Everyone wanted one and I will not lie, I too considered getting one of these adorable little buddies. So what is it about them that makes them so unique? A white pug can obtain this coloring in one of three main ways. The first is leucism, where the melanin production is lower than normal. The second is albinism, where there is no melanin produced at all. Finally, it could be due to mixed breeding with breeds that have white coloring genes, in which case it is technically not a pure pug. In the sections below, we shall take a look at the difference between the two main causes of white coloring in pugs which are albinism and leucism. That way if you decide to get one you know exactly what to expect. However, they are fundamentally different in terms of everything from the cause to the manifestation. Albinism In Pugs Albinism in pugs is a result of genetic mutation in the genes responsible for producing melanin. The result is an albino pug with an absolute lack of melanin. This covers everything from the fur and eyes to blood vessels. With albinism, the fur on the pug will be completely white in color but maintains the other coat features of the parent. Other surfaces like the paw pads, nose, and rim around the eyes take on more of a pale pink hue. Finally, the lack of pigmentation results in blue or even translucent eyes. This trait is recessive in nature. This means that both parents need to either be albinos or carriers of the gene for it to manifest in the pug. For this reason, albino pugs are incredibly rare. Leucism In Pugs A leucistic pug on the other hand gets its white coloring from a different genetic mutation affecting pigmentation. This affects melanin formation at a DNA level. Unlike albinism which causes total lack of pigmentation, a leucistic pug will have melanin on their irises, paw pads, noses, and even blood vessels. They will appear a darker shade of blue or even brown for the eyes and dark pink for the rest of the surfaces. However, the fur, much like in albinism, is completely lacking in melanin and results in white coloring all over the body from the root to the shaft. Are White Pugs Healthy? Image from Instagram: paula. If it is as a result of leucism, then the pug will only have the regular health issues that other pugs suffer. However, if the white fur is due to albinism, there are some issues associated with the total lack of melanin. Let us take a closer look at all of these. It is unfortunately incurable with most affected doggies having to be put down. Stenotic Nares This is a condition characterized by blockage of nasal airways. It is a result of the brachycephalic facial structure that the dog has and often results in major difficulties breathing. Obesity Pugs have a really big appetite. They are also extremely lazy. This is not a good combination and if you do not watch what you feed the doggie, they may end up being obese. Allergies Pugs are prone to a number of allergies. These include allergic dermatitis from things like dust mites, pollen, and even grass. They also often suffer from food allergies ranging from gluten intolerance to meat allergies. It is, therefore, best to minimize outdoor time with albino pugs. Skin Cancer White dogs are generally at a greater risk of developing skin cancer but none are as vulnerable as those with albinism. As with sunburns, one of the best ways to protect your white pug is by minimizing their exposure by any means necessary. Pugs in general need a lot of tender loving care. However, with their additional special needs it is safe to say that white pugs need a little extra attention and effort. Here are 4 key ways you could give your pretty pooch a happy home and a chance to live out their life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. Minimize Direct Sun Exposure As earlier stated, white pugs are prone to a lot of sun-related issues from skin cancer to photophobia. Part of raising one of these beauties is keeping them out of the sun as much as possible. And if you must go out in them, invest in doggy clothes that offer some degree of protection through coverage. Invest In Regular Pet Visits A lot of the terminal health issues faced by white pugs may be dealt with better if they are caught early. Therefore, find and stick to a vet visit schedule so you do not find out something important when it is too late. Feed The Doggy The Right Food White pugs are very likely to become overweight so what and how much you feed them is very important. For the former, we recommend the Pet Plate fresh food subscription service. Find Fun, But Simple Exercises White pugs not only do not like to exercise but are also put at risk whenever they go out. It is therefore up to you to find fun ways to keep them physically and mentally stimulated for their own sake. Do White Pugs Shed? Grooming Tips for Leucistic Vs Albino Pugs There is a common misconception about white pugs that paints them as heavier shedders than regular pugs. This is simply not the case. What happens is that their fur, being light-colored and medium length, is easier to spot on surfaces. There is also no difference between shedding patterns for leucistic and albino pugs as long as the coat is healthy. However, there is no denying the fact that white pugs, like any other pug, do shed. You will therefore have to go out of your way to minimize this. In this case, brushing is the most important grooming habit. This helps by deshedding the already loose fur and therefore prevents it from falling off all over your home. Another crucial grooming practice when raising a white pug is regular washing. Due to their white fur, they tend to show dirt and grime very easily. However, this does not mean you wash them too often as their skin and fur need the natural oils on them for protection. It is, therefore, best to simply go with a one to two monthly washing schedule. In the meantime, you could use doggy wipes to get rid of any stains or messes on their fur. Temperament Of White Pugs Image from Instagram: matildaemilyheidi3pugs There are subtle differences between the temperament of a regular pug and a white one but they are very similar for the most part. For some perspective, here are the most important personality traits you may encounter. Strong-Willed This is just a really nice way of saying that white pugs are stubborn. If they are not trained early, they have very little inclination towards obedience and just love getting into mischief. Clingy White pugs have what is affectionately referred to as Velcro personalities. They will identify a member of the family and form what can only be described as an obsessive bond. Eager To Please This is particularly the case when they are younger and it definitely makes life a lot easier when it comes to training. You just need an effective way to show your approval. Clever White pugs are also very smart dogs. They are also very intuitively caring which makes them ideal for families with children. Playful These doggies are predominantly calm and just like to either sleep or sit back and watch the world go by. However, they have a silly and playful side that is very fun to watch. Lazy White pugs love nothing more than sleeping and relaxing in general. They only ever get bursts of energy for exercise when they are in their playful moods. Even Tempered They are very docile and hardly ever cause trouble whether it is with another dog, a child, or even strangers in your home. If your pug is white due to albinism, you also have to factor in special care needs and additional health bills that come with the mutation. How Much Are Albino Pugs? Typically, it depends on where you get the pug. If you go for shelter adoptions, you may not have to pay as much. The problem is that this is a game of chance and you might not get an albino pug very easily. Do Pugs Have Blue Eyes? A pug can have blue eyes as a result of low levels of melanin. This makes them more prone to issues like photophobia due to inadequate protection of inner eye structures from UV rays from the sun. These lovable pups are wildly popular and the perfect match for many families. They come in a wide variety of colors and coats, including all white—which is relatively rare. Here are just a few white Pugs whose humans share their lives on Instagram. Sometimes, he gets both! Sugar Sugar is a five-year-old white Pug who has an all-black Pug sister named Pepper! Why the Controversy? White Pugs are usually the result of a genetic mutation, but some breeders have attempted to produce white Pugs through selectively breeding dogs with genetic predispositions for albinism and leucism. Albinism is an inherited disorder that affects melanin production. Pugs with albinism produce zero melanin, and will have fully white fur, pale pink skin, and pale pinkish eyes. Leucism reduces but does not fully eliminate melanin production, and leucistic Pugs will typically have white or cream fur and light blue or brown eyes. Albinism and in some cases, leucism can cause vision impairments and blindness, sun sensitivity, and increased susceptibility to certain cancers. When breeders pair dogs that carry the genetic markers for albinism, they risk producing puppies with serious health issues and special needs that require additional care both financially and physically from their families. The controversy is based purely on the fact that it is unethical to purposefully produce dogs that are likely to have physical disabilities and health risks. Breeders eager to make profits prey on unsuspecting dog lovers and use the power of scarcity and exoticism to sell white Pugs. Unfortunately, many of these pugs find themselves in homes that are not prepared to support their special needs, putting them at risk of abandonment and neglect. White Pug Basic Info White Pugs are purebred Pugs displaying a specific phenotype of a genetic mutation, and will share all the same general characteristics of typical fawn and black Pugs. Here are some of the basics about this breed. In truth, white Pugs are typically albino or leucistic, though some may be mixed breed dogs whose parentage includes breeds known to typically have white coats. But as the breed was bred, these were seen as desirable characteristics and so they were brought forward to what the modern day Pug looks like. White Pugs can be bred, and their coloration is always a genetic mutation. White purebred Pugs are always albino or leucistic, and there is no evidence to suggest that any reputable breeders have managed to produce white Pugs without the albino or leucistic gene. Pugs are outgoing, goofy, stubborn, and sensitive. White Pugs, who are prone to vision problems may have additional needs due to their special needs. White Pug Size Purebred Pugs are typically inches tall, and should weigh between pounds. White Pug Health Pugs are brachycephalic, meaning they have short, squashed faces. The squashed-face look is a purposeful aesthetic choice developed over decades of careful selective breeding. Conclusion Origin and Physical Appearance The white-colored pug is a result of selective breeding. The American Kennel Club mentions only two varieties that is black and fawn and does not certify white one, as it is crossbred. These are often confused with the albino pug due to their coat color. These have a pure white coat with a dark muzzle on their neck. Breeders tend to charge more for designer dogs and continue to crossbreed due to their demand because it is a distinct color not possessed by all. Rarity These are extremely rare, and I am sure you must have spotted one in pictures only if you have ever seen them. A Controversial Breed? Yes, you heard it right. This is a controversial breed due to its origin. Interesting Fact There is a famous white pug, named Marshmallow, you can find him all over the internet. It looks so adorable and angelic that I am sure you will be mesmerized just by one look. Conclusion Despite being a controversial variety, these are still in demand, so breeders continue breeding. Post navigation. Keeping their coats clean White Pug Genetics There are a small handful of special genetic recipes which can cause dogs to have white coats. One is the white spotting series of genes. The white spotting genes cause patches of white — which can be small, or so large they cover the entire body. None of the white spotting genes naturally occur in the Pug breed. But they can be introduced by outcrossing with other breeds. Another gene which causes white fur is the recessive gene for albinism. Different genes cause albinism in different breeds. The gene which causes albinism in Pugs is recessive. White Pug Temperament The temperament of a white coated Pug will depend upon how they came to be white. A purebred Pug with a very pale fawn coat is likely to be the closest match to these qualities. However, breeding for color can have pitfalls. Prioritising color over temperament means that character flaws might be passed on, as a trade off for achieving a paler coat. For example, a breeder might overlook a history of severe separation anxiety. What About Albinos and Mixes? A purebred albino Pug should, in theory, also have a very typically Pug-like personality. Finally, Pug-mix dogs with white spotting genes will have a personality that combines elements of the Pug, and other dogs in their family tree. White Pug Health Sadly, the Pug breed is notable for its overall poor health. A white Pug will share these issues. In the region of two thirds have painful hip deformities caused by either hip dysplasia or Legg-Perthes disease. About two thirds of Pugs also suffer from elbow dysplasia. The extreme flattening of their face puts them at high risk of breathing difficulties and damage to their corneas. Their screw tail is linked to spinal deformities and spina bifida type diseases. Further complications of being white If a breeder prioritises choosing a sire and dam by their colors, and compromises on their health in order to achieve light colored puppies, then the overall health of the puppies can decline even further. Albinism, meanwhile, is linked to increased light sensitivity, and higher risk of skin cancer. Which can make them partially or completely blind. This can have a knock-on effect on their temperament, which might be more cautious or easily startled. The health of Pug crosses will depend on both the overall health of their Pug parent, and the health of their other ancestors. For example, creating white dogs by deliberately introducing the Extreme White gene from the white spotting series is linked to increased hereditary deafness and hearing loss too. However, crossing Pugs with dogs breeds that have a healthier body structure may also result in a puppy which is healthier overall than a purebred Pug. White Pug Grooming All Pugs need careful daily attention to their grooming , and the palest colored Pugs even more so. Pugs are very prone to trouble with their anal glands. So to avoid leakages, or explosive squirting of anal fluids when you least expect it, you may need to pay your vet to empty them every few weeks. Or learn how to do it yourself. The wrinkles on their faces create warm, humid creases which are an ideal breeding ground for fungal and bacterial infections. So they need to be gently cleaned every day. In white Pugs this makes their face more prone to tear staining as well. Tear stains are reddish brown marks around the eyes caused by porphyrin in the tears. Your White Pug White Pugs are an unusual color that falls outside of the breed standard. Sadly, due to the many health problems affecting Pugs, which seriously compromise their welfare, we cannot recommend them as pets. When white Pugs are created by selective breeding for pale fawn coats, these health problems are likely to be made even worse. Albino Pugs have extra health problems caused by their albinism. White Pugs created by crossing with other breeds may not have the same temperament as purebred Pugs. But they are the most likely to be healthier. About the Pug Pugs are small dogs that grow up to around 13 inches tall. As adults, they will usually weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. Pugs are friendly, affectionate, and loyal. These small dogs have always been popular lap dogs, with modern celebrities and 18th Century royalty alike. But, back then, Pugs were quite different! Pug ancestors had much longer muzzles than their modern counterparts. This shortened face shape has been achieved through generations of breeding for a certain appearance. We will look more at this later on. These are black and fawn. Black Pugs are black all over. They will have no other markings. But fawn Pugs have black markings. This includes a mask on their face and black ears. Any color other than fawn or black is disqualified from dog shows by the AKC. Which brings us to the white Pug. What is a White Pug? White fur color is not an accepted color by AKC. Pugs with white fur could have white fur all over. Or, they could have the same dark face mask as fawn Pugs. Some breeders will purposely breed pale fawn Pugs to create light colored, or white, Pug puppies. But, this striking fur color can also occur in albino Pugs. You might find white mixed breed Pug puppies, but their temperament and looks may differ from the traditional Pug. Read on to take a closer look at each of these variations of the white Pug. Purebred White Pug Many people like to choose purebred dogs because their appearances and temperaments are predictable. Breed standards have been developed over generations of dogs to achieve this. Some breeders try to introduce the white fur color into their Pugs by breeding pale fawn dogs together. This means that the resulting puppies are still purebred. So, they are likely to have the same temperament, general looks, and health issues as any other Pug. However, there is a danger here to be aware of. Disreputable breeders may attempt to get this coat color regardless of the health of the Pugs they are breeding from. Even if this means getting a slightly darker shade. Fur can also get darker as your dog gets older. So very pale puppies may end up more yellow or fawn-colored as they age. Albino Pug Pugs that suffer from albinism will have white coats. Albinism is characterized by a complete lack of pigment. White Pugs that are albino will often have pale eyes and pink noses. They will not have any black coloring on their faces. Some people might think this looks cute, but albino Pugs have additional needs that you should consider before bringing this dog home. Albino Health Pugs with albinism can suffer from problems relating to their eyes. This includes blindness, vision impairment, and small eyes. Albino Pug eyes can be more sensitive to sunlight. So be careful taking an albino dog out on bright days. Thanks to this lack of pigment, albino Pugs may also have more sensitive skin. Albino white Pugs can easily be sunburnt. This also puts them at a higher risk of cancer and tumors. Breeding a Pug with another dog can introduce a new variety of colors into their genes. But they also might not have other qualities associated with a normal Pug, such as their small appearance or their friendly temperament. Choosing a mixed breed with a longer snout can help to avoid issues associated with flat faces in Pugs. But, again, not all Pug mixes will have longer snouts. So, you may find a mixed breed white Pug or black and white Pug. So for now, we will look at the health concerns of the Pug breed. Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome is the collective term for a number of breathing problems in Pugs. These problems are all associated with the flat face that has been bred into these dogs. This means Pugs often experience a shortness of breath. They can also struggle to exercise, or overheat easily if they exercise too much or in hot weather. They are prone to heat stroke, which can result in death in extreme cases. For dogs who are really suffering, surgery may be the only option. Dental Issues Pugs have been bred to have substantially shorter muzzles than they used to. But, they still have the same number of teeth. So, Pugs are likely to experience very overcrowded teeth. Eye Problems Brachycephalic dogs have flatter skulls, which results in larger appearing eyes. However, their eye sockets are just more shallow, meaning their eyes are more likely to bulge out. Protruding Pug eyes are more vulnerable to scratches and damage. Bulging eyes also make it harder for your dog to close his eyelids, which can result in ulcers and infections. These problems and more are collected under the term Brachycephalic Ocular Syndrome. Screw Tails and Hemivertebrae Pugs have screw tails, which are linked to hemivertebrae — malformed bones in the spine. This puts pressure on the nerves in their spinal cord, causing pain, paralysis and incompetence. Other Pug Problems The above problems are linked to facial conformation, so cannot be tested for in Pugs. All Pugs are likely to suffer from these issues to some extent. But, there are some other health issues that can be tested for. These are: Hip dysplasia Legg-calve-perthes disease Slipping kneecaps Make sure to see any possible health certificates when choosing a puppy from a reputable breeder. Prices may vary depending on if the pups are meant for shows, or where you are in the country. So what about the white Pug price? Because white Pugs are harder to come by than your regular black or fawn Pugs, you might find some breeders inflating their prices massively. This can result in unhealthy puppies being sold under the ruse of being as healthy as possible, at a much higher cost to you than normal. Treat your search like you would for any other puppy. Go to a breeder with a list of questions, and make sure to see where the puppies are being kept. If possible, take a look at the parents and ask to see any health certificates. You might even be able to find a white Pug in a rescue center. You can find local breeders by searching online or in local papers. You should try to find reviews where you can! Similar Breeds For some reason, the Pug might not be right for you. Either way, take a look at some similar breeds below. They originated in China, where, in ancient times, small, flat-faced dogs were held in high esteem by the imperial family. They spent their lives in the lap of luxury as companion dogs, but some lived in monasteries with Tibetan monks. Pugs were only found in Japan and Russia until the 16th century when they were first imported into Europe by Dutch traders. In Europe, they remained as popular with the royals as they had been in Asia. How White Pugs Gained Popularity White Pugs are pretty uncommon and have seemingly been popularized mostly in recent times, controversially, by unethical breeders who sometimes capitalize on breeding albinos and marketing them as rare. However, Pugs as a breed have been popular for a very long time, beginning when they were lapdogs for Chinese royalty. From there, they headed over to Japan and Russia, then Europe, where more royals fell in love with them! Monarchs who have kept Pugs include Queen Victoria and Prince William the Silent, the latter being responsible for making the breed popular in Britain when he visited with his Pug collection. In , the Pug became the mascot for a Freemason society named—wait for it—the Order of the Pug thanks to their steadfast devotion and loyalty. The AKC recognized the Pug in , but only two colors are recognized as standard—fawn and black. Moreover, the AKC lists only black mask as a standard marking. Pure-bred Pugs can certainly be white, but this is considered a non-standard color, like the coat coloring pattern brindle. Albino Pugs Have Pink Pigmentation One way to tell the difference between a truly white Pug and an albino is to check for pink pigmentation around—not in—the eyes. An albino will have this pink pigmentation, whereas a white Pug will not. Albino dogs are typically blue-eyed, contrary to popular belief that their eyes are pink. Image Credit: Murilo Mazzo, Shutterstock 3. Josephine Bonaparte Had Pet Pugs When the wife of Napolean was imprisoned, she communicated with her family via secret messages her pet Pug at the time would deliver. All Pugs make great pets thanks to their typically affectionate, easygoing, and cheerful nature. They adapt very well to apartment life and only require a moderate amount of daily exercise to keep them happy, and only need to be brushed weekly as a rule because their coats are easy to maintain. This makes Pugs a good fit for many kinds of owners with various living arrangements. One thing to be aware of is that Pugs are susceptible to certain health issues—particularly breathing issues—because they are brachycephalic dogs. For this reason, they quickly become uncomfortable in hot weather, as this exacerbates their breathing difficulties. The breeding of Pugs is a subject of controversy because of the discomfort they can suffer due to breathing problems and their wrinkly skin, which is vulnerable to skinfold dermatitis. If you have an albino Pug, they may also be prone to sunburn and skin cancer. Conclusion To recap, truly white Pugs , which come about as a result of leucism, are very rare and are distinct from albino Pugs, whose bodies do not produce melanin.

Chew Toys. Once those are taken care of, keep in mind that you'll still need to purchase grooming tools , training collars , training treats and toys , such as a ball on a rope and tugs , tags or getting microchipping done etc. Making sure your new puppy will be happy, healthy, comfortable, mentally stimulated, and well trained definitely costs a few dollars and requires enough gear to fill up a medium-sized tote or better. Prep your home. You're bringing in a small terror ball of destruction inside of your home. Keep cords safely out of the way. Anything that's expensive and breakable, chewable, or anything less than immortal should be put up high, or in a room the puppy has no access to. Research the plants in your home to make sure they're not poisonous to dogs. Keep your medications stored away safely. Keep all dangerous chemicals locked up, or up high out of reach. Try to close off an area of your home where you spend the most time so your puppy can spend time with you and the family without being able to wander freely and get into trouble. Look for home care. If you can take a week or two off, that's phenomenal. It'll help you bond with your puppy and give you a head start on potty training. But, if you work, even if you take time off, you'll have to return to work eventually. Make sure you have arrangements put in place to help when you're not home. If you have family members or friends who can help with letting your new puppy outside to use the bathroom, that's great. If not, you'll need to look into dog walkers, pet sitters, doggy daycares etc. If someone will be coming to your home to help out, make sure you get a key made for them. Find a good trainer. All trainers are good trainers in their own minds, so look for ones who compete in obedience or protection sports preferably. They don't just talk about training, they do it, and compete against their peers. Such a trainer will almost always be better and more knowledgeable than a trainer who got a certificate in weeks but has never competed. Competition helps trainers understand where they are weak, and there's usually someone around willing to help them strengthen their weaknesses. These are the people you want to employ to help you. Once you've found a good trainer, stick with them. If you're doing classes, finish the classes. If you did boarding and training, make sure you bring the dog back to that trainer for issues. Half a program, or passing a dog from trainer to trainer is just going to cause a lot of regret later. That said, if your trainer isn't knowledgeable enough to tackle specific issues, or isn't as good as you thought, it's perfectly okay to seek help elsewhere. A good trainer knows their limitations and what they excel at. You shouldn't expect an obedience trainer to be able to teach your dog to compete in protection sports down the line if they don't have experience in that arena. Pick a reputable breeder. This is the most important part of the list. You always hear that you need to go to a reputable breeder, but what does that truly mean? What makes someone a reputable breeder? A reputable breeder always gets his breeding stock's hips and elbows x-rayed and certified by PennHip, OFA, or the organization of the dog's home country if they're from Europe or elsewhere. Reputable breeders have a purpose to breed. They have a goal they want realized that is more than making a quick buck. Good working line breeders put an emphasis on health, strong nerves, working ability and drive, so they can produce solid working dogs. Good show line breeders breed with the same ideals, but there's a bit less focus on drive and working ability. There are also some breeders who specifically focus on producing good family pets that they describe as medium to low drive, healthy and medium of character neither hard, nor soft of temperament. It's up to you which you pick, but all should have health testing done and be stable dogs who aren't fearful or outwardly aggressive. Reputable breeders are obsessed with cleanliness and health. They keep their whelping quarters tidy and their pup's health and well-being are their 1 priority above all else. Your puppy should've received a "Well Puppy" checkup prior to coming home and should have a vaccination history. Puppies may also come microchipped or tattooed for identification, although ear tattoos are becoming more and more rare. Reputable breeders only breed dogs that are registered or registerable in your country. Ask a few, short questions about a breeders lines and what you can expect from a puppy that they produce. Breeders have lives and jobs. They will not be able to talk to you for hours on end to answer questions. So keep everything short and simple. Ask questions like "What are you expecting from this litter? An answer like "Well, my lines have great drive and working aptitude, but their sire tends to throw puppies that are on the lower side of the standard in size" is an honest answer. The dogs are still in standard, they still fit what the breeder wants, and their only complaint is that they get smaller pups than they'd like every now and then. No dog, no line, and no breeder is perfect. Being honest about those things says a lot about the person you trust to give your money to, and trust for them to give you a healthy, stable puppy in return. We also want to emphasize that you won't have a breeder to call with questions down the line. You'll know nothing about the pup's health history. If you choose adoption, you don't know what issues may arise down the road, so you need to be prepared for vet costs and insure you have the best trainer available in your area. We hope this helps any prospective puppy buyers or rescuers. These are some steps you can take before ever bringing a puppy home. Did we miss any? Let us know in the comments! Thank you, and please leave a like and share. A general rule of thumb is that a puppy can hold her bladder for approximately one hour for every month old they are. Most puppies find their way to a new home at months old, so they should go for a toilet break every hours to start. How often should my puppy poop a day? Typically, most pups will go once or twice a day — although some may go four or more times! How many hours should a German Shepherd puppy sleep? On average, a German Shepherd puppy will sleep for 18 hours a day. Some pups sleep longer than others but they usually sleep between 15 and 20 hours in a hour period. As puppies get older, they sleep less. The average 4-month-old puppy sleeps a little over 11 hours a day. Should I sleep with my German Shepherd puppy? You should not sleep with your German Shepherd puppy during the first few months home. Yet you can let your pup sleep beside you in a crate or a dog bed. Until they are completely up, they flop around, go up and down. You can help your puppy to strengthen her ear muscle by whistling and making funny noises that perk up her ears. When do German Shepherds start teething? Starting at 4 months old, German Shepherds will begin to lose their puppy teeth. But some puppies start losing their teeth earlier or later. You may discover a discarded tooth on the floor. Or you may see a few drops of blood on her chew toy. And it is not uncommon for a puppy to swallow her tooth, which is perfectly normal. When do German Shepherds get all their adult teeth? An adult German Shepherd should have 42 adult teeth. The small incisors in front usually come in first, followed by the big canines, the premolars and the molars. All adult teeth should be in place around months old. Puppies use their mouth to explore their environment, so nipping is very common. This behavior, called teething, can last until the puppy is 6 months old when all her adult teeth have started showing. German Shepherds grew into their full size between 18 months to 2 years old. But they are not considered adult dogs until they reach the age of 3 years old. If your pup is still young, one of the most effective ways to calm her down is to give her regular mental and physical exercise. The rule of thumb is that you should give a puppy 5 minutes of exercise for every month old they are. For example, a 4-month-old puppy would need 20 minutes of exercise. When do German Shepherds get their full coat? She will start the coat change on her face first. Then her fluffy puppy coat will be replaced by the smoother adult coat down her back, towards to trail and gradually down her sides. When do German Shepherds start shedding? While their shedding is especially intense during the spring and fall, they lose their undercoat during the rest of the year. Other Than Vacuuming When should I bring my puppy for the first vet visit? You should bring your new puppy to see a veterinarian no later than 2 days after coming home. Some breeders require this within 48 hours as included in their sales contract. It is very important for your vet to examine your puppy to look for signs of disease. When should a German Shepherd puppy get her vaccination? Your German Shepherd puppy is recommended to get her first vaccination distemper and parvovirus between weeks of age. Here are the recommended vaccinations from AKC for your reference: Some dogs do not need every vaccine. You should always discuss it with your vet. When should my German Shepherd puppy be wormed? A German Shepherd puppy should be wormed for the first time at 2 weeks of age, then at 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks old fortnightly until 12 weeks of age. After this, they can be wormed monthly until they are 12 months old. When do female German Shepherds go into the first heat? Female German Shepherds started their first heat as early as 7 months old, but this may vary from dog to dog. During that time, they may begin mounting other dogs or could become touchy or grumpy. There will be discharge and many owners use feminine pads and a diaper-type arrangement to keep the house clean. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior AVSAB recommends that pet guardians begin taking puppies on walks and public outings as early as one week after their first round of vaccinations, at about 7 weeks old. Instead of going for a marathon for the first time, it is advised to build up the distance with your GSD with time. Remember dogs cannot sweat like humans to reduce their body temperature. When can I walk my German Shepherd without a leash? Never let your dog go off-leash where there might be traffic or where he could injure himself. PART V German Shepherd puppy socialization guide Socialization helps them learn what to expect from the world around them and gives them the tools they need to navigate it as they get older. This includes new people, dogs, and animals, learning how to interact with new environments, and being exposed to a wide variety of sounds, smells, and sights. Socialization is especially important in German Shepherds starting from as early as 8 weeks old. This is because this breed is hard-wired to be protective of their owners as well as their property. Failing to socialize can make the dog become aloof to strangers. Other common signs of unsocialized in dogs include: Fearfulness or skittishness around unfamiliar people or animals Aggression towards other dogs or people Lack of confidence in new or unfamiliar situations Difficulty with basic training commands Inability to handle being handled or touched Puppies that are well-socialized are more likely to be healthy, obedient pets that make great additions to any household. They are intelligent dogs that can be challenging to train for first-time owners. However, with the right mindset, you can train your German Shepherd to become an obedient and well-behaved canine citizen in no time. At what age should I begin training my puppy? What should I teach my puppy first? Is it ok to crate my pup overnight? What are the basic commands every puppy must learn? How to motivate my puppy? Last but not least, we have compiled an easy-to-follow training guide. This training guide is our best effort in compiling a collection of training resources for any new GSD owner to kick-start training a new puppy — without wasting your time searching forever online. Each part is only one page long with at least one video for a demonstration. Follow these steps to ensure your new GSD has the best chance for success in their new furever home!! DO take your dog straight home. Walk him around in the front yard, inside, and in the backyard - on leash, and let him smell his new lodgings. Take him to the potty area, praise for pottying outside - correct for trying to potty inside. Obedience and structure begins immediately. DO start a schedule immediately when you bring your new dog home. If you are going to be off for two days to spend time with the dog, but then will have to go to work for 8 hours, then start the "soon to be schedule" during your days off. Do put your dog in a crate or the enclosed and safe area chosen. Do leave the house, even for a short errand, to show him that you will be back. DO respect your dog's space. Give him time to adjust to you, and your family, by allowing him to solicit attention and interaction. If he goes to lay down for some alone time, respect that. DO ask your dog to do something for reward and affection. Then you can praise that behavior, and start a relationship built on him doing things for your affection. You have just adopted a working breed dog - so let him do his job! DO monitor all the dog's interactions with the other dogs in the house, and of course any children in the house. Do not allow your new dog to bully or boss the existing dogs in your home. DO remember that for a dog the most loving thing you can do is provide structure and rules he can understand. For a dog, learning consistent rules that he is able to follow gives a sense of control and builds confidence. Once you have gotten to know each other and your dog has confidence in you as a good leader you will be able to show your affection in other ways and the dog will return it. Dogs are love machines, but remember that dogs are also individuals. Some dogs like being hugged. Some dislike it and prefer butt scratches or tummy rubs. Get to know your dog, pay attention and learn to read your dog. Both your lives will be better for it. We are here to answer any questions you may have. Please use us as your best resource. Between our Board members alone - we have over years of experience with this breed - there is nothing we have not seen or heard! Or email your questions directly to the contact who facilitated your adoption. DO NOT take your dog to the pet store to shop for a new toy. This dog does not know who you are, and has no reason to trust you and look to you for guidance. If the dog gets uncomfortable or stressed out, the only being he can rely on is himself - and he only has teeth to protect himself. He is not used to your touch, and has never been to that place before, so between the stress of that and you physically man handling him, he may get defensive and have to protect himself. DO NOT invite all your friends over to meet your dog. Remember - this is his first time coming into your home. He is not used to the way you live, or how you talk, or walk or the schedule of your day. He has no idea what to expect. DO NOT think that just because you can take a bone out of his mouth, means your neighbor can do it or should ever be allowed to do it. Use caution - get to know this dog, the good - and the bad! DO NOT take him for a big outing. You do not know what to expect from your dog. What if he is extremely terrified of purple cars? And a purple car drives by while a child is petting him and he reacts? What if he was attacked by a yellow dog wearing a coat, and your favorite neighbor comes over with his Poodle in his new sweater? This is then your fault - not the dog's. DO NOT hug and kiss your dog and lay on him. He is NOT the dog you had for ten years that just died that you did that to. He never will be that dog. You decided to save a life - and the dog you adopted has his own personality that you will need to learn about. If you get snapped at or bitten because you pushed the dog past his comfort level and decided that he should allow you to hug him and lay on him, then you could ruin any chances for this dog to have a great new life. Always keep in mind this dog has not had the advantage of one loving home all his life. He needs your guidance and protection. He needs time to accept you, you family, and your lifestyle. Time does not mean hours or even days but weeks and perhaps months. Most rescuers find that dogs do not "blossom" into their true selves in a new home until days. DO NOT physically correct your new dog in a threatening manner. He will only see it as you being an unstable and unreliable leader that resorts to physical violence and he will protect himself from what he sees as as threat. He has teeth, you have thumbs - you will win and he will lose, really lose. Amazon will donate 0. Checklist Dog Crate Getting a crate for your German Shepherd puppy is quite crucial for the following reasons: Allows the puppy to feel secure Speeds up potty training Keeps the puppy safe by controlling his environment Conditions your dog should you need to travel and use a travel crate Some people erroneously feel guilty for crating their pup. However, dogs need structure, especially when bred from work-driven breeds like German Shepherds. A dog crate provides a sense of security by reducing the space around the pet. A room might be small enough for us, but placing the puppy in it will make him feel like he is in a large vacant warehouse. The necessity of getting a dog crate brings up the question of size. What size crate is best for a new GSD puppy? Read my post on the recommended German Shepherd crate size to find out the best size to buy and why. Opt for the size inch variety. You can move the divider to make more room as your puppy grows. I draped a dark-colored blanket over the top to make it more den-like. She was around three years old when I finally got rid of it, but some dogs enjoy them for life. As German Shepherds are prone to hip dysplasia, arthritis, and other joint issues, you should invest in a good crate pad. Dog Bed You might think getting a crate is the same as getting a bed. Some crates come with a matt or pad disguised as a puppy bed. Since German Shepherds are big dogs and do not take much time to grow to their full size, you will need an orthopedic dog bed to support their weight and protect their joints. My post on the best orthopedic dog beds for German Shepherds elaborates on the pros and cons of different dog beds. The gist is that you need a bed to prevent joint pain that bigger dogs experience. German Shepherds are prone to arthritis, and though a genetic element plays a role, bad crating practices can accelerate such problems. I chose the Big Barker because of the scientific evidence that it improves joint pain and stiffness in arthritic dogs, enhancing their quality of life. This means a lot to me as my German Shepherd was diagnosed with spinal osteoarthritis at only six years old, but it helps knowing she sleeps comfortably. I have to admit — I was also attracted to their year no-flatten guarantee. You can check out my full review of the Big Barker here. Novice dog masters also make things difficult through a combination of poor choices. Then they make the situation worse by opting for a collar and using tugging as a means of discipline. This is cruel to the dog and teaches him nothing. It is a front-clip harness, meaning you lead your pup from the front, which gives greater control and steering, making it impossible for your dog to pull. A fellow dog owner designed it, and it has all the love and care one would expect from an owner who is solving a problem he has previously faced — a dog that pulled. You can also learn more about my pick of the best no-pull harnesses for German Shepherds in this article. Toys German Shepherds are full of energy, which means they have to be surrounded by things that can exhaust their excess vitality, such as a range of chew toys, tug toys, and puzzle toys. These will stimulate his teeth, muscles, and mind, respectively. Toys help your new German Shepherd develop and stay entertained. You can also use toys to train a German Shepherd to find things and track, but that comes later. For now, you must make sure you get him a large selection of puppy toys. Your new best friend needs different exercise routines and changes in the environment, both of which can be normalized via travel. A car restraint allows you to secure your German Shepherd puppy in a car seat safely. Using a dog crate as recommended above will make it easy to communicate that car rides are okay. I like the Petmate Vari Dog Kennel because it comes in various sizes, and for the first few months, you might prefer a smaller crate. This model is made from premium plastic, does not require any tools to set it up, and has lots of vents to keep your pup well-ventilated. Poo Bags Your new German Shepherd puppy is going to be the cutest thing on earth up until he has to poop. At that time, how much you like having a GSD will be strongly correlated with how close you are to a poo bag. Regardless of whether you buy a pack of poop bags or accumulate enough disposable bags to cover a month of dog poop, you need to have something to carry dog waste. Remember, a puppy poops two to four times a day. Amazon Basics Unscented Dog Poop Bags are among the most affordable products in the category, with the bags supply being the most economical. These bags are 9 inches x 13 inches, which is a much more efficient size than the standard disposable bag. You might not need this size at first, but trust me; they are the best for an adult German Shepherd. Dog Shampoo You must get dry shampoo for your dog because German Shepherds do not need to bathe more than a few times a year. In other words, your new puppy is half a dozen baths away from adulthood. In the meantime, something is required to keep him clean, right? Tropiclean Waterless Shampoo for Pets is a high-quality, low-priced option made from natural ingredients like plum, oatmeal, and cucumber. It is backed by a market leader in natural wellness and has accumulated over 4, positive reviews and ratings on Amazon. Dog Food Food, water, and shelter are some of the basic needs of all mammals. Dogs are no exception, especially when they are bred under human supervision. Therefore, getting dog food is one of the most important prerequisites for bringing home a new German Shepherd. After that, just ensure you choose a large breed food. Bringing home a new pet is a joyful experience. You might find yourself constantly staring at the beautiful yet timid puppy, and it will take a couple of weeks for the puppy to feel at home. Until then, the dog will be open to cuddles and start interacting with the person who feeds him and plays with him. Make sure he spends time inside the crate as well as outside it. The dog may seem shy and aloof for the bulk of the first week, with the first day being his most seemingly introverted one. The dog will miss his pack and call out for them with whining or whimpering sounds or even barking. You should make sure he feels safe and secure and only comfort him through the night when you take him for a toilet break. Your German Shepherd puppy will need comfort, and you can do a few things to help him feel better. Comfort the pup to make him feel secure. Feed the puppy and make sure he is warm. Turn the lights off and make sure he gets enough sleep. Your new German Shepherd needs to get used to a schedule, work on independence, and see you as the leading figure. One of the differences you will notice when your puppy is freshly released from the breeder is his excessive appetite for sleep. Some might want the puppy to wake up to cuddle. Others will wonder if it is healthy for the puppy to sleep so much. In general, a German Shepherd puppy should sleep 8 hours at night and hours during the day. Though, the dog should not be forced to fit a schedule and must be left to determine how he divides his hours of sleep in the first few weeks of adoption. Final Thoughts The arrival of a new German Shepherd puppy can be an exciting time, but excitement can also inspire nervousness. The puppy will feel less overwhelmed and scared after the first 3 days and will further settle during the first 3 weeks. This is the time to have a good German Shepherd puppy training schedule so you know what to teach and when. Related Posts You May Like:. Traveling Home With Your New Puppy On the day you pick up your new German Shepherd puppy from our facility, bring a small crate for the puppy to travel home in. We sell Puppy Packs at our facility which include a dog crate and can have one ready for you if you wish to purchase one. Otherwise, if you plan to hold your puppy in your lap on your drive home, bring a few small towels to place on your lap for the puppy. We highly recommend that you DO NOT stop at rest stops, dog parks, or parks to let your puppy go potty. Your puppy will not have received all of its parvovirus shots yet, so exposing your puppy to areas where other dogs have been increases the risk of your puppy contracting parvo. Instead we recommend that you find places that have concrete or hard surfaces like a paved parking lot. In the summertime, be conscious of the surface your puppy is walking on. At Home Care For Your New Puppy The first 24 to 36 hours in your new home is an acclimation period for your puppy to get settled in your home. It is common for your German Shepherd puppy to have diarrhea or loose stool the first week it is in your new home. It is acclimating to a new world and a different schedule. Be very mindful about what kind of dog treats and toys you supply the puppy to chew on. These are all edible things that can cause loose stool and diarrhea. These are also additional calories that puppies will eat before they eat a meal. During their acclimation to your new homes, we recommend you keep treats and cookies to a minimum. These are too rich and too hard on their systems. Wait at least 24 hours before giving your puppy a bath. You are more than welcome to keep in touch with us during this time and ask questions via email or text. The breeder will review the amount of food and schedule with you when you pick up your puppy. If your puppy has a weak appetite during the acclimation period you can add boiled boneless chicken and cooked white rice to its meals. Or you can add canned food to its meal to entice its appetite. Discard any uneaten food after each meal. Ensure your puppy has access to fresh, clean water during the day. If you are house breaking your puppy, remove access to water at least 4 hours prior to bed time. Diarrhea in very young puppies during their first weeks in their new environment is not uncommon. Here's why: Stress and Adaptation: The transition from their birthplace to a new home is a significant change for a young puppy. The stress of leaving their mother and littermates, coupled with adapting to a new diet and environment, can lead to gastrointestinal upset. Dietary Changes: Puppies might experience a sudden switch in their diet when they move to their new home. This shift in nutrition, even if well-intentioned, can disrupt their delicate digestive systems and result in diarrhea. Microbial Adjustment: The puppy's gut is in the process of developing a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria. Stress and changes in diet can temporarily affect this delicate balance, leading to digestive disturbances like diarrhea. This adjustment period is natural as the puppy's gut adapts to new microorganisms in their surroundings. While occasional mild diarrhea can be expected, it's important to monitor your puppy's condition. Why young puppies get diarrhea and how to treat it Introducing Your Puppy To Other Pets Gradual Introduction: Begin with neutral territory, not in the home of the adult dog, where both dogs can meet on leashes. Increase the time and frequency of their interactions slowly and under supervision. Supervised Interaction: After bringing the puppy home, closely supervise their interactions. Start with separate spaces and controlled play sessions, intervening if tensions arise. Ensure each dog has a safe space to retreat to. Patience and Adaptation: Understand that dogs have unique personalities. Be patient as they adjust to each other. Gradually extend their time together while monitoring their behavior and providing guidance as needed. Breeder of Authentic Australian Labradoodles Australian Labradoodles If dog breeds developed over hundreds of years to fulfill a specific needto hunt for prey, pick up birds, pull sleds, guard property, search and rescue, etc. In the Age of Anxiety, Australian labradoodles are what we need: a therapy dog. Sociable, huggable, intelligent, funny, and intuitive: this is modern-day man's best friend. We have the highest standards for the breeder dogs we add to our program, for the way we operate our business, and for the customers we select to become a family to our puppies. We are located in Westport, CT. Before adding a breeder to the program we test them thoroughly to ensure that they are free of genetic diseases; we have their hips and elbows certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals; and we have their eyes examined and certified every year. Our dogs live in our house or with carefully selected guardian families. The more puppies are exposed to different sensory experiences and socialization, the better companion dogs they will become. Puppies who have a positive experience when they hear the noise of vacuum cleaners, hair dryers, and beeping cars for example, will not be afraid of these loud noises later on. Puppies who play with children and all kinds of different adults will be outgoing and friendly. During the 8 to 9 weeks that the puppies are here, we let them experience a variety of situations which will help them become trusting and confident adult dogs. We also familiarize our puppies with the crate and begin potty training. It gives us enormous satisfaction to know that a labradoodle will bring as much joy into your life as our dogs bring into ours. Thank you for visiting True North and please get in touch if you have any questions. We would love to hear from you. A magnetic compass almost never shows true north. In fact over millions of years, magnetic north wanders considerably and occasionally reverses so that the magnetic north pole has been near the geographic south pole at some periods in the earth's history. In the arctic region, a magnetic compass is not very useful. In life's journey we are often uncertain where we stand, where we are going and what is the right path for us personally. Searching for our true north enable us to follow the right path: as we go, we need to develop our own inner compass. Finding true north is essential for accurate navigation. Quality Breeder of Australian Labradoodle Puppies! We are taking applications for current and upcoming litters at this time! We currently raise our Australian Labradoodles here in beautiful eastern Washington State just north of Spokane, Washington. We have 20 rolling acres which all of our dogs thoroughly enjoy. We raise all of our dogs and new puppies in our home with the two of us and our frequently visiting daughters, son-in-laws and six grandchildren. The dogs receive an over abundance of love and attention! We also have some of our breeding dogs in wonderful guardian family homes so they too can receive the same love and attention that our family breeding dogs receive. North Country Australian Labradoodles follows the strict breeding and registration guidelines of the Australian Labradoodle Association of America. The standards set for unsurpassed quality and responsible breeding by the association are paramount to the success and safekeeping of this outstanding breed. Some reasons why we are dedicated to Australian Multigeneration Labradoodles:. View fullsize The first labradoodle was developed in the 's in Australia as a means of providing allergy friendly coats on an intelligent service dog. With the name "labradoodle" being so popular, some breeders are crossing poodles with labrador retrievers and calling the resulting dogs "labradoodles. They might shed, they might trouble people with allergies, they might be a labrador or a poodle or almost anything in between. The goal of Multi-Generation Australian Labradoodle breeders is to develop a consistent breed with predictable traits. By breeding only multi-generation Australian Labradoodles with a lineage that can be traced back to Australia, we are doing our part to perfect and standardize the Australian Labradoodle breed. Many people who are allergic to dogs can have an Australian Labradoodle. Not only are they intelligent, but they are also very funny. With their floppy ears, wide-set eyes and wavy or curly coats, they can look like muppets. When introducing them, we like to tell people that "yes, they are as silly as they look. While resting they can assume what we call the " attack position " where their bellies are exposed, legs splayed out and tongue hanging out of their head that's lying on the ground. Australian Labradoodles are in love with the dishwasher. Anytime we are loading it they will be waiting to inspect everything that goes in. We got Matilda in .One year later we decided that with all three children away at college we should get another Australian Labradoodle and start breeding them. In we bought one of Tilly's unaltered little sisters from Pine Lodge Labradoodles. Look at our Labradoodling blog and our Puppies pages to see lots and lots of pictures. There are more pictures on Instagram. Our house sits on eight acres in Western Washington between Seattle and Bellingham. We had horses several years ago, the mare lived to be 37, the gelding we had out of her, .Now the barn is just where we lock the cat up at night. We let the dogs run wild in a large fenced yard when the weather cooperates, take them for long walks when it doesn't and keep them in the house with us the rest of the time. When the children visit they are all over their poochies, taking them for walks, runs, hikes and bike rides. And road trips. Having had many animals over the years, someone probably grumpy, maybe dad declared that there would be no more animals in the house. We had a barn, a yard and even some woods. There was plenty of room outside for all the animals anyone could need without having one stink up the house. That all changed when we got our Australian Labradoodles. If we wait too long between baths they will eventually smell like grass, which is where they spend most of their time in the summer. Otherwise you can walk into our house and not know we have dogs unless you see them. Or hear them. When you come visit, they'll say hi. The puppies we sell are registered with the ALAA and WALA , come with a two year health guarantee and will be sent to their forever home with their shots up to date, a microchip, a veterinarian's checkup and a free month of insurance available from Trupanion. Our first Australian Labradoodle. View fullsize. Millie is the sweetest little mini girl! We are so proud of the great job she does as a companion to her family and as a mother to her sweet puppies. Lily is a daughter of Popi and Oscar, this pairing has consistently produced some of our all time favorite dogs. Cocoa is the result of extraordinary breeding and exactly why we love raising these amazing dogs. This sweet girl weighs 25 lbs. What a blessing. She was one of the first black and white partis that we delivered and we are thrilled to see the unique coloring. We look forward to lots of funny, smart and beautiful puppies from this gorgeous girl. She never tires of getting loved on, chasing sticks and being an all round good sport with whatever is going on. She makes us laugh all day. Luna weighs 35 lbs. We are so grateful to have this true Ruby red lady as part of the Texas Labradoodles family. Everything we could hope for in an Australian Labradoodle Puppy. Everything we could hope for in an Australian Labradoodle. We fell hard for him the moment he was born and we have loved him ever since. He's a VERY smart and funny dog that entertains endlessly. Charming doesn't quite cover it, but trust us, he's very easy to love! His coat is wavy fleece and so far has remained a true deep chocolate. We love his white little beard and his tiny size. Ollie weighs 23 lbs. He has a fantastic fleece curly coat, which is the perfect compliment to our girls loose wavy coats. He has a caramel ice wavy fleece coat and a beautiful teddy bear face with dark eyes and a black nose. We are so grateful to have this boy in our breeding program. We are absolutely thrilled with his good looks and fun temperament. He is always happy, ready to play and ready to cuddle. We are grateful to have this handsome boy in our breeding program. When we lost our beloved goldendoodle in April , we were hesitant to get another dog but had this void in our house. We wanted our two young sons to grow up with a dog and we were just dog people. My husband began a search for labradoodles, discovered Lakewood, and we were pretty much sold. Brenda was extremely knowledgeable, patient, and attentive to detail. She cares about all of her dogs and the families she matches them up with. We are grateful for Brenda and their gift to us, our sweet Mia. Mia has a phenomenal sweet disposition and loving, gentle nature. Everyone loves her that first meets her and inquires about where we got her! Everyone should be so fortunate to have a Lakewood Australian labradoodle in their home! Sally Our experience with Lakewood Labradoodles has been exemplary. Brenda chose our canine brother for our family with great care and careful consideration. Consequently Tuckers has fit in with our urban lifestyle and busy family beautifully, bringing us great joy. Michelle Brenda was so helpful as we did our research on ALDs and helped us once we committed to a litter. We loved following our puppy from birth until we brought her home. Brenda offered helpful information to help us prepare was a great experience. We brought home a beloved member of our family. Highly recommend! I am sure someone will email me and tell me how wrong I am to write about these breeders and that it could happen to anyone but let me say that if you ever once were on the other end and got dogs from these filthy hell hole breeders that you would be as sickened and angry as I am. He looks clean, he smells better than he once did. He eats better now than he ever did. This is Sawyer. My dream dog. My once hopeful stud boy. When I took him home he was infested with worms, reeked like a New York City trash can and had hip dysplasia. It took months to rehabilitate and glue his broken shell back together. I remember standing at the door for 3 hours while he stood in my back yard not allowing me to get near him; he stood in the cold November rain and shivered. He wanted to come in so badly but was too afraid. I stood inside the kitchen soaking wet crying and begging him to come in. I finally had to get a bed sheet and with my husbands help cornered him and tossed the sheet over him. He was purchased from a well known breeder who offered a warranty and a guarantee on his health. We promptly started health testing him when he got home. Sadly he failed his OFA and was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. His breeder refuses even after receiving proof to honor her warranty. She herself admitted that she has never tested her dogs but yet sells them at a premium rate. Look for proof of testing. She never cried a day in her life for this dog. This is Sawyer, I cry when asked about him, he will always have a special place in my heart. I saw old rusted crates stacked along the drive, driving past a dog run out by some trees I saw a dog house and 4 small dogs, I parked next to a car port type structure that housed several cages stacked on top of one another in rows, inside the cages were chickens, rabbits, cats, ferrets and other small animals. There were several small shack like out buildings. I walked up to the door and knocked, no one answered but I had called 5 minutes prior so they knew I was there. I opened the door leaning inside to say Hello; looking around there were empty cages everywhere and bags of Purina stacked 10 or more bags high, empty bags and other trash scattered on the floor. Back out on the porch I called the breeder to alert them that I was there, looking up I was faced with 2 dobermans not looking very happy, I later learned that they were nice. I entered a room with a desk, sofa, 2 recliners, a TV, door covered with bed sheets and walls lined with dog crates stacked from floor to ceiling, wall to wall, filled with filthy dogs. I had arrived with enough cash to buy 4 dogs. In the cage above them I found Sawyer, then referred to as Prado. He was scared and my heart broke seeing him. I passed it up. I drove home with a pit in my stomach but vowed to take care of and do the right thing by those dogs. He has a dog brother who keeps him in line, he has been trained and know several tricks; can wave, high five, pray, dance, roll over… and many more. I get letters from Sawyer every few months and everyone of his letters makes me cry. He is doing great and is a good boy. I love you Sawyer. Another sad story starts with an Oregon breeder sending me a dog in whelp, the dog was due 2 weeks after she arrived. I took the fluffy white dog out of her crate at the airport holding her in the air to shine my smile upon her face and once again found myself looking into sad scared eyes. I took her to the vet to confirm her pregnancy and the vet told me what I already knew. I had her groomed to get her pee stained and matted coat into presentable shape; I was called by the groomer to tell me she had bit her. Took her home to have her a few days later bite my 11 year old daughter and to later have her bite a guest in my home and my vet the day I returned her to her breeder. Being told stories from clients about an Indiana breeder who is breeding a dog that was either hit by a car or stepped on, the story was told to me by multiple clients who claimed to visit the breeder and was told the dog had a funny limp and was skittish because of her accident, unfortunately the cause of the accident change based on who was visiting. Calls from other concerned customers who visited an Iowa breeder; was advised in order to visit she first had to pay for a puppy. Arriving to play with the puppies they found the adult dogs matted and dirty, so dirty even that to touch them or have the dogs brush up against them would soil their clothes and leave an awful stench. Hearing barking in a side room where they were able to gain a quick peek revealed dogs in crates stacked from floor to ceiling. Calls from a different client reported a visit to a neighboring Iowa breeder with a similar story. I will continue to report on stories from clients and my experiences with puppy mill breeders. Here are other dogs who were found in puppy mills across the United States. Please support ethical breeding and do not buy pets from pet stores or puppy mills. The Labradoodle is a companion dog and should not be raised in a kennel, they need human companionship and thrive on being loved. If you are unclear of what a puppymill is take a look at the pictures below. They are sickening and; REAL. This type of life for millions of poor unfortunate dogs are a reality everyday. For many dogs they are confined in conditions like this for their entire life until they are no longer able to breed to make their capturers money then they are killed. The dogs you see in these pictures are VERY lucky as they are being photographed because they were rescued. How can you help? Long time, no see! Where the heck did the time go? It's absolutely crazy that it's been over 8 years since I've hopped on to this blog and shared snippets of life here at Calypso Breeze Australian Labradoodles. A lot has happened in that time, good and bad. Let's get the bad right out of the way. A little less than a year after my last blog post, I lost my husband and Calypso Breeze Co-founder, Jerry, to cancer. It was, for the most part, very sudden and set my world into a tailspin. There have been many ups and downs and trials and triumphs in the years since, but the constant has been that Calypso Breeze remains a huge part of my life. In the first months after Jerry passed, life, of course, was extremely difficult. I'm not sure what I would've done without the love- and distraction- of my crazy doodles. They're sweet and silly, kind and goofy, sometimes exasperating, but ALWAYS entertaining, and most importantly, they're loving. They have, most likely, held me together and they've definitely made me stronger. THIS is why I've continued on my journey of breeding these incredible dogs. The connection they have with their human is undeniable and nothing less than amazing. I've seen them help folks of all walks of life, with different abilities, and of different ages, in countless ways. And when I see this, it makes my heart smile. It fills my soul with a sense of joy, of contentment, of hopefulness that the world CAN be a better place. Speaking of making the world a better place. Before Jerry passed, we placed two pups as our very first Service Dog pups. I still remember how proud he was when the trainer chose our dogs and how happy he was to see one of those dogs in action when she visited him in the hospital. I'm amazed at the many different tasks they can perform. Some assist with opening doors, carrying items, and retrieving objects, while others are seizure or diabetic alert dogs. Some help people with Autism or Down's syndrome, some are therapy dogs, some provide emotional support for their humans. Most of my puppies are family companions. And maybe I'm finally feeling my head bob above the surface of the water, but somehow I'm feeling a bit recharged. It seems as if life has been in a holding pattern for me, and I've not really moved forward could this be why I've not written a blog in several years? And now, I challenge you. Stop what you're doing and go and give your dog, or cat, or hairy tarantula EEK! Please remember to use caution if you're hugging your hedgehog or venomous snake, and send pictures if you're hugging your Wallaroo or Scottish Highland Coo. Wishing you Peace, Overall, the Australian Labradoodle is about as perfect as a dog can get! It has the traits that most individuals and families are looking for in a new puppy: a great temperament, a family-friendly personality, no shedding if multi-generational , intelligence, adorable looks, and it is mild-mannered, easy to train, and it comes in three sizes, mini, medium and standard. Some, like the size of your home and your schedule, are dependent on you and your lifestyle. Others depend on the characteristics of your potential pet. One of the most important characteristics of any dog is their temperament: how they interact with people, how they interact with other dogs, and their general demeanor. It is hard to find a dog with a better temperament than an Australian labradoodle. They are fun-loving, comical, and goofy. They want to do whatever you and your family are doing! If the kids are running around playing, that is what they want to do. If you are snuggled up with a good book, they will happily curl up beside you and nap. Australian labradoodles are incredibly intelligent and eager to please. They are loyal, non-aggressive, curious, and very loving and affectionate with their family and will form a tight bond with them. The Australian labradoodle is also friendly with strangers, and for this reason they do not make the best guard dog in the world. Because of their need to be around people they are known to become quite anxious if left alone for too long. For this reason, they are not suited to families that spend most of the day away from home unless other alternatives, such as doggy day care, are used. If you are feeling sad, then they will be affectionate and nuzzle into your neck. If you are feeling energetic, they will place a ball into your hands or in front of your feet — ready to play. That warm and loving Australian labradoodle personality along with their intuition makes them ideal therapy and service dogs for people with autism, physical disabilities, depression, and a number of other issues. The Australian labradoodle loves everyone and everyone loves them! Family Friendly An Australian labradoodle is happiest when they are with the people they love, and they will shower their family with affection and devotion. They will quickly become an essential part of the family. They are particularly wonderful with children—loving, gentle, and yet oozing with energy. As mentioned under the temperament section above, an Australian labradoodle is naturally sociable and bonds quickly with their family. In addition, because of their non-aggressive and easy-going social attitude, they usually do well with other dogs and pets in the household. Because of these qualities, Australian labradoodles make fantastic family pets! The Australian Labradoodle has an average lifespan of 13 to 15 years. Health Issues Australian labradoodles are generally healthy, but like all dog breeds, they are prone to certain health conditions. Only a few Australian labradoodles will get any of these diseases, but it is important to be aware of them if you are considering an Australian labradoodle as your next family pet. These are the top three health issues known to be associated with Australian labradoodles: Hip Dysplasia: An abnormal formation of the hip socket that can cause arthritis and lameness. The good news is that buying from a reputable breeder, like JoaLins Labradoodles, can decrease the likelihood of your dog inheriting these diseases as we conduct extensive genetic testing and test the hips, elbows, and eyes of all of our dams and sires before they enter our breeding program. Exercise Requirements As with all dogs, to prevent unwanted behaviors and obesity, you will need to provide an Australian labradoodle with daily mental and physical activities that will keep it happy while also allowing it to release its energy in a positive way. The Australian labradoodle has a low-to-moderate energy level, so a minute walk each day would be enough to satisfy its exercise needs. If you are active outdoors, you can take an Australian labradoodle with you — they make great walking buddies! If you have a safe, enclosed backyard, an Australian labradoodle will also love running around and playing with you. If you have a pool, or if you live near a lake or the beach, bring an Australian labradoodle along, as many love to splash in the water and swim. While indoors, an Australian labradoodle should be provided with a range of toys that will keep it mentally stimulated, as doing so will help prevent boredom. Providing indoor entertainment such as chew toys not rawhide , dog puzzles, frozen Kongs, or snuffle mats will challenge an Australian labradoodle intellectually. Giving an Australian Labradoodle several options would keep it from being bored, and it would also divert its attention from chewing on your shoes. Shorter coats are usually less maintenance. Click here to go to the WALA website. Training In addition to the generations of selective breeding to produce a gentle, well-mannered and eager-to-please dog, the attitude and temperament of an Australian Labradoodle also depends on the environment and training provided by its owner. You would be responsible for raising, socializing and training an Australian labradoodle once you bring it home. One of the best things about the Australian Labradoodle is that they are so smart which makes them easy to train. They can pick up your rules and the tricks you teach in just a short amount of time. Like all dogs, Australian Labradoodles respond best to positive reinforcement and reward-based training. Their eagerness to please their family means that a little praise will go a long way — they should be offered plenty of verbal praise and belly scratches for being a good dog. Edible treats will also motivate them during training as Australian Labradoodles are almost always excited to take a tasty treat. Owners should use this to their advantage during training sessions, just be sure not to overfeed! Australian labradoodles need consistency and patience during training. You should never use harsh tones or words and should always be gentle even if an accident or two occurs on a favorite carpet. Research has proven that positive, rewards-based training is more effective than punishment-based training, especially with Australian labradoodles due to their sensitive nature. An owner of an Australian labradoodle should encourage the behavior they want to see and reward it! Unwanted behavior should be ignored and negative punishment-based training techniques should be avoided. Read more about positive puppy training by clicking here. Australian labradoodles learn quickly. So, if an individual starts training and socialization early, is consistent, and uses positive training techniques, Australian labradoodles can make the ideal family pet! Richter notes. He adds that a good fit between dog and owner is more likely to be dependent on other factors. As the result of early spay and neutering the girls do not experience hormonal cycles and the boys never develop the testosterone-driven behaviors such as marking territory or wandering in search of a girl in heat. Is an Australian Labradoodle Hypoallergenic? The multi-generational Australian Labradoodle boasts a consistent no-shedding, low-dander coat that causes less allergic reactions in individuals who suffer with dog allergies than most dog breeds. Advantages include These loyal, gentle, and calm companions are great with children and good with other pets; They are extremely sociable, intuitive, and friendly; Australian Labradoodles are intelligent and quick to learn and respond well to early, consistent, and positive training; The Australian labradoodle is usually a good choice for individuals who suffer with dog allergies; As a result of their loving personality and temperament, Australian Labradoodles make great service and therapy animals; and They come in a variety of sizes Miniature, Medium and Standard. However, finding a reputable breeder is a must if you are considering one of these wonderful dogs. Efforts have already begun to curb this disturbing trend; several national and international organizations now offer breeder referrals and are striving to promote the breeding of healthy, tested dogs. For example, breeders who are members of the Worldwide Australian Labradoodles Association WALA , like JoaLins Labradoodles, are required to follow a Code of Ethics in breeding and follow strict guidelines that are in place to preserve and improve the temperament, health, coats, and structure of the Australian Labradoodle. Breeder members of WALA do this by conducting required health testing, supporting genetic diversity, applying uniform standards, carefully selecting breeding stock, and respecting infusion standards that preserve the magnificent traits of the Australian Labradoodle. If you have been searching for a friendly, intelligent, even-tempered, and eager to please canine companion, look no further than the amazing Australian Labradoodle! When bought from a reputable breeder, and with the correct training and socialization, you could not find a more calm and loving family dog! Australian Labradoodles Meet your next best friend

We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. It is also not uncommon for Pug parents to deal with farting noises coming from their pets all day long. Pugs Develop Separation Anxiety Pugs have always served as companion dogs. This has made them used to human companionship. If you leave your Pug puppy alone for too long, it is likely to develop separation anxiety. With a Pug at home, make sure you give it all your time and attention to keep it happy. They Can Get Stubborn Pugs have received a lot of love from the nobility for several centuries, turning them into stubborn dogs. Pugs also tend to have their ways by manipulating their owners emotionally, knowing they will give in to their cute mannerisms. Age-wise Food And Care For Pugs As a Pug parent, there are several aspects you should consider while feeding your pet to give it a long and healthy life. Whether you feed your Pug puppy wet or dry kibble, make sure it eats a balanced diet rich in proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, and water. During its early years, it is better to feed your Pug a diet rich in proteins and fats. Later, you can reduce the frequency at which you feed your little companion and keep a strict watch on its weight. For more details about what you should feed your Pug puppy, you can always approach a dog breeder or a vet. Here is the dietary routine you should follow while feeding your Pug at different stages of its life: Below 2 Months While your Pug puppy is still under 2 months old, it is okay to not give it a structured diet. You can keep its kibble open and have it eat whenever it gets hungry throughout the day. At this age, you do not need to worry about your puppy over-eating and getting obese. Between 2 And 6 Months As your Pug puppy gets older, you can give some structure to its diet. At this age, you can feed your Pug not more than four meals per day. While your pup still has a lot of growing up to do, it should not go overboard in its diet. Keep a strict watch on what your pet eats and do not give in to its stubborn nature. Above 12 Months As your Pug puppy starts turning into an adult, it is best to reduce its dietary intake to no more than two meals per day. This is when the chances of your Pug getting overweight are the highest. Make sure your pet does not over-eat and burns the calories it gains through daily exercise. Major Health Problems For Pugs To nurture a Pug effectively and give it a long life, it is important to know the health issues it can encounter during its lifespan. The Pug breeder you approach and the vet you want to take your pet to will guide you in tackling these issues effectively. Here are some of the most common health conditions Pugs are prone to: Corneal Ulcers Pugs are also prone to ulcers in their eyes, essentially because they have large eyes. Epilepsy Pugs are susceptible to idiopathic epilepsy, a condition that results in seizures in dogs for no apparent reason. If you see your Pug have seizures, take it to a vet without any delay. Nerve Degeneration Nerve degeneration is common in older Pugs, making them stagger, drag, and experience difficulty jumping. Medical researchers have not been able to pinpoint the precise cause of this condition. All we know is that it develops slowly over time and needs extensive medical examination. Dry Eye As the name suggests, dry eye is an eye condition that prevents Pugs from producing enough tears to keep their eyes moist. Depending on the cause of dry eye, the vet will tackle it with medication or relevant treatment. Walking Dandruff Also known as cheyletiella dermatitis, walking dandruff is a skin condition arising due to small mites. If you have other pets in your house, make sure you get them treated as well because walking dandruff is contagious. Pug Dog Encephalitis This inflammatory brain condition is unique to pugs. Common in young Pugs, PDE leads to seizures, followed by making dogs circle, get blind, and fall into a coma before dying. Australian Labradoodle Breeder - specialising in miniatures and small mediums Family Feedback My precious girl Ruby, had the best start in life, Peter and his family provided a secure and loving home, where she and her litter brothers and sisters were socialised with children, adults and other animals. Being raised in this family environment means Ruby has a great temperament, she is such a happy little dog, I think she was born with a smile on her face. Her mother Tess and auntie Bella are beautiful dogs, together they raised five healthy and adventurous puppies, all have great personalities. Ruby settled into her new family without any issues and quickly found all the best snoozing spots. Being so intelligent she was very easy to toilet train, we attended puppy school then dog training. She requires very little grooming, her coat is non-shedding and does not matt, I brush her once a week and have her clipped about every twelve weeks. We are situated in the suburbs of Adelaide, and are lucky enough to enjoy the surrounding beach and hills and beaches on a regular basis. We love our daily walks, games, swimming and other shenanigans. They are intelligent, friendly, cheeky, and outgoing. In general Doodles shed less, and are less prone to genetic diseases than their pure-breed counter parts. Both Jess and Tara are up to date with their vet checks, have been DNA tested for genetic diseases, and have well rounded personalities. Tara AKA Tazza loves human attention and interaction. She is always keen to do anything and everything with her human companions. She loves the water, and can't resist splashing about in everything from puddles, to her water bowl, to the ocean. She is a little clumsy, and doesn't seem to realise how big she actually is. She loves her food, any food, all the food, and her favourite toy is her Kong Wobbler. She loves trying to round up our cat, and keeping an eye on everyone. Off lead time is Jess' favourite, when she can run, follow scents, explore the unknown, and meet new humans. Jess is not very interested in toys, but loves any toy that is smeared with peanut butter, bones, and dried dog chews. We love to spend time with them, in the back yard and beyond. Jess and Tara's health and well being is our number one priority. We keep them mentally stimulated with new sights and sounds, 'enriching' toys such as dog puzzles and Kong dispensers, and consistent positive training. They are regularly exercised, and get a blend of quality kibble, wet food, treats, bones and chews. When looking at homes for pups, we expect buyers to acknowledge the requirements of intelligent active dogs, and plan to provide as good an environment as possible for the pup. That's what being a responsible pet owner is all about. Adelaide Doodles. About Labradoodles What is special about Alpen Ridge and why get your puppy here? Alpen Ridge has always been based on a guardian program where the breeding dogs live with families not in kennels or overcrowded situations. This allows them to be the companions they were bred to be and have their life long families. My focus is quality puppies that are reared in a home environment. You become part of the Alpen Ridge Family, not just a customer. Here are some helpful tips to understand what a breeder means when they are using these phrases. The original multi-gen Australian Labradoodle, which is the original Labradoodle, has a foundation stock including 6 different parent breeds. This was a breed that was developed with goals in mind for a low shedding service dog, not a designer dog. The multi-gen Labradoodle has only poodle and lab in its heritage. It does not include the other parent breeds that were originally used by the creators of the breed. These dogs tend to shed their coat since they are more closely related to the Labrador and often have a wire hair or feathered look to them. F2 would be two F1 bred together and there can be quite a variation in coats. These dogs have not had the multiple generations of Labradoodle mated with another Labradoodle nor the addition of Australian Labradoodle foundation stock or multiple parent breeds. They are often developed to bring new bloodlines into the breed and bred into the mulit-gen lines. Apply for a Puppy Sunset Hills welcomes you! Follow our Weaver Dairy Goldens Facebook group for updates on this and upcoming litters. These dogs are eager to please, and can adapt to many different environments. Goldens have a very pleasant personality. The Golden Retriever's coat ranges in color from light to dark gold, with varying shades of red. Their easy-going temperament makes them one of the most popular breeds in America. Our breeder obtained Goldens from these lines and has been breeding the lines since .Pups from this bloodline have been known to live up to 18 years we sold a pup in April to a family whose male pup from these lines lived to be 18, and several others to families whose pups from these lines lived to be years. We moved to Bessemer City, North Carolina in .As a profession, Ken is a truck driver and I am a Legal Nurse working from home. We have owned dogs and cats for as long as we have been together. She looked like a black Golden Retriever, and had the best personality and temperament ever. He is our pride and joy. School and his fiancee', Hannah, keep him very busy. They have the perfect little family. Mags and Baley are even more spoiled with the kids than when they lived with us, which I never guessed would be possible. After researching both breeds, we chose the Golden because they are a little less energetic, but still have a great personality and are eager to please. Our first Golden, Zoe, was on the higher end of the energy spectrum for a Golden. We didn't realize how laid back the breed could be until we got our next Goldens, Baley and Maggie Mae litter mates. Then Baxter, who came from the same breeder but a different bloodline, showed us just how chill these wonderful dogs can be. The fact that this is the best breed ever has been confirmed with each Golden we have had the pleasure of owning over the years. We will likely never own another breed. Hobbies: Our Goldens are our main hobby and our passion. We are constantly learning better ways to take care of them. We love have puppies once or twice a year.We also enjoy spending time together as a couple and with friends, riding our Harley Davidson motorcycle in the mountains. It is a great stress reliever. Boxer Dog Heat Cycle Overview If you have a female Boxer dog, you will want to understand all that you can regarding Boxer heat information. Smaller breeds such as the Pomeranian, Shih Tzu, Chihuahua and others may enter and leave a cycle without an owner even noticing. However, with a larger breed such as the Boxer, symptoms and care are much different. The heat cycle is the phase that female canines enter when their bodies are ready to reproduce. Menstruation will occur a discharge of blood due to the lining of the uterus shredding off. Here, we'll go over common questions. What are the Symptoms? When your Boxer is in heat, the symptoms will be an enlarged vulva. Sometimes it will turn a dark red. As with most medium and large sized breeds, blood will be noticeable. Puppies can wear "doggie diapers" to keep things clean. Adult dogs can have a towel put down in the areas that they are prone to rest and sleep. Unless you are seriously thinking of breeding your Boxer something that should be only done by professionals , your Boxer should be spayed by the time she is an adult; therefore stopping the heat cycle. When your Boxer is in heat, the main symptom will be an enlarged vulva. Some owners may be surprised to know that a female Boxer can enter heat relatively early. Boxer dogs typically enter the first heat between the ages of 6 months old and 1 year old. However, some may have it as early as 4 months or as late as 15 months old. If your un-spayed female does not have her first heat by the age of 2 years old, you'll want to alert the veterinarian. Since the heat cycle will occur when a Boxer is still a puppy, this means that he is able to become pregnant at that young age. This is just another reason to consider having her fixed. The cycle itself will last anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks. This will happen about 2 times a year. Each dog is different. However, each dog's body generally will follow a pattern. Once your dog has gone through 3 cycles, you should be able to predict how long it lasts for her and how often. Dogs can enter heat for their entire lives; unlike humans it does not always stop as they grow older. Allowing a senior dog to go through the physical stress of heat is neglectful. A female Boxer should be spayed as soon as possible. The majority of veterinarians recommend this even before the first cycle comes. This will keep your Boxer healthy and increase her life span. The answer is no, but beware. An owner may think that their dog's heat cycle is over, when in fact it is not! Some female dogs will experience pain. When a dog is in pain, they will most often want a quiet place to retreat to in order to rest peacefully. It is best to have a dog bed set up in a quiet area of your home. You can line it with a towel. When you take your Boxer outside, keep a close eye out for other dogs. Males dogs, of any breed even a Chihuahua! They will sense this 2 ways: From her smell, up to 3 miles 4. They will also pick up on her scent from any current urine in the yard which will have traces of her blood. Especially for Boxer puppies, it is recommended to limit outside activities during this time. This is prevent any confrontations from un-neutered male dogs. It is not unusual for a female to want to rest a bit more or show nesting behavior during her heat cycle. Should I Spay? Un-spayed female dogs have increased odds of developing ovarian and mammary cancer. Spaying her will also stop her heat cycle and take away this twice a year issue. Spaying her will also stop the chance of unplanned puppies. Since a Boxer will have heat from when she is a puppy to possibly when she is a senior dog, spaying is the responsible action to take for the health of your Boxer. The procedure should be done by an experienced veterinarian. Your Boxer will be sedated and recovery will take a week or so. Estrus Stage The Estrus stage is perhaps the most significant stage because now your boxer IS fertile and capable of conceiving. The Estrus stage usually lasts for days following the proestrus stage. Diestrus Stage The third stage is called Diestrus. If your boxer has not been impregnated, her body will begin the process of returning back to normal. If she has conceived, then this is the stage she remains in for days until giving birth. Anestrus Stage The Anestrus stage is considered the resting stage. Something that many owners worry about is how to care for their boxer when they go into heat. What should you expect? How will your boxer handle it? Change in behavior and temperament The first thing to keep in mind is that her behavior and temperament will likely change. This can be quite worrying for owners, especially during the first one, but just know this is a normal reaction. She might appear less enthusiastic, tired, extra needy, clingy, more aloof, or irritable. Whatever the change is, just be sure to go with it. Everyone needs to be on the same page, giving her space when she wants it, and support when she wants. Her scent will travel far and male dogs will be attracted to her right away. You want to avoid all close encounters with male dogs as your boxer will likely react aggressively. I always recommend using a long leash, even in your own yard. This is particularly crucial when your boxer is in the estrus stage and fertile. Make no mistake, this happens often! The yard will suffice for three weeks IMO. This will reduce the amount of blood and discharge in different areas and will make cleaning easier. This is to reduce the amount of bacteria build-up and to keep her area as hygienic as possible. Be sure to grab some pet-friendly cleaning products and remind yourself this is only a temporary blitz of mess! Stay sane! So having a place to lay down in peace and quiet is a small but crucial thing to ensure. Little things like shutting the windows to reduce external noise, making her bed more comfortable with towels, and even playing classical music yep, classic music is said to be very relaxing for most dogs! Technically, boxers can have puppies and be bred from their first heat cycle, whenever that is. For some, this may be as early as 4 months old. This, however, is not recommended, even if your boxer has her first heat later than this. By this time, she should be at least 2 years old. This gives her time to mature mentally and physically before putting her through such a strenuous event. By waiting, you also gain more time to check for potential health issues. This is unfair and does not fall in line with responsible breeding. In addition to this, by waiting a little longer, the mother will be more mature, sensible, and capable of raising a litter. For those that are bred very young, it often causes excess stress and behavioral issues further down the line. Boxers normally have between puppies in a litter, although this can vary drastically. Some boxers may only have 3 or 4 puppies and others could even have up to 10 puppies in a single litter. Thank you for reading! Goldendoodle Breeding Experience Nineteen years ago when I started breeding F1 goldendoodles no one was familiar with the breed. It is my goal to share with anyone who wants a dog to know what an awesome breed are goldendoodles and bernedoodles. All dog breeds are wonderful but my love, devotion, and my passion are for doodles which is why I breed no others. Meet The Breeder I began breeding with my two precious golden retrievers, Bella, and Piper and spent two years watching them grow up before I became a full time breeder of Goldendoodles. Very recently I decided to add Bernedoodles to my program. I did a lot of research before deciding on Bernedoodles. Why did I decide on Bernedoodles? I believe the key to a great litter is a happy and healthy mom and dad raised in loving homes. Doodles make awesome family dogs, especially loved by children! You are getting a mix of two very special breeds and it is like the best of each breed comes out in the Goldendoodle. Deborah was great in preparing the pups for their future. These are indoor dogs that are all desexed before they leave the breeder. That means you could be taking home your perfect puppy within a matter of weeks of starting your search. How to Pick a Responsible Breeder Responsible breeders will always: Encourage you to visit their premises so that you can choose a puppy and meet its parents. Show you any licenses they have to prove their credentials as a breeder. Insist on delivering the puppy to you or arrange to meet you somewhere random to give you the puppy. Insist the puppy is fully vaccinated at less than eight weeks of age. If the breeder seems less than genuine, continue your search elsewhere. Now that the demand for puppies has slumped, we hope that puppy mills will go out of business altogether. FAQs In this part of our guide, we answer some of the questions most often asked by potential Goldendoodle puppy owners. A: Crossbreeds generally live longer than purebred dogs and are healthier, which is one of the reasons they are so popular. For example, my last dog, Jess, was a Border Collie-German Shepherd crossbreed, and she lived to the ripe old age of 18 years! Goldendoodles generally live for up to 15 years. However, the mini sizes of these gorgeous dogs tend to live for longer than larger, standard types. Q: Is a Goldendoodle a high-maintenance dog? A: All dogs are pretty high-maintenance, depending on your viewpoint! I was amazed at just how much time I had to devote to caring for my pup throughout her long life. Although the experience of owning a dog of any breed is incredibly rewarding, you must genuinely have the time to spare. Q: Can Goldendoodles be left home alone? A: Goldendoodles can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for too long, which is an important consideration. However, if you crate-train your dog correctly and raise him in a loving environment, you should be able to leave your pet home alone for up to six hours. Q: What are the pros and cons of owning a Goldendoodle? A: Goldendoodles make excellent family pets, typically getting along well with kids and other pets. These dogs are pretty trainable and can make excellent hunting companions, as well as hiking and biking companions. On the downside, curly-coated Doodles need lots of daily grooming to keep their coats in good condition and prevent matting and tangling. These are very lively dogs that need plenty of daily exercise to keep them physically and mentally grounded. Q: What do I need to know before getting a Goldendoodle? A: If you want a Goldendoodle, you must understand that these are not cheap dogs to buy! However, demand has now dropped, and so have Goldendoodle prices. The price of your puppy will vary from state to state. For example, a high-quality, well-bred Goldendoodle puppy from a breeder in Texas will usually cost slightly more than one from a breeder in Colorado. Q: Is a Goldendoodle good for beginners? A: The Goldendoodle temperament is ideal for a beginner. These friendly dogs love to be around people, especially if you have an outdoorsy lifestyle that ensures plenty of exercise for your pup. Doodles are usually pretty trainable, and you can have hours of fun training your new canine chum. Final Thoughts Did you enjoy our guide to the best Goldendoodle breeders in Arizona? As the smaller poodle hybrids grew in popularity and success, Golden Retriever breeders decided to breed them with the standard poodle for a larger family pet. They are extremely smart, so they learn quickly, and they love children and other pets. Discover more about our Goldendoodle puppies for sale below! Most Goldendoodles are a first-generation cross, as such, they exhibit hybrid vigor — a phenomenon in animal breeding referring to the fact that the first cross between two unrelated purebred lines is healthier and grows better than either parent line. Vigour lessens with each successive generation. The most common colors for Goldendoodles are black, brown, gray, red, white and yellow and most are light to non-shedding. A Note on Hypoallergenic Traits Poodles have a reputation for being hypoallergenic, meaning they can supposedly be tolerated by people who have dog allergies. That being said, allergies are not caused by dogs themselves but by dander, the dead skin cells shed by all dogs and people. Goldendoodles tend to have less dander though than other breeds. Most Goldendoodles do have a low to non-shedding coat making them more tolerable for people with allergies. The Goldendoodle may shed less than a golden retriever, but the degree of shedding will vary from dog to dog. Grooming requirements are as varied as coat types, but most doodles require regular brushing to avoid matting. A dog with a coat that sheds less will require more grooming than one that sheds more often. Our Goldendoodle puppies come from responsible and reputable breeders! This is important, so you know you are getting the best hybrid puppy from healthy and happy parents. Your Goldendoodle will be a mid-sized, fluffy, cheerful canine companion who is not too high maintenance but is energetic enough to share an active lifestyle. Living Conditions The Goldendoodle is great for owners who do not want to deal with hair in their cars and homes. You can train them easily, though they are not going to do well in an apartment because they are large and full of energy. Expect fewer repetitions when training this breed. They have a wonderful, cheerful and playful temperament and they will do just fine with kids and other pets. This dog will bark and alert its owners when an intruder is present, so they make great family pets and watchdogs. Disposition Goldendoodles make marvelous family dogs. If left unattended in a crate or elsewhere for long periods of time, a Goldendoodle will become bored and lonely and may become depressed and destructive. Goldendoodles often have an uncanny ability to communicate with their people. Some have even been trained as guide dogs. Goldendoodles are active and need regular exercise. This is a great breed for kids and is known to be playful and affectionate around them.
