Training Methods to the Madness There are four popular house-training methods utilized by owners: Crate training Constant-supervision Umbilical-cord training. Some people stick to one method, while others use a combination of these different approaches to best suit their lifestyle. Crate Training Crate training works on two genetic principles: the safety of a den and the need to keep it clean. When the pups are old enough, they learn to eliminate outside of their den. Your puppy has these same genetic rules in his brain: the den is a safe place and it needs to be kept clean. Crates utilize these instinctual rules. Therefore, if you put your puppy in the crate, he learns to hold his bladder until you take him to the appropriate spot. The crate is a tool to utilize any time you cannot actively watch your puppy. When your puppy is out, you MUST supervise him at all times. Any time he has an accident in the house, this sets your training back. Some people feel that crate training is cruel. Crates are simply tools. Crate training gives you a break. So go take that bubble bath without fear of an accident! Crate training means no indoor messes to clean up, and no indoor potty smells to trigger repeat performances after being attracted by the scent. When puppies get used to sleeping in their own filth, they lose this natural instinct to keep their crates clean. If crate training is only used to confine your puppy for long periods of time, he may associate it with negative things — such as isolation. Make sure you use the crate in positive ways so your pup associates comfort and good things, such as food, with the crate — not just being left alone. Who Should Use Crate Training? Paper Training Paper training teaches a puppy to go to the bathroom on paper or puppy pads. This allows you to control where your puppy piddles. Begin by putting the puppy in a confined area of the house with tile flooring for easy clean up. Puppies like to eliminate on soft places, so putting paper down gives them this solution. Put paper or puppy pads on all hard surfaces. Your puppy will avoid eliminating on his bed and will use the paper, since it covers all other surfaces. Once he gets the idea, you can slowly begin eliminating the paper, starting with material closest to the bed. Leave a small piece of slightly soiled paper where you want your puppy to continue to eliminate. This utilizes the principle that puppies like to eliminate where they smell their previous offerings. The goal is for your puppy to learn to go only on the paper. If you want to eventually have your puppy eliminate outside, you can then slowly move the paper towards the door, and then put some paper outside. When your puppy goes to the paper inside, you can open the door and let them go on the paper outside. You then slowly take away the inside paper until they are going to the door to use only the outside paper. Cons of Paper Training If your goal is to get your puppy to eliminate outside, paper training can lengthen house training because your dog is taught to go inside the house first and you then have to basically re-train them. You also have a lot of stinky messes to clean up. Who Should Use Paper Training? Paper training gives your puppy room to play, while still allowing him to eliminate without the need for owner intervention. Constant-Supervision Training Constant-supervision training means that you never take your eyes off your puppy. You learn how to identify when you puppy needs to go, and at the first signal of circling or sniffing you scoop up your fur kid and take him to his potty spot in the yard. This training method requires a lot of intense observation and is best suited for only the most vigilant of owners. Pros of Constant-Supervision Training Your pup has a lot more freedom, and you are there for his every action. When you turn your back for a second — and you will — your puppy will sneak off and make a mistake in the house. This method can take longer than crate training. You must have the time to completely devote to your puppy during the housebreaking period, or you will be cleaning up a lot of messes on your carpet. Constant-supervision training may be best if you have plenty of time to devote solely to the new addition. You must also be constantly home during the potty-training period. You still watch your puppy during his every waking moment, but you use a six-foot leash to keep him tethered to you. You then watch for the signals that your puppy needs to go and take him outside. Pros of Umbilical-Cord Training You only need a leash to start the training, and you can also train your puppy to walk on the leash at the same time. Your puppy gets the exposure and socialization that comes with going everywhere with you. Cons of Umbilical-Cord Training You must have your puppy tied to you at all times, which can be difficult. This can be dangerous if they get caught up in something. If you like constant-supervision training, but want the added security of not losing track of your pup, umbilical-cord training may be a better option. Again, you must be able to keep your puppy with you wherever you go during the day. Your puppy is not eliminating in the house to be spiteful. Do NOT personalize this process. At 8 weeks, most puppies cannot last past two hours. At 12 weeks, this time extends to three hours. At 16 weeks, puppies can wait up to four hours between potty breaks. Punishing a puppy when you find the mess is not helpful and damages your relationship. If you find a mess, simply clean it up. Puppies operate on schedules. When you adapt to the same schedule, you can anticipate their needs and set them up for success. Puppies potty after a long nap, after a meal and after a good play session. They will also need to go out first thing in the morning and right before bed. Your puppy will give you signals when they need to go , such as moving away from you, circling, sniffing or squatting. Puppies tend to go back to the same place they have soiled before. If you do have an accident in the house, you must eliminate all traces of the odor to avoid a repeat offender. Reward your puppy for going to the bathroom where you want. If you catch them in the act of making a mess in the wrong place, distract them, and then pick them up to take them to the proper location to finish. With consistency, they begin to make the word association. The best way to house train a puppy for you may be sticking to one plan, or utilizing multiple approaches to achieve a perfectly house-trained pet. She is very good with children of all ages, is generally ok with other large dogs off lead but will pull and bark at them when on lead and currently lives with 6 cats. She loves people and does get very excited and will jump up. She does not like being left alone for too long and will bark and howl. Summer is not getting enough exercise or attention at the moment which is why she is being rehomed, as she is very energetic. Boredom has led her to become a bit of an escape artist. Summer just needs an experienced family that can give her the exercise and socialisation with other dogs she needs. Tigger - Essex This gorgeous little girl was picked up as a stray. She is approximately 8 months old and a little underweight. She has the most super temperament and the kennels staff describe her as being very sweet. She has obviously not been socialised with other dogs which will need some work. Needs an experienced owner to teach her the boundaries and give her the training she needs. A super home wanted for this super little girl who should never have been put in this situation! Rebel - Middlesex Rebel is an 8 year entire male. He would not be rehomed with children and whilst he lived with a Jack Russell, he is not good with other dogs. Rebel currently lives with his elderly female owner and is very protective for her so will bark aggressively at strangers. Rebel has never been off lead and likes playing ball. Being rehomed as his owner cannot exercise him anymore. She is good with children but very excitable so we would rehome her with older children only. Laura is usually fine with other large dogs but does have the occasional fight with the Rottie cross she lives with. She does love happily with a cat. Laura definitely needs some training which she has not had to date and would benefit from an experienced owner to set her boundaries and give her the stimulation a dog of this age needs. Both boys are 2 and neutered. They are good with children of all ages. Neither dogs have been socialised with other dogs outside of their home so this will need some time investment. No cats as they will chase. Rossi and Jed have the most super temperament with people and these big, bouncy boys would fit into a family home who could give them the exercise and training dogs of this age need. They can be rehomed together or separately. Jake - Essex This poor fellow is 9 years and crossed with a lab we believe. He is neutered. Jake was raised on a farm and taken in by his current owner when about 2. He is very friendly with people. He was living with his elderly owner and another dog but his elderly owner has sadly passed away and his friend died a couple of weeks ago. He is unknown with children and other dogs outside of the home. Family members who are caring for him work very long hours and this poor chap just needs a home with some company where he will get the exercise and attention he needs. Jake loves his walks which he will need a lot of to lose that tum and will be a loyal companion in return. Max - Kent Max is a 7 year entire male. He has met children of all ages but due to his nervousness at present we would not rehome him with children. Max can get overexcited when meeting other dogs as he has not been properly socialised but is not aggressive to them. This lovely lad needs a confident and experienced home to re-establish his trust in people and the world, as at present he is too scared to walk further than the end of his road. He bonds better with women and patience is a must. His owner left the marital home and her ex partner is now having to move to a flat where he cannot take Max. Have you got what it takes? Codi - Kent Cody is a 6 year neutered male. This poor lad is very misunderstood. The owners say he is not good with children or other dogs and has reacted badly to them both on occasion when restraining him or touching him unexpectedly. Cody has only ever been walked on lead and has never been properly trained or socialised, therefore it has been a vicious circle of owners being apprehensive and dog reacting. Bhindi -Bucks Bindi is a 5yr old unspayed female who just loves to play ball. Although she lived with two other German Shepherds — her mother and grandmother — she is said not to be good with other dogs. She has no experience of cats or young children but has bonded quickly with a teenage boy who has been looking after her in recent months at the kennels she has been staying at. Bindi has got an underactive thyroid, for which she is on medication, but would probably bond easily with a new owner willing simply to play ball. Sabre - Kent This handsome lad is 6 year entire Sabre. Sabre is not keen on young children the reason he is being rehomed or cats but is good with other dogs and lives happily with 3 others. He can be nervous of strangers so needs a confident and experienced owner to set the boundaries and put him on the right track. Sabre does pull on the lead and will benefit from some training but our volunteer found him eager to learn when taken out. Ben - London Ben is a 5-year-old handsome chap who is not doing very well in his current home. He lives with a very vulnerable family with ill health, hence he thinks he needs to protect them from the world. His owners can't handle his protectiveness which comes across as aggression towards visitors. While it used to be believed that a bitch would only mate on the days she was ovulating we now know, thanks to the help of the tools available to us today, that this is not always the case. Most breeds usually ovulate and are ready to be mated from approximately the fourteenth day of being in heat the first day of the heat period is counted as the first day you see bleeding but I have found with my Goldendoodle girls that they ovulate as early as day .With that in mind, in the early days of my breeding career, before progesterone testing was readily available, if I had used the fourteen-day rule of thumb I may actually have missed my girls ovulating. This means that mating slightly too late does not necessarily mean she will not become pregnant but that she may have a smaller than optimum sized litter. For this reason, we do not allow our bitches to be mated only once — it is important to repeat the mating again 48 hours later meaning a minimum of two matings. If you are taking your girl out to stud, rather than using your own in-house stud, it is particularly important to know when she is ovulating to avoid a wasted journey or wasted mating. Some bitches will stand to be mated slightly before and after ovulating, so allowing the dog to mate her is not indicative of ovulation on its own. I have found this to be especially true of my Goldendoodle girls who always seem keen to mate early in their heat periods. In addition to ovulating early in their cycle, I have also found that my girls give birth earlier than other breeds, generally giving birth on day 61 of their pregnancy rather than day 63 or 64 when my bitches of other breeds delivered their litters. I have found this to be true not only of my own Goldendoodle bitches but also of the bitches that have been brought in to be mated by my stud dogs. There are several ways we can confirm pregnancy in our Goldendoodle bitch starting from day 21 after ovulation. Many breeders also report a clear mucous discharge from the vulva at around this time. From day 28 you can have an ultrasound examination to confirm pregnancy however this is not a reliable way to ascertain litter size and bitches can also reabsorb fetuses even after this point. From roughly the fifth week after mating, however, you should be able to tell just by looking that your girl is indeed pregnant. I always notice that her rib cage looks wider when viewed from above at this stage. You will often find that her appetite increases around this time too. During the last two weeks of gestation, your vet can carry out an x-ray to check the number of pups that your bitch is expecting. This is more accurate at this point as calcification will have occurred and a good radiographer and often an experienced breeder can count the number of skulls and spines seen. Because of this, it is so important to offer plenty of mental and physical activities throughout your home. Once they begin to understand that biting is unacceptable, you can refrain from using their separate play area as often.
