Certainly for my first dog he's 5 now that was the mainstream approach but more recently I'm seeing a lot more advice from behaviourists and trainers to be with your dog until they have the confidence to settle on their own. For some that's having the dog upstairs by the bed, for me this meant sleeping on the sofa close to my most recent puppy now approaching 2 until he was quiet at night. He wasn't very quiet at all as a young dog but I think I still only slept downstairs for a couple of weeks. Don't worry at all that you haven't done this at this point I only mention it as you may reconsider what you choose to do if he's noisy at night in the future. I posted a new thread yesterday "Ted. I made up a bed opposite his crate in our kitchen diner, but before that made sure he's peed and pooed outside, and did some clicker work with him settling in the crate. So far so good. I closed the crate after leaving a kibble-filled Kong with him. I also left a dimmed lamp on. He started on the Kong and I settled down to "sleep". He actually made very short work of the kibble lesson for next time - use some treat he has to work to reach! Almost immediately he started whining. I was determined this time that my wife would sleep through the night, so where I probably normally have ignored him, I sat up and did some more clicker work to quieten him down. I'll probably hear, when my wife gets up, that the sound of the clicker kept her awake! This worked for a bit, then he started again. That's how it went off and on for much of the night. Neither man nor dog got much sleep. At no time though was Ted anywhere near as loud and distressed as the night before. He was clearly not happy being in a closed crate and made a bid to chew away the fastener! This time I sat up and in an urgent whisper kept repeating "down" with no clicker, just "good boy" He eventually settled with one or two blips, each dealt with the same way. I let him out at 5 and he's peed and pooed outside already, and run about like a demented thing, with chewy toys. He then went to sleep in the open crate for a while, and he is now snoozing at my feet. My question is this: How do I answer my nagging doubt that I'm creating problems for myself? On the day that I sent her a quick note looking to connect, Deb called me. During that first phone call I asked her with questions about her kennel, her breeding philosophy, and overall questions about Frenchies and how well a puppy would fit in our house. Deb enthusiastically engaged in that discussion with passion, and I knew this was a person who I wanted to work with. I was particularly concerned with breathing issues that these dogs so often has, and Deb was able to answer all of these questions with with ease and details since she has a deep experience in breeding Frenchies, and loves to do it. She very purposefully and knowledgeably sets up her breeding program based on a lot of data, not just a pedigree. She has a fantastic working knowledge of genetics, and tracks her dogs health so well that she can use this data to produce great litters. Her process is impressive. We were able to give Deb our criteria about the kind of dog we were looking for, and what we were not. She immediately spoke about future litters she was planning that would fit our needs. I fully expected to have to wait up at least 6 months for a puppy, but we were able to get a puppy sooner than that. We got Millie, a beautiful Fawn with tons of red accents. She is smaller in size, just as we like, and Deb told us that with her intensity gene, that her coloring was going to be stunning. She was absolutely right. Millie has been an amazing addition to our family, and even keeps up with our labs! Her alert spirit commands the room, and at the same time, she is loving and sweet. Her temperament could not be better. We love that she is a pretty puppy, but more important to looks, her health and temperament are paramount. If you want a dog that will stay puppy-like for a good amount of time, these dogs make a great fit. This, combined with their puppy-like nature, will make them quite the handful for the first few years of their lives. They were originally bred to be border guards. They made an excellent choice, as these dogs are powerful, tenacious, and capable of running anyone down—and keeping them down once caught. Over the years, they began to be bred as pets rather than working dogs. Being bred to work with humans has left them craving companionship. Even when they were being used to hunt down potential border crossers, these dogs were known for forging close bonds with their human handlers. They naturally seek to grow closer to the humans in their lives. Their loyalty can sometimes reach the point of obsessiveness. These dogs sometimes get so attached to their owners that they refuse to leave their sides. They can be protective of that person, even toward other members of the family. To avoid potential issues, nip possessiveness in the bud. They can also be quite tenacious. They were bred to be single-minded, so once they get it in their head to do something like crawl into your lap , they may become fixated on it. German Shepherds in general are considered the third-smartest dog breed, and many people consider the Czech bloodline German Shepherds to be the smartest overall. This intelligence makes them easy to train , but it can also make them mischievous by nature. Are These Dogs Good for Families? This is one pooch that will make you the center of their entire world. They can make terrifying guard dogs, and their very presence in your home may be enough to convince criminals to look elsewhere. You should never leave any dog alone with your children, no matter how loving and trustworthy they may seem. Czechoslovakian German Shepherds can be possessive of certain people, and that could potentially lead to aggression issues, so try to prevent it from happening if you can. Also, like any dog, they can be aggressive if not properly trained and socialized, so prioritize both those things from day one. These dogs can be quite accepting of other pets, but they can also be dominant toward them as well. As a result, you should take things slow when introducing them to new pets. This can also help you by reducing their exercise needs, giving you a little bit of a respite. In fact, there may be potential jealousy issues to work through with another dog. As far as cats and other small pets are concerned, many Czech German Shepherds can come to view them as fellow family members, provided that there is plenty of socialization beforehand. Even so, there are a few things that you should be aware of before you bring one of these sweet pups home. This will ensure that your dog gets all the energy they need while still staying full between meals and keeping regular. Avoid problematic ingredients, like corn, wheat, soy, or animal by-products. These offer little more than empty calories, and you want to keep your German Shepherd lean and trim, as carrying excess weight is terrible for their spine. Overfeeding them should be avoided at all costs. Be careful about how many treats you give them, and limit the table scraps. As a breed, German Shepherds are prone to developing food allergies, so if you notice inflammation, skin issues, or other questionable symptoms, you may want to start investigating their diet. They may do best on a limited-ingredient formula in order to reduce the number of potential culprits. You can also tucker them out mentally by putting them through obedience training. You may also consider signing them up for agility training or similar canine competitions. Just be careful about forcing them to do anything too strenuous. Like all German Shepherds, their low-slung backs put them at risk of joint and spinal issues, so avoid anything that involves tons of running, jumping, or stair climbing. The fact is that you can teach these dogs to do just about anything that you want them to. However, you may need to change up the training regimen often. While their keen intelligence can help them pick up on new commands quickly, it can also make them more likely to get bored with the same old routine. Be careful not to punish them or use other punitive measures when training, as that can lead to aggression issues or other problems. Instead, use positive reinforcement; treats and praise will go much further than choke chains or shock collars. You need to train them as soon as you bring them home as puppies, and the training should be a daily occurrence for as long as you own the dog. Fortunately, their people-pleasing nature ensures that this should never be much of a hassle. Socialization is just as important as training, and you should try to introduce your dog to as many new people and situations as possible. This builds up their confidence and reduces the risk of aggression issues, making them much more pleasant to be around for all involved. It may well seem like their entire coat falls off at the beginning of both winter and summer, so be prepared for that. Limiting baths to times when the dog is visibly dirty is fine. Obesity is terrible for these pups, all the more so because it tends to complicate other existing health issues. We all look forward to taking our puppy for a walk, however it is important not to over-exercise your puppy. In natural play, puppies will romp until they are tired and then stop to lay down for rest. When walking a puppy on a leash, they cannot stop when they normally would for rest. Too much exercise or walking can severely damage their bone and joint structures irreversibly. This should be taken seriously. THE RULE is: No more than 5 minutes of exercise for every month of age So that means, at 2 months old 8 weeks , your puppy only needs to exercise or walk for 10 minutes per day. At 3 months of age 15 minutes of exercise and so on. If you walk your puppy too far too soon, your puppy may develop hip and elbow dysplasia as they get older. Labradors have been known to develop dysplasia younger than other breeds of dogs. In many of these cases, it is often due to environmental factors such as over-exercise, running on hard or strenuous surfaces such as concrete or sand , continual jumping or agility work. Things to avoid with your puppy: No jumping in or out of car, especially larger cars. Lift the dog or use a ramp. No throwing balls or frisbee great distances for your puppy to chase. The sudden stopping and over reaching with the front legs is dangerous. No agility, jumping or flyball before years old Do not let other dogs knock or push the puppy over continually, includes body-slamming Avoid much stair climbing which can increase the risk of dysplasia No fast turns or roll-overs Good exercise: Swimming is great, since there is no weight-bearing impact on their joints. In an adult dog, if a joint experiences a stress such as bending the wrong way or rotating too much, the bones will hold firm and soft tissue will be pulled, resulting in a sprain or tear. Why this matters so much, is that unlike a sprain, injuries to the growth plate may not heal properly or not heal in time for the puppy to grow up straight and strong. Injury to a growth plate can result in a misshapen or shortened limb, which creates an incorrect angle to a joint resulting in yet more future injuries when he grows up, including dysplasia. Spiral fractures of the tibia lower leg bone are very common in puppies. A spiral fracture is where the bottom half of the bone twists in the opposite direction of the top half. Any exercise that puts torque twist on a bone puts the puppy at risk of a fracture. For an example, movements such as twisting and turning suddenly can cause these type of fractures. After this, you should allow them to wander and sniff around. All this time you will keep your dog on the long leash and under your control. Be sure that the free time is less than their focus time. During the socialisation phase, 8 - 16 weeks, you will need both leashes as you expose your labrador pup to other dogs. As you walk your dog, you will come across small and large dogs that are aggressive. Walking on either leash will give your complete control. And it will ensure safety at all time. You new labrador pup has no innate road sense. Walk them, getting close to roads. Expose them to vehicles so that they do not panic. Reward your dog for good behaviour. Remember that dogs register tones and frequencies, not words. Use higher tones to affirm, reward and encourage. You approval is the greatest reward for a Labrador. And some breeders also prevent dogs from jumping for the first twelve months to reduce impact on the shoulder and elbow joints. This may be especially important for some of the heavier breeds of dog, and those that are slow to mature. How far should my puppy walk? But how does that translate to distances walked? If you like to think in distances rather than time, a mile is around steps for an adult human and takes about twenty minutes at a moderate walking speed. So a maximum walk for a four month old Labrador might be about a mile. And of course if you are walking out and back again, that means not taking the dog more than half a mile from your home or car, whichever is your starting point. With young puppies, you need to keep a balance. Think about the overall energy your puppy is expending rather than focusing on walking alone. Walking is only one form of exercise and is no more valuable or important than games or training exercises. If you have been to visit a friend with your five month old pup and their dog has played for half an hour in the garden with yours, your dog does not need a walk as well. Important Considerations When Walking Your Puppy In addition to how far your puppy should walk, there are many things to take into account regarding his excursions. Over weeks, build his endurance. He may have to potty or be thirsty. Avoid the hottest or coldest parts of the day Young puppies can be susceptible to temperature extremes. They may overheat and suffer from heat exhaustion, which can be deadly. In cold weather, puppies may require a coat or sweater to help keep them warm. Disqualification: Parrot mouth or closed mouth with visible teeth, Overshot or wry mouth. Red-Tiger Bulldogs eyes should be medium-sized and almond or round-shaped. They should be well set in and moderately to widely set apart. Lighter eye color is a must. The haw should not be visible. When both eyes are blue in the Red-Tiger Bulldog breed this is called candy eyed and is allowable and bery desirable. Serious faults are crossed or non-symmetrical eyes. Color: lighter eye color is a must. The ears should be set high on the head, medium in size and are preferred cropped. This breed must be cropped when in the show ring. None cropped or natural ears are none show-able. With exceptions given in countries where cropping and docking are illegal. Outside the show ring, they may be drop, semi-prick, or rose when natural. Faults in the ears are hound ears and bat ears. The Red-Tiger Bulldog only comes in varying shades of red or reddish brown-brindle, including, red brindle, chocolate brindle, liver brindle and cinnamon-brindle. A very moderate roach is expectable but not encouraged. The shoulder of a RTB, like the pads of a NFL running back leads the dog into and through the fray of opposition with power, while serving as protection against any excessive contact. The shoulder must appear conditioned, and massive, it should display each of the three parts of the triceps muscle during movement and the deltoids should appear as two moderate to prominent cords traveling from the triceps up into the wither and neck region. The chest of a RTB should appear to be carried proudly and give the impression of a gladiators shield or breastplate leading him into battle. The forearm should appear heavily padded with muscle. The forearm although not having massive muscle, should still display moderate depth and separation between the many muscle groups of this area. The forearm should be tight. It should be very firm to the touch do to the padded muscle aside from the hardness of the bone. The forearm should reveal definition when standing, when seated and must exhibit burst of striation during movement. Each member should be very round both inside and out when standing. The hind quarter should appear charged and ready to explode into action. When in motion, the hind quarter should exhibit several points of definition and appear to propel the animal forward with an extreme level of controlled thrust. Temperament The RTB is trustworthy and discerning, with a desire to under-gird his master. The Red-Tiger Bulldog is always loyal to its family but may not be welcoming to un-escorted house guest. They have a strong prey drive. They get along well with familiar dogs and animals. The Red-Tiger Bulldog needs a firm, consistent and confident owner. This Breed is intelligent and eager to please, yet can be stubborn and push for play time during training sessions. A brisk walk or short play break prior to training sessions tends to burn enough energy to curb this issue. Mild corrections and ample amounts of verbal praise tend to produce a positive response. Overly aggressive physical corrections or dominance can do irreversible physiological damage. Red-Tiger Bulldogs have a great memory and retain lessons quickly. It is imperative that the Red-Tiger Bulldog understands that the human pack members are all superior to them in the pack order. The Red-Tiger Bulldog is outgoing and mild mannered, gentle and submissive to children. They can be aloof with unannounced strangers as their watchdog prowess is expressed, but will calm right down with the reassurance of their master. Height, Weight Height: 22 - 26 inches 56 - 66 cm Weight: 75 - pounds 34 - 50 cm Health Problems The Red-Tiger Bulldog requires a consistent puppy diet during the first year of growth, irregular feeding patterns, overfeeding, or lack of puppy nutrition can result in down pasterns and or knuckling over in the forelegs. Living Conditions The Red-Tiger Bulldog will do okay in an apartment if it is sufficiently exercised. They are relatively inactive indoors and will do best with at least an average-sized yard.
