While it is nice to feel so loved, puppies can bring some parasites with them from their previous home. As some worms can be transferred to family members, including children, it is essential - for both their health and yours - to start them off on a preventative worming schedule from the start. What worms are puppies susceptible too? In Australia, puppies are susceptible to intestinal worms, including roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm, and also to heartworm. Unlike intestinal worms which live in your puppy's intestines, heartworms live in a dog's heart. Why are puppies prone to worm infections? Puppies are incredibly susceptible to worms. They can pick up worms from their mother's milk, from other adult dogs at the breeder's or rescue shelter, and also through their constant desire to investigate, sniff at or eat most things they come across. Grooming and swallowing fleas carrying the infective stage of tapeworms can also lead to infection. Symptoms of worms in puppies Symptoms of intestinal worms in puppies include loss of appetite, diarrhoea or ill-formed stools, vomiting, poor growth, dull coat, or scooting dragging their bottom across the ground. In heavy infections, puppies can sometimes appear 'pot-bellied'. The good news is that common worms are easily controllable with a reliable worming schedule. Treatment of worms in puppies Worming your puppy from the day you get it is a good idea. This will help keep them, your house, and your family all healthy. Check with the breeder or rescue centre for how often they wormed your puppy, including when the last dose was, and continue that schedule. Puppies should be wormed every 2 weeks, from birth until 12 weeks of age. Then every 3 months. We suggest choosing an ' all wormer ' which will cover for all intestinal worms and tapeworms. You can also ask your vet for advice about worming brands and schedules - there are tablets, spot-ons and collars all designed to help. If you need assistance, your vet can also help show you the best way to give your puppy a tablet. For example, hiding a tablet within a puppy treat. Impact of not treating your puppy properly for worms Poor growth, intestinal upsets, and potential to infect human family members are all good reasons to treat regularly for intestinal worms. It is important to realise that worming treatments do not prevent worms; they only kill worms. So it's essential to deworm regularly. Ongoing worm prevention for puppies and adult dogs Because they can inherit worms from their mothers, worming treatment in puppies should be started early. Puppies should be wormed every two weeks until twelve weeks of age, then monthly until six months of age. Once they have reached six months of age, a puppy can transfer onto an 'adult' worming schedule. All adult dogs need to be wormed every three months for effective protection. For peace of mind when it comes to worms, it is always useful to understand how often and when you need to be worming your puppy. That way, you can ensure you are protecting their, and your, continued good health. Always ask your veterinary health team for advice if you have concerns for your pet. Related articles. Modified live and killed virus. The diluent contains killed antigens for Canine Coronavirus Vaccine, L. The intranasal administration stimulates immunity inside the nasal passage where much of the disease process begins. Rabies Vaccination- 1st vaccine at 16 weeks. If your puppy picks up a parasite, it will show up almost immediately in their stool. Parasites are most commonly spread by birds, bugs, and water sources, so regardless of where you live, those are just about everywhere. Adult dogs can also be susceptible to parasite infections but their immune systems are more likely to rid of the parasite on its own. Not always though, which is why we highly recommend getting your dog on a regular deworming schedule. Your puppy will be regularly dewormed with quality products against a wide variety of worms, giardia, and coccidia before leaving our home. We recommend to continue deworming your puppy every two weeks until your puppy is 16 or so weeks old. By keeping your puppy on a deworming schedule, you will help to prevent your puppy from contacting parasites. If your puppy aquires a parasite of some sort, don't freak out! Remember that dogs are animals and parasites are both easy to contract and typically easy to get rid of. Get a fecal from your vet to figure out exactly what parasite you are dealing with and treat accordingly! It requires your dog to be in a vertical and upright position whilst feeding and drinking. Hiatal hernia A hiatal hernia is usually detected when your dog is exercising or particularly excited. This causes an opening in the diaphragm called the oesophageal hiatus which the oesophagus passed through prior to entering the stomach. A hernia can sometimes develop in this location due to an issue caused by one of the below: A protrusion of the oesophagus Lower oesophageal sphincter Part of the stomach A hiatal hernia will mean a trip to the vet again for your French bulldog and quite possibly some surgery. Anti-inflammatory drugs can also be used to help reduce inflammation inside the oesophagus. However medication will only reduce the frequency and severity of the hiatal hernia but will not remove it totally. Surgery may be needed to put the oesophagus and stomach back to what is considered the normal position. As unpleasant as it sounds, if you can video your French bulldog whilst being sick or even take a photo of what they produce it would help the vet to identify the problem and therefore get your dog the best treatment. The reasons your French Bulldog keeps throwing up white foam appear to be very varied. In the majority of cases I read about, they said it might not be anything serious, but for peace of mind always seek professional advice. The first thing you need to do is actually examine what has been throw up by your French Bulldog. It might not actually be vomit but could instead be them clearing their airways. French Bulldogs are brachycephalic and their airways can become blocked. It could actually be some saliva that they need to regurgitate. Your French Bulldog could throw up after eating. They will need some TLC. Vomiting and regurgitating are two different things, and I will explain the differences at the end of this article. But for simplicities sake, I am going to address both things as the same thing; throwing up. Causes of white foam vomit 1. Indigestion and stomach upset Your French Bulldog could be throwing up white foam just because they have an upset tummy. The most common reason is gastroenteritis where they have an empty stomach and then puke up a white foam vomit. They might also have an allergy to food which is making them puke. You can try different foods to try and eliminate things. This condition is also known as bilious vomiting syndrome. The bile produced can not only be white but also have a yellow color. Puking up something they ate French Bulldogs love to put anything in their mouth they can get their teeth around, particularly during the teething phase. It might be that they ate something their stomach disagrees with such as grass or dirt. Kennel cough Another reason why French Bulldogs throw up white foam will be kennel cough. Kennel cough can be contracted when your French Bulldog has been exposed to other dogs, usually in kennels as the name suggests. It is an upper respiratory infection that your vet can treat. Bloat One of the more serious conditions I read about was bloat gastric dilatation-volvulus. As one of the most serious reasons for French Bulldogs puking up white foam and slime, it needs a vet diagnosis. It occurs when their stomach becomes twisted after expanding. The stomach can expand when filled with food, fluid, or gas which then puts pressure on their internal organs. Some vets recommend you wait a good 30 minutes after their meal, even with light walks. If you have even the smallest suspicion of bloat, call a vet immediately. Pancreatitis Another serious health condition that results in your French Bulldog throwing up white foam is pancreatitis. This is an inflammation of the pancreas, which is an organ that aids digestion of food. Your vet will need to diagnose this condition, but other signs to look out for include your French Bulldog hunching his back up, being in obvious pain around their abdomen, having diarrhoea, not eating properly, being listless, and becoming dehydrated due to not drinking enough. Kidney disease Another serious possibility related to white foam vomit can be kidney disease. Other symptoms to look out for can include increased urination or pooping the house when your French Bulldog was previously house-trained. White foam puking can be an early indicator of the disease. However, with early treatment, French Bulldogs can go on to have a good life with a reduced chance of any further complications. Parvovirus Parvovirus can be contracted through exposure to other dogs, in particular contact with faeces. Pancreatic problems: an inflammation of the pancreas. Stomach ulcers: can also result in weight loss, fever, and pain. Liver problems: your French Bulldog may not be able to digest food properly. Simply trim them off. Save the strings, you'll be able to use them! Then it will look like this! Yay, it's starting to look like something now. Continue doing this for each side of the body box. Put a second layer on all the sides you just finished. This is where your shaggy effect will come in. The first layer serves as a base, but the second layer is what's really going to make your doggie look like a doggie. Put a tail on your doggie. Lay a pile of moppies on the table and use another moppie to tie it in half. Then glue it together. Simply hot glue where the middles will meet. Then glue it to the box where you want the tail to be. Now start your first layer on the top of the body box the doggie's back. Again, you will be gluing both the top and the bottom of the string. You want this layer to be secure and serve as a base coat. Do NOT trim all of the strings! The hang over moppies will serve as your second layer on the back of the box, which is your doggie's butt : You will only be trimming around the Valentine slot. Glue the moppies right up to the round box the doggie's head. Now it's time to glue your first layer around the sides of your round box. Again, glue the top and bottom of the string, where it will lay on the round box. Use LONG moppies for this step. The hang over moppies are going to finish off your shaggy dog look! When you're done, it will look like this. Now it's time to give the doggie a chin. You need to glue the hanging moppies to the underside of the round box. Flip the doggie upside down. This isn't going to look pretty. Your job is to just get those suckers glued under there. So just start gluing the moppies. You're gonna have moppies on top of moppies and tangled everywhere. Like I said, it's not gonna look pretty. Just glue whatever you have to to get them all secure. But when you flip Fido over, viola! You have a doggie head! With a chin! Now it's really starting to look like a doggie!! Glue moppies to the top of your doggie's head. This is the only first layer that you will in fact be running a glue line for the entire length of the string. So DON'T cut them! Time to make the doggie's ears! Lay a pile of moppies down on the table and cut the pile in half. Then take a mop string and tie it tight with a double knot at the top of the pile. You want it to be nice and level because you will be gluing that end to the top of the head. Smear hot glue all over the end that you just trimmed and place it on top of the head where you want the ears. AW, now we have ears! Time to put the second layer on top of the head. Okay, this is different than anything you've done so far. It should be fairly random. You want it to look like a shaggy dog so there really is no way to mess this up. His hair is supposed to look messy and curly. You just want to place 2 or 3 beads down so that the hair looks three dimensional and realistic. Continue until you're done with the whole top of the head. Add ribbons on your doggie's ears. Just tie a simple bow and adjust until you have it looking the way you want it. And don't forget to tie a ribbon on his tail too! It's time to bring your doggie to life! Add his face! Glue on your googly eyes. Then cut out a nose and a tongue from the felt and glue them on.
