We see, to our dismay, too many dogs being bred that would not even meet their own breed standard yet alone produce the correct breed standard for the Labradoodle or Australian Labradoodle. Labradoodle Temperament Temperament is critical to the work of the Labradoodle and Australian Labradoodle. To us this indicates we should only be breeding dogs that are laid back, calm, loving, easily trained, family friendly loving adults and kids , fun loving and comical. We are very proud to announce that we have puppies from each of our parents in therapy service, some have passed Guide Dog testing, on is in training as a mold detection service dog. We also work very hard 0 to 8 weeks to handle and train your puppy under a top canine behavior model. Labradoodle Health Health is always an issue for us and our families. The question is typically asked, "What are the health issues in the labradoodle and Australian labradoodle breed". Since these are the issues in the breed, we screen all our breeding dogs for all of these. We have generations of Health tested clear dogs. Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard under our program Labradoodle Conformation General Appearance Should be athletic and graceful, yet compact with substance and medium boning with a free flowing wavy or curling coat that does not shed. Joyful and energetic when free, soft and quiet when handled. They should approach people in a happy friendly manner with eye-to-eye contact, keen to learn and easy to train. Size Standard: 21 to 24 not over 25 inches or about cm from the wither to ground measurement. The ideal size for the female is inches and the male is inches. Weight range tends toward kg about lbs. Oversize is a major fault. Medium: 17 to 20 not over 21 inches or about cm from the wither to ground measurement. Weight range tends toward kg or about lbs. Miniature: 14 to 16 not over 17 inches or about cm from the wither to ground measurement. There is no correlation between height and sex in the Miniature size. Undersize is a Major fault. Body Height to length ratio square and compact. Shoulders should have good angulation with firm elbows held close to the rib cage. Upright shoulders is a fault. Hindquarters should be of medium angulation with short strong hocks. Top line should remain level with strong loin and level croup. They are a galloping dog therefore flanks should rise up from a brisket set just below the elbows, but should not be excessively deep. Ribs should be well sprung but not barreled. Overall they should appear square, balanced, and athletic with good muscling. Movement When trotting should be purposeful, strong and elastic with good reach and drive, giving the appearance of "going somewhere". When relaxed, happy or at play they will prance and skim the ground lightly. Excessive tightness in the hip will produce a stilted action and is considered a fault. Top line should remain level with strong loin and croup. Tail Is relatively high and is preferred to be carried saber. Neck Firm well muscled neck should be moderately long, slightly arched and flow into well angled shoulders with no appearance of abruptness. The neck should not be coarse or stumpy and should lend an air of elegance to the dog. A short or thick neck is a fault. Head Sculptured, broad, well-defined eyebrows, medium stop, eyes set well apart, nose to stop slightly shorter than stop to occipital. The head should be clean and chiseled, and fully coated as on the body, legs and tail. A long, narrow or blockhead is a fault. Ears Set moderately flat against head and should be level with eye. Leather should be of medium thickness, when gently drawn forward should reach the top canine tooth. Ear canal should be free of Excessive hair and not thick or bulbous. When inquisitive or alert the ear should rise to the top of the head. Thick, heavy ear leather is a fault. Eyes Slightly round, large and expressive, always offering eye-to-eye contact when engaged in activity with humans. Protruding or sunken eyes are a fault. Watery or tearful eyes are a fault. Wide round or narrow almond shape is considered a fault. Teeth Scissor bite. Undershot or overshot bite is a major fault. Crowding teeth in miniatures is a fault. Nose Large, square, and fleshy. Coat Coat length should be inches long. It should be straight, wavy or forming spirals and should naturally grow in staples with a soft texture. It should not be too thick or dense nor should it be fluffy or fuzzy. It should be a single coat; any sign of a double coat is a fault. The ideal Fleece and Wool coats can be spun successfully. Hair coat [Hair texture that sheds] is undesirable and is a major fault. It is important that the coat gives the impression of being a fleece in type rather than dog hair. Fleece The focus of our program : Texture should be light and silky similar to the texture of the Angora goat. Appearing to contain a silky lanolin in texture. Appearance can range from an almost straight loosely waved to an obviously waved coat; Kemp is often found around eyes and along the top line. The absence of Kemp is highly prized. Wool: Texture is denser than that of the Fleece with a similar texture to that of Lamb's Wool. Appearing to contain a sheep lanolin in texture. The ideal wool coat should hang in loose hollow spirals. It is acceptable to exhibit a spring appearance rather than spiral but a sprung wool coat is undesirable. An overly thick or dense coat is also undesirable. There should be no body odor or shedding in the Fleece and Wool coat [with the exception of the Hair coat, which both has odor and sheds in varying degrees, usually seen in the early generation dogs. It is acceptable to see a coat change from the puppy to adult coat, and also during hormonal changes in fertile bitches. This coat does not shed, but should be groomed out. Pigment Black or Rose. Pigment should be strong pink spots or patches on nose, lips, eye rims, or pads are a fault. Dogs with rose pigment should have eye rims, lips, nose and pads with rose pigment. Pink spots or patches are a severe fault. Flecking with different shades of Hazel with Green - Blue make this eye color quite unique. Ghost eyes must remain soft in appearance. Cold, staring, expressionless appearance in all eye color is a major fault. Colors It is normal that all colors may show bleaching and discoloration over the top coat, referred to as sunning, this is quite expected and acceptable. The Australian Labradoodle is an active dog and often a service dog that enjoys the outdoors. Kemp [course hairs] sprinkled through a dark coat is permissible but very undesirable. Parti [Patched], Phantom, Brindle and Sable though not preferred are considered an acceptable color The preferred colors are as follows: Chalk: This color should be a white color but when compared to white is rather a chalky white in color Nose pigment to be Black or Rose. Nose pigment to be Black or Rose. Nose pigment to be Rose in color Red: This color should be a solid even rich red in color. A true red must not be lighter at the root than the outer coat. Reds can fade as the dog grows older, senior dogs should not be penalized for paling of coat color Nose pigment to be Black. Nose pigment to be Black. Silver: This color can range in shades from very light pewter in color to a dark charcoal in color it is preferred to see an even color through the coat but acceptable to see uneven layering of color in the coat. Silvers are born Black with the coat color developing over time yrs. The blue coat color will develop over time yrs but as a developed adult should have an even coat color, any other color throughout the Blue is undesirable. Color should be even, any other color in the coat is undesirable. Nose pigment to be Rose in color [matching the coat color]. Lavender: This color has a definite smoky lavender chocolate color giving an almost pink to lilac appearance. Lavender dogs are born chocolate and will develop over time yrs. Any other color in the coat is undesirable. Parchment dogs are born milk chocolate and will develop over time yrs. From a distance adult dogs can be mistaken for a dark or smoky cream. Nose pigment to be Rose in color [Rare color group] Temperament Extremely clever, sociable and joyful. Easily trained. Quick to learn unusual or special tasks. Active, a little comical at times. Can attempt to outsmart their owners if undisciplined. Friendly though obviously loyal to own family. Non Aggressive. It is the responsibility of conscientious breeders to health test their breeding stock and protect the Australian Labradoodle from developing recurring genetic disorders in the breed. It is good to keep in mind that the Australian Labradoodle is a family companion; we do not want the heartache of illness or the expense of less than sound dogs. Practical research indicates that the fleece and wool coats of the Australian Labradoodle are very successful with Asthma and Allergy sufferers. In these infant years of breeding the Australian Labradoodle some throwbacks will occur, with wiry, sparse, or combination coats that have partial shedding. These dogs need not be discarded for breeding, but should be assessed as to their soundness of body and temperament. Many of these individuals offer valuable hybrid genetics and will breed on excellent offspring. The same applies to dogs displaying undesirable color or size traits. In order to produce a breed with a broad genetic base of quality dogs, haste should be made slowly. Genetic resources must be kept broad to protect the Australian Labradoodle breed from the disasters that many other breeds are suffering, "the genetic dead end". Other health issues associated with the merle gene have to do with hearing. This gene may not support proper inner ear development, which may inhibit it from functioning properly. While you may be excited to bring home a puppy with green eyes or even blue, you may find that their eyes will change to amber as they age. Dogs with plentiful eumelanin in their irises will have brown eyes. Decreased amounts of pigment lead to amber eyes, while green eyes have only a trace amount of eumelanin and blue eyes have none. Blue eyes appear blue by refracting light in much the same way as the sky or the ocean. If you are out with your dog at night and you shine a flashlight in their direction, you may notice that their eyes seem to glow green. A Little Crust or Goop — Tears are an important part of good eye care for your dog. Tears provide nourishment and oxygen to the cornea and help get rid of debris and dust that can be become trapped in the eye. Sometimes the tears that naturally flow tend to become crusted around the eyes particularly in the morning or after a long daytime nap. It should be easily removed. This happens because these tears have a pigment that turns dark when exposed to air for any length of time. This can also be caused by a yeast infection on the face. Wiping the eyes and surrounding area with a warm damp cloth or eye cleaner should take care of the stains. If not, or the eyes become painful, see a vet. Watery and clear — Various conditions can cause excessive eye-watering, including blocked tear ducts, irritants, allergies, corneal wounds, anatomical abnormalities or glaucoma. The dog should be seen by a vet to prevent eventual blindness. What starts as a small eye infection can develop into something more serious, so have a vet examine your dog. They have to just deal with allergens, dirt, dust or what have you and hope that we keep their eyes clean. As much of an effort as they make to clean themselves, their eyes are one part of their bodies they cannot clean themselves. Here are a few ways you can prevent eye discharge and boogers in your Labradoodle puppy. Observe your dog and his surroundings to see if there are things that are bothering his eyes on a regular basis. If so, try to avoid these things. Make sure the dog is eating a healthy diet in clean non-plastic dishes and receives fresh water daily. As an owner, you should make it a regular routine to give them a good once-over. Check their mouth for sore or abnormalities, check their body for lumps or pests like ticks, look in their eyes, and examine their paws for cuts or abrasions. Many things can cause eye staining. As mentioned above, the type or color of discharge can often be a good indication of the cause or what can be developing. Eye staining is usually caused by excessive tear production, but it can also be an indication of a serious eye problem. Certain dogs are more prone to tear staining, and poodles are one of those dog breeds. Unsanitary conditions can also cause eye staining as can eating out of plastic bowls. Here are some medical causes of tear staining. Unusually large tear glands Unusually small tear duct openings Stress Glaucoma or another eye disease Inverted eyelid. Over size is a major fault. Care must be taken to keep the miniature Australian Labradoodle a solid athletic robust dog. The dwarfing of dogs can lead to many genetic and temperament disorders. Minimum size attention is of the utmost importance to maintain a healthy little dog. Most Australian Labradoodles will weigh more than their height reflects. Weight range tends to be 50 to 65 pounds. Weight range tends to be 30 to 40 pounds. Weight range tends to be 16 to 25 pounds. Dogs with rose pigment can have dark hazel, brown or ghost eyes. Eye rims should be rose as should nose, lips and pads. Pink spots or patches are a severe fault. Rose should be a rich liver color. Neck: The firm, well muscled neck should be moderately long, slightly arched and flow into the well angled shoulders with no appearance of abruptness. The neck should not be coarse nor stumpy and should lend an air of elegance to the dog. A short thick neck is a fault. Color: Any solid color including Cafe and Silver is preferred. Minimal white on the chest and toes is acceptable. Light chalky coarse hairs kemp sprinkled through a dark coat is permissible but very undesirable. Parti patched and Phantoms, though undesirable, are considered an acceptable color. Phantoms are any shading or two tone coloration such as a Black dog with lower legs showing a soft toning of silver or gold or a dog born dark with a golden shading at the roots or a slight brindling effect. True pure solid colors with the exception of Silver and Cafe are highly prized and are the ideal for the Australian Labradoodle. It is normal that all colors may show bleaching and discoloration over the top coat. This is called sunning and is quite expected and acceptable, as the Australian Labradoodle is an active dog and often a service dog that enjoys the outdoors. Weather bleaching or sunning must not be penalized. Red: A solid, even, rich red color which should have no sprinkling of other colored fibers throughout the coat. A true Red must not be lighter at the roots than at the tips of the coat. Red can fade somewhat with age, and senior dogs showing paling of coat should not be penalized. A true Apricot must not be lighter at the roots than at the tips of the coat. It can come in varying shades and may fade as the dog grows older. Senior dogs should not be penalized for paling of coat color. Blue: A dark to medium smoky Blue. Blue also belongs to the Rare Color Group. Blue dogs are born Black but will have Blue skin and undertonings at a young age. Any other color throughout the Blue is undesirable. Silver: Born Black but will have more of a grey skin and will develop individual silver fibers at a young age. Silver dogs can take up to 3 years to color out and become a beautiful smoky grey through to a light iridescent platinum and varying shades in between at adulthood. Uneven layering of color in the silver is normal. Chocolate: Dark and rich, born almost Black, they maintain a dark chocolate throughout their lifetime. Color should be even. Any other color throughout the Chocolate is highly undesirable. Chocolate belongs to the Rare Color Group. Cafe: Born Milk Chocolate of varying shades, and have the same gene as the silver dogs, often taking up to 3 years to fully color out to multi shades of chocolate, silvery chocolate and silver throughout. When given plenty of time in the sunshine, they develop stunning highlights. Lavender dogs are born Chocolate and can be difficult to distinguish at a young age. Any other color throughout the Lavender is highly undesirable. True Lavender belongs to the Rare Color Group. Parchment: Born Milk Chocolate, will pale to a smoky creamy beige. Palingbusually starts from an early age often as early as 6 weeks. As adults they can be mistaken for dark smoky Cream from a distance. Parchment belongs to the Rare Color Group. Australian Labradoodle Grooming Guide Choosing a Groomer Before you bring your Australian Labradoodle to the groomer, ask if they have had previous experience clipping Australian Labradoodles. Show your groomer some photos from our website so that they know exactly how you expect the clip to look. Labradoodle coats require a regular brushing and grooming routine. How often you have your Australian Labradoodle trimmed will depend on how fast their coat grows, your personal preferences in how long you leave them, how much maintenance you want to do at home, and how often you have them groomed professionally. You can expect to bathe and completely blow out their coat every weeks, and plan to have them trimmed approximately every weeks. For an adult Australian Labradoodle, you should allow on average, 60 minutes every two weeks for brushing time. If your Labradoodle is active in the water or hiking in nature areas, you may have to run a brush through them more often to remove debris or loosen hair clumping during the drying process post-swimming. Wait until your dog is dry, then run a slicker through their coat. Purchasing a small grooming table and arm, and training them to stand still during brushing and drying will save your back. But be warned that you need to always have a hand on your dog when they are on the grooming table or attached to a grooming arm. Never leave them or turn away or they can try to jump off the table and injure themselves. When your Labradoodle has short hair, an inch or two, regular brushing with a slicker can work just fine. Once the hair gets longer, it is important to make sure you are reaching all the way to the base of the hair by adding a metal greyhound comb. If loose hair is not removed near the skin, mats can begin to form. In separating your dogs coat with your hand, you can brush and comb all the way to the skin. Work backwards from the feet up to the body, and the tail to the head. Brush in the direction of the hair, but add small amounts of coat to each stroke. At approximately eight months old a puppy coat needs more frequent brushing during its changeover to the adult coat. Bathing: Australian Labradoodles need bathed and brushed out approximately once a month. Puppies can be bathed as needed. If you are going to bath your Australian Labradoodle at home, be sure to brush through the coat completely first. If you do it the other way around, any mats will get tighter when you get them wet. Also, watch that you do not pull on the mat while you are cutting it, and be aware of how closely the skin may be to your scissors. We also use a dematting tool to help break a mat into a smaller piece for easier removal. Then brush, comb, or gently work any mats out. Purchasing a commercial hair dryer is worth the investment and will speed up the drying process. Head: The lovable teddy bear look of your Australian Labradoodle is enjoyed every time you look at them, and every time you take them out and others look at them. No matter what length the body is trimmed, that adorable teddy bear face can make up the difference in winning hearts everywhere they go. A picture is worth a thousand words, so the photos and grooming card below coming soon will help to clarify the following worded instructions you will need to convey to your groomer to get exactly the look you want to see. It is best to print out the grooming card and take it with you at each visit to your groomer. This creates a more natural look and keeps the hair from poking at or covering their eyes. It also makes it easier to clean any matter out from the corner in the morning. Feet: Keeping your Labradoodles paws shaped nicely will help less water and debris attach to their feet as they are coming and going. We start trimming around their paws by around weeks of age to get them used to the action of having their feet picked up and worked with. You want to go around the bottom edge of their paw in a nice, rounded shape, snipping off longer hair so that it does not hit the ground. Your groomer can trim hair from the bottom of their feet with a clipper and a 30 blade. Nails should be trimmed regularly every weeks depending on wear. Our puppies associate clipping and brushing with attention and treats, and love it! Continue to make grooming a good time; be patient, reward with treats and praise while you clip nails and brush. Continue to clip nails every weeks, just a little tiny bit off each time! SUPPLIES Even if you plan to have your dog professionally groomed you will want to keep the following on hand: a good brush, comb, de-matting comb, nail clippers and blunt tip and thinning scissors. You can trim this back using thinning scissors preferred or blunt tip scissors. Trim an inverted V shape across the nose on a diagonal. The thinning scissors will give a softer, less choppy look. Trim around the feet in a large circle, to keep the floppy look but remove the extra hair that your puppy is stepping on. While the adult coat is establishing, you will need to brush multiple times a week, this is the best time for your puppy's first professional trim. During this transition staying ahead of matting can become a challenge and you will see some shedding of the puppy coat as well. The Australian Labradoodle has beautiful furnishings that are unique to the breed and lend to its floppy, teddy bear like appearance. These furnishings should not be trimmed too short, and this is what gives some groomers trouble. Talk with your groomer and ask if they are familiar with the Australian Labradoodle groom as opposed to a regular Labradoodle, Poodle or Schnauzer groom. A picture is worth a thousand words so share pictures and the instructions below with your favorite groomer. Use scissors and thinning scissors only, never use clippers when trimming the head and face. The top of the head should round off to the ears, but be long and floppy 3. Outside of the eyes should be long. This is a part of the eyebrow and should taper down to meet the length of the front tip of the ear at the leather. The muzzle should be trimmed vertically, no horizontal lines should show. The entire muzzle should have a layered round shape if you are looking straight at it-like the base of a fat pineapple! Chin should be trimmed as part of the round muzzle no long beard 6. Ears should be trimmed to the leather around the edge and layered long and natural looking. What health problems does this breed have? If a breeder claims that the breed has no inherited health problems, or that she isn't aware of any inherited health problems, politely end the conversation. OFA evaluates x-rays and diagnoses whether a dog is dysplastic or has normal hips. OFA certifies normal hips at 24 months. PennHIP also uses radiographic technology and is accurate in puppies as young as 16 weeks of age. No Miniature Poodle should be bred unless it has been x-rayed and its hips have been certified normal. If the answer to this question is yes, ask for the ratings. OFA ratings of excellent, good or fair are all considered normal. PennHIP ratings are a percentage; they show the proportion of dogs with better and worse hips. If the answer is no, decline to buy a puppy. Are they certified unaffected by OFA? LCP is a disorder of hip joint conformation occurring in both humans and dogs. In dogs, it is most often seen in the miniature and toy breeds between the ages of 4 months to a year. Although the mode of inheritance is currently unknown, no dog affected by LCP should be bred. If the answer to this question is yes, ask for your copy of the testing. If the answer is no and there is no normal hip certification, decline to buy a puppy. This is an optional test for Miniature Poodles, however, please keep in mind the hip certification is not optional. Have the dam and sire had their stifles screened by a veterinarian for patellar luxation? Are they certified normal by OFA? Were the grandparents screened and certified? Patellar luxation is often, but not always, a hereditary condition. The patella, or kneecap, is part of the stifle joint knee. When the kneecap luxates, the kneecap slips or pops out of joint either to the inside or the outside of the knee. Surgery may be required to fix this problem. Patellar luxation may be evident as soon as the puppy begins walking. Other forms manifest as late as 8 years old and all forms vary in severity. Veterinarians can do an evaluation to diagnose patellar luxation. OFA certification can be done at 12 months. If the answer is no, and the dog does not have a normal patella certification, decline to buy a puppy. Have the parents been x-rayed for elbow dysplasia? OFA evaluates x-rays and diagnoses whether a dog is dysplastic or has normal elbows. OFA certifies normal elbows at 24 months. If the answer is no, be aware that there have been Miniature Poodles which have been diagnosed as having dysplastic elbows and this condition may be hereditary. This is an optional test for Miniature Poodles. Have the dam and sire had their eyes checked and certified to be free of eye diseases, some of which are presumed to be hereditary, within the past 12 months by a veterinary ophthalmologist? Dogs must be examined annually for evidence of eye disorders. Poodles can be affected by cataracts, microphthalmia, micropapilla, optic nerve hypoplasia, glaucoma, and many other serious eye disorders some of which cause blindness. No dog that is affected with an eye disorder which is presumed to be inherited should be bred. A puppy carrying two genes for PRA will be affected with the disease. Dogs with prcd-PRA often become blind, and always have serious vision problems. There is no cure for PRA, but this condition is easily avoidable with proper testing and breeding. At least one parent must be clear to guarantee your puppy does not have the prcd form of PRA. A Poodle may also be deemed "clear by parentage" without needing to be tested itself. If the Optigen DNA testing was not recorded, ask to see the Optigen certificates and the registrations on the sire and dam along with grandsires and granddams and compare the names of the sire and dam with the Optigen certificates very carefully to ascertain that all of the grandparents are clear for the sire and dam of the puppies. Has there been any occurrence of seizures, epilepsy, diabetes, autoimmune diseases, Cushing's disease or Addison's disease in relatives of the sire or dam? Has either parent experienced any other major health problems? At the time of this writing, there are genetic health problems for which there is no screening or DNA test available. Unless you ask the breeder if the sire and dam have had a seizure or other health issue, or if any of the other listed diseases have occurred in any relatives, they may not volunteer this information. These problems may be hereditary and seem to be more prevalent in some families of dogs. Will you provide written copies of the results of all tests done on the sire and dam of this litter for hereditary health problems? Written reports are provided to the breeder whenever she has a dog tested for a genetic health problem. Reputable breeders are always happy to provide copies to prospective puppy buyers. Is all testing discussed above listed on the OFA website? If the answer to this question is yes, you will want to verify this for yourself. How do you socialize your puppies? At what age do you sell your puppies? No puppy should be separated from its mother and littermates before it is seven weeks old. Puppies who are separated before that age may not have learned to interact properly with their littermates. They may become dog aggressive as they get older. Many breeders provide a certificate from the veterinarian certifying the health of the puppy. Which vaccinations will the puppy have when I purchase it? Every puppy should have at least one vaccination before it leaves the breeder's home. The vaccine will include distemper and parvovirus, and may also include hepatitis, parainfluenza or adenovirus. The type of vaccine depends on the breed and the schedule the breeder or veterinarian chooses to follow. Will the puppy be wormed before it is sold? Many puppies have roundworms when they are born. Puppies may need to be wormed several times, which can begin as early as three weeks of age. The breeder should provide a schedule of the dates on which the pup was wormed, and the medication and dosage administered. If the breeder does not automatically worm her puppies, she should have done a fecal examination to establish they are free of worms. If the breeder has a positive fecal result, she should disclose the type of worms present and the course of treatment used. Although the pup may have been wormed several times before it is sold, it is always wise to take a fecal sample to your vet at the time of the pup's first visit.
