The factors that will determine the lifespan of your Blue American Bulldog includes: The breed Care The Breed Interestingly, the smaller breeds of Blue American Bulldogs often live longer than the larger versions of this canine. This is strange because this is not the way it is with other animals. The lifespan of larger mammals like elephants is usually longer than that of smaller ones like rats and cats. The reason for this contradiction is attributed to the rate of growth of the larger canines, which is usually rapid. Susceptibility To Diseases It is logical that a Blue American Bulldog that is vulnerable to diseases will not live long. One of the reasons larger ones do not live as long as the smaller breeds is because they usually develop health complications such as bone cancer, kidney disorders, elbow dysplasia , and cherry eye. Care The level of care you give your Blue American Bulldog goes a long way in determining how long your pooch will live. If you want your canine to live long, you will have to pay much attention to the exercise and dietary needs of your pet. You will have to ensure that your pup is also vaccinated to prevent sicknesses. The most important part of taking care of your Blue American Bulldog is to ensure that your canine does not compromise on living a healthy lifestyle. You will be making a huge mistake if you assume that pooches can take care of themselves. The following tips will help you in this regard: Regular Exercise Once you deprive your Blue American Bulldog of regular exercise, you are indirectly sending your pooch to an early grave. Therefore, you have to ensure that your canine does not have a sedentary lifestyle. It is a crucial part of your commitment to take care of your pooch. So, ensure that you do not fail in this aspect. Therefore, using dental water additives is a no-brainer. Just add a few drops into the water bowl for your pooch and you are all set for the day! Your four-legged furry friend does not deserve to be one of the thousands of canines around the world suffering from periodontal conditions. Water additives prevent periodontal conditions, which improve the health and mood of your furry companion. This will help you to be a responsible owner. It will also help you to understand the kind of risk your canine poses when it is around your family members, guests, and strangers. Blue American Bulldogs are only aggressive when necessary. Their powerful look is not for fun. They will get into action when necessary. They do not bark unnecessarily when performing their watchdog duty. They bark to warn intruders to stay away but they will not hesitate to rock the boat for those that ignore their warning. The good news is that it is not challenging to train your Blue American Bulldog. Using positive reinforcement will work well with your pooch. Have treats ready for each training session and reward your pooch accordingly for each successful task it performs. The straight answer to this question is a resounding yes. The tips below will help you in this aspect: Bathing To keep it smelling fresh, it is recommended to bathe your Blue American Bulldog once every 4 to 6 weeks. This pet-tailored shampoo contains natural oatmeal ingredients that help soothe dogs with sensitive skin conditions, giving them a much happier bathing time. Blue American Bulldogs are worth every penny due to the fact that they are challenging to breed and desired by all. So, there is no cause for alarm if you want to buy one despite never owning a dog before. Can Blue American Bulldogs Swim? Blue American Bulldogs are not the best swimmers but they learn to swim if training is provided. The large faces and jaws of these breeds make it challenging for them to keep afloat for a long period. So, be careful when exposing them to water. Like I said earlier, breeders follow kennel club breed standards as much as possible. The standard color of the AKC for this breed is white. This explains why the white American Bulldog is considered the most common among its color varieties. Aside from the solid white, those with colored markings are quite popular as well. In a litter of pups, you will never know exactly what colors you are going to get. Your baby American Bulldogs may come from the same litter but may have different coat colors. Canine genetics is a fairly complex but really interesting topic. I will try to explain this as simply as possible so you too can understand how it works. Genes are in-charge of two things in determining dog coats. First, they control which pigments are produced resulting in the colors of your dogs. Second, they control where these pigments are produced which explains why there are solid-colored, two-toned, brindled, and merle coats. Color genes may also dilute each other resulting in different colors. I mentioned earlier that lilac American Bulldogs are actually black dogs that are diluted twice. Its chocolate gene [bb] dilutes its black color to brown, then its blue [dd] gene further dilutes it to blue. The result is a lilac Bulldog that is grayish with hints of lilac or purple. These dogs can live long when they are healthy and well-taken care of. It has not been proven that coat color affects the health of American Bulldogs. The direct association between these two is yet to be explored. Regardless of what color your American Bulldog is, you should look out for these common health risks: Hip Dysplasia: Hip dysplasia is an orthopedic problem where the thigh bone does not fit the hip joint causing Bulldogs to feel pain and limp. Hypothyroidism: Bulldogs are prone to thyroid problems like hypothyroidism. Aside from health, there are also concerns about the effect of coat color on the temperament of American Bulldogs. While black American Bulldogs may look more intimidating than others, there are no studies that prove how these dogs, or any color for that matter, are more aggressive than other variants. In general, American Bulldogs are playful, sociable, and intelligent. The aggressive reputation brought by their bull-baiting past is a misconception as they are actually great for families and even with kids. Early training and socialization are key to having a well-behaved and obedient American Bulldog companion at home. What coat color they have upon birth will still be the same coat color and pattern until they are fully grown. However, it is not uncommon for their coats to become lighter or darker when they transition into adulthood. It may turn into another hue or shade on a case-to-case basis. After all, no two American Bulldogs are the same. To give you an idea of how an American Bulldog grows from a small pup into a big adult, watch this growing-up video documented by a fur parent. American Bulldog Eye and Nose Colors Aside from its coat, the eyes and nose of the American Bulldog also have color standards set by the two kennel clubs that recognize the breed. Blue, green, or parti colored eyes are disqualified. Eyes that do not match in color are disqualified. The eyes of American Bulldogs are typically black or brown. There may be instances, though, where heterochromia occurs where each eye carries a different color. Kennel clubs consider heterochromia a cosmetic fault. American Bulldog Nose Colors. Their height could be 2 to 3 inches taller than the standard American Bulldog at shoulder height. Save Big On Dog Essentials! Welcome to our pack! Blue American Bulldogs can be taught to swim, but because of their stocky bodies and short snouts, it may be difficult for them to stay afloat for long periods. Providing them with a life vest will solve this problem. American Blue Bulldog living conditions American Bulldogs can adapt to most dwellings provided they are given sufficient exercise. Lack of physical activity will lead to destructive behaviors around the house and could even make them bark excessively. Leaving them alone for too long may lead to separation anxiety and will also result in these unwanted behaviors. Because of their brachycephalic faces, they are also prone to breathing difficulties during extreme temperature changes. This will not only provide their canine companions with some fresh air and sun but also allows their Blue American Bulldog to walk around and exercise. If you also allow your furry friends in your backyard, make sure that it is fully fenced. Some towns or counties may have zoning laws that prohibit physical fences. If you live in one of these towns, a good alternative is to get a wireless dog fence which will also keep your pups safe. Many dog owners will also install an electronic dog door , especially when their fur babies love to head out to the backyard on their own. An automatic doggy door allows your pups to head out and come back in without having the owners open and close the door behind them. So whether you work from home or at the office, your four-legged friends can still enjoy the outdoors during the day. This way, your K9 friends can stay safe indoors at night. American Bulldog Blue grooming and cleaning Only minimal grooming and maintenance are required for this breed because of their short coats. Keeping the folds in their skins free from moisture is necessary to prevent bacterial infections due to excess moisture. They are also known to drool, so wiping their mouths with a towel now and then would be a good idea. If you do need to bathe your Blue American Bulldog, be sure to only use shampoos that are specially designed for dogs. However, we know that it can be a difficult task since many dog owners are busy. Thus, three to four times a week should be fine. Be sure to use a dog toothpaste that contains both an enzymatic formula with a non-foaming agent. Finally, maintaining short nails is essential. If you and your fur babies have had a previous bad experience with a dog clipper, try using a dog nail grinder that features a whisper-quiet motor and a precise diamond bit grinder. Grooming Needs. American Bulldog Traits General Appearance Though they can vary in size and appearance depending on which line or strain they came from, American Bulldogs are typically stocky and well-built. And there have been incidents of American Bulldog aggression toward other pets or people. But you can reduce the risk of such events through early socialization. Experts believe Bulldogs arrived in the United States as early as the 17th century, along with immigrant farmers and ranchers who put them to work as farm guardians protecting livestock , stock dogs herding livestock , and catch dogs catching and holding mature livestock for slaughter. By the late s, the Bulldogs approached extinction. But thanks to breeding programs set up by John D. Johnson and Alan Scott, the American Bulldog survived. There are now two American Bulldog types named after the breeders: the Johnson, also known as the classic or bully type, and the Scott, which is sometimes called the standard or performance type. The American Bulldog Association started in .And a year later, the United Kennel Club recognized the breed in the working class. American Bulldog Care Nutrition American Bulldogs need a high-quality diet formulated for large dogs. To ensure slow and steady growth, they should eat large-breed puppy food for the first 14 months of life. And you should not feed them foods with added calcium until they are eating adult food. Grooming Grooming American Bulldogs is relatively easy. Their coats are fine and glossy, with moderate shedding. That means the breed needs only occasional brushing, and baths can typically wait until they get into something messy. Exercise The American Bulldog is an athletic breed. Otherwise, bone and joint damage are possible. Adult Bulldogs, on the other hand, can enjoy a range of invigorating activities—from jogs, hikes, and tug-a-war games to training exercises. American Bulldogs often struggle when left alone for long periods. The boredom of solitude may drive them to develop a variety of behavior problems—such as chewing or digging. Meeting their needs for physical and mental stimulation can help prevent this. If exposed to good training practices, other dogs, and a variety of people, your American Bulldog will likely grow to be a well-mannered, manageable adult. Specs BarkBox has been delivering dog treats and one-of-a-kind toys to dogs and their owners since .With more than 2. As someone who thrives on spoiling my little rescue pup, Peanut, I wanted to try BarkBox out for her. To review BarkBox, I considered its price point, the quality of the products it provided, and its customization options, especially its assortment of available add-ons. BarkBox is a monthly subscription box packed with goodies for your pup. Every box contains two plush toys and two bags of treats and chews and comes with a percent happiness guarantee. Besides its regular box, BarkBox also offers a Super Chewer subscription , which supplies you with extra-tough toys developed for dogs who chew longer and play harder. Peanut is really gentle with her toys, but when I originally ordered a BarkBox for her, I accidentally ordered the Super Chewer version. I was beyond impressed with this level of care. How Much Is BarkBox? Shipping is extra on all plans. The Super Chewer subscription is a bit pricier than the standard BarkBox since its toys are made of different materials and are built to withstand even the toughest chewers. Again, shipping is extra. Overall, I definitely think a BarkBox subscription is worth the cost. Purchasing individual dog toys and bags of treats can be expensive. Even better, the quality of the products is amazing. BarkBox creates products I trust, so I have peace of mind feeding Peanut the treats and letting her run wild with her new toys every month. Delivery and Packaging While testing BarkBox over the last several months, my order almost always arrived on time. It was delayed only once. I could go into my account and add extra toys or treats to my box at any point before it shipped, and the cost of any additional items I chose was applied only to that box and not to subsequent boxes, too. I appreciate how much attention to detail BarkBox puts into the tags, bags, and directions for every item. Past activities have included lick mat recipes, new ways to play fetch, and more. What Comes in a BarkBox? Peanut constantly reaches for her BarkBox toys over the others in her toy bin , especially the ham and cheese from a Lunchables-inspired toy , and the fish from a fish-and-pelican set. All of the toys typically include a tag with instructions and details, which are especially helpful for the toys you can hide treats inside. Some toys, like a freezable one that Peanut received, also come with guides on how you can make the toy more engaging. The box is a true delight each month, and I always look forward to seeing what the team will come up with next. One box included a pumpkin and honey chew, soft-baked bacon and oatmeal treats, and lamb jerky bars. If you like to always have a selection of new toys and treats on hand, BarkBox gives your pet quality products without a steep price tag. And for anyone whose dog tends to quickly destroy their toys, the Super Chewer box is a phenomenal option that thousands of reviewers agree lives up to the hype. Dog toys and treats are often more affordable with a subscription. The company has a percent happiness guarantee and wants your dog to enjoy every item they receive. BarkBox offers healthy treats produced in the United States and Canada, all made without wheat, corn, soy, or fillers. To get started with BarkBox , I selected a monthly plan and then filled out a brief questionnaire about Pickles, which included providing her weight, sex, and applicable food allergies. Once I filled out the questionnaire, I was able to choose between picking that month's predetermined box theme March was SpongeBob SquarePants or leaving the theme up to the BarkBox gods. I went for the latter, which gave me a thrill, if I do say so myself. According to the BarkBox website, most boxes are shipped out and delivered within five business days, so after I paid, I anxiously waited to see what BarkBox had in store for me and Pickles. BarkBox also offers a Super Chewers box for dogs who require their toys to be a little more indestructible. I was pretty disappointed to discover there was no promotion or discount for first-time customers unless I signed up for a six-month or annual plan—a lot of other pet subscription services at least incentivize new customers with a little perk for customers to subscribe longer. Delivery and Packaging I will say that at first glance, the box was a lot smaller than I anticipated—a lot of the company's promotional photos show overflowing boxes with oodles of toys and treats to gawk at. I could hold the little box in one hand, and I have tiny hands. As someone who has treated herself to multiple human subscription boxes before, I was a little surprised. Maddie Topliff However, the delivery was great. My first BarkBox arrived right on time; I placed my order on March 22 and received it on March 27, right in line with BarkBox's five-business-day estimate that's featured on the company's website. The package was also in good shape upon arrival, and I appreciated the folded top design, which helped set up an exciting reveal more on that later. BarkBox ships deliveries in a standard cardboard box, so no problems with recycling it on my end. And if I had to cash in on BarkBox's percent satisfaction guarantee, I could easily relabel the box and send it back as is. Now to the fun part. Immediately after opening the box, I was greeted with a colorful insert that had the box's theme clearly spelled out, which really set the tone for the rest of the box. You can tell that the BarkBox staff works hard on graphic design, which was a treat to discover. Product Quality As hinted at before, I was a little underwhelmed with the number of products included in my BarkBox, especially for the price that I paid. I'm not a mathematician, but based on products I've bought Pickles in the past, I would estimate I spend less on the same amount of items during a normal shopping trip. When it comes to toy quality, both of the toys that we received—one Statue of Liberty bouncy ball and one soft Chinese takeout box—are tied into the cityscape theme well. In fact, they are two of the cutest dog toys I've ever seen. The Chinese takeout box had little dumplings inside, which almost made it function like a puzzle toy, and the Statue of Liberty bouncy ball had a little crown. But Pickles and I were both a little disappointed that each toy was covered in fabric. I wouldn't consider Pickles to be a Super Chewer, but she still likes to play tug-of-war and tear up toys from time to time. I've been hesitant about giving her the Chinese takeout box to play with, due to its soft exterior and squishy dumplings, and I'm not sure if it would last very long. I was pleased, however, to receive a variety of flavors in the edible items that came in my BarkBox. One bag of treats was savory lamb and cheddar cheese , while the other bag was on the sweeter side oatmeal and berries. The chew was right in the middle pumpkin and honey-flavored. But it should be noted that the treats didn't necessarily tie into the city theme, if that's important to you—no New York pizza slice treats in this box.

They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. While you may find a standard or mini Goldendoodle at your local rescue organization, toy Goldendoodles often require specific breeding standards and can only be acquired from a reputable breeder. Given that a puppy of this breed can grow to be anywhere from 15 to 70 pounds, it is no wonder that they can also be found in a variety of colors. Depending on the parents, the puppies can be tan, white, ream, red, black, tawny, or somewhere in between. A straighter coat can come from the Golden Retriever parent. A curly coat will likely be the most hypoallergenic, as it comes from the Poodle. They are not invincible and can get ill just like any other dog. At Petsmart, she was being groomed last week. We stuck around waiting in the wings as they were finishing up her haircut. It is a 3 to 4 hour event. It was incredible to see the amount of people who would stop by the window, grab their spouse or friend, and point and talk about our dog. Some even were brave and went in to ask about her or to pet her. I bet 30 people stopped and about a half dozen went in in the half hour we watched. It was Walt Disney himself who came up with the moniker of posh Lady's unlikely paramour, crossing out the name "Mutt" in a script and scribbling down, "Tramp". Other names bandied about included Homer, Rags and Bozo, which, harsh. He was also the softy behind the sweet scene of Jim Dear gifting wife Darling with Lady. Having made the hard sell for them to get a family pet , Walt had convinced his bride a Chow Chow was the dog for them. The very next day, the Mouse House founder went out and selected his new furry friend, keeping the purchase under wraps until the holidays. I got a big ribbon on it," Walt recounted of his gift. So, my wife didn't see me bring it in. My niece went over and she said, 'Oh, it says to Lilly from Santy Claus! And my wife said, 'Oh, Walt! You didn't?! She thought I bought her a hat! So, she started to open it and it moved. When she opened it this little chow stuck its head out. And from that time on, that was her baby. During the animation phase, the studio literally went to the dogs, with staffers and even one of the film's voice actors bringing in their pets to serve as inspiration. The pup behind the Tramp, though, was quite special. As the story goes , story artist Erdman Penner spotted the mutt in his neighborhood while driving home one night. Though Penner lost it in the bushes, the stray was eventually tracked down at a shelter, reportedly saved just before it was set to be put down. In a surprise plot twist, the dog was a girl, but they moved forward with using her as inspiration. Quite ahead of their time. Having earned her keep, the months-old puppy was adopted out to Dolly and Owen Pope—the couple in charge of managing the horses at Disneyland—and lived out the rest of her days in luxury. The streets Tramp roamed were modeled after Marceline, Missouri, where Walt spent four years of his childhood living on a farm. Also serving as inspiration for Disneyland's Main Street, the tiny town population is little more than 2, is now home to the Walt Disney Hometown Museum. Several other characters went through name changes: cats Si and Am were first dubbed Nip and Tuck, and their owner, once, a somewhat sinister mother-in-law called Mumsie became Aunt Sarah. Among the roles from that original scrip that went to the birds, so to speak: the family's canary, Trilby, and a neighbor's duck. The flick's most iconic scene was almost left on the cutting room floor with Walt feeling the shared spaghetti moment might be pushing the animals-with-human-emotions boundaries. In a sign of just how far technology has advanced, the original press release for the film touted the use of two million rough and finished drawings by more than Disney artists and animators. The phrase working like a dog comes to mind. She later sued for royalties when she discovered her voice was used on video tapes, technology that didn't exist back in the 50s. The 50s classic is responsible for influencing another beloved Disney film, with Toy Story art director Ralph Eggleston sharing that seeing a movie told entirely from the point of view of the family pets inspired he and Pixar to tell their story from the toys' perspective. Good to know their romance wasn't simply young puppy love. The film was based on the Cosmopolitan magazine story "Happy Dan, the Cynical Dog" by Ward Greene , and tells the story of Lady the pampered Cocker Spaniel as she grows from puppy to adult, deals with changes in her family, and meets and falls in love with Tramp the homeless mutt. Lady and the Tramp was released to theaters on June 22, , to box office success. It was the first animated film to be filmed in the CinemaScope widescreen film process, [3] as well as Disney's first animated film to be distributed by their Buena Vista division. It initially received generally mixed reviews by film critics, but critical reception for the film has been generally positive in modern times. Plot In , in a small town, "Jim Dear" gives his wife "Darling" [a] a cocker spaniel puppy as a Christmas present. The puppy, named Lady, grows up pampered by her doting owners, and befriends her neighbors' dogs Jock a Scottie and Trusty an elderly Bloodhound. Meanwhile, across town, a stray terrier -mix named Tramp feeds on scraps and handouts, and frees his friends Peg the Pekingese and Bull the Bulldog from the local dogcatcher. Fleeing the angry dogcatcher, Tramp finds himself in Lady's neighborhood. He overhears a distraught Lady conversing with Jock and Trusty about her owners' suddenly-distant behavior towards her. When Jock and Trusty deduce this is because Darling is pregnant, Tramp inserts himself into the conversation as the "voice of experience", and warns Lady that "when a baby moves in, a dog moves out". Annoyed, Jock drives him from the yard. Tramp's words cause Lady to fret throughout Darling's pregnancy, but when the baby boy arrives, she is allowed to meet and bond with him, dispelling her fears. Sarah dislikes dogs, and prohibits Lady from seeing the baby; later, the cats destroy the house, and pin the deed on Lady by pretending she injured them. Sarah takes Lady to the pet shop, and has a muzzle put on her; Lady panics and flees into the street, where she is pursued by three savage dogs, until Tramp intervenes to protect her. Tramp takes Lady to the zoo to have the muzzle removed by a beaver ; he then shows Lady his owner-free lifestyle, and they explore the town. The kindly proprietor of Tony's Restaurant gives them a spaghetti dinner to share, before they end the evening with a walk in the park. The next day, Tramp tries to convince Lady to live "footloose and collar free" with him; despite liking Tramp, she decides her duty is to watch over the baby. As Tramp escorts Lady home, he stops to chase some chickens; the dogcatcher pursues them both, but only Lady is caught. At the pound , she meets Peg, Bull, and some other strays, who all know Tramp. They reveal he has had many girlfriends in the past, and claim that females are his weakness. Sarah comes to claim Lady, and chains her in the backyard as punishment for running away. Jock and Trusty propose that Lady should marry and come live with one of them, to escape the abuse, but she gently refuses them. When Tramp arrives to apologize to Lady, she berates him for his many girlfriends and sends him away, too. Afterwards, Lady notices a large rat sneaking into the house through the baby's bedroom window. Her attempts to alert Sarah fail, but Tramp hears her barking, returns, and enters the house himself to save the baby. Lady breaks her chain and follows soon after. Tramp is wounded in the battle with the rat, but manages to kill it behind a curtain. During the struggle, the baby's crib overturns, and he begins to cry; Sarah comes to investigate, and assumes the dogs attacked the baby. Jim Dear and Darling return home to find that Sarah has locked Lady in the cellar and handed Tramp over to the dogcatcher to be euthanized. Disbelieving Sarah's story, Jim Dear frees Lady, who immediately shows them the dead rat. Overhearing the truth, Jock and Trusty pursue the dogcatcher's cart and try to stop it; the horses spook, causing the cart to crash. Later, at Christmastime, Tramp has become an official part of the family, and he and Lady have four little puppies of their own. Jock and a mostly-healed Trusty visit the family; the puppies now provide Trusty a new audience for his old stories, but he has forgotten them, much to his and everyone else's amusement. A Christmas present to Darling from Jim Dear, she quickly becomes the center of their lives, but is then partly displaced by the birth of a human baby who she comes to love devotedly. Her experiences outside the household, and her encounter with Tramp force her to question the nature of her relationship with her humans who she never sees as her owners , and give her a new understanding of the world around her, full of animals and humans, pleasures and dangers. Larry Roberts as Tramp, a mongrel with a mixture of a schnauzer and a terrier , with a knack for dodging dog-catchers. He calls Lady "Pidge", short for Pigeon, which he calls her owing to her naivety. He never refers to himself by name, although most of the film's canine cast refer to him as the Tramp. It is not until the sequel in which any humans call him Tramp, and it is never explained why they "name" him with the very name he was known by on the streets. Tramp had other names in the film, and when asked by Lady about having a family, Tramp states that he has, "One for every day of the week. Point is, none of them have me. The families also had different nationalities such as Irish or German. As he did not belong to a single-family, Tramp implied that it was easier than the baby problems Lady was going through at the time. Thompson also voiced Joe, Tony's assistant chef; Bull, a stray male bulldog from the dog pound who speaks with a Cockney accent; Dachsie, a stray male dachshund at the dog pound who speaks with a German accent; an Irish-accented policeman; and Jim's friend. Bill Baucom as Trusty, a bloodhound who used to track criminals with his Grandpappy, Old Reliable, until he lost his sense of smell. She is a well-meaning busybody of a maiden aunt who adores her Siamese cats but does not believe that dogs should be around babies. She blames both Lady and Tramp for the baby's crib being knocked over, not knowing that they were actually protecting the baby from a vicious rat. However, she sends a box of dog biscuits for Christmas in the final scene of the film in a presumed attempt to make amends for her mistreatment of the two dogs. George Givot as Tony, the owner and chef of Tony's Italian restaurant. He and Joe both have great affection for Tramp. Lee Millar as Jim Dear, the fatherly human figure and Darling's husband. Millar also voiced the Dogcatcher. Peggy Lee as Darling, the motherly human figure and Jim Dear's wife. Lee also voiced Si and Am, Aunt's Sarah's twin Siamese cats with a knack for mischief and never-ending trouble; and Peg, a stray female Pekingese whom Lady meets at the pound along with the other dog inmates she was put in a cage with. The names of Si and Am are a pun on the country of Siam. It is implied that Peg had a relationship with Tramp in the past, through the lyrics of the song she sings He's a Tramp. Peg was formerly from the "Dog and Pony Follies" dog and pony show ; either the show ended or she was left behind. Peg has a Brooklyn Accent. Stan Freberg as the beaver, a clever, hard-working beaver at the zoo who speaks with a lisp. He gnaws off the muzzle that Aunt Sarah had placed upon Lady after Tramp realizes that the muzzle is just what the beaver needs for pulling logs. This character would later serve as the inspiration for Gopher from Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree , down to the speech pattern a whistling sound when he makes the "S" sound. On the 2-Disc Platinum Edition DVD, Stan Freberg demonstrates how it was done and that a whistle was eventually used because it was hard to continue repeating the effect. Alan Reed as Boris, a stray male Borzoi from the dog pound. He speaks with a Russian accent. Thurl Ravenscroft as Al the alligator, an alligator that Tramp asks to remove the muzzle from Lady. However, he instead almost bites Lady's head off. Dallas McKennon as Toughy, a stray male mutt from the dog pound. He speaks with a slight Brooklyn accent, like Peg. McKennon also voiced Pedro, a stray male Chihuahua from the dog pound who speaks with a Mexican accent; a professor, and a laughing hyena. He approached Walt Disney with sketches of Lady. Disney enjoyed the sketches and commissioned Grant to start story development on a new animated feature titled Lady. Lady was to have only one next-door neighbor, a Ralph Bellamy -type canine named Hubert. Hubert was later replaced with Jock and Trusty. Aunt Sarah was the traditional overbearing mother-in-law. In the final film, she is softened to a busybody who, though antagonistic towards Lady and Tramp, is well-meaning she sends a packet of dog biscuits to the dogs at Christmas to apologize for mistreating them. These were changed to highlight Lady's point of view. They were briefly referred to as "Mister" and "Missis" before settling on the names "Jim Dear" and "Darling". To maintain a dog's perspective , Darling and Jim's faces are rarely shown, similar to Tom's various owners in the Tom and Jerry cartoons. The rat was a somewhat comic character in early sketches, but became a great deal more frightening, due to the need to raise dramatic tension. A scene created but then deleted was one in which after Trusty says "Everybody knows, a dog's best friend is his human", Tramp describes a world in which the roles of both dogs and humans are switched; the dogs are the masters and vice versa. Although the spaghetti eating sequence is probably now the best-known scene from the film, Walt Disney was prepared to cut it, thinking that it would not be romantic and that dogs eating spaghetti would look silly. Animator Frank Thomas was against Walt's decision and animated the entire scene himself without any lay-outs. Walt was impressed by Thomas's work and how he romanticized the scene and kept it in. However, she left the studio to become a children's book illustrator in .Claude Coats was then appointed as the key background artist. Coats made models of the interiors of Jim Dear and Darling's house, and shot photos and film at a low perspective as reference to maintain a dog's view. However, due to the growing interest of widescreen film among movie-goers, Disney decided to animate the film in CinemaScope making Lady and the Tramp the first animated feature filmed in the process. Animators had to remember that they had to move their characters across a background instead of the background passing behind them. Upon learning this, Walt issued two versions of the film: one in widescreen, and another in the Academy ratio. This involved gathering the layout artists to restructure key scenes when characters were on the edges of the screen. An episode of Disneyland called "A Story of Dogs" aired before the film's release. At the end of its initial home video release, it was reported to have sold more than three million copies, becoming the best-selling videocassette at the time. The sentimentality is mighty, and the CinemaScope size does not make for any less aware of the thickness of the goo. It also magnifies the animation, so that the flaws and poor foreshortening are more plain. Unfortunately, and surprisingly, the artists' work is below par in this film. Dave Kehr , writing for The Chicago Tribune gave the film four stars. The website's consensus states, "A nostalgic charmer, Lady and the Tramp's token sweetness is mighty but the songs and richly colored animation are technically superb and make for a memorable experience.
