So do not use it as a correction or as a recall command, only ever use it to get their attention. You should also only use their name in a positive way, praise and reward them massively when they give you their attention, and never use their name for anything else. Come, and drop etc. At first, to get the praise and reward is why your puppy will turn to you when you call their name. But you want nothing so distracting as another animal or child just yet as this may be just too distracting and they will ignore their name. You want to call their name and when they look at you, instantly mark the behavior but leave it a couple of seconds before giving them praise and a treat. When they are consistently giving 2 seconds attention, move to 3 seconds, then 4 and then 5. If you get to 4 seconds and they start to fail, drop back to 3 or even 2 seconds again and then slowly increase. You may have gone too far too fast. If your puppy struggles to look to you with distractions in the room, you can up the value of the food reward to something like liver or bacon, something irresistible so your puppy is keener to get their reward. Or you may have to lower the distractions again for a few sessions. Dogs are gamblers and they like to attempt things knowing a reward comes now and then. But equally you will not have a reward to give them every time so you must start to phase it out! So go through the exercise lots over the course of a few days and start to phase out the treats a little. As this could be very difficult with so much going on around them, you will need to praise and reward instantly, and reward every time at first. And then start to increase the time they must give attention, and then start to phase out the reward a bit but of course still give massive praise. After building up to successes in many different environments with lots of different distractions, you should now be able to get your puppies attention reliably every time. Ongoing Maintenance You need to practice the exercises regularly in all environments with all sorts of distractions. As your puppy matures, you need to continually reinforce the behavior or the power of their name can get lost and them starting to ignore you when you call them can start to creep in. You do this by performing the exercises above every now and then. Also once started, stop before your puppy becomes tired or bored. They will not be able to concentrate or pay attention in this state. Nobody, not humans, not dogs, look forward to a telling off or listening to a person shouting their name angrily. What a load of bullcrap! Yes, we'd play together, but playtime always ended with no doubt in anybody's mind about about who the alpha male was! But, the end result was, we'd played together! This dog will not be cooperative during training, and may even want to escape the session instead. As with all dog training, treat timing here is essential: offer the treat immediately once he looks up at you! Continue this positive, happy training session for a few more repetitions. In this study, we investigated the normal lifespan development of attentiveness of pet dogs in naturalistic situations, and compared the resulting cross-sectional developmental trajectories with data from previous studies in humans. We tested a sample of Border collies 6 months to 14 years with humans and objects or food as attention attractors, in order to assess their attentional capture, sustained and selective attention, and sensorimotor abilities. Yes, you'll get a pup that's from health tested parents which will drive up the price a bit, and that's definitely worth it. But what really drives the price up is paying for knowledge. It is far more difficult than one might think to consistently produce puppies that have the drive to make good working dogs as adults. It takes study, training, time and money to pull off. A lot of it. You're paying for that acquired knowledge, a higher chance of getting a healthy puppy, and most importantly you're paying for working ability. If you have no plans to work your dog, paying for working ability feels like an unnecessary feature for many. Drive: If you've owned any other line of German Shepherd as a puppy, you remember the biting, the chewing, the destroyed shoe, or bite marks on a table leg etc. Multiply that by .The same prey drive that makes most puppies destructive, hyper, bitey, and gives them the zoomies is amplified. By a lot. They will play rougher and for longer. The only time they're still is when they're asleep. If you don't stay on top of things, you will pay a price, every time. And it will be like that for months. There's always that one person who thinks their dog is over the chewing phase at 12 months old and comes home from work to no longer having a couch. You might have a chance. A person who thinks they're prepared is often a person who is untrainable themselves. A person who is a little apprehensive is more likely to do in depth research, contact knowledgeable trainers who compete in dog sports etc. The local pet store training program isn't going to cut it. The week program they took to become a certified dog trainer isn't enough to prepare them to train your puppy, much less guide you through tough times. You will have to contact trainers who actually compete and have been working with working dogs for years. They are not cheap. In fact, you're better off joining a club yourself and training your own dog with guidance from experienced club mates. You cannot go half in on training a working line dog. You'll end up with a young adult dog that is completely out of control. It'll act like a puppy, chewing, nipping, jumping up, and barking etc. Knocking your guests and kids over while meaning no harm whatsoever. You will have to have control. You will have to have a strong relationship with your dog. You will have to set and enforce boundaries. You will have to learn to harness your puppy's drive to use it to your advantage. On a positive note, the easiest dogs to train, if you know how to train dogs using motivation and reward, are dogs with a lot of drive. They'll break their back for a treat or a short game of tug or fetch. If you harness their drive, they make very responsive, obedient dogs. Work: If you do not put in the work, you will be very unhappy with your working line dog. If you do, chances are you'll be happier with them than you've ever been with any other dog. So one must be honest with themselves: do you have the time to devote? You probably do, because it only takes minutes a day of training. But are you going to invest the effort in keeping an eye on the puppy, even going as far as using a leash indoors? Raising a working line German Shepherd puppy is much more labor intensive than raising just about any other dog on Earth, sans maybe a Malinois pup. A laid-back dog might be better suited to a less active family, and a higher energy dog would be better suited to an active family. Why health testing? All my dogs are health tested prior to breeding. Health testing means so much more than just a vet check. It's testing in specific areas by board certified veterinarians to ensure my breeding dogs meet the standards expected of breeders under the GRCA Code of Ethics, a standard designed to ensure the entire breed is as healthy as possible, and that buyers get the most healthy pups possible. By testing for things like eye, cardiac, and joint issues and by DNA testing for several common genetic conditions common to golden retrievers, I can ensure I am doing all I can to produce healthy puppies that grow into long-lived, healthy dogs. I test for all the things the GRCA wants its breeders to test for, and do additional testing, as well. For example, all my current breeding animals get heart clearances by echocardiogram, not only by auscultation. While there is no way to guarantee nothing bad will ever happen, I want to do everything I can to reduce or in some cases even eliminate the risk. How do you choose to do a particular breeding? My dogs are purposefully bred, versatile golden retrievers. I have kept or co-own at least one dog from almost every breeding I have done. One of my goals with all of my breedings is to produce pups I would want to keep for myself, and that I will be proud to have in the various competition venues representing my kennel. I also want them to be much loved companion golden retrievers. To meet those goals, I need to produce long-lived, healthy, correct, versatile dogs that can do all the things a golden is supposed to be able to do. I look for health and longevity when picking a sire, and I look for dogs that are physically correct meet the breed standard , have the correct golden disposition, and will be a good match for my girls. Many of the sires of my litters have produced well in the past, which is a good indicator of what they'll produce with my girls. For some breedings, I am looking for dogs with certain skills or capabilities prominent in the pedigrees. In others I am looking to improve upon what I have, to better some area I feel could be improved in my dogs on the whole. I am also careful not to lose the features I particularly like and that are correct in my dogs. I spend many, many hours reviewing pedigrees, observing dogs and talking to breeders and owners about their dogs, as well as others who may be familiar with their pedigrees from before I started watching those things. For the time being, you won't be able to meet both parents here at my home when you visit. My dogs are all related too closely to breed them to each other. In fact, I have done breedings with long deceased sires, choosing to use their frozen semen because they are very well known quantities; they have adult pups out there that help me evaluate what the sire will bring to a breeding, and I have life-long health and longevity information on both the sire and his other offspring. In other cases, I have had semen shipped from the far reaches of the country. This capability gives me the opportunity to expand the gene pool I use in my breedings, and I can search out the healthiest and best matches for my girls. I also have done local breedings by live cover, but it is a great benefit not to be limited by access to only local boys. What will our relationship be after one of your pups comes home with me? I usually set up closed Facebook groups for each litter so puppy buyers can stay in touch with each other, ask questions of me or each other, and so folks can share pictures, triumphs, and news. I have found it a great way to stay in touch, but not everyone is on Facebook, and those who are may not be frequent Facebook users. Be assured I am always accessible to answer your questions, and will always be happy to take your dog back and find him or her a great new home in the event you are no longer able to care for your pup due to health, personal, financial, or any other reasons. None of my dogs need ever become rescue dogs. I love these pups from a time before they are even born, and will always do what is best for them. I even have buyers that have put it in their wills that their dogs come back to me when the time comes, because they know I will put the dogs first. What are your requirements in terms of spay or neuter? For a good number of years, peer reviewed studies and vets and breeders whom I trust have agreed that early spay or neuter is very dangerous to the short- and long-term health of dogs. Everything from orthopedic issues, cancers, and fear of storms can be blamed in part on early spay and neuter. At the very least, I want my dogs to remain intact not spayed or neutered for long enough for the hormones to do their job getting the pups' bones and bodies to maturity. For girls, they should remain intact for at least two heat cycles, and for boys ideally until at least 2 years. I can tell you my boys do not reach full physical maturity until around three, so for their bones, joints, and skulls and other things less obvious to fully mature, I'd prefer they not be neutered ever, but at least not until they are three. Neutering a dog does not affect his instinct to mark. Training affects that. Neutering does not affect his instinct to mount other dogs as a dominance play. Training does. Neutering an aggressive dog does not alleviate his aggressiveness. Neutering a dog does greatly increase his risk of cancers common in goldens. You can often identify a dog spayed or neutered young by its disproportionately long, gangly legs. Those growth plates in the legs were still open when the hormones were removed from the dog, and growth no longer could continue in a balanced way. Buyers are often looking for good bone and big heads on their goldens, particularly the boys. Those things come with maturity while the hormones are intact. What is your guidance on vaccination? My general rule is to keep vaccinations to a minimum. I am not an antivaxer; vaccinations are vital to our dogs' health. For example, without vaccination, parvo kills puppies. I know breeders and dog owners who have lost puppies to parvo. These diseases we vaccinate against are serious. However, I believe in limiting vaccinations to the ones required, at the frequency required. My puppies will have their first round of puppy vaccinations before they go to their homes. After that, vaccinations need only be done if the dog needs additional protection. Titer testing will tell you if that is the case. My foundation bitch received puppy shots and then no further vaccinations other than periodic 3-year rabies as required by law where I live. At her senior physical at age 9, she was found by titer testing to still be fully protected against those things she was vaccinated against as a pup. Research what vaccinations are recommended where you live. Leptospirosis is common in some areas, very rare in others. The various dog influenza vaccines do not protect against all strains of flu, do not last long, and are not fully effective. Balancing the risk of infection essentially a contagious cough unless the infected dog has underlying conditions that make it hard to fight the infection against the effectiveness of the vaccine, consider if it is really worth putting those chemicals into your dog's body. Bordetella kennel cough vaccination is required by some boarding facilities, so you may feel forced to get that. However, it also does not protect against all strains, is not fully effective, and does not last long. I do not vaccinate for Bordetella. It is a cough that lasts several days, and can be treated if it is bacterial. In addition, I recommend vaccinating smartly - the fewer vaccinations given at a time, the less risk for complications. Vaccinating a dog weakened by some other condition or illness, for example an infection, can also lead to complications or reactions. Don't let a vet pressure you into doing anything unsafe for your dog. Your puppy can't advocate for him- or herself, and needs you to look out for him or her.

To help prevent this, avoid feeding within 30 minutes of exercise — either before or after. You may also consider using a slow feeder bowl if your dog tends to eat too fast. And wolf dogs are exactly the same. A Blue Bay Shepherd requires daily brushing during the worst seasons to keep this shedding under control. The rest of the year, you can get away with brushing them times a week. Regular brushing will also help keep their long hair free of tangles and give it that shine that makes them so beautiful. This does not take into consideration snacks and treats which all add calories. Our dogs need exercise to keep lean and burn off calories. Running is the best way to burn off calories, but walking also helps. Sixty to ninety minutes of walking per day every day is needed to keep dogs fit and lean. Obesity is fast becoming if not already an epidemic affecting our pets. Planning meals and exercise can help prevent our pets from getting heavy and, if they do pack on the pounds, creating a plan for weight loss will allow them to live longer more comfortable lives.

Give Them Time-Outs Puppies still have a hard time regulating their emotions, so they can get overstimulated and bite out of excitement or frustration.
