All puppies, not just Goldendoodles, go through a biting stage, but thankfully, it does not last very long. So, what causes the urge to bite and chew on everything in sight, including your poor fingers and toes? While there is likely no pain when the puppy teeth are lost, there is probably a lot of discomfort as the adult teeth push through the surface of the gums. Puppies often seek relief by chewing on anything and everything within reach, including you. Exploring Puppies explore much of the world around them with their mouths. They learn about different tastes, textures, and sizes by putting items in their mouth. They discover which items are fun to chew on slippers — delightful! Puppies naturally learn bite inhibition controlling the intensity of their bites from their littermates and their mother. This is one reason why a puppy should stay with the breeder as long as possible. When a puppy bites too hard while playing with a sibling, the other pup will yelp and stop playing. The puppy quickly learns that the fun ceases when he bites too hard. If he makes the same mistake with his mother, the puppy will receive a firm correction from her, and he will likely not do it again. Seeking Attention Puppies love all types of attention. Some quickly learn that biting leads to attention, even though it is often negative and in the form of discipline. This is called unintentional negative reinforcement. Genetic Makeup Both the Golden Retriever and the Poodle, used to create the beloved Goldendoodle, were bred to be outstanding water dogs, skilled at retrieving waterfowl. This trait is also commonly seen in Goldendoodles, particularly puppies. As is the case with most retrieving breeds, the intense need to chew and carry things in their mouth sometimes equates to excessive mouthiness in young puppies who are still learning what is acceptable and what is not. Providing your Goldendoodle with sufficient daily exercise is a key component in eliminating unwanted behaviors, like biting. How much is recommended? Check out this article. For most puppies, the biting begins to taper off as teething come to an end, usually around 7 — 8 months of age. By this age, almost all of the permanent teeth have erupted, and the chewing, biting, and nipping urges greatly diminish. Goldendoodle puppy teeth can be painful, and puppies tend to explore the world by putting things in their mouths. Goldendoodle puppies usually stop biting when they are months old when their adult teeth have grown. Goldendoodles are bred to retrieve things, and their mouthy tendencies need bite inhibition training. Bite inhibition training should involve the same method that puppies learn with their littermates. It involves a loud squeal, stopping the play, and ignoring the puppy for up to a minute. Play dates with other puppies can also help teach bite inhibition. Giving puppies frozen fruits, teething toys, bully sticks, and engaging them with chew toys can help deter biting related to teething. Having new teeth pushing through your gums is uncomfortable, and chewing on things can help reduce that discomfort. Tasting things is also another way that puppies explore the world. Without hands or opposable thumbs, their mouth is the best way to determine the texture and firmness of an object. Additionally, Goldendoodles are the product of two breeds that were bred to retrieve things from the water. Golden Retrievers and Poodles were both bred to collect birds that hunters had shot. That means a tendency to hold items in their mouth was actually bred into them. Goldendoodles tend to be inherently mouthy, so you will have to teach your puppy to have better bite inhibition reducing how much force they bite down with during play. The younger your puppy was when you brought them home, the more difficulty your Goldendoodle may have with bite inhibition. Teaching Bite Inhibition When left with their littermates long enough, puppies learn that biting a playmate too hard causes the fun to stop. To teach your puppy bite inhibition, you have to do what their littermates would have done. Anything else — yelling, bopping the puppy on the nose, continuing to play — reinforces the biting behavior. So next time your Goldendoodle puppy bites you, think like a puppy yourself. Squeal, stop, and ignore. Play Dates Playing with other puppies is also an excellent way for your Goldendoodle puppy to learn bite inhibition. When they bite another puppy too hard, that puppy will let them know. Make sure all puppies are up to date on their age-appropriate vaccinations before letting them play together. More Ways to Stop Biting Not all biting is related to a lack of bite inhibition. Teething is a significant factor that causes puppies to want to bite and chew on anything possible. Provide plenty of chew toys in different textures and shapes. Teething oil or gel can help soothe sore gums. Play tug of war with your puppy gently. Fill a Puppy Kong with peanut butter, then throw it in the freezer. The cold will soothe their gums while they chew on the rubber, and working on getting out the peanut butter keeps their brain engaged. Give your Goldendoodle bully sticks to chew on while you are around to supervise. Bully sticks are a healthy alternative to dangerous rawhide, but puppies may swallow large pieces if left unsupervised. You need to use different techniques to manage this type of biting compared to teething or play biting. Continue doing whatever it was you were doing before the puppy started to bite you. Continue brushing your puppy while they struggle. Try to get the puppy to bite the brush rather than your hands, but still try to keep brushing. Once your puppy stops fighting and biting, reward them with praise and a treat. If you stop brushing your puppy every time they bite you, your Goldendoodle learns that biting makes bad things stop. Play provides crucial bonding between a Goldendoodle and their people. The goal is to teach them to play nicely, not to discourage playing with you at all. These things are likely to encourage your puppy to bite your hands and feet. Hitting a puppy for playful mouthing can make them bite harder. It can trigger your puppy to play even more aggressively. It can also make your puppy fear you or create real aggression. Avoid all punishments that might hurt or scare your puppy. That encourages your puppy to jump after the hand or foot and resembles play. If your puppy likes to bite your feet when you walk, you can try spraying your feet with a bite-deterrent spray like this one. Eventually, they should learn to turn that urge to bite toward their toys instead of your skin or clothing. Encourage non-contact forms of play like fetch and tug of war. Rough play with your hands tends to entice your puppy to bite. Luckily, though, there are many things you can do to discourage various types of puppy biting. With a little bit of time and consistent training, puppy bites should be a thing of the past by the time your Goldendoodle is 7 to 8 months old. Do Goldendoodles Chew Furniture? Updated: July 3rd, Even the most adorable puppies can sometimes get nippy. Fortunately, there are things you can do to curb this behavior. Puppies are, for the most part, cute and cuddly fur babies that will brighten up your day. However, naughty behavior like biting is not uncommon. Puppies like to play and explore, and sometimes they will use their mouths to do this. When you are on the receiving end of these bites, the cuteness factor can diminish pretty fast. What should I do? Redirection has been our favorite method for stopping a biting puppy but there are many other possible solutions. So read on to find out more. Is your puppy just being naughty, or is there another reason for its biting behavior? A mouthy puppy can be a handful, so figuring out just why your puppy bites is important. Exploring Puppies are not just playful; they are also curious little explorers. This means that they will try to interact with their environments at every opportunity. Unfortunately, puppies tend to use their mouths to explore, which can often lead to biting. When your puppy bites you, he or she may simply be trying to interact with you. They may not know that they are hurting you. This is why training is essential from an early age: to teach your young dog what is acceptable behavior and what is not. Boredom If your puppy is in an environment where there is little mental stimulation, boredom can drive him or her to destructive behavior. Puppies are very playful, and they need to be kept engaged to be happy. Keeping your puppy occupied with toys and playtime can minimize such destructive behavior. Boredom can also make your puppy overdependent on you. A bored puppy will do anything to get your attention, including biting. Your puppy should be able to play independently without your constant attention. Anxiety New experiences and situations can be scary for your adorable pup. A scared puppy can bite in reaction to a perceived threat or to get your attention. Since your puppy is still young, many experiences will be new to them. Some of these new experiences may trigger fear or anxiety. It is important to observe your puppy and understand what situations or circumstances cause them to become nippy. For instance, some puppies may suffer from separation anxiety. This means your puppy may bite you when you leave home or return. This is their way of expressing frustration with being left alone. Anxiety can lead to aggression and other destructive behavior. When your puppy does not feel calm or safe, their anxiety may manifest in biting behavior. Poor Socialization Socialization means introducing your puppy to new experiences. This could be exposure to other pets, people, or outdoor experiences. The more familiar your puppy is with their surroundings, the less likely they are to misbehave. This can breed aggression which will, in turn, manifest in behaviors such as biting and growling. Socialization should be done as early as possible so that your puppy gets used to interacting with people, other pets, and their environment. This will help to build positive interactions and avoid unnecessary aggression. Making a point of introducing your puppy gradually to new situations is the best way of staving off destructive behavior. Your efforts will also have a big impact on how your dog interacts with their environment, even in adulthood. Teething Teething can be an uncomfortable experience for your pooch. To alleviate some of their misery, puppies get the urge to chew on things when they are teething. This may lead to biting behavior. However, in some cases, this behavior will persist. Chew toys are a great way of keeping your puppy comfortable during the teething process. Chew toys are also developmentally appropriate for older dogs, and a great way to occupy a restless pup. Additionally, if this behavior is not stopped early on, your puppy may carry this behavior into adulthood, which can become dangerous. So how do you stop your fur baby from using you as a chew toy? Yelp When your puppy is biting you, they are not intentionally behaving maliciously. In doggie speak, a bite or nip may be their way of playing with you or getting your attention. This means it is your job to let your puppy know that they are hurting you, and that biting is not acceptable. When your puppy bites you, do not push them away playfully or pet them. Yelp, loudly and in a high-pitched tone to communicate clearly that you are in pain. Yelping may not work the first or second time you do it. However, if you repeat it consistently every time your puppy bites, they should soon understand that biting is not acceptable. Be patient and consistent with this, because puppies learn from repeated training. If you combine this reaction with other training methods, you are bound to see positive results. Some puppies find it exciting and continue their mouthy ways. Distract The Puppy Puppies will sometimes bite out of boredom or anxiety. This means that you need to refocus their attention on something else to calm them down. Once your puppy bites you, start by yelping to communicate that you are in pain. Follow this up by offering them a toy or placing them in an area where they can play. Redirection teaches the puppy to play with things other than your feet or hands. This is important because it also teaches the puppy to play independently without having to constantly engage your attention. As with the yelping, be consistent about redirecting your puppy when they start to nip. Puppies learn best when an action is repeated, so redirecting only once will not be productive toward your goal. After redirecting our puppies we do the next step and ignore them and let them play independently until they calm down. Ignore The Puppy Why do puppies continue to bite? Simple: because it works. Every time your puppy bites you, they get your attention. This trains the puppy that biting gets them what they want. Attention reinforces the bad habit, making it even more difficult to eliminate. If you have yelped and tried distraction, but the combined efforts are not working, the next step to try is ignoring your puppy. Quickly turn away from the puppy and face away from them. Cross your arms to conceal your hands. Do not give them any attention until they calm down or walk away. The point of ignoring your puppy when it is acting up is to show them that they will only be rewarded when they are calm. If your puppy calms down, you can turn your attention back to them and pet or praise them for staying calm. If they start acting up again, repeat the step and ignore them until they are calm. Just like with the other training techniques, this step only works if you are consistent. You want your pup to associate bad behavior with being ignored. Resist the urge to give in to those adorable eyes— stay firm and consistent. In the end, good behavior benefits your dog just as much as it benefits you. Keep The Puppy Busy Most mischief, including biting, stems from boredom. A puppy that has nothing to do will undoubtedly find ways of amusing itself. Toys, puzzles, and sufficient playtime are great ways of keeping your puppy occupied. The more your puppy expends their energy, the less likely they are to resort to destructive behavior. Chew toys are especially important when your pup is teething. These toys will help to keep your dog occupied, and will distract them from any discomfort they may be feeling. In some cases, you may want to confine your puppy if they are too nippy. However, this can be counter-productive, as they will only grow more anxious and bored. Do not confine your puppy for extended periods— let them run around and play. This will help to keep them occupied and prevent destructive tendencies. Time Out Time out is a great way to train your puppy. When you remove your puppy from a situation, you remove the trigger for their bad behavior. A puppy crate is a convenient solution for time-outs when your puppy will not stop acting out. We like to redirect our puppy with a chew toy and move them to the crate with the chew toy where they will have a chance to relax. You can also use a tie down to give your puppy some time away from biting your hands and feet. However, do not overuse time-outs, as this may cause your puppy even more anxiety. Put your puppy in time out until they settle down. Once they are calm, remove them and put them back into their normal setting. If you are consistent, your puppy will soon learn that acting out results in a time out. Socialize Your Puppy A big part of being a pet parent is ensuring that your fur baby is at ease in their environment. A puppy that does not know how to interact with their surroundings is more likely to bite. Socialize your puppy by introducing them to new places, people, and other pets. Be sure that your puppy is in a safe environment where they do not feel constantly threatened. An anxious puppy will become aggressive in an attempt to protect itself. Professional Training If you do not have time to train your puppy yourself, a professional dog trainer will come in handy. Do not feel that you have to train your puppy on your own if you are not making any progress. Sometimes an experienced trainer will have insights on how to best deal with problem behavior. However, there are some things you should never do in an attempt to remedy biting behavior. Physical force is not only cruel, but is also ineffective as a training method. This kind of abuse will also create a negative atmosphere for your pup and, in many cases can actually breed more aggressive tendencies. If your puppy tends to bite, never leave it unsupervised around babies or young children. A child may not be able to protect themselves from a biting puppy so keeping them safe is the only option. Make sure your puppy is getting the recommended amount of food each day based on body weight. Never punish your puppy by denying them food. This is an ineffective punishment, but also a cruel one. However, in some cases, biting may point to underlying behavioral issues that could be dangerous. Here are some warning signs to watch out for: Your puppy constantly growls and snaps at small children Your puppy bites hard enough to break the skin Your puppy displays aggression before biting, for instance, sustaining eye contact or stiffening in posture before attacking Your puppy is overly aggressive towards other people or pets These signs of aggression need to be taken seriously and addressed as quickly as possible. Aggressive tendencies that are not curbed at an early age will result in aggression in adulthood, which can be dangerous. Puppies should stop biting around the six-month mark. In most cases, puppies bite to get attention, as a form of play, or when they are teething. With time, most puppies will outgrow the tendency to bite. It is important to train your puppy from an early age to eliminate problem behaviors such as biting. If your puppy is biting you aggressively, it could be due to anxiety, teething discomfort, or boredom. Puppies bite for a variety of reasons, and sometimes they may do so with aggression. In cases where your puppy is feeling threatened, bored, or anxious, they will bite as a way of defending themselves or to get your attention. Teething causes discomfort, and this may also cause puppies to resort to biting as a method of self-soothing. Chew toys will help teething puppies cope with the discomfort and discourage biting. Behavioral training is also crucial to eliminating aggressive tendencies. You can stop a stubborn puppy from biting by using a combination of behavioral training techniques. The first step is to ensure that your puppy knows that biting hurts you and is not acceptable. This is accomplished by yelping loudly every time your puppy bites. In conjunction with yelping, you need to distract your puppy when they get nippy. This will teach them to not play with your hands or other parts of your body. It is also important to not give in to your puppy when they try to get your attention by biting. No, you should not muzzle your puppy as a punishment for biting. Muzzling your puppy may cause injury, and it ultimately does not address the underlying cause of the biting behavior. Behavioral training is more effective when it comes to curbing biting. Remember to avoid using physical force to train your puppy. You can always consult a professional trainer if needed. Yes, in some cases, puppies will bite to show affection. Puppies are naturally playful and they will sometimes try to get your attention by biting. You can discourage biting by using behavioral training. Final Thoughts Being a pet parent is very rewarding. We work on the following commands: Manding which is when the puppy sits to gain attention instead of jumping , grooming, and food guarding. They are exposed to different toys and to different heights and surfaces. Once you get your puppy, they will have already been exposed to necessary things like crates, car rides, baths, and grooming. It's used to make the transition easy and less stressed when they begin life with you. It continues with you. It is crucial to continue training and exposure until 12 weeks of age. Studies show that the biggest window of learning for a dog is between weeks of age and will last a lifetime! May 23, Susanne Shelton We never could have predicted the enthusiasm for our litter box training protocol, and now after years of raising litters with our method, and teaching it to other breeders, we have converted this blog into a fully updated, media rich, course for breeders and fosters. We even designed a detailed, step by step, house training course for those who purchase puppies raised with our Poop School methods. If anyone had told me I could raise a litter of German Shepherd puppies from birth through 10 weeks in my home without going stark raving mad, I would never have believed them! Too big! Too many! Too much poop! Prior to Puppy Culture, we raised puppies inside our home for the first six weeks. Good enough, right? We thought so, and indeed this worked okay for many years. But times, and paradigms, change. While our older model worked well, we missed out on a lot — our puppies AND their new owners. There was so much more we could accomplish if the puppies were inside the house. We could spend our time on more than just poop patrol! We had been doing good, but Puppy Culture showed us how much better we could be doing. I became dedicated to figuring out and perfecting how to teaching my puppies what they needed to know to live inside with us the full nine to ten weeks. With less time spent cleaning messes, I would have the time to really work through the Puppy Culture protocols. If I was going to keep a bunch of little poop machines in my house for weeks on end, I decided they would have to be litter box trained. Litter box training is covered in Puppy Culture, but what worked for me is just a little bit different. As an unexpected bonus, our puppies were significantly easier for their new families to house train. Talk about a win-win! First toilet! On the other side I place a small bed. So, sleep area and toilet area, baby version. What I used: 1 Durawhelp to line the whelping box. I remove the whelping box and put the larger toilet where the whelping box toliet was, along the western wall of our dog room. In front of the new toilet is a slightly larger play area. On the eastern side of the pen I put in a row of small puppy beds during week 4 and small crates week 5. Once the puppies are moving off their bed area to urinate, I add the crates. By now the puppies poop in the toilet most of the time, but they still miss as much as they hit with pee. Part 2: Removed Puppy Pads and added litter boxes with pellets. During week 4 the puppies rarely make it all the way to the toilet to urinate, they are just not mature enough. This tells me the puppies are learning to move away from their bed and play area to potty, which is an important skill. From the moment we move the puppies to the weaning pen, we start to carry each puppy to the litter box immediately after eating. Someone watches them to make sure they actually hit the toilet when they void. During week 4 we are often placing the puppies in the toilet when we know they need to poop. SOME of the puppies will start going to the toilet to poop during this week and by the end of week 5 we hope that most of the poop will be in the toilet. Part 3: Pen expansion, added crates. They are not adults, we are just looking for an effort to reach the toilet to tell us the puppies are learning and trying. Footing: EZ Whelp Pads. Crates: One Vari Kennel, Three 24 x 17 inch wire crates. Doors are removed or front panel folded down. Please take a look at my crate conditioning blog for more info on crates. I have learned that keeping the toilet in the same place speeds toilet training. Now, I always have the toilet on the west wall of their pen, even starting as early as the whelping pen pad, and THAT was really helpful. On previous litters I experimented and moved the toilet around often, that really made it harder for my puppies to have success. My suggestion is that you decide before the litter is born how you will build out from the whelping box, to the weaning pen, to the toddler pen. Plan in advance, so your litter box will stay in the same area the entire time. The now expanded weaning pen, the litter box is in the same position, the play area is larger to meet the needs of our growing puppies. Week .At the end of week 5 we enlarge the weaning pen. The puppies are now using the toilet most but not all of the time and their pen is enlarged to make room for more exercise and passive enrichment. At this point you can also see the door is available left to their puppy patio outside. The crates are still on the wall opposite of the toilet, and our crate conditioning plan is in full force. The pen opens into the kitchen and living room right , and outdoors left. We are still using the three pan toilet for these two weeks. Please note, there are still plenty of pees outside the toilet, but most of the poop is inside the toilet. We continue to ensure the puppies either run to, or are carried to, their litter box after each meal. By this age we are feeding the puppies in their crates, so after each meal the crates are opened and the puppies encourage to their toilet area to void. What I added: Larger 24 x 36 inch crates not visible here. Week For the last two or three weeks the puppies are with us, we expand the weaning pen until it takes up the entire dog room. I found my puppies do not like to touch poop, and will choose to poop outside of the box if they must touch poop to void inside the box. Not a problem during the day when we pick up constantly, but at night the box can get poopy. Our largest litter box area, we use this at night for large litters in weeks 7 and 8. This photo shows the boxes reversed! This largest toilet helps the puppies succeed in getting fully into the box to void, even if there are some poops in it. Puppies are now taken outside for potty breaks as often as possible, through their exterior door and onto their puppy patio outside. They still need and use their litter box however, and there is the occasional accident on the EZ whelp pads. By now we are encouraging the puppies to void outside. They have a doggie door that leads to their puppy patio, so they can go outside often on their own. We found by starting early, creating an environment designed for success, and not expecting perfection we have been able to enjoy having our puppies in the house with us with far LESS work than ever imagined. This has freed up even more time to implement Puppy Cultures core protocols, active enrichment, training, socialization and teaching puppies to be enrichment seekers. We begin litter box training at three weeks old and by the time they are eight weeks old they are little pro's. It is very nice because the puppy has always known that there is a place to hold it and a place to go potty. They never have slept, played or ate in their own 'mess'. We have found that this makes the completed potty training process much easier for them and their new homes. At LillyBits we use a specific method we have developed over the years to raise our puppies. Our potty methods begin at three weeks old and we believe this gives our puppies the best head start possible. We carefully watch each litter to know when to graduate puppies to the next phase. Phase One This is the first phase of the litter box training. This begins when the puppies are three weeks old. By four weeks all the puppies are toddling in and out of the litter box. Instinctually dogs do not want to soil their 'den'. The only area that is not their den is their litter box. The puppies naturally begin using the litter box for their bathroom duties. As you can see this is set up nicely so Momma dog approaches from the side easily. Our Momma's have their own potty place and never soil the area their puppies are being raised. Phase Two This is the second phase of litter box training. We use an exercise pen with a crate and potty box. When we see that our puppies are ready to graduate to phase two this is how our set up looks in the nursery. The space required for this 3 ft by 6 ft but there are many different options for puppy safe playpens. It works very well and many of our LillyBit families replicate this set up in their own home for a smooth transition. All of the supplies needed to set up this 'puppy safe room' are listed in detail on the Shopping List page. Does my puppy come potty trained? I wish I could answer YES! The truth is no, your puppy comes litter box trained, it will still require work from you to complete the potty training process. So we will not go down the primrose path together, instead, we will talk about realistic expectations : What you get is a nice head start and a good foundation to build on. In your 'puppy safe room' setup, if you have done things correctly, your puppy will use the litter box. I can not stress enough the importance of getting the right equipment to begin with. Your puppy will not be ready for unsupervised freedom in the house. Your LillyBit will not be like an adult cat that you can show where the litter box is and then they will go find it every time they have to go. You will need to supervise your puppy and when you see signs they have to go potty prompt them to use their litter box. Some signs a puppy has to go potty is turning circles, disappearing behind something and sniffing. If you are holding a puppy and they have to go potty, often they get squirmy. It is good to use a command word when you are prompting your puppy to go potty. I use "good potty" with an affectionate rub. Sometimes your puppy will be so busy they don't want to take the time to go potty and you will need to insist and keep prompting them with 'good potty' and putting them back in the box until they use it. With my little guy Griffin sometimes it would take 10 tries! If they don't go, you can use your crate to put them in and wait 10 minutes and try again. You can expect your puppy to have to use the bathroom after a nap, playing, eating or drinking. I would wait until you see your little one use the litter box in their 'puppy safe room' and then bring them out for their playtime directly after. In the beginning the key to successful housebreaking is supervise, supervise and more supervision! Really, in the beginning we are the ones that are potty trained! At night we suggest using a crate for your puppy to sleep in. For the first few nights be prepared to wake up early and let the little one out to relieve themselves in their litter box.
