The rescue was conducted by the Utah Animal Advocacy Foundation. Between July and September, Korb and other volunteers with the rescue organization made five separate round trips to eastern Nevada to transport the pugs to Utah. When a reputable rescuer gets her hands on a puppymill survivor, providing medical attention is just the beginning. The physical damage can be staggering. The psychological damage is much worse. It takes a very special adopter to accept and love a puppymill survivor. Rehabilitation of the puppymill survivor begins with rescue, but can only be completed by a committed, loving family. The purpose of this article is to help demystify some of the acquired behaviors of the puppymill dog, and to let the adopter know what to expect. Common Puppymill Survivor Behaviors Terror of humans hands: The only time most mill dogs are removed from their cages, it's a painful experience. The dog may be grabbed by the first reachable part of it's body: tail, leg, scruff, ears. This takes lots of patience and non-threatening touches to overcome. You may have to lie on the floor face down with your eyes averted to get the dog to approach you at all. Let him come near you and sniff. It may take an hour, or days for this to happen. You can sometimes begin by holding the dog, petting him gently for a few seconds, speaking softly, then place him carefully down. Let him know you do not wish to restrain him. Lengthen the time for this ritual each day. Never raise your voice, clap your hands, or allow loud noises in the home during this adjustment period. You must strive to create a totally non-threatening environment. Behave as submissively as possible. Build trust slowly. Aversion To Eye Contact: Many puppymill survivors refuse to make eye contact with humans. This indicates fearful submission which decreases as the dog comes to realize he will not be harmed by you and begins to trust. Talking to your dog in a soft, calm voice helps speed the process. A dog may not speak English, but the gentle tone of your voice and the fact that he is the focus of your concern will be understood. The "I'm Afraid Of My Food" Routine: Anytime the cage door is opened on a mill dog, fear is the response, because an evil human is behind it. Of course, the cage door must be opened to insert a bowl of food, which may also be used to entice the dog within reach. It's not unusual to see your puppymill survivor run in the opposite direction when you sit dinner on the floor. Turn your back and walk away until the dog feels "safe" enough to eat. Let him eat undisturbed. Some never grasp the finer points. Most males will mark, and many females, too. Crates are useful in housetraining. Belly bands a cloth band which wraps around male dogs covering the ureter will help prevent marking. Nicely fitted doggie diapers are available from Foster and Smith. Human diapers can also be used - just cut a hole for the tail. Put your dog on a schedule. Take him outside first thing in the morning, at lunchtime whenever possible, after dinner, before bedtime. If you see him lift his leg in the house, a shaker can jar filled with small pebbles or clicker can distract him long enough for you to get him outside. Never raise your voice. Never hit a dog. Take him outside and reinforce by saying, "Potty outside", or something similar. Use positive reinforcement when the dog does his business outside.Potty outside! Good, good boy! Never take your dog outside a securely fenced yard until you are thoroughly bonded. Then if you take your dog outside the fence, double-check to be sure harness is secure enough. I sometimes use a collar and harness, then run the lead from the collar through the harness for extra safety. If a mill dog gets loose outside a secured area, he will likely run until he drops; catching him will be quite a feat. Prevention is by far the best policy. Coprophagy: Stool-eating is common in puppymill survivors. There is much contention as to the cause. However, most rescuers feel it is a learned behavior. Again, prevention is the best policy. Pick up the yard frequently. Some mill dogs stop this behavior over time. Fear of Water: Many puppymill survivors are frightened of water hoses. Puppymillers generally don't bother removing the dogs before hosing down their cages. I have known adopters whose puppymill survivors have become well-acclimated to homes, families and leashed walks only to have the dog bolt when they chanced by a neighbor watering his lawn. Fear Biting: Fear biting is more common in abuse cases than in puppymill survivors, but we do see it occasionally. Puppymill survivors, like feral dogs, usually cower in the presence of humans. Fear biting can frequently be overcome with proper training and commitment, but it generally requires a professional animal behaviorist, not to mention a strong commitment from the adoptive family. Sadly, because of both the enormity of the canine overpopulation problem and the abundance of more easily salvageable dogs, most fear biters are euthanized. These are a few of the most common puppymill survivor behaviors and suggestions for working with them. Working with a puppymill survivor is not an easy undertaking. But for those of us who have witnessed the miracle of these frightened beings growing to love and trust, to play with toys for the first time, to learn to take soft beds and good food for granted, it is one of the most joyful and rewarding experiences of our lives. After a volunteer for The Utah Animal Advocacy Foundation expressed concern about an unethical breeding situation in Nevada, the UAAF coordinated with volunteers as well as the breeders to find a resolution that could bring the pugs to safety. The pugs were brought to Utah, where they were placed in foster homes to await adoption. Maryjo Korb from UAAF said the dogs were kept in a dirt enclosure with chain link fences, and several had lice. After the rescue, a few puppies were born but died shortly after from genetic problems caused by inbreeding. Of the six puppies with parvovirus, only one survived. Additionally, prospective dog buyers can look for puppies registered through the American Kennel Club, ask for medical backgrounds and visit the breeders to make sure the dogs are being treated well, Hamilton said. Humane Education Adopting a Puppy Mill Rescue Dog Puppy mills are essentially large-scale dog breeding factories, where the dogs are typically housed under deplorable conditions, living in overcrowded, soiled cages with wire floors. Inadequate veterinary care, food, water, physical and psychological stimulation e. Females are bred continuously until they no longer can reproduce, at which point they are often killed. The puppies are taken from the mother between 6 and 8 weeks of age, and are sold to pet shops or sold over the Internet. To the puppy mill owner, profit, not the welfare of the dog, is of utmost importance. Due to the living conditions of these dogs, physical, as well as psychological problems are common. Physical conditions may include heart and kidney disease, visual and hearing impairments, epilepsy, musculoskeletal problems, and respiratory and intestinal disorders just to name a few. Anxiety and fear of humans, and fear of novel situations and objects, due to inadequate exposure during critical periods of development are the most common emotional problems. Puppies removed too young from their mother and littermates, at 6 weeks of age, may also develop behavior problems including aggression. Housetraining the adult dog can be a challenge given their lack of housetraining experience. Leash walking will be a nonexistent skill, and adults in particular will have to learn how to play. Lastly, these dogs tend to be overly sensitive and fearful of handling, including hands reaching toward them to pet them. Some puppy mill rescue dogs will make fantastic strides in their recovery, yet some may never fully overcome the effects of the puppy mill. The recovery process could take months to years because all dogs have different personalities. The recovery of some puppy mill dogs goes faster if there is a resident and confident dog friendly dog in the household. With a lot of patience, persistence, compassion and love, having adopted a puppy mill rescue dog will be an enriching and rewarding experience for the adopter. Preparing for your Newly Adopted Puppy Mill Rescue Dog Purchase the following items: a dog crate that is the appropriate size tall enough for the dog to stand in, long enough for the dog to lie down in. Try a wire and plastic airline crate to determine which one is preferred by the dog. The crate can also protect them, and household items, from destructive chewing and ingestion of potentially dangerous objects. Some dogs may be petrified of any crate, in which case they could be enclosed in a small area blocked off with baby gates. Place the crate, food, water, bedding, and wee wee pads or newspaper on the floor. Be sure to dog-proof the room if your dog is not going to be crated while unsupervised. For the very shy dog, allocate a couple of hours of alone time, peeking in occasionally to make sure your dog is okay. Traveling or having loud parties at this point is not recommended. Hand your dog treats while attaching the leash to the collar to help establish a positive association with the leash, and give some more treats while your dog is walking around wearing the leash. Next, walk around the house holding the leash loosely at first, and then increase the resistance slightly so that your dog feels a bit of tension against the collar or harness. Lastly, walk your dog outside. Always remove the leash if the dog is not supervised. Collars should also be taken off of young puppies when not supervised to avoid accidental choking. Over the course of the next several weeks allow your dog to explore more areas of the house if your dog is interested. Do not push your dog to do anything that will make the dog uncomfortable. Spend quiet time with your dog, perhaps just sitting and reading a book while in the same room. To gain trust, sit and pet your dog while giving the dog some treats. If your dog is uncomfortable being pet, then just try to offer some treats. Introduce new people slowly and individually. Always have special treats for your visitor to offer your dog. Finally, many dogs gain confidence by engaging in basic obedience training.

Despite the much longer case of the Velo-Dog the power of these two rounds was quite comparable when fired from a short-barrel revolver. The cartridge was referred to both as 5. If buyers of these guns had been limited to cyclists these little revolvers would have quickly faded into obscurity, but given the high levels of urban crime in European cities around the turn of the century they had a much broader appeal. The Velo-Dog seems to have slotted neatly between these two; easier to conceal than the. Like the French guns they were all double-action revolvers, and initially were hammerless, though later guns with exposed hammers were made. Belgian and Spanish guns also frequently had a manual safety that prevented the trigger from moving. These guns were so small that even persons with small hands found them awkward, and they were extremely difficult to shoot with any degree of accuracy even at very short ranges. Belgian Velo-Dog revolvers were, for the most part, a fusion of the hammerless double-action-only French designs and the Bulldog-style revolvers they had been producing for many years. Mainly they retained the loading and unloading mechanism that consisted of a hollow cylinder pin with an ejector-rod running down the center of it and a loading-gate on the right side of the frame. The ejector pin would be drawn forward, then pivoted to the side to allow empty cases to be pushed out when the loading gate was opened. Bullets would then be loaded one at a time as the cylinder was rotated. There were other styles including top-break revolvers with auto-ejectors, but most of them operated like a Bulldog revolver. When the loading gate was opened the cylinder would swing out to the right, and all six shells could be ejected at once. After careful examination I am reasonably sure this one was made by Mussen-Lalleman between , and the Belgian proof-marks on the barrel, frame and cylinder support this. The barrel and cylinder still retain some of their original bluing, and the frame is color-case hardened, though little of the color remains. This picture shows the safety lever on the back of the flame. Up is safe, down is fire. The gun locks up properly, and everything works as it should. The trigger pull is short and smooth but very stiff. The front sight is pretty decent, but the shallow notch of the rear sight is not particularly useful. The method for unloading: the ejector pin is withdrawn from the center of the cylinder pin and rotated to the right, then slid into the front of the cylinder to eject the empty cartridge, then withdrawn and the cylinder rotated to the next chamber to repeat this process until all five chambers have been emptied. To load the revolver you swing open the loading gate, then insert cartridges one at a time as you turn the cylinder. The cylinder can rotate freely unless the trigger is pulled. The folding trigger is quite long, and the pull is very stiff. Reloading dies are available, though they are rather more expensive than more common calibers. If you have some tools and are a handy sort you can make your own from. Using a hand-drill and file to cut down the base of a. After reducting the section just in front of the rim to about. After your reduced a section in front of the rim you can cut it off, leaving a rimmed section that will hold a small-pistol primer. This should be a force-fit. I find cutting the cartridge with a diamond-saw then carefully filing it to length works well. After the case is cut and trimmed to length carefully clean the interior with a small patch soaked in acetone to remove residue from the soldering flux. This is pretty labor-intensive, but you can produce small numbers this way without too much of a problem. In the American west of the 19th C. When it arrived I was surprised to find it was pretty much all there, and promptly assembled it into a functional gun. The hammer-spur had been crudely removed, so I smoothed that out first of all. The gun was chambered in. After carefully measuring the cylinder I bored it out to chamber. I also needed to fabricate a replacement for the trigger-return spring almost immediately, but that was actually pretty easy. Despite having a surprisingly smooth double-action trigger this was not an easy gun to shoot. Not only are the sights nearly useless, but locating my hand on the grip and preventing it from shifting under recoil was difficult. You might notice that the sight is located surprisingly far from the muzzle. I am told that this may have been due to import restrictions on barrel length in some countries, and the sight was located so that the barrel could be cut short after import. These were available as a five-shot in. I very carefully did this after sourcing another from Numerich Arms. The trigger-return spring broke while I was sorting the gun and I had to fabricate a replacement. The gun does not lock up particularly tightly, but it is shoot-able- though the useless sights make accuracy beyond a few yards a dubious proposition. The double action trigger is, again, surprisingly good. This one has Birmingham proof and inspection marks, but that does not indicate British manufacture, merely that it was imported for sale in Britain. This gun is chambered in. While the ergonomics of the handle can best be described as odd, once you are used to that it is an excellent shooter. The sights- a blade front and a reasonably deep V-notch at the rear- are decently usable at five to seven yards. The gun is quite stout and well-made, giving up little if anything in quality to the Webley Bulldogs. This was my first big-bore bulldogs, sold to me by a fellow on a Cowboy Action shooting board for a very reasonable price. This was the second model of the famous RIC, incorporating numerous improvements over the original model. It is almost certainly the gun used by Dr. Watson in the Sherlock Holmes stories. This cartridge was originally loaded with a gr. The grip of this gun is surprisingly comfortable and the double-action pull is excellent. The timing took a little work, but now the cylinder locks up very tightly. The sights are quite decent with a brass blade in front and a deep v-notch rear sight. The usual caveats apply, of course: Have the gun looked over by a competent gunsmith to determine whether it is safe to fire, and exercise great caution when determining the loads you will use.
