Advertisement How to choose the best Shampoos for Dogs When buying dog shampoo, there are six essential factors to consider to ensure you choose the best product for your furry friend. Dogs can have varying skin conditions, such as sensitive, dry, oily, or itchy skin, and their coats can range from short to long, straight to curly. Our canine companions are unique, just like us, and they come with different skin and coat types that require specific care. When it comes to selecting the perfect shampoo for your beloved pup, keeping their individual needs in mind is essential. Look for shampoos that nourish their coat and promote natural shine without causing dryness or irritation. Dry Skin: If your pup experiences dry skin, a moisturizing shampoo is the way to go! Look for shampoos that contain ingredients like coconut oil or shea butter to help lock in moisture and prevent further dryness. Oily Skin: For those furballs with oily skin, a shampoo specially designed for their needs is ideal. Seek dog shampoos with gentle cleansing properties to remove excess oil without stripping their precious coat. Natural ingredients like tea tree oil or witch hazel can help balance sebum levels. Dandruff or Flaky Skin: If your doggo has dandruff or flaky skin, an exfoliating shampoo with moisturizing properties can work wonders. Look for shampoos for dogs containing ingredients like salicylic acid to gently exfoliate the skin and reduce flakiness. Long or Curly Coats: For our pals with long or curly coats, keeping those tangles at bay is essential. Look for shampoos with conditioning properties that leave their coat soft and manageable. Some hair cleansers even come with detangling agents, making grooming sessions a breeze! Double Coats: Our furry friends with double coats, such as German Shepherds or Huskies, require special care to manage shedding. Consider hair cleansers that help with shedding, like de-shedding formulas that remove loose hairs and reduce excessive shedding. Puppies: For our adorable little pups, extra gentle care is a must. Choose a shampoo specifically formulated for puppies, as these are mild, hypoallergenic, and perfect for their sensitive skin and coat. A hypoallergenic dog shampoo aims to be gentle on the skin and is made without common allergens or harsh ingredients that could trigger adverse reactions in sensitive dogs. They are free from harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, and dyes that could potentially trigger allergic responses. Reduced Risk of Allergic Reactions: Dogs, just like humans, can have allergies to certain ingredients. Hypoallergenic shampoos aim to minimize the risk of triggering allergic reactions by excluding common allergens from their formulation. Suitable for Regular Use: Hypoallergenic formulations are safe for regular use and can be beneficial for dogs with all skin types, even those without specific sensitivities. Ingredients like oatmeal, aloe vera, coconut oil, chamomile, and tea tree oil can provide soothing properties, moisturize the skin, reduce inflammation, and promote a healthy and shiny coat. Avoid shampoos containing harmful additives, as they can cause adverse reactions and strip the coat of its natural oils. Here are some key natural ingredients to look for in a dog hair cleanser: Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is well-known for its soothing properties. It can help alleviate skin irritations, reduce itching, and promote overall skin health. Oatmeal: Oatmeal is an excellent ingredient for dogs with sensitive or dry skin. It has moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe irritated skin and relieve itchiness. Chamomile: Chamomile is a gentle herb known for its calming effects. In dog shampoos, it can help soothe inflamed skin and relieve itching. Chamomile is particularly beneficial for dogs with sensitive or itchy skin. Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is a natural moisturizer that can nourish the skin and coat. Tea Tree Oil: Tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties that can help combat skin infections and soothe irritated skin. It helps promote healthy skin and a shiny coat. It helps moisturize the skin without leaving a greasy residue. Vitamin E: Vitamin E is an antioxidant that can benefit both the skin and the coat. It helps protect the skin from free radicals and promotes a healthy, shiny coat. Honey: Honey has antimicrobial properties that can aid in healing minor skin irritations and wounds. It can also help retain moisture in the skin and coat. Green Tea Extract: Green tea extract is rich in antioxidants, which can help protect the skin from damage caused by environmental factors. Dogs may feel stressed or uncomfortable during baths, and a gentle shampoo helps make the process more enjoyable for them. Dogs have a slightly acidic pH level in their skin, typically ranging from 5. When the pH balance is disrupted, it can lead to dryness, irritation, and an increased risk of skin infections. If the pH level is too high alkaline , it can strip away natural oils, leading to dry and irritated skin. On the other hand, if the pH level is too low acidic , it may cause itching and discomfort. An imbalanced pH in the shampoo can cause the skin to become more susceptible to allergens and irritants, leading to allergic reactions or skin sensitivities. A pH-balanced formula helps minimize this risk, making it a safer choice for your furry friend. A healthy pH balance is not only vital for the skin but also for the coat. When the skin is in good condition, it promotes the growth of a shiny and lustrous coat. Instead, opt for shampoos with natural, hypoallergenic, and eco-friendly ingredients. Here are some toxic ingredients commonly found in certain dog shampoos that you should avoid: Parabens: Parabens are preservatives used in some shampoos to prolong their shelf life. However, they have been linked to hormonal disruptions and have the potential to cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in dogs. Sulfates: Sulfates are foaming agents used in many cleaning products, including some dog shampoos. Phthalates: Phthalates are often used as fragrance carriers in shampoos. These chemicals are associated with endocrine disruption and have been linked to various health issues in both humans and animals. Artificial Fragrances and Dyes: Synthetic fragrances and dyes can cause skin irritation and allergic reactions in dogs, especially those with sensitive skin. They can react with other ingredients to form harmful compounds, potentially leading to skin irritation. Propylene Glycol: Propylene glycol is used to keep products moist and is sometimes found in shampoos. While it is considered safe in small quantities, excessive use can lead to skin irritation. Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-releasing Preservatives: These are used to extend the shelf life of some products. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen and can also cause skin irritation. Mineral Oil: Mineral oil is a byproduct of petroleum refining and can create a barrier on the skin, preventing it from breathing and potentially causing skin problems. How to use Dog Shampoos When selecting a shampoo form for your dog, you must consider their breed, coat type, skin condition, and any specific grooming needs they may have. Always read the product label, and if your dog has any skin concerns or allergies, consult with your veterinarian for the best shampoo option. There are various forms of dog shampoos available to cater to the diverse needs of different dog breeds. The choice of shampoo form often depends on the specific coat type, skin condition, and grooming requirements of the breed. They come in bottles or containers and are easy to apply. Liquid shampoos are suitable for most dog breeds and coat types. Liquid shampoos often offer various formulations, such as moisturizing, deodorizing, or medicated options, making them versatile for different breed needs. Then, take a little bit of the liquid shampoo in your hand, and gently lather it into their fur. Remember to be extra gentle around their sensitive areas like the eyes, ears, and mouth. Give them a good, soothing massage, making sure to cover all those nooks and crannies! After that, rinse off the shampoo thoroughly to ensure no residue is left behind. Now your pup is all fresh and clean! Foam or Mousse Shampoo: Foam or mousse shampoos are pre-foamed products that do not require water during application. They are ideal for dogs who dislike water baths or for quick touch-ups between regular baths. They work well for small breeds, dogs with anxiety or mobility issues, or those in need of spot cleaning. All you need to do is apply the foam or mousse directly onto their fur. Dry Shampoo: Dry shampoos come in powder or spray form and are designed for dogs who cannot or should not be bathed with water frequently. They are particularly useful for breeds with sensitive skin or those recovering from surgery. Dry shampoos absorb excess oil and dirt from the coat, leaving it refreshed and clean without the need for water. They are also a great option for dogs that love rolling in dirt or mud as you can easily spot-clean and freshen their coat. Using a dry shampoo: Dry shampoo for dogs? The powder will absorb any excess oils and dirt, leaving your furry pal looking and feeling fresh in no time! Waterless Shampoo: Waterless shampoos are pre-moistened and infused with shampoo-like solutions. They are especially useful for breeds with long or dense fur that may be challenging to bathe frequently. Waterless shampoo can also be handy during travel or outings, allowing you to keep your dog clean and smell nice on the go. Using a waterless shampoo: When you need a quick solution without the hassle of a full bath, waterless shampoo is to the rescue! Give them a little pat and brush their fur to get rid of any excess dirt and grime. Medicated Shampoo: Medicated shampoos are specially formulated to address specific skin conditions, such as allergies, bacterial or fungal infections, and seborrhea. These shampoos may contain active ingredients like chlorhexidine, ketoconazole, or benzoyl peroxide. Using a medicated shampoo: When your pup has specific skin issues, a medicated shampoo can be a true lifesaver! If the vet gives the green light, follow their advice on how to use it best. After that, rinse it off thoroughly, and your pup will be on its way to feeling much better! This one is dedicated to all the beloved paw parents who often give up bathing their canine companions. With the right shampoo, bath time can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both you and your furry companion! Happy bathing and bonding! Here are six advantages of using dog shampoo. Healthy Coat and Skin: A good dog shampoo is like a spa day for your furry friend! It helps maintain a healthy coat and skin by removing dirt, debris, and excess oils that can build up over time. Regular baths with a gentle shampoo keep their fur looking shiny and luscious, making them feel and look their absolute best! Many dog shampoos contain moisturizing ingredients that help hydrate and nourish the skin and fur. Hydration is essential to maintaining a soft, shiny, and well-hydrated coat. It prevents dryness and reduces the risk of itchiness or flakiness, making your pup more comfortable and less prone to scratching. Using a pH-balanced shampoo ensures that the natural acidic barrier of their skin is maintained, protecting against potential infections and irritations. A clean and well-hydrated coat is less likely to tangle, mat, or develop knots. Using dog shampoo regularly helps keep their coat healthy, manageable, and easy to groom. It also minimizes shedding by removing loose and dead hair, leaving your pup with a neat and tidy appearance. But fear not, dog shampoo to the rescue! A refreshing bath with the right shampoo can banish those unwanted odors and leave your pup smelling oh-so-fresh and clean! Some dog shampoos incorporate natural extracts, such as aloe vera, chamomile, lavender, or tea tree oil. These extracts not only have pleasant scents of their own but also possess properties that can help mask or eliminate odors. Many dog shampoos contain deodorizing agents specifically designed to neutralize odors. Citrus and herbal extracts, like lemon or eucalyptus, are often used in dog shampoos for their natural fragrance and antibacterial properties. These extracts can help combat odor-causing bacteria and leave a refreshing scent. Advanced dog shampoos may incorporate specialized odor-neutralizing technology. This technology uses specific chemical processes to eliminate odor molecules at a molecular level, ensuring long-lasting freshness. Dog shampoos with long-lasting fragrances help keep your pup smelling great between baths. These fragrances adhere to the fur, releasing a pleasant scent over time, even after the bath is over. Flea and Tick Protection: Fleas and ticks are unwelcome guests that can cause our furry friends a lot of discomfort. Thankfully, some dog shampoos come with special ingredients that help repel these pesky critters. Regular use of flea and tick shampoo can act as a line of defense against these unwanted hitchhikers, keeping your pup itch-free and happy! With proper care and preventive measures, you can help keep your furry friend safe and comfortable from the nuisance of fleas and ticks. A good dog shampoo with flea and tick protection may contain specific active ingredients designed to target these parasites. Some common active ingredients found in such shampoos include: Pyrethrin: Derived from chrysanthemum flowers, pyrethrin is a natural insecticide that is effective against fleas and ticks. Pyrethroids: These are synthetic versions of pyrethrins that are commonly used in flea and tick products for dogs. Permethrin: A synthetic chemical similar to pyrethroids, permethrin is commonly used to repel and kill fleas and ticks. Natural Essential Oils: Some organic or plant-based dog shampoos use essential oils like neem oil, citronella, eucalyptus, or cedarwood, which have natural flea and tick-repellent properties. Hydration and Moisture: Just like us, our pups can experience dry skin, especially in harsh weather conditions. The right dog shampoo can be formulated to provide much-needed hydration, leaving their skin nourished and their coat soft and touchable. Regular use of such a shampoo can contribute to improved fur texture, reduced shedding, and an overall more pleasant grooming experience for your furry companion. Organic and plant-based dog shampoos often contain natural oils like coconut oil, olive oil, or jojoba oil. These oils are rich in essential fatty acids that can penetrate the fur and skin, providing deep moisturization. Nourished and hydrated fur is less prone to dryness, brittleness, and split ends. Unlike some harsh chemical shampoos, they preserve the essential oils that keep the fur healthy and glossy. Organic and plant-based shampoos often contain antioxidants and vitamins, like vitamins E and C, which can nourish the fur and skin. These nutrients help combat free radicals, promoting a healthier and more radiant coat. Gentle on Sensitive Skin: Some pups have more sensitive skin than others, and using regular shampoo might cause irritation. But fear not! Many dog shampoos are specifically designed to be gentle on sensitive skin. They contain soothing ingredients that clean without causing any discomfort, making bath time a relaxing and pleasant experience for your furry buddy. Seek shampoos that prominently feature organic or plant-based ingredients. Natural extracts like aloe vera, chamomile, oatmeal, coconut oil, and lavender are often gentle on sensitive skin and can provide soothing properties. A balanced pH helps maintain the natural acidic barrier of the skin, reducing the risk of irritation. Choose a shampoo with little to no fragrance. Each bath is a chance to show them how much they mean to you, to create lasting memories, and to strengthen the unbreakable connection you share. As you massage the shampoo into their coat, you share a moment of pure connection. They might even give you a grateful lick or two, expressing their love and appreciation. And as you rinse off the shampoo, their coat feels soft and fresh, just like your heart is feeling right now. The best part? After bath time, when your pup shakes off the excess water and does a happy dance, you share a laugh together, cherishing these special moments. As you towel-dry them and they snuggle close, you both feel the love and warmth of your bond growing stronger. Do you represent a health, nutrition, beauty, or fitness brand? These are the ones that foam thick leather to clean the dog properly. It removes dirt, dust, and other particles from the coat and will make your labrador puppy clean. Medicated Shampoo: If your labrador puppy has explicit skin conditions, there might be shampoos out there extraordinarily designed to help. If you are not sure what to buy on your own, then consult with the vet. Look for shampoos that can assist with parasitic or contagious diseases, skin sensitivities, skin irritations, or seborrhea. Dry Shampoo: There are various situations when you might not have a lot of time to bath them thoroughly or if you are traveling and there is no water availability. For these types of situations, dry shampoos are a boon in disguise. These can be used without water, and you can give a quick bath to your puppy. They will also reduce the prevalence of tangles, knots, and mats. To not harm their coat, their shampoo should likewise have a neutral pH. Search for shampoos that have a pH level of almost 7, which is neutral. This is them attempting to rub off the unwanted smell. Also, heavy fragrances are not ideal for puppies as their skin is more sensitive than adult dogs. And fragrances can irritate puppies. Thus, good dog shampoos should attempt to neutralize scents as opposed to simply masking smells and odors. Ingredients Similarly, as it is valid for humans, harsh synthetic and chemicals through the skin can hurt the puppies. Harsh chemicals ought to be avoided by buying shampoos with natural ingredients. Key ingredients to stay away from include phthalates, formaldehyde, isothiazolinones, and nitrosamines. Additives Similarly, as you can purchase shampoos and skin cleaning agents that guarantee to hydrate your skin and keep it looking new, dog shampoos will include skin-protecting additives such as oatmeal, Aloe Vera, or vitamin E that is intended to hydrate their skin and keep coats shiny. This can add many advantages for your dog, as long as the ingredients are natural and will not do any harm to your labrador puppy. With regular baths and keeping them clean, you can ensure that they do not spread any infections in the house. There are so many choices in the market. The topics change day to day depending on current events and articles we have read. However, one subject that will never be allowed to fade away is what breed is best and why. You see, there are so many weird and wonderful breeds in this world of ours that it is almost impossible to have even a basic knowledge of them all. No matter the direction the conversation steers, it will always find its true north and you will eventually discover yourself talking about the one breed everyone knows. I am talking, of course, about the German Shepherd. They come in all shapes and sizes, some heavily muscled, others wiry and athletic. Their coloring is as versatile as their build, with the American Kennel club listing eight official colors ranging from solid white to solid black. Some have thicker coats than others and their posture can be different depending on the dog. However, no matter how versatile in appearance this breed will be, a decoy, a suspect and even cat people know when they are dealing with a German Shepherd. About the German Shepherd German Shepherds possess many fine attributes that make them ideal working dogs. Armed with intelligence, loyalty, trainability and endurance, it is no wonder that police and military canine handlers all around the world consider their German Shepherds more than just a dog. German Shepherds utilized as working dogs is nothing new. They were purposely bred from the beginning of their origin to assist man. In the late s, An ex-cavalry captain and former student of the Berlin Veterinary College, Max Von Stephanitz had a strong belief that dogs should be bred specifically for working. While attending a dog show in , he witnessed a dog named Hektor Linksrhein perform. Hektor was a product of selective breeding and fulfilled the requirements of what Von Stephanitz was looking for. Horand became the first registered German Shepherd and became the standard of future breeding programs with other registered dogs with the same desirable traits. The breed grew slowly in popularity and clubs for the development of the breed began to form. Eventually the breed would be exported all around the world. They were also used to carry supplies, ammunition, messages, cables and first aid between trenches. Many of the allied forces were so impressed with the dogs that they captured Shepherds to take home with them after the war had ended. After much success in the First World War, the German Shepherd was once again put to the test for the Second and was pressed into military service in large numbers. This time, a large number of these dogs were being trained to also detect various types of unexploded devices. Since its first performance in the First World War with an impressive repeat performance for the World War II, the German Shepherd has been used in many major conflicts and has been recruited into law enforcement agencies all around the world. It comes as no surprise that there is always somebody in need of a reliable working German Shepherd. Training these dogs is no daunting task; it is in fact a pleasure and enjoyable experience. It is so rewarding to experience working with a dog breed that so consistently packs those desirable features as highlighted before. Intelligence, loyalty, endurance, trainability, the German Shepherd indeed has it all! Using these genetic traits we regularly train German Shepherds for a wide variety of scent tasks such as cadaver detection on land and water, human search and rescue on variable terrains, and explosives and narcotics detection just to name a few. We also work daily with our Shepherds to supply the constant need of reliable patrol dogs. If you have a desire to put a dog to work, chances are we have a German Shepherd that will fulfill your desires. All Rights Reserved Privacy Policy. Because German Shepherd puppy care is just as important as drive development. After the nervous system is set in 21 days there are several weeks where the puppies become slightly independent of their mother. If a puppy is separated from the rest of the litter for up to 24 hours it can have long-lasting effects such as insecurity, reactivity, and separation anxiety. When the shepherd pup is 7 weeks he can begin positive reinforcement and even gentle use of a training collar. The Starmark training collar is an excellent choice. This is also the time the pup can go to his new pet parent. Most people have at least heard of the fear imprint stage of 8 weeks or critical period. But thinking generally, the more sensitive puppy bonding age overall ends at 12 weeks. So if you were looking for signs your dog imprinted on you, just make sure you spent meaningful time with him at this early age. When you think of German shepherds protecting their owners either in class or in videos, consider who is making the decisions, The dog or his owner? A dog protecting his owner can have mixed emotions. And he would perceive it that way because he depends completely on the owner. But in general, he should know his place as a dog. However, look at the body language when you give your dog affection. Generally, the ears should be back and the tail doing somewhat of a lower wag. Another example would be not allowing your dog to bring you a toy. In this case, the dog is initiating interaction. Apart from bones, chew, or small dog toys, interactive toys like tug of war dog ropes should be put away and presented by the owner for play. After the exercise, the tug toy should be put up. Other things you should initiate are outdoor access, where the dog sleeps when it is time to eat, and what direction he goes on the leash. German Shepherd Puppy Obedience Training If you are planning as little training as possible to protect your family, at least consider a strong recall and technical leash handling. That said, here I listed the following obedience commands for reliable German Shepherd defense training. Understand How to teach a dog to Come without treats. You should begin with some food reward but then move up to a prong collar for dogs. Herm Sprenger size 3. And they can already begin with that same size at a few months old. Eventually, you will need your dog off-leash training. Your dog will jump the gun but to be able to turn around instantly and come back to you is important. Learn How to teach a dog to heel. And not because your Shepherd needs to look pretty on a field. But because your shepherd needs to have a point of reference. He needs to stay behind your left ankle so he knows where you are, not next to you as in competitive sports. A couple more benefits to having your dog parallel with you — He will naturally be in more of a defense mode being closer to you, and facing the same direction as he will be able to see the threat. Know-How to teach a dog to sit. This will help the dog be stationary. An example scenario for this would be a very protective shepherd sitting 6 feet behind you. Another scenario would be if your dog likes to bite, put him into a sit to build self-control then release him for the bite. The bite itself is the biggest reward for many protection dogs that enjoy it. The last tip I will give for this command is to have your dog sit from the bite itself. Many dogs do not have a good release command but would sit and let go of someone or a bite suit. Understand How to teach a dog to leave it. It is a great way for a dog to disengage with something while not having to call him back to you. For example, maybe your dog hypothetically went for the wrong guy when there was a guy closer to you he should have gone for. Learn How to teach your dog to drop it. Your dog should not be confused between disengaging with something leave it and letting go of something he already has possession of out. As I mentioned earlier, start his commands gently as early as 7 weeks, and take your time! Do not rush this, lest you sacrifice performance. Is your dog already older? How to train a 2-year-old German shepherd for obedience is the same movement. Meaning that you would have the same range of motions to position your dog for compliance. To be on the safe side with an adult male, make sure you are solid on canine leadership. Knowing how to show your dog you are the pack leader is essential for obedience. How can you command his physical body if you do not have his mind? You are helping develop what is. I will give you a couple of exercises to do. For the first one, get a tug toy with a handle on the end of it. Then connect a Leash to it. From there, move backward in an engaged manner with your dog. You are essentially saying chase me. And your puppy must always come in for the bite. Do not jam the tug toy in his mouth. You have most likely seen this mistake before. However, if the pup attempts to rebite regrip let him. You are working toward the full mouth bite. Once his mouth is on the dog tug, give it to him but continue to hold the leash handle, never giving him full possession. When he moves back, minimize your tension to allow his muscles to contract. When he moves forward, move your arm away from you or toward you so the leash tension stays. That continuous tension maintains the challenge. Once he tries hard to pull to the ground, shake, or move back forcefully, let your leash go limp. This will give him a win and encourage the behavior. This will not teach your dog to be the boss of you, by the way. That would be you allowing him to take the tug toy with him at the end, which you should avoid by putting the jute, nylon, or leather tug up. Another tip about leash tension; if your dog is into the exercise but not pulling very hard, increase your lead tension. Ideally, in a few seconds, you would have pulled the tug away unless he pulled harder, thus earning a win. Usually, you would pull in an upward motion for this. For the 2nd exercise, The owner would not move back with the dog as in the first exercise. Usually if he swings it around, teasing the dog it will create an excited dog. From there he can swing it in front of the dog and get him to bite. The idea is to draw out the bite. Ideally you would not want the tug going at the dog directly. Puppies can also start bite sleeves very early but I do not recommend the owner wear the sleeve. And the same concepts apply. The dog gets wins. The dog flirt pole Is another dog toy to develop your dogs drive. Simply have your puppy or adult GSD Chase it and give it to him as a reward by going limp. Your dog will most likely take his mouth off of it, try to shred it and put his paw on it. This is when you can take it back and begin another chase, leading him back and forth or in circles. When to Introduce the 1st Agitator Some German Shepherd working line puppies Will defend owners or at least themselves at 12 weeks of age. I have personally worked with puppies like this from various breeds that have fiery temperaments, even younger than that. Although for most dogs this is not normal. Different levels of agitation should be introduced to your puppy at various periods of his development. And the bite gets better. That said, the amount of stress you put on a dog should be measured by their level of maturity. Every dog is a little different. And the more insecure the dog is genetically, the longer you should wait to do GDS protection training. Ideally, you might consider waiting until 6 months to a year to bring in a agitator that challenges your dog and you. This is where you will truly find out if your German Shepherd will protect you. Not to defend himself or your house or his back yard or to bite because of prey drive. German Shepherd protection is very powerful. Think about it. If someone was threatening you audibly in public you may have plenty of options to run away. But if someone grabbed your toddler you might try to hurt them, quickly and without hesitation. Consider beginning this exercise in a narrow pathway where the dog cannot ignore the situation. A very narrow alley or even a hallway in a building. Have the dog on a leash and harness or at least a very wide flat collar. Leather Collar is best. The dog can either be tied to something, in the control of a family member or a very good friend. The owner would be acting out as The victim of an attack. The person hitting the owner can use a Styrofoam cylindrical object like a flotation device or even a wiffleball bat. But the attack should look real. The owner should lay on the ground and be completely helpless, squirming and arms flailing. The instant the dog growls or barks at the attacker they should immediately disappear. After the dog is predictable, replicate the scenario and add more pressure to the dog. For example, A little closer to the attack or the dog has to bark more aggressively to make the bad guy go away. Also, after the dog predictably barks for the first time, add a verbal command. Again, the motivation is natural so most dogs will already bark. You do not need to teach When the dog gets close enough he should have a dog muzzle for biting purposes. A good rule of thumbs, if the GSD is making contact, he would bite. To Train your German shepherd to protect to his full potential, get a trainer with a dog bite suit. This will help him break past some of the taboos of putting his mouth on human skin without the muzzle on. Dogs definitely know when the suit is on and off and some make a game out of it. Just a final thought. Do you see the difference from what I described here vs next to his owner while protecting? German Shepherd protection training cost Can quickly turn into the thousands. But if you have your dog under control first personal protection does not have to be expensive at all. German Shepherd Guard Dogs I will differentiate German Shepherd guard dog training from personal protection for the convenience of categorization. Obviously there is some crossover where another expert could disagree. German guard dogs already have it in the breed. And a guard dog is just that. He is not protecting you while holding down the fort. Does your dog already bark at people when they come over? Does he scan your yard? A simple exercise would involve a person acting suspicious at your door. You can also stage it where the person steps into the home or into the yard. But the dog should be on a leash and harness. Otherwise if your dog was off leash he may not pursue the guy. Once the dog begins to bark, the guy should run away. So if personal protection is instinct regarding the owner, and to guard is to be like a junkyard dog, an attack dog would go for anyone on the street also called green dogs. And of course a given dog can meet all that criteria. How to train your German shepherd to attack is called training a dog in defense. This is because he is not actually protecting you or the house. He is defending himself! So you are literally learning How to make your German shepherd aggressive. This comes with a huge responsibility. You should have your dog fully trained in a couple commands first and muzzle trained first. Begin by having your dog on a harness or a wide collar and leash. You would be the one holding the other end of the leash. Have a planned stranger approach him from around 30 feet away. They should walk slowly toward him. Their shoulders should be squared with the dog and staring at him as if they were going to pick a fight. The strange person would refuse to look to the right or left. Once the dog growls or barks the person should run away out of sight. While the dog is snarling you should praise him. Once the guy disappears, give your dog affection. After the guy returns and you add a verbal command, observe. Does your dog bark immediately? Once he starts to get better put more pressure on him. Eventually were the guy would get closer and the dog would need a muzzle. You can work on the physiology of his bite with a suit. Although I would not be the one to wear the suit with my own dog. Otherwise the dog will think he cannot make the threat go away. He will end up with a dog that gives up. So yes, only do few minute sessions for this at the beginning. In that case your dog would already have went for the bite. German shepherd police training German Shepherd police dogs have very high prey drive. There is no fear involved when chasing and are experiencing a predatory state of mind. These lines of shepherds often come out fairly dominant as well. They begin as a Working line German Shepherd puppy. And that is their job they continue doing. To give you a brief idea of dog selection within police and military dogs, look at the this excerpt from the Second World War. During World War II 40, dogs were recruited, 18, were distributed and out of those About where we turn because of temperament or some other physical problem. Ultimately, about 10, were trained for the military Waller, .To simply sum things up, a personal protection dog is taken up with his owner. His master is his world.

The average gestation period of Goldendoodles is 63 days, although it could vary from 58 to 68 days. When calculating the number of days of pregnancy, you should bear in mind that conception is often hard to ascertain. This means the act of mating is not a reliable way to start measuring the gestation period. The gestation period refers to the time between when the fetus was conceived and birth. The gestation period of Goldendoodles may vary if the female has been bred several times or if the eggs are fertilized by the sperm a day or two after mating. It is calculated from the first day of ovulation and not during the day of mating. When Can Goldendoodles Get Pregnant? The minimum age for Goldendoodles to get pregnant is years of age. For some female dogs that are in heat, the vaginal discharge will become apparent several days after heat has begun. The amount of vaginal discharge during heat varies from dog to dog. As the cycle progresses, the color and appearance of the vaginal discharge change. The bloody discharge during the early part of the cycle eventually becomes thin, watery, and light red in color as days pass. How Long is a Goldendoodle in Heat? Conclusion: How many puppies do Goldendoodles have? It is typical for a female Goldendoodle to birth puppies per litter, with up to two litters per year. They can do this for around years, as long as their health is adequate. Several different components influence the size of a Goldendoodles litter. These items can include genetics, health, age, size, and diet. One way to ensure a large litter is to feed your dog a healthy diet consisting of high-quality ingredients and adequate portions. This act will allow her to get all the necessary nutrients needed to sustain herself and her babies during conception and pregnancy. Doing so will also enable a quicker recovery, which will create more extraordinary conditions for future litters. You also want to ensure healthy birth practices with the appropriate veterinary care. Doing this twice a year for multiple years can also take a toll on their bodies, especially without proper care. Just like a human mother, having pregnancies too close together can cause health issues or increase the risk for problems down the road. Calculating Litter Size Two super small brown or chocolate Goldendoodles Being that a Goldendoodle is part Golden Retriever and part Poodle, there are variants when you look at the exact breed of Poodle. With Golden Retrievers, there are different sub-breeds, but they are all quite similar. Even outside of the size variations, their care and temperament also have other characteristics. Whereas a Toy Poodle has a small dog mentality, the Standard Poodle can be more friendly and inviting. And just how does this play into the litter size of a Goldendoodle? The type of Poodle that the Golden Retriever mates with will significantly affect the number of babies conceived. The Golden Retriever breed has eight puppies per litter on average. However, poodles vary based on type. Some Poodle breeds can produce up to five babies in a litter. Others may only birth one of two babies with each pregnancy. Therefore, the parenting genetic combination and the lineage between the two come into play to dictate the litter amount. When you combine this with the many other factors that influence litter sizes health, age, diet, genetics, height , it is truly a guessing game until the birth occurs. The more pregnancies that occur will bring larger litter sizes as long as the dog is in good health and receives appropriate veterinary care. Therefore, do not be disappointed if the first Goldendoodle litter results in a small number of puppies. Future births will likely turn out more babies. When Breeding Can Start Those who make a living out of breeding animals often want to get started as soon as possible. It is worth knowing that Goldendoodles tend to go into heat at around six months of age. This is true for a smaller Toy Goldendoodle and Mini Goldendoodle as well. Going into heat means that their bodies are capable of reproducing, similar to women who start puberty. However, it would be best if you always waited until at least the second heat cycle before attempting to breed. The reasoning is because despite being able to conceive and birth them, the dog is not at an appropriate maturity due to their young age. Without proper care from their mother, the puppies could suffer from poor health or even die. As you learn about animals and the life processes they go through, it is easy to see the connections between animals and humans. Humans are capable of producing at a young age, similar to animals. However, we are discouraged from doing so due to the mental and emotional levels needed to parent a dependent being adequately. This instance is just one situation where there is overlap between species, and it points out how similar things in life can indeed be. This need pertains to both the mother and the father. If you again compare this situation to humans, it is similar to how fertility is higher in younger couples. Our eggs and sperm are of higher quality and mobility in our youth. Therefore, we often find it more simplistic to conceive in our earlier years. This case is the same for dogs. As they age, the quality of their reproductive components goes down, making it more difficult to conceive. In their earlier years, the process of conceiving is much easier. This is true of the female dog and male dog. On the flip side and in similarity to humans, as dogs age, they are likely to give birth to larger litters. This likelihood is based on whether the dog has previously given birth or not. If they have and conceive again in later years, it is of the high probability that they will have a large hybrid dog litter. Correspondingly, if a human gets pregnant later in life, the chances of conceiving multiples go up. There is a higher likelihood of a woman naturally conceiving more than one baby at a time over the age of .For Goldendoodle dogs, this age is five. Issues That Negatively Affect Litter Size There are a lot of factors that go into a successful birth and the size of a litter. There are also several things to stay away from if you want to achieve the best-case scenario. Having a calm and serene environment lays the best foundation for pregnancy, even in canines. Although the idea makes sense, conception is more likely if it is done naturally. In this way, it is more conducive to the actions of the body and the natural process that happens when in heat. As a dog owner this is unacceptable, and not the actions of a reputable breeder. Genetics: We have talked about how breed genetics can influence litter size. However, it does need to be understood that just because the parents of a dog conceived quickly or birthed large litters does not mean that the children of those dogs will have the same fate. As we know, genetic can often skip generations or not show back up at all. These anomalies can happen within dogs as well. Poodles typically have puppies per litter but this can vary. Inbreeding: There is a certain percentage of genetic similarities that are acceptable to breed between. Some people whoa re trying to create the perfect doodle puppy designer dog cut corners and make mistakes. Inbreeding is dangerous because of the medical issues it can cause in dogs that are a product of the situation. In the search for a F1b Goldendoodle or multigen Goldendoodle mny breeders cut corners and run out of unrelated dog. This is unacceptable. A reputable breeder cuts NO corners. Inbreeding can also cause problems for future litters, inbred or not. The reason is because of the abnormalities that trickle down like predispotion to hip dysplasia or poorly formed body parts. Because of this, smaller Goldendoodles litter size can become more prevalent. With Goldendoodles being a highly desired breed with high demand, it is vital to remember the key concepts above. Successful breeding and large litter sizes result from careful practices. Conclusion: Dog breeding is a complex subject, affected by many different elements. It is important to remember that you can only control so much and that having healthy dogs to give to new families is the desired result. Breeding dogs, especially popular breed types, is a form of income for many people. Because of this, larger litter sizes equals higher profits. However, it is essential to remember that dogs are not machines. They are members of the family. Their health and safety are a priority, just like yours. On average, a Goldendoodle female gives birth to three to eight puppies. This number is an estimate because several factors affect the litter size. The dog generations matter when estimating the litter size. Arriving at an accurate answer requires first answering these two questions. First, how many puppies do Golden retrievers usually have? Golden retrievers produce eight puppies on average. The next question to consider asking yourself is this: how many puppies do Poodles have? Poodle dogs tend to have more babies as their size increases. Hence, a toy Poodle produces three puppies, while a miniature one produces five. But what number of puppies do standard Poodles have? Standard Poodles are the biggest dogs in the lot. They produce about seven puppies in one litter. A Goldendoodle dog should produce a range of three to eight puppies. Litters can be bigger than eight or smaller than three. Nobody can accurately answer this, how many puppies do Goldendoodles have? It is a matter of chance. When your dog gives birth, you can tell if your estimations are correct. What can increase or reduce the litter size? Goldendoodles are some of the loveliest Doodles. No person can mind having many puppies in a litter. Sadly, you might expect many puppies only to get three or fewer. A secret to having a larger litter size lies in the degree of care you offer the female dog. Although you cannot control some biological factors affecting fertility, you should play your part. Goldendoodle size Generally, the litter size depends on the Goldendoodle size. A poodle is the determinant of size. Earlier, we noted that Poodles have more babies as their sizes increase. Thus, larger Goldendoodles come from mating a standard-sized Poodle and a Golden Retriever. These hybrid dogs will produce more puppies than miniature and medium Goldendoodles. Here is the breakdown: How many puppies does a standard Goldendoodle have? How many dogs does a medium Goldendoodle produce? How many puppies does a mini Goldendoodle have? Goldendoodle generations We already told you how generations could affect the number of puppies a mother can have. The offspring can be big or small depending on the percentage of parent genes in a Goldendoodle. Where the gene ratio is , you might have fewer or many puppies. If a dog inherits more dominant fertility genes from its Golden Retriever parent, it might have a big litter. In most cases, though, puppies have more Poodle genes. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have based on this notion? If Poodle genes are dominant, the litter size will be three to eight puppies. We must also consider this: What number of puppies does a standard Poodle have? Standard Poodles have seven puppies on average. You will be at an advantage if mating Goldendoodles that came from a Standard Poodle parent. The odds are high that the litter will be big. Food A female Goldendoodle needs to eat enough calories each day. It also needs to eat a balanced diet to get fertile many times. Likewise, pregnant dogs require a healthy diet to deliver puppies with higher odds of survival. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have when eating a proper diet? First, a young female dog should always eat a healthy meal to better its chances of going into heat. Provide the best dog food for Goldendoodle during pregnancy time to get healthy puppies. Secondly, the dog should eat a more nutritious minerals and vitamin diet when pregnant and after giving birth. If you follow these easy rules, your Goldendoodle might sire more puppies. Unhealthy mothers deliver smaller litters and weak puppies that may not make it to adulthood. Current health status How many puppies do Goldendoodles have if their health status is good? Healthy Goldendoodles produce more puppies than unhealthy ones. For instance, your Goldendoodle boasts a lot of mental and physical energy. It needs proper physical and mental stimulation to get fit and feel happy. A Goldendoodle requires sixty minutes of exercise daily and some quiet time. Another determinant of good health is the number of medical checkups you offer your dog. Before mating your Goldendoodle, call a professional veterinarian for a thorough medical checkup. After breeding your pet successfully, keep taking it for pregnancy testing and evaluations. A veterinarian can guide you on how to care for a pregnant Goldendoodle pet. The pet does not need regular prenatal checkups like humans. Take the pet to a vet in the beginning and toward the end of a pregnancy. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have at birth? A health checkup done two to three weeks before birth ensures that the mother can deliver all puppies safely. If the mother and litter are healthy, wait for the birth date to deliver the puppies at home. As with humans, puppy deliveries are not always safe. As anything can happen, visit your veterinarian if an emergency crops up. Whether the dog delivers at home or not, it requires a thorough medical checkup about forty-eight hours after. The vet will verify if the mother and puppies are doing fine. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have if the pregnancy ends well? The dog might not have stillbirths, which means all the puppies in the womb will come out. A younger woman has optimal fertility levels, unlike an older woman. Also, an older woman than thirty-five years has higher odds of carrying twins, triplets, or other multiple pregnancies. Hence, how many puppies do Goldendoodles have based on age? Younger Goldendoodles with smaller body sizes reach maturity earlier than their larger counterparts. Also, older Goldendoodles can have more puppies than younger mothers. Nonetheless, an older dog should be super healthy to avoid having weak puppies in one litter. Younger dogs produce fewer but stronger puppies and can come on heat faster than older dogs. Breeding conditions The environment in which you breed your dog can determine the litter size it would produce. If the female dog has stress, it will deliver fewer puppies. It might also deliver weak puppies with limited chances of reaching adulthood. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have in favorable breeding conditions? Your dog can have a bigger litter if it has no stress. Human mothers respond poorly to stress during pregnancy. Some suffer from miscarriages, hypertension, and more. Dog mothers are similar in that they can lose a pregnancy due to stress. To help your Goldendoodle get pregnant and not suffer a miscarriage, provide a nurturing environment. Inbreeding The choice of dogs to mate with is crucial when answering this part: how many puppies do Goldendoodles have? If you keep mating the same related dogs, the chances of having smaller litters are high. Inbreeding leads to genetic defects in dogs and other animals. Additionally, the resulting offspring might inherit health issues from the family lineage. The more health problems the dogs have, the lower their survival chances. Even surviving puppies might later pass bad genes to their offspring. The solution to inbreeding is finding a male from another dog family. Artificial insemination can lead to higher or lower-quality puppies. It may also decrease the litter size. Dogs sire more puppies when they mate naturally. Besides, the professional conducting artificial insemination should use more than one dog to increase the litter size. When should you allow your dog to mate for the first time? A mating cycle can affect the puppies numbers. As we mentioned, a female can reach its first mating cycle at six months. Do not give your female to a male dog at this age. Its body is too young and might not have adequate eggs. Besides, a young dog can develop pregnancy complications and deliver in an emergency. These factors can lower their odds of having many puppies. It is better to have your Goldendoodle reproduce at twenty-four months or after. After the eighth to the tenth year, it is safer to forbid your Goldendoodle to have other litters. It can develop risky health issues and die before its fifteenth year. A Goldendoodle should get pregnant in its second or third cycle. Their gestation period is sixty-one to sixty-four days. As we earlier said, the type of Poodle used to breed your Goldendoodle can affect its future offspring. If the Poodle is of medium size, chances are that the mother would produce five to six puppies. Again, if the mother has stronger reproduction genes from its Golden Retriever parent, her chances of reaching six puppies go up. A Goldendoodle dog will deliver three to eight puppies in their first litter. The more Poodle genes the dogs have, the higher the odds of having a smaller litter. But when considering standard Poodles, the litter gets bigger. Three or eight puppies are not standard figures but estimates. Ever asked this: how many puppies do Labradoodles have? Labradoodles have twelve puppies per litter. They produce a larger litter than Goldendoodles. Miniature Goldendoodles can have three to 4 puppies per litter. They produce the least number of puppies on average. What is the Best Age to Breed a Goldendoodle? The correct age to mate your Goldendoodle dog is 24 months. Six to twelve months is usually the first cycle in most dogs. It is not the best age because the pet is too young to nurture puppies. The second or third cycle is the best time. Related Posts. Goldendoodles only appeared in the s and at the moment they seem set to become the number one Doodle dogs. How many different types of Goldendoodle are there? Basically, there are two types of Goldendoodle, and this depends on the size of the Poodle in the mix. If a Golden Retriever mates with a standard Poodle inches tall , their offspring will be a Standard Goldendoodle. However with a miniature Poodle 13 to 15 inches tall or a toy Poodle less than 10 inches tall , the result is a Mini Goldendoodle. On average, Goldendoodles are 20 — 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 90 lbs. What is the average Goldendoodle litter size? To understand this we must first talk about how the size of a dog affects its litter size. Large dogs tend to have larger litters simply because their body is big enough to carry more puppies at a time. This explains why Chihuahua and Pomeranian females have puppies on average, while a big Bullmastiff averages 5 — 13 puppies per litter. For Golden Retrievers the average litter size is 8 puppies. Since this is the average number, you can expect a Golden Retriever to give birth to as little as four puppies or an impressive 12 puppies at a time. With Poodles, the average litter size depends on the type of Poodle. Standard Poodles have six puppies on average, miniature Poodles have five, while a toy Poodle might have 1 — 3 puppies per litter. Mini Goldendoodles can produce 3 — 8 puppies per litter, which takes us to an average of five. Standard Goldendoodles can have more than five puppies per size, but you must understand this is not an exact science and there are other factors that come into play. While older females tend to produce larger litters, the same cannot be said about the father. An older dog might be affected by sper mobility issues so the litter that comes from such a union might be small. In general, a female dog is fertile the first time she goes into heat, which happens between 6 — 12 months of age. For Golden Retriever it is recommended that they mate for the first time around the age of two, which corresponds to the third heat cycle. The same goes for Poodles of any type. A female that does not mate until the age of five will generally have small litters for the rest of her life. In some cases, it is recommended to mate a female twice in a row and then give her a break for a cycle or two to allow her to regain her strength. These are general recommendations that apply to all dog breeds, including Goldendoodles. A female dog can have puppies throughout her life, but it is not recommended. As far as Golden Retrievers or Poodles are concerned, a female should only be mated until the age of 8 at the most. After the age of , a pregnancy can have complications, putting the life of the mother in danger. What is the difference between first generation and second generation Goldendoodles? To put it simply F1 means first generation Goldendoodle. F2 means second generation Goldendoodle. The main difference between F1 and F2 is that first generation Goldendoodles benefit from the so-called Hybrid Vigor. On the other hand, with F1 Goldendoodles it is more difficult to predict what traits they will inherit from their parents, in terms of appearance or personality. An F1 might have a smooth coat like a Golden Retriever or a curly one, typical of Poodles. Some still shed quite a lot, like their Retriever parent, while others are hypoallergenic and barely shed at all. F2 Goldendoodles are more predictable and they tend to shed less than first generation dogs. At what age should a Goldendoodle puppy be weaned? If you have a litter of brand new Goldendoodles you might be wondering when they are going to grow up a bit and be less dependent on their mother. By 6 weeks a puppy should be completely weaned. At what age will a Goldendoodle puppy be ready to go to their new home? True, in terms of feeding needs puppies are ready to move on at around 6 weeks of age, but they should not be separated from their mother and their siblings quite so early. What you need to keep in mind is that this period is crucial in terms of socializing and a dog starts doing this with his siblings. It is also a period when a puppy learns about getting and sending signals to other dogs, and this is very important for their future training as well as for their ability to interact with other dogs later in life. Typically, these dogs are bred to take the best traits from their parents. Even inside the same litter, puppies can vary widely. Other Similar Posts. We will also talk about some of the factors that can affect this number. The average litter size for Goldendoodles is three to eight puppies. However, this number can range from one to twelve puppies. Litters of ten or more are considered large, while litters of four or less are considered small. There are a few factors that can affect the litter size of Goldendoodles. Some of these include: Stressful Environment: One of the most common reasons for small litter size is stress. If the dam mother is in a high-stress environment during pregnancy, she is more likely to have a smaller litter. This is because the stress hormone cortisol can cause the dam to abort some of her fetuses. Younger dogs tend to have larger litters than older dogs. This is because their bodies are more capable of handling multiple pregnancies. If the dam is not in good health or if she is not getting enough nutrients, she is more likely to have a smaller litter. Additionally, if the dam has had previous litters that were small, she is more likely to have another small litter. This is because her body may not be able to produce enough milk for multiple puppies. Genetics: Genetics plays a huge role in litter size. Some breeds of dogs are more likely to have larger litters than others. For example, Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers tend to have larger litters than toy breeds. Additionally, some individual dogs may be predisposed to having smaller litters due to their genes. Inbreeding: Inbreeding can also impact litter size. If two closely related dogs are bred, they are more likely to have smaller litters. This is because inbreeding can lead to genetic defects that can impact fertility. Additionally, inbred dogs are more likely to have health problems that can make it difficult for them to produce large litters. How The Insemination Took Place: Another factor that can impact litter size is how the insemination took place. If artificial insemination was used, the number of puppies that are born may be smaller than if the dogs were allowed to mate naturally. This is because artificial insemination can cause damage to the eggs or sperm, which can reduce fertility. Additionally, if only one dog was used for artificial insemination, the litter size may be smaller than if two dogs were used. The age of the Goldendoodle can also impact litter size. This is because their bodies are not yet fully developed and they may not be able to produce as many eggs. Additionally, younger dogs are more likely to experience complications during pregnancy and delivery, which can lead to smaller litters. The average age for a Goldendoodle to have its first litter is between 24 months and three years old. However, some Goldendoodles may have their first litter as early as 18 months old, while others may not have their first litter until they are three years old. The average age for a Goldendoodle to have its last litter is between six and eight years old. However, some Goldendoodles may continue to have litters until they are ten years old or older. Beyond this, you can put your Goldendoodle at serious risk of health complications by continuing to breed them. At this age, the puppy will begin to eat solid food and will no longer need to drink milk. Weaning a puppy too early can cause health problems, so it is important to wait until the puppy is at least six weeks old before you begin weaning them. Conclusion: We would like to conclude by saying that the number of puppies a Goldendoodle can have depends on many factors. The health of the mother, the age of the puppy, and the weight of the mother all play a role in how many puppies a Goldendoodle can have. Always consult with your veterinarian to determine if your Goldendoodle is healthy enough to have another litter of puppies. By Jennifer Nelson When you are looking to get a Goldendoodle, it is likely that you will have a lot of questions about the dog and how they will do within your family. And if you decide to take it to the next level and breed the Goldendoodle yourself, you need to learn as much about this type of dog as possible to be prepared. One of the first questions that you can have in either of these situations is what is the average litter size of a Goldendoodle. What is the Average Litter Size of a Goldendoodle? Goldendoodles usually have between puppies in a litter. Poodles average 6 puppies per litter and Golden Retrievers average 8 per litter, so Standard Goldendoodles usually have bigger litters while minis and smaller have progressively smaller litters. Keep in mind that larger dogs will often have a larger litter because they have the right body size in order to carry more of the puppies at the time. This is why small dogs like the Pomeranian are just going to have an average of 1 to 3 puppies while a big Bullmastiff will be able to have up to 13 puppies. For the Goldendoodle and other crossbreeds , we are going to need to look more at the averages for the parents rather than for the dog. And the exact amount can vary depending on if you are working with a standard Goldendoodle or a mini Goldendoodle. When we take a look at the Golden Retriever, the average litter size for this dog is 8 puppies. Since this is the average, you will find that each litter is going to be a little bit different when it comes to the Golden Retriever. Some will give birth to as few as four puppies while others may give birth to up to 12 puppies in one litter. Then we can take a look at the Poodle parent as well. The Poodle will have different types of litter sizes based on the type of Poodle that you work with. The Standard Poodle is going to have an average of six puppies. Then the miniature Poodle will have five and the toy Poodle will have between one to three puppies for each litter. Mini Goldendoodles are going to be somewhere in between all of this and the exact amount will depend on the size of the Goldendoodle that you are trying to breed. For example, if you are working with the mini Goldendoodle, they will be able to produce between three to eight puppies in each litter, giving us an average of five puppies. Then there are standard Goldendoodles, which are going to be able to have more puppies per litter, many averaging between 6 to 8 in each litter. Keep in mind that this is not an exact science and there are a number of factors that can happen to determine how many puppies will be born in a litter. For example, the first litter for a female is often going to be smaller in size compared to the following litters. While the older females are often going to produce larger litters, the opposite is going to be said with the father. An older dog might be affected by sperm mobility issues so the dogs will be smaller in the process too. Whether you are just starting out with the Goldendoodle and using the Poodle and Golden Retriever to get this done, or you would like to breed your Goldendoodle, you do not want to start the puppies on their first litter too early. To start, the female dog in the grouping is going to be ready to have babies when she first goes into heat. This will happen sometime between 6 to 12 months of age. Most experts agree that you should not breed them right away. The dog is not prepared to be a parent yet and this can be hard on their body. It is best to do it after the second or third fertile cycle at the earliest before you allow the dog time to mate. This will allow their body to become fully grown and makes it more likely that the dog will be able to handle the pregnancy. For the Golden Retriever parent, it is best that they wait until they reach the age of two before they are used for breeding. This will usually happen around the third heat cycle. This is a pretty common rule for all types of Poodles as well. If you wait until the female is five years old or older, they will generally have smaller litters than doing it before this time. Breeding between the ages of 2 and 5 is often best. While it is technically possible for the female to have puppies each time they go into heat, this is not a good idea. You should not force the dogs to go through one pregnancy after another because this can have some negative health effects for the dog. At most, you can mate the female twice in a row and then give them a few cycles to recover and regain their strength and to prevent issues along the way. If you are ever uncertain about whether it is a good idea to start breeding the dog, it may be a good idea to discuss this with the vet ahead of time to keep your dog healthy. The first step to helping breed your Goldendoodle is making sure that you do not start this process too early for your dog. Once you have decided when to start, it is time to figure out when you should stop breeding the dog. Technically, the female dog in the couple is able to breed and have puppies throughout their whole life. However, this is not something that is recommended. While each dog is going to be a little different, when it comes to the Poodle and the Golden Retriever, it is best to not mate the dog much past the age of 8 at most. The health of your dog should be an important factor to consider if you are worried about when to stop breeding. However, most dog clubs try to provide an incentive to stop you from breeding a dog that is too old. For example, most of the common dog clubs that you can choose from will not register a dog if their mother is older than 8 when they are born. This is done to help discourage continuous breeding up until the time the mother dies. In most dogs, once they reach the age of seven to eight, the pregnancy is going to have more complications. This is going to put the life of the mother in danger and is not that healthy for the dog or their puppies at all. Being careful with breeding when the dog starts to get older is not a good option. If you start to notice that the pregnancy is not going well for your dog or they seem to have a number of other health issues that may affect how well they are able to have puppies, then it is time to stop. The health of the mother always needs to be a top priority to make sure that they do not get sick. Taking care of the mother is a top way to keep the puppies in that litter a little safer as well. A common question about standard Goldendoodle ownership is how many puppies can Goldendoodles have? A female Goldendoodle can have between 3 to 8 puppies per litter and as many as two litters in one year. As long as their mental and physical health is good, they can usually do this. This means that all puppies are born simultaneously or on the same bed. A litter is a group of puppies born at once. Is Dog size and breed effective? Because the Goldendoodle is a part Golden Retriever and a Poodle, there are a variety of variations when looking at the kind of Poodle. In addition to the differences in size, their temperament and care are also different. While a Miniature Poodle is a small dog, a Standard Poodle can be warm and welcoming. What factors influence the litter size for Goldendoodles? Genetics is the first. Some Goldendoodles reproduce at high rates, while others have very low rates. This is due to their genetic structure. A Golden Retriever has an average litter of eight puppies. For Poodles, however, it is more complicated. Their size is the most important thing. One to three puppies can be born to a toy Poodle. The bigger the dog, the larger its litter size will be. If your Goldendoodle is tiny, you should expect fewer puppies per litter. For a standard Goldendoodle, the average of 5 puppies per litter is reasonable. Also, the first litter of a female canine is usually the smallest. It will go up for the next litter. A female Goldendoodle can have two litters per year. Their fertility can last up to 8 years. It is most recommended for a female dog to mate before two years old. Five months is the average time for a litter of puppies to be born. What is the best time to start breeding? It is best to wait for the second cycle of fertility to pass, then start breeding. A female should have her first litter within the first two years of her life. This will increase her fertility and litter size. You may like: are huskies dangerous Breeding tips. Knowing the average size of a Goldendoodle litter will help you make informed decisions about breeding programs that will work for your dogs. What problems Impact the size of litter? Numerous elements affect the success of birth and the number of babies. There are a few factors to avoid to have the ideal scenario. Stressful environment: Dogs can feel stress. This could impact the fertility of your dog. As a dog owner, this is unacceptable and is not the behavior of a respected breeder. Genetics: Genetics of breeds can affect the size of litters. As we all know, genetics can often skip a Goldendoodle generation or not appear again. Inbreeding: It is dangerous because of the medical issues it can cause in dogs that are a product of the situation. Many breeders cut corners and run out of unrelated dogs searching for an F1b Goldendoodle or multigene Goldendoodle. This is unacceptable. A reputable breeder cuts NO corners. Goldendoodles fall into this category due to their natural tendencies toward hyperactivity and intelligence. They are perfect family pets as they are highly affectionate, energetic, hypoallergenic, and loyal. While they are young bred, they are gaining increasing popularity. This makes them suitable dogs for breeding. This is a subject close to my heart as a breeder of Doodles and a former breeder of Labrador Retrievers. The gestation period is counted from the first day of ovulation rather than the first day of mating as these two dates can differ somewhat. While it used to be believed that a bitch would only mate on the days she was ovulating we now know, thanks to the help of the tools available to us today, that this is not always the case. This means that they ovulate earlier during their heat period than some other breeds and also give birth slightly earlier. Most breeds usually ovulate and are ready to be mated from approximately the fourteenth day of being in heat the first day of the heat period is counted as the first day you see bleeding but I have found with my Goldendoodle girls that they ovulate as early as day .With that in mind, in the early days of my breeding career, before progesterone testing was readily available, if I had used the fourteen-day rule of thumb I may actually have missed my girls ovulating. This means that mating slightly too late does not necessarily mean she will not become pregnant but that she may have a smaller than optimum sized litter. For this reason, we do not allow our bitches to be mated only once — it is important to repeat the mating again 48 hours later meaning a minimum of two matings. If you are taking your girl out to stud, rather than using your own in-house stud, it is particularly important to know when she is ovulating to avoid a wasted journey or wasted mating. Some bitches will stand to be mated slightly before and after ovulating, so allowing the dog to mate her is not indicative of ovulation on its own. I have found this to be especially true of my Goldendoodle girls who always seem keen to mate early in their heat periods. In addition to ovulating early in their cycle, I have also found that my girls give birth earlier than other breeds, generally giving birth on day 61 of their pregnancy rather than day 63 or 64 when my bitches of other breeds delivered their litters. I have found this to be true not only of my own Goldendoodle bitches but also of the bitches that have been brought in to be mated by my stud dogs. There are several ways we can confirm pregnancy in our Goldendoodle bitch starting from day 21 after ovulation. Many breeders also report a clear mucous discharge from the vulva at around this time. From day 28 you can have an ultrasound examination to confirm pregnancy however this is not a reliable way to ascertain litter size and bitches can also reabsorb fetuses even after this point. From roughly the fifth week after mating, however, you should be able to tell just by looking that your girl is indeed pregnant. I always notice that her rib cage looks wider when viewed from above at this stage. You will often find that her appetite increases around this time too. During the last two weeks of gestation, your vet can carry out an x-ray to check the number of pups that your bitch is expecting. This is more accurate at this point as calcification will have occurred and a good radiographer and often an experienced breeder can count the number of skulls and spines seen. Before even considering breeding from your Goldendoodle bitch there are a number of checks that should be carried out. No vet is needed for genetic testing as this is done via cheek swabs which are sent away to a laboratory; however, this takes several weeks. Assuming all these checks are OK before actually mating you must ensure that your girl is up to date with vaccinations, worming, and flea treatment and have her checked over by a vet to confirm that she is in perfect health and fit for breeding. Once she is actually pregnant apart from the confirmation of pregnancy, she should need no further pre-natal checks. Average Litter Size of a Goldendoodle Like most large breeds, Goldendoodles do tend to have large litters. The average litter size is 8 to 11 puppies. In my own personal experience, this has proved to be true with my smallest litter being ten pups and my largest thirteen. Goldendoodles are generally great mums and my girls have raised their litters beautifully and I have not had to assist with feeding, even with my largest litter. Can There Be Any Outside Impacts on Gestation Period Generally, if a bitch is having a smaller litter of four or fewer pups, she is more likely to give birth later than expected compared with a bitch having a larger litter. However, usually not by more than a day or two. Pups born seven days or more before their due date have a very low chance of survival, but this is thankfully a rare occurrence. If a bitch experiences trauma or contracts an infection during her pregnancy this can also cause early onset of labor or even abortion, so it is important to protect the pregnancy by ensuring the bitch is in optimum health and kept in suitably clean conditions. It is wise to avoid any unnecessary veterinary drugs or exposure to chemicals during her pregnancy. Your bitch will need to be wormed during pregnancy but make sure to use products specifically for use during pregnancy to avoid damage to the unborn pups. What is the Average Whelping Time? However, I have found that for a normal-sized litter 8 to 11 pups it usually takes on average around 8 — 10 hours for all pups to be born. Usually, once pushing starts the first few pups are born in relatively quick succession, but this slows down somewhat towards the end of delivery. This is caused by several things. There is no need to panic so long as the bitch is not distressed or actively pushing for over an hour without delivering a pup. The normal temperature is to .Once you observe this temperature drop it is vital to stay by her side. As labor progresses the bitch will pant and become restless often becoming stressed if you leave her even to pop to the toilet. She will start to dig, especially out in the yard so make sure you accompany her on toilet breaks. She may also have diarrhea or vomit. This is the time to encourage her to move to her whelping box. Tips on Caring for Your Goldendoodle During the Gestation Period During the gestation period, it is important that your Goldendoodle is kept in the very best of health. Make sure she has plenty of high-quality food, puppy food, or a complete raw diet are best and let her eat as much as she likes. Exercise is also important as a fit bitch will have an easier delivery. My own girls usually continue their daily walks right up until the day before delivery. Start worming the bitch on day 40 of her pregnancy with a pregnancy-safe product at the correct dose for her weight and continue this until two days post whelp.
Are Morkie Poos aggressive? Generally speaking, Morkie Poos are very loving and affectionate pups and they usually bond extremely well with their humans. On the other hand, Morkie Poos may exhibit a stubborn streak from time to time. But all in all, Morkie Poos are wonderful little companions with so much to give. However, due to their somewhat clingy nature, Morkie Poos are prone to separation anxiety. For this reason, leaving them alone for the majority of the day is a big no-no. Do Morkie Poos have health problems? The great thing about hybrid breeds like the Morkiepoo is that these pups tend to be healthier than their purebred parents. The term used for this is hybrid vigor, which suggests that crossbreeds have superior health thanks to their more diverse genetic pool. In addition to that, Morkiepoos usually live long and healthy lives. Of course, you should also take your pup to regular vet checkups. Although Morkipoos are generally healthy dogs, they are still susceptible to certain genetic conditions that they may inherit from one or more of their parental breeds. The most common health issues in Morkie Poos include joint problems like patellar luxation and elbow dysplasia, eye diseases like progressive retinal atrophy PRA , cataracts, and glaucoma, tracheal collapse, hypoglycemia, heart diseases, and thyroid issues. Note that these physical traits may still vary because they are a crossbreed. Here are some videos for you to have a better visual of Morkiepoo puppies. Maltese, Yorkshire Terriers, and Poodles are all dog breeds of a small variety. This is why the cross between these three is also relatively small. Fully grown Morkie Poos only weigh 4 to 12 pounds on average. However, it is necessary to add that their size also depends on their gender. Usually, a male Morkie Poo weighs 6 to 12 pounds, while a female pup is around 4 to 8 pounds. There is also a slight difference between the male and the female Morkie Poo in terms of height. An adult female has a height range of 6 to 8 inches, while an adult male is normally 7 to 10 inches tall. Meanwhile, if they have gotten the hair characteristic of their Poodle parent, their coat is more frizzy but equally adorable. This gives them a more vulnerable yet pristine appearance. Black Image credit: bentleys. Brown Image credit: mamba. There are other shades of this color, but the pup in the picture below is medium brown. Tan Image credit: kali. Its coloring makes it look fluffier and gentle. The two-colored coat gives it a soft but edgy-looking appearance. If you are looking for a pet who is both visually pleasing and stress relieving, this hybrid may be the right one for you. They will keep following you and always ask for your cuddles. They are territorial, so it is best to socialize them with other animals while they are still young. They are very playful and energetic. They will enjoy going for a walk or a jog. They are brave and self-confident. They are smart, thanks to their Poodle parents. You can teach them a few tricks and simple commands. They have natural chase instincts like their Yorkie parents, but they are not that aggressive. A cousin of mine has a 2-year-old Morkie Poo, and he is very affectionate, even with strangers. It has a habit of jumping on your lap and positioning its head on your palm so you can give it a good head scratch. Either that or it will lie flat on its back, asking for a belly rub. However, it has always been an issue when my cousin leaves for work as it becomes very vocal, and when he gets home, a lot of his stuff is on the floor, like tissue paper, shoes, slippers, and rugs. Crate training has helped him manage this behavior in his Morkie Poo. The best way for this to be treated is through a combination of medication and surgery. Mixed breeds, such as the Morkie Poo, can also have low blood sugar which can affect their energy level. One simple way of doing this is by trimming their hair regularly and brushing them to remove tangles and knots. You should also trim their nails, clean their eyes and ears, and bathe them every 15 to 30 days. Training and Exercise Since Morkie Poos are active pups, you should always walk them or give them time to play. You do not need to engage them in strenuous activities. Simple dog exercises will do as long as they consistently do it daily. However, some of them are stubborn, so you have to be persistent with your commands. This will make them realize that you are the boss and they have to obey you. This said, always ensure that you are only dealing with reputable breeders and avoid puppy mills at all costs. Although a mixed-breed dog can inherit any combination of traits from their parents, Morkie-Poos tend to be small, energetic, and playful dogs that love nothing more than being with their favorite humans. A Morkie-Poo craves human companionship and thrives on attention, especially from their favorite human. They are affectionate little dogs that love to cuddle and will tend to follow you from room to room to stay close. In this way, they can be clingy, but are a great fit for someone who wants a constant companion. Although they will love being the only object of your affection and attention, they do tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets as long as they are socialized properly. If not socialized properly, they can become territorial and overly protective of their favorite human. As a tiny dog, they can be easily injured by young children who are still mastering motor control and coordination. Because of this, they are generally a better fit for single owners or families with older children who know how to properly interact with a dog. Morkie-Poos can be wary, suspicious, and shy when it comes to strangers. But, as long as they have been properly socialized, they tend to warm up quickly and are happy to receive the extra attention. They can be prone to barking, especially if you train them into it or do not train them to stop barking. Keeping this in mind and starting training early can keep barking from becoming a nuisance behavior. The Morkie-Poo is a highly adaptable dog breed. They can thrive in almost any living situation as long as they get the attention, affection, mental stimulation, and exercise they need to be happy and healthy. Their small size and short muzzle make them particularly sensitive to heat and also make them sensitive to cold. Making sure you have the right mix of winter dog products on hand can help your Morkie-Poo stay warm on walks when temperatures drop. Because they thrive on attention and affection, Morkie-Poos do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. They are prone to developing separation anxiety , so you will want to work with them when they are young to build confidence with some alone time to avoid it. They also tend to have a high prey drive, so you may only want to let them off-leash in securely fenced areas. Otherwise, they may ignore your recall commands in favor of chasing after something interesting. As with any dog breed, the Morkie-Poo can be prone to developing health issues. Some conditions to be aware of include glaucoma , hypoglycemia, cataracts, and tracheal collapse. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies, so make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. As a small dog breed, the Morkie-Poo is more prone to developing dental diseases, like gum disease , tooth decay, and tooth loss, later in life. With good dental care at home and regular visits to the vet, you can help keep their teeth and gums healthy. Although these dogs are intelligent and pick up on things quickly, they can also be stubborn despite wanting to please their owners. They will also sometimes try to use their cute face to push boundaries and get away with things. They can be a good fit for first-time dog owners as long as training is consistent and focused on praise and positive reward. Puppy training classes are always an option and can be a big help. A Morkie-Poo will have a low-shedding coat that can come in a variety of colors and can range from silky to curly depending on what coat texture they inherit from their parents. Either way, you will need to brush them daily to remove tangles and prevent mats from forming. You will also need to take them to the groomer every weeks to keep their coat healthy and looking great. Checking ears weekly to make sure they are dry, clean, and free of debris or pests is a good idea. In doing so, you can identify issues early and either carefully clean their ears or get to the vet. This can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste daily is ideal. Although they will have bouts of high energy and will be energetic while playing, they are a small dog that will tire themselves out quickly. Because of this, a Morkie-Poo tends to sit in a low to moderate activity range. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this small pup. But, because they love spending time with you, they will likely be up for more activity if you are. A fully-grown Morkie-Poo usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. A Morkie-Poo generally lives for years on average. The Morkie-Poo is also sometimes called a Morkie Doodle. They are considered a tri-breed as they are a cross between a designer breed and a purebred dog. Featured Morkie-Poo Article.

While I love to play with my foster siblings, I really just want calm space to hang out with my humans and other fur friends. I wake and jump into bed to give my foster parents good morning snuggles! I enjoy a light morning snack and spend the rest of the day napping and hanging out with the humans while they work. After work, all bets are off, and I make sure to get all the puppy zoomies out. My leash training is going well, but I often try to chase the leaves and get distracted by unfamiliar sights and smells. I love to go outside to play, chew on a stick or take a walk. I also enjoy down time with humans to cuddle and get lots of belly rubs. I start my day at am, go potty, then breakfast. After I like going outside to chase squirrels and play. I then have dinner around pm and in my crate by 10pm for bed. I love learning tricks and am very food motivated! I also like to try and outsmart my foster parents when they hide my treats or sticks, I bring inside. I am very curious and love to explore, play, eat, and cuddle. Now that I am older, I can make it through the night without any potty accidents but I need to go outside as soon as I am up, usually around 7am. I eat breakfast then it's right back outside for my next potty break! I like to have a chew bone and play for a while, then naps. I like to sit on the couch next to my foster mom, or lay on my back sprawled out on the floor. I love going for walks and am learning to not pull. I bark a little at other dogs but I am very dog and people friendly. Nights are pretty low key, I may play a little before bed time, where I prefer to sleep next to my foster parent's bed. I love to cuddle if you'll allow me up too! Since I am still a puppy, I need reinforcements with potty training, proper leash walking, and learning what and what not to chew on. I am just a super sweet girl and can't wait to share my love with you! Questions about Poodle puppies for sale in Dallas TX? We have answers. Look for a food that has some form of meat as the first ingredient — such as lamb, chicken, or turkey. Avoid foods that have grain as the first ingredient. Also look for multiple meat proteins in the first seven ingredients. Protein from multiple sources is generally viewed as being beneficial such as lamb, chicken and fish , unless your dog is allergic to certain proteins. Dog food companies sometimes list several types of grains in the first seven ingredients. Beware of this — your dog needs animal protein in his diet! Added vitamins and minerals are beneficial only when applied after the baking process, because heat destroys vitamins. The best foods are made up of ingredients that would be suitable for human consumption. Most dog foods contain meat products that are not fit for human consumption. They can include meat from diseased livestock, condemned material from slaughterhouses such as tumors cut away from meat , and as horrible as it sounds, some pet foods include euthanized pets sold to rendering plants and even road kill. Is it any wonder why so many dogs die from cancer when they are being fed meat from these sources? Grains — many dog foods will contain some grains, for example, brown rice, barley, corn, wheat, etc. We have found that some goldens in our rescue program generally do poorly on a food that contains corn or soy. Many goldens are allergic to corn or wheat. So if your golden starts getting a lot of hot spots or skin problems — check his food. There is a big difference in quality of grain products. Look for whole rice or brown rice in the ingredients; white rice and ground brewers rice are much lower in nutrients than whole or brown rice. Often pet food companies take the sweepings off the mill floor and put it in pet food. Look for whole grains instead such as oatmeal, brown rice, barley, or whole oats. Grain Free foods. Grain Free foods have become increasingly available as food companies try to offer foods that are easier to digest with lower levels of complex carbohydrates and grains. One misconception is that grain free dog food is also low-carb, however, vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, green peas and tapioca often replace the grains in grain-free dog foods, especially in kibble foods, making them as high or higher in carbohydrates than grain-based dog foods. Studies have shown peas, beans, pea starch, legumes, potatoes and sweet potatoes that have replaced the grains in dog foods block the function of taurine. Taurine, a sulfuric acid, is essential for healthy cardiovascular function in Golden Retrievers. If left untreated, taurine deficiency in Golden Retrievers can cause dilated cardiomyopathy DCM , congestive heart failure and possibly death. Read all the ingredients in the food which should include taurine and check with your veterinarian before selecting or feeding any grain free food to your dog. Detailed information on dog food ingredients and taurine can be found on this web page under Taurine and Grain Free information and at: Diet Associated Heart Disease Treats — beware of many dog treats out there. They are filled with sugars, preservatives and artificial colors. Try buying biscuits at your local dog bakery or making some yourself. The dog food companies listed below have high quality treats available for your dog. Is your dog overweight? Beware of some diet dog foods, they can be loaded with fillers that provide no added nutrition. At least green beans are healthy. You can also use canned pumpkin. Typically goldens love it! DO NOT free feed your golden; instead feed a measured amount of food twice a day. Most adult goldens will eat 1 cup of premium dog food twice a day. Is your dog too fat? You should be able to feel its ribs and your dog should have a waist. We have found that we have a different view of what constitutes a fat dog than many veterinarians. They will typically allow dogs to carry more weight than is optimal. This perhaps is because they do not want to insult their clients and risk losing business. Letting your golden get too fat is like chopping years off of its life. We also see lots of hip problems with goldens, and keeping weight in check will give your dog better mobility. Fat goldens are an epidemic from our experience. We routinely get goldens into our rescue program that have to lose 30 — 40 pounds!!! Therefore we have a lot of experience at taking the weight off! It is very discouraging and upsetting when an adoptive home will let some weight creep back on. You may think you are loving your dog by giving it too much to eat, but if you really love it you will keep it at a normal weight. Remember — Ribs and Waists! Can you feel and see them on your dog? If not, break open the cans of green beans! The bottom line is read the ingredients, consult your veterinarian and research reliable resources. Making sure your dog has the best nutritional food will help to insure he has a long and healthy life. Here, from Whole Dog Journal, are some additional links for selecting best dry dog food and the best canned dog reviews. Goldens Rescued Since .Read the full disclosure here. Being a large and energetic dog, your golden retriever has a ravenous appetite and can eat a lot. However, overfeeding is never good and could be avoided with the help of a golden retriever feeding chart. Knowing how much to feed your golden retriever is always tricky but essential for their well-being and health. Goldens are prone to obesity and joint problems, which can only be exacerbated with an inadequate feeding plan. So, stay with me to find the right feeding plan and meal schedule for your goldie. Most first-time owners think their puppies should be chubby. In truth, golden retriever puppies are supposed to look lanky and act like they are always hungry when fed the correct amount of food. To encourage proper growth and development without making your pup obese, you will have to know how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. For example, cheaper foods use fillers and have a smaller amount of calories, thus you will have to feed more than you would when using premium large breed puppy foods. They are growing quickly, so while they eat smaller quantities of food than adult dogs, they need to extract far more nutrients like protein, minerals, and vitamins, to sustain their growth and development. Different Dogs, Different Diets Nutritional needs vary from breed to breed. One only needs to look at golden retrievers to know they require a different diet than a Chihuahua! For example, joint and bone problems are much more common in big dogs than in little ones, but choosing the right puppy food can reduce the risk. Large-breed puppy food has reduced amounts of calcium and phosphorus, which helps control the rate of skeletal growth. Also, you may find puppy foods that contain glucosamine and chondroitin to support joint health and mobility. By consuming too much food, your puppy will have elevated levels of the very nutrients that should be limited. Additionally, overweight puppies may develop other health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. Good eating habits developed during puppyhood will lead to a healthy mature dog in the years to come. Nutrition For The Outside One of the most visible components of your dog is its fur. Nutrition plays a vital role in this area. A large percentage of the protein your puppy takes in goes towards maintaining its coat. Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential for healthy skin and fur. Which Food Do I Choose? There will always be those who buy the cheapest brand on the market. Some will opt for the most expensive, while others will simply go with a brand name they recognize. The key is to find the right food for your particular puppy. One thing you cannot afford to ignore is the nutritional content. Because they are still growing, puppies need more protein than adults. Proteins foster muscle growth and development in puppies and lean muscle maintenance in adults, so the more of it there is in a diet, the better it is for your growing retriever. Fats, too, are important for golden puppies because they provide the energy required for everyday activities. You should be careful, however, not to feed your golden excess calories because this will result in excess weight or obesity. Eventually, your dog will end up battling joint problems. For instance, less expensive dog foods typically have lower-quality ingredients. The contents are often inexpensive, low-grade animal protein sources, like by-products and fillers. Fillers are frequently things like cornmeal, rice flour, or seed hulls. In general, thoroughly review the nutritional content of your chosen diet. Are the ingredients wholesome and natural? Does the diet have controlled calcium and phosphorous levels? Is the calorie and fat content limited to manage growth? Does the label state that the diet is complete and balanced? This can lead to obesity and will certainly cause increased defecation. The latter of these two issues will make house training more difficult than it already is. By contrast, costlier dog foods usually have higher-quality ingredients. The scales will be tipped heavily in favor of high-grade animal protein sources and fillers will be few and far between. Price is not, however, a guarantee of quality. The best dog foods for a golden retriever puppy are made with high-quality natural ingredients and have high levels of protein. Make sure the food is complete and balanced for daily feeding and formulated to meet the nutritional needs of large breed puppies. At this point, golden retriever puppies have likely already been switched to dry puppy food and you should continue feeding your pup the same type of food the breeder used. From the day you bring them home until they are six months old, you should feed your golden retriever puppy three times a day. Ideally, your pup should have breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. A grain-free diet is the default meal for golden retrievers that are sensitive to grains, but if your dog is healthy, feeding her such a meal boils down to choice. A lot has been said about grain-free diets. Reports and studies have been carried out in recent years trying to establish any connection between it and Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy DCM. That all starts with choosing the best puppy food for golden retrievers. Avoid low-cost foods that are more filler than substance, and look for better foods that are packed with nutrients to help your puppy grow. In particular, consider trying a large breed formula to meet the specific needs of your golden retriever puppy. Good nutrition is an essential part of any health regimen, and providing high-quality puppy food will lay the foundation for a long, and enjoyable life. You May Also Like. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. We all want our golden retriever puppies to be healthy and happy. We envision them running through a verdant field chasing a ball. Full of energy with the beautiful, lustrous golden coat. But, just like us, eating the proper food in the proper amounts will help your golden properly grow and thrive. After all, what we eat impacts how healthy we are. How much you should feed your golden retriever puppy will vary depending on the quality of food you feed, his age, his weight, his general health, and his activity level. Your golden will be growing for up to two years. And the amount of food during that time will have to be adjusted depending on his needs. Because most people feed kibble to their pup, this article will focus on that. Kibble is convenient and cost effective. Instead, they should be lanky and full of energy. They should love to eat their food with gusto. Instead, you should be able to feel his ribs when you pet him there. There should just be a thin coating of fat under his skin. And he should have a defined waistline. Of course you should check with your veterinarian to make such adjustments. And remember a young puppy should get only so much exercise a day. Their joints and bones are developing and can be damaged if the exercise is too extreme. Assuming you have an eight-week-old puppy, he should receive three to four meals a day. From eight weeks old until about five or six months old, three meals per day are advisable. Of course, feed at the same intervals every day and split the total amount per day in half to be given at each feeding. After about six months of age through adulthood, two feedings per day are the norm. Always check with your vet regarding how much and how often to feed. These are just guidelines. Feed him at the same distraction-free location so that he focuses on eating. As much as goldens love to eat, a young golden puppy is also very easily distracted. This can lead to possible health problems, including joint and bone problems. Goldens can easily become overweight. Free feeding can also lead to a picky eater. Some puppies figure out that if their buffets are always there, and they can just go graze at will. Most foods you purchase will have guidelines on their bag or box. When you first get your puppy, feed him the same food that the breeder or rescue fed him for a few weeks. Then, if you want to change his food, do so over at least 10 days. Add more of the new food and subtract more of the old food each day. After about five days, you should be giving him approximately 50 percent of the new food and 50 percent of the old food. Switching food over such a period of time will help prevent stomach upsets and diarrhea. Overfeeding will result not only in him becoming overweight but it will also make him grow too fast. Periodically—even weekly— test whether you can still feel his ribs without them protruding. You can then increase the amount he eats. You should also feed his last meal of the day at least 90 minutes before his bed time so that he can digest his food and potty before bed. A well-balanced, high-quality food should provide all the nutrients he requires. Golden puppies require a formula made for large-breed dogs. Puppy formulas for large-breed dogs regulate their growth. Eating too quickly can lead to digestive upsets and even bloat, which can be deadly. I rescued my golden retriever Riley when he was about six months old. To say that he ate as if it were his last meal would be an understatement. He had a voracious appetite. I bought one of the maze bowls to slow him down. The kibble is placed between each section of the bowl, and he had to forage for his food. It worked! He ate at a more normal pace. Of course, dogs should be given free access to fresh water. Other Feeding Options Although I concentrated in this article on feeding kibble to your new puppy, there are other options. There are some drawbacks to them because they may not be nutritionally complete, may be cost prohibitive, or may be too time-consuming to make. Wet Food Canned food alone or mixed with kibble is an option. But wet food alone is very expensive. He may become a picky eater. Feeding raw is controversial. Dehydrated raw foods reduce some of the risks. The ratio of calcium to phosphorous is crucial to puppy development. Homemade Diet Cooking for your best friend can be very appealing. And many people do. You know what ingredients and their quality are. But it has its drawbacks. Of course, the amount you feed is important for his growth rate and general health and well-being. But there is no one-size-fits-all in determining how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. Any amounts you see are just guidelines. Adjust them as necessary regarding your own special puppy. If you are bringing a Goldie into your family, you might also be aware of their reputation as food lovers. Your Goldie might want to eat anything and everything you put in their bowl — and maybe even anything left on an unattended plate. In this Golden Retriever feeding guide, Hypro Premium will take you through everything you need to know when it comes to food options for your pup. The best food for most young puppies is milk. If you are weaning a puppy, you can start to mix in a little dry kibble with their puppy milk to create a paste. You can feed this mix to your puppy up to four times a day, slowly reducing the amount of milk you mix in. Over time, your Goldie puppy will get more comfortable with solid foods, until you no longer need to include any milk in their diet. While chubby little puppies are cute, your Goldie should not build up too much excess fat once you start feeding them solids. Goldies go from a small 4kg puppy at 7 weeks old to an almost 30 kg adult dog in the space of only 10 months. At six months old your puppy will still be growing, but more slowly as they reach most of their body development milestones. This is why appropriate feeding in the first year of their life is vital to the overall health of your Goldie for years to come. Over time this can increase to up to 4 cups a day at 10 months old, though females should usually only need 3 cups a day. The amount you feed your puppy is often dependent on their size and sex. While they may have some growing left to do, it depends on your dog. Some Goldies will continue to experience growth spurts before their second birthday, while others will stay the same size. Large breeds can be at risk of growing too fast, which can make them more vulnerable to skeletal and weight problems when they get older. Golden retrievers are especially prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which can be avoided through diet control. You should feed your Goldie between 3 — 4 cups of food per day over two meals. Adult dogs and puppies have different nutritional needs. This is important to take into consideration as you are establishing a feeding schedule for a Golden Retriever puppy. Puppies require more calories to support their rapid growth than adult dogs, but they also have much smaller stomachs, which means they get fuller faster. Because of this, puppies can easily overeat, especially Golden Retrievers. You can help your puppy avoid overeating by allowing them a short amount of time to eat, and then removing their bowl. All puppies grow a lot during their first year, but large breed puppies are more likely to suffer from negative health consequences as a result. In order to provide your Golden Retriever puppy with the most appropriate food to support their rapid growth, consider choosing a large breed puppy food. Goldie puppies need lots of protein, fibre, and fatty acids to support the development of their bodies and provide them with energy. These foods also take into account the difference in nutrient digestion between small and large breeds. Too much of these nutrients can cause your large breed puppy to develop skeletal abnormalities. So how much do you feed a Golden Retriever? Your adult Goldie could need anywhere between and 1, calories per day. The amount of food you feed your dog will be determined by a few important factors. The first thing to consider is the sex of your dog. On average, your male Golden Retriever will need slightly more food than a female dog. Senior dogs will usually be less active and so will need less food. Goldies in particular can have a lot of variation in the amount of food they need on a daily basis. No matter how much you feed your dog, it is ideal that you feed your adult Golden Retriever two meals a day at evenly spaced time intervals. Feeding your dog twice, once in the morning and again in the evening, can be useful for establishing a routine and avoiding overfeeding. This routine can also include exercise, and is useful for encouraging healthy behaviour around food and toilet training. Special Considerations Your Golden Retriever could be predisposed to several health conditions that are important to consider when you make decisions about their diet. Firstly, Golden Retrievers are known for their beautiful coats, but their skin can often become infected. Goldies love swimming, but this can cause problems if water irritates their skin. They can also be susceptible to atopic dermatitis, which causes extreme itchiness, resulting in licking and biting behaviours in dogs that can cause even more damage. For dogs prone to skin and coat issues, a fish-based diet can help alleviate symptoms. Fish contains plenty of fatty acids, which support coat and skin health, and rarely triggers any allergic reaction in dogs. Goldies often benefit from healthy grains in their diet, especially as avoiding them can actually leave your dog more vulnerable to nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy, or nutritional DCM. This heart disease is common in Golden Retrievers, and can be triggered by consuming too much grain-free pet food that contains legumes like lentils and peas. You should consider feeding your Golden Retriever foods that are full of grains and proteins like chicken or fish. These are the benefits and drawbacks of the three most popular options — wet food, a raw food diet, and dry food. Wet food can be a great option for dogs that need plenty of protein and fat, like working dogs or dogs with certain health conditions. It also hydrates your dog while they eat, which can be useful for dogs suffering from any illness. For dogs with highly restrictive diets, raw food prepared by you can be a great way to avoid allergens. You can have complete control over a raw diet, which does require a lot more work on your part, but can have great results. For instance, a Golden Retriever with heart issues should eat a low salt diet, which can be easier to achieve if you are preparing their meals from scratch. However, low quality kibbles tend to be made up of a lot of low quality fillers, which can be hard for your pup to digest. Whatever option you choose for your Goldie, make sure it is suitable for large breeds and contains high quality ingredients. This will help prevent degenerative health disorders in the long run. Your Golden Retriever will probably love food, and will probably try to eat anything you put in front of them, which means you need to help them avoid the negative consequences of overeating. Golden retrievers, like other large and active breeds, need plenty of exercise. Not only is this vital to their physical health, but it also ensures they grow up well socialised and mentally stimulated. As your Goldie grows from a puppy to an adult dog, the amount of meals they need a day will reduce as their digestive systems become more developed. Your dog will need two meals a day, once in the evening and once in the morning, from the age of 6 months.
german shepherd husky mix puppy training - This price range might still increase, especially if you opt for a puppy from a champion bloodline or one with rare coat color. Compared to both cousin dog breeds, purebred English Bulldogs cost more due to the extra care needed during birth. A pregnant British Bulldog must be closely monitored once it reaches its final stages of pregnancy. Female Bulldog: Which Is Better? Besides papers and registry documents, bloodline, age, and coat color are also some factors that could affect the average price of your Bulldog. Here is a detailed list of the factors that affect the price range of an English Bulldog: Age: English Bulldog puppies cost more than seniors or adult dogs because they are healthier and more active. Senior dogs often have tons of health issues that need immediate medical attention, while puppies are a joy to be with because they are at the prime of their health. Gender: Female English Bulldogs may cost you a bit more than a male because of their breeding potential. Potential owners and Bully enthusiasts also request a female pup more than males because of their better temperament. The demand pushes the price of female English Bulldogs to a higher cost. Rarer colors like tri-color , merle , and blue English Bulldogs are typically much more expensive. Bloodline: A champion English Bulldog puppy might cost three to four times as much as typical English Bulldog puppies. They are known to exhibit the best physique, temperament, and health. Plus, they are perfect for competitions. Reputable breeders often have a long history of breeding success. Their high prices are also backed by health guarantees and other safeguards. Health Screenings: Before selling their puppies, many breeders evaluate them for health problems. They sell their puppy for a higher price if it is deemed to be in excellent health. Regardless, it is still a good idea to look for an English Bulldog puppy that comes with a health guarantee. With this list, you might already have your own cost estimation for the pup you want. English Bullies that have been rescued have already been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and have complete registration documents. Before being put up for adoption, they undergo retraining and behavioral rehabilitation as well. Rescues often house more adult Bullies as puppies are more likely to be adopted immediately. To help you in purchasing, we have compiled a list of all the initial expenses for owning an English Bulldog: Food and Treats: One of the basic items you should get for your English Bulldog is high-quality dog food and a few treat packages for on-hand training. You may need to buy a few of them to see which one works best for your dog. As a fairly slobber-ish canine, you might have a hard time cleaning leftover dog food from a cheap container. Bed: To prevent your English Bulldog from abnormal physical disorders, it is best to invest in a high-quality dog bed. A crate may also be a safe haven for your dog when you are not home or when you have visitors. Leashes and Collars: Some of the first things you should get for your English Bulldog are leashes and collars. Be sure to get one that is a good fit for your dog. Metal nameplates included in these items that are less likely to corrode might cost a little extra. Toys: Chew toys that are easy to pick up and clean are ideal for English Bulldogs. Choose interactive and sturdy toys that will stimulate their high intelligence and withstand their strong jaws. Grooming Essentials: Brushing English Bulldogs a few times a week should keep them looking nice, and their shedding would be manageable. Cleaning moisture that could be trapped under their wrinkles is also a must. Nail clippers and a doggy toothbrush are good investments, too. Initial Vet Visits: English Bulldog puppies require initial vet examinations to ensure that they are healthy. Dog License: For an English Bulldog puppy, a license is a necessity. The dog microchip should have all your important contact information as the owner, increasing the chances of your Bully being returned to you as soon as possible if they get lost. Despite their ancestry, English Bulldogs are not ferocious anymore but laid back and affectionate. Bulldogs are one of the most recognizable dog breeds in the world. Ethical breeders provide health screenings for their puppies and answer all your questions regarding their parents, breeding, and living conditions. Bulldogs from reputable breeders cost more due to high breeding expenses. Other breeding costs include genetic testing, vet bills, and preparation expenses. On the other hand, when you adopt from a Bulldog rescue, the dog is usually spayed or neutered and up to date on vaccinations. Age: Caring for a newborn Bulldogs takes time, money, and energy. Older puppies or adolescent Bulldogs will cost less than newborns. Gender: The price for female English Bulldogs might be slightly higher in some cases, but the difference is usually negligible. Coat Color: Coat color can seriously affect the price of the dog because some colors and patterns are pretty rare. Standard coat colors include white, fawn, red, brindle, and their combinations. Bulldogs with these colors and patterns fall within the average range price. Meanwhile, rarer colors and patterns are more expensive. The newest colors, like merle or lilac, are even more costly. These numbers are based on the essentials like supplies, food, grooming costs, medical expenses, training costs, with microchip and license included.
