The Golden Retriever has a medium to long thick wavy golden coat. The Bulldog, in contrast, has a short, flat, neat coat. Both have a double layer coat, with an insulating inner layer and a wind and water repellant outer layer. So what coat type will your Golden Bulldog grow up to have? This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! My Animal Aid Journey: I came into Animal Aids care back in April after spending some time in a shelter in a rural part of Washington where I was displaying signs of behavioral decline from shelter stress. Once I moved into my first foster home in a suburban neighborhood right outside of Portland, it became quite clear that I hadnt had much experience in a typical home environment before. While I loved running around and playing with my fosters, I was spooked by quite a bit at their home and would become especially sensitive at night time. We decided itd be best to move me into Animal Aids Emergency Kennel, so the Animal Aid staff could get a closer look at what might be going on. After a few vet appointments and a consultation with a Veterinary Behaviorist at Synergy Behavior Solutions, we discovered that I not only had an ear infection, but also had torn ligaments in both my rear legs, luxating patellas, and hip-dysplasia. It was a shock to many as I had been running, playing and jumping around like nothing was wrong! The medical discovery did, however, help explain why I was becoming so sensitive at night after a long day of play with fosters, staff, and volunteers. Once I got started on some medicine to treat my pain and anxiety, Animal Aid started to see a huge improvement in my behavior and an increase in my desire to train. One of my dedicated Emergency Kennel volunteers ended up falling in love with me and brought me into her home for fostering, so I could prepare for surgery to get my rear-end in better shape. Surgery and recovery was pretty hard on me because I love to be active and had to remain calm for such a long time, but I was approved for increased activity and continue to build up my strength with the guidance of my friends at Amicus Physical Therapy. Ive really been able to learn so much about how nice it can be living inside of home, but I still tend to love spending as much time outdoors as possible! Im a big fan of chasing squirrels, so it helps tremendously that my fosters have a tall and secure fence to keep me and the squirrels safe. My current fosters have taught me many valuable skills that they will share with an adopter and they continue to keep up with my behavioral modification and management with the guidance of the awesome staff at Synergy Behavior Solutions. I am looking for.I need a home that is going to be dedicated to following my behavioral plans, meeting my needs, and giving me all the love I deserve so I can continue to prosper. I definitely need a home with a fenced yard because outside time is my absolute favorite and I am reactive towards strangers and other dogs though I have made amazing improvement with some fear free training! I love to chase and go on walks with other dogs, but I can be a bit rude and annoying if the other dog isnt interested in playing with me. I should not live full-time with another dog and should be kept under close supervision during any playtime meetings due to my history of resource guarding. After some scuffles with my foster brother, we now live in separate areas of our home. Unfortunately, due to my bite-history, I cannot be safely placed in a home with children or a home that might expect to have children in the future. Likes: I love to play! I could really play all day, if you let me. Tug seems to be my favorite game, but now that I am allowed to run again, fetch is also a blast! I love to romp around and chase my flirt pole, theres definitely some kind of herding breed in me! I also really enjoy spending time with my people. I will follow you around like a shadow and love keeping a close eye on my fosters when they are working in their garden. Luckily, as much as I love my people, Im still very good at spending time alone and have never become vocal or destructive. Ill be full of excitement and wiggles when you come back home though! Im a total smartie pants and bond the fastest with people who know how to work my brain! You better be ready to keep my training time fun and exciting though, otherwise, Ill just get bored with you and go find something more fun to do. Dislikes: We dont know for sure, but its likely that I have been hit in the past due to my fear and sensitivity around raised hands, sticks, poles, etc. You must be cautious about this, especially when I am still learning to trust you as I might aggress if I am triggered. While I am able to tolerate being left alone, I dont seem to enjoy it. Ive got some major FOMO and have been notoriously good at objecting to going back into my confined spaces when my fosters need to head out somewhere. I also dont like to be crated. I do great with exercise pens and baby gates, but I seem to have some claustrophobia with small confinement, like crates. Animal Aid and my fosters have done a great job of helping me get over some of my car riding phobia, but its still not my favorite activity. I seem to be a bit nervous around big trucks and buses when I am out on walks, but am working hard on overcoming this fear. I enjoy meeting new people as long as they are accompanied by someone I trust and follow along with my special introduction instructions which sets everyone up for success! Once you give me some time and we are acclimated to one another, we are certain to be friends for life! Due to all the medical issues and pain I experienced in my young life, I am not a fan of excessive pets and handling. Let me decide when its time for pets or cuddles time, please! I absolutely hate it if you try to take any treats away from me which has resulted in aggressive behavior. I follow a strict management plan when it comes to food and treats to prevent the unpleasant behavior from happening. I have nipped and bit a few folks that left some bruising and scratches. I always seem to feel real sorry about it afterwards, but its really important for any adopter to know about this history and it must be taken into serious consideration as we acclimate to one another in a new home. I have undergone extensive training, am taking behavioral medications, have a colorful custom-made muzzle, and have thorough behavioral management plans that must be strictly kept up with in order to prevent these incidents from occurring in my future home. I had major surgery on both my rear legs in August to help make me more comfortable. It was a very long and hard recovery process, so its very important that I live with someone who is very careful about not allowing me to reinjure myself, now that I am able to run and play again. Pain management will have to be a requirement throughout the rest of my life!!!

He did have some health issues and developed a hernia that eventually had to be surgically taken care of. The Vet at that time, which was the vet they sent us to, did tell us his minor health issues he felt were because the dog had been taken away from his mother to early. Everything was covered by their health warranty tho. He ended up living 16 years and gave myself and my daughters great joy during his life. We took great care of him and he never had any other health issues throughout his life. Overall, I was happy with my purchase and that they did back their warranty of the dog. When we decided to get our dog from them it was because a friend of us got one from this store and everything was smooth and they had an excellent experience. The problem is that the store said when we bought it that they need to make some test to the puppy so we can take it home and we agree because we wanted the puppy to be safe and healthy. However, at the time of sale the salesperson told us, it will take one to two weeks which we agree. I agree that they can take their time to make sure their puppies get out of the store healthy and safe, but I think they may need to arrange the way how they sell this dog because they may need to do all the their follow ups with the vet before putting them available for the costumers and also tell your costumers that it could take a month or more to release the puppies, so the costumer can make a decision of continuing with the purchase or not. I hope I can get my puppy which it is a Golden Retriever this week. My wife and I, even took two weeks off from work so we can adapt him to the house and my other dogs, but our puppy was not able to come home within those weeks. I should of known already to run but I fell for this puppy. We named him MILO!! I brought him home to only have him for 2 days. He stopped eating, drinking and playing. We brought him to the Vet only to discover that he was diagnosed with Parvo. The Vet then stated that we couldn't take him home since he was contagious to other animals and the cost to make him better would be over 10k. Prices will be cheaper too. Every time I pass by this store in the mall I feel sad for those poor puppies. Pug The Pug - What a Pup! If you're looking for a great mixture of spunky, cute, and silly, a Pug might be just the right addition to your family. Pugs were first bred in China centuries ago. They were treasured pets kept by royalty; it was common for a Pug to have her own guard, palace, and even a personal chef! Many Pug owners agree that their ancestry is strong in that they still behave like royalty! Pugs were first acknowledged by the AKC in and were quickly welcomed into American homes. Pugs are a generally healthy breed with an average lifespan of years. Your Pug's Health We know that because you care so much about your dog , you want to take good care of her. That is why we have summarized the health concerns we will be discussing with you over the life of your Pug. By knowing about health concerns specific to Pugs, the doctors and staff of Viera East Veterinary Center can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks. That does not mean your dog will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen in Pugs to give you an idea of what may come up in her future. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for Pugs. At the end of the article, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your Pug looking and feeling her best. Unfortunately, your Pug is more likely than other dogs to have problems with her teeth. Dental disease starts with tartar build-up on the teeth and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. In fact, your Pug's life span may even be cut short by one to three years! Infections Pugs are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections — the same ones that all dogs can get — such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination , which we will recommend based on her age, the diseases we see in our area, and other factors. Obesity Obesity can be a significant health problem in Pugs. It is a serious disease that may cause or worsen joint problems, metabolic and digestive disorders, back pain, and heart disease. Instead, give her a hug, brush her fur or teeth, play a game with her, or perhaps take her for a walk. Parasites All kinds of worms and bugs can invade your Pug's body, inside and out. Everything from fleas and ticks to ear mites can infest her skin and ears. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms , and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Pug is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions against common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Some of the blood supply that should go to the liver goes around it instead, depriving the liver of the blood flow it needs to grow and function properly. If your friend has PSS, his liver cannot remove toxins from his bloodstream effectively. Surgery may be needed, but in some cases, we can treat with a special diet and medication. Eye Problems Not many things have as dramatic an impact on your dog's quality of life as the proper functioning of his eyes. Unfortunately, Pugs can inherit or develop a number of different eye conditions, some of which may cause blindness if not treated right away, and most of which can be extremely painful! We will evaluate his eyes at every examination to look for any signs for concern. Because your Pug has eyeballs that naturally protrude, he is more vulnerable to eye injuries. Scrapes or punctures to the cornea the protective covering on the eyeball are the most common injuries. Not only do eye injuries hurt, they can become infected and affect his vision. Call us at right away if your pet has any problems with his eyes. A damaged cornea is painful and should be treated immediately. Medication and sometimes surgery may be required. Entropion is a condition in which the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea the surface of the eyeball. This is an extremely irritating and painful condition that can ultimately lead to blindness. Entropion can occur in any dog breed, however, your Pug is especially at risk for this heritable disorder. Surgical correction is usually successful if performed early. Dry eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS, is common in Pugs. KCS reduces the amount of fluid produced by the tear glands such that they are no longer able to keep the eyes moist. This results in sore, itchy eyes and infections. Symptoms of KCS include a dull, dry appearance or thick discharge from the eyes, squinting, and pawing at the eyes. Diabetes Diabetes mellitus is a fairly common disease in dogs. Any breed can be affected, but Pugs have an above average incidence. Dogs with diabetes are unable to regulate the metabolism of sugars in their bodies and require daily insulin injections. Diabetes is a serious condition and one that is important to diagnose and treat as early as possible. Symptoms include increased eating, drinking, and urination, along with weight loss. If he shows signs, we will conduct lab tests to determine if he has this condition and discuss treatment options with you. Treatment requires a serious commitment of time and resources. Well-regulated diabetic dogs today have the same life expectancy as other canines. Allergies In humans, allergies to pollen, mold, or dust make people sneeze. In dogs, rather than sneezing, allergies make their skin itchy. The feet, belly, folds of the skin, and ears are most commonly affected. Symptoms typically start between the ages of one and three and can get worse every year. Licking the paws, rubbing the face, and frequent ear infections are the most common signs of allergies. The good news is that there are many treatment options available for these conditions. Mange Demodex is a microscopic mite that lives in the hair follicles of all dogs. In mild cases, pet owners may notice a few dry, irritated, hairless lesions. These often occur on the face or feet and may or may not be itchy. Secondary skin infections may also occur. Prompt veterinary care is important to keep the disease from getting out of hand. Many pets seem to outgrow the problem, while others require lifelong management. Skin Infections Your Pug is prone to a form of skin infection called lip-fold pyoderma, which occurs because the folds of skin along the lower jaw are usually moist. Bacteria and yeast can readily thrive here and cause a reddened, smelly area that is uncomfortable for your dog. When symptoms are severe, the excess skin folds can also be surgically removed. It can cause severe and often irreversible damage to the brain. Middle-aged, small breed dogs such as Pugs are more susceptible than other breeds. Symptoms may be acute, leading rapidly to death; they may progress chronically over several months; or occasionally, only the eyes are affected. Treatment includes corticosteroids, but the response to therapy is variable and the prognosis is generally poor. Bone and Joint Problems A number of different musculoskeletal problems have been reported in Pugs. While it may seem overwhelming, each condition can be diagnosed and treated to prevent undue pain and suffering. With diligent observation at home and knowledge about the diseases that may affect your friend's bones, joints, or muscles, you will be able to take great care of him throughout his life. Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. Stiffness in your Pug's elbows or hips may become a problem for him, especially as he matures. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Surgery is also sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. And keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering! Young Pugs may be prone to a painful degenerative hip condition called Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. The exact cause of this condition is still not completely understood, but it is thought to be caused by a reduced blood supply to the hip, which causes the femoral head the top of the thigh bone to become brittle and fracture easily. Usually occurring between six and nine months of age, LCP causes pain and lameness in one or both rear legs, and often requires surgery. Sometimes your Pug's kneecap patella may slip out of place. This is called patellar luxation. You might notice that your pet, while running, suddenly picks up a back leg or skips and hops for a few strides. He might then kick his leg out sideways to pop the kneecap back in place. These are common signs of patellar luxation. If the problem is mild and involves only one leg, your friend may not require much treatment beyond arthritis medication. When symptoms are severe, surgery may be needed to realign the kneecap to keep it from luxating further. Spinal Deformities Pugs are more likely than other canines to be born with spinal deformities, a condition called hemivertebrae, which may lead to spinal cord damage, instability, or disability. Mast Cell Tumor Mast cell tumors are a particularly nasty type of skin cancer found more often in Pugs than other breeds. The sooner these tumors are surgically removed, the better. Unfortunately, mast cell tumors often look very similar to other kinds of skin lumps and lesions, many of which are not harmful. Therefore, all suspicious lumps should be tested and surgically removed as soon as possible. Many cancers are cured by surgical removal, so early detection is critical. Degenerative Myelopathy Degenerative myelopathy is a neurologic condition, similar to ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease in people, that causes weakness and poor nerve function in the hind legs. It affects Pugs more frequently than other breeds. If your dog has this disease, he will become increasingly weak and disabled in the hind legs, eventually suffering from paralysis in his hindquarters, which also leads to incontinence. Rehabilitation, exercise, acupuncture, and dietary supplements can be helpful, but there is no cure for degenerative myelopathy. A genetic test is available to determine whether your dog is at risk for this heritable disease. Bladder or Kidney Stones There are a few different types of stones that can form in the kidney or in the bladder, and Pugs are more likely to develop them than other breeds. Call us immediately! Respiratory Distress Syndrome Respiratory distress syndrome, also known as brachycephalic syndrome, affects dogs with a short nose, like your Pug. Short-nosed dogs have the same amount of tissue in their noses and throats as longer-nosed dogs, but with less area to contain it. As a consequence, the soft palate at the back of the roof of the mouth is too long and may hang down into the airway. All of these differences can lead to a narrow and obstructed airway such that many of these dogs can barely breathe! Watch for exercise intolerance, loud breathing, coughing, bluish gums, or fainting. With his short nose, your pet is also more likely to develop other problems, such as flatulence from excessive air intake, pneumonia from aspirating food, and heat stroke. In severe cases, surgical correction may be recommended to alleviate airway obstruction. Taking Care of Your Pug at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your Pug live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. She has low grooming needs. Brush her coat as needed, at least weekly. Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. Her deep wrinkles need to be cleaned and dried often to prevent infections. She is well suited for apartment living; she will need a daily walk and regular inside play. She is sensitive to temperature extremes; avoid any prolonged exposure and be very alert to the signs of heat stress. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your Pug needs help.

According to the German Shepherd Dog Club of America the coat color may vary although strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out off-colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified. Black and Tan and Sable are seen mostly in Working Lines. Solid black dog with classic recessive black genetics is typically a working line, there are however, Solid Black dogs with dominant black genetics seen in Show line. This would be the most common color of this breed. Most of the time this is the type of dog that you would see in the movies or television or even the advertising of this breed. I would venture to say that b-tmore dogs of this color than any other color of this breed does the most winning in the conformation shows. In fact some judges have a hard time putting up some dogs of other colors like the black dog, the bi-color or even the sable dog. For some of them, this is not a color that they prefer. Of course the best structured dog with the most desirable temperament should be the dog that wins. However, it is a known fact that some judges just do not favor other coat colors besides the black and tan variation. West German Show Line The blanket type of coat is where the saddle part of the dog extends approximately to the elbow of the dog. There are no tan markings on this dog. However, sometimes this dog may appear to have a reddish undercoat. Most of the time that is due to the dog being out in the sun too long. Also I have seen a totally black dog have a white splash on their chest. The solid black is a recessive gene meaning that both parents must carry this color gene. Even with a sable, you can see variances in the color of the pigment. Sometimes you will hear people say they own a red sable. Sometimes you will hear them say that they own a gray. So you can find black sables, tan sables silver sables or red sables. This is how much the coat of a sable can vary. Vom Geliebten Haus. Because it is the most basic GSD color, it is also called black and tan. The pattern is rarely visible at birth, and the pulling back of the black saddle-patch progresses with age. In the vast majority of cases, a puppy will be born with tan points that gradually become darker and move from the head and neck towards the shoulders, back, sides, and tail, until ultimately becoming a black saddle. No other body part is covered by the black pigment eumelanin in adult German shepherds, meaning there is a well-defined genetic chain of events that produces this pattern. The melanistic mask black mask on the face has a separate locus that determines its existence. Need more German shepherd colors to choose from? A second role, more relevant for what we are talking about today, is the distribution of either pigment across the body. Keep in mind that the black pigment can also produce more than just black. An example of a black variation is the increasingly popular blue German shepherd , which is a dilution of eumelanin that resembles a shade of blue. Clearly, the dog is not actually blue, but the bluish undertones of the gray coat make it appear so. A phenotype is what you see, while genotype represents the make-up of it. Every locus is home to two genes and their variants alleles. Depending on which two make a pair on it, different colors and patterns are created. The first locus, that determines whether red pigment will be produced, is the E locus. With the saddleback German shepherd, the presence of the dominant E allele on the E locus means that eumelanin will be produced, and the next decision will depend on the K locus. This locus A is known for its numerous alleles, so there is a particular order of dominance, as with every other location on a gene. From here on, there are two loci that will influence the sequence and coat color. The previously mentioned pairs of alleles lead to the B and D locus for information on what to do next. These two, practically, deliberate together as to how much and where the red and black pigment will be distributed. The B locus has a dominant B and recessive b allele, while the D locus has the dominant D and recessive d genes. So, where is the saddleback? Well, recent research has found that the RALY gene mutation multifunctional RNA-binding protein has been associated with saddleback coat patterns. Without its presence, the saddleback pattern does not appear. It the RALY gene has a dominant modifier, which means it will have precedence over other A locus alleles if it does occur. Due to the dominance of the RALY gene mutation, only one parent is enough for a chance of the puppy GSD to have a saddleback phenotype. There Are Other Breeds With Saddleback Patterns Photo from: savannahbordercollie Saddleback German shepherds are by no means an exclusive item in the dog world, or even the breed itself. The oldest breed known to sport this combination of saddleback with a tan base coat is the Redbone Coonhound. However, commercial genetic tests are nowadays able to detect gene mutations and the pairing of alleles on different loci. Even when only one parent has a saddleback, a portion of the litter can inherit the RALY gene and produce saddleback in the future. The only condition for a guaranteed saddleback German shepherd is that the other parent has this specific mutation, too. Still, considering how common of a coat it is, the RALY gene mutation is deeply embedded in the breed and any deviations from it are considered genetic mutations as well.
