Message us French Bulldogs have become an incredibly popular breed in recent years, which is due to their adorable bat-like ears paired with their wrinkly face, alongside their quirky and playful personalities. French Bulldog health problems French Bulldogs are currently classed as a category 2 by the UK Kennel Club which means they have some particular points of concern. The most common health issues to affect the breed are listed below. BOAS is caused by a shortened facial structure which causes compression of the tissues at the back of the nose and throat, leading to respiratory issues. To reduce the chances of purchasing a French Bulldog with this health condition, ensure that both parents have had the necessary screening and look for puppies with longer noses and wider nostrils because these features will allow these animals to breathe better. These are typically caused by trauma, dry eye, or chemical burns and if your dog has this issue, you may spot them rubbing their eyes to try and relieve the pain. Take them to the vet as soon as possible if you suspect a corneal ulcer, because urgent veterinary care is key to treating this condition. Dry eye Dry eye occurs when insufficient tears are produced and maybe because of a congenital defect—which is usually the case in Frenchies—or a disease or medication. This dryness can cause the surrounding eye tissue to become inflamed and painful or you may see your dog blinking or squinting a lot or note the presence of yellow or green discharge. Cherry eye Cherry eye is a common French Bulldog eye problem. This issue is the result of the gland inside the third eyelid protruding from the eye socket, which looks like a large, red, almost cherry-like lump. Conjunctivitis As French Bulldogs are more prone to eye infections, conjunctivitis is also more common in this breed. French Bulldog skin problems There are a number of French Bulldog health issues that can affect their skin. Here we list the most common ones: Skin allergies Skin allergies are more likely in French Bulldogs and are usually caused by environmental factors such as pollen and dust mites and food intolerances from things like wheat or substances their skin comes into contact with such as washing liquids. This is where the wrinkles become inflamed and sore and without treatment, can also become infected. French Bulldog ear problems Previous Next 1 of 1 The big bat-like ears of French Bulldogs are a selling point for many, but unfortunately, these can also be a cause for concern. This is because these dogs have narrow ear canals coupled with wide openings, making it extremely easy for germs and debris to get in and cause infections. If you suspect an ear infection, take your dog to the vet because they may require antibiotics. French Bulldog skeletal problems Some of the most common French Bulldog health problems are related to their skeletal systems because they were bred to have short back legs and a curly tail. Patella luxation Patella luxation is where the kneecap slips temporarily out of place and is a fairly common condition in smaller breeds and one which French Bulldogs are particularly prone to because of their build. You may spot your dog hopping as its kneecap slips out and then returning to normal movement when it pops back in. The condition is graded from 1 to 4, from least to most serious, with the latter perhaps requiring surgery. Intervertebral disc disease With intervertebral disc disease, the discs that provide cushioning between the back bones become damaged or brittle, making them more likely to bulge, burst or slip, resulting in pressure on the spinal cord. Treatment for this condition depends on the severity, location and cause and may involve anything from medication to surgery, or a combination of the two. One of the biggest causes of concern is tooth overcrowding. Preventing French Bulldog health issues The French Bulldog health problems listed above are just conditions that this breed are predisposed to. If you want to find out more about breed-specific health, read our guide on common health problems in Pugs next. Start by mixing small amounts of the new food with their current one, increasing the proportion over several days. This slow transition allows their stomach to adjust and reduces the chances of digestive issues like diarrhea or vomiting. Look for proteins that are easily digestible and unlikely to cause any adverse reactions. Turkey, lamb, and fish are excellent choices as they provide essential amino acids while being gentle on sensitive tummies. Chicken is an option but many dogs have proven to have chicken allergic reactions. Common culprits include artificial preservatives, colors, and flavors. Some puppies may have trouble digesting grains like corn or wheat. Gut Health Matters: Probiotics and Prebiotics Maintaining a balanced gut flora is crucial for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Probiotics and prebiotics can play a significant role in promoting digestive health by supporting beneficial bacteria in their intestines. Probiotics are live microorganisms that help maintain a healthy gut environment, while prebiotics act as nourishment for these beneficial bacteria. Look for dog foods that specifically mention the inclusion of probiotics or prebiotics on their labels. Try Fortiflora by Purina, our own veterinarian recommended probiotic! When selecting a limited ingredient diet for your French Bulldog, look for high-quality proteins such as turkey, lamb, or salmon. Avoid common allergens like beef or chicken if you suspect they may be causing digestive problems for your pup. Many dogs can have difficulty digesting grains like wheat, corn, or soy. Switching to a grain-free formula can alleviate digestive discomfort and reduce the likelihood of allergic reactions in your furry companion. Grain-free dog foods often use alternative sources of carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes or peas. These ingredients provide essential nutrients while being more easily digestible than traditional grains. Remember that not all grain-free options are created equal. Taurine is very important for good heart health. Make sure any grain free food you choose has adequate taurine for heart health. Avoid foods with high amounts of fillers or hard-to-digest carbohydrates like corn or wheat. These ingredients can contribute to gastrointestinal upset and discomfort in dogs with sensitive stomachs. For example, kangaroo meat is known for its low fat content and high levels of omega-3 fatty acids. Zignature Kangaroo Dry Dog food Buy on Amazon Nutritional advantages of alternative meats compared to traditional protein sources Alternative meats offer several nutritional advantages over traditional protein sources. While chicken and beef are commonly used in dog food recipes, they may not always provide the optimal nutritional profile for dogs with sensitive stomachs. Alternative meats like lamb and rabbit are often considered more easily digestible, making them a great choice for dogs with sensitive digestive systems. These proteins are typically leaner and contain fewer additives or fillers that can cause gastrointestinal distress. Availability of alternative meat options in specialized dog food brands Finding specialized dog food brands that offer alternative meat options has become easier in recent years. As awareness grows about the benefits of these proteins for dogs with sensitive stomachs, more companies have started incorporating them into their product lines. Raise your puppy the right way from the very beginning! Here is our list below. Because of the shape of their skull, Frenchies can develop issues with their breathing when fed a diet that results in canine obesity. Being small to midsized dogs, French Bulldogs require a diet that is made with dogs of their size in mind. A French Bulldog should weigh anywhere between 18 to 28 pounds. That may seem like a large weight range, but generally male Frenchies should be on the higher end of the spectrum between 20 and 28 pounds and females should be on the lower end between pounds. Of course, their weight should also be in accordance with their height. Ideally, French Bulldogs, both male, and female should be around 12 inches tall at the withers more on size here. If you happen to have a Frenchie that is below average height, consult with your veterinarian for a diet specifically tailored to your special little pup. Overweight Frenchies can suffer from heart disease, diabetes, and often struggle to breathe. French Bulldogs are also prone to obesity, so for them to gain a few pounds could easily escalate to more serious, chronic health problems. Nutrition: Protein, Fats, Calories Another huge factor in food-selecting is the age. Young and old Frenchies alike require a selective group of nutrients to keep them in tip-top shape. Find out how much they need here. When looking for dog food for your Frenchie, it is important to find one with a low-to-moderate fat content, including omega-3 fatty acids for healthy skin and to maintain their healthy coats. Puppies Puppies need a more concentrated amount of nutrients than adult dogs do, because of their rapidly developing bodies. Nutrients such as calcium and phosphorus are focused heavily on in puppy foods, as they promote healthy bone growth. Adults Adult Frenchies are a little simpler and generally require an uncomplicated food source with a wide range of balanced nutrients including proteins, fatty acids, fibers, and carbohydrates. Seniors Senior French Bulldogs benefit most from foods that contain higher levels of antioxidants, fatty acids, and higher amounts of protein. Large amounts of protein are essential to the well being of a senior dog, compared to that of an adult or a puppy. This is due to the fact that their bodies are becoming more fragile and susceptible to disease. Our Ultimate Guide to the Best Dog Food and Treats is a terrific source for info on canine nutrition and explanations of common dog food ingredients. However, if you are thinking of creating a feeding schedule you should always consult with your vet first, as they will know how often your dog should be eating. Generally speaking, smaller sized dogs burn calories faster, so they need to be fed more regularly. Some French Bulldogs may experience spikes in energy and digestion issues when they are limited to two meals per day. Keep your Frenchie and their tummy happy by sticking to three or four smaller meals. A Frenchie that seems tired between meals might need an extra meal. You can experiment with three or four meals per day to find out what works best for your little one! Hydration: Dry Vs. Wet Food Dehydration in French bulldogs is a fairly common problem but is one you want to avoid as they are prone to overheating and developing sunstroke, particularly in the hotter months. However, as Frenchies have flat faces and small muzzles, it is important to make sure that they are hydrated enough throughout the day as they struggle to regulate their own temperature. When deciding which dog food to choose, something you should take into consideration is how much water is in the food you choose as well as how much water your Frenchie generally needs. That being said, there are significant benefits to both dry and wet dog food. Smaller sized dogs are more disposed to develop dental problems because of their smaller muzzles. Frenchies may have an easier time eating soft wet foods, but more importantly they need the hard, dry kibble to help keep their crowded teeth clean. As Frenchies are prone to developing obesity, something to keep in mind and to monitor is their weight and how their food and calorie intake is contributing to it. Generally speaking, a male Frenchie should weigh between pounds, whereas a female should weigh between pounds. Avoid the frustration, lost time, and wasted money that comes with not knowing how to properly and easily care for your Frenchie. Get Your Copy Today! To get a general idea of how much movement your Frenchie needs, a puppy requires 5 minutes of light exercise such as short walks and playtime per month of their life. For example, a puppy that is 9 months old will need around an hour of exercise twice a day. Alternatively, adult French Bulldogs should get at least 20 minutes of continuous exercise such as walking a day. Be sure to keep a close eye on your Frenchie and watch out for signs of exhaustion, no matter the age. Dry Food, Wet Food, or Both? The consistency of the food your Frenchie eats is entirely dependent on their needs. If you notice that your puppy is having a difficult time chewing the food, you can add some water to make the pieces softer. Adult Frenchies can either eat dry food, wet food, or a combination of both. Lastly, Senior dogs may benefit from wet foods. When Frenchies get older, their teeth and gums become more sensitive, often leading to tooth decay and eventually partially-toothless doggy smiles. Soft, wet foods are easier to chew and therefore a better option than hard kibble choices. May contain a higher amount of nutrients than alternatives. Has a more desirable consistency to adult and senior Frenchies. Cons: Wet food will spoil extremely quickly, unlike dry foods. Any leftover bites will need to be refrigerated which, in turn, may stink up your refrigerator. If your dog is a mess in the kitchen, you can expect smelly, wet dog food to be all over the place. Quality wet food can be on the more expensive side of the spectrum. Dry Frenchie Food Pros: Affordable and usually costs less than wet food alternatives. Though more affordable, dry food still contains decent amounts of nutrients that are essential for a healthy French Bulldog. Makes less of a mess than wet food. Less odorous than wet food options. Can be harder for some puppies and senior Frenchies to chew. Is more processed than wet food options. Consult With Your Vet The most important thing to know before purchasing new dog food for your Frenchie is to consult with your vet before you make any drastic changes to their diet. Although your own research is important when buying a new dog food, the vet should be your first point of contact as they will be able to advise you on what ingredients to avoid, how often you should be feeding your Frenchie, and how to manage their weight too. As Frenchies are predisposed to develop health issues, your vet will also be able to advise you on the best way to keep your Frenchie a happy and healthy pup! Allergies in dogs do change from dog to dog, but in short — yes, Frenchies can be prone to food allergies. IBD in bulldogs can affect both their stomach and intestinal tracts. Are French Bulldogs Fussy Eaters? French bulldogs like their food and are not generally fussy eaters, which can make them quite greedy! This is why they can put on too much weight if they are not correctly exercised and fed the right amount of food every day depending on their weight and age. As Frenchies are prone to developing diabetes and obesity, their diet is incredibly important. Caution should be taken when feeding a Frenchie as it is fundamental to their health that they maintain a healthy and balanced diet. If your Frenchie is a fussy eater or you notice that they are having new aversions to food, it could mean they have a food allergy or intolerance that you need to get checked out. Symptoms of a food allergy may include: Diarrhea. Grapes Raisins While these are just a few of the things that French Bulldogs should not eat, it is important to talk to your veterinarian about what other foods may not be suitable for your dog. Should French bulldogs eat grain-free food? No definitive answer exists, but the general consensus is that grain-free food may not be necessary for French bulldogs. Some experts believe that grain-free diets could actually be harmful to dogs, since they can cause digestive issues and other health problems. If you're unsure about whether or not to feed your French bulldog a grain-free diet, talk to your veterinarian for advice. What food do vets recommend for French bulldogs? There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as each dog's individual needs may vary. However, many vets recommend feeding French bulldogs a diet that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. This type of diet can help to maintain a healthy weight, improve joint health, and increase energy levels. When it comes to choosing the best food for your French bulldog, it's important to consult with your veterinarian and do your own research. There are a variety of factors that you'll need to consider, such as your dog's age, activity level, and health condition. Once you've taken all of these factors into account, you can then begin to narrow down your options and choose the best food for your French bulldog. Overview When you have a dog from the age of a young pup, this gives you a wonderful opportunity. It offers you a chance to bond with your dog from the very beginning. This also gives you an advantage because you will be able to train and teach your pup what they need to know before they learn any bad behavior from elsewhere. This section will discuss how to care for a Pug puppy, starting at 8 weeks old and up until he or she is an adult, at the age of 1 year. Transition to a New Home Things will run much smoother if you plan ahead and have most, if not all, of your puppy care items already in your home. Here are the most important items to have: A crate — One with an adjustable size is best to fit the needs of a growing Pug puppy. Crating is a good night time method to use until a pup is housebroken. Gates or a playpen — Choosing an area to gate off or using a canine playpen are good options for when you must leave your Pug puppy home alone or for when you cannot be right at his side. This keeps the pup in a controlled space which helps in regard to bathroom needs and keeping a puppy in one area when he or she has strong chewing urges. Puppy food — This should be obtained before the puppy is brought home. Owners will not always agree with the food that a puppy has been being fed, however any change should be done gradually. Have the food that the Pug has been used to eating on hand, as well as your new choice. Details regarding making this change can be found here: Feeding a Pug. You'll also want them to be sized appropriately and at floor level. Honey — Puppies are prone to the condition of hypoglycemia, which is a rapid and dangerous drop in blood sugar levels. Stress, among other things, can bring this on and while going to a new home is a happy event, it can also be stressful for a little pup that is leaving all that he knew and no longer has the companionship and friendship of his litter-mates. Treatment can be provided at home as plans are being made to bring the puppy to the closest animal hospital or veterinarian. A small dab of honey is rubbed onto the gums and then the puppy should receive professional treatment, sometimes an IV to restore sugar levels back to normal. Leash, collar and harness — Pugs are prone to conditions that involve breathing problems. The body structure of this breed confines breathing passages into a small space and Pugs can have smaller than normal nasal passages and openings stenotic nares. For this reason, using a harness can help a Pug breathe easier when on leash. A short 6 foot leash works best for both potty training and heeling. Read more : Choosing the Best Collar and Harness for a Pug Grooming supplies — The thick coat of a Pug sheds heavily and brushing it well and offering baths on a regular basis can help control shedding. Starting dental care at a young age can help a puppy become used to this grooming element and set up a foundation for a life time of good dental hygiene practices. Keeping the wrinkles, eyes and ears clean are important part of caring for a Pug puppy. Read more: Shedding - Expect your Pug to shed a lot and be prepared by having the right tools. Dental care - Taking care of your Pug's teeth should be high on your priority list. Ears - Expected shapes and proper care. Wrinkles - Keeping the wrinkles dry and clean. Sleeping supplies - Some owners prefer to have their puppy sleep in the bed with them and while this is not always a bad thing, an owner should think about how that will play out as the pup matures into a much larger adult dog. Having a pup get used to his own canine bed from the beginning, set up in a quiet corner of a room, may work out best. Do keep in mind that Pugs crave human companionship and do not like to feel isolated. Setting up the bed in a quiet corner of a well-used room allows a Pug to have a nice area to retreat to for rest and sleep while allowing him to be close to his human family. It will be normal for a little one to sleep anywhere from 16 to 18 hours a day. This included both night time sleep and naps that will be taken throughout the day. Chew Toys — Teething will begin around the age of 3 or 4 months old and can last up until a Pug puppy is 8 months old. Having a good supply of toys on hand for a puppy to chew on is important. Puppy Proofing Before bringing a puppy home and on a regular basis at least weekly owners are encouraged to go over all floors to remove any small objects that could be accidentally swallowed. All items that could be chewed on such as pocket books and shoes should be placed up high until the Pug has matured. Whining It is normal for very young puppies to cry when first brought to a new home, this usually only lasts for a week or so as the pup becomes used to his new family and environment. This can also be a sign of needing to go to the bathroom, so following house training guidelines, be sure to take your Pug puppy outside on a regular basis. Vaccinations for the Pug Puppy An important part of caring for your puppy will be to make sure he or she is up-to-date for all needed vaccinations. An 8-week-old should already have received his shots, as well as a de-worming. Veterinarians will have varying schedules, however this is a general guideline: 5 weeks Parvovirus: For puppies at high risk of exposure to parvo, some veterinarians recommend vaccinating at 5 weeks. Dogs at high risk are those that live in areas where wild life raccoon, skunk, deer, etc. The inclusion of either canine adenovirus-1 or adenovirus-2 in a vaccine will protect against both adenovirus cough and hepatitis; adenovirus-2 is highly preferred. You will want to talk to your veterinarian about this. Reactions to Vaccines Immunizations are intended to stimulate the immune system to then protect a dog against a specific infectious disease. It is very important to have your Pug receive all needed vaccinations. Your Pug may react to immunizations in ways that range from soreness at the site of injection to mild fever to allergic reactions. The allergic reactions can range from mild to severe. Mild- Mild reactions include fever, sluggishness, and loss of appetite. Mild reactions usually resolve without any treatment needed. This is called Urticaria. This happens when there is a reaction of the skin and shows as hives or bumps. It is usually extremely itchy. Urticaria may progress to anaphylaxis, which is considered life-threatening. However, Urticaria is the most common reaction in dogs if a reaction is to happen. Severe - The most severe reaction is anaphylaxis. This is a very fast, sudden, severe allergic response that causes breathing difficulties, collapse and possible death. This is very rare. Urticaria the moderate and most common reaction, if one is to occur happens soon after vaccination, often even before the puppy is brought home. It can happen in the car while you are driving back to your house. Your veterinarian will recommend immediate return to the hospital for treatment. Urticaria is usually treated successfully with injectable corticosteroids like dexamethasone or prednisone. Antihistamines do little to help with acute allergic reactions but may be given by injection to help prevent recurrence of symptoms after steroids wear off. Mild vaccination reactions usually require no treatment. However, if the symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, call your veterinarian. Growth Rate A Pug puppy grows quickly and this can happen gradually or with spurts and stops. Many Pug puppies have a growth spurt near the 3 to 5 month mark. As the pup nears the 1 year mark, growth will slow down. Once a Pug reaches his or her full height, there may still be some growth in the width of the Pug, as the chest widens and fills out. How a Pug ages and his growth is rapid, yet can be staggered during the first year. Getting Your Puppy Comfortable One of the most important parts of bringing a puppy home is allowing him or her to become used to their new surroundings. Allow your pup to roam around and check out his new environment. Be sure to keep a puppy's water in one designed spot so that the pup can know that it can always be found. The drinking and feeding area should be in a quite corner of a room, without much foot traffic or noise, since small puppies can feel vulnerable while eating. The absolute longest that a 2 month old pup can hold their needs is 2 hours. The bladder and bowel muscles are not yet fully developed. As they grow older, this time will increase as they have more control over their body. Usually it will increase by 1 hour for each month that goes by. Therefore, a 3 month old can hold on for about 3 hours, a 4 month old for about 4 hours and so on.With 8 hours being the maximum time for any age. Informational Note: When your 2 month old needs to go outside at least every 2 hours, be sure to not get stuck into that habit. It is important to slowly increase the time intervals. Your 3 month old can wait about 3 hours, but only if you allow the pup to use his bowel and bladder muscles to work and grow stronger. If an owner always brought their Pug outside every 2 hours, the dog would never learn to hold their needs for a longer period of time. Keep reading about the best way to house train a Pug puppy. All puppy vaccinations should be given before you take him or her out to the park, to pet supply stores or any other area in which there may have been or could be other animals. Many new owners already have another dog in the household. As your puppy grows older and is receiving the needed vaccinations, you can slowly begin introducing your new puppy to other dogs and allow normal socialization to begin. The Necessities of Care To have a healthy and happy puppy that will grow into a happy and healthy adult dog, make sure to always provide the essentials: A proper diet. You will need to decide if you want to offer manufacture food, home cooked food or a combination of both. Pugs are very sensitive to their human's emotions. A hug goes a long way! They are playful and loyal. Although Boxers were originally bred as working dogs, they make the perfect family pet. Boxers are different from each other but one trait that all Boxers have in common is their playfulness. Boxers, whether they're puppies or ones in their senior years, possess a youthful exuberance that is unmatched by any other breed of dog. Boxers have the natural ability to make their masters smile and fill a household with fun and laughter. Natural Born Entertainers Ask Boxer owners about what they think would be the most fitting profession or job for Boxer dogs and they'd likely tell you that Boxers make the perfect clowns. Boxers are natural entertainers wiggling, wagging and doing their funny antics. If you've ever been around a Boxer, you'll find it very hard to keep yourself from grinning. Put a Boxer in a room with someone in a bad mood and it will waste no time showing off its tricks to make a person laugh. One of the more familiar tricks Boxers are known for is kidney beaning, a dance they do whenever they are excited. No owner could resist smiling whenever he comes home after a hard day's work and sees his Boxer doing this dance. It isn't a bark although it is similar. Boxers are natural entertainers even when they are running. Don't be surprised to see a Boxer twist, jump and even do summersaults while it is out on a walk. However, Boxers aren't for everyone. If you're looking for a dog that will lie quietly at the foot of your bed or sleep most of the day, a Boxer is not the dog for you. Boxers are very energetic and they need plenty of attention. If a Boxer doesn't get adequate exercise every day, it can turn to doing destructive things or find ways to entertain itself like chewing on shoes. Boxers need to be walked or jogged twice a day at the minimum. In addition, they need mental stimulation. Find Puppies for Sale at Puppies. Davidson Pups is a breeder in Lawton, IA. English Bulldog Puppies English bulldogs are among the most well-known breeds of bulldogs in the United States and arguably the world. According to rankings by the American Kennel Club in , this breed is the number 2 in the option for families to buy amongst a selection of dog breeds. These bulldogs have a long history stemming from their original use for bull baiting in Britain. Many people still see these as an old English bulldog and a cultural icon, and it is one of the most popular dogs you will see in England. They do have fierce determination, persistence and an underrated strength, and these are part of why many people love them so much for a family companion. British bulldogs naturally have wide heads and shoulders, flat faces covered with skin folds and thick flaps, and a shorter and higher muzzle than many other dogs. Their thick facial skin folds are also present under their neck, and their pointed teeth and endless snorting constitute a significant factor in the fierce and sometimes scary look they have become known for. So why should you go for an English bulldog? What exactly makes them so special and wonderful anyway? Well, here are a few things we love about this breed of bulldogs. The first and most important benefit to us is that English bulldogs are very good guard dogs. Despite their relatively small size, these dogs are not to be underestimated. Their aggressive nature from their history of bull baiting has been passed down from generation to generation of bulldogs, making them mean fighters to intruders. These dogs do not hesitate to leap into action and defend their owners when there is a threat. Another big benefit is that they are family-friendly and safe to be around your children. Despite the strength and aggression they show to outsiders, you can be sure that your well-trained English bulldogs are perfect family friends that can be around your children with low chances of danger. This very tolerant breed loves to keep a quiet and watchful eye over its owners and is very good at informing you when they sense something wrong. Their short, stubby legs also make for some very funny moments, such as their clumsy efforts to climb onto surfaces, like your couch or their dramatic pouts and faces. English bulldogs have a natural pranking streak that makes you laugh effortlessly. Coming home to unwind and having an English bulldog waiting for you to home is a definite stress reliever and mood elevator. We need to rectify that, and we have the perfect English bulldog puppies for sale for you to make your pick from. With an English bulldog puppy, you can have that beautiful bully that your kids can grow up with, and that can be a perfect companion and guard for your home. All our English bulldogs are the healthiest and cutest selection of breeds that you will find in the country, and this is a fact. We have decades of veterinarian experience and expert knowledge in this breed that has helped us monitor and facilitate the best studs and breeders to produce these beautiful English bulldog puppies. We have male and female English bulldog puppies, and there are a variety of ages that you can pick from, whether you like an eight-week-old puppy, ten-week-old puppy, week old puppy, or even older. Frequently Asked Questions How much exercise do English bulldogs need? English bulldogs are a low-energy breed and do not require a lot of exercise. A daily walk or play session of minutes should meet their physical needs. However, due to their short snouts, English bulldogs are prone to overheating, so it's important to avoid strenuous exercise or exercise in hot weather. Indoor play, such as fetch or tug-of-war, can provide them with physical and mental stimulation. Regular exercise is vital for their overall health and well-being. How to train an English bulldog puppy? Train an English bulldog puppy with patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement. Early socialization and obedience training are important. Avoid punishment-based training. Find a trainer who understands the breed and its unique needs. Consistency and patience are key to success in training an English bulldog puppy. What are the key features that make Bulldogs special? Bulldogs are notable for their unique physical appearance, friendly and affectionate nature, and loyalty. They are low-energy and good with children, making them popular family pets. Their wrinkly faces and undershot jaw give them a distinct look, while their muscular build and confident attitude make them recognizable and loved by all. Where can I buy an English bulldog? English bulldogs can be purchased from various sources, including breeders, pet stores, and animal rescue shelters. When buying from a breeder, it's important to find a reputable one that's committed, knowledgable, follows ethical breeding practices, provides information about the dog's health temperament, and offers a written guarantee.
History Where are German Shepherd Dogs from? Perhaps never in the history of any breed has such concerted effort been put into improving a dog, mostly due to the formation in of the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV, an organization in Germany devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd. Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence. During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. How big do German Shepherd Dogs get? The double-coat, with a thick undercoat that sheds twice annually, loses hair continuously but can be maintained with regular brushing one or two times weekly. What are the German Shepherd Dog colors? Black, tan, solid black and solid sable. How long do German Shepherd Dogs live? Lifespan: 10—12 years What are some German Shepherd Dogs facts and information? The German Shepherd held the number one spot in American popularity for many years. Although presently it has dropped from the top spot, the German Shepherd remains as one of the most versatile dogs ever created, serving as a police dog, war dog, guide dog, search-and-rescue dog, narcotics- or explosives-detecting dog, show dog, pet—and even shepherd. Related Content. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.
Young bulldogs need several small meals throughout the day. Your puppy may need to eat up to four times a day as a puppy. Your dog will increase its weight rapidly -- possibly by as much as seven to eight times its birth weight -- within its first twelve months of life. Puppies generally need about calories per pound of body weight. For instance, if your pup weighs ten pounds, it will need between and calories each day, depending on its activity level. Even though it needs to eat more frequently than an adult bulldog, it is still susceptible to overeating. Removing bowls of food after your puppy has finished will keep it healthy. After obtaining your bulldog of any age , wait at least two weeks before changing its diet. After two weeks, gradually introduce new foods into its diet and alternate new foods with its standard diet. If it has soft or excessive stool, switch back to the old diet, then try again later to introduce a different new food after two more weeks. The caloric needs of your bulldog will depend on its age and activity level. After about 18 months, your bulldog should be treated nutritionally as an adult. Older dogs usually need about calories per day. Typical adult bulldogs need around 1, calories each day. A very active English bulldog could need as much as 1, calories in a day. Use the nutrition label on your dog food to calculate how many calories your doggie is taking in. Adult bulldogs can weigh anywhere from 45 to 55 pounds, however, each dog's ideal weight varies depending on frame size. Learn to body score your dog so you can monitor the fat cover over the dog's rib and backbone, and decrease their ration if necessary. Talk to your vet about how much your pet should weigh. Your bulldog should receive a healthy balance of protein, carbs, fats, vitamins, and minerals. There are many commercial dog foods available which can satisfy your dog, and some dog foods that are designed specifically for bulldogs. Look for a dog food that is nutritious and ask your vet if you have specific concerns about what your dog is eating. Feed your dog both food and water out of stainless steel bowls. Do not use plastic. If your bulldog is overweight, it may have heart, hip, and breathing problems later in life. You can keep its weight down by feeding it only moderate meals and providing opportunities for regular light exercise like going for walks at the park, or romps at the local dog park. Feed your bulldog small kibbles so that it eats slowly. This will prevent both overeating and gas. Preheat your oven to degrees Fahrenheit and mince the apple into small pieces. Combine the apple bits, water, oatmeal, and cinnamon into a dough by mixing together in a large mixing bowl. Place individual spoonfuls of the dough on an ungreased baking sheet spaced about two inches apart. Place the eighth of a cup of flour in a small bowl. Rub the bottom of a flat-bottomed cup in the flour and stamp the spoonfuls of dough down on the baking sheet. Bake for fifteen minutes, then remove and flip each apple cinnamon drop over. Bake for another fifteen minutes. Then, reduce heat and bake for thirty minutes at degrees Fahrenheit. There are many foods that humans find yummy but are toxic to bulldogs. For instance, grapes, raisins, beer, raw bread dough, chocolate or anything caffeinated, garlic, and onions should never be consumed by dogs. Foods that are nonfatal but may irritate your bulldog include peas, beans, milk, and fatty or spicy foods. Please be sure to provide many chew toys to help with this transitional period. Cow hooves can be found at many pet stores and are recommended. Stay away from pig ears and cheap rawhide, and "greenies," as these can cause severe diarrhea, bloat, and are a choking hazard. For instance, keep an eye out for diarrhea if you change your pup's food. If your bulldog develops diarrhea then stop all food for 12 hours. If it persists for more than 24 hours, contact your veterinarian immediately to prevent dehydration. Puppies can dehydrate very rapidly so you need to take it seriously when diarrhea occurs. Dogs can pick up some unwanted guests: ticks, fleas, mites, lice, and intestinal worms. Your dog can be the perfect host for these pests if regular treatment for these nasty pests is not given. Your veterinarian is the best source of knowledge for the local bugs that bug the local dog population and how to prevent these pests. Heartworm is a widespread disease present spread by mosquitoes throughout most of the United States. There is a treatment for heartworm, but it is expensive and takes a toll physically on the dog and can take months to combat. This is especially important for dogs that spend a lot of time outside, that live on farms, or that hunt, as they are at increased risk of contracting this tick-borne disease. Puppies will generally have a first veterinary visit at the age of six weeks by the person who has the mother dog. The veterinarian will examine the puppies to make sure there are no hernias, heart, lung, or eye or ear problems in any of the pups. At 9 weeks, and then again at 12 weeks, the de-wormer and distemper vaccines will be repeated. Then these can be given once a year or on a schedule determined by you and your veterinarian. Lowell Ackerman. This vaccination is required by many communities. There can sometimes be severe penalties if your dog is not rabies vaccinated especially if the dog bites a person or another pet. As your dog ages, more frequent examinations will need to be given. Twice yearly examination will catch medical issues before they become big problems. Older dogs frequently suffer from arthritis and heart disease just like elderly humans. There are effective and safe treatments that can help your older dog live reasonably pain-free and pleasant golden years. It is important to spay females or neuter male your puppy. In addition to various health benefits for the dog decreased chances of certain tumors and infections , there is a big societal benefit in the decreased number of unwanted dogs. Microchipping is also encouraged in case your dog ever becomes lost. The inner ear part of the ear is normally white or darker colored, usually corresponding to the color of the dog's coat, so look for discoloring. The puppy's ears should also not smell nor have any discharge in the ear or on the flap. The ear should be free of debris, dirt, or parasites, like ticks or mites. Any of the following are abnormal: [9] X Trustworthy Source American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Leading organization dedicated to the prevention of animal cruelty Go to source Scratching or pawing the ear. Shaking the head excessively. If in doubt, or if you suspect an ear infection, have your veterinarian look in the ear using an otoscope to examine the eardrum. Never stick a q-tip or similar type of product into the ear canal. You will not be able to see the entire ear canal and should not try to put anything down there. Never use human toothpaste on a dog; only use dental toothpaste made for dogs. The fluoride in human toothpaste is poisonous to dogs and can cause serious health problems. Place a little puppy toothpaste on your fingertip and let your puppy lick it off. The next day put it on your finger and rub it along the outer gums. Then try to put a little on a dog toothbrush, let the puppy lick it then run the toothbrush along the outer edges of the teeth and gums. Only the outer part against the cheeks needs to be brushed. Even with regular tooth brushing, dogs may need dental cleanings once in a while. Plaque and bacteria can build up under the gum line causing problems there or in the roots of the teeth. Just like with their human owners, regular mouth examinations by their doggy dentist should be done once a year. The English Bulldog — Quite a Chap! The English Bulldog can be expected to have certain traits: Affectionate, easygoing, and lovable Quiet—not much of a barker Good with kids and other pets An excellent guard dog, courageous and dependable Adaptable to a wide variety of living conditions Outgoing and friendly personality You may also these characteristics in your bully buddy: Can be gassy and drool a lot Makes a lot of snorting, snuffling, and wheezing noises, and she may snore Can become overweight easily if not exercised regularly Can be rambunctious and rowdy, especially as a puppy Sensitive, matures slowly Can be possessive of toys and food, tending to show dominance She is an intelligent and dependable companion that forms close human bonds. With early socialization and consistent leadership , she is a social and cheerful addition to any family. The modern Bulldog, with a heavy, thickset, low body and massive head, originated in England after the elimination of bull-baiting in .The Old English Bulldog was crossed with the Pug to create a more docile and affectionate family pet. The Bulldog retained its protective and fearless nature, but aggressive and ferocious tendencies were removed from the breed. Bulldogs serve as popular mascots, representing strength in the face of adversity for the US Marine Corps and more than 30 US Universities. Bulldogs are famous for their gentle nature, fondness of children, and clownish antics. The Bulldog is a generally healthy breed with an average lifespan of years. That is why we have summarized the health concerns we will be discussing with you over the life of your Bulldog. By knowing about health concerns specific to Bulldogs, we can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks. That does not mean your dog will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen in Bulldogs to give you an idea of what may come up in her future. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for Bulldogs. At the end of the article, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your English Bulldog looking and feeling her best. And unfortunately, your Bulldog is more likely than other dogs to have problems with her teeth. It starts with tartar build-up on the teeth and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. Infections Bulldogs are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections — the same ones that all dogs can get — such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination , which we will recommend based on the diseases we see in our area, her age, and other factors. Obesity Obesity can be a significant health problem in Bulldogs. It is a serious disease that may cause or worsen joint problems, metabolic and digestive disorders, back pain and heart disease. Instead, give her a hug, brush her fur or teeth, play a game with her, or perhaps take her for a walk. Everything from fleas and ticks to ear mites can infest her skin and ears. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms , and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Bulldog is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. For example, if your pet needs hip X-rays or a puppy tooth extracted, this would be a good time. This is convenient for you and easy for your friend. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions for common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Genetic Predispositions for Bulldogs Bone and Joint Problems A number of different musculoskeletal problems have been reported in Bulldogs. While it may seem overwhelming, each condition can be diagnosed and treated to prevent undue pain and suffering. Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Surgery is sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. Keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering! When Bulldog puppies are allowed to grow too quickly, the cartilage in their joints may not attach to the bone properly. This problem is known as osteochondritis dissecans or OCD. If this occurs, surgery may be required to fix the problem. Feed a large-breed puppy diet rather than an adult or a regular puppy diet. Weigh your puppy every three to four weeks. The cranial cruciate ligament is one of the four tough bands of tissue that hold each knee together. A torn cranial cruciate ligament is a common injury in active dogs, which includes your English Bulldog. Usually surgical correction is done to stabilize the knee and help prevent crippling arthritis. Physical therapy and multimodal pain management are necessary to get the best outcome. Keeping him at the right weight, feeding a high-quality diet, and avoiding too much twisting of the knees like playing Frisbee are key in avoiding this painful injury. Spinal Deformities Bulldogs are more likely than other canines to be born with spinal deformities a condition called hemivertebrae , which may lead to spinal cord damage, instability, or disability. Unfortunately, Bulldogs can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! We will evaluate his eyes at every examination to look for any signs of concern. Distichiasis is a condition caused by extra hairs that grow inside of the eyelid and rub on the surface of the eye. This is one of the most commonly inherited diseases in dogs, and your Bulldog is more likely than other dogs to develop this painful condition. If untreated, these abnormal hairs can cause corneal ulcers and chronic eye pain. Several treatment options are available, and the prognosis is good once the hairs have been permanently removed. Entropion is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea surface of the eyeball. This is an extremely irritating and painful condition that can ultimately lead to blindness. It can happen in any dog breed; however, your Bulldog is especially at risk for this heritable disorder. Surgical correction is usually successful if performed early. Dry eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS, is common in Bulldogs. The tear glands no longer produce enough tears to keep the eye moist, which results in sore, itchy eyes and infections. Symptoms include a thick discharge, squinting, pawing at the eye, or a dull, dry appearance of the eye. This is a painful condition; please call us immediately if you notice any of these signs. Dogs have a third eyelid that contains a gland that produces about one-third of the fluid that bathes the eye. If the gland is sore or swollen, it looks like a red blob in the corner of the eye. This condition is called cherry eye, and it can occur very suddenly in one or both eyes. If this happens to him, we may treat it with ointment first, but surgery is often the best option. Bladder or Kidney Stones There are a few different types of stones that can form in the kidney or in the bladder, and Bulldogs are more likely to develop them than other breeds. Call us immediately! Respiratory Distress Syndrome This disease, also known as brachycephalic syndrome, affects dogs with a short nose, like your Bulldog. As a consequence, the soft palate the soft part at the back of the roof of the mouth , is too long and hangs down into the airway. The nostrils are often too small, and sometimes the trachea, or windpipe, is narrow and undersized. All of these things lead to a narrow and obstructed airway. Many of these dogs can barely breathe! Watch for exercise intolerance, loud breathing, coughing, bluish gums, or fainting. With his short nose, he is also more likely to develop other problems, such as flatulence from excessive air intake, pneumonia from aspirating food, or heat stroke. In severe cases, surgical correction may be recommended. Bleeding Disorders There are several types of inherited bleeding disorders that occur in dogs. They range in severity from very mild to very severe. Many times a pet seems normal until a serious injury occurs or surgery is performed, and then severe bleeding can result. Reproductive Difficulties Breeds with a large head and small pelvis are more prone to difficulties during the birthing process. Her pelvis is just too small to pass puppies and a C-section is often required for her health and that of her puppies. If you are interested in breeding your English Bulldog, speak with us first. We can help you make an informed decision based on body conformation of both sire and dam. Heart Disease Bulldogs are prone to multiple types of heart disease , which can occur both early and later in life. Veterinary dental care and weight control go a long way in preventing heart disease. Multiple Skin Problems Your English Bulldog is susceptible to different kinds of skin infections and diseases. One of them is caused by yeast Malassezia dermatitis. When it infects the ears, it causes itching, redness, and an accumulation of brown waxy discharge. On the skin, it leads to greasy, hairless areas, especially on the neck and throat, with a characteristic odor. Another common skin disease called seborrhea can cause dry, flaky skin or greasy, oily skin. These diseases make your pet itchy and uncomfortable. The earlier you call to have his skin problems checked, the less likely it is that you will end up caring for an itchy, bald, smelly dog. Mange Demodex is a microscopic mite that lives in the hair follicles of dogs. All dogs have them. In mild cases, pet owners may notice a few dry, irritated, hairless lesions. These often occur on the face or feet and may or may not be itchy. Secondary skin infections may occur. Prompt veterinary care is important to keep the disease from getting out of hand. Many pets seem to outgrow the problem, while others require lifelong management. Laryngeal Paralysis Older Bulldogs may develop this disease, in which the vocal cords become paralyzed and hang down into the airway. Watch for noisy breathing, especially when exercising or in hot, humid weather. In severe cases a pet can collapse and have difficulty breathing. Mild cases can be managed with changes at home and possibly medication. Cancer Cancer is a leading cause of death in older dogs. Your English Bulldog will likely live longer than many other breeds and therefore is more prone to get cancer in his golden years. Many cancers are cured by surgically removing them, and some types are treatable with chemotherapy. Early detection is critical! Dental Abnormalities Teeth abnormalities are often genetically induced and are relatively common in dogs, especially in purebred dogs like your Bulldog. An overbite or underbite is called a malocclusion, or a bad bite. Oligodontia is a condition where only a few teeth are present. Misaligned teeth can also occur and cause lots of problems, but can usually be corrected with braces or extractions. Yes, dogs can get braces! Taking Care of Your Bulldog at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your English Bulldog live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. She has low grooming needs. Brush her coat as needed, at least weekly. Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. Her deep wrinkles need to be cleaned and dried often to prevent infections. As an adult she can have a tendency to be lazy, so you must ensure she receives adequate exercise by providing a daily walk. She is sensitive to temperature extremes; avoid any prolonged exposure and be very alert to the signs of heat stress. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease, or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help, and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your Bulldog needs help. They require regular grooming, especially if they have a curly coat. They are prone to some health problems, such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Overall, Labradoodles are wonderful dogs that make great companions for people of all ages. If you are looking for a friendly, intelligent, and hypoallergenic dog, a Labradoodle may be a good choice for you. Labradoodle History Wally Conron, who was in charge of the breeding program for the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia, purposefully crossbred a Standard Poodle and Labrador Retriever in to develop the Labradoodle as a hypoallergenic guide dog. The first cross produced Sultan, a dog with a hypoallergenic coat, aptitude, intelligence, and personality suitable for being an effective guide dog. Sultan worked successfully with a woman in Hawaii. Other breeders saw the merit of crossing these two breeds, and the Labradoodle quickly rose in popularity like its Labrador Retriever parent. These dogs are often produced by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle, but multigenerational breeding has begun in an attempt to produce a viable and recognizable breed. The Australian Labradoodle Association and the International Australian Labradoodle Association are taking steps to move this designer breed into registered breed status in the next few years. These groups have made great efforts to bring breeders together so that they are working to achieve the same standards through multigenerational breeding. Labradoodle Size The Labradoodle comes in three size variations, depending on the size of the Poodle used for the first-generation breeding. The three sizes are Standard, Medium, and Miniature. The Standard Labradoodle should be 22 to 24 inches in height for a male and 21 to 23 inches in height for a female, while both can range in weight from 50 to 65 pounds. The Medium Labradoodle should be 18 to 20 inches high for a male and 17 to 19 inches high for a female, with both weighing from 30 to 45 pounds. The average size for a Miniature Labradoodle is between 14 to 16 inches and 15 to 25 pounds. All of that said, there is a lot of variation in Labradoodle sizes. Some can be smaller or larger than expected. Labradoodle Personality The Labradoodle is an intelligent dog who can make the ideal family pet if properly trained. They are friendly and accept and treat everyone like their best friend. They can be gentle, but they can also be joyful, showing their happiness through exuberant jumping and playing. They also tend to be easygoing, since the Labradoodle was bred not to be aggressive. Temperament is affected by a number of factors, including heredity, training, and socialization. Puppies with nice temperaments are curious and playful, willing to approach people and be held by them. Meeting siblings, parents, or other relatives of the dog is also helpful for evaluating what a puppy will be like when they grow up. Socialization helps ensure that your Labradoodle puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Enrolling them in a puppy kindergarten class is a great start. Inviting visitors over regularly, and taking them to busy parks, stores that allow dogs, and on leisurely strolls to meet neighbors will also help them polish their social skills. Here are a few conditions to watch out for: Ear Infections: These can plague Labradoodles because of their floppy ears. The ears trap moisture and should be regularly checked. X-ray screening is the most certain way to diagnose the problem. Either way, arthritis can develop as the dog ages. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Elbow Dysplasia : Similar to hip dysplasia, this is also a degenerative disease. The disease varies in severity: the dog could simply develop arthritis, or they could become lame. Treatment includes surgery, weight management, medical management, and anti-inflammatory medication. It can cause mild or severe seizures that may show themselves as unusual behavior—such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding—or even by falling down, limbs rigid, and losing consciousness. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Allergies: Allergies are a common ailment in dogs, and the Labradoodle is no exception. Treatment varies according to the cause and may include dietary restrictions, medications, and environmental changes. Diabetes Mellitus: This is a disorder in which the body cannot regulate blood sugar levels. The dog will lose weight because food is not being used efficiently. Symptoms of diabetes are excessive urination and thirst, increased appetite, and weight loss. Diabetes can be controlled by diet and the administration of insulin. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA : This is a family of eye diseases that involves the gradual deterioration of the retina. Early in the disease, affected dogs become night-blind; they lose sight during the day as the disease progresses. Many affected dogs adapt well to their limited or lost vision, as long as their surroundings remain the same. Hypothyroidism : This is a disorder of the thyroid gland. It is treated with medication and diet. They require about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day and would do better with a fenced yard in which to expel some energy. Some Labradoodles, especially in the first generation, can require even more exercise. The Labradoodle makes an excellent jogging companion but also needs some time off-leash to burn off steam. The Labradoodle is an intelligent and eager-to-please dog. Training should be easy as long as consistency and positive reinforcement are the methods. Socialize them from puppyhood, since they tend to hurl themselves headlong into canine situations without regard to the feelings of other dogs. This can lead to some problems if the unknown dog is aggressive. Despite their activity levels, a Labradoodle can adjust to living in suburban or city environments and can do well in rural settings. A crate is also a place where they can retreat for a nap. Crate training at a young age will help your Labradoodle accept confinement if they ever needs to be boarded or hospitalized. Never stick your Labradoodle in a crate all day long, however. Labradoodle Feeding Recommended daily amount: 1 to 2. NOTE: How much your adult dog eats depends on their size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. Keep your Labradoodle in good shape by measuring their food and feeding them twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. First, look down at them. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on their back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see their ribs without having to press hard. For more on feeding your Labradoodle, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Labradoodle Coat Color And Grooming Although a Labradoodle can have one of a range of coat types, the desired length is four to six inches. They have a single coat with hair ranging from straight to loose curls. There are three types of texture: The Hair coat, which is similar to fur in shedding breeds, is the least popular. Hair coats shed and usually have a normal doggy odor. This coat is seen in first generations, although breeders try to avoid it. The Fleece coat has a silky texture often described as an Angora goat texture. This coat ranges from straight to wavy. Labradoodles are considered to be non- to low shedders, especially those with a Fleece or Wool coat. Hair coats tend to shed just as they do in other breeds, ranging from very low to average shedding. The Labradoodle comes in a wide variety of colors. They can also have parti-colored coats, which consist of brindles, phantom, patched, or sable colors. Grooming requirements vary depending on the length and type of coat the dog has. Generally speaking, you can expect to brush a Labradoodle about once or twice per week. Some can be clipped or trimmed every six to eight weeks to keep the coat easy to maintain. Like Labs, Labradoodles can be prone to ear infections, so take a little extra time caring for their ears. Dry and clean them after a swim, and check them once a week for dirt, redness, or a bad odor that can indicate an infection. Then wipe them out weekly with a cotton ball dampened with gentle, pH-balanced ear cleaner to prevent problems. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath. Dog toenails have blood vessels in them, and if you cut too far you can cause bleeding—and your dog may not cooperate the next time they see the nail clippers come out. Handle their paws frequently—dogs are touchy about their feet—and look inside their mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. Labradoodle Children And Other Pets The Labradoodle does well with children and can be an affectionate and gentle companion for any child. They can also be exuberant and might knock down smaller children, but they will love them with all their heart. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Labradoodles usually get along well with other dogs and pets. Like most dogs, they need training and socialization for optimum success at living with and visiting other animals. Labradoodle Rescue Groups Labradoodles are often brought home without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. Many end up in the care of shelters or rescues because of this. It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Labradoodles because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Labrador Retriever or Poodle breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have both health and behavioral issues. More Info For You. From their friendly, playful personalities to their intelligent, eager-to-please natures, there are plenty of advantages to owning labradoodles. What Are Labradoodle Puppies? Not only was this new breed low-shedding and hypoallergenic, but it was also incredibly friendly and intelligent. Their sociable, affectionate natures make labradoodle puppies great for new owners and experienced pet parents alike. Most labradoodles require around 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day, which can be easily fulfilled by walks or games. Intelligence: Thanks to their poodle parentage, labradoodle puppies are highly intelligent. Their natural curiosity and eagerness to please makes them fairly easy to train which is why labradoodles are common candidates for therapy dogs. Most mother dogs give birth to anywhere from one to 12 puppies at a time, with the average being just a few pups around five to six. It can be hard to single one puppy out — each one is adorable! Here are a few important factors you should look out for. Size Every new pet owner wants to go home with a healthy puppy. If a puppy is much smaller than its littermates, it may have a congenital or genetic issue that could affect its lifespan. On the flip side, if a puppy is the largest of the litter, it may be stealing food, which could mean it has trouble listening to commands. Personality The way a labradoodle puppy acts around its siblings and mother dog can be very indicative of its personality. When examining a litter, watch how the puppies interact with one another. A withdrawn, shy pup that keeps to itself may have aggression and biting issues in the future. An aggressive, independent pup that bullies other dogs may be reluctant to listen to commands. Meanwhile, a friendly, relaxed pup that gets along with its littermates will likely be easy to train. Playfulness The way a labradoodle puppy acts around its littermates can tell you a lot about its personality. But what about the way it acts around you? As you greet the puppies, observe how they behave. The puppies that rush forward and are interested in playing are more likely to be sociable and friendly. See if any puppies roll over on their backs — pets that exhibit this behavior tend to be more easygoing and trusting, which will come in handy while training. Gender For many prospective owners, the gender of their new puppy is probably inconsequential. However, if you already have a dog at home, gender may be an important factor to consider. According to many experts, male and female canines tend to get along better than two dogs of the same sex. Thus, if you have a female dog at home, you should consider getting a male pup and vice versa. Appearance Many prospective dog owners have a certain look in mind when searching for a new pet. For example, some people may want a puppy with a solid-colored coat, while others like multicolored pups. If you have any appearance preferences, look for a puppy that meets those expectations. Generally, you can expect labradoodle siblings to look pretty similar. However, there may be some slight differences — for example, one may have a traditional, golden curly coat, while another has a few spots of white. The only thing you can count on for sure is that all the labradoodles will share a distinguishable curly coat. Legs: Is your desired puppy walking and running normally? Any limping indicates a paw or leg injury. If this spot is larger than the size of a dime, the puppy may experience bone problems in the future. Stomach: Check to see if there are any protrusions or hernias around the belly area. Moreover, the puppy should not be scratching its eyes and ears excessively. Reputable breeders should answer your questions thoroughly and do everything they can to help you find your perfect match. Here are some good questions to ask. How Does the Puppy Behave in General? No puppy acts the same way throughout the entire day. The breeder will let you know if the puppy is a good match or if another puppy might be better for you. Before you take any puppies home, try to get some more specific information about them. For example, you could ask what activities a puppy enjoys. If you exercise frequently and want a labradoodle puppy that can keep up with your excursions, the breeder can direct you to an active puppy. On the flip side, if you prefer to stay in, the breeder can introduce you to a calmer, lower-energy puppy. For instance, if the breeder says a puppy likes spending time with people and learning new tricks, it suggests that the puppy will be more responsive to training. What Do the Parents Look Like? Generally, standard labradoodle puppies grow to be anywhere from 20 to 25 inches in height. You can get a better idea of what your new labradoodle puppy is going to look like by observing the parents. For example, if the parents seem too large, you might want to try another litter. In some cases, you may be able to meet the parents of your new labradoodle puppy in person. Are the Puppies Health-Tested? For example, ear discharge could indicate an infection, while a dull coat suggests skin allergies. Make sure the breeder health-tests all their labradoodles for common puppy diseases. Get a Labradoodle Today! There are probably plenty of healthy, friendly puppies within a litter that would fit well in your home. What do you need to do to prepare? Here are some things you will need to have that very first night. The Crate You will need a crate that the puppy can stand up and turn around in. A crate is one of the pet carriers used to transport dogs on the plane. You see them in pet shops. The crate must be big enough but not too big. A Labradoodle puppy from us has been introduced to sleeping in a crate. Many puppies find it a safe refuge and a great sleeping spot. We will let you know about your puppy when she is ready to come home. A crate might not look as adorable as the pink fluffy bed with princess embroidery but to your new puppy her crate can be the equivalent of having a room of her own. When you want your puppy to be safe while you spend a couple of hours shopping, or your puppy needs to nap the crate is a good place for puppy to be. If you are going to leave puppy for an extended daytime period a pen is a better choice than a crate. Puppy can go to the bathroom, have a drink and chew toys in a pen. Hugo in a crate of his own choosing Our puppies have been introduced to a crate. If you use your crate as a sleeping and napping space at home their crate becomes their own space. We have them spending the night in a crate before they go home to you. Our puppies often fly to their new homes and they are always welcomed by airlines because they are used to their crates. Can you imagine the trauma puppies who are not crate trained experience when they are put into a strange box and taken away from home? To our puppies the crate is their own little place and they are comfortable there. If your puppy arrives and tells you she no longer likes her crate put it where she can see you. Put her in it for short periods of time for naps. With a new environment she can be feeling strange but she will come round as all of our puppies nap and travel in crates. Pretty Or Practical Even if your plan is that Fluffy should sleep in the bed with you, her time spent in her crate will help with potty training. When nap-time is over take her quickly outside and she will go to the bathroom in the appropriate spot. Without her crate she will wake up on her frilly pink cushion, take a few steps and pee in the dining room. If she falls happily asleep at your feet or on a cushion just watch and be mindful. The minute she wakes up she will need to pee. You will both get in to a rhythm that suits you. We have introduced your puppy to appropriate places to go potty but puppy is still a baby. They are far too young and bladder and brain are not properly connected. A soft bed in the kitchen and any other room where you spend time is a great idea for puppy. Puppies will drag their toys and chewies over to this spot and it is where they are close but not right under foot. We have them in the kitchen, where we are on the computer and where we watch TV. Puppies chew. It is a fact of life. We have big smoked bones and lots of other chew toys available. Like little children they like variety. Rather than scolding him for chewing the chair rung or the woodwork offer him something even better. Ours like kongs with peanut butter inside. All kinds of dental chews. A warning though, things with bright green or red dye are never good! We like a wire crate for the car and we have a travel crate for seeping. A tin of pumpkin for tummy emergencies If you are coming to us to pick up puppy remember to bring a water dish for the car and a chew toy for the crate. He will beg you for a big, gigantic meal! Feed him very little as his tummy will be easily upset. His little system will take a while to adjust to new water, new surroundings, even new little organisms in the dirt in his new backyard. Have a tin of plain pumpkin on hand should he have some diarrhea. A big scoop of pumpkin with some kibble will help the problem. That is irritation from the diarrhea. Give the problem a couple of days before you fly to the vet. Make sure your puppy is drinking lots of water. We used to give Pepto Bismal for upset tummies but they have changed the formula and it is no longer safe for dogs. However, he is not completely protected. Your puppy will have a record telling you when his next our of a series of three vaccines should be. We used to be able to give two vaccinations but veterinary medicine has changed its protocol and does not administer the first vaccine until eight weeks. Your puppy is completely protected two weeks after her third vaccine. That is the day she can walk in the park! That being said puppy should meet as many people and go to as many noisy places as possible. Take her to sports events, to school and to all the places you go. Labradoodle Safety Tips Puppies should get used to the car even if they are not going anywhere special. However, they tend to want to leap out every time you do. This can lead to a terrible accident. Secure your puppy in a crate before you get out of the car. Be very careful when you are driving your new puppy home for the first time because everything is strange to her. Puppies love to play. Invite a puppy to your house for some puppy play but take off their collars. Accidents can happen with little mouths and little collars. Puppies are babies who put absolutely everything into their mouths from passing bugs to live electrical wires. I find I need to be in the same room as a puppy unless he is confined. A little water, five chew toys and a mat makes a nice little spot where he can be while I am not paying attention. When I do work around the house I just have appropriate chew toys in every room and keep on encouraging their use. Mercifully, young puppies sleep a lot. Labradoodle Food A puppy lives to eat! Although an older dog might be a picky eater a puppy always behaves as if he is starving. Choosing the right food for your puppy is important and we have found all those little kibbles look pretty much alike. The dog foods we are familiar with are the brands we see on TV. It is sold in the supermarkets and these foods are generally poor quality. We are now feeding various very high quality foods made by Orijen, Acana and Go. We will send home a sample of exactly what we are feeding your puppy. Puppies have sensitive tummies so she might need to be weaned from one food to another if the food she is on is not available. We do not feed puppy food. The best way to find a new food is to go to Dog Food Analysis. This is a site run by food scientists. It will give you a chemical breakdown of the food and it will rate the food according to nutrition. After you have checked out the site go to a local pet store and ask them which nutritious, well rated food they have available. Good dog food is not cheap but it is a lot less expensive than the vet bills will be a few years down the road with a poor quality food. Some foods are the equivalent of feeding your children hot dogs every night. Multiple Dog Dinner Time We humans like to dine together. I used to love to see the little food bowls of our multiple dog household all lined up in the kitchen. If puppy is joining other dogs in your house feed them in separate rooms or feed the puppy in her crate. It is a good thing for humans to be around dogs when they eat but they are too intent on seeing who got something better to eat as a dog family. Liza's family having luncheon al fresco. In a few days all of their meals will be taken separately. If you have your heart set on diamonds wait until Gigi arrives and take her into a pet shop to purchase a collar. She will need one that fits exactly right. Too large and she can easily back out of it if she is nervous or afraid. We like a harness or loopy for walking. A harness is a great investment for puppy because it will keep her safe while you are out in the world. Buy a good sturdy leash with a good clasp that will fit through the collar ring. Trainers do not recommend retractable leashes. Puppy needs to know exactly when he is at the end of the leash. When you are training your puppy you will want to have more control over the situation than you can have with a retractable leash. A Plan For Training Once your puppy has been settled into your home it is time to continue with puppy training. Learn how to continue training at home, with kids and how best to care for your puppy. Their adorable curly fur and expressive faces make you want to cuddle them — and these little guys love nothing more than a good squish. The first example of this type of dog, called Sultan, went to live with a lady in Hawaii, where other breeders saw him as an inspiration and this is how Australian Labradoodle puppies started. Both the International Australian Labradoodles Association and the Australian Labradoodles Association of America are working hard to incorporate more intergenerational breeding so these dog breeders can register this type of dog as a purebred dog. Its gentle, obedient and intelligent personality combined with a hypoallergenic coat make it ideal for family members with allergies, but it also makes an excellent service or therapy dog. Labradoodle Size The size of labradoodle puppies for sale directly relates to the size of their parents and which generation of breed Labradoodle breeders chose. The larger the puppies, the larger the adult dog will be, and the faster their growth will be coming out of the puppy stage. A standard labradoodle puppy will weigh from pounds by the time it reaches two months of age. By a year old, it will have grown dramatically to up to 80 pounds, depending on the size of its parents. Medium Labradoodles occupy a spectrum of sizes between standard and mini Labradoodles, with the specifics depending heavily on the details of the breeding pair that birthed them and the breeding program they come from. Labradoodle Puppies Temperament While Labradoodle breeders originally bred the Australian Labradoodles as therapy dogs, their fun, friendly personalities made them popular pets. Now you can find these sociable dogs in homes across the globe. Here are some of the top personality traits of our Labradoodle puppies for sale. They tend to do best in active households where they can work off all that pent-up energy. Obstacle courses: Set up an obstacle course for your dog using household items. Scavenger hunt: Creating a scavenger hunt for your canine is a great way to exercise its body and brain. In general, Labradoodles need anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day. You can also enroll them later at a Labradoodle puppy alumni school for proper training. Friendliness What makes Labradoodles the perfect puppy compare to other dog breeds is their ability to get along with just about anyone. They inherit this trait from their Labrador retriever parent, a breed also known for its outgoing nature. You can trust your labradoodle to form friendships with everyone, from children and older adults to strangers and other puppies. Thanks to their affectionate, sociable personalities, Labradoodles make great pets for first-time owners, families, or anyone looking for a companion. Intelligence Thanks to their poodle parent breeds, Labradoodles are incredibly intelligent dogs. Because Labradoodles are intelligent, they often crave mental stimulation. Labradoodle Puppies Grooming Our Labradoodle puppies for sale have a variety of coat textures that dog owners enjoy, but in general, their low shedding coat needs brushing at least twice a week. Not only does this keep them tangle-free but it also removes excess debris from their coat, keeping them fresh and hygienic. Regularly trim the hair around their eyes and in between their paws to prevent these problem areas from causing irritation. Pooches with fleece coats tend to have longer fur and benefit the most from going to a professional groomer — although every dog loves getting pampered once in a while. bernedoodle puppy size chart - Temperament and Behavioral Characteristics Having a cheerful and loving disposition, they are amicable and get along well with people of all ages beginning from children to the elderly folk as well as other dogs and pets. They enjoy being in the company of their family members, also showing eagerness to please and satisfy their owners. In fact, leaving them alone for prolonged period may affect their personality in a negative way. They are great attention seekers loving to be noticed by their masters always—a quality that might compel them to be jealous of the little ones in the family. The barking trait of the American Eskimo dog and Poodle is highly inherent in this breed making them let out a howl the moment they spot an unfamiliar face, hear any strange noise or are suffering from pangs of loneliness. Though they have a good compatibility with children, it is essential to teach the kids to handle them with care, thus requiring an adult supervision during their interaction with these dogs. Just like its American Eskimo parent, this breed too enjoys cold weather, while some of them might also have fun playing in the snow. Care Exercise They do well in homes and apartments provided they are exercised on a regular basis. Taking them for a brisk walk or engaging them in exciting games would be helpful in ensuring a healthy physical and mental development. However, do not over exercise them as they tend to get exhausted after thirty minutes of running. Grooming Though the American Eskimo-Poodle mix sheds less, its coat should regularly be brushed to prevent the curls from getting tangled. A slicker brush would be appropriate for this purpose. Bathe your pet only when required, also keep its teeth, eyes and ears clean to check infection of any kind. Trimming and clipping of the coat should be occasional depending on the hair type. In fact, those with a wavy, long and curly hair would require a haircut quite frequently mainly during the winters in comparison to the rest. Health Problems Though it is not known to suffer from any serious health concerns, it might have some of the ailments of its parents such as hip dysplasia, luxating patella and Progressive Retinal Atrophy American Eskimo or epilepsy, thyroid problems and gastric dilatation-volvulus Poodle. It also has chances of contracting eye infections at frequent intervals. The Eskipoo puppies should be imparted with socialization and obedience training to help them develop a pleasing personality. The trainer should be firm and patient enough to handle this active breed well. You can also teach your pet to housebreak and help him get rid of separation anxiety if it is too high in him. Feeding It is essential to provide the Eskipoo with dry dog food divided into equal meals. Apart from this make sure you give him a well-balanced diet having sufficient amount of carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and other minerals. Is the Eskipoo right for you? The Eskipoo dog breed is a cross between the American Eskimo and Poodle. These dogs are small in size, with round eyes that are mostly blue, with a short black muzzle, floppy ears, and a dense coat. Due to its happy temperament and good nature, it has been a popular pet choice for all ages. The Eskipoo is believed to have come into existence in the late 20th century. However, little is known as who first bred the Eskipoo and when. Some believed it could first be traced back to Egyptian and Roman times, while some researchers believe they originally came from Germany. What does an Eskipoo look like? An Eskipoo is a small-sized dog with a round head. It has a floppy and large triangular poodle-style ears and a black nose. Its eyes can either be brown or blue. First, you can get an Eskipoo with a short and smooth curly coat like a Poodle. Second, you can have an Eskipoo with a long and thick coat like an American Eskimo. Most of the time, their coat is medium-length and could either be quite dense or way with a double layer. Since they often have a dense coat, this breed is more suitable for colder environments. The Eskipoo is also available in many coat colors. Below is the rundown of their available colors. White: This is the most common color available for an Eskipoo. Black: You can also see Eskipoos with black-colored coats. Some have pure black color, while some can have tints of blue or red. Brown: They also come in a variety of shades of brown that range from light to dark brown. Cream: They also come in light-off white or deep tan color of cream. Grey: Some Eskipoos have grey coats, or sometimes their coat changes to grey color before they turn five years of age. What is the Eskipoo temperament? When you make an Eskipoo your pet, you can expect it to be affectionate, playful, energetic, and gentle. Because of their friendly and cheerful personality, they can be a great addition to your family. Their size makes them ideal for apartment, house, or condo living as long as they have adequate time to get sunshine and fresh air and go for an exercise outside. Additionally, their jolly and loving disposition makes them suitable for all ages, including elders and children. But always remember to supervise them if you let them play with children, especially the toddlers. Moreover, if you have other dogs in the household, the Eskipoo can easily get along with them, as long as you keep them socialized with each other. There is a downside, though, in their clingy nature. As a result, they can get bored and start chewing on your house furniture or bark excessively. This breed also tends to bark or howl at unfamiliar sights, faces, or sounds. But this can be resolved with proper training. Senior citizens or retirees who love a gentle yet fun-loving pooch and challenge themselves with moderate activity during the day can greatly benefit from the Eskipoo dog. Is an Eskipoo a good family dog? The Eskipoo is an incredible companion dog who will give you love, loyalty, and affection, making them a good family dog. Their playful nature makes them a joy to be around. They also do well with children. They like to lick your child in their little fingers and head and cuddle them. How big does Eskipoo get? Eskipoos can grow up to 9 and 16 inches .How much does Eskipoo weigh? They can weigh between 10 and 20 pounds 4. Does Eskipoo shed? Depending on their inherited traits from their parents, they can be curly and single-layered like the Poodle or fluffy and thick-layered like the American Eskimo. Sometimes, their coat is in between. Even so, to avoid tangling or matting their coats, you need to brush them frequently using a slicker brush. Moreover, Eskipoos rarely drools. But if they do excessive drooling, it may be a sign of a problem that needs medical attention from a veterinarian. How often should you bathe an Eskipoo? Once every 2 to 3 months is adequate; however, they often need brushing to keep their coats in good shape. The recommended brushing is between 4 to 5 times per week. What are the grooming requirements of an Eskipoo? As mentioned earlier, this breed is low maintenance. To take care of its coat, you need to brush it at least 4 to 5 times per week. The recommended brush to use is a soft brush and a wide-tooth comb. Again, bathing is only required once every 2 to 3 months. Only bathe them if dirt is visible in their coat. The reason for not bathing them all the time is to preserve any natural oil from being washed out, which keeps its coat naturally shiny. If it takes after its Poodle parent, you also need to bring it to a professional groomer every 2 to 3 months for a haircut. In terms of brushing their teeth, you should do it daily. Their nails, however, should be trimmed every two weeks. You should also regularly check their ears and eyes and remove any dirt around them to reduce any risks of infection. Does an Eskipoo bark a lot? Eskipoos are social dogs who love to be in the company of humans. They hate to be left alone and can become destructive to your belongings or bark excessively when this happens. They also bark a lot when they see unfamiliar faces, hear unusual sounds, or experience a different environment. But with proper training over time, this behavior can be changed or minimized. Are Eskipoo hypoallergenic? But, this is only true if they inherited the genes of their Poodle parent. If this is the case, prepare for some shedding. The shedding is most especially experienced in-between seasons. Having an American Eskimo dominant gene will give them a thicker coat and more hair to shed. If you have allergies, make sure you get the one whose genes are more dominant to its Poodle parent. Similarly, you can try to adopt it for a few days and see if your allergies respond to it. Since Eskipoo is a high-energy dog, they will require a healthy diet of excellent quality kibble. This breed is prone to having dental issues, so giving them dry kibble is strongly recommended to keep their teeth strong and healthy. You can also give them wet food if their dental issues make it impossible for them to chew dry kibble. Eskipoo behavior problems Generally, Eskipoos are great and lovely dogs to have when trained well. However, there are potential issues in their behavior when their training goes awry. Below are some of the most common behavioral problems in Eskipoos. Too much barking There is a potential behavioral problem with an Eskipoo barking a lot. This means their potential as apartment dogs can be limited. They have an innate ability to bark at the signs of trouble. Suffer from separation anxiety Eskipoos need attention most of the time. If left alone for a long period, they have the tendency to be depressed and have separation anxiety. This leads to them being destructive to your belongings. Stubborn Another thing you need to know about Eskipoos is their stubbornness. This breed wants to get things their way. Too Energetic This breed has so much energy, which means they need a lot of daily exercise and playtime. This means that you need to be ready to invest lots of time, affection, and energy to make them feel loved and maintain their well-being. Is Eskipoo easy to train? The potential issues stated above of the Eskipoos mean that owners may need to seek professional help, especially when these behavioral problems start to manifest. Training is important at an early age, especially in the areas of separation training and socialization. Eskipoos are people pleasers, which makes them easy to train. But they need a trainer who can teach them with patience and consistency. They respond very well to positive reinforcements. Hence, in training them, you should provide them with treats such as food and even vocal praises to reward them if they do a great job. These dogs are also pretty intelligent, adding to the ease it takes to train them. Their parents are both working dogs, which means they thrive when given a job to do. And often, they do a good job to please their owners. What is the average lifespan of Eskipoos? Eskipoos, on average, can live up to 10 to 13 years. What are the common health problems of Eskipoos? The average lifespan of an Eskipoo can be reduced, however, if they suffer from health problems. The following are the most common health problems of Eskipoos. This condition is a common occurrence among dogs, but smaller breeds are more affected. This condition can be treated with medication and physical therapy. But, in severe cases where your dog feels significant pain, surgery may be necessary. Cataracts As your Eskipoo age, it may develop cataracts as humans do. Unfortunately, no pill or eye drop can reverse the damage in the lens. Squamous cell carcinoma Squamous cell carcinoma is developed due to the lesions of the nail bed or toe of the dog. When the lesions get irritated, it may lead to some serious condition known as Squamous cell carcinoma. Only surgery can heal this condition. Epilepsy Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in dogs. Seizures often happen when the brain changes its activity, such as when the dog gets too excited for feeding or as they wake up or fall asleep. Exercise after eating increases its risk. And since Eskipoos are known to be hyperactive, they tend to develop this medical condition. How much does an Eskipoo cost? The cost of Eskipoos will always vary on several factors such as their breeder, the location, and of course, the supply and demand. If you live in a place where Eskipoos are popular but with only a few breeders, the price for each pup may increase, especially if you want a healthy and quality dog. Some breeders also charge more if an Eskipoo has rare characteristics such as having blue eyes or colors of apricots and browns. Where to buy or adopt an Eskipoo dog? If you want to be an Eskipoo owner, you can buy from reputable and trustworthy breeders. However, if you opt to find Eskipoos in rescue centers, your chances of getting them are high. Hence, they tend to abandon them and leave them in a rescue shelter. If you want to find an Eskipoo pup in a rescue shelter, you need to understand their personality and needs and think long if you have the commitment and ability to meet their needs. If you want to be an Eskipoo owner, the best places are the following websites. Lifespan Sociability You should know all there is to know about this mixed dog breed before deciding to buy one and introduce it to your household. There is no set price for these cute mixed breed dogs, but you can expect to spend quite a bit when it comes time to adopt one. The most important thing to keep in mind when shopping for an Eskapoo pup is health. This will make the price of your Eskapoo pup even higher. Veterinarian costs, pet essentials like food and water bowls, and accessories like toys and treats are also expenses that need to be considered. This is one of the things that makes them such great family dogs! They Handle Season Changes Well Due to the hypoallergenic and water-resistant characteristics of the Poodle and the thick double-coat of the American Eskimo, Eskapoos can handle cold and damp weather well. They are also built to deal with warmer weather, which makes them great four-season dogs. They Are Food Motivated This mixed breed is food motivated, making it easy to train them with the use of treats. Food will get them to do just about anything you want them to do, whether that means fetching your newspaper in the morning or sitting quietly by the door when a visitor enters your home. Their curiosity can get the best of them, at times but keeping them busy will minimize destruction within the house. A house with a fenced yard is ideal for these frisky dogs, but they can live in an apartment setting if they can walk and play outside regularly. This mixed breed can be easily trained, and they are always yearning to learn something new. Families that are regularly away from the house all day may not be the best fit for this dog. Their playful attitude makes them fun to be around, and their social personality makes it easy to introduce them to strangers. These dogs are alert and vocal, making them excellent watchdogs at home. They are loyal to their family members and will stay by your side at every opportunity. Are Eskapoos Good for Families? If they take more after their Poodle parent, they could have hypoallergenic qualities that family members with allergies can appreciate. They can also learn how to get along with cats, but they need to be trained not to chase them. A post shared by Andrey Bityukov a. Here is what you should know before adopting a new Eskapoo puppy of your own. They do tend to have sensitive digestive systems, so choosing a grain-free food will minimize the risk of constipation and nausea. After a year of age, you can switch to a quality food made for adults or all life stages. Your dog will expect a long walk every day, in addition to time playing fetch or doing another physical activity outdoors. After outdoor exercise, your Eskapoo should have no problem relaxing inside with the rest of the family. Interactive toys should be provided on rainy days and during times when your pooch needs to stay indoors more than usual. Obedience training can begin as early as about 2 months old , so you should start as soon as you bring your new pooch home. They need to practice obedience training throughout their lifetime to reinforce the behaviors that you expect of them. When older, Eskapoos can do well on the agility course, which offers exercise, mental stimulation, and a great opportunity to socialize with other dogs. If they take after their Poodle parent, they will likely need haircuts regularly to keep tangles and mats at bay. If your Eskapoo takes more after their American Eskimo parent, you can expect them to shed frequently and you will likely have to brush or comb them daily. But unfortunately, there are several serious conditions they are prone to that you should be aware of. Minor Conditions. Life Span Did You Know? These fluffy little dogs are affectionate and gentle. People tend to fall in love with their playful, energetic personalities. Although the Eskipoo is not currently recognized by the AKC, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations. These little dogs love to play, love to cuddle, and love nothing more than getting attention from their favorite humans. Their affectionate, gentle nature and playful, friendly personality make them a great fit for families. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they do tend to be open and friendly with strangers once introduced, they also tend to bark to alert you of people, animals, etc. Although they are high-energy dogs, Eskipoos are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in larger homes with fenced yards where they can run. Also, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. Because these small dogs bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not do well with long periods of time alone. This can also make them prone to separation anxiety if you do not work on this with them when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in an Eskipoo include luxating patella , diabetes, cataracts, Legg-Calve-Perthes, hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma, and eyelash abnormalities. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both of the parents, and about any health tests that have been done. Eskipoos are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. Although they can get bored easily, they tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. They thrive on positive praise and reward, and tend to work hard to gain attention from you. The Eskipoo coat still ranges from the curly Poodle coat to the longer, thicker American Eskimo coat. An American Eskimo coat will shed moderately year-round and heavier as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and the occasional bath is all this coat needs. Nail trims once or twice a month keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed help prevent ear infections. Daily dental care , like brushing with dog-friendly toothpaste, helps prevent dental diseases later in life. Although these dogs tend to be little, they are not couch potatoes at all. In fact, they are high-energy dogs that require walks, playtime, and some time to run every day to be happy and healthy. Thankfully, they also tend to be versatile and athletic dogs that are up for almost anything if it means spending more time with you. Just make sure puppies finish growing and developing, and you get vet approval, before you tackle more intense, higher-impact activities. A fully-grown Eskipoo usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Eskipoos generally live for years. An Eskipoo is also referred to as a Pookimo and an Eskapoo. Featured Eskipoo Article. Active families of all sorts; adaptable to apartments Temperament: Intelligent, Playful, Affectionate The Eskapoo inherits traits from both of their parents. You could have a dog that is very similar to a Poodle or nothing like one. They are usually medium-sized dogs, but their weight can vary widely. Most are the descendants of a Toy Poodle, but other types of Poodles can also be used. These dogs are pretty intelligent, which often makes them easy to train. They are active and require a bit of mental stimulation, though, so they can require more time from their owners. Because both of their parents are working dogs, they thrive when given a job to do. Many of them love water, taking after their Poodle ancestry. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Few breeders specialize in this breed. The large majority of breeders produce purebred dogs or one of the more popular mixed breeds. Most of the time, these puppies will be most common at shelters and rescues. Of course, the odds of a specific mixed breed showing up at an animal shelter near you are low. You may have to expand your search range and do a bit of travelling to get the dog you want. You may be able to locate a breeder or two that produce these puppies. However, this does mean that you have to tell them what to do. They need to work their brains and flex their intelligence. They are not dogs that you can leave alone for long periods. Great ways to keep them entertained include things like obedience training, puzzle toys, and canine sports. Setting up a miniature agility course in your backyard is a great way to keep them busy and entertained. On top of mental stimulation, these dogs need quite a bit of physical exercise as well. They work best for active families who have enough time to exercise these dogs properly. Barking and chewing are a common problem if they are not well taken care of. These dogs often keep their playfulness into adulthood. They often enjoy playtime over cuddling on the couch. They work best for families that would instead take a hike than a cuddle on the couch, as well. Generally, the Eskapoo is pretty calm and not extremely hyperactive — like some toy breeds. They do behave well inside and adapt to apartment living as long as their other needs are met. Without proper training, they can be a bit noisy. They will bark at people as they walk by and then love them the second they walk in the door. Active families with many people coming and going are often best, as this decreases the amount of time the dog is alone overall. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Their smaller size does lead to some difficulty with more minor children. This can lead to fear-based barking. One bad situation can lead to the dog not trusting small people for the foreseeable future. With the proper socialization, these dogs can get along with small children as long as they are supervised. They are great dogs for families with older children, especially if they are active and spend time romping around in a fenced-in backyard. They will happily follow children around and play, even well into their adult years. They are an excellent choice for elementary-aged children due to their smaller, manageable size. However, active families are best. They are good with dogs of all sorts as long as they are socialized at an early age. Like all dogs, they need to be introduced to other puppies starting at a young age to ensure that they know how to communicate with other canines appropriately. Otherwise, they will often be fearful of other dogs, which can cause aggression. However, when introduced to a wide variety of different breeds, they will often do just fine with smaller and larger dogs. Many of them are pretty pack-oriented and do best when they are with other dogs. They often have a pretty high prey drive, making them unsuitable for homes with cats and similar pets. They will chase these animals, especially since they have a high activity need. Of course, they will also chase other small pets, like rabbits. They can often stay healthy on a high-quality, commercially available dog food. Look for foods with high amounts of meat. The ingredient list of each food starts with the highest ingredient by weight and moves down from there. Check each ingredient list to ensure that the first few ingredients are meat. Of course, keep in mind the water content of the ingredients as well, which may artificially push them higher on the ingredient list. For instance, whole chicken contains a lot of water, which is removed while creating dry dog food. There may not be very much chicken in the food after considering the water content. The FDA has linked some heart problems to grain-free foods. However, anything is technically possible. They are very active dogs and work best in an active family. It is recommended that you plan on strenuous exercise at least an hour a day. This can be a long walk, job, or playtime. Many of these dogs love games like fetch, which can help wear them out without wearing you out. Training for some canine sports can also fulfill this need. Ample exercise is recommended. Otherwise, these dogs can exhibit destructive behaviors like digging and chewing. These dogs enjoy a fenced-in backyard, especially if you play games like fetch. However, they can adapt well to an apartment as long as their needs are met. A dog walker is almost required unless someone in the family is at home for much of the day and can take them on multiple walks. While these dogs do need lots of exercise, they cannot be put in a yard by themselves for an extended period. They need to be with their people. As people-oriented dogs, they can get a bit stir-crazy if they are isolated for long periods. They will learn commands quickly and obey them most of the time. They love obedience training and thrive in classes of all sorts. It is recommended that you enroll them in classes at a young age to challenge their mind and keep them mentally stimulated. Many train their dogs for canine sports like agility simply because they run out of ways to stimulate them otherwise mentally. These dogs make excellent therapy animals and can compete with success in just about any dog sport. The type of grooming they need primarily depends on what type of coat they have. However, most of them will have a high grooming need. Dogs with Poodle-like coats will need to be trimmed regularly by a groomer. Daily brushing is often required to prevent matting, even if your dog gets trimmer. A pin brush is often the best option for this, but it will depend mainly on the type of coat your dog has. Your dog may or may not shed. Some may shed a whole lot, while others will only shed a little bit. If your dog sheds, you will need to use a brush to remove much of the dead hair. They may shed more on some occasions than others, so you may need to increase your brushing sessions during these heavy-shedding periods. Too many baths can strip the oils from their skin and cause skin problems. For this reason, we recommend bathing them only when they are visibly dirty. For instance, dogs that roll in mud will need a bath. Dirty pond water and similar excursions will also call for a bath. Keep bathing to a minimum and use a sensitive shampoo that is formulated for dogs. This is especially true if trimming is required. Like all dogs, they will need their teeth brushed a few times a week and their nails cut when required. However, their nails can be done by a groomer if you are uncomfortable. Many purebred bloodlines have tiny gene pools, which is why breeds are pretty predictable. A Labrador Retriever will always act like a Labrador Retriever. However, this also means that rare genetic conditions become common. Mixed breeds can inherit genes from two different breeds, which effectively doubles their gene pool. This makes them a bit less predictable. However, it also has a direct effect on the genetic conditions they can inherit. They are much less likely to end up with a genetic condition that affects either dog breed. However, there are a few problems that may be prone to. For instance, patellar luxation is common in most small breeds. Since this dog is a bit smaller, they are more prone to it as well. This condition involves the kneecap being slightly misaligned. Usually, the kneecap sits in a unique groove. This can lead to pain walking, limping, and similar issues. It can be fixed with surgery, but this is often very expensive. There is a genetic component to this disease. However, it is present in both parent breeds so that a Eskapoo can inherit it from their parents in some cases. Ask any breeder about the parents of the dog and whether they have been health tested appropriately. Minor Conditions.

Along with a really nasty skin condition, he was emaciated, had an upper respiratory infection, UTI, GI worms, and heart worms. It was clearly evident he had been neglected and abused. He got treated and well fed with a heaping side of love and care so he could be ready to meet his new family. Even though he had a rough patch, he still loves and want to be loved. He is a true velcro Boxer and want to be with you and cuddle. If he can't cuddle, he will be at your side, waiting for your attention and to look into your soul with those big, chocolate eyes. He wants to do whatever you do and be where you are. He is such a joy to be with. He had a good life before his previous owner, so he was already neutered and knew manners and commands. He is very smart and love treats, so I he picks new things up fast. He is house broken and know to stop something if mom says "uh-uh no" or "leave it" in her firm voice. He doesn'tt chew anything and doesn't counter surf. He only barks at delivery people. Chance can share his people, toys, and his bed, but please let him have his food to himself - he didn't always have food and worries. Chance knows the up and down commands, though he won't get on furniture unless you tell me it is okay each time. He also know sit, stay, come, and shake. Chance walk easy on a leash and loves his walks. He corrects easy with voice commands and gentle pressure on the leash. Sometimes, something fun to chase goes by and he wants to get it. He uses a harness and that helps him learn not to do that. He is already much better at it, except with cats and rabbits - those are too exciting. Some of his favorites include car rides, walks, being outdoors, toys, and cuddling. Part of his past was being crated all day, every day without bathroom breaks, enough food, or play time. So please let him play often, with lots of exercise. Also, Chance can not ever be crated at home, the vet or boarding except in emergencies and with medication. Crating triggers panic attacks for him specifically because of his past. The good thing is, he is such a good boy free roam, you don't need to crate him! Chance very much likes dogs and wants to play, but his foster Boxer brother is really old and can't play. He plays with his people and neighbor dogs. Chance does a good job, but can miss some doggie signals and will need help learning all of them for playtime. He acts like a big puppy, so he could knock down or step on little children with his zoomies. He does love all the rubs, pets, hugs, cuddles, ear smooshing, kisses, and scratches you can dish out. He also is happy to be lifted for a bath, car ride, or vet exam, though. We know some of the abuse in Chance's past was done by a man. He is scared of some men - not all men, but certain actions done by men trigger memories. He is not scared of the women and kids he has met. It took Chance a few days to trust him, but I love my foster dad now. He now trusts that his foster family will only let safe people in the house and will steer wide of men on walks doing any of those scary things like swinging a tool or carrying a load overhead. Chance now enjoys walks and visitors to his house. Interested in me? If so, fill out an application and mention Chance. If you are already approved, just email the adoption coordinator and ask to be added to my list. Please consider a donation to help with Chance's medical care.
