Ask your dog for a sit before entering or exiting any doorway to prevent them from dashing out the door which is very unsafe. It will teach them that calm behavior such as a polite sit will provide them with a reward such as their meal s. You can even ask for an extended sit such as a sit and stay while you prepare their meal s. It is also recommended to replenish their water bowl with fresh water daily. Having your dog go inside their crate will teach them to settle down, be calm, have some independence, alone time, or they can even take a nap! Provide them with yummy-filled chew toys to keep them busy such as a Kong stuffed with their favorite treats. Midday PM — Potty Your dog will enjoy going out for a potty break in the middle of the day. If you cannot leave work to give your dog a walk, consider hiring a dog walker or a dog sitter to help you. Try and fit some time to give your dog some playtime either with you or socialization time with other dogs at some point during these hours. You can have fun playing with your dog by a game of fetching the ball or with a toy. Keep in mind that playtime can also be a time to fit in some training time. As you get to know your pup, you will start to see pottying patterns that will help you and your puppy avoid mistakes in the future. This will look different for every puppy, but in general, you can start to stretch out the time between bathroom breaks about five minutes every three or four days. Taking Your Puppy to The Bathroom Spot In a perfect world, you would take your puppy to their designated spot, where they would empty themselves quickly and completely on command, and be ready to move on. This can be a reality most of the time , provided you follow these tips when using the bathroom spot. Use a cue word. When your pup is young, you should use the cue word whenever they use the toilet in the proper spot. When they are older and understand the word or phrase, you can say it when you want them to do their business, which will lead to faster results. Keep your puppy on a leash when toileting. Be boring, and just hold the leash until they start to go. If you get too excited when using your cue word, your puppy might not finish, and will end up emptying inside your home. Say the cue word once, and stand still while they finish up. A what? You may want to keep food rewards to a minimum when your pup is young. Remember, what goes in, must come out. I recommend staying out for up to five minutes. If your pup responds to your cue word, you can say it every thirty seconds or so. Then, bring them back to the designated spot and try again. Do not let them wander unattended — they may decide to sneak off and use your carpet. After ten minutes, head back out to your spot for another go.

Wednesday, January 2 Vestibular Disease and French Bulldogs Part Two Many adult dogs experience an episode that looks like a seizure or a stroke, and we are concerned that some Frenchies are being euthanized needlessly due to misdiagnosis. Vestibular disease presents suddenly. One minute your dog is running around or chewing a toy, and the next minute she can't stand up or remain standing, or she can't focus her eyes, and they are moving back and forth quickly in a motion called nystagmus. Her head may tilt either immediately or sometime later in the hours or days following the initial event. She may drool. She may panic. If you are like most people, you will almost certainly panic. Try to stay calm and take her to the vet as soon as you can. Deo suffered from vestibular disease. In addition, loop diuretics, cisplatin and propylene glycol have also been implicated as potentially ototoxic. I've photographed many families along with their beloved dog, often a Golden. I've had numerous Golden Retrievers in my training classes over the years, whether they be reds, English Cremes or the beautiful blonde that we so typically think of when we think of a Golden Retriever. Goldens hail from Scotland originally and are known as a hard-working breed, often employed as service animals and therapy dogs. They're also known for their voracious appetites, young-at-heart personalities and their penchant for carrying things in their mouths particularly when excited. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! When I came to your kennel, I was immediately impressed by the way you cared for your dogs. Your whippets were all healthy, happy and well-socialized. I could tell that you took great pride in your breeding program. When I met Billi, I knew right away that he was the one for me. Billi has been a joy to have in our family. He is the perfect combination of playful and cuddly. He loves to go for walks, play fetch and cuddle up on the couch. He is also very well-behaved. I am so grateful to you for helping me find Billi. My grandmother always told me how fabulous Whippets were, so I decided to finally get one. My fabulous boy has been the most loyal, loving companion one could ever want. We go out at 5 AM for a run on the golf course every day, never missing a day. My vet tells me he has the healthiest heart she has ever heard. I am constantly being stopped on walks or in Home Depot because people want to admire his gorgeous coloration or rave about his amazing demeanor. My entire family adore him and know that Grandma is protected on early walks, whether in the city or on the ranch. Our Blue-Brindle Irish female is now nearly 13 weeks old and has exploded in growth from when we picked her up at 8 weeks right at 13lbs at the moment. Sooo pretty. .She has been the easiest pup too.Her personality is off the charts!! We simply could not be more pleased with her!!
