Some of these you can help prevent, while others are out of your immediate control. If your GSD carries the genes for ears that lie down, instead of standing erect, then more than likely they will have floppy ears. This means they may have ears that never stand up and are floppy for life. Breeding Some breeders choose to pair parents that both have large, erect ears. And some buyers and owners prefer this larger style of ears for show or aesthetic purposes. But, there is some theory that breeding a German Shepherd with larger and larger ears might contribute to ears that stay flopped over. Always see the parents of the puppy you buy from the breeder on the premises to see their appearance. Physical Damage or Accidents Puppies are active and mischievous and can get into plenty of trouble. This includes physical damage or accidents that have the cartilage or muscles in their ears. If this happens their ears may suffer long-term damage and not stand up naturally on their own. So watch out for a rough play that might lead to ear damage. And, if your pup has been in an accident that hurt their ears, take them immediately to the vets. Improper and Poor Nutrition German Shepherds need balanced nutrition during crucial growing stages, including vitamins and minerals that aid in cartilage and muscle development of their ears. You should ensure your dog gets the right nutrition from the start to avoid any issues. Along with Vitamin D, calcium helps strengthen the cartilage to aid in building a strong foundation for the ears to stand up later. Neglecting Ear Cleaning Puppies still need ear cleaning when dirt and build-up are overly present. Dirty ears that become neglected can inhibit proper growth and cause discomfort for your dog, causing them to excessively scratch their ears which can cause damage. This could cause them more harm! Instead, wipe away the dirt from the skin of the ear with a warm, damp washcloth or use special ear cleaning wipes. A dog with one floppy ear and one ear upright is totally normal. Occasionally, your German Shepherd might have one floppy ear and one ear standing upright. If they are a small puppy then they are most likely growing and the one ear down still needs time to go upright naturally. These are some of the best techniques that will help their ears to stand up. They only need to sit inside the ear enough to support cartilage growth. Make sure you check for any creases or folds in their ears before moving on to the next step. Repeat in the other ear. Make a Popsicle Support Now, take the popsicle sticks and place them at the top of the foam rollers both ears should have foam rollers in them at this point. You might need another pair of hands to help with this, so ask your family or friends to help. Take the self-adhering waterproof tape and place a medium-size piece across and around the two foam rollers and popsicle sticks. This ensures even and symmetrical growth. Make a bridge across their ears instead. If your German Shepherd puppy is 9 months old and their ears still flop over, please see your vet for further assistance. When in doubt, get your vet to show you what to do for their ears. Your puppy might become annoyed with the tape on their ears, so they may need close supervision and even some distraction during the taping process. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a German Shepherd that has floppy ears and putting them at risk to have any unnecessary surgery to get their ears to stand up can cause them pain. Speak to your vet about the side effects and pain associated with ear implants. You can help prevent floppy ears in your dog by taking the appropriate steps to keep them healthy. The top ways to help a GSD with floppy ears include: 1. Feed them a high-quality food Giving your dog the proper nutrition for optimum growth is a necessity, especially when they are puppies and growing rapidly. Choose a puppy food with the correct ratio of nutrients and vitamins to ensure they get the correct building blocks for development. When you choose to give them treats, pick ones from this list of the best healthy dog treats for German Shepherd puppies. Provide them with the proper chew toys Chewing helps to strengthen the muscles that surround the ears. Or worse… Injure them. Learn to play and discipline a German Shepherd puppy the right way to avoid accidental ear injuries or damage. German Shepherds with ears that are floppy are a joy to own, no matter their age! She has a Bachelor of Science degree, with Honors, and has been training dogs for over a decade. Related Posts. Aug 18, Share German Shepherds have a distinctive look that includes alert, erect ears. For most pups, the ear cartilage begins to harden around week 20, or when the pup is finished teething. At that point, it can take up to 20 weeks for the ears to stand up fully. This can vary by the individual, however. Like human ears, dog ears are made of cartilage. As they grow and gain nutrition, German Shepherds develop stronger and stronger cartilage to support those ears. Typically, puppies at weeks will have floppy ears that occasionally stand up but quickly fall back down. Around week 20, or 5 months, your pup is done teething and its ears will begin to harden and stand. Your vet may have some suggestions to help the process along. If your pup reaches 8 months and still has floppy ears, the chance of them standing on their own is slim. Some breeders try to breed for larger ears, leading to ears that are too heavy to stand up. If strong, alert ears are important to you, be sure to look for a pup with parents that have erect ears. If the ears sustain trauma during that time, it can cause permanent damage to the cartilage. If your puppy gets parasites, it can impact healthy development, which includes the hardening of its ear cartilage. Be sure to take your puppy to the vet regularly and have routine fecal exams to check for worms and other parasites. Your vet can recommend an appropriate deworming protocol for your growing puppy and treat parasites if they occur. However, if you want your puppy to have strong, alert ears, you can help the process along in a number of ways. In an effort to move ear development along, some owners will add supplements like calcium. Chew toys are also good for teething and keeping your puppy occupied. German Shepherds are strong, even as pups, so be sure to choose solid, durable chew toys that are safe and appropriate for your puppy. It should only be used as a last resort, however. If you use tape too early, it can hinder natural development. That said, if you wait until the seventh or eighth month, it may be too late to help. Glue the ends of the popsicle stick to the tape on both ears, horizontally. Once a week, remove the popsicle stick, foam, and tape. If the ears stand on their own, leave them. Related Reads:. Well, there are a few different possible explanations. Causes can vary from age-related to genetic and medical issues. All puppies are born with soft, floppy ears. This is because the cartilage and muscles in their ears have not developed yet. Although some breeds, like Spaniels and Poodles, always have floppy ears, others, like most Shepherd breeds , almost always have pointy, pricked, upright ones. In such breeds, their ears should start to stand up between weeks of age as the bones and muscles in their bodies develop and strengthen. Are they both floppy — or is only one of them drooping whilst the other stands up normally? Teething Several young puppies experience floppy ears during teething. Teething is a period that all infant mammals go through, in which their baby or milk teeth fall out and their adult teeth grow in. It starts at around three weeks old and ends at months of age, although it can take longer. So, their bodies may draw calcium out of other areas, such as the ears, weakening their skeletal structure and making them flop. You may even notice that their ears look different every day during this period. They might be up-right one day, then floppy the next, or even change throughout the day depending on their mood. Their ears will return back to their original shape as soon as their hormones calm down. Although most German Shepherds have up-right ears, some can have floppy or semi-pricked ones. Judges of dog shows and competitions also often look for large ears in the breed. Poor nutrition during puppyhood As mentioned above, calcium is needed to develop and strengthen the cartilage in the ears in order for them to stand up. Vitamin D is also needed to keep bones healthy and strong. This is especially common in rescue dogs that come from puppy farms, homelessness, and neglectful backgrounds. Always buy from reputable breeders! Other symptoms of calcium and vitamin D deficiencies include muscle spasms and joint issues. If severe, nutrient deficiencies can be deadly. Both conditions require urgent veterinary attention, and treatments will likely include special diets and supplements. Similar to malnutrition, this is common in dogs that come from a background of neglect or homelessness. A build-up of wax, debris, or dirt can make the ears heavy and cause them to droop. Poor hygiene As we mentioned above, poor ear hygiene can lead to drooping of the ears. It can also lead to smelliness and infection. All dogs have self-cleaning mechanisms in their ears. However, allergies and hormone imbalances can cause disruptions to the mechanisms, meaning they require some extra care. Dogs can be allergic to environmental allergens like pollen, household cleaning products, and foods like wheat and dairy. Other symptoms of allergies can include skin irritation, coughing, sneezing, runny noses and eyes, and stomach upsets. Each has different symptoms, but they often include drastic changes in energy, coat, thirst, appetite, and weight. German Shepherds are also particularly prone to experiencing hormonal disorders. Ear mites Another cause of ear drooping in German Shepherds is ear mites. Ear mites can be picked up outdoors, or from coming into contact with another animal with the condition. The inflammation from the infestation can cause droopiness in the affected ear. Other symptoms include excessive itchiness, and redness, bleeding, and swelling from the constant scratching. If left untreated, the infestation can cause disease, which can lead to hearing loss and balance issues. Infection Ear infections can be bacterial or fungal, and they can affect both the inner or outer ear. They are most often picked up after exposure to water, and the inflammation can cause the affected ear to droop. Other symptoms can include redness, swelling, irritation, discharge, and excessive head shaking or scratching at the ear. Vets can treat ear infections with antibacterial or antifungal medications, but they need to be treated quickly before they spread or cause permanent damage. Trauma Physical trauma to the ears can also cause them to droop. The most common trauma that causes changes to the shape of the ears in German Shepherds are bites from fighting with other dogs. If your dog has a visible injury to their ear, you should take them to see their vet to check it over and dress any wounds to prevent infection. Make sure to brush your GSD regularly, also around the head and ears — these dogs shed heavily! You can get these over-the-counter at your vet, online, or in a pet store. You can also use a few drops of olive oil for wax build-up, but not too much. To administer, get a towel and ask your dog to lie down in a comfortable place in the home. Then, massage the mase of their ears for around 30 seconds to help it loosen any wax or dirt. Finally, allow your dog to shake their head and use the towel to catch what comes out. That said, if they have particularly problem ears, you should ask your vet and do it however often they suggest, which could be weekly or monthly. However, this is very controversial. It is not yet illegal in the USA, but it is also not something that we would recommend outside of medical necessity, as it can be unnecessarily stressful and painful for dogs. The method known as taping is done by placing something, usually tape, inside the ear to make it stand up straight and grow into that position permanently. It can be effective when done during puppyhood and usually takes weeks to work. As we mentioned above, nutritional deficiencies can cause the ears to flop. Puppies should eat nutritionally complete and balanced food that is enriched with calcium, vitamin D, and DHA for healthy bone and brain development, as well as high-quality protein sources like chicken and fish for strong muscles, and tasty, fiber-rich fruits and veggies. All puppies should have a handful of strong, hardy chew toys to avoid being destroyed during teething, but they can also help the ears to stand up. This is because the ears are connected to the jaw. So, strong jaw muscles means stronger ears, too! Finally, you should avoid playing too rough with your pup and interacting with boisterous dogs to prevent accidents and traumas, which, as we mentioned above, could damage or change the shape of their ears. Dogs communicate with us owners in many ways; they bark, they growl, and they use their bodies. Body language is a key part of understanding how your dog is feeling. Dogs use their entire bodies to communicate; including their tails, their eyes, and their ears! This often happens when a suspicious stranger or an unknown or unfriendly dog is approaching, or when there is a strange noise inside the home. When their ears go back or downwards, it could simply mean that they are listening, or it could indicate either excitement or anxiety. Excited dogs may whine, wag their tails very quickly, and run towards what they are excited about. This happens a lot when dogs are greeting a loved one. An anxious dog, on the other hand, may lower their head and cower their bodies away from what is causing their anxiety. If they are frightened, they may also tremble and whine, and if they are feeling angry or threatened, they may show their teeth and growl. This can happen when a dog is exposed to a phobia or an aggressive dog. It can be difficult to determine exactly how a mixed dog will look. Different pups from the same litter can also present with different traits from their siblings. That said, certain traits, like short hair, for example, are genetically dominant and therefore will be passed on over others, like long hair, which is genetically recessive. Dominant traits are those that require only one copy of a specific gene for the trait to be passed down to a pup. Recessive traits, on the other hand, need two copies; one from each parent. So, which is dominant; pricked or floppy ears? The answer is — floppy ears! Floppy ears are genetically dominant to pricked ears in dogs. That said, different ear shapes in dogs does tend to reflect their original working purpose. For example, the Spaniel, a gun dog, has floppy ears that gather and hold scent particles. This helped them track down what they were looking for much faster back in the day. German Shepherds, on the other hand, along with other wolf-like breeds, such as the Siberian Husky , have pricked, pointed ears. This is thought to aid their hearing during guard work, keep their body temperature under control during strenuous hunts, and give them an alert look to ward off predators. This may be why people are statistically more likely to perceive dogs with pricked ears as more threatening, according to research conducted by James Madison University, USA, in .This is not necessarily true, however, as any dog lover will know. It is likely down to something old and instinctual, as they also discovered that people perceived coat colors differently, too. The type of ears that a dog has can affect their hearing. Whether a dog has pricked ears or floppy ears, they have 18 different muscles that control them to funnel sounds from all different directions. A healthy-hearing dog of any kind can still hear from 40 to 60, hertz, which is more than double what human ears can hear! Starting out just training her own Border Collies, she gradually expanded to local classes and seminars, now she travels as far as Europe and teaches students all over the world on how to train their dogs in a positive, bonding, game-based way. She is known for her clear, step-by-step training that lets beginners and advanced dog trainers see lasting results very quickly.
A Beagador puppy should grow into a medium-sized, chunky adult although there can be some variation. At the opposite end of the spectrum are the show type Labs - big, chunky dogs that carry far more weight. These Labs can top the scales at a hefty 80 lbs 36 kg at adulthood, while also reaching a not too shabby .In contrast, if you have ever seen a pack of Beagles you will understand that they are far more uniform in size. This medium-sized hound reaches an adult weight of around lbs kg , with a maximum height of 15 inches 38 cm. Your best bet is to look at the parents, especially the Lab side of the equation. As a rough estimate, they are likely to range from between inches tall 61 cm with a weight range of lbs 11 - 20 kg ; making them a medium-sized dog. Despite this, remember that there are no guarantees when producing a cross and there can often be a wide variation between a single litter of puppies! When buying a puppy, ensure that both parents have still been health tested. Major problems for the Labrador and Beagle include hip dysplasia and degenerative eye conditions ; both of which are hereditary. This means that the problem can be passed down from the parents to the puppies. The American Kennel Club provides a list of health checks that breeders should adhere to, ask the breeder to see the relevant paperwork before you buy. It is easy to get carried away when faced with a litter of adorable puppies, but problems such as hip dysplasia can cause your little bundle of fluff a world of pain when they mature and could result in them needing surgery. At the end of the day, always ensure your little Labbe puppy has been bred not just for looks, but also health and temperament too. How easy will a Beagle Lab mix be to train? The Labbeagle is a mix of two very different types of dog. On the one hand, you have the Labrador; a powerful, agile gundog that was historically bred to spend the whole day out in the field retrieving game shot by his owner. They are used to being exceptionally obedient , responding to commands in an instant. In contrast to this is the Beagle who needed to be capable of independent working, using their exceptional sense of smell to track prey and hunt it down with little input from people. With such variation between the two parents, your Labbe puppies personality can be a little unpredictable! You may have a pup that enjoys learning and in some respects is easy to train. Yet be prepared that you might also have a puppy that develops selective deafness should something more exciting come along! A Labbe puppy and adult can often have a mind of their own, something a new owner should be prepared for. Of course, this situation can be mitigated by ensuring your puppy attends training classes as soon as their vaccines have been completed. Not only will they learn to respond to commands amid distractions, but it also provides a safe environment for them to socialize with other dogs. Otherwise, you could find they take you hunting for the day! They can be incredibly vocal! Cats especially will soon make a break for it and if your Beagador decides to give chase, not only could they hurt the cat but they could also hurt themselves if they run into a road. Their coat might be short, but be prepared for them to shed lots of hair Both the Beagle and Labrador have short, no-nonsense coats suitable for an active working dog. However, do not be deceived by this. Although short, your Beagle Lab is likely to shed lots of hair, particularly when the seasons change. Not only will this help keep your home cleaner but it can also help cut down on the hoovering! Both breeds have been bred to work well with people, and this easygoing nature ensures that as long as the children are well behaved, your dog will be too. Cuddle time is a winner with this mix, and they are also exceptionally loyal. Of course, it is important to remember that this temperament will come from you puppies parents too, so again make sure you meet them before you buy. If this sounds like your sort of dog, do not get a Labbeagle! This breed has a strong working instinct gained from both its parents, resulting in a dog that needs not only physical exercise but mental stimulation too. If these needs are not met, the result can be a noisy, destructive dog capable of doing some serious furniture damage when you are away from home. Try to avoid leaving your Beagle Lab mix for more than a few hours at a time. I would aim for two decent walks a day one hour each ; this is the bare minimum that they should receive. This will ensure that they can stretch their legs, meet other doggy friends and have a good sniff around to work that fantastic nose of theirs. This regular exercise will also ensure that they avoid becoming overweight. By ensuring they have plenty of free running time, you will keep off the pounds. An obese dog is not only at risk from weight-related diseases such as diabetes and arthritis, but ultimately they will have a shorter lifespan too. Conclusion If your idea of a dream dog is a loving sofa companion that will also enjoy spending several hours each day galavanting around the countryside with you, then a Labrador-Beagle mix could be the dog for you. Just remember to put in the hours with the training in the early days, and you will be rewarded with a well-mannered pet in the long run. Own a Labbe already? Thinking of getting one? The beagle Lab mix dog is a designer breed, developed by crossing a purebred Labrador retriever and a purebred beagle. This mix goes by several names, including beagador, labbe, labbe retriever, and labeagle. While both parent breeds are officially recognized by the American Kennel Club, the beagador is considered a designer dog breed. While some Labrador beagle mix dogs are a perfect blend of their parent breeds, others take more after one parent than the other. Keeping that in mind, there are a few things you can expect to see in your mix in terms of size and coat. Size As an offspring of a beagle and Labrador retriever, your Lab beagle mix will likely be a medium-sized dog. Most labbe retrievers are between 19 and 24 inches high at withers and weigh between 30 and 80 pounds when fully grown. Color There are three officially recognized Labrador colors — yellow , black, and chocolate. However, the beagle has 25 possible color combinations and can come in a variety of colors, including tan, brown, white, lemon, blue, black, red, fawn, bluetick, and redtick. Like all other double-coated breeds, your labeagle is going to shed moderately all year round and lose even more hair during the shedding season. Beagle Lab Dog Character There is no way of guessing the exact personality and temperament of any mixed-breed dog, including the beagle Lab dog. People-loving and affectionate, this mix makes a great family dog and gets along nicely with children who know how to play and interact with a dog. Before you welcome a beagle and Lab mix into your home, know that these dogs are very social creatures that crave attention and companionship. When not provided with the affection and attention they need, labbes can develop behavioral problems and turn to digging and howling. Beagadors need up to one hour of vigorous exercise every day, and they generally enjoy all sorts of activities. Jogging, hiking, swimming, and cycling are just a few of many things you can do with your dog to keep them exercised. A word of caution though — make sure you are using a leash while out and about with your mix. Beagles are scent hounds, and your mix will likely inherit a strong urge to sniff and chase after new scents. These dogs thrive and are the happiest when included in all family activities. If you have a fenced backyard, let your dog out to run, play, and sniff new scents for as long as they want to. Intellectual Stimulation Besides being highly energetic, labbe retrievers are also very smart and can get bored without proper mental stimulation. And when they are bored, lebbes are also destructive and will resort to chewing, digging, and howling just to have some fun. Companionship Beagadors are social and people-loving dogs that like to be involved in all family activities. They are best suited for larger families or homes that are never empty, meaning your dog will rarely, if ever, stay home alone. They crave attention and companionship and can easily develop behavioral issues when left alone at home. Grooming The beagle Labrador mix is a low-maintenance dog when it comes to grooming. When it comes to bathing, bathe your beagador once every two months or as needed using a mild dog shampoo. Diet The ideal diet for the Labrador beagle mix should be formulated for medium-sized dogs with high energy. Please note, like their parent breeds, beagadors tend to overeat and can easily pack on the extra pounds and become obese. The Labrador beagle mix is generally healthy, but they can inherit the same health problems that are seen in their parent breeds. These include: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: This condition is commonly seen in Labs and is characterized by malformation of the hip and elbow joints. Both of these conditions are extremely painful for the dog and can lead to arthritis, mobility issues, and lameness. Epilepsy: This is a neurological condition and the most common cause of seizures in dogs. Epilepsy is an inherited disorder that is commonly seen in beagles. Cherry Eye: This is another condition that is more often diagnosed in beagles than Labs. Life Expectancy The Lab beagle mix has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. However, with proper care and regular veterinary checkups, beagadors can live longer and reach senior years completely healthy. Training a beagador might go either way, depending on which parent your pup takes more after. Most Labrador beagle mix dogs are highly intelligent and eager-to-please, just like their Lab parents. To keep your pooch interested in learning and training, use positive reinforcement, and always give your dog a reward when they follow your command. Reward-based training has been proven as the most effective training method and will give results even if your mix is too headstrong for its own good. Besides training, you should also start socializing your mix from an early age. Start exposing your beagador to different people, situations, places, and scents after they receive all the necessary vaccines. This way, your dog will get used to interacting with other people and animals from a young age and grow up into a friendly and outgoing dog. The Lab beagle mix makes a great pet and companion to active people and families with children. But, if you are active, spend most of your time outdoors, and have a fenced backyard the beagador might just be the perfect dog for you! As always, talk with the breeder first and schedule an appointment to meet the puppy and the mother. They will also be able to provide health certificates for the puppies and the parents that show their dogs are completely healthy. The exact price of the puppy will depend on the breeder, your location, lineage, and supply and demand. History Of The Breeds Beagle The beagle is a small breed of scent hound, primarily developed to track and hunt small game, mostly rabbits and hare. While beagles are still used by hunters as scent hounds, they also make wonderful family pets and companions. Labrador Retriever The Labrador retriever originated in Newfoundland, where it was originally used by fishermen to retrieve fish. The breed was later brought to England where it was developed into a hard worker and companion we know today. Eager-to-please, friendly, loyal, and kind are just a few of many traits that make Labradors universally loved and extremely popular. Labrador retrievers make amazing family companions and pets and are also used as search and rescue dogs and service dogs. Lab beagle mixes make wonderful family pets to active people or families with children. They are social, playful, and energetic dogs that like to be involved in all family activities and spend time with their owners. Keep in mind that beagadors can easily become bored and destructive if not properly exercised. How much do beagadors cost? Keep in mind that this is the average cost and you might end up spending more depending on the breeder, your location, and supply and demand for Labrador beagle mix puppies. Do beagadors like swimming? Depending on which parent breed it takes after more, your Lab beagle mix might enjoy swimming. If your beagador is anything like their Labrador retriever parent, they will love to swim in the water. Conclusion The increasingly popular beagle Lab mix makes a great companion and family pet to active people and families with children. Medium in size, easy to groom, and generally healthy, beagadors are suited for novice and experienced owners alike. Before you welcome a Labrador beagle mix into your home, make sure you can: Keep your dog exercised and mentally stimulated Have a fenced backyard for your mix to play in Have enough free time to interact and play with your beagador every day Do you have a Beagle Lab Mix? Two of the most popular breeds of dog in the United States today, it is no wonder than the Beagle Lab Mix is also gaining popularity. Also known as the Beagador, Labbe and Labbeag, these dogs are kind and fun loving, making excellent companions and family dogs. The Labrador ranks at number one as the most popular dog in America, while the Beagle sits at number six. Breed Origin To understand where the Beagle Lab Mix comes from, we can take a look at the origins of their parent breeds. The Labrador, as we mentioned above, is the most popular breed of dog in America. Labradors were originally bred as gun dogs in the s and used to accompany hunters and retrieve animals that had been shot. They were also used in Newfoundland to retrieve fish that came in off the trawl, which is why they love the water. Their loyal and loving nature mean that they quickly became a very popular family dog and are still used today as working dogs, such as guide dogs. The Beagle as we know it today was bred around the 11th century when William the Conquer brought the Talbot a now extinct breed to England. Very little is known about the origin of the Beagle Lab Mix, but it is thought these dogs were first introduced in the s. It is also believed that they originated in America. Characteristics Of The Beagle Lab Mix The Beagador is a hybrid breed and so knowing the exact traits and characteristics of this dog can be difficult. One litter may take after the Labrador parent more, while another litter may inherit more traits from their Beagle parent. Finding a Beagle Lab Mix can be difficult because breeders are limited. These dogs normally have the face and ears of a Beagle, with the coat and coloring of a Labrador. They can stand between 13 and 24 inches tall and weigh anywhere between 20 and 70 lbs. It may feel hard to touch. Both the Beagle and the Labrador have water resistant coats that shed seasonally. We will go into more detail about how to groom these pups later on. This means that they can be yellow, chocolate or black. However, they can also take after their Beagle parent, who has 25 different possible coat color combinations! The most common are white, tan, brown, red, blue, black, fawn, lemon, blue tick and white tick. Temperament With excellent temperaments from both parent breeds, it is no surprise that the Beagle Lab Mix also has a great temperament. These dogs are a friendly and loving, making excellent family dogs. They get on very well with people, especially those they know, and are very patient. A very devoted dog, they can suffer from separation anxiety when left alone for too long, so this is not the pup for you if you are going to be out for hours at a time. The Beagador can become very vocal when they feel nervous or threatened, so this is one of the reasons why they make an excellent watchdog or guard dog! However, they also bark when they are bored, so keeping them entertained with toys is very important. If they become too bored, they can begin to exhibit destructive behaviors so you must make sure they get enough exercise. Due to their patience, the Beagle Lab Mix will play for hours before they give up. However, once they are done playing, they will happily curl up on the couch next to you and watch TV! This makes them the perfect companion dog. Lifespan The Lab Beagle Mix dog has a life expectancy between 10 and 12 years old. Known Health Issues Beagle Lab Mixes are generally a pretty healthy dog, thanks to the crossbreeding that has helped eliminate some health problems. However, there are still some health concerns that you must know about before you think about purchasing one of these pups. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. Elbow Dysplasia — this is a common condition in large breed dogs. It can be caused by different growth rates and can cause lameness. It can be fixed with surgery. Intervertebral Disc Disease — this is when the jelly-like layer of the intervertebral discs protrudes into the spinal canal and pushes against the spinal cord. This can cause pain, paralysis or lack of bladder control. It can be treated with surgery. Gastric Torsion Bloat — this is potentially fatal. You need to know the symptoms of it. Feeding your dog smaller more frequent meals instead of one big meal can help to reduce the risk. There is also a small risk of the Beagle Lab Mix developing epilepsy, eye problems such as cataracts or progressive retinal atrophy PRA , heart defects and osteochondritis dissecans. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parent breeds and will not crossbreed if there is a chance of passing on any severe issues to offspring. Daily Life Now we know all about the traits and characteristics of the Beagle Lab Mix, we can take a look at what everyday life with one of these pups is really like. We will cover their food and diet, their exercise requirements and their grooming needs. These dogs love food! These dogs are active and therefore need around three cups of food a day. Positive reinforcement is also considered effective and impactful in training. Beagle mixed with Labrador and Families There are a few things to consider before buying this hybrid. Both its parent breeds are energetic and intelligent, so they might need additional room to grow and play, especially if it inherits the size of its Labrador Retriever parent. There will also be a time that you will need to invest much money and time in positive reinforcement. The natural curiosity and inquisitiveness of its parent breeds may result in the hybrid excessively wandering off, so you might need to invest in an excellent fenced-in yard. Beagle Lab hybrids are also great as a family pet for people who have kids of all ages. The hybrid tends to be loyal and patient to its family and can get along well even with the other dogs and house pets. Glaucoma Canine glaucoma actually refers to an entire group of eye conditions that affect the optic nerve. Dogs with this problem may lose their vision entirely over time. Others may experience pain and redness around their eyes to accompany this vision loss. Cherry Eye Cherry eye is another canine eye disorder that is often seen in the Beagle parent. You may notice redness and excessive itching or rubbing in dogs with cherry eye. Progressive Retinal Atrophy This is another eye disorder, often seen in the Labrador parent of the Beagador. Over time, dogs with PRA will lose their sight completely. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Hip and elbow dysplasia are a joint disorder commonly seen in the Labrador Retriever. This can lead to pain and trouble moving and walking. But, luckily health tests are available for this issue, so dogs with high risk can be avoided when breeding Beagadors. Luxating Patella Luxating Patella is also known as a dislocated kneecap. If your dog has this problem, their kneecap will slide or move out of its normal place. This can cause problems walking and pain. Hypothyroidism Dogs with hypothyroidism will have an underactive thyroid gland, slowing down their metabolism. It may be soft like a Beagle, or water repellant like a Labrador. A Beagador will need regular brushing to maintain a healthy coat. Regular brushing will also reduce shedding. It will likely not be suitable for people who suffer from allergies. Based on the average lifespans of the parent breeds, the expected lifespan of a Beagle Lab mix is years. A well trained Beagador will be happy to accompany the family on outdoor adventures, hikes in the woods, or a visit to the lake. Beagle Lab mixes are pack animals that need to be with their family. Once upon a time, the Labrador was actually known as St. In modern times, the Lab is bred as a doting family pet. In addition, Labs are known as excellent guide dogs for the blind. Their intelligence and loyalty make them great service animals to their human companions. Just like the Lab, Beagles were bred primarily for hunting. Beagles are also known for a keen sense of smell and their signature bark, which comes in handy when leading hunters to a fallen game. Crossbred dogs can inherit behavioral traits from either purebred parent. In general, Labs are widely known as intelligent dogs, eager to please and easy to train. They are excellent family dogs and do well with children and other pets. But Labs like to chew! As such, they require an abundance of toys and bones to reduce the chances of damaged furniture and flooring. Labs are also high-energy dogs requiring regular exercise and love nothing more than being part of fun family activities. Beagles are known to be playful, affectionate, and highly energetic, meaning they crave constant activity and need a sufficient amount of exercise. Beagles are also known to love the outdoors. Since they are easy to train, Beagles do well in homes with children, just like the Lab. However, they are quite vocal and known for their boisterous bark! The Beagle has 25 possible color combinations, with ten colors making up those combinations—tan, white, brown, lemon, red, blue, black, bluetick, redtick, and fawn. The full-grown Labrador will be 22 to 25 inches and weigh about 55 to 80 pounds. An adult Beagle is typically 13 to 15 inches tall and weighs about 20 to 30 pounds. In general, a full grown Beagle Lab Mix will be a medium sized dog that about 19 to 24 inches and 25 to 45 pounds. Again, size, height, and weight can vary depending on the purebred parents. Both the Lab and the Beagle have similar weather-resistant coats that shed seasonally. So, the Beagle Lab mix is going to require weekly grooming and brushing to help keep its coat shiny and healthy. Training and Exercising Your Beagle Lab Mix Since the temperament of the Beagle and Lab are quite similar, a Lab Beagle Mix puppy is expected to be an intelligent, highly energetic, and incredibly loyal crossbreed. Like his parents, the Lab Beagle Mix will be eager to please and easy to train. This can include daily walks on public trails or paths, hanging out in parks, and switching up scenery to get your dog used to new faces, sounds, and smells. Labrador Beagle Mixes are known to suffer separation anxiety and may exhibit destructive behavior when left alone too long. If they become bored, the Beagle Lab Mix will sometimes bark, or even howl. Consistent exercise and a variety of toys will help keep your Beagle Lab Mix calm and entertained while you are away. As with all breeds, some health problems are passed down from generation to generation, and the purebred Lab is no exception. Labs are known to suffer loose knee joints, elbow and hip dysplasia, ruptured ligaments in their hind legs, eye disease, heart disease, epilepsy, cancer, and chronic allergies. Labs are also more prone than the average dog to gastrointestinal problems and bloating. Early health screening of your Beagle Lab mix can help to avoid or prepare for future problems. The breed originated in Germany, where it was used as a working dog on farms and in law enforcement. German Shepherds are large dogs, with males averaging about 30 inches tall and females averaging about 28 inches tall. They have a muscular build and a thick coat of fur that can be either black, brown, or tan in color. German Shepherds are intelligent and easy to train, making them excellent pets for families with children. They are also loyal and protective, making them good guard dogs. However, German Shepherds can be aggressive if not properly trained, so it is important to socialize them from an early age. This is due to the fact that these two breeds are very different in size and therefore can't mate naturally. The process of breeding them would involve artificial insemination, which is complicated and expensive. When making a hybrid between two different dog breeds, it is important to consider the size difference. In general, the female should be of the larger breed, as she needs to have the capacity to carry the litter. This is particularly important when there is a noticeable size difference between the two breeds, as is the case with a Chihuahua and a German Shepherd. The German Shepherd is typically nearly twice the size of a Chihuahua, meaning that the Chihuahua simply doesn't have the ability to carry a litter of German Shepherd hybrids. As a result, breeders need to be sure to use a German Shepherd female when creating this particular mix. The German Shepherd Chihuahua mix is not recognized by the A. Shepchi dogs are usually between 8 and 60 pounds, and they stand 8 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder. They have long faces with triangular ears, and their tails can be long or short. They are very loyal and protective of their family and make great guard dogs. They are also intelligent and easily trained. However, they can be very stubborn and willful at times. They need firm, consistent training and socialization from an early age to prevent behavioral problems from developing. The Chihuahua German Shepherd mix is a versatile dog that can do well in a variety of homes, as long as adequate exercise and training are provided. A post shared by Dogs Humans Luv dogshumansluv Shep-Chi and other pets When it comes to getting along with other pets, it really depends on the individual dog's personality. Some Chihuahua German Shepherd mixes are very social and enjoy being around other animals, while others may be more aloof or even aggressive. Generally speaking, however, Chihuahua German Shepherd mixes tend to get along well with other animals if they are introduced and socialized from a young age. It's important to remember that all dogs, regardless of breed, should be supervised around other animals until you are confident that they can play nice. And that can be very difficult to do. Posted on Last updated: Categories Chihuahua , German Shepherds If you want your household to be a combination of a miniature dog and a large breed, then two obvious picks are a Chihuahua and a German Shepherd. These are popular dogs on their own, so it makes sense to want to have them both in your family. But is this really the best combination? Do these two dog breeds get along? German Shepherds and Chihuahuas can get along, and although they have strong, dominant personalities, bringing them together can be difficult. Ideally, you want them to get both as puppies. If you cannot, then introduce them gradually and stay alert so you can correct behaviors before they become a habit. Check out this cute video clip of a German Shepherd playing with his Chihuahua buddy and being ever so gentle: German Shepherd vs. Chihuahua The German Shepherd, for the most part, has a somewhat laid-back personality and can make a good first dog. However, this does not mean that he is not a dominant dog that wants to be in charge of the home. Combined with their extreme loyalty to their owners, this aloof dog makes an excellent watchdog. The loyalty means he will not be too keen on another dog joining the family. The Chihuahua, on the other hand, is a stubborn dog that is lively, confident, and fun. He has a courageous attitude, which is evident from his behavior. Some owners describe Chihuahuas as having an almost terrier-like temperament. We know how affectionate, fun-loving, and loyal both breeds are, and understand why you want to have both by your side. But getting these two to get along needs to be done the right way. How to Have a Happy Home with a Chihuahua and a German Shepherd If you tossed these two breeds into a room and crossed your fingers, you would be setting your furry friends up for disaster. These two breeds are not likely to get along with each other right off the bat. This is due to their dominant personalities. Well, you will be glad to know that there are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to owning a Chihuahua and a German Shepherd in the same home: Socialize at a Young Age Perhaps the best thing you can do for either breed is to thoroughly socialize them when they are younger. Socialization as well as training will help to get your dog used to being around other dogs, which will help to cease a bit of that dominant trait and allow a friendlier, more submissive side to form. Let Them Grow Up Together One easy way to know if your Chihuahua and German Shepherd will be able to live happily together is to get them both as puppies and let them grow up together. Of course, this is not always ideal or even possible. But if you can, you should. This is because males are far more dominant and controlling in nature. They will not want to share their area with another male in fear that the other male could dominate the space. Therefore, never have the same gender. If you have a male German Shepherd, opt for a female Chihuahua. If you have a female German Shepherd, then you should consider getting a male Chihuahua. This will make the entire process easier. Introducing the Two Together If you are not able to start the dogs off together at birth, do not think you are entirely out of luck. While it will take a lot more effort and time on your part, you can bring the German Shepherd and Chihuahua into one home successfully. Here are a few ways to make sure you have a happy ending: Go slow. You should not expect instant happiness from either dog. Start with small visits here and there. Always keep an eye on them. You will need to do this in the long haul, but especially in the first few visits. You do not want any fights breaking out or any dog getting hurt, so always keep an eye on the two. Reward good behavior. If you see the two soon-to-be pals getting along, then you should absolutely reward their good behavior. This will show the dogs that they are doing something good and should continue this behavior. Use commands. If something starts to go a bit haywire, then you can use commands with your dog to get them to listen. Give them their own space. Since these dogs are dominant, they enjoy having their own space. Ensure that there is plenty of room for each dog to claim as his own, and he will be more willing to live with the other. Consider harnessing at first. While this is not always necessary, some dogs are more aggressive than others. While socializing and training at a young age help, some dogs simply have a bold temperament. If this is the case, then harnessing for the first few visits can be safe. Introduce them in a neutral area. From there, you can give them their own spaces. With patience and practice, everyone can live cohesively. The best thing to do is to make sure both dogs are socialized and, if you can, get both breeds as puppies. Related Posts You May Like:. But what happens when you combine small and sassy with big and tough? And what kind of pet does this mix really make? Because this animal is a mixed breed, the results are highly variable. The puppy could look more like a German Shepherd , a Chihuahua or anywhere in between. And the same can be said for their personality! This is a relatively new mixed breed. But the German Shepherd and Chihuahua have distant origins that may bring insight into what traits these dogs could have after being bred together. The modern German Shepherd breed dates all the way back to a single German dog by the name of Horand von Grafrath. After numerous failed attempts to standardize Shepherd breeds in Germany. Horand was then selectively bred with three other dogs, whose offspring were inbred to preserve desirable and necessary traits within the breed. It is clear that Chihuahuas have origins in Mexico. Genetic testing has revealed that much of the pre-European genes are no longer present due to European colonization. But there is still a great deal of speculation on the true origins of the Chihuahua. Controversy On Crossbred Dogs Crossbreeding dogs can become a touchy topic because there is some controversy around the quality of their offspring. Some believe that a quality dog comes from a pedigree, while others think that crossbreeding is better for the offspring. Purebred dogs typically have limited genes due to a genetic bottleneck created by extensive inbreeding. After all, if you want a dog to have a particular set of traits, you are going to breed very similar dogs together. This can lead to severe health problems typical for the specific breed. Genetic disorders and vulnerabilities become more common. Crossbred dogs are typically much healthier due to hybrid vigor , or heterosis, a much more diverse and less bottlenecked gene pool. Larger than a Chihuahua but smaller than a German Shepherd, this mix can be a small to medium dog. But, of course, other patterns and fur colors are possible too. These dogs will likely have short hair, which sheds lightly. But they could also have slightly longer fur, depending on the coat of their Chihuahua parent. They might have two layers to their coat or one, depending mostly on the Chihuahua parent. Chihuahuas have a soft spot on their heads, like a human baby, that may or may not go away over time. However, due to unpredictable genetics from mixed breeds, a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix temperament can vary widely. At worst, this dog might guard its territory, barking at and attacking anyone and anything nearby. It can be extremely mistrusting with strangers and not very suitable for children. What level of aggression a particular dog has depends on the traits it inherits. Some breeds score higher than average for aggression directed toward humans and dogs e. These dogs can dislocate both their kneecaps and hips easier than others. For this reason, it is always important to keep an eye on them, especially when they are exercising. However, they are still prone to a few health problems, including obesity. The Chihuahua is prone to a disorder known as floating kneecap or patellar luxation. This disorder takes place when the kneecap becomes dislocated. Patellar luxation mainly affects older, smaller dogs. Hip dysplasia is also a concern. German Shepherds are very prone to the latter disease. Ethical breeders should test all German Shepherds before breeding them to ensure that they do not pass on hip problems to their offspring. These dogs are also prone to a few heart problems, including congenital heart defect. This is a severe, genetic disease that puppies are born with. These dogs can live anywhere from nine to 20 years. It just depends on the traits they inherit and if they are prone to any severe diseases. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mixes should not have any extreme grooming requirements. Brushing a few times a week and clipping their nails regularly is all that is required. As a small- to medium-sized dog, a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix is ideal for families living in smaller homes. But it is also vital that they have enough room outside to meet their exercise requirements. German Shepherds make decent family dogs due to their loyalty and territorial tendencies. But they have been known to become hostile to young children. Children have been known to accidentally injuring Chihuahuas due to their size. As a result, this mixed breed can obtain any or all of these qualities. These dogs are not recommended for families with small children. Rescuing a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix Rescuing a dog of this particular breed is mostly a game of luck. Because a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix is generally unsure of strangers, it will take them awhile to warm up to you and your home. Patience is key. Finding a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix Puppy As stated before, finding this particular breed is going to involve a bit of luck. Locating a breeder dedicated to these dogs will be very difficult. It is vital to avoid puppy mills because of unethical breeding standards. Additionally, avoid getting puppies from a pet store because they will most likely have sourced the puppies from a puppy mill. For a complete guide on finding the right puppy for you, see our complete puppy search guide. They can be aggressive toward strangers and can have guarding tendencies. But, with proper socialization and training, they can be taught to accept strangers into their areas. On top of this, you should keep basic puppy care advice in mind. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix Products and Accessories Because these dogs can vary so widely in size, buying products can be complicated. We recommend looking at our guide on Chihuahua toys to get some ideas for your puppy. You should also invest in an excellent leash to make walking less of a chore. Pros and Cons of Getting a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix As stated earlier, mixed breed dogs can inherit any genes from their parents in a random array. This means that they could inherit the best qualities of both parents or the worst. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix dogs can be very aggressive. They are known to guard territory with ferocity, and can generally be hostile animals if not trained or socialized correctly. However, at their best, they can be intelligent, loyal, independent animals that have the sense to serve. If you have small children, we would recommend looking at Labradors or Golden Retrievers. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix Rescues There are no nationally listed rescues dedicated specifically to this mixed breed. However, there are plenty of German Shepherd and Chihuahua rescues all over the U.

I was born and raised in Alberta. I now reside in Southern Alberta. A little bit about my background, first off I am a huge lover of animals! I have devoted much of my time to a local rescue society over the last few years in hopes of making a difference to each and every animal that I have had the privilege of fostering and rehabilitating. I have been a pet owner all of my life. I believe that all animals should be raised in a loving environment and treated with the utmost respect. Because of this deep rooted passion I have always had, it was only natural that when I met my first French Bulldog I fell in love! After learning a bit about that specific breed I took the initiative and decided to further educate myself on all things French Bulldog. I was truly fascinated with their unique personality, unlike any breed I had ever owned prior. With the beginning stages of pursuing our dream of owning and operating our very own business I felt it necessary to educate myself even further in animal behavior. I am currently an animal behaviorist apprentice and am truly loving this aspect of the process. We not only want to be able to offer a reliable service but ensure people that any animal in our care are in good hands. Goals I want to offer a breeding program that will break the stereotype and go against other breeders standards. Especially with the French Bulldog, I aspire to improve known health issues with the breed. My business and morals are held to the highest standards. Im here to show you just that. I want to be able to help people better understand dogs and their behavior. I am here to provide any advice, questions or concerns with your puppies and adult dogs as I continue my force free education with dog training. What Testing we do here at Frenchie Kiss All the health testing we do is to allow us to make better choices in our pairings to try and breed healthier puppies in the future. I use these as a tool to make sure we are only breeding the healthiest dogs. As we know even with the most rigorous testing, we can never guarantee to produce perfect puppies. Our dogs are examined by a veterinary professional and those results are submitted via an application form to OFA. Breeders can share information about their own dogs and research potential breeding mates. Prospective owners can research breeds and common health risks, as well as potential parents, in order to pursue the healthiest offspring possible. OFAS for me requires to go to the vet to get many sets of x-rays. During these x-rays our dogs must be sedated to ensure they are getting the clearest radiographs possible. OFAS can start preliminaries at 1 years old. Before blood-based genetic testing became readily available, one of the main ways to track orthopedic issues in dogs was through x-rays. Instead of just testing individual dogs with owners, the OFA Certification process began building a database. The dog's information, including the breeder, birth location, and family connections, was a part of the database. The program is run exclusively through the University of Missouri, with several connections to vets around the world. Originally, the OFA Certification was established to discover hip dysplasia in dogs and is still a primary source to track any hip issues. Over the years, the expansion of DNA testing has led to several other genetic disease tracking. The OFA Certification also tracks the transmission of various heart diseases, and early discovery can help prevent major problems in the future. Dogs with cystinuria are deficient in a specific protein that is essential for the transport of cystine and other amino acids from urine. Normal kidneys reabsorb cystine so that only small amounts pass into the urine. However, dogs with cystinuria fail to reabsorb cystine, allowing large amounts to pass into the urine. Symptoms of disease include straining to urinate, blood in the urine, frequent urination of small volumes or inability to urinate. Dogs with cystinuria often have recurrent inflammation of the urinary tract and if not treated, urinary stones can cause urinary tract infections, kidney failure and even death. Testing Tips We have delt with stones in one of our own dogs. I recommend if any of these above symptoms arise to not wait to go to your vet. This way you and your vet can come up with a treatment plan. In the case if Cystine stones, we had to neuter our boy. Hyperuricosuria Common Symptoms Hyperuricosuria is an inherited condition of the urinary system affecting several breeds of dog. The SLC2A9 gene codes for a protein that allows the kidneys to transport uric acid from the urine. Dogs with mutations in both copies of the SLC2A9 gene are predisposed to have elevated levels of uric acid in the urine, hence the name hyperuricosuria. Dogs with hyperuricosuria most commonly present with symptoms of recurrent urinary tract inflammation, which include frequent urination, blood in the urine, and straining to urinate. They may also have loss of appetite, lethargy, weakness, vomiting and pain. Multifocal Retinopathy 1 Common Symptoms Multifocal retinopathy 1 is an inherited disorder of the retina affecting several breeds of dog. Affected dogs typically present between 11 and 16 weeks of age with multiple discrete circular areas of retinal detachment with underlying fluid accumulation that are visible on an eye exam performed by a veterinarian. These blister-like lesions are typically found in both eyes and can appear gray, tan, orange or pink and vary in number, size and location. Progression of retinal changes is usually slow and new lesions are not noted after 6 to 12 months of age. Occasionally as affected dogs age, lesions appear to heal and are no longer visible on an eye exam. PRA-crd4 occurs as a result of degeneration of both rod and cone type photoreceptor cells of the retina, which are important for vision in dim and bright light, respectively. Affected dogs can show symptoms of vision loss or have signs of retinal disease on veterinary ophthalmologic exam by 3 years of age. However, age of onset varies significantly in PRA-crd4 affected dogs, and has been reported from 1 to 15 years of age. Hereditary Cataracts Common Symptoms Hereditary cataracts is an inherited eye disease in dogs. Cataracts are opacities in the lens of the eye caused by structural changes in lens proteins. A normal lens allows light to pass through it to the retina in the back of the eye. Light cannot pass through the parts of the lens affected by cataracts and vision becomes blurry. Dogs with Hereditary cataracts most commonly present within a few weeks to months after birth with small cataracts that are visible on a veterinary eye exam. Cataracts from this disease will eventually affect the whole lens in both eyes leading to complete blindness between years of age. Of note, not all forms of cataracts are inherited and environmental factors such as UV damage can also play a role in the severity of disease. Degenerative Myelopathy DM, SOD1A Common Symptoms Affected dogs usually present in adulthood with gradual muscle atrophy and loss of coordination typically beginning in the hind limbs due to degeneration of the nerves. The condition is not typically painful for the dog but will progress until the dog is no longer able to walk. The gait of dogs affected with degenerative myelopathy can be difficult to distinguish from the gait of dogs with hip dysplasia, arthritis of other joints of the hind limbs, or intervertebral disc disease. Late in the progression of disease, dogs may lose fecal and urinary continence and the forelimbs may be affected. Affected dogs may fully lose the ability to walk 6 months to 2 years after the onset of symptoms. Even though this is said we will always test and not breed 2 carriers together ever. Carrier A 'Carrier' result indicates that your dog has inherited one copy of the mutation that has been reported to cause this genetic disease. Your dog may not be clinically affected by this mutation because two copies of the mutation are usually required to cause disease. Based on the mode of genetic inheritance for this particular disease, inheriting one mutant copy of the gene may result in the disease. Dogs with one copy of the mutation may have a milder phenotype as compared to dogs with two copies of this mutation. Based on the mode of genetic inheritance for this particular disease, inheriting one or two mutant copies of the gene may result in the disease. We breed responsibly and pay special attention to minimizing the known hereditary diseases by having all our parent animals health tested by a certified vet. Our Breeds All of our pups are 1st generation crossbreeds. We only breed 1st generation pups due to the puppies consistently displaying an even mix of the two breeds and due to the better health of a 1st generation pup. You can read more about the difference between 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation breeding by clicking here. Cavagroodles previously named Mini Groodles Our unique Cavagroodles are a cross between a Miniature Golden Retriever and a Moyen Poodle — so they have the calmness of the King Charles Cavalier, the playfulness of the Golden Retriever and the non shedding coat and intelligence of the Poodle. Their adult weight will range from 14 — 18 kg and adult height will be range from 35 — 55 cm at the shoulder. They are also not too large — they grow to about 35 — 55 cm high at the shoulder and weight will range from 14 kg. Medium Groodles Our Medium Groodles are not as large as Standard Groodles due to their parentage being a Moyen Poodle and a Golden Retriever — so they grow to around kg and up to around cm high at the shoulder. Standard Groodles range from kg and cm high at the shoulder. Groodles are non shedding dogs well known for their intelligence and affectionate, friendly nature. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook so you can see more photos of our dog family:. What is a Golden Cavalier? As mentioned above, they can also be called a mini or petite Cavalier. This designer breed can trace back its origins to the early s although this mix existed before the turn of the millennium through inadvertent breeding. They can be between 16 and 18 inches tall and weigh between 35 and 45 pounds. He currently weighs 28 lbs. Bad Booney is another Golden Cavalier who is set to reach an eventual weigh of 35 to 45 pounds. Hence their nickname — the mini or petite Golden Retriever. They can have a coat color that can be any variation of fawn, white or yellow. We asked Bad Booney badbooney to describe his appearance. He happens to look a bit more like a Golden Retriever compared to others that may be second-generation, which look a little more like Cavaliers. Cavaliers are usually companion dogs that love to give and receive affection from their pet parents. Here is Milo milothegoldencavalier helped shed some light on the temperament of these designer dogs. I would say the temperament of a Golden Cavalier is very similar to a Golden Retriever. They are about moderate energy level. Now with that being said Milo is going through the puppy phase still, so he does still have that puppy energy and excitement when around others. Given their roots, they are so smart, eager to please, playful, loyal, lovable, and love to snuggle. Do Golden Cavaliers suffer from separation anxiety? Usually it manifests itself in the shape of persistent barking, howling or whining, destructive chewing or digging, and in some extreme cases, defecating or urinating inside the home. Cavaliers appear more inclined to suffer with separation anxiety rather than Golden Retrievers. When we leave, he may cry for a minute, but he is pretty good at self-soothing. He does like to be by my side a lot of the time, but overall does his own thing with the occasional check in. Do Golden Cavalier like to cuddle? Hence, their popularity with nobility and royals throughout the centuries. We asked Boone about whether their Golden Cavalier likes to cuddle. Boone is a professional cuddler. He loves to snuggle up to us as close as possible or snuggle with his stuffed animals in his dog bed. Are Golden Cavalier make great family pets? He jumps and barks and whines at the cat. We are training him everyday! Are Golden Cavalier easy to train? Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are usually eager to please, so they can pick up training quickly provided you start from a young age. Rufus has proven quite easy to train, according to his owners. He is easy to train. His only tough spot is impulse control. He also obsessed over cats. How much exercise do Golden Cavalier need? WagWalking suggest around 60 minutes of exercise a day for a Golden Cavalier. They enjoy a romp in the garden or yard as well as a slower paced daily walk. Rufus is described as a moderate-to-high energy dog. Lots of crazies and sleepies. Are Golden Cavalier hypoallergenic? Do Golden Cavalier shed? Do Golden Cavalier need regular grooming? We try to bathe him once a week since we live in NYC, and he picks up a lot of stuff on his walks. He sheds a bit too, so may be good to invest in a lint roller. When it comes to grooming, Milo is pretty easy and I can do majority of it at home. A lot of this breed maintenance is like any typical dog. We do the regular brushing to get rid of loose hair and make sure it is matt-free, clean his ears for wax or dirt, brush his teeth so they stay nice and pearly white and then make sure to trim his nails. Do Golden Cavaliers have any health problems? However, not all the health issues are known because some of these designer breeds are still in their relative infancy. One health problem to be aware of is hip dysplasia. This is a condition when there is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints. With him being a mixed breed, you sometimes see less of the health issues that purebreds tend to show because of hybrid vigor. Are Golden Cavaliers fussy eaters? Some I heard can be, but I would say Milo is far from being a fussy eater. This boy absolutely loves to eat. He gets so excited when I give him his dog food, I also started to make homemade dog treats and they have been a fan favorite. He will eat anything from the grass on the ground to the dog food he is suppose to eat to any human food that crosses his path! This was the case with Milo. I was fortunate enough and rescued Milo, so my cost was free besides some extra vaccines I had to get him. Are Golden Cavaliers expensive? Do Golden Cavalier make great first-time pets for new owners? I believe Golden Cavaliers make excellent first-time pets for new owners. They are incredibly intelligent dogs and highly trainable. We have had Boone for 3 weeks now, and he was nearly potty trained with the assistance of Fresh Patch in 3 days, and he already knows all of the basic commands sit, stay, down, paw, etc. Given their intelligence and friendly demeanor, I do think they make incredible first-time pets. Plus, they are headturners on walks, so you will meet new pup friends and parents very easily. Lifespan Sociability The Golden Cavalier is a relatively new, specialty breed. Because of their rarity, they tend to be expensive. Golden Cavaliers tend to be affectionate and friendly dogs. This crossbreed is a great choice for moderately active families or people who have enough space for this dog to run around in. They are energetic and playful, so exercise and mental stimulation should be at the top of your list. Early socialization and training are essential for this pup to get along with other pets. They love being around their human companions and will create strong bonds with their families. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was a favorite of royalty. Other, less common names include the Yellow Retriever and the Russian Retriever. The Golden Retriever has a complex origin. Although it has been suggested that this retriever evolved from Russian circus dogs, it is more likely that it was bred from crossings that started with a yellow Flat-coated Retriever and a Tweed Water Spaniel, with Irish Setter, Labrador, and Bloodhound. Owners who want to understand the potential personality traits will need to study the parent breeds for insight. Both the Golden Retriever and the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel have been bred as companion dogs for hundreds of years. Though quite different in size, each breed is well known as affectionate people pleasers. Are Golden Cavaliers Good for Families? They need lots of attention from their human companions and have moderate to low exercise requirements. The adaptable, easy-to-train nature and sweet disposition of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has gained the favor of many royals over the centuries. For over a century, they were the favorite breed of the English monarchy. And as you can imagine, they are a dog that loves to be pampered. Golden Retrievers were bred specifically to excel at assisting their humans in the hunting field, but then be gentle and loyal in the home. While they can be somewhat goofy and sweetly dopey at times, they are actually very intelligent dogs. In fact, Golden Retrievers are the number one breed choice for service dogs to assist the blind, deaf, and disabled. This is a dog that loves to learn how to help its friends and family. Early socialization should lead to a peaceful and harmonious home life with all pets. However, as with any dog that has some hunting instinct in their breeding, you should always supervise interactions with small animals, especially prey animals. Even a gentle dog might enjoy chasing a rabbit once in a while! Things to Know When Owning a Golden Cavalier The decision to add a dog to the family should be well-considered and well-informed. Here are a few things you should know about the Golden Cavalier before you bring a new canine friend home. Golden Cavaliers will do well with plenty of protein and fatty acids like omega-3s. But all dogs are omnivores and need a range of carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, too. While it can be tempting to go for the cheapest kibble, we recommend searching out a high-quality brand—one that contains a range of nutrients and is not just proteins and grains. You can even supplement the standard meals with some fruits and vegetables. Check in with your vet about safe foods and portion sizes. They do best in a rural or suburban home with ample outdoor access. And though Golden Cavaliers are adaptable and medium in size and energy, we do not recommend that they be kept in an apartment unless they have multiple opportunities per day to exercise in a yard or park. They respond well to positive reinforcement and are often very food motivated. The Golden Cavalier does have some hunting instincts from the Spaniel side, so a strong recall should be trained early on. With their eager and obedient nature, they often take well to training on agility courses. Due to their easygoing and gentle nature, the Golden Cavalier makes a spectacularly terrible guard dog. Both the King Charles Spaniel and the Golden Retriever have been specifically bred for their genial personalities, and like its parent breeds, this hybrid is friendly with just about everyone it meets. Daily brushing is recommended to remove dead hair and prevent mats from forming, particularly in the feathered hair around their feet and ears. The Golden Cavalier should have its nails clipped frequently if they do not have ample opportunity to wear them down naturally. Check at least once or twice a month to prevent cracking and foot problems. Interested in adopting? Send an email to andrew goldencavaliers. Click to see more Golden Cavaliers, a Specialty Crossbreed by our family is a labor of love. As a family man, I wanted to leave a legacy, and what better way to do so than by bringing other families together over a beautiful golden cavalier puppy. Data source: Google Australia KW Planner Common Questions to Ask your Dog Breeder There are many ways for you to adopt a puppy, but it is always recommended to buy from a responsible breeder to make sure you get a happy and healthy dog. Here is an important thing to remember: not all purebreds are guaranteed to be in great shape. This is why it is imperative that you ask your prospective breeder a lot of questions. This way, you get to weed out a bad seller. Can I meet the parents? A great way to get an idea of how your desired puppy will likely turn out as an adult dog is by meeting the parents. In such a case, ask your seller what the sire is like. Meeting the dam is enough to know more about your puppy of choice. Interact with her to see if she is calm and well-mannered. How do you go about socialising your puppies? Find out if it is comfortable around other people and animals. Learn how it reacts to new and different sounds, sights, and odours. Have the parents been examined for genetic conditions? Once you have decided on a particular breed, it is suggested that you research the common genetic defects associated with it. If there are health issues about its bloodline that need clarifying, write them down so that you can ask your breeder. A good breeder should be able to tell you every possible disease your chosen puppy may acquire from its parents later on. They should also not be hesitant to disclose if the sire or dam has had any health problems of late. If your seller has nothing to show or seems ignorant about their breed, take it as a sign to walk away. What kind of food can I feed the puppy? It is important that you ask your breeder what food your chosen puppy is used to being fed. This is because you need to keep your dog on the same diet for the next few days once you bring it home. The reason for this is to minimise the risk of your canine experiencing tummy upset. They may even give you a diet sheet that lets you know when to feed your puppy and how much. This means, combining the old food with bits of the new one. Is the puppy up-to-date on its vaccinations? Puppies must be vaccinated and examined before being sold. When meeting with your breeder, ask them what shots your chosen puppy has already received. Find out what other shots need to be administered and when. Most puppies are born with worms, which is why they should be dewormed from the time they are two weeks old. Find out from your breeder if your desired puppy has already been dewormed, and if the process is being done religiously every two weeks. Any good breeder will tell you to follow up with your own vet once you have brought your puppy home. This way, the dog receives its shots at appropriate intervals and reduces its risk of acquiring a life-threatening disease. Do you offer a health guarantee and contract? Ethical breeders offer a health guarantee on their puppies as protection for both them and the buyer. A good contract explains the responsibility of the seller should the dog develop a congenital disease. It also states the terms carefully and in a way that is easy to understand. It is recommended that you get a copy of the contract in advance. Read it thoroughly so that you do not miss anything important. Before signing the contract and picking up your new dog, do not hesitate to ask your breeder to provide you with references from other purchasers. Should your seller ask you for references as well, do not be surprised. Next Quality bloodlines. The soundness and health of our breeding lines is key at Chava Labs. Most of our puppies go on to become family companions, with some going on to become working gun-dogs and assistance dogs. Genetically screened. In addition to that, all Chava Labs have excellent hip and elbow scores. We breed principally for the wonderful Labrador temperament, soundness and type! Our puppies are given the best possible start to life with a premium diet, as well as being raised with adult dogs and children. I had done my research and knew Chava Labs bloodlines and breeding program was exactly what we were looking for. Right from our initial inquiry about their breeding program and adoptive process they showed as much care and diligence in approving us as a forever family as we had put into finding them. They were unapologetically focused on the wellbeing of their pups — it was obvious Labradors are their passion and it shows in the quality of the dogs they breed. I am so glad that I found Chava Labs. Kylie was quick to respond to my initial inquiry and I was thrilled when they told me there was a puppy for me. Along with my gorgeous Harry also known as Chava Darroch , they sent home a puppy pack, full to the brim with toys, goodies and helpful information. It was a fantastic bonus that the puppy also came toilet trained! Hayley Harry's Family We feel absolutely lucky to have found such amazing breeders. They are meticulous and dedicated right down to the smallest of details. Their passion for dogs is evident from the very first conversation. In the days following his arrival, he was quickly so well adjusted and came to us completely toilet trained. He learnt basic commands and walked on a lead with ease. We credit this largely to great breeding, and good early training. Thank you to Chava Labs for giving us such a treasured family member. He has stolen our hearts!

You'll be able to choose what plan you want and you'll be covered for as long as you. Pug dogs can't rely on a thick coat of fur to keep them warm during the winter. Signs your Pug might be cold: shaking, shivering, seems uncomfortable or anxious. If your Pug is hunched over, or stiff with a tucked tail. If your Pug is exhibiting change in behavior and is more vocal. If on a walk your Pug is seeking a place to hide or reluctance to keep walking or tries to turn around to go back home. Pug puppies are usually very energetic though they also sleep a lot , so after an exhausting day of expending all that energy, a real dog bed, nice and comfy will be just what your Pug needs. To minimize back issues an orthopedic bed would be optimal for your dog's back. Car seat - the first experience your puppy will have is the car ride home. Puppy gates - You will need to section off an areas of your home that could pose a danger for your new Pug puppy such as the kitchen. Pugs are very curious by nature and they get into everything. In order to avoid your Pug pup from getting into the kitchen cabinets or the trash it would be helpful to put some boundaries and use baby gates. Not only is it helpful in minimizing dangers it is also beneficial for potty training your Pug puppy by not allowing full range of your home. Bathrooms - can be a very dangerous place for a Pug puppy. In order to avoid your puppy from going into the bathroom unsupervised you would have to make sure to close your bathroom door every single time. A trick that would be helpful is hanging a sign on your door, wall or above the sink reminding you to close the door when you leave the bathroom. Fireplaces - does your home have a fireplace? Make sure you block it off from your Pug pup. Grooming supplies - dog shampoo should be carefully picked for a Pug pup as they often have sensitive skin. Nail clipper and facial anti bacterial wipes for your Pugs' folds and tear stains. Puppy pee pads - if you are planning on house training with dog wee pads you should consider having them ahead of time prior to the puppy coming home. You should find a vet - preferably one that is knowledgeable in the Pug breed and you are comfortable with that lives close by. In case of an emergency you don't want to start looking for a vet and calling everyone, or traveling very far. You need to have your vet already picked and ready to be dedicated to your Pug. Pet insurance - Prior to bringing your Pug dog home is is a good idea to have pet insurance. In this video we'll cover all the puppy proofing tips, best ways to puppy proof your house or apartment, and tons of puppy safety tips. There are some great puppy hacks in this video too. Raising a puppy shouldn't be stressful, so get the best puppy training tips and grab the puppy checklist so you can be fully prepared for your new puppy's arrival. Pug puppies are known for chewing everything around the house, whatever they find they will chew or try to eat it. If puppy proofing your entire house seems like an insurmountable task, create a dog space. You dedicate an area of your house solely for your Pug, preferably one that you and or your family frequent. You can secure this area by using the puppy fence. This not only keeps your puppy in a safe and protected area, it also helps to not overwhelm them. You should go through your home and look for anything that could be hazardous to your new Pug puppy. Electrical cords, choking risks, shoes or anything of the sort should be cleared out. You also have to be conscious of any dangling cords that your Pug could chew, trip over or worse. As soon as you put all of these in place, you are all set and ready to bring the newest family member home. Bringing home your Pug puppy The most efficient way to raise a well-adjusted, well-mannered Pug is to expose them to everyday scenarios and experiences as soon as possible. The first experience your puppy will have is the car ride home. You should make sure the breeder will not feed your puppy right before the car ride home to avoid stomach upset or vomiting. As mentioned above having your Pug puppy secured in a car seat will be the safest option. This is because consistency goes a long way in training a well-behaved all rounded Pug dog. Now that you have gotten home, resist the urge to spoil and over indulge your Pug. You should start training your puppy early and refrain from excessive scolding, use positive reinforcements, and lots of praises. Potty training your Pug puppy takes patience the easiest way is to take your puppy outside every half hour or so and encourage them to go. Bringing them to the same area will help them quickly understand that this is their pee area. Always give them a treat as soon as they pee outside. Continue to do this, and then gradually drop the treats and use only praise. If you are training your Pug to go indoors on pee pads, just do the same as mentioned above. How long do Pug puppies sleep at night? Pug puppies can sleep anywhere from 12 to 18 hours per day, only waking up occasionally for an hour or so every few hours of rest. It is best to develop a nighttime routine. If you wake up your puppy to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, you will develop this habit with your puppy. In adulthood your Pug might wake you up in the middle of the night and you want to avoid developing this habit if possible. It is best to establish a night time house training routine. Take your Pug puppy to the bathroom right before bedtime and immediately upon waking up. Puppy proof the outside of your home and garage Antifreeze taste sweet to your dog however can be lethal. Remove any rat poison or traps around your home. Fence off areas where there could be toxic plants such as wild mushrooms or any water sources like pools. Pugs are not good swimmers and most will sink. Make sure your backyard is safe and secure without any way for your Pug to get out of the fenced area. If needed fix loose fencing or holes prior to your Pug's arrival. Always watch your Pug puppy when going outside since puppies get bored easily. Once they are bored they will get destructive and exhibit bad behaviors such as digging holes throughout your backyard or chew patio furniture etc. Always keep your trash secure, and away from your Pug. Pugs are prone to obesity, watch their weight, give them lots of exercise. Regular check ups with the vet will help them stay healthy. Keep them under supervision at all times, and spend time with them especially in those first few weeks. Leashes There are two types of leashes to have: 1 - Short, soft-handled leash. This is perfect for when you are housebreaking your Pug, as a method to tether your pup to you. The short 4 or 6 foot length keeps your Pug very close, and the soft handle allows you to slip this over your wrist or slip in through your belt loop. For every day use. With this, you are able to adjust the length depending on what the situation. For walks, keep it short. When taking your Pug out to the bathroom, allow more length. Recommended leashes are below. Please note that if you are using a blocker, images may not show. And if you are on a mobile phone, you may need to turn your screen horizontal to see all 4 items in the grouping. A collar puts pressure on the neck; a harness displaces pressure across the stronger chest, shoulders, and back. You may wish to have a collar for ID purposes; if so, be sure it is a break-away collar. Read more about why a harness is best for a Pug or look below for recommended harnesses and a break-away collar. Beds One of the biggest reasons to get your Pug his own bed is to help create the right set up for when your puppy or dog is home alone. Separation anxiety is a very common issue with this breed since there is such a tight bond between Pug and human. A big part of helping a Pug deal with isolation is to offer what will be perceived as a safe den. Dogs that are left to roam full rooms or the entire house often struggle more with loneliness. When a Pug is in a canine playpen see also: Playpens and within that has his own bed, this offers a secure feeling of having a den, which is an innate, basic canine instinct that automatically makes a dog feel safer. In addition, there are other important benefits including proper support ;this is vital for this breed since the Pug is prone to hip and back issues. You'll want beds to be made with quality memory foam. The right bed can also help with breathing problems, as it allows a Pug to position his body and head to keep breathing passages open. Body Care Items General Upkeep There are certain grooming tasks that need to be done regularly on your Pug; if not, all sorts of issues can occur: Wipe the wrinkles - Pugs easily develop yeast infections in their wrinkles if they are not cleaned on a regular basis. We recommend wiping the wrinkles every day with a hypo-allergenic grooming wipe. Paw wax - Apply a paw wax once a week. This will help protect against hot walking surfaces in the summer, slippery frozen surfaces in the winter as well as prevent 'snowballing' which is when snow freezes between a dog's toes, and to keep the paws in good shape. Nose balm - A Pug's nose can get chapped in the winter, or suffer from sun exposure in the summer. A nose balm or butter can protect the nose, and also heal drying, peeling, chapping, or cracking. Body wipes - Grooming wipes for the body allows you a quick way to keep your Pug clean in between baths. If your Pug has allergies to pollen or airborne allergens, wipe your Pug each time he comes back inside. If your Pug tends to have urine splatter up, or tiny bits of feces that stick to the rear end, a canine tushie wipe can help quickly clean that area. Below are our recommended body care items. Medicated Body Care Products There may be times when your Pug has an issue that an over-the-counter medicated product can help with. It is always a good idea to check with the veterinarian if you are not sure of the diagnosis. Wrinkle infections - A wipe with chlorhexidine and ketoconazole can help cure both bacterial and yeast infections. Added aloe helps soothe sensitive skin. Ear infections - For Pugs that are prone to ear infections, the ears should be cleaned monthly, though a vet may recommend weekly. And to help cure ear infections, a liquid or powder ear cleanser can often remedy the issue. If the ears are super-itchy, a solution with hydrocortisone can bring relief. Below are our recommended wrinkle infection wipes, and ear cleansing solutions. Bowls Out of all of the supplies that you obtain for your Pug puppy or dog, you might think that choosing the bowl is one of the easiest tasks. However, not putting thought into this can bring about a host of issues. The wrong bowl can cause a Pug to have trouble eating, show the effects of contact reaction most often manifesting as discoloration to the nose , and even lead to dangerous bloat caused by eating or drinking too fast. The best bowls for a Pug are floor level, stainless steel, slow-feeder dishes, or alternatively, a floor level, stainless steel bowl with an added portion pacer ball. Read more about bowls for Pugs or look below for our top recommendations. Brushes Because Pugs have such thick coats, it's very important to use the right brushes that will reach down through all that fur. There are 3 times you'll be using a different sort of brush: 1 - For baths. The goal during baths is to remove debris, but also to remove accumulated body oils from the skin. Often, a bath brush is needed to reach through the fur to do this. If not, you'll just be skimming the surface of your puppy or dog. The goal with this high-shedding breed is to brush often, reach down to the skin to pull up dead hairs from way down deep, and with a brush hairs will cling to to pull them out of the coat. A grooming mitt is a great choice, since its super easy to use and most Pugs like how it feels. When your Pug is shedding like mad, it'll be time to get serious. For this, a de-shedding tool that is gentle yet completely wipes the coat of loose and dead hairs can save you and your home from becoming a shedding mess. Recommended bathing brushes, mitt, and de-shedding tools are below. Car Seat There are 2 extremely good reasons to have your Pug ride in a car seat, or use a canine safety belt: 1- To save your dog's life. And this is no exaggeration. There are over 16, car accidents every single day in the U. Most regular drivers will be involved in 3 accidents in their lifetime. If an accident occurs and a dog is not restrained, he will be thrown, it's just a matter of with how much force. In an accident at 35 MPH, a Pug that weighs 10 lbs. If the car is going 55 MPH, and a Pug weighs 20 lbs. Most likely. But, when a dog can see out of the windows and his body is secure and not swaying with every turn, acceleration, or deceleration, motion sickness is often prevented. The 1 recommended type of seat is a raised booster seat. A canine safety belt is another option, and while this will help keep a Pug in place to stop swaying, he won't be raised any higher. Note: For either type, the inner harness of the seat or the connector of the safety belt must be connected to a dog's harness , not a collar. This is vital to prevent serious neck injury. Read more about the importance of a car seat for a Pug or see below for recommendations. Cleaning Supplies There are a few things that fall under the category of cleaning supplies that you'll want to consider having: 1. Enzyme cleanser for pee or poo. Urine contains enzymes that will not be removed with regular soap and water. Though humans cannot pick up on these enzyme odors, dogs can. So, if a Pug pees in the house, and it is not cleaned in the right way, enzymes will be sending out a very strong signal that essentially says 'This is the bathroom area! And, not suprisingly, a dog will pee there again. So, an important step in cleaning any accidents, and to help stop territorial marking, is to use the right cleaner. In addition, this sort of product is fantastic with swiping away lingering odors of both urine and bowel movements. Even if you regularly brush your Pug, some hairs are bound to end up on your flooring, your furniture, and especially on your Pug's bed. Hairs get trapped in the weaves of fabric and can be hard to pull up. Poo bags. Most likely, you walk your Pug in an area that expects owners to clean up after their dogs. And if not, doing so is just plain good manners. One method of keeping poo bags with you is to use a nifty holder that clips to the leash. This way, there's nothing extra to carry. Our recommended enzyme cleaners, fur remover tools, and poo bag clip are below. Of course, a dog's fur helps keep him warm, but canines are not invincible; they get chilled just like we do. In fact, intolerance to the cold is one of the top reasons dogs are not exercised enough in the winter. Super-cold days can also interfere with a Pug being cooperative in going outside for bathroom needs. When a dog's core body back, flanks, belly is warm, this can help regulate all-over body temperature. For this reason, a vest or coat during harsh weather conditions can really help. For times that your Pug just needs a little something, a shirt or hoodie is the way to go. Read more about how clothing can help a Pug stay comfortable, or look below for recommendations for clothing that fits Pug puppies and dogs. Dental Care Items Why dental supplies? Far too many dogs suffer the terrible consequences of what happens if oral hygiene is ignored by owners. Yet, when you have just a few of the right items, it takes very little time to take care of this. What can happen: All around the clock, plaque is being produced. It is a very sticky substance that clings to teeth. Within just 3 days it starts to harden into tartar. At that point, it is much more difficult to remove. The plaque and tartar eats away at the enamel of the teeth, clawing its way below the gum line, and causing teeth to rot. This can lead to quite painful dental infections and will eventually cause a dog's teeth to loosen and then fall out. What to do: Chewing on toys helps to some degree; however, this by no means removes all of the plaque. You will want your Pug's vet to perform a yearly dental exam to check for any issues and to do a professional cleaning, if needed. At home, you can do your part by: Brushing your Pug's teeth once per day with a quality toothbrush and an effective paste. Since dogs swallow the paste, be sure to never use human products, and instead opt for a canine brand that has a flavor dogs love like chicken or vanilla. Please note that these do not have a foaming agent since it can cause dogs to choke. Use a spray. For dogs that strongly resist having their teeth brushed, another alternative is to use an effective dental spray. Use a water additive. This does NOT take the place of brushing or using a spray, but is a complementary method to help prevent issues. This is a flavorless supplement that is added to a dog's water and helps kill bacteria both in the bowl and in the mouth. Offer a daily dental treat. These are really fantastic tools to help your Pug's teeth stay clean and strong. Be sure to choose the variety that is right for your particular Pug. The 'Teenies' are for dogs 5 to 15 pounds. The 'Petites' are for dogs 15 to 25 pounds. Below are our recommended dental care items. Flea, Tick, and Mosquito Repellent It is very common for owners to be unsure of what is needed in this regard, or to be unaware of the consequences of not offering protection. These vary quite a bit. For example, Heartguard Plus does not do either of these. However, Revolution works to repel both fleas and American Dog Ticks. So, you will want to check the packaging on the heartworm meds that you are using on your Pug to see what it works for. Fleas are a top concern and even dogs living in very clean homes can easily catch these. Fleas can jump several feet from one dog to another, and also can be found living outside in various places that a dog may be walking through. Just one bite can cause a severe reaction with intense itching. And a full-out flea infestation can really take a toll on a dog. Also, if a dog has fleas, they are in the house as well; they like to burrow deep into carpeting, beds, and furniture. Ticks are a concern in just about every state in the U. While many go dormant in the winter, all it takes is a day or so without any snow, and they can wake up. Mosquitoes are another often overlooked concern. In the summer, dogs can get quite swarmed, and a few bites can cause irritating itching. It's best to steer clear of chemicals when you can. Many dogs have adverse reactions to pesticides and some even have fatal reactions. If your area does not have a severe tick threat, you may find that an all-natural product works very well. Food and Snacks The food that you choose to give to your Pug for both meals and snacks will have a huge effect on your dog; both short term and long term. You'll want to choose all natural, wholesome foods that do NOT contain artificial flavoring, coloring dyes, or synthetic preservatives. While these sorts of things are bad for all dogs, the Pug breed in particular is sensitive to these chemicals. You'll also want to avoid high grain content, corn, and soy, since dogs can be allergic to these. Wheat - but very rarely rice, also is a top concern. Steer clear of by-products and generic meats or oils. When you feed your Pug the right food, he'll look healthy and feel healthy; this has a major effect on how he'll feel each day and his health well into the future. Read more about Pug feeding guidelines that includes timing, common issues, and more, or check out the details regarding which snacks are best for a Pug , or look below for our top 2 recommended kibbles and top 2 treats. Note that the Wellness has two recipes, for puppies and for adults. Once your Pug reaches 1 year old, make the switch to adult food. For treats, choose dry treats for snacks given in between meals, and moist treats for giving rewards. Also please note that if you are using a blocker, images may not show. Fur Loss Help When there is a thinning coat or bald patches, it is vital to have this diagnosed by the veterinarian. Causes can range from severe allergies to mites to hormonal imbalance. Only once the underlying cause has been determined and treated, it may be time to move forward in helping a Pug's coat to grow back in. So, again, these remedies should not be used on a Pug that has not yet been diagnosed. Some of the reasons for hair loss with dogs are quite serious and must be addressed. This all said, there are a few things that can help a Pug grow his coat, if the dog is in good health. For best results, we recommend using all 4 remedies. Lotions - Certain lotions work on two fronts at the same time. The act of massaging lotion into balding areas stimulates blood flow and hair follicles; this alone can prompt some growth. Concurrently, the ingredients in the lotion can work to improve both skin and coat health. We recommend DerMagic rescue lotion see below ; this should be massaged onto the areas 2 times per day for 1 week, then 1 time per day for all following weeks. When used in conjunction with other products such as specialty shampoos see next , fur may fully grow back within 2 to 3 months. Specialty shampoo - A shampoo rich with emollients such as tea tree oil can help boost the benefits of the lotion. DerMagic offers such a shampoo. This can be used every 2 weeks or so; once your Pug is lathered up, leave this on for 10 minutes. Be sure to pat, not rub, when you dry your dog. Melatonin - You will want to consult with the veterinarian before giving this to your Pug, since it can cause some drowsiness, can interfere with some other medications, and should not be given to dogs with certain health conditions including canine diabetes. This OTC medication that is actually a naturally occurring hormone in both people and canines has shown some promising results in treating alopecia in dogs. It can take 2 to 3 months to see results, which is the same time frame as the lotion. Dosing is typically 1 mg per day for dogs under 10 lbs. Omega 3 fatty acid - This essential oil cannot be produced by the body, so dogs must recieve it via their diet. While high-quality dog food will contain omega 3, extra supplementation can help improve skin health and boost fur growth. We recommend a liquid omega 3 fish oil that is derived from wild fish, not farmed fish. Our recommended products to help a Pug's fur grow back in are below. Playpens If there was just one supply item that drastically changed pet ownership, it would be a playpen. It's amazing just how beneficial these are. A majority of problems that owners face can be solved with the right enclosure. And do keep in mind that we are talking about a larger large area in which a Pug has plenty of room to play, sleep, eat, and feel comfortable as opposed to a crate which can be terribly confining. An indoor portable dog pen can help with: Destructive chewing. Toothbrush and dental chews 1. Pug Eggs Although other dog owners may never have heard of this term, but most pug owners are familiar with pug eggs. A pug egg is a plush squeaky egg toy that pugs love to play with. For some reason, pugs love them! Get your pug some pug eggs here. The Fluff Trough The Fluff Trough is a an elevated dog feeder that was especially designed for flat faced breeds. This helps promote better digestion, as well as a more comfortable eating experience. Get your Fluff Trough here. A dog bed — with chin rest! Pugs are experts when it comes to relaxation and sleeping. For some reason, chin rests are very important to pugs. Your hand, an arm rest, a pillow, a coffee table, pretty much any elevated surface will do. Nose Butter Flat faced dogs, like pugs, have sensitive noses. They are far more susceptible to dry noses than dogs with longer snouts. Their coat is very tightly-packed — it holds roughly hairs per square inch! Compare that to a Yorkshire Terrier, who has only to hairs per square inch. Some pugs even have double coats, both an undercoat and topcoat of fur, meaning they shed even more. They make removing fur from clothing, couches and cars a breeze. Get yours here. Pulling a dog on a collar can cause neck injuries, or worse; it can raise the amount of pressure in the eyes, or damage the thyroid gland. Since pugs have sensitive eyes and breathing issues to begin with, this is especially important to avoid. Harnesses provide more control over your pug, discourage pulling and jumping, and are especially great for dogs with respiratory issues and neck injuries, like pugs. Get your pug a great harness that is comfortable, durable and safe. We made a list of the best harnesses for pugs here. Cooling Mat Never had I ever heard of a cooling mat before I got a pug. A cooling mat is a mat with a cool gel interior that is activated when touched. It gets — you guessed it — cool when you apply pressure, and relaxes and soothes your pet. My pug uses his cooling mat in the summer months, and I put it in his travel carrier when we fly or go on a road trip. Get your own cooling mat here. Cooling Vest A cooling vest, like a cooling mat, is great way to keep your pug comfortable during the summer months, and is especially great for a pug on the go. My pug wears his cooling vest on walks, hikes and especially hot days. Cooling vests use shading and evaporative cooling technology to keep your pug from overheating. All you have to do is soak the vest in water, wring it out, and zip it on to your pug. We recommend this Ruffwear Jet Stream Vest. That way you can scrub them clean, and not have to worry about rashes, itching or bumps later. A pet ramp Older pugs can develop issues with mobility or weakened back legs. This ramp is adjustable to many different heights, making it compatible with most of the furniture in your house. The material is thin, so Boogie can feel the ground and feels secure. Boogie is a size small the red ones. Salmon Oil Your pug should have a healthy diet that includes important nutrients like omega fatty acids. Zesty Paws and Grizzly both sell wild caught salmon oil that come in easy to use bottles with hand pumps. No hide rawhide Rawhides give your dog hours of chewing pleasure and entertainment, but they also pose a huge risk. This can cause your dog to choke, or create a blockage. Earth Animal no-hide rawhides are a healthy alternative. Plus, they help maintain healthy teeth and gums, while being nutritious. Your dog will stay busy for hours, but with no added risks. ID Tag While a naked pug is cute, a safe pug is even cuter. Better safe than sorry! We like these simple tags that look good and last forever. Wrinkle paste If you own a pug, then you know that all of those wrinkles and folds can get pretty funky. Boogie used to get frequent yeast infections in his folds before we changed his diet and started using wrinkle paste. The wrinkle paste cleans and protects wrinkles by forming a water repellent barrier that helps keep moisture, fungus and bacteria at bay. We like the Squishface brand , which also sells wrinkle wipes and tear stain paste. Ear cleaning solution Besides wrinkle and fold maintenance, pugs need their ears cleaned regularly too. Have I mentioned that pugs are sensitive? Boogie was plagued with frequent ear infections when we adopted him, and this solution seemed to do the trick. Regular cleanings when we noticed him itching or rubbing his ear helped stop the awful cycle, and saved him a trip to the vet. Avoid this stuffed animal massacre scene and get your pug no-stuffing dog toys. We buy these. Kong Enrichment toys are a great way to keep your pug busy, their mind sharp and their life enjoyable. Our favorites are Kong toys. You can fill them with tasty treats, use them to mentally and physically stimulate your pup, and even bust one out during a training session. Learn about how to stuff your Kong and get over Kong filler ideas. You can get your very own Kong here. The good news is, weekly brushings will help remove loose hair and keep the indoor shedding to a minimum. You can read more about how to deal with a shedding pug here. If you live in colder climates, or are traveling to one, make sure your pug stays snug with a sweater or jacket. I especially like to use them on winter walks. These sweaters are stylish and warm, and they fit round pugs! Check the sizing before ordering. Toothbrush and dental chews Ooph. The dreaded dental. Pugs, like other brachycephalic breeds, have breathing issues. Their flat faces make things like going under anesthesia risky, especially if your pug is overweight or older. Prevent the need for dentals with good oral care. What items are a must for the pug in your household? Share with us in the comments! Pin for later! July 12, Are you thinking of welcoming a pug into your home? To help you prepare for the newest addition to your home, here is your checklist for welcoming a pug into your life. Before you shop for dog supplies , make sure you have everything you need for your pup! Get the essentials Before bringing your pug home, make sure you have all the essentials. Pugs are prone to obesity, so choose a high-quality, balanced diet that meets their nutritional needs. Invest in grooming supplies, like a brush, shampoo, and nail clippers. Lastly, get some toys to keep your pug entertained and mentally stimulated. Learn about their needs, such as grooming requirements, exercise, and joint health issues. Also, consider your lifestyle and whether a pug is the right fit for you. A little research can go a long way in ensuring your dog is happy and healthy in their new home. Find a reputable breeder. Avoid buying from pet stores or online sellers, as these places often source puppies from puppy mills. Instead, look for breeders who prioritize the health and well-being of their pugs. Choose the right time. Can you commit the necessary time and resources to care for a pug? Is your living situation stable? Additionally, consider if you have any significant life changes on the horizon, such as moving or having a baby, as these can significantly impact your ability to care for a pet. Ensuring you have the time and resources to provide a happy, healthy home for your pug is crucial. Prepare your home Before bringing your new pug home, prepare your house accordingly. Pugs are small dogs, but they still need space to move around. Create a designated space for your pug to eat, sleep, and play. Pugs are sensitive to extreme temperatures, so ensure the temperature in your house is comfortable for your pug. Additionally, pugs shed a lot, so invest in a good vacuum cleaner and a lint roller. Keep harmful items out of reach, such as small objects, cleaning supplies, and toxic plants. Socialize your pug Pugs are social creatures, and they thrive on human attention. However, they also need to be socialized with other animals and people from a young age. This will help them develop positive relationships and avoid any behavioral issues in the future. Start socializing your pug as soon as you bring them home. Introduce them to family members, friends, and other pets. Encourage positive interactions by offering treats and praise. If you notice any signs of fear or aggression, seek professional help from a trainer or behaviorist. Taking your pug to puppy classes or playdates can also help them socialize with other dogs. This will teach them how to interact appropriately and build their confidence. Expose them to new experiences and environments to help them adapt and feel comfortable. Your pug will grow into a happy, confident, and well-behaved companion with proper socialization. Train your pug Pugs are intelligent dogs, but they can also be stubborn. Teach them basic commands like sit, stay, and come, as well as proper leash etiquette and house training. Consistency is critical with pugs, so be patient and stay firm in your training methods. Consider enrolling your pug in obedience classes to help with their socialization and training. With a little effort and dedication, your pug can become a well-behaved and obedient companion. Pugs are curious and known for getting into mischief, so take the time to pug-proof your home. Ensure there are no loose wires or cords that your pug can chew on and no toxic plants or chemicals within reach. Keep all medications and small objects out of reach, and secure any doors and windows your pug could escape through. You can ensure your home is a haven for your new pug with a little effort. Conclusion Taking a pug home is a big decision that requires preparation and commitment. Remember, a pug will bring endless joy and companionship, but they also come with responsibilities that require time and effort. Be patient, stay committed, and enjoy the journey with your pug!
We both loved dogs and soon became regular visitors to the Sandylands kennel. Although Gwen was over 50 years old by this time she did not seem old to us because she was so modern in her outlook and had so much energy; she was always doing something and always planning for the future of her kennel. Later, as Gwen became less active and was no longer able to work around the kennel, I took over many of the daily tasks, yet it never occurred for one moment to alter anything. I am very keen to maintain this continuity at Sandylands as it enters its 80 years as a kennel. Gwen is no longer with us and I miss her and her wise advice so very much, but the kennel and the way she ran it continues and this will be the case as long as I have anything to do with it. I cannot begin to explain how much I owe to her. Before she died, Gwen made it clear that she would like Sandylands to continue after her time. The kennels were housed inside the farm buildings with inside and outside runs offering comfortable conditions for the dogs all year round. The fields were all double fenced to allow the dogs free exercise and there was the added benefit of two large ponds for the dogs to swim or play in. A great deal of work has already been done at Greystones primarily for the dogs and we are very pleased to say the dogs seem to love their new home. Once again we have the facilities to keep quite a large kennel of dogs although we aim as always to keep the number down so that each dog can have individual attention. After Gwen's death and during our time at Napton Fields Farm we continued to be successful in the show ring. Sandylands My Guy and his son Sh. Sandylands Gad-About were made up during Gwen's lifetime. Both proved to be important stud dogs with Gad-About producing top winners at home and overseas. For the kennel Gad-About later produced the neat yellow bitch Sh. Goldfinch of Sandylands. Gwen saw Sh. Tapeatom Ginantonic as a puppy before she came to the kennel from Betty Howard, and in the opinion of many respected judges she proved to be as good as any of the top Labradors taken to their title at Sandylands over the years. Ginantonic won a Gundog Group 40 years after Gwen won the group at the very same show. Gad-About's yellow son Sh. Tapeatom Gadding Around at Sandylands took his title very easily whilst the black male Sh. Rockabee Blue Peter Of Sandylands was a little slower to make a champion. Mrs Hopkinson of the Rocheby kennel mated Sh. Rocheby Powder Blue to Gadding Around. Mated to Sh. Rocheby Whisky Mac she produced the yellow brother and sister Sh. Sandylands Wait and See and Sh. Sandylands Wait Awhile. In a later litter by Sh. Rockabee Blue Peter of Sandylands she produced three black champions Sh. Sandylands Pressed for Time, his brother Sh. Sandylands Perfect Chance and his sister Sh. Sandylands Pandora who was owned and handled by my lifetime friend Allan Taylor. Sandylands Tread Softly who gained her title in , shortly before Sh. I am very proud of this unbroken line back through the generations and continue to try to maintain this link with the original dogs. However, from time to time, outside blood has to be introduced into Sandylands which was the case when Mrs Hopkinson kindly let me have Rocheby Purple Shades at Sandylands. Sandylands Tread Softly. It is my intention to integrate these fresh lines into our Sandylands breeding programme so that, hopefully, I can maintain the type and quality in the dogs that has long been associated with Sandylands. I am following the example that Gwen set on a number of occasions over the years, bringing in new blood and then incorporating it into our existing lines. My partnership with Mr and Mrs Anthony was a very happy period and at a time when our lines had converged it enabled me to continue the policies of the kennel and fortunately to continue its success in the show ring. It was Mr and Mrs Anthony who facilitated our move to Napton Fields farm, but it was Mrs Anthony who always came in, took her coat off and sat on the floor waiting for me to bring in a dog or some puppies and I miss her almost as much as I miss Gwen - they were two very wonderful people that I have had the privilege to have known. Good temperament is very important and the kennel has all its adults tested for hip and eyes. In the time since Gwen's death in February , the Sandylands Labradors have been very successful in the show ring and since then to date July have made up 11 Show Champions, won 41 Challenge Certificates, 29 with Best of Breed, 33 Reserve Challenge Certificates, one Gundog Group 1, one Gundog Group 3 and two Gundog Group 4s and at present is the home of 8 Champions. Along with that we have achieved the double at Crufts with litter brother and sister and become very proud owners of the top brood bitch of all time. We are proud of these wins, achieved with 9 different dogs and hope also that Gwen would be proud of the continued success of her kennel. L to R: Sh. Tapeatom Ginantonic at Sandylands, Sh. We specialize in breeding Mini Goldendoodles as well as a few other breeds. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. We live in Dallas, Georgia on our acre horse farm with our three children, Brock, Maddox and Reese; our 2 sweet doodles Chloe and Oakley;, and our 3 horses. My Goal My goal is to produce puppies with exceptional temperaments who are able to thrive in ongoing life settings. Each puppy sleeps in our home, where they are nurtured with love and attention and become part of our family until they depart to yours. Socializing I am known for socializing my puppies for successful home placement. In my extensive research and experience over the years, I have studied different ways of raising and handling the puppies and exposing them to new people, other animals, and different life experiences. I have taken the best of these different methods and combined them to formulate my own training and growth. This produces the best pups for our families needs. This combination gives our puppies a special edge and a strong foundation for transitioning to new environments and allows the pups to put their best paw forward. As a family with three children, we have active helpers in our program. This is monitored by me at all times and helps the puppies, especially the ones moving into a family with children in the home. We start the process of crate and potty training so they have some familiarity with training expectations when they get to their new home. We did not apply or advertise in any form. Just being US…Wow -what an honor! As you can see, many details go into being an ethical breeder and raising our puppies in the right manner. These attributes set us apart from most breeders. bulldog puppies for sale in south carolina - By PetMD Editorial. If your dog normally has a black nose, it turns pink or a darker brown. If your dog has a brown nose, it may turn a lighter shade of brown. What Causes Dog Snow Nose? Sandra Koch, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist and associate professor of dermatology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minnesota. Dog snow nose is most often seen in winter, but it can also occur in summer or even in tropical areas, says Dr. Should Pet Parents Be Concerned? One of the reasons there has been little research done into the condition is that dog snow nose itself is not harmful to your dog and should cause no concern, says Dr. Christine Cain, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology and allergy at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in Philadelphia. However, in some instances, she says, the nose will remain a lighter color. It should be noted, says Dr. If your dog is continuously rubbing his nose, or if the nose has sores, complete changes in pigmentation, changes in texture or moisture, or is crusting, bleeding or itching, then you should discuss these symptoms with your veterinarian. These types of issues can be an indication of something more serious, such as cancer, lupus infection or an immune disease known as vitiligo. Although Dr. Since veterinary science has yet to determine the cause of dog snow nose, there is really nothing that can be done to prevent it, says Dr. Which Dogs Are Affected? Koch, and Dr. Cain says she has even seen it affect some smaller breed dogs. Some pups are born with brown dog noses, which is normal and not the condition known as snow nose. Dog snow nose typically affects the central part of the nose, or the pigment of the flat part of the nose called the nasal planum, says Dr. Menu Why did my dog's nose turn from black to pink? The color of a dog's nose will vary from dog to dog depending on the breed. It can be black, brown, liver, pink, or the same color as its coat. Sometimes a dog's nose can start off one color and change to another as it ages. Puppies are often born with pink noses, which later darken. What does it mean when a dog's nose loses its pigment turning pink or white? The reasons vary. De-pigmentation of the nose is sometimes harmless, but sometimes it is an indication that the dog needs medical attention. Contact your vet if you do not know why your dog's nose has lost its pigment. Some dog's noses change colors from a dark color to pink in cold weather; turning dark once again when the weather gets warmer. Usually when the nose changes color due to the weather it only partially changes pink as seen in the picture above. Snow nose seems to be directly related to the temperature and is harmless to the dog. The culprit is thought to be a breakdown in an enzyme called tyrosinase, which is what makes melanin. Melanin is what gives color, or pigment, to the hair, skin and parts of the eyes. The enzyme is temperature sensitive and gets weaker with age. Old age: A dog's nose may lose its pigment as it ages. Injury: If a dog experiences some kind of trauma such as a scrape or abrasion, the nose can turn pink as it heals. The pigment will usually return after a while. Bacterial infection: The nose may not only lighten in color but may look inflamed, sore, crusty or otherwise unhealthy. You may want to contact a veterinarian if this is the case. Sometimes the dog's nose never does change back. In some dogs it will randomly regain its pigment or change seasonally. Contact allergies contact dermatitis : When a dog is allergic to things its nose comes into direct contact with. The lips are usually also affected. You may have to do some investigative work to figure out what the dog is allergic to. The nose and sometimes the surrounding area may look inflamed, sore, crusty or otherwise unhealthy. Sometimes a dog can be allergic to certain types of plastic. You can rule out an allergy to a plastic food bowl by switching to a stainless steel bowl. Pemphigus, an immune related skin disorder: This condition can cause sores and crusty areas on and around the dog's nose. The condition is treatable and a vet should be seen. Discoid Lupus: Another immune related skin disorder that will also cause sores around and on the dog's nose. The condition can get worse when the dog is exposed to the sun. Vitiligo: An immune disease that effects the skin as it blocks healthy, pigment-carrying cells by attacking them with antibodies. This condition can not only turn a dog's nose pink, but you will usually see loss of pigment on other areas of the body, turning the coat white either in scattered hairs or patches. The disorder can get worse over time turning a once dark dog white. A dog with Vitiligo is usually otherwise healthy as it often only effects the dog's appearance. Idiopathic is a condition that can make a dog's nose, lips and eyelids lose pigment. The cause is unknown. Skin cancer VKH-like syndrome or Uveodermatological syndrome UDS is an autoimmune disease where one's own defense against infection, the T-cells, attack the melanin-forming cells melanocytes in the body. This is the exception rather than the rule and is within the realms of normal, so is not something we need to be concerned about. The Dudley Nose A Dudley dog is one who lacks pigment all over: including their nose, eye rims, and paws. These dogs should have pink noses from birth through to old age. These guys would lack the genes for the pink nose and would not pass it on to their offspring. The Snow Nose Amazingly, some dogs only have a lighter nose during winter. Absolutely, yes! This is best seen when your dog is very wet and their fur parts to show the skin underneath. The most obvious place where this is seen is on the belly, where the fur is thinner. They develop gradually over years. If your dog is bothered by its skin lesions, chewing or licking, there is likely more going on. Potentially, yes. As pink noses lack melanin, they are more prone to sunburn. Due to this, it is sensible to use dog-safe sunscreen during the warmer months. It is also a good idea to keep your dog out of direct sunlight in the summer. This is especially true if they also have pale skin and white fur, as they will be more prone to sun damage. Just as the nose can go from pink to black, this process can reverse too. In much older dogs, we sometimes see a loss of pigment and the nose can lighten. If the nose is unhealthy looking, there may be more going on, such as an autoimmune disease or fungal infection. In some instances, when a dog is not supposed to genetically develop a pink nose, the nose may change color due to a disease process. Autoimmune diseases such as pemphigus and lupus, zinc deficiency, fungal infections, and cancers can all cause the nose to change color. In these instances, we would usually see other signs occurring alongside the color change such as dry and flaky skin, nasal rubbing, and bleeding.
