And usually begins during the second week of life. Ears open at this point too, so your puppy will begin to hear. The Labrador puppies in this picture are two weeks olds. Two weeks old and the puppies eyes are now open! You can see that their eyes are now open and the puppies are beginning to look a little more dog-like. The breeder will be handling the puppies more now. And most puppies are wormed for the first time at two weeks old. Most 3 week old puppies can stand and sit, and are beginning to totter about. They are also starting to develop their individuality. No longer are they just a row of identical little fat furry sausages! This little three week old puppy :- Can easily be distinguished from his brother: Teething and Further Development At 3 weeks old, this is also the point at which puppies start teething — cutting their first deciduous baby teeth. Obviously the teeth are appearing for a reason! Some breeders will start to offer the first tastes of solid food at this point. Especially if the litter is a large one and putting a strain on the mother dog. It is lovely to watch a litter of 3 week old puppies beginning to interact with their brothers and sisters. They are running, playing enthusiastically, and have started to wag their little tails. The puppies will start to show bowel control as they move away from the other puppies to defecate. And solid food is becoming a major part of their diet. These little pups are tucking into some puppy food. Four week old puppies having their dinner in the fresh air If the weather is warm enough, puppies will be spending some time outdoors now. Mealtimes are a messy process, so feeding puppies out in the yard can be a good idea. Breeder Involvement Some mother dogs will lose interest in cleaning up after their pups at this point or soon afterwards. And many puppies will be wormed again this week. Vocalizations are becoming stronger at this puppy development stage. The litter will greet their mother noisily when she returns to them, and try hard to follow her out of the whelping box whenever she leaves. The puppies themselves are now eating solid food several times a day and gradually being weaned of their dependency on her milk. Puppies will still suckle ravenously when their mother returns and she will now often feed them standing up and only for a short time. She will also be teaching the puppies not to bite too hard. So, they should be increasingly spending time with humans and learning to be familiar with the sounds and sights of a human family environment. Puppies being raised in kennels must be brought into a home environment regularly from now on to ensure they develop into confident, friendly dogs. Six weeks old and full of mischief Puppies Still Have a Lot to Learn at 6 Weeks In some countries, puppies are taken to their new homes at this age. But this is not a good idea, and can result in a puppy that has poor bite inhibition and is challenging to manage. The puppies are learning not to bite too hard from the reactions of their mother and siblings. Growth is not quite so fast now. But the puppies will still grow strongly for the next few months. Many puppies will be wormed again this week. All that remains is for plenty of great socialization experiences to be packed into this week, with final checks on health. Many breeders will arrange for each seven week old puppy to have a vet check this week. And though some vets advise against it, some puppies are also given their first vaccinations before they leave for their new homes. Some breeders will now have the puppies trained to pee and poop on puppy pads or newspaper. And some will have been whistling to the puppies at meal times to get them used to coming to a human signal. Potty training is now underway and puppy socialization plans are being made. At this point, many of you will be thinking about training your puppy too. The next four weeks are vital in puppy development stages. Your main job is socializing your puppy. This means taking him to lots of new places and exposing him to lots of new experiences. So, life will be starting to get back to normal. Most puppies in the U. In the U. So, not all puppies will get their vaccinations at the exact same age. Socializing your puppy is still the most important job for you at this age. But, you cannot put your puppy on the ground outside until they have received their final vaccination. So, make sure you know exactly when their final jab is. And carry on introducing them to as many new people, things, and experiences as possible throughout this puppy development stage. Some people can suffer from the puppy blues at this stage too, as your life has completely changed! But, that does not mean socialization can stop. Puppies who are isolated at this point will soon lose that friendly fearlessness. You have an important job now, building on what has been achieved so far, and introducing your puppy to the world at ground level. This part of his education can begin once his vaccination cover is complete. He should be fully immunised at around this point. But check with your vet for confirmation of the actual date. Three months also marks the point at which many puppies will drop down from four daily meals, to three. This can cause problems for some puppies because the portions are larger If your puppy gets an upset tummy when you make this change, just go back up to four meals again for a few days, and give smaller portions for a few days when you try again. But, many will need another month before they can cope without frequent bathroom breaks and the occasional accident. Your puppy will begin to lose his baby teeth. This can also be a time at which biting can be most challenging. And try not to worry, this stage will soon be over! A few will need another month or two to complete the process. Remember, no two puppies are the same. That puppy fluffiness will have gone. For many puppies, five months is an awkward, gangly time. A five month old puppy may have shed the last of his soft puppy lines and be looking quite skinny. Some female dogs will have their first season during this month. But, for many, it will be another three or four months before this happens. This is a major milestone for your puppy. The Socialization Period 4 to 7 Weeks Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings. Interactions with humans are especially important between five and seven weeks. This is also the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge. As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite. During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life. To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline. You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of human contact during this stage. If you want, you can start leash training and even teach simple commands such as sit, down, stay and come. In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder. Chewing behaviors will also start growing at this point so look for some safe chew toys to keep your dog entertained. This is when hormonal changes start to occur and is the ideal time to spay or neuter your pup. Adolescence 6 to 18 Months After six months, your pup is already in the final stage of puppy development but is still young. This is a fun and exciting time for your pooch since they will be learning, full of energy, and exuberant. During this time, it is important to remember that even if your puppy now looks like a grown-up dog, they are still a puppy, at least in its mental capacity and emotional maturity. Work to slowly increase training and other activities. You can even work on advanced training such as agility or herding. Another option is to simply keep training them to ensure they interact in a non-aggressive and non-threatening way with other animals. It is also possible that your dog will go through another fearful period of time at some point after they reach six months. You can speed up the process with counter-conditioning and desensitization. It fits very well and is quite apt! Final Thoughts With the knowledge of how and when your new puppy will develop, you are better able to meet their needs. He tried crossing poodles with Labrador Retrievers to get a dog with the low-shedding coat of a Poodle and the calm intelligence of a Labrador. His cross was a success and the Labradoodle was born. Once people discovered how adorable these crosses were, the craze took off. People began breeding Poodles with all sorts of breeds to create ridiculously cute pups. The Goldendoodle was one of the first to become popular and remains one of the most sought-after doodle dogs. This dog is achieved by crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. Getting the deep red coat of a Red Goldendoodle is a little trickier. Typically, it is bred by adding an Irish Setter to the mix. How Is a Red Goldendoodle Bred? It has to be the right Golden Retriever and the right Poodle, otherwise, the deep rich red color becomes too diluted. Poodles have more variety of colors , so the color you choose here is crucial. You need a darker poodle to help contribute. A lighter-colored poodle could influence the color more toward apricot or gold. Is the Red Goldendoodle Popular? Have you seen a picture of this dog? In fact, it is one of the more sought-after colors. But a red one? Is the Red Goldendoodle Rare? Not necessarily, but it is not as readily available as the gold variety. As mentioned, breeders have to be very selective about breeding to produce this color, which means there are fewer breeders that offer it. You may have to spend a little more time looking around — and get on a couple of waiting lists — to find a Red Goldendoodle puppy. However, it is definitely possible. They are happy, sweet dogs with lots of energy. However, as a mixed breed dog, their appearance can vary. Most Red Goldendoodles are large dogs since Golden Retrievers are large and the Standard size Poodle is used in the cross. However, Mini and Toy poodles can also be used, resulting in smaller Red Goldendoodles. Because small ones are rarer, they are also more expensive. There are three types of Red Goldendoodle coats. Straight The hair is mostly straight, easy to comb, and the dog can be quite fluffy. However, this coat texture is more prone to shedding. Wavy The wavy texture is something in between. The hair is slightly curly, somewhat easy to comb, and the dog will generally shed less. Curly This is the most hypoallergenic texture because the dog rarely sheds. However, grooming those tight curls can get tedious and requires constant upkeep. Thus, if you are looking for a specific texture, you have to know what to look for. Puppies with wavy hair on their muzzles will have either wavy or curly adult coats. An experienced breeder can also tell you what their coat pattern will be by examining the hair around their muzzle. Color Variations of the Red Goldendoodle The color of a Red Goldendoodle might seem self-explanatory, but there is some variation. Coat colors can vary from deep dark red like a Field Golden Retriever to the considerably lighter apricot version. Interestingly, the apricot versions are not always considered Red Goldendoodles. It also tends to be more expensive. Furthermore, many dogs change color over time. As they age, their coat lightens, so you should be prepared for the fact that your dog may not always stay the same color. Furthermore, red Goldendoodles are not always a solid color. Many have white markings, particularly on their face and chest. Parti Poodles, Mismarks, Tuxedo and Ticking Overview While many people equate a Poodle with a solid colored dog with white, black, red and apricot being the most popular colors , there are many more variables in regard to coat color and markings; and some of these are AKC recognized but only partially allowed into certain events. This section will discuss: Mismarks a type of color marking Tuxedo a certain type of two-tone Ticking on the toy, miniature and standard Poodle. That secondary coat color may fall anywhere on the dog. This is one element that makes parti Poodles so interesting. No two ever look alike and many breeders take joy in the fact that having a litters of partis is akin to opening presents.On a well-bred parti Poodle, the white should be crisp and clear and the secondary color will have clear lines without fading into the white. While colors may blend a lot when the Poodle is a pup, there will be many changes as the Poodle matures. Final color and the element of blended vs crisp lines can be determined once the puppy has grown into adulthood. This Poodle puppy is a cream and beige parti. As the pup grows, either color may become more predominant. It is expected that many parti Poodles will have some tiny spots, usually black, that can appear on the paws or body. However, there should not be any ticking in the white hairs. One litter can contain a black and white parti and an apricot and white parti, with color falling in completely different areas. Since the MITF gene is recessive to solid color Solid color is a stronger gene , both dam and sire must be partis to create partis and a parti paired with a solid will most likely produce a solid. Parti Poodles cannot currently be shown in AKC conformation events, and due to this some people mistakenly believe that they also cannot be AKC registered. This is not true. Partis are AKC registerable, with pre-designated color numbers, and can be shown in obedience and agility events. Many people feel that at some point in the future, they will be able to enter into conformation in the United States, as they are in other countries such as Germany. It should be noted that partis were always very popular across the world. In the late 's, for unknown and unrecorded reasons, those in power decided to exclude them from the show ring. In the Multi-Color Poodle Club of American was formed and held their own conformation show in , on the same day as the IKC's 12th annual premier show. A mixmark on a Poodle is considered to be a fault in regard to show conformation. Many people and even some breeders confuse mismarks with Tuxedo Poodles, or partis, believing that these words mean the same thing. While both will have white, there is a big difference. Essentially, a mismark is a Poodle with one main coat color other than white.The light color or white will fall on some or all of the following areas of the dog: The chest, paws, chin, neck, tip of the tail. To further define the difference between partis and mismarks, if you were to shave down a mismark, the Poodle's skin would all be the main color of the coat. However, if you shaved down a parti Poodle, the skin would be 2 colors, showing where the white hair was and where the colored hair was. These dogs will have more than 1 of the acceptable color patterns. For example: A parti Poodle this is 1 acceptable color pattern with phantom markings a secondary acceptable color pattern. These dogs are not accepted into the AKC show ring. Tuxedo A true tuxedo Poodle will have a very special markings in certain areas that literally remind you of a tuxedo. There will usually be: A white bib - this is color on the chest, it may or may not wrap all the way around the dog's neck A white belly - This "should" touch the bib, making a continuous white area White that extends from the belly down to the front and hind legs and paws. A darker color that covers the entire saddle back. While this is the preferred look of a tuxedo Poodle, some will only have white that extends down the front legs, some will have a disconnection of the bib to belly, others may have white markings on the head, etc. While slight spotting on the white hairs is acceptable, heavy spotting known as ticking is not preferred. The lines of where the two colors meet should be clear and distinct with no blending or 'muddy' lines. Ticking Ticking is just a term that means spotting. When a dog such as the Poodle has ticking, these are very small dots. This usually occurs on white or light hair with the ticking or spotting being a dark color such as black. The gene that causes ticking is very dominant, therefore many breeders feel that Poodles that are ticked should not be used to breed partis, as the ticking can cause a rather muddied, dirty appearance that gets in the way of what would otherwise be a clear, crisp, clean looking coat. Breeder Conversation Corner Last month I decided to purchase another standard poodle to add more color variations to what I already had. My first thought, after praying about it for several days, was to find a black and white parti colored puppy. Essentially what that means is the dog will be black and white with no particular markings. After looking for three hours, through 61 pages of standard poodles, I had picked out twelve possibilities. Unfortunately, all of them had been vaccinated and dewormed, but with homeopathy I knew I could support their body in reversing most of the damage from those. I decided to send a quick email to each of the twelve breeders that looked like a possibility, asking if they would consider selling a puppy to me from their next litter before they did any vaccines or dewormers on them. Then I went to bed while waiting their responses. The next day I went on my email not knowing for sure what to expect, but hoped I would get some responses from the email inquiries. I got a number of interesting responses. One said the vaccines were required by law — which they are not. Only the rabies vaccine is state mandated, and never for puppies. One other gentleman said that although he used these things on his dogs, he was willing to let me purchase one before any was given to it. In addition to that, she did not vaccinate her adult dogs after their first puppy shots, and fed them only raw meat. This was the breeder I wanted, she was the best I hoped to find. Two weeks later, I had a puppy on its way. I knew I would have to address dewormer and vaccine damages, but a raw meat diet goes a long way to ensure the health and healing potential of a dog who has been exposed to these toxins, so my hopes were high. A parti poodle is a poodle of white and another color. There are several distinct patterns: the tuxedo, spotted, and abstract all refer to a poodle that is white and another color. That color can be black, brown, red, apricot, creme, silver, blue, grey, cafe-au-lait, or silver-beige. Parti poodles are usually more than half white with colored spots. They can range from almost a solid white with just a few spots of color to the more colorful tuxedos. Tuxedos look like a poodle dressed for a party. They have white on the legs and a white collar that may or may not go completely around the neck. Tuxedo-colored poodles also have white on the belly that should extend up to the chest. Some tuxedos have colored legs almost to the feet and others have white all the way up to their back. Abstract poodles have limited white markings and are almost a solid colored dog. The most common abstract poodle marking is a simple white mark on the chest. White splashes of color may also occur on the face, head, chest, and feet. Abstract poodles sometimes have a white chest and white feet that look like they have been dipped in paint. Ticking marks are the small spots found within the white parts of the dog. Dogs may have little to no ticking. Ticking on legs may look like small spots or be large enough to look like stripes. Multi-colored poodles include parti poodles, abstracts, brindles and phantom poodles. These combinations have been the Hallmark of the Standard Poodle from its inception. We can and have proven that and this also can be proven by our dogs today. There is not a solid colored Standard Poodles that does not have a multi-colored background somewhere. It is just a matter of stacking the color genes on the top and bottom of the pedigree in the proper order. The first parti, which just means two colors, we will discuss comes in black and white, brown and white, red and white, silver and white, apricot and white, blue and white. There are several patterns in these color combinations controlled by the following genes: Piebald which is parti , saddle pattern, dot gene, tuxedo and abstract. I am not going to get technical I just want you to recognize what you are looking at. These are all patterns of the major colors. Within those colors are sables. The hairs are tipped with a different color on the ends and lighter coat underneath. There can be black sables, red sables, brown sables and grey sables with lighter coats underneath of varying color combinations. The sable tips can be cut off and a couple of weeks later they will come back. Brindles are another variation of color. This gene is always tied to the phantom gene. These are color patterns in the colored areas of the dog. Here are several beautiful examples. Tiger Lily is a solid silver brindle with bars. Josie is a tri-colored brindle Irish tuxedo. You will see the brindling, dotted bar pattern, in her face and main colored areas. She has a tuxedo color pattern on her body, it is just like putting a tuxedo coat on her. If she was standing up on her rear legs there would be the patterning down her back legs, white on the chest, belly and bottom of legs.
