier on the stomach and intestines and a diet of all wet canned food can lead to runny stools. Grain vs Grain-free Until relatively recently, there was not much debate on this subject; if a dog tended to have gastrointestinal or allergy issues when on a diet with grains, they were switched to a grain-free recipe. However, this changed when it was discovered that several dogs that were breeds not prone to dilated cardiomyopathy developed that particular heart disease and also happened to be fed grain-free kibble. Lots of pet parents immediately thought that they needed to change their dogs back to grains; however, many more studies need to be done. In fact, the most recent update from the Veterinary Medical Center at Tufts University suggests that 'grain-free' alone may not be the issue at play. For now, it is theorized that a certain diet dubbed a BEG diet may be to blame. This stands for boutique small local brands with exotic meats non-traditional meats like alligator, bison, ostrich, venison, and kangaroo and grain-free along with peas, legumes, or potatoes as one of the top 5 ingredients. Currently there are no recalls of grain-free dog food brands and the FDA is still investigating any possible links including the BEG theory. If your Poodle does not do well with any grains at all, you may wish to stick to a brand that has traditional meats like chicken, turkey, or beef or a fish-based recipes. And, if you are not sure about which grains your Poodle may do okay with, you may wish to opt for wholesome non-wheat and non-gluten grains like rice brown or white , oatmeal, quinoa which is technically a seed. Exact recommendations for the best foods include both grain and grain-free options. Elements to Keep in Mind When Choosing Food for Your Poodle What to avoid: It's no wonder that pet parents have a difficult time navigating the many choices of dog foods in their quest to find the best brand to give their Poodle, there are a lot of ingredients to avoid: Artificial flavoring like MSG which can cause terrible allergic reactions. This can, by law, be any species of animal whatsoever and are usually 4-D animal parts: Sourced from dead, diseased, dying, or disabled zoo animals, farm animals, or even roadkill. These are very common in cheaper subpar brands and are inexpensive ingredients that are added only to plump up the food but offer little to no nutritional value. Examples of fillers include corn, soy, wheat middlings, peanut hulls, oat husks, and cereal grains. Ingestion of fillers is a contributing factor in coprophagia eating feces and is linked to malnutrition. High grain count. Though some wholesome grains may be desired next section , high levels of wheat or gluten can cause upset stomach issues and allergies. Every ingredient should serve the purpose of providing nutrients and never added simply to bulk up the recipe. The right balance of healthy grains. They may also learn how to walk for the first time so be sure to place their food or drink bowl within short distances. However, not all puppies are the same and it depends on various factors. As with all puppies, your Standard Poodle pup should be dewormed and vaccinated during this period. After the weaning process has finished, they can be separated from their mother and sent off to a new home. Socialization is, therefore, crucial in this period to avoid behavioral problems. They might need obedience training and they also need a proper schedule for feeding to avoid obesity and begging behaviors. Keep in mind, though, that this might also result in the puppy eating much more than they did before. Ready some stock food! They might not play around as much when compared to their puppy days. Recommended Food Are you having trouble with choosing the right food for your Spoo pup? Look for these as the first ingredient of your Standard Poodle puppy food. In the wild, after all, they tend to eat a bit of grass. They get tasty food and strong teeth as a result. Here are the foods to avoid for them: 1. Fortunately, there are many alternatives to wheat that can be a source of carbohydrates, such as quinoa and oatmeal mentioned above. We will try our best to answer the most common ones below: Help! My Standard Poodle is still hungry! What should I do? Begging behaviors are sometimes caused by infrequent feeding or too much free time on their hands. Perhaps you can try to increase the feedings per day? A Standard Poodle puppy is very likely to get obese compared to other breeds so always restrict their diet in the right way. Obesity in Poodles also comes with all sorts of health issues, such as joint dysplasia, heart problems, sore backs, and tummy aches. You can try using a slow feeder discussed below or a puzzle feeder to help your Standard Poodle puppy slow down in terms of feeding. Likewise, you can also ask your veterinarian for an expert opinion. They might give your Standard Poodle puppy a recommended diet plan to avoid overeating and excessive begging habits. Any puppy not eating for a while is usually okay as it might just be stressed or full. But there are also times when not eating for a long time will make you panic. Here are the most common reasons why your Standard Poodle puppy loses appetite: 1. They just moved in Anxiety can cause any puppy to not feel well, which will result in loss of appetite. If you think about it, bad breakups and troubles with friends, family, and finances also make you not want to eat sometimes, right? They have a toothache Dental issues are also a factor that could make your Standard Poodle puppy lose their appetite. Get your puppy to a vet if you suspect that they have abnormally bad breath as that could be a sign of teeth problems. They have a bad stomach Perhaps your Standard Poodle puppy ate something bad? Talk to your vet right away if you suspect that your pup has some sort of digestive issue, which can usually be examined through their stools. To avoid your puppy getting a bad stomachache, you should be careful when feeding them new food. They might not like the food A Standard Poodle puppy can be a picky eater, much like all other Poodle types. Most pet owners like to mix part dry and part wet food, as well as some home-cooked meals and raw meats in the dish. This might attract your puppy to eat. However, keep in mind that raw feeding should be done properly to avoid bacterial contamination in meat. Most pet owners who start out feeding raw only tend to focus on the meat side, leaving behind certain vegetables and whatnot. Always make sure that your Standard Poodle pup gets balanced nutrition and research first on raw feeding before you begin. Slow-feeding a Standard Poodle puppy As mentioned above, a Standard Poodle puppy has a high risk for obesity due to quickly eating. In this case, a slow feeder can work well. Slow feeder bowls are available in the market and your local pet store — their job is to make your puppy work harder to get their food rather than gobbling it all at once. Aside from that, a puzzle feeder for your Standard Poodle pup works similarly but also adds a fun factor to their food. Category : Puppies When you take your puppy home usually around weeks of age they will need to eat 3 or 4 times a day. At 8 weeks old we feed small meals 4 times a day at 7 am, 11 am, 2 pm and then at 5 pm. We allow them free access to water until 7 pm in the evening. An alternative is to feed 3 times a day at 7 am, 12 noon and at 5 pm. If your puppy is hungry split the meals to 4 times a day. By the time they are 10 weeks old they can go to 3 meals a day. If your puppy feels thin you can feel all the ribs and backbone easily increase the amount of food. If your puppy feels fat you should be able to feel some of the ribs reduce the amount of food. Some puppies are very active and burn up every calorie they eat, some are prone to being a little rounder and their food intake needs to be carefully monitored. Research has shown that dogs that are not overfeed have a much lower risk of developing hip dysplasia. Keep your puppy thin and healthy. We do not recommend free feeding of puppies as this makes it more difficult to housebreak your poodle and regulate their diet. Better to move to free feeding after housebreaking if you choose to. It is harder to monitor how much food they eat when free feeding and a glutunous puppy may quickly become fat. Remember a thin puppy is less likely to develop hip dysplasia. We strongly encourage you to keep your puppy on the same food we provide for the first month. Both coccidia and giardia may live in the gut of a healthy poodle and they never have an outbreak. When their bodies are stressed they are more likely to develop an unhealthy balance and the result may be a sick puppy. Moving to a new home, leaving their Mother and siblings and diet changes are all stressful. We encourage you to make as few changes as possible to your puppies diet the first month. Changing to a different dog food — go slowly. It may take a month or longer to switch foods. If at any point your puppy develops an upset stomach go back to the level of food mix that they were doing well on. Should your puppy develop bloody diarrhea take them to the veterinarian, they have most likely developed gastroenteritis and may need some medication or possibly fluids. Go slowly, new protein sources require time for the stomach to adjust. This is true not only in puppies but also adults. We continue to feed our puppies 3 meals a day until they are 6 months old. Our belief is that in keeping food moving through the puppy it allows for better consistent growth and health. At 6 months of age we start to feed 2 times a day with snacks throughout the day. We continue to feed our dogs 2 times a day throughout their life. We feed snacks several times a day to both puppies and adults which may be carrots, green beans, eggs or chicken or pieces of their kibble. We feed our poodles both kibble and home cooked food. Bully sticks are given occasionally for chewing. No Comments.
Aggression in Labradors Dealing with Aggression Labradors are not usually an aggressive variety. However, there are several factors which may contribute to aggression in labradors. Personality and genetic disposition are not usually the main influences. The early life experience of pups in the 'first fear imprint period, Aggression against the pup by family members or other household pets is highly influential to the way that a dog will respond throughout its life. The secondary influences include sex, age, size, hormonal variation during pregnancy and anxiety. Anxiety in pups must be placated with secure affection and positive discipline. Socialisation from 8 weeks of age is also critical for the healthy development. Do not use physical punishment. This can increase the intensity of your dog's aggression. For general health reason, particularly in later life, we do not recommend this prior to 8 months of age. Types of Aggression Animal behaviouralists classify patterns of behavior and the circumstances in which they occur. This is done to determine the dog's motivation and the cause of the behaviour: Dog to dog - Pack order aggression is one of the most common forms of aggression in dogs. They are pack animals, and they relate to humans as members of their own pack. If your dogs are fighting, do not get in the middle. Interrupt the aggression using water in a spray bottle. Dog to human aggression occurs as the result of intimidation or physical intervention by people, your and old, adult and child. Redirected aggression can occur when an aggressive dog, particularly a male that redirects its aggression from the source to another. When an owner is restraining a dog by pulling him back the dog may retaliate. Dominant dogs often redirect their aggression towards pack subordinates or children of equal size or smaller. Dominant dogs will defend their pack area including a home, room or yard. House and feed your dogs separately if they are fighting with each other. Remove contentious objects like bones and toys. Gender aggression particularly between adult males involves territorial and dominance disputes. Inter-female aggression occurs most frequently between adult females living in the same household. This will be apparent if one female is pregnant. Predatorial aggression is directed towards quick-moving stimulus, like a car or bike. Anything considers as prey, usually other weaker species can be the object of this aggression. Pain induced aggression occurs when a person attempts to touch a painful area or when injections are given. Fear induced aggression occurs when when the dog senses that it is cornered or trapped and cannot escape. A fearful dog is often the victim of an owner uses severe punishment common. Active and unpredictable children may induce this type of aggression. Never allow small children to have unsupervised access to any dog no matter how passive the dog may appear. Children and adults should avoid interacting with dogs that are eating. They should never tease or hurt dogs. Keep your dog confined when unfamiliar children are present Maternal aggression may be directed toward anyone that approaches a bitch with puppies or in false pregnancy. Pawling Chocolate and Black Labradors. I have 7 mo old ladies from the same litter and we've avoided any real fighting and their play has evolved leagues from when we got them. First month they just couldn't do off leash play outside without getting over threshold so we just ceased that till later. I was unaware of this problem when we adopted but read a lot and consulted other trainers. We seperated them entirely for a month aside from an hour or two in the evening with us in a playpenned living room. They did not like this at first. Once we noticed that in the evening playpen sessions they were responding to obedience commands and maintaining eye contact while with each other we moved on to weekend walks together, and monitored play sessions in a fenced yard. They tend to play well for a few sessions then I'll have to cut one short if one starts to bully up volume, not taking breaks in play when the other submits or bows out for a moment i just use a lead and take one out. If it persists we just go home and chill out. It gets better and the moments of over stimulation are getting less frequent. Indoors we never had much issue but we made a floor layout without a lot of wide open space so they can't cage match or run about much. Limiting their speed seemed to end any loud play. There's little more adorable than watching a group of puppies tussle with each other, but how can you know when the wrestling stops being playful and starts to become a true fight, though? What can you do if you have one puppy in particular that continues to take play time a little too far? Why Do Puppies Fight? Puppies learn normal social behavior, what is acceptable and okay and what is not, from interacting with other puppies. This starts even before puppies are weaned from their mother. Healthy play allows a pup to not only build a good foundation of socialization but it also helps them learn body language and other nonverbal behavioral cues. What they learn as puppies in regards to normal dog-on-dog behavior sets the ground work for skills they will utilize throughout their life. Being able to read body language and behavioral cues yourself is of utmost importance in order to differentiate puppy play from puppy fighting. Puppies that are engaged in healthy, happy play will be loose, having bounding, bouncy, sometimes exaggerated movements with a big, silly, open mouth. Healthy play between puppies has no winners or losers. Instead, there are constant role reversals where you may see the chaser become the chasee only to become the chaser again. You will also see puppies taking breaks from healthy play. Two puppies may be tussling on the ground one second and then getting up to go get a drink of water the next second. Puppies that are engaged in a fight will have markedly different behavioral cues and body language. Instead of loose, bounding movements they will become stiff and tense. You may even see their hackles raise up. Instead of a happy, open mouthed, tongue lolling face, they will tight lipped with either a snarl or a low, quiet growl. The ears will become flat and pinned back. If you happen to catch your puppy in a fight you want to separate the puppies as quickly and safely as possible. If your puppy has their leash and harness on them this usually can be done without much difficulty. You may get injured in the process. Instead, redirect them with other toys or try to momentarily distract the puppies with a loud noise, such as whistle or clap. How to Prevent Puppies from Fighting Puppies that are routinely getting into fights with other puppies may need more enrichment outside of puppy social hour. Finding a trainer is sometimes easier said than done. Unlike the world of veterinary medicine, the world of dog training is not regulated, either by federal or state guidelines. Anyone on the street can wake up one morning and decided they want to start training dogs but that does not necessarily mean they should. A good trainer will utilize science backed, evidence based methods. They will seek out different certifications in their field certifications that, again, are not required to call yourself a dog trainer and continuing education lectures and workshops to stay up to date with modern methods and current studies. One thing to definitely watch out for when finding a dog trainer is one that guarantees results or behavioral changes. Dogs, just like people, are all individuals and their personalities and behavior are as fluid as our own. For that reason, a trainer may be incredibly successful training a dog with one behavioral concern but that does not mean they will be able to successfully train all dogs with that same behavioral concern all the time. As with most things, if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Additional exercise, usually in the form of play time not involving other puppies, can also provide your puppy with a more appropriate outlet for aggressive play. Toys such as balls or stuffed toys allow you to play with your puppy from a distance and are perfect for this. A lot of puppy fights are not a result of an offensively aggressive puppy but rather a puppy that is just overstimulated and over aroused. Basically a puppy that is over aroused is just so excited about whatever is going on they cannot handle it and they pounce on whatever is nearby. Oftentimes over stimulation in puppies can be managed by increasing play time with their balls and stuffed toys. Puppies need playtime with one another in order for them to grow up into confident, well-adjusted dogs. Knowing how to tell when a healthy tussle has crossed over into a true fight and knowing appropriate outlets for more aggressive play, though, is just as important for setting your puppy up for success. If you suspect your pet is sick, call your vet immediately. For health-related questions, always consult your veterinarian, as they have examined your pet, know the pet's health history, and can make the best recommendations for your pet. More from The Spruce Pets. They love everyone. Sound familiar? The Reactive Labrador The reality is that there are individual Labradors who are reactive and use aggressive behavior at times. The reasons or motivations for their behavior will vary. But one thing is true of all of them: aggressive behavior is totally normal. All dogs can use aggression to a greater or lesser extent depending on their individual temperament and experiences. Just like every person can lose their temper or slam the occasional door in frustration. When working with a reactive and aggressive Labrador the aim is not to suppress the behavior. How we do that varies depending on the likely emotion underlying the reactive behavior. Warning Signs of Reactivity in Labradors Generally canine social etiquette is ritualised and aimed at diffusing tension and avoiding conflict; aggressive behavior carries a risk of injury and is therefore a last resort. Dogs will show early warning signs that they are feeling uncomfortable in a situation. These include turning or moving away, yawning, nose licking, and their pupils will dilate. If they are prevented from moving away, then they are likely to increase the intensity of their signals. Moving on to snapping and biting to get their point across. If the dog learns that the smaller signals are ignored, or if the intensity of the trigger is too high, then they will respond with the more overt behavior. They will start barking, rushing towards in an attempt to drive the trigger away, snapping and biting. The aggressive behavior in the image below is cued by the handler. These are a couple of the indications that this is a learned response. If the dog may be in pain then providing suitable pain relief is essential. Reactivity From Frustration Another common motivation for aggression, but one that is often mistaken or forgotten, is frustration. A frustrated dog is likely to show fewer of the lower level signals of discomfort. Although lip or nose licks are common in times of conflicted emotions such as wanting to greet but not being able do because of the lead, or a fence. If your Labrador is bouncing on the end of the lead, weight forward, ears pricked, tail up, and barking with a high pitch then they are likely to be a frustrated greeter. One who may behave more appropriately off lead when they can greet as they like. Many frustrated greeters, however, are socially inappropriate. Rushing at other dogs and ignoring any signs from them that they are less than enthusiastic about the approach of 30kg of happy Labrador. They may well end up being snapped at, or worse, by the dogs they bounce on. It is not uncommon for dogs whose reactivity manifests first as frustration to develop elements of fear-based aggression after being told off by other dogs for their social ineptitude, leading to considerable conflict of emotions around other dogs. Dogs who become extremely frustrated around other dogs, or when denied things that they want, may well redirect their frustration on to the nearest object they can find. The lead, the person or dog standing next to them, or a toy if one is available. Providing a suitable outlet such as a tug toy is one way to manage the situation in an emergency. Does Predation Create an Aggressive Labrador? It is worth mentioning that predation is also a common motivation for aggressive behavior. Labradors are not traditionally associated with catching and killing prey. But actually it is not unusual to meet dogs who are aroused by fast moving objects. Such as bicycles, running people and the more obvious small furry animals and birds in our fields and hedgerows. Again, if the desire to chase is thwarted then any resulting aggressive behavior may well be frustration-related. This is despite predation being the initial motivation for the behavior. Is Reactivity in Dogs Medical? There are several techniques that can be used to modify aggressive Labrador responses. Before considering any of them it is essential to rule out any underlying medical issue. Pain or illness which may be contributing to the aggressive behavior. Pain is the most obvious cause. So if your dog appears stiff, reluctant to move or uncomfortable at times then discuss this with your vet. It can help to take video of the movement, gait, or situations that concern you. This will mean that your vet can see exactly what is happening, in a way they cannot recreate in clinic. Even if a clinical exam does not identify a source of potential pain it can be beneficial to trial a short course of pain relief. Make sure you note any changes in behavior or movement. Pain which occurs when playing with other dogs can often be at the root of the onset of dog:dog aggression; equally aggression towards people can be triggered by pain or the fear of pain on being stroked, or moved from a resting spot. As well as pain there are medical issues which in themselves increase the likelihood of aggressive behavior so a thorough vet check is essential. Especially in cases where you seem to have an aggressive Labrador without warning. The behavior has developed suddenly. This helps them relax and improves their general welfare. They are no longer on edge anticipating something which scares or arouses them. And also stops them practising the behavior that we want to change. Every time your Labrador reacts aggressively they are strengthening the neural pathway. This makes that behavior more likely and harder to change; it becomes their default and may well be used in situations away from the initial trigger in the future. Aggressive behavior which has generalised in this way is much harder to change. If your Labrador is reactive towards other dogs on walks, whatever the underlying emotion behind the reaction, then try to find alternative places with fewer dogs and keep your distance by turning around calmly before your dog can react. Or look for a local space such as a riding school or dog training centre you may be able to hire for safe and secure walks. Reacting To Reactivity It is important to note that if your dog does react aggressively, whatever the situation, scolding them or correcting them will not help them learn what you do want them to do instead. In fact it may well make things worse, as they then become concerned about your reaction as well as the thing that triggered their behavior in the first place. Instead, calmly move them further away from the situation until they are at a distance where they can be calm themselves. If possible let the dog look at the scary, or frustrating, thing and reward them with tasty treats for being calm. This also helps them start to change their emotional response; so that the dog that scared them is now associated with tasty treats instead. We will next take a look at ways of changing emotions and behavior in the medium to longer term. Aggressive behavior is a normal part of social interaction. In some cases the genetic tendency of a dog to be fearful, anxious or easily frustrated, or the length of time they have been practising their aggressive behavior, will limit the progress you can make with them. You will need patience, and a willingness to accept that their needs are different from those you might have expected when you brought them home. Your Aggressive Labrador There is an increasing understanding of the needs of sensitive dogs, and many more trainers and dog places offer activities that are perfectly suited to dogs who do not wish to run and play with other dogs, or who would rather have a bit more space around people. Scentwork and tracking are ideal, as are activity classes which offer lots of different options, from trick training to fun rally. This should involve acknowledging and working to change their underlying emotional response, not simply suppressing the aggression using punishment. There should also be a focus on enabling them to manage themselves in arousing situations, so that, in time, they can make the right choice without needing direction for you. Many dogs will also need help to learn the correct social skills around other dogs. Your Labrador is an individual, with individual experiences and genetics that make them unique; their behavior modification plan should be as individual as they are. Even if you are able to manage the day to day behavior modification training alone, the benefits of working alongside someone who can provide objective feedback, advice on the next steps and support are invaluable. High value food is usually the obvious choice. This can quickly change his emotions from wanting the other dog to go away to wanting them to be around so that he gets the really yummy treat. This is usually done in conjunction with DRI so that he can start to learn how to behave appropriately and be reinforced for polite behavior around other dogs. At all times your Labrador should be working at a distance where they are not reactive, and gradually moving closer to their trigger when they are ready to do so. Any signs of low-level fear or anxiety should be respected and the distance between the dogs increased until the fearful dog is comfortable. To continue working with a dog above threshold is stressful for your dog, counter-productive and risks an aggressive response. Options for Helping your Reactive Dog One of the main criticisms of BAT is that it relies on your Labrador feeling empowered, or relieved, by the other dog moving away in response to calm behavior from your dog. In learning theory terms this is negative reinforcement i. This suggests that he was uncomfortable beforehand, even if only marginally. CAT and flooding are far more extreme in their use of relief as a reinforcer and should be avoided. Examples of this include sitting automatically before their lead goes on, or waiting calmly without being told when you open the boot of the car. This is particularly useful with frustration-related aggression where learning to stay calm when denied access to things he wants is the key skill your Labrador will need to learn before you can work on his manners around other dogs. As with any kind of training or behavior modification, finding a trainer whose skills and knowledge are suitable for your reactive Labrador is key. You must have confidence that they have a range of appropriate tools available to them, that they are able to accurately assess and respond to your dog and that you would like to work with them. This article has only scratched the surface of the options and techniques that are available to help you and your reactive Labrador, but good help is out there. Building a trustworthy, capable, vigorous, and beastly Olde English Bulldogge is my lifestyle. My breeding program permeates my entire life and gives me purpose. Take a look around my site to see the Evolution Bulldogge difference. This is my story. The giant bulldog in the cartoons had a magnificent head, colossal chest, low, broad, heavy, and muscular body! Immediately Bulldogs became a massive fascination for me. The cartoons with bulldogs were by far my favorite. I would become a very excited kiddo each time a bulldog made a television appearance. This fascination grew into an obsession. Unfortunately, my first introduction to a real bulldog was a disappointment mixed with a strange sense of enthusiasm. My friend Mikey had a female English Bulldog at his house. She was tiny, chunky, super cute, and snorty. He showed me that when he nudged her chest with his shoe, she would grip it and snarl in rough play. Her bully mind was incredible, but her body was lacking. I really thought bulldogs were going to be how television portrayed them to children. There had to be something better. I was fifteen years old when I met Mr. Jack, an over-sized English Bulldog stud. I spent hours playing and wrestling around with him. He was a great bulldog, and he was reasonably similar to my giant cartoon bulldog dream. Unfortunately, he was not quite the icon of health or vigor I had hoped for, but I was completely hooked. I made a clear decision. I would become the greatest bulldog breeder in the world. My parents, however, put my dream as a bulldog breeder on hold. Over the next decade and a half, I spent countless hours and days researching genetics, anatomy, physiology, and biology. I was learning how to breed healthy versions of my beloved cartoon image bulldog. In my studies, I realized the English Bulldog is structurally limited in regards to health. I began looking at other bully breeds in an attempt to find a healthy bulldog that matched my vision. For many years my search came up lacking. By the time I reached this earth, bulldogs had become a gross mutation of their former selves. The bulldog of old- the courageous, capable, athletic, powerful bulldogs had long since become extinct. I become less enamored with the English Bulldog breed and more so interested in my image of what I felt a bulldog should be. But I did not Stop Searching. They were local, and the name in the olde tyme spelling piqued my Bulldog curiosity. I called and made an appointment to see what these Olde English Bulldogges were all about. I rushed right over to see this new promise of a better Bulldog. When I arrived, I saw the most superb Bulldog bitch that I had ever seen in my life! Bulldogs only moved that powerfully and quickly in the cartoons! I knew I was onto something with my brand new introduction to the Olde English Bulldogge. The sales pitch that the Olde English Bulldogge was healthy and capable sold me. Traveling around the country, I visited breeders of this amazing new breed and I bought up puppy after puppy. Dog after dog failed health and temperament tests. It quickly became evident that the Olde English Bulldogge breed also suffers from several of the same health issues which plague the English Bulldog. Compelled by obsession, I started all over, In spite of my losses. The lessons were expensive, in addition to well-received. Nevertheless, I searched tirelessly for Olde Bulldogges that would put me within reach of my ultimate goal of a bigger, better bulldog. Taking some significant losses, I realized getting what I wanted would mean creating it myself. Still obsessed with my dream, I kept searching and searching. With a few tastes here and there of what could be, I eventually stumbled upon a few exceptional dogs. As dogs finally started passing health testing, I could move forward. This small handful of quality dogs would lay the foundation for a solid breeding program. I began linebreeding my productions to make great family companion bulldogs that excel at protection. Evolution Bulldogges was born! Fast Forward a Bit… With multiple generations of tested and proven dogs, my main focus is to advance my Bulldogge breeding program consistently. My secondary focus is to help you get just the right Olde English Bulldogge puppy for you. Occasionally I have other puppies available who are not yet listed. Next up is another thing to do before you bring your puppy home… How To Puppy Proof Your House When puppy-proofing your house, think like a puppy. Crawl around on the floor and take note of what you see. Puppies will chew nearly anything, so make sure that there are no valuables down at puppy-height, or things that could be poisonous to them or be a choking hazard. Make sure there are no open cabinets or pantries where your puppy could get into food. Be careful of small trash cans that could hold some smelly trash that would be enticing to a puppy. And finally, next are a few other random tasks to do before you bring home your new puppy. Getting a golden retriever puppy? Check out the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook! Not exactly. Find a vet. Find the closest emergency animal hospital. This is not something you want to wait until you need it before looking it up and making a plan. Find a list of local poisonous plants and animals. Talk to your vet and do some research so that you know which plants and animals to avoid. Find a puppy kindergarten class. This will help with training, socialization, and general learning how to be a puppy parent. Check your yard or house for any escape routes. This next section will cover everything from what to expect with a puppy, what to do the first 24 hours of bringing them home, how to train them, and more. A week after bringing Oliver home, it was very obvious to me why she asked me that. Puppies are hard work! Their little bladders can only hold it for a few hours, so this is expected. Chewing Puppies will try to chew any and everything. Like every thirty minutes often. Now, for the most important expectation of them all… You will miss puppyhood! Yes, you will miss the sleepless nights and puppy bites. So make sure to take lots of videos and pictures. How would you like to be treated in this situation? Here are some tips to help your puppy get comfortable in their new home. Let your puppy make decisions When you get to your house, set them at your open front door and let them choose to walk inside. Let them explore their new home on their own terms. Letting them make decisions can give them a sense of confidence, hope, and control, and ease into their new home. Limit visitors Now is the time to build the bond with your puppy and let them get to know you, not overstimulate them with a lot of people. Limit their access to your home Getting used to a new home with two rooms will be a lot easier than getting used to a new home with five rooms. Only let your puppy have access to a few rooms so that they get acclimated to their new area quicker, then as they get more comfortable you can allow them to explore new areas of the house. You can use baby gates to restrict access to sections of the house. Bonus benefit: this will also decrease the chances that they leave you a present in the guest room. In general, just keep things low key when you bring them home and let them get used to their surroundings. Training Your Golden Retriever Puppy Training your golden retriever puppy is one of the best things you can do both for them and with them. They have short attention spans and like to have fun, so short training sessions and training games work best. A lot of people think that training is just obedience training, like sit and stay , but it also includes life skills like crate training , potty training , how to not jump on people or bite them, and how to not pull on the leash. Socialization Socialization is something that is not talked about as much as it should be. It can help mitigate fear and aggression and help them become confident, well-adjusted adult dogs. You can socialize your puppy with other dogs by setting up play dates with gentle dogs that you know are vaccinated and by going to puppy kindergarten. Dog to other living beings includes humans, cats, and other animals. You can socialize them with other people by taking them to a pet-friendly store like home depot, and you can socialize them to other animals by taking a walk by the neighborhood cat with lots of distance between them, so neither animal gets overwhelmed. Dog to stuff is the broadest category, but no less important. When Oliver was very young we were on a walk and a FedEx truck drove by. He had never heard a big truck like that and was terrified. So make sure that your puppy is comfortable with trucks, cars, the garage door, buses, umbrellas, and whatever other objects they may encounter. For instance, if you live in Chicago, get them used to trains, buses and crowded streets. Every day, separate out five special treats for your puppy. For example, you might let your neighbor give your puppy a treat, or maybe you take your puppy to a bus stop and when the bus goes by you give them a treat, or maybe you introduce them to a cow and give them a treat. The treat helps them have a positive experience with these new things and people, plus it helps you easily remember to expose them to lots of these new things. Do this for the first four weeks of their life and before you know it, your puppy will have been exposed to new dogs, people, things, or environments, and will be well on their well to becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. Puppy Raising Mistakes Below are some mistakes that new puppy owners make that could make it harder to train and raise their puppy into a happy, confident adult. Not remembering how young they are Puppies are like little toddlers. Waiting to train your puppy until they have a problem Training your puppy before they have any behavior problems will make life so much easier for you. Forcing things too quickly Things like crate training and potty training take time. Setbacks hurt more than stretching their limits will help, so be patient and take things slowly. Conclusion Golden retriever puppies might just be the best living beings on the planet. However, they are a lot of work and can be quite naughty sometimes. Bred in the highlands of Scotland by Lord Tweedmouth in the mid to late s, Goldens are a cross between a Yellow Retriever and an extinct dog breed, the Tweed Water Spaniel. Lord Tweedmouth wanted the ideal gundog to accompany him during fowl hunting and be able to withstand the rugged terrain and rainy conditions. Aside from being able to retrieve fowl, Lord Tweedmouth wanted an even-tempered dog to have at home when not hunting. And so, the Golden Retriever was born. Later in the s, they soon became a popular breed amongst American families when President Gerald Ford had a Golden named Liberty as his family dog. Golden Retrievers, like their name states, are golden! Their luxurious coats come in a variety of light to dark shades, ranging from light like the white Golden Retriever or English Cream to dark golden colors, even close to chocolate. Their coats feature feathering down their backs, chest, belly, hindquarters, and tails. Teach Them to Walk Nicely on Leash Many high-energy pups have a tendency to lunge toward exciting new things! Couple that with a social nature, and you may encounter that your Golden Retriever puppy will start to pull on leash. Either way, it is vital that you examine your own lifestyle, needs and wants to see if a golden is right for you. And, conversely, you need to evaluate if you can meet the needs of a golden retriever. If you can, we can attest to the fact that owning a golden is one of the most rewarding experiences you will ever have! They are addicting and people seldom have just one in their lifetimes. Here are a few things to consider: Size Goldens are medium to large sized animals. The standard size for males range from 23 — 24 inches at the shoulder and weigh proportionally from pounds. Females stand around .They normally possess extremely active tails making clean sweeps of coffee and end tables. Quite simply they need room. Uncluttered houses are a must! A fenced in yard is especially important in providing the dog enough exercise. Another option is a fenced dog park or walking trail. You must have a plan to give your golden enough exercise on a daily basis or both of you will be miserable. The younger the golden, the more exercise they generally need. Velcro Dog Goldens are faithful companions. They are usually always by your side, many will follow you from room to room. They will lie in the kitchen while you cook and at your feet while you watch TV. They must be near their humans to be happy. Be prepared to do a lot of hands on petting with your golden — they love it. Some goldens are downright needy in their desire for attention from their humans. Leashes You may have visions of letting your dog play fetch in an open field or running free on the beach. As a sporting dog they are easily distracted by birds, animals or moving objects; they must be kept leashed when being exercised outside of a fenced yard to keep them from running off. Shedding In Florida, goldens shed moderately all year long. Brushing every other day is to your advantage. If you require a fastidiously kept house, a golden is not the dog for you unless you like to do a lot of cleaning. You will always have dog hair around, especially in rugs, on furniture, and OH YES, occasionally even in your food. With a golden in your house, hair becomes a condiment. Oh — and you will have to vacuum much more often than before — or little fur balls will accumulate along your baseboards! Make sure you have a really good vacuum cleaner that you love using before bringing a golden into your home. Health Goldens are prone to allergies, skin problems, cancer and hypothyroidism and you may have to spend a fair amount on vet care over the life of a golden. Common inherited health issues are hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, various eye problems and heart disease. That is relatively cheap compared to if your dog has a health issue and requires veterinary care which today runs as much as human health care. Setting aside a monthly amount for a future emergency is a must. There are also quality pet insurance programs available. Goldens must be fed a high quality premium food to prevent costly skin problems — which means you will not be able to buy your food at the grocery or discount store — and will have to make a special trip to the pet supply store. There are other expenses such as toys, collars and leashes, brushes, shampoos and soft cozy beds. A well cared for dog, like its human counterpart, is happier with regular checkups and daily care. Grooming Goldens can be adequately groomed at home without expensive equipment. Grooming includes brushing, bathing, trimming hair from the pads of the feet, light trimming on ears, tails and back legs when necessary, and trimming nails. Neatness Goldens are easily housebroken and make great housedogs. They tend to be messy drinkers, dripping water on the floor after they take their drink. You might even encounter a little slobber. Training Goldens are usually easy to potty train and make great house dogs. Many owners wish to make their goldens into good canine citizens. Moreover, goldens tend to be sensitive or soft in many training situations. They must be handled carefully with a loving, firm, but gentle approach. The end result is a well-mannered dog that is a joy to be around. Small Children People automatically assume goldens are the perfect dog for a family with children. Golden puppies quickly grow up to be rambunctious, strong bundles of energy that easily can play too rough with young children, especially when they are 6 months to two years of age. Though they may bark and growl defensively, when it comes down to brass tacks — they will gladly hold the flashlight for the burglar and give them a big kiss. Outside Dogs Goldens make poor outside dogs. Especially in Florida, they develop skin problems and flea allergies if kept outside. They frequently develop thunderstorm anxiety. As sporting dogs they are easily able to dig out of a fence or sometimes climb over it when left outside for long periods of unsupervised time because they want to be with people. They also are frequent targets for theft if left outside in a backyard when the owner is away from home. Goldens are very social and are pack oriented. They frequently develop behavior problems when they are kept separated from their families. A happy golden is an inside dog. Male or Female? Many people are fixated on getting a female golden, thinking that females are more laid back and affectionate than males. This is not true. Male goldens are blessed with loving personalities. Many people call them big teddy bears and even prefer male over female goldens. Well, there you have it — the inside scoop on owning a golden. Goldens Rescued Since .However, avoid retractable leashes whenever possible: Although they seem easier during walks, retractable leashes are actually dangerous, especially for young puppies who are still getting the hang of walking on a leash. Keep your puppy on a regular leash with a maximum of six feet of space between you both. Snowy Pines recommends slip leads: Slip leads are what puppies are taught to walk on from a young age at Snowy Pines, since they give you as the walker more control over the puppy as he gets the hang of normal walks. You can also opt for an embroidered collar if your puppy seems bothered by the noise or extra weight of the dog tags. Many puppy owners choose embroidered collars since dog tags should be removed when the puppy is left alone as they can pose a hazard. You can stick with a small food and water bowl. Puppy Food Your puppy will need high-quality food to grow strong! In most cases, this means his own dog crate. A good dog crate should be large enough for him to stand up, turn around, and lay down comfortably. You can choose a crate that expands as it grows to save money in the long run. Most of our puppies at Snowy Pines will do well in a inch wire kennel with a divider that you can remove once he gets bigger. Be sure to check out our dog bed reviews too! Remember that most toys should not be left alone with your puppy since unsupervised playtime can lead to a choking or blockage incident. Image Source Puzzle Toys Puzzle toys keep your pup mentally stimulated while they also have fun. Additionally, these interactive toys provide help with weight management, satisfy natural hunting instincts, and even relieve feelings of stress or anxiety. These toys can easily become a comfort item and help curb any potential anxiety as well. Chase Toys Golden puppies need to have regular exercise. Chase toys are simple things you can buy at any pet store, like ropes and balls, but some interactive chew toys are designed to add a little zing to your daily play routines. So, for example, if your puppy just woke up from his nap and pottied, but you need to do laundry and load the dishwasher, the exercise pen is a perfect solution. It enables your pup to enjoy safe solo playtime. Training Treats Food is a powerful reinforcer , so treats are incredibly beneficial in the early stages of puppy training. Try offering him a treat when he potties outside or uses a chew toy. Quick Tip: The treat should be small and chewy so that he can eat it fast and keep his attention on you! With the proper carpet cleaner and enzyme spray, you can quickly combat any potty mistakes anywhere in the house. Dog Shampoo and Conditioner The Retriever family has a unique, double-layered coat designed to keep them warm in winter and cool in summer. It also dries quickly after becoming wet. It is such an impressive coat that it is essentially self-cleaning when it comes to dirt and debris. Pooper Scooper and Poop Bags A pooper scooper is a handy tool that many homeowners with yards find essential. Instead of bending down every time your pup goes, you can use a pooper scooper to clutch onto the waste and quickly throw it in your outside garbage bin. They are also expected as a common courtesy to other people outside. So before your English Cream Golden puppy comes home, be sure that your home, backyard, and car are puppy-safe and puppy-proofed. In the Home: Image Source Keep the toilet lid closed. Believe it or not, open toilet lids have the potential to be drowning hazards. Secure medicine and cleaning products. Keep these products high up or use childproof locks and latches on lower cabinets. Garbage should be kept lidded and secure. Lidded, secured bins are the best type of garbage cans you can have with a young puppy. Not only do you want to avoid spilled garbage, but a locked lid will prevent your puppy from getting into any potential hazards. Hide electrical cords and blind cords. Exposed electrical cords and long blind cords can prove to be fatal for curious puppies. Keep electrical cords hidden away, buy cord wraps to keep them safely covered, and be sure that your blind cords are tied high and inaccessible. Invest in a pet or baby gate. Gates can be used for doorways or staircases to keep your puppy away from certain areas of the house. In the Backyard: Be careful of plants and landscaping that may be poisonous or dangerous. Many plants are toxic to dogs , so be sure to triple-check if any are growing in your yard. Secure your yard with fencing and add gates around bodies of water. If you plan to let your puppy roam freely in your backyard, you should have complete fencing with no puppy-sized gaps around the perimeter of the property. If you have any ponds or pools, block them off with appropriate fencing to avoid accidental drowning. Keep your yard landscaped and manicured. Long grass and brushy areas can invite ticks, which can be extremely dangerous if any potential bites are not discovered early on. Generally speaking, your grass should not be higher than a couple of inches and potentially even shorter while your puppy is still young. In the Car: Image Source Move any chewable items and lock loose items in the glovebox. Confine your puppy in one area of the vehicle, like the backseat. Keeping your puppy confined to one area of the car is safe for everyone. Many puppy parents choose harness seat belts and car seats for younger dogs, while older dogs are big enough to safely sit in the back seat or trunk with cargo barriers. As your Golden Retriever gets older, you may find yourself opting for different barrier methods that will better suit his size. Kennel your puppy while in the car. Crating your puppy is the safest mode of transportation while in the car. Deciding on a Daily Routine Like children, puppies thrive on a fixed routine because an orderly one instills structure and confidence. Sticking to a schedule can also help reinforce potty training and prevent behavioral issues , like separation anxiety and barking or whining. Think of a schedule that works best for your puppy, which should include: Feeding: Pick out regular meal times and stick to them as closely as possible. Golden Retriever puppies will need three daily feedings until they are six months old. After that, stick to feeding twice a day at the same time each day. Fixed meal times will help you predict when your puppy needs to potty each day, which better ensures easier potty training. Scheduled potty breaks: Take your puppy out to the yard or on a walk to potty immediately after a meal and after they wake up to enforce a schedule that will help with house training. Playtime and exercise: Playing and mental stimulation are key to a happy puppyhood. Even though they will mellow out in personality as they become adults, Retriever puppies are high energy! Place the dog crate in a quiet part of the house since we kennel train at Snowy Pines, and it helps ensure their safety and comfort. And now is the exciting part: Your puppy is finally home! But now what? Puppy Socialization Socialization is vital for young puppies, especially between 8 to 16 weeks of age: A well-socialized puppy will grow into a happy and confident adult that feels secure in various situations. You can also invite friends and family over to meet the puppy. In this case, more is always merrier! To help your puppy feel comfortable around humans in general, expose him to different types of people when he is still young. We also recommend holding off on public settings like dog parks until your puppy is settled into his new home and routine so as to not overwhelm him. Once your puppy is vaccinated, you can consider signing him up for puppy socialization classes. These classes, alongside training courses, can help prepare your pup for a long walk or a day at doggy day camp. Training Techniques Training is just as essential as early socialization. He may become disruptive and exhibit poor behaviors like jumping on visitors, chewing on furniture, and barking incessantly, among other frustrating challenges. Your puppy may also struggle with separation anxiety. They will comprehend basic commands and learn things such as his name, housebreaking, and early manners. They will be able to take on more advanced training and commands, and they should understand what good dog manners are. This age is essential when it comes to instilling how you want him to behave through adolescence. Puppies will begin teething at this point. Your new puppy might use anything possible to exercise his teeth, so you must start teaching him not to use your hand or furniture as chew toys. Anytime your puppy chews on something undesirable, have a toy nearby to put in his mouth instead. You can also try using bitter apple spray to deter biting and chewing on household items. Be firm but loving with clear, consistent commands and minute training sessions each day. Quick Tip: Keep in mind that at this age, this is when the key socialization period ends for your puppy: From this point forward, everything your puppy has learned will influence the way he behaves around people and other animals. While this is good, this age will also be a challenge because he will try to determine his ranking in the household, which can be frustrating when hormones play a role! Although spaying and neutering are standard for most breeds around six months old, studies have found that doing so for Golden Retrievers can actually increase the risk for joint disorders. Therefore, the standard for this breed has recently changed, and many vets suggest waiting to spay or neuter until 12 to 24 months. Training can be an overwhelming process, which is why many Golden puppy owners opt for working with a dog trainer or enrolling in training classes. Snowy Pines offers three levels of training when adopting one of their golden retrievers, which can save you tons of time and frustration in the long run. At your first checkup, you can also ask about getting your puppy microchipped!

But, there are some important safety tips that pet owners need to keep in mind to protect their pets from excessive heat and other summer hazards. Keep cool! Save walks for cooler parts of the day Carry water with you for you and your dog Remember asphalt gets very hot. If you cannot hold your hand on the asphalt for 30 seconds it is too hot to walk your dog Make sure your dog has ample shade and a constant source of cool water when outside NEVER leave your dog in the car - Even on a pleasant day, temperatures in a parked car with the windows rolled down can exceed degrees within 10 minutes. Don't shave your pet. This actually removes their natural insulation from the heat. Pets can get sunburn too. Use pet-friendly sunscreen if your pet will be out in the sun for an extended amount of time. These include but may not be limited to: — plant food — insecticides and pesticidessuch as slug, snail, mole and gopher baits — coolants — citronella candles — and insect coils that may be around the home and yard. Keep pets out of your compost bin! Potentially lethal tremorgenic mycotoxin intoxication can result from ingesting fungus found on decomposing objects Also, be careful of ponds and other stagnant water that could contain various water-borne parasites such as Giardia, Coccidia, Leptospira, Campylobacter, and Cryptosporidia and cause mild to severe diarrhea.
