During this week, and potentially from the week 3 mark, breeders will be introducing more solid foods to their puppies. And this means that potty training becomes more prominent in daily life. At 4 weeks, Labradoodle puppies still have a lot to learn from their mothers and from each other. But, remember that puppy coats at this stage are still very different to adult Labradoodle coats! Puppies that are 4 weeks old will still have a single layer coat that feels very fine and soft to the touch. This will eventually shed to reveal their adult coat. Other than their soft fur coats, they will have little wagging tails, floppy ears, and dark, loving eyes. And, they still have plenty of important behavioral lessons to learn from the mother and littermates. If they leave their mother at this stage, puppies can develop health issues. But, also, puppies removed from their mom too young go on to display more behavioral problems as adults. Bite inhibition is one of the most important things that a mother dog will teach her puppies, especially at 4 weeks when their teeth are really growing in. All puppies bite when teething, and whilst growing into their teenage selves. But, removing them from their mother early can make this experience a lot worse. So, wait until at least 8 weeks before bringing your Labradoodle puppy home. At 4 weeks, many breeders will be introducing their Labradoodle puppies to solid foods. In fact, some might start even earlier than 4 weeks! Most likely, they will be consuming a mix between solid foods and milk. As, they will still be feeding from their moms. Solid food will mostly come in the form of a puppy-specific, commercial food. But, in rare cases, some breeders may raw feed their puppies and dogs. Puppy food is higher in calories, to support the quick growth period that young puppies are going through. So, expect breeders to feed this rather than adult dog food. The Start of Potty Training Along with solid foods comes the need for potty training. But, instead, many breeders start using puppy pads, or an outdoor play pen, to get their brood used to the idea that their are right places and wrong places to pee. However, this is the time when most puppies receive another worming treatment. Veterinarians will only really be involved if there are any serious health issues with any of the puppies. Puppies that are 4 weeks old should not leave their mother and littermates. If a breeder tries to send you away with a 4 week puppy, walk away. It is a criminal offence to sell underage puppies in many regions, so you could also report them too the local authorities. Reputable breeders will often let you put down a deposit early on — perhaps even before the puppies are born. But, they will not let you take home Labradoodle puppies that are younger than 8 weeks old. Taking a puppy away from its mother and littermates before 4 weeks old can lead to health and behavioral problems. How many times per day should my puppy be fed? We feed puppies, weeks old 3 x per day. We try to keep them on a schedule such as: a. Once the puppy reaches 12 weeks, we cut them back to eating 2 x per day, eliminating the noon feeding. Increase the amount you feed based on the recommendations you will find on the dog food bag as suggested by weight of the puppy. We do not recommend free feeding — give your puppy about 20 minutes to eat, then pick it up and put it away. Water should be provided at all times, except during the night. Wet the food for about 30 minutes prior to giving it to the puppy so it softens to aid in digestion. However, if you see loose stools it is almost assuredly overfeeding so back it off until the stool is firm and then slowly add back in. When can I start training my puppy? We like to see training start as soon as you pick up your puppy from my home, or your puppy arrives via car or airplane. We recommend transporting your puppy home in a crate that is lined with a bath towel. Feeding time is a fantastic opportunity to train as you can spend a few minutes several times per day with teaching the basic commands of sit, stay and come. Most puppies that will mature to a medium size will need a large crate once they have reached maturity. Plastic crates are an option as well. If you have any questions please ask us. What type of collar and leash do I need and what size is best for my puppy? We like to buy the less expensive, adjustable-type of collars and a nylon leash. We do not care for the expandable leashes that allow the puppy to walk way out in front or way off to the side of you. The smallest setting for the collar would be about 8 inches and expanding out from there. We use small carabiners to attach the stretched chain between the collar and the leash. This will prevent your puppy from chewing your new leash. If you are reserving a small size pup then I would suggest an XS collar. Another option while they are very young is a slip leash style. Some families like to train in harnesses. This is also a tool you can use. Sizes will vary from company to company, but most go off of weight. Ask us the estimated weight of your future puppy at the time they will go home so you will have a rough idea of what to purchase. It is never a bad idea to weight to buy until you can size your puppy in person though as each harness will fit differently. You can play the radio softly if your puppy is in a different room from you as this is how they were raised with us. You have to find a system that works for you. Puppies will always go potty right away after they wake up and after they eat. We do not bathe our puppies unless they are dirty and we use baby shampoo or something gentle. We usually suggest people decide what they like in the look of their Labradoodle. Do you like the longer, shaggy look, or do you like the shorter, more manicured coat? If you leave the coat longer, you will need to keep it combed out and mat free. Do you have recommendations for where to stay when we pick up our puppy? We are located only 20 mins from Lebanon, Oregon. There are numerous hotel options in Albany, Springfield, or Eugene that you can explore. But in the early days, we recommend keeping them close to you at night. It will help them feel safe and cared for — leaving their litter is quite a big step, after all. Your puppy may be unsettled and will most likely need at least one bathroom break through the night. It will all be okay in a few weeks time, though. The crate should be a cozy warm den for your puppy. Soft blankets and a cuddly toy should do the trick to help them settle. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow with a tasty treat. Bits of smelly sausage or cheese will definitely do the trick. If this happens, try to keep it simple at first and just use their own kibble if they are motivated to work for it. Save the big guns in treat terms for when you really need it! How to do it Always begin training at home. The outside world is far too exciting at the moment, and your puppy will probably not focus on you. Stand in front of your pup with a treat in your hand and place the treat on their nose, then bring it up to your waist. From the training tips above, preventing resource guarding always comes down to a good swapping. Resource guarding starts when we force our dogs as puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. To avoid that, resist your temptation to reach deep inside their mouths to get whatever it is they have. Ultimately, we want our puppies to be willing to give things up when we need them to. What we really mean is care, handling, health and grooming. Start by just showing them the brush and running it over them with the apartment side so they get used to the sensation minus the bristles. Hand Touch and Handling If you handle your puppy too roughly or grab at them, not only are they going to have a bit of a fright, but it could make them feel scared about being touched in the future. Next they go from scooting to walking, and by the time they are 4 weeks old, they can usually walk pretty well although they are still a little wobbly and very uncoordinated. Their weights are charted so that we are able to determine everyone is gaining each day. Careful attention is paid to smaller pups to assure they are getting what they need. A primary focus at this stage is the health and happiness of the mother. Selective breeding, love, proper nutrition, and exercise are key ingredients that will help assure that your puppy will be just right for your family. Week Two Puppies have gained between oz. They are moving around more, but are still not able to crawl. They scoot and wiggle about to position themselves for nursing, or pile together if mom is not present. It is time to have nails trimmed for the first time. We are handling them more often- touching feet and gently working and stretching their muscles, and getting them used to the loving human touch. Mom is keeping her pups tidy and clean, and we are keeping the whelping pen and mom the same. Laundry at this point becomes daunting! Mom is wolfing down her high calorie anything and everything her heart desires; cheese, eggs, chicken livers, ice cream, and yummy puppy starter — not to mention treats! Week Three Eyes are beginning to open. All puppies are born with blue eyes. It takes another week before they are able to focus and see clearly. Useable vision is at days. Ears are beginning to open as well; noises startle pups and they are still unable to locate the source of the sound. However, exposure to sudden, loud noises at this time is essential and encouraged, as fear has not yet developed. They are getting stronger and are able to push up onto all fours, but standing is still a scary and very wobbly proposition. This week sees rapid development of motor skills. Puppies are able to move backwards as well as forward, and begin to move around quite a bit more, especially toward the end of week 3. Otherwise, they are problem solving— stimulating their learning ability. They are able to eliminate on their own now, and will be begin to move away from their nest to potty. They are also learning to walk instead of crawl. Week Four Now that the puppies have the use of all their senses, huge strides in development will begin to take place. It is at this crucial point that a breeder, knowledgeable in all aspects of behavioral development, begins increased individual attention. It becomes increasingly difficult to present more and more intense challenges and complex stimuli; a basket or pasteboard box has long since lost its thrill. More and more research backs up the conclusion that puppies raised in environments lacking challenges, are more likely to develop into fearful, less successful adults. Or, they may have dearly loved and been loved by their family who now must give them up for reasons like loss of jobs, divorce, foreclosures, deployment and the like. Because the dog is our first concern we take every precaution to help assure a good placement in your home. We have worked with hundreds of dogs over the years and will be able to guide you through this process. Please always ask the questions you are concerned about, and we promise to answer them truthfully. We will tell you about any behavior or health problems related to the dog so you can make an informed decision on whether or not it is the dog for you. This process can take a while or it can happen quickly, it is a lot like falling in love. For instance, a small puppy who needs to go out many times a day is not appropriate for a family who is gone 12 hours a day. Or a lb 2 year old who needs lots of exercise might be the perfect dog for you if you are a runner, but not if you are a couch potato. But that nice, calm 6 year old who loves to lay on furniture might be your soulmate. The volunteer will also be able to answer questions that you may have about the process, and our organization. After you are approved, your information will be sent to the placement team who will consider you for dogs that fit your needs. You will then be contacted when a dog that is a possible match is rescued. However, one thing that we see happen is that you may fall in love with a photo of one of our available dogs and decide that a 7 year old male is just what you want, when your records show you only want a year old blond female. ORG so that we will know of your interest. Once you are matched with one of our rescues, arrangements will be made for your dog to arrive at your home. Introductions, if necessary, will be made to other pets you already have. You will be given your adoption contract and pay the adoption fee at this time. However, the adoption will not be final for at least two weeks while your family and the dog adjust to one another. If for some reason, this does not turn out to be the right match, another home will be found for the dog and you will be able to either wait for another match or receive a refund. A one- or two-hour walk each day should be sufficient for burning extra fat for a breed that has a tendency to gain weight. The problem with Golden Pyrenees, or golden pyres as some call them, is that they tend to grow up to pounds heavy. Thus, you should break this habit through constant regular exercise. Take care not to expose them to heat for a long time. Give them enough water and shade too during exercise if possible. This is because they are accustomed to the colder areas of the world. Take exercise breaks too in the form of intermittent naps. This should be good enough for Golden Pyrenees puppies and adults that are used to being a couch potato. These dogs love to play outdoor games such as fetching games. They can also join you and other family members in your swimming sessions. You may also run around with them in a large and open but entirely safe place. The importance of exercise is to keep them at a healthy weight range. Your dog is most likely to get sick if they put on excess weight. If you do not want swimming or jogging long distances, you can have a variety of play activities instead, from chasing a ball to playing tug of war. The most important thing is to do your play activity early in the morning or late in the afternoon when it is not too hot for your dog. Overall, I recommend the following exercises for maximum benefit: Jogging. If a Great Pyrenees Mix takes after their Pyr parent, they will be a large, powerful, and intelligent dog that is loyal and affectionate with their families. They will also be protective of them. Great Pyrenees tend to have a calm and patient nature. Although they are a serious, focused, and independent working dog, they often have a sweet, gentle, and affectionate personality with their families. They tend to get along well with children and other pets and tend to take on a guardian role. Their protective instinct makes them wary of strangers, but they will open up once introduced as long as they have been properly socialized. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect something similar from a Great Pyrenees Mix. In addition to talking to the breeder about the other parent breed, you can also meet the mother in person. This allows you to see what her temperament is like and what behavior she is modeling for her puppies. The breeder should have started some socialization and training, but it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. A Great Pyrenees is a moderately adaptable dog. They are built to roam and wander, so do best in homes with fenced yards. They do well in the cold, but are sensitive to heat. Although they are one of the most independent dog breeds and can handle some alone time, they may become bored and destructive if left alone for too long. The other parent breed will introduce their own quirks and traits that may affect adaptability, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. You also want to be aware of any potential quirks you should be prepared for in a Great Pyrenees Mix. Just as they could inherit none of the conditions common to their parents, they could inherit some or all of them. Good breeding practices make a huge difference. From the Pyr side, potential health conditions to be aware of in a Great Pyrenees Mix include patellar luxation, elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, eye conditions, and some types of cancer. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies, so make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. As a large dog breed, the Great Pyrenees can be at risk for bloat, which means a Great Pyrenees Mix may also be at risk for bloat in dogs. A Great Pyrenees is an independent work dog that is used to making their own decisions and working without guidance. Because of this, they are a better fit for experienced owners. Even if the other parent breed is a good fit for first-time dog owners, you need to be prepared for the potential of a Great Pyrenees Mix that may be a challenge to train. Being prepared to enroll in puppy training classes and to enlist the help of a professional trainer is a good idea with this mix. A Great Pyrenees Mix can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or one that is a mix of both. If they inherit a Pyr coat, they will shed year-round and more heavily when seasons change. Weekly brushing, brushing a few times a week during seasonal shedding, and the occasional bath are enough to keep a Pyr coat healthy. Nail trims once or twice monthly are usually enough to keep them from growing too long. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Brushing teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste daily along with cleanings at the vet when needed can help prevent dental disease later in life. The Great Pyrenees may be a working dog and need a job to do, but they sit in a more moderate activity range. Daily walks plus some activity to get them moving are usually enough. If the other parent breed has a higher or lower activity range, you will need to be prepared for that potential range in a Great Pyrenees Mix. They were most likely this breed's direct ancestors. They did have a very short coat, in fact the name for these specifically short haired dogs was lo chiang sze and later became lo-sze. Due to its ancestry, this breed is often referred to by its nickname of the Chinese Pug. Stepping ahead in history, In , this breed became the official canine of Dutch royalty. They were considered to be very special, often brought along to important events such as royal ceremonies. This breed remained popular as time went on, Napoleon and his wife owned one in .They were brought to American after the time of the Civil War. The breed was perfected and now the Pug as we know him today is popular all over the world. There are rumors that still persist today that during the 's, there were long haired variations to be found. However, there are no records of any photographs. NOTE: Updated information: We may have found several long haired Pugs despite the evidence that he can't exist, more ahead. During all of these time periods, there were no offspring that had long coats, at least none that were purebred. And the Search Continues.As we search for what type of dog may be considered a very rare, long haired versions of our beloved Pug, we have found a couple of things that may be what is causing this potential phenomenon and persistent rumors that such a canine exists: Two different physical traits may be confused with a long coat: Pug with a very long, uncurled tail; not a long-haired Pug, but may be one reason for the term. Thickness of the Fur- This breed does have short hair, however its density can vary. Most have 2 layers of hair, an undercoat and an overcoat. Both are short and thick and tend to shed quite a bit. She is half Pug and half Pomeranian. We are not sure why anyone would want to mix those 2 purebreds, however this is the end result. The Pom has a famously thick double coat, the outer layer is long and creates an appearance of a "ball of fluff".That breed is famous for its coat. Therefore, when bred together with a Pug, the offspring can be similar to this dog that you see here. The face is flat, the ears look about right, the body is short and stocky.How Another Breed in the Bloodline can Cause a Pug to Have a Long Coat When a puppy is born, it carries traits not only from its parents, but can also show traits going back, normally 5 generations, and sometimes more. Therefore, when 2 Pugs are bred and the resulting litter produces a puppy with long hair, one may automatically jump to the conclusion that they have produced the much sought after and mysterious long haired Pug. However, if any of the dogs withing those 5 generations back were not purebred Pugs and just 1 of them was a breed with a long coat, this can jump generations and cause the puppy to have that characteristic. Without carefully planned breeding, it is possible for a dog that looks exactly like a purebred to have a longer coat.But it will be there due to a deviation from purebred breeding somewhere down the line, most often within the last 5 generations. There is also the possibility that 2 dogs, a Pug and another with a long coat are bred together and the resulting litter holds some puppies that have much more of the Pug appearance that that of the other dog. That puppy may then be sold as a Pug, when it is indeed not a purebred. If registered with the CKC Continental Kennel Club or other canine registry other than those that have strict guidelines, papers may misleadingly back up the claims of being purebred. Is he living proof of an actual long haired purebred Pug dog? Let's look into this further.Dyanne last name withheld for privacy reasons , the owner of this Pug had seen what appeared to be a long-haired Pug at a farmer's market that was adorable. That dog's owner stated the dog was a purebred, though did not mention where he was obtained from. But this made her wish for that type of dog. A few month later, in search of a Pug, Dyanne contacted 2 breeders. When one of the breeder's had a litter and told Dyanne that some of the pups had curiously longer coats than normal, that sealed the deal! She went over and choose the one that she wanted. While looking over the litter, she did notice that the ones with longer coats appeared to be slightly larger than the short coated puppies. It is said that he came from a litter of 7 puppies, 3 of which had long coats. When he and the other pups with longer fur were born, the breeder was surprised and contacted the owner of the stud dog. She was told that the stud dog's grandmother had a long coat. Very interesting is the fact that this dog is registered with the AKC as a purebred. Here is a screenshot of the AKC registration with personal information blocked out. So, what we can say for a fact is that this dog - clearly with longer fur than a standard Pug should have - is registered as a purebred. However, we must mention the following is possible: 1 All AKC breeders are on the honor system regarding the parents of a puppy. In other words, if a breeder owns 2 purebreds and the purebred dam accidentally mates with a stray dog, a breeder technically can tell the AKC that the purebred sire is the father and without DNA testing - which is voluntary on the breeder's behalf - the AKC will trust the breeder. If so, the gene for the long hair jumped many generations. Since the great-grandmother of this Pug is said to have had long hair, perhaps that dog's grandparent was a different breed or something to this effect. Do, however, note that a 4th or 5th generation mixed dog can be extremely close to being a purebred. Your puppy will be testing the limits and may start showing dominance, ignoring known commands, and asserting more independence. However, if they are outside of that spectrum, you might want to consider seeing a specialist as your dog might have some underlying health issues. As a very rough guide, many Labrador puppies will weigh around a kilo for every week of their lives. So you would expect a ten week puppy to weigh something in the region of ten kilos or around twenty-two pounds. A twenty percent variation around this would be fairly normal.
