His left hind leg stuck out slightly when sitting, and the nails on his left paw would wear down quicker than usual.When he stood still he sometimes would knuckle his paw, which is a symptom of DM. Having had Simon affected by DM, we were very aware of these symptoms. Q: Can you please give us a recap of how this was diagnosed? A: Roscoe's primary vet Barry Browning of Sag Harbor, NY who also took care of Simon knew Roscoe from puppyhood, and knowing Roscoe's health so well, diagnosed him after running different tests. A: DM affects the dog starting from the back legs moving forward, and after Roscoe lost feeling of both hind quarters in the summer of - becoming basically immobile - I started researching dog wheelchairs. We were hesitant at first being unsure if it was a good idea: would he be able to use it.But after adjusting the wheelchair to his body with a few snacks in hand , it took him only a few minutes to realize that he could walk on his own again. First day with his wheelchair In no time Roscoe was racing through the backyard with such ease that it brought tears to my eyes seeing the dog's happiness. After that, nothing stopped him anymore from hitting the roads, 'rolling' through the fields, exploring his beloved beach.And, it's really sad to know that the prognosis for DM is typically listed as 'grave'. What prognosis did Roscoe's vet offer? A: Unfortunately we knew already from the experience with Simon who passed away in , that there is no cure for DM. We were told by the neurologist who sees many of these cases that Roscoe could reach the final stage of the disease in as little as 3 months, or up to 2 years. DM can progress rapidly or gradually, there is no telling which way it goes. The only solace is that it is a 'pain-free' disease. Q: Your experience with this and everything you guys have done to care for both Simon and Roscoe could really help other Boxer owners who are going through this same thing. What advice can you give to other owners in regard to caring for a Boxer dog with DM? A: As dire as the prognosis is, you will experience another level of bonding with your companion through the different stages of the DM. It is very important that you keep the dog moving as muscle athropy is a part of the disease which will become prominent, so the more you can keep the activity level up as long as possible - without stressing the dog - the better it is for him. To prevent injuries to his paws while dragging them during the early stage of DM, dog boots will be a big help. It will take a few pairs to find the right fit. We found a rear lifting harness very useful as support for when he started to get weaker and had trouble keeping his balance while walking. Finally, when it gets to the point where the dog gets too heavy for you to support him by the harness due to him getting weaker and weaker next to losing the feel of his legs, try out a dog wheelchair which may get your dog back to running on his own for a while to still enjoy life! Unfortunately there comes the day when the dog is totally immobile and has to get carried around the house. This syndrome, when present in puppies, can have a rather dramatic and certainly worrying presentation. However, in most cases, there is no need to worry as surgery is rarely needed to fix the issue s at hand. Ensuring the puppy is fed a balanced diet from commercial dog food, enjoys regular exercise on non-slippers surfaces, and has regular physiotherapy particularly in those puppies who suffer from secondary contractures is the best way to address the symptoms caused by carpal laxity. Many dogs recover in a matter of weeks. The cause is not known but may be related to unbalanced growth, poor muscle tone, or weakness between the flexor and extensor muscle groups. Improper exercise, poor footing eg, slippery surfaces , inappropriate nutrition, and genetics have also been implicated. Exercise and commercially available balanced diets without any other treatment is usually enough to achieve physical and functional recovery. Male puppies seem to more affected due to their more rapid growth. Age of presentation is usually 6 to 16 weeks; dogs may be unilaterally or bilaterally affected. While all breeds can be affected, large breeds tend to be affected more often than small breeds In rescue puppies, this condition can typically be seen where a puppy has come into care suffering from malnutrition. When malnourished puppies suddenly start getting quality nutrition, this can lead to rapid growth which can trigger the condition, it is therefore recommended that such puppies are not over-fed to put on weight. Sometimes this condition is simply unavoidable in malnourished puppies as the processes have already begun when they come into care. The first red flag is often the twisting of toes, this is the ligament laxity beginning and whilst some puppies will not advance past this stage, this is your red flag that something isn't right and that you need to have a look at diet and environment if the puppy hasn't been malnourished. Chubby aka overweight puppies are at higher risk of developing this condition, it is very important to grow puppies lean especially large-giant breed puppies. Balanced diets are very important for these puppies, whether that be a puppy kibble or a balanced commercially available raw diet suitable for puppies. It is important you see your Vet so your Vet can monitor your puppy, it is unlikely your Vet will recommend anything too different to what we are but your Vet is an important partner in your dogs recovery. Whilst the condition is generally self-limiting, affected puppies should only ever be on surfaces they can grip, this means they should not be slippery surfaces such as floorboards etc. Taking an affected puppy on a walk is not appropriate nor is physical play. Puppies who are knuckling over should be kept in warm environments as cold weather can worsen the condition. Should splints be used in more severe cases? There is no right, or wrong answer here - there are 2 studies looking at both options and both options were successful. Many Vets will ask for the dogs to be left without splints but restricted to a safe area not a crate or pen with appropriate flooring with the hope that within weeks the condition will rectify. Whereas other Vets, will want to splint for anywhere between days to get on top of the condition quickly. Long term use of splints is not appropriate unless absolutely necessary as it will lead to muscle atrophy. Splints can sometimes be tricky to keep on and some dogs may object and bite at the bandages keeping the splints in place. The puppy may also start to knuckle again after the splints come off. The families Vet can show them how to do this or a referral to an Animal Physiotherapist can be given. But sometimes—especially if it lasts for more than 48 hours—diarrhea can be a sign of an underlying health problem. Figuring out the true underlying cause of dog diarrhea can be tricky, even for a specialist. Fortunately, a gut health analysis can often uncover vital clues. Loose stool can be a minor event or a serious condition. Diarrhea can be acute meaning that it begins rather suddenly and lasts more than 48 hours or chronic lasting more than three weeks, sometimes varying in intensity from day to day. Sometimes the reason for it is obvious, but often the exact cause can be surprisingly difficult to identify. Here are some of the most common causes of diarrhea in dogs. Something Your Dog Ate In any case of digestive upset, it makes sense to look first at what your dog has been eating. A food intolerance or food allergy is another possibility. Diarrhea is an adaptation that helps scavenging animals get rid of the toxins and pathogens such material can contain. In many of these cases, the diarrhea will resolve itself in a day or two. But if you believe your dog has eaten something poisonous including chocolate , see your veterinarian immediately. That redistribution of blood flow also raises the core body temperature and produces fluctuations in certain hormones. All of these changes can contribute to acute diarrhea. Exercising in hot weather is sometimes a sufficient cause in itself, since diarrhea and nausea are common reactions to overheating. Parasites and Pathogens Intestinal parasites—such as Giardia, tapeworms, hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms—are well-known to cause diarrhea in dogs. So are pathogens like the bacteria Clostridioides difficile C. Take a poop sample to your veterinarian for parasite and pathogen screening. Antibiotic-associated diarrhea can be reduced, and even prevented with taking the probiotic yeast, S. Bacterial infections as well as viral infections —such as the canine parvovirus parvo —can lead to diarrhea. So can hormonal imbalances and even some cancers. Diarrhea may point to acute disease of the liver, pancreas, or kidneys. Small Intestine vs. Large Intestine Large Intestine Diarrhea Large intestine diarrhea tends to involve more frequent bowel movements. The stool is semi-formed and may contain mucus or flecks of red blood. You might notice your dog straining, looking painful, or trying repeatedly to poop without producing much. Small Intestine Diarrhea With small intestine diarrhea, the stool piles or puddles are typically larger than normal. Particles that would normally be absorbed by the small intestine instead pass on into the large intestine, pulling water along with them and creating a larger volume of poop. Small intestine diarrhea tends to be less frequent, with no urgency and usually no visible blood. Small intestine diarrhea is more likely to be accompanied by vomiting, nutrient deficiencies, and weight loss. If blood is present, it is dark and tarry because it has been digested, unlike the fresh blood found in large intestine diarrhea. You may think of diarrhea as watery puddles, but completely liquid poop is really just one end of the scale. Diarrhea can refer to a range of consistencies, from moist but distinct piles to shapeless blobs to puddles. Dog Poop Color Chart Brown. Yellow or gray dog poop can point to serious health issues, such as diseases of the liver, pancreas, or gallbladder. Such diseases can affect the amount of bile being produced and how the bile is being processed in the intestines. Yellow poop may also arise from a food sensitivity; excess mucus or fat can give poop a yellow hue. Green stool may mean your dog has been eating a lot of grass , possibly as a reaction to an upset stomach. Diseases of the liver or pancreas can also cause green poop. Or your dog might have eaten something that contained green food coloring. Poop with a shiny or oily-looking surface may contain excess mucus, which can be caused by inflammation of the large intestine colitis. Pale, clay-colored. Pale or clay-colored dog feces may also indicate problems with the digestion of fats, usually due to a lack of bile. Blue colored poop should always be treated as an emergency, because it may indicate that your dog ingested rat poison. Most often occurring in smaller breeds, HGE requires prompt medical attention. However, eating beets which are totally benign can also cause pink poop. Red streaks. Infectious diseases like parvovirus, anal gland sac infections, and parasites like whipworms and hookworms are all possible causes. An ingested foreign object scraping the intestinal lining on its way out can also cause bleeding. Stool that is very dark or black may contain digested blood, possibly from ulcers in the stomach or small intestine. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are the most common cause of ulcers in dogs. Any signs of distress - pacing, restlessness, panicked behavior High fever - anything above .Allergies can cause additional symptoms, such as dry flaky skin, and hot spots. A few Boxers have had issues with chicken, beef, fish or eggs. In addition, certain spices can trigger an allergy, as well as soy, wheat, or other grains. Intestinal parasites: Here's something we never want, but it happens. Giardia or Coccidia can cause diarrhea. Giardia is a small parasite; kin to an ameba and this protozoan is not friendly. It's typically transmitted through water, in a puddle or other contaminated water. Even river or lake water on a hiking trip, and on rare occasions tap water can carry this parasite. This parasite causes gas and lots of diarrhea. Because the parasite runs in a cycle; it can seem to go away, and then come back, over and over again with almost IBS Irritable Bowel Syndrome type symptoms. It has a treatment available by the veterinarian if your dog has contracted it. Coccidia, which also causes diarrhea in dogs, is a different parasite and has a different treatment than giardia. Canines can contract this parasite via contact with infected feces, or sometimes from their mother. That doesn't mean the breeder or shelter wasn't clean, just that coccidia is a sneaky and resilient parasite. Coccidia is often carried by birds and passes in their droppings onto lawns, parking lots, and other areas of the flyover. It's highly recommended to watch what your Boxer is doing. Don't let them eat feces, sniff or lick at it. Protect them from puddles and melting ice. A few other parasites that can cause diarrhea in puppies, or in some cases adult canines, are roundworms, whipworms, hookworms, and threadworms. Ingesting something they are sensitive to: A canine's palate isn't the same as ours. Some dogs think that garbage, trash, decaying leaves, dead mice or birds, plants, and grasses are all things meant to be eaten. And, these can all upset the digestive system or be mildly to severely toxic. Infection and diseases: A lot of acute cases of diarrhea with dogs are caused by a minor bacterial infection that runs its course over a couple of days and then resolves. However, there are other more serious issues that can be at play. This includes: Campylobacteria, seen most often with young pups up to 6 months old. About half of all dogs carry this can be carriers that are healthy, but can pass this on. It's most often picked up when a dog eats the feces of another dog. While the top sign is diarrhea, there can also be straining during bowel movements, fever, vomiting, and enlarged lymph nodes. Inflammatory bowel disease which is catch-all term that is given if a dog has ongoing, chronic diarrhea linked to one of several conditions including allergies, parasites, lowered immune system, and some diseases including colitis. Diagnosing this includes blood testing, urinalysis, stool testing, and other tests. Antibiotics, corticosteroids, and medications to protect the lining of the intestines may be given. In many cases, a change to a different food which includes a switch in both protein and carb sources can help. Other less common but possible reasons for diarrhea include kidney disease, liver disease, cancer , lymphangiectasia, pancreatitis, and hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Elements to Help Decipher Diarrhea Issues Color, smell, and consistency are all clues: Tarry, sticky black stools can point to upper GI bleeding and warrants an immediate vet visit. Red or red spotting in stools often points to bleeding in the lower GI tract. In those cases, the blood can be coming from small tears or rips in the anus. Yellow or green loose stools. With a puppy, yellow can point to coccidia. Otherwise, yellow or green indicates that food is passing through too quickly to digest completely. Gray can point to a liver-related issue. Foam seen in the diarrhea tends to point to a bacterial infection. Greasy diarrhea can mean the pancreas is having a problem. Give the stomach a break. If diarrhea is moderate to severe, you can withhold food for 24 hours. Do give supplements ; see below. Keep your Boxer hydrated. A lot of water is lost even with one episode of diarrhea. When the ability to drink fluids fast enough to compensate for the water loss is insufficient, dehydration can result. This is of particular concern for Boxer puppies and senior Boxer dogs, but is applicable to dogs of all ages. Try some organic chicken broth. After 12 to 24 hours, start your Boxer on a bland diet. This is typically just 1 protein and 1 starch. One of the most tolerated combinations is plain, white, skinless chicken breast diced small and plain white rice or plain oatmeal. However, lean beef and sweet potato are other good options. If you offer chicken, the broth from boiling the chicken is good for your Boxer to drink after it cools to a warm temperature. After 3 days, start to transition back to a regular diet or a new, better food if that was decided. By then, the body should be well-rested. Extra Tips What about Pepto Bismol? This is safe to give to most dogs. However, check with your vet. Some recommend not giving this, in order to allow the body to expel stools as it needs to. But, in some cases, if a dog, especially a puppy, is overwhelmingly stressed, and this can help control diarrhea to some degree. Do not give this to a Boxer that is pregnant or to any dog that is allergic to silicates. The typical dosing is 1 teaspoon for each 20 pounds. You can use this every 6 hours for up to 48 hours. Your vet may suggest a slightly stronger dose. Altering sleeping or living arrangements. When you have to go, you have to go, and your Boxer can't always get there in time. If that is happening to your Boxer puppy, pee pads placed over the floor of a pen or gated off area are a blessing. During this time avoid additional stress for your Boxer. At this time, Boxers don't need playtime with small children; it burns energy, and their reserves are low when dealing with diarrhea. Sore Rear-ends. Puppies and dogs can have red, irritated behinds from the change in acidity from diarrhea. They may lick their behind due to the irritation which only exacerbates the problem. This product is healing, disinfecting and completely safe to use. It doesn't hurt or sting. After cleaning the area with this product, organic coconut oil can be applied. It melts quickly and is a natural antibiotic, and it is very soothing. If you put it on first, then you can't use the Vetericyn afterward as the coconut oil also acts as a bit of a seal. Alternatively, you can cut open a Vitamin E gel tabs. The contents are liquid and slightly sticky. Apply the vitamin liquid to the irritated skin. If you don't see some improvement in 24 hours, broken skin around the anus may have developed an infection. The good news is that if you used Vetericyn, that risk is somewhat mitigated. Otherwise, you may need your vet to prescribe an antibacterial gel, sometimes an antibiotic shot, and occasionally a cone if you have a persistent licker. Boxers with degenerative myelopathy can become paralyzed by the disease. There is no cure for degenerative myelopathy. But if your Boxer has the disease, there are a few things you can do to help them suffer less. Kinesiology tape has been used successfully to help dogs with degenerative myelopathy. A dog that spends lots of time lying down is at risk of bedsores. Boxers that become partially paralyzed by degenerative myelopathy are candidates for wheelchairs. Dog wheelchairs can help to slow down the progression of degenerative myelopathy by removing stress on the joints and allowing more mobility and exercise. Both stress and lack of exercise can contribute greatly to the progression of the disease. Boxers with Bloat Bloat, or gastric dilation , is another health risk that boxers are more likely to suffer from than other dogs. Bloat is a potentially fatal stomach condition that is common in large dogs with deep chests, like boxers and shepherds. Bloat is caused by unhealthy eating habits: if a Boxer eats one large meal a day, or eats too quickly, they run the risk of bloat. If you notice your dog likes to scarf its food, you can give it smaller meals throughout the day. Also, make sure your Boxer does not run around or get over-excited within an hour or two of meals.
