On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! This gentleman did more to establish and popularise the breed than anyone. After World War Two, he gathered together as many good examples of the breed as he could find, sourcing dogs from farms throughout the rural south. Obviously, there were no pedigrees on these dogs. Johnson relied on his memories and experiences with these dogs since his youth in the 's and 's. He then set about breeding best to best in order to set a consistent "type" and temperament. These standards were approved and the American Bulldog was approved for registration by the National Kennel Club on July 7, .Whilst it is important to have an understanding of the history of the Southern Bulldog, most important for our breeding program is where we are going in the future. We cannot change history, but we are setting clear goals for the future. Since , we have been involved in collecting quality dogs from America and New Zealand in an effort to breed a line of dogs that are healthy, people friendly, sound of temperament and capable of doing the kind of general work their ancestors were prized for. Most people want a dog that will be a reliable and stable family member - not a dog that will bite people or other dogs without extreme provocation. We are striving to produce dogs which will not be subject to health problems such as hip dysplasia or NCL. This is a time consuming, expensive but rewarding process. They can usually be relied upon to remain non-aggressive unless directly challenged or threatened. This means all the fun of ownership without the hassles of breaking up dog fights. Despite their stable temperament and friendly disposition, Southerns are certainly not a breed for the inexperienced. They are highly active, powerful dogs that require training, supervision and daily exercise. A bored Southern will quickly become a nuisance around the home. Owners must be prepared to devote plenty of time to their dog in order to get the best out of them. Formal training is recommended. We have used quality working American Bulldog stock to produce a line of dog that is intelligent, stable, healthy and trainable. Unfortunately, many American Bulldog breeders today are producing dogs of exaggerated physical and mental characteristics - dogs which bear little resemblance to the working dogs of old. In view of the fact that there is very little proven "bulldog" blood in todays dogs, it seems inaccurate and downright misleading to refer to them as bulldogs at all. We are in the process of using DNA profiling in an attempt to determine the exact make up of these lines, but it is likely that science will not allow accurate results for some time yet. The more common disappointments for pet purchasers come from commercial sources--especially pet shops that often buy puppies from the infamous "puppy mills" that take little notice of the quality or health they are producing. The pet store or dog broker will sell you a puppy with a breeder's name attached to the paperwork--but this puppy may easily have been born in a puppy mill. The reputable breeder, on the other hand, will not only be able to demonstrate the pedigree and registration papers, but will also show you either the sire or dam themselves, or pictures of the parent who may be owned elsewhere. Though the mere presence of "papers" does not guarantee good health, conformation, or temperament, you will most often find these attributes in the puppy who has been raised with loving care in the home or kennel of a conscientious hobby breeder. The serious breeder often strives to produce a potential "champion. Sometimes the distribution of white markings alone may make the difference between the so-called "pet" and show-potential puppy. The pet puppy will have benefited from the same proven bloodlines, nutrition, and medical care as its "champion" littermate. Do you have the time to spend with a very young puppy? Will someone be home to housebreak him? Would an exuberant 6-month old puppy overwhelm a tiny child? Or would he be better matched with a 6-year-old youngster? Remember too that the puppy under 3 months needs lots of time to rest. Don't forget that adult dogs, already trained, also make ideal pets. While much can be told at six to eight weeks about the puppy's eventual looks, if you are seeking a show prospect you might be better off waiting until the pup is six to eight months of age. At that time, be prepared to pay a higher price for all the additional time and effort that the breeder has spent raising the show potential Boxer. Male or Female? This choice is a matter of personal preference. Both males and females make admirable pets. Breeding is a serious committment of time, energy, and money, and not to be taken lightly. If breeding is not anticipated, it may be appropriate to spay or neuter your dog. This procedure is best done as your Boxer approaches adolescence. Please be aware that these surgeries should be discussed with your veterinarian as to safety of anesthesia and any long term effects other than sterilization. Spayed and neutered animals are not eligible to compete in the conformation ring but may be shown in performance events. Check this list! Tails should have been docked within a few days of birth. Optional removal of front dewclaws fifth toes is done at the same time. The Boxer has no rear dewclaws. Ear cropping is customary and appropriate but not required--it is a matter of personal preference. Uncropped ears are permitted under the breed standard. If cropped, this procedure is done under general anesthesia, usually between six and nine weeks of age. If the puppy is taken before cropping, the breeder usually makes arrangements. The breeder also advises regarding aftercare and taping if ears are not already standing. Sometimes this is a lengthy process. In the male, both testicles should be descended into the scrotum. There are two ways to register puppies for the first time: 1 Limited Registration If the puppy is not to be bred, and is being purchased only as a companion pet, the breeder may check off the Limited Registration option.
