The fleece coat does need to be brushed but it is much more easily kept long than a wool coat. The puppy and adult dog will need regular grooming because the face will need trimming as will the bum and beneath the ears to prevent matting. Somewhere between nine and fourteen months of age the adult coat will grow in. At this transition time the coat will need lots of attention in order to keep the length. Brush right to the skin with a stiff brush or rake. If the dog mats at this point she will have to clipped short by your groomer. Hair Coat The hair coat feels very similar to the hair on your head. It is unlike the feel of wool or fleece. The hair coat will shed. It requires little attention. Puppies will often look like they are going to have a fleece coat until the hair comes through the puppy coat at about eight or nine weeks of age. The doodle with a hair coat has the same wonderful temperament and personality as the doodle with the non shedding coat but is not good for a person with allergies or for a family that has chosen the doodle because of his non-shedding qualities. It is hard to get a brush through the curls if you leave it too long. Without this regular brushing right down to the skin mats will form next to the skin. Mats make it very uncomfortable for the dog to walk and run and play. We keep our wool coated dogs clipped short because we live with fields of weeds and burrs. It is quite possible to keep a wool coated dog with a long coat, it simply is a matter of keeping up with the brushing and keeping feet, faces and bums clipped. This would be a trip to the groomer at least every second month. Every six weeks keeps dogs in both long and short coats looking and feeling like movie stars. Grooming For Every Doodle No matter what the doodle coat there is grooming required. This can either be done by an interested family member or your groomer. Ears Fur grows out of the ears of a labradoodle. It begins its journey deep in the ear canal. If ears are not keep clean and dry dirt and wax can lead to severe ear infections. You can tell when the doggie has hot ears that there is a problem and a trip to the vet will be in order. Some doodles love to dig and have very thick fur in their ears. This means it could be a good idea to pluck the fur from deep in the ear. It is not difficult to take tweezers or better still a hemostat and pluck out the fur on a regular basis. I must say I almost swooned the first time I did it myself but it does get easier. Unless you are an expert it is a two person job, one to hold the dog and promise treats, the other to pluck. Your vet can recommend an ear drying powder which will keep the ears in good health. Of course, your groomer will do the ear plucking for you. If you take your dog every six weeks she should be fine. Nails Unless dogs travel on a stone river bed a couple of kilometers every single day they need their nails trimmed. Our Labradoodles have dew claws and they will always need attention. Nail trimming should be done every few weeks. It is however another wonderful thing your professional groomer will do. Our doodle girls have fuzzy feet and so have to be content with a simple nail trim. Little Bottoms All long coated dogs need a trim around their little bottoms for ease of toilette. Maltipoos can look very different from each other. They come in a variety of different colors. You can find a puppy in just about any color. Size depends on the size of the Poodle used. The Poodle used in breeding has a large role in the size of the puppy. Usually, toy Poodles are used, and this is the size we have used when writing this article. However, rarely, standard Poodles are used, and this results in an enormous puppy. They are affectionate and usually gentle. Puppies can be playful and quite active. However, they tend to calm down as they age. Some may stay relatively active into adulthood, like their Poodle parent. They are well-suited to families with children who like to play as well as snuggle. These dogs are a bit loud and vocal. They can make good alert dogs on some occasions, depending on their specific character and training. Maltipoos tend to bark at anyone who passes by. They do not shed much, but their coats are high-maintenance otherwise. Their wooly coat requires daily brushing from a young age. Luckily, most dogs get used to regular brushing. They typically need a bath at least once a month on top of whenever they get visibly dirty. They will likely need a bath after running through leaves, for instance. Or, at least, a good brushing. Clippings every few months are required, though their faces and paws may need trimming more often. We recommend scheduling them a monthly grooming appointment unless you are willing to learn how to groom them properly at home. Their nails should be trimmed every month at the very least. They need their teeth brushed quite a bit as well. Daily is best. These dogs are particularly prone to dental problems, so brushing is essential. They are not prone to many different health conditions. Minor Conditions. Their coat is somewhat hypoallergenic, although not completely hypoallergenic. This is because they trap more dander than other breeds. If you are an allergy sufferer, make sure you spend a lot of time with your Maltipoo before you bring them home to ensure you are not allergic to them. The other Line was brought to Fairfield by the Davis family that Alice incorporated. Davis told Alice he got them from the Lookout Kennels in Texas. In fact, he brought back all that they had as they were retiring. Alice was fortunate to have 5 of these special dogs. All of them were white. Within 4 generations Alice also found that several of the other dogs had been written about in the books telling how the German Shepherds had been developed. Example - Ch. This line produced the largest shepherds ever seen, often exceeding lbs. Crossing them with the dogs Alice had gotten from Dorothy Crider, produced larger dogs, both male and female, than the original ones from Dorothy. The White German Shepherds of Snowcloud Kennel are snow-white with black nose, dark eyes, lips, and some have black nails. They grow to be exceptionally large. I have had the honor of owning several. The males usually mature from 29" up in height and the females 25" up, depending on the care they receive after leaving our home. Their bone structure is huge. They have tall straight ears and beautiful shaped heads. They are an over all balanced dog. They are very gentle and loving to their owners and make excellent family dogs. They have proven to be very good with children and are especially protective of women and children. They make very loyal watch dogs and traveling companions as well as home companions. They are excellent in Obedience work and are so intelligent that training and showing them is very rewarding even for a novice. The white German Shepherd Dog has endured a long and difficult battle to earn its place as a purebred dog breed worldwide. It takes a deliberate and consistent breeding strategy to reliably produce all white German Shepherd puppies. Historically, white puppies would sometimes pop up amongst a litter of puppies bearing the more common black and earth tones. White German Shepherd Genetics Our understanding of the genes which control canine coat color is increasing all the time. But even as we unravel the unique DNA of other famously white dogs think of the Dalmatian, and the white English Bulldog , the white German Shepherd remains stubbornly mysterious. There was a time when all white German Shepherds were thought of as albinos. Nor do they carry the extreme white piebald gene which gives Dalmatians their white base. At the time of writing, in , the most widely accepted theory is that German Shepherds all have one spot in their genetic code which acts like a switch for white and non-white. But if they inherit the white gene for from both mom and dad, then all else in their genetic code is forgotten, and they are white. Because they need to inherit the white gene from both parents, it is described as a recessive trait. Only a pair of white German Shepherds are certain to have a litter of all white puppies. A careful breeder who understands German Shepherd coat color genetics can reliably produce a litter of white puppies by mating two white German Shepherd dogs. A solid white German Shepherd adult dog can range in weight from 60 to 85 pounds, with adult males outweighing adult females. As adults, the white GSD will stand anywhere from 22 inches to 26 inches high at the shoulder. Like the rest of their pedigree, the most common eye color for a white Shepherd is dark brown. However, coloration can range from a lighter amber to a dark mahogany color. Every so often, a pure white German Shepherd with blue eyes will be born. However, this is a rare trait attributed to expression of a recessive gene for eye color. A long haired one is even rarer! Long haired German Shepherds of every color owe their coats to a recessive gene for long hair. Historically, long haired GSDs were considered a genetic fault. Long haired dogs lack a waterproof, insulating undercoat, so they were unsuitable for working. But they are famously good-tempered and devoted, so modern long haired German Shepherds of every color are gaining popularity as pets and companion dogs. A German Shepherd with short hair has the same insulating undercoat as any German Shepherd, regardless of coat color. These dogs make for hard-working dogs who excel in guarding, herding, service, search and rescue, police, military and protection jobs. Their white coat helps to distinguish flock guard dogs from darker-haired predators such as coyotes and wolves. Grooming a White Shepherd In terms of coat care, the short haired white German Shepherd has the same basic grooming and coat maintenance needs as any short haired German Shepherd. All German Shepherds shed a lot, but white hair has a special talent for showing up against floors and furniture. They also shed out their short undercoat during the warm season. Frequent brushing and grooming can help keep shedding localized and manageable. The long haired German Shepherd will need more detailed and frequent grooming. You will need to pay special attention to cleaning and grooming their ears. Bathing should always be done sparingly to avoid removing necessary coat oils. Excessive washing can cause skin dryness that could lead to irritation or illness, so invest in a gentle shampoo. As with any working purebred dog breed, it is important to realize right away that these dogs are not bred to be lap dogs. They demand high level of work and interaction, or they will become bored and destructive. Are White German Shepherds Aggressive? In the past, many people trained GSDs to be wary of strangers, and aggressive towards trespassers. Most German Shepherds today are still wary of new people, and take a while to warm up to them. Early, daily, consistent and continuous socialization as a puppy will give them the confidence to greet new faces and situations calmly and confidently. From 8 to 14 weeks old, have visitors around every day, and take your puppy to plenty of busy locations. These include hip and elbow dysplasia — bone malformation at the joint, which causes painful arthritis and lameness. However, there is one condition that white German Shepherds might be more predisposed to. But further research is needed to see if this is correct. Are White German Shepherds Deaf? Has anyone ever told you that white dogs are more likely to be deaf? Dogs like Dalmatians, who owe their white coat to the extreme piebald gene, are more likely to have hearing loss. Dogs with the piebald or extreme piebald genes lack these cells, so they are white, and they may have hearing loss. But remember that white GSDs inherit their white coat, by a different, special gene? That means their coat is white, but their skin is still normally pigmented, and their hearing is unaffected!
