They do bark to sound the alert, but are even tempered on the whole. English Springer Spaniels are friendly and playful. They are also known for being hardworking, steady, and obedient to a point. Springador dogs are incredibly driven when it comes to prey, due to their working roots. Novice handlers find it hard to control them outdoors or under distracting conditions. You should avoid casual walks off leash unless you have taught them to come when called in every scenario. Recall is everything and takes a long time to proof with a dog this driven. Your Springador will have lots of energy, be prone to noise and sadly nervous aggression too in some working lines. Stamina is a key part of their personality. Springador Training All dogs can benefit from basic obedience training and socialization at an early age. They are easy to train, and react well to positive reinforcement. Springer Spaniels especially are very energetic and have a high prey drive, which means they should get recall training from a young age. Springadors can be headstrong! These dogs, because of their Labrador blood, will pull on the leash if possible, so training them not to do that will help save your arm! Also, Labradors stay puppy-like for a long time. This is another good reason to train your Springadors. You may wish to consider advanced training — agility, or therapy, for your Springador. They like to work, and their high activity levels make this good enrichment for them. Springador Exercise A small apartment may not be the best place for your Springador. With so much energy to spare, they really need space to roam. Their minds must also be exercised, so we do recommend agility training or retriever training to keep them stimulated. Springer Spaniels especially are not happy when left alone much, so you should take that into account as well. Springador Parent Health Tests Because Labs and Springer Spaniels are prone to similar inherited diseases, you might not see the health advantages as much in the Labrador x Springer cross as with others. The pups of any mixed breed dog will have similar concerns to their parents, so keep that in mind as you shop for Springadors. But it is impossible to know exactly how those health problems will manifest in a cross-bred puppy. It is important, always, to have a health screening for your dog, and to know its family health history whenever possible. Make sure that both parents have good hip scores, clear eye tests and are PRA clear. The Lab parent should also have good elbow scores. However, in general, both dogs are robust and healthy breeds. You could get more Lab, or you could get more Springer Spaniel qualities. This goes for their health issues, their temperament, and their physiology. Springador Rescue If you are willing and able to rescue a Springador, rescues do exist. You may also be able to fix a mix inside a shelter, too. You will also have less choice when it comes to age, gender, and other aspects of your new dog. Training or re-training may be required. If you want to rescue a Springador, you may have to be patient to find the right animal for you and your family. The dog you want might not be waiting in a shelter yet.

For instance, their squished face can cause breathing problems, which is obviously bad if they were a working breed. However, it is an attractive feature for many people looking for a companion animal. Socialization is much more important than breed alone. If you never introduce your Pug to a cat and then suddenly bring one home, they will likely not get along very well. Instead, it is important for your Pug to be allowed around cats as a puppy. This will allow them to learn how to act around cats when they are very impressionable. Friendly cats who are around dogs often are the best option, as they provide your canine with a positive experience. However, socialization is important if you truly want them to get along with cats. This is probably one of the better breeds for homes with cats simply due to their small size and low prey drive. You introduce cats to Pugs just like any other canine. You want to start slow, even if your dog has been around cats before. Here is a short breakdown of how to introduce your Pug to a cat: Confine your cat to a room. The cat should have everything they need in this room, as they should stay in it exclusively for at least a week. This is important to ensure that they are comfortable in their new home before the dog is involved. Plus, it also gives you time to slowly introduce your dog to them. Use smell. Find things that both your cat and dog use regularly that may carry their scent. This can include blankets, mats under food bowls , and beds. The point is that they smell like your animal. Start introductions slowly. Throughout the first week, you should allow your cat and dog to see each other in a controlled manner. Firstly, you may simply want to crack open the door and allow your dog to peek at your cat inside. Then, you can open the door all the way with your dog on a leash. Be sure that both animals are comfortable the whole time. Use treats for both animals as they exhibit the correct behaviors. One of the worst mistakes pet parents make when introducing a cat to a Pug is moving too fast. If the dog chases the cat once, it is more likely that they will do it again. Plus, it may permanently make your cat fearful of the dog, which can cause its own problems. You should avoid setting up your animals for failure. Take it as slowly as they need. Socialization is the most important factor in determining whether or not your specific Pug likes cats or not. However, how you introduce the two particular animals also matters. If you move too quickly, you can make them fearful of each other. Once a dog gets used to chasing a particular cat, it is difficult to make them stop. Can a Pug Kill a Cat? Assuming the cat is healthy and not declawed, they can generally hold their own. If the Pug has their mindset out on catching the cat, they very well might. You should not leave your cat alone with your Pug if they cannot be trusted. However, if your Pug always wants to chase your cats, you probably want to separate them. With that said, injured cats and kittens are more vulnerable to these dogs. For this reason, you should avoid leaving these cats alone with these dogs at all. If the Pug was socialized with cats, they might very well get along fine with the kitten. This assumes you introduce them correctly, of course. Otherwise, the cat may become fearful of the Pug, and the Pug may get in the habit of chasing them around. However, you should never leave a Pug alone with a kitten. They can easily injure a kitten if they get too excited. They may not even mean to harm the kitten but may accidentally do so when playing. For this reason, supervision is absolutely required. You should put your kitten in their safe room when you can keep an eye on them. Final Thoughts Pugs are one of the better breeds for cats. They get along with cats much better than other breeds due to their low prey drive. It largely depends on their level of socialization. If you want your Pug to get along with cats, we highly recommend socializing them with cats at a young age. If you already have a cat and are considering adopting a Pug, then the dog will get plenty socialized with your cats. However, we also recommend socializing them with other cats, as this can be helpful if you adopt a new cat in the future. Otherwise, they may just learn to get along with your specific cat, not cats as a whole. We do recommend this breed for households with cats. Just understand that socialization does matter. Can they really get along? Are they total opposites? For pug owners, kitties may present some specific concerns eye injuries, chasing each other, different energy levels, among other issues…. So how can you help cats and pugs get along? Once you bring home your pug, watch your kitty closely for changes in their eating, drinking and litter box habits. Often going outside the box can be an indication they have a urinary infection or are experiencing stress. Your vet can help you troubleshoot the situation and help everyone feel better. Never punish any pet for an accident! Make Cat and Dog Introductions a Positive Experience When you introduce your pug and kitty, make sure your pug is tired. Take her on plenty of walkies, and perhaps even a trip to the dog park, before she spends time with your kitty. Have your pug on a leash, and under your control at all times. Offer plenty of tasty treats, calm words and pets to make it a positive experience. Never leave them alone unattended and never force your pets to spend time together. If either pet shows signs of stress, or if your pug is getting too close for comfort, end the meet and greet. Keep introductions short and sweet so no one feels overwhelmed. Create a Calm Environment for Your Cat Use a calming plug-in like the Feliway multi-cat , which releases pheromones to help soothe your kitty. This is a homeopathic medication that is safe for animals but check with your vet first, of course. If your pug is particularly lively, you may want to try a Thundershirt to help calm them, or try one for your cat. Avoid loud noises, major changes in routine and other disruptions for your cat. Remember, that cats love routine and calm. We currently have three pugs and four cats. The pugs hangout downstairs and everyone is just fine. Everyone is living their best independent lives. Your pug may even chase your new kitty. He thinks this is the best playmate ever but your new cat is traumatized this often happens if you bring home an older, less-playful cat! OR it can work in reverse--your new kitten wants to play play play and your senior pug just wants to be left alone. How can you help everyone get along? Well, first, follow the introduction rules above, for both pets. Treat your resident pet like the special friend they are. Offer lots of playtime and plenty of snackies. Introducing a new kitten to a resident pug is easier than the reverse, but there are a few issues to watch. BUT not only is this extremely gross, but it can lead to parasites and illness. This means you have to be extremely diligent about scooping, especially if your kitten is just learning the ropes of how to use the potty box. You may wish to try a covered litter box , which can keep pugs away from poo snacks until you can scoop. Kitten Claws are Sharp and Pug Eyes are Vulnerable This is one of the most frightening aspects of introducing your pug and kitten. Unfortunately, eye problems are a fact of pug health. Cats paws are essentially snipped off at the bone imagine your fingers being cut off below the first knuckle. This can lead to ongoing health issues for your cat, including arthritis and litter box issues because it hurts to scratch. Keep cats claws trimmed up regularly. One wonderful solution to the cat claw dilemma is a product called Soft Paws. When you are away from home, you should always offer your cat plenty of spots where they can retreat if they need to get away from your pug. Make sure they can navigate safely to their food and water dish, sleep area, play area, and litter box without braving their way through pug territory. Baby gates offer a great solution to partition off areas of your home and keep your pug from chasing down the cat. Keep your dog safely in their kennel at night to give everyone a break from the chase. Offer your cat a high cat tree where they can hang out with lots of hiding nooks and play spaces. If your pug seems to have a lot of energy, especially when it comes to the cat, see if you can find positive ways to help them burn off steam. Take them for walks, introduce them to playmates at the dog park, play dates or doggie daycare. Better yet channel those pug smarts by enrolling in a manners class. Teach your pug basic behaviors and commands. Pugs might be goofballs, but they love to please! They take orders very well, and can be trained as therapy pets to visit the elderly or those with special needs. Give the cat a break and teach your pug some new tricks. Cats and dogs can certainly live together. There are so many homeless pets in the world looking for a loving spot to call their own. Many local rescues and Humane Societies offer classes and seminars to help you deal with behavior challenges. Believe it or not--cats and dogs can learn to get along!

You can see several examples of our amazing Merle Bernedoodles below. Where does the merle gene come from and how it got in the poodle gene pool? I get this question all the time. I have done a lot of study of the merle gene in the poodle gene pool and believe that it was not caused by introducing another breed into the gene pool but, in fact, it is a mutation that occurred naturally. Merle is probably the most mis-understood and hotly debated dilution gene in the poodle. Many believe it must be a recessive gene because it doesn't affect the appearance of red, apricot and red or diluted colors such as blues and silvers. In addition, it can be hard to see or not evident at all on black and brown dogs cryptic. Not only is its appearance illusive to breeders but it has confused scientists and it is still not completely understood. The merle pattern has been studied many times and the last study released in emphatically stated that merle was caused by a mutation in the gene called SILV or PMEL.The research was believed to be so solid that tests were offered to breeders to identify Merle in their dogs. However, as of March the company who owned the patent for the test, Idexx, stopped offering tests as they discovered the scientists identified the wrong gene. SILV is not responsible for merle. The gene they decided was merle SILV actually turned out to be for a form of piebaldism- not merle. One theory is that piebaldism may be issue when connected to merle- or it may be piebaldism itself that is the issue. Another theory is "The Misidentification Theory. However, it is said - rightly so - that merles have often been misidentified as other colors. Then there is the "The Cryptic Merle" theory. This theory is actually a subcategory of the Misidentification Theory. Merle is what is called a "modifier. If merle acts on a black coat, the result is blue merle. If it acts on a chocolate coat, the result is red merle. And so on. The final theory I have is that that merles have been in the breed and that mere is a "natural" occuring pattern in the breed, and that merles have often been misidentified as other colors. When I called AKC to register Chuck and asked about the color code to give him they said to give him code and This refers to a a red and white dog with black markings. This leads me to believe that when looking at the color pedigree 5 or 10 generations back you would not know if the dog was actually a merle or a parti meaning merle could be in the pedigree without proper identification. Merle can affect all coat colors. The merle forms of brown and black are usually called "red" though this is not correct; red and merle are genetically different and "blue" as patches of blue are formed throughout the coat. Merle is a dilution gene just like the blue, chocolate in a traditional color but without the color of blue DNA. Merle has its own colours and DNA; a blue merle is a dog who has blue patches on its body, red and some are chocolate or "cookies and cream". Dogs who are recessive red can still be affected by merle, but the patches are either hardly seen or, if the dog is a clear recessive red, are not visible at all. Combinations such as brindle merle exist, but are rare. In addition to altering base coat color, merle also modifies eye color and coloring on the nose and paw pads. The merle gene modifies the dark pigment in the eyes, occasionally changing dark eyes to blue, or part of the eye to be colored blue. Since merle causes random modifications, however, both dark-eyed, blue-eyed, and odd-colored eyes are possible. Color on paw pads and nose may be mottled pink and black. Color on the nose may be black, blue, or red. You can see a perfect example of a chocolate merle in our stud Chuck. Merle Bernedoodles What is a Merle Bernedoodle? What are the most common Merle patterns in Bernedoodles? How is a Merle Bernedoodle produced? Merle is a term used to describe the pattern of a dogs coat. Merle is a dilution gene, that is, it lightens whatever the coat color would otherwise have been. The lightening is not spread evenly over the coat, but leaves patches of undiluted color scattered over the dog's body. Also, the lightening seems to work primarily on the black pigment in the coat. Merle refers to the pattern in the coat and is not a color as such. The white and gray patterns that appear on a black make them appear to have a blueish cast. These are called blue merles. Merle is a color combination in dogs' coats. Although most breeds that can have merle coats also typically have white markings such as around the neck, under the belly, and so on , and often tan points typically between the white and the darker parts of the coat , these are separate colors from the merle; some dogs do appear completely merled with no white or tan markings. They should be able to produce their pedigrees as well, and should have both parents on site so you can see how they react to you. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding.We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. If you're looking for a smaller standard Bernedoodle these would be a great option. Pictures are posted below with the other pictures. I would like to think so, but if you do not plan on being with your bernedoodle and keeping it with you, in your home, as part of your home, this is definitely not the dog for you. They thrive on being with the family and not isolated we believe this is the case for all dogs, and especially bernedoodles. Any of our puppies kept in a permanent kennel situation, on a tether, or the like, will violate the terms and conditions of our puppy contract and will have to render the puppy or dog back to Premier Doodles see puppy contract in link above. We definitely support crate training, but these dogs are not meant to live their life in a crate nor kennel! If you want a pet that prefers to be in isolation, you may want to consider a nonsocial pet perhaps a Betta fish! Yes we have done a lot of the hard work the first 8 weeks as we do extensive early neurological stimulation bio-sensor and Puppy Culture program, along with starting crate training and housebreaking, BUT, they are puppies and will need your undivided attention for the next weeks as they work towards being completely housebroken and earning more privileges. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. Below is a general guide to what different colors look like that we produce. Not every litter we have will have every one of these colors. We always know the color possibilities with each parent pairing based on their genetic panels and list them for the planned litter. Producing merle puppies is something we do very carefully and with a full understanding of coat genetics. Red We love our red Bernedoodles! They can range anywhere from a light strawberry blonde, to a deep red color. Phantom Very similar to tri colored, just less white and more brown! Phantoms can have large abstract white markings on their chest and feet, or no white at all. This change happens because when they are born most of their little hairs have dark tips on them even the hairs that are not truly dark all the way to the base. Then as their coat grows out, and especially after getting their first haircut, all those tips are trimmed off revealing their true color. Chocolates can come in all the same color patterns as their black counterparts listed above. Each pup is uniquely marked! Parti can happen to any of the above colors, and is a coat trait we can test for in the parents. So we always know if there is a chance of parti puppies in a litter. Now that we produce primarily multigens, we do not often have parti puppies. As we combine two different purebred dogs, there are so many possible variations and outcomes! Of course, a Bernedoodle puppy will inherit its traits and characteristics from its lineage. The traditional Bernese Mountain Dog coat features a solid jet black base color with white and rust or tan markings. The tan and rust markings are usually present above the eyes, on the cheeks, on each side of the chest, on the legs, and under the tail. The white markings are found on the muzzle, between the eyes, on the chest, neck, and paws. Bernese Mountain Dog Poodle Colors Poodles, on the other hand, most commonly come in a variety of solid colors, such as black, blue, gray, silver, brown, red, apricot, cream, cafe au lait, silver beige, and white. In addition to that, Poodles can also come with different color combinations like black and brown, black and tan, black and apricot, black and cream, brown and apricot, brown and white, and other combinations of the more common solid colors. As you might guess, black and white Bernedoodles have a black solid dominant color and white markings on the face, neck, and chest. Merle Bernedoodle One of the rarest, but most beautiful Bernedoodle colors is the merle pattern. Merle Bernedoodles have a solid base color with speckled patches of diluted colors throughout the coat. The merle coat gene is not as common in either Poodles or Bernese Mountain Dogs, but it can be passed onto the Bernedoodles when one of the parents is carrying the merle gene. A higher chance of achieving a merle Bernedoodle pup is by crossing a Poodle with a merle Bernedoodle. However, ethical breeders will never cross two merle Bernedoodles, as this increases the risk of serious health issues like blindness and deafness. Red and White Bernedoodle Red and white Bernedoodle is another rare color combination that features a mixture of reds and whites. The more traditional red and white Bernedoodle color has a solid red base on most of the body, while the chest, face, paws, and legs have white hair. Additionally, there are parti red and white Bernedoodles, where the base color is white throughout the body. In contrast, the red markings are found on the face, ears, and sometimes on the back as well. Black Bernedoodle A solid black Bernedoodle is more of a rare find compared to the black and white Bernedoodle and tri-color Bernedoodles. If the goal is to achieve a black Bernedoodle, both parent pups should carry the same recessive gene. The Bernedoodle tri-color pattern features three different colors on the coat. There can be various tri-color patterns with colors like black, brown, tan, rust, apricot, red, white, and cream. The dominant base color is usually darker and white markings are found on the face, chest, feet, and paws. Sable Bernedoodle Another popular choice is the sable Bernedoodle color. Sable Bernedoodles have a solid base color, but the hairs have black tips. Of course, the overall look depends on how much of the hair lengths are colored black from the ends. Phantom Bernedoodle Phantom Bernedoodles are somewhat similar to tri-colored Bernedoodles, but they have less white markings and more brown hues in their coats. The most common phantom combination is black and tan. These pups usually have dominant black color all across the body with tan markings on the face, chest, legs, and paws. This is again a more rare Bernedoodle color out there, but it sure does look beautiful! Chocolate Bernedoodle Chocolate Bernedoodles can come in a variety of patterns. Rare Bernedoodle Colors Of course, in addition to all of the Bernedoodle colors and color combinations we listed above, there are countless other colors and patterns that the puppies can come in. Many of them surprising even the breeders. It all comes down to their genetics and which dominant and recessive genes are present. Additionally, keep in mind that not all puppies in the same litter inherit the same coat colors. As with any Doodle, combining two different breeds gives us endless possibilities. Like many other Doodles, Bernedoodles often carry the fading gene , which is usually inherited from the Poodle side of their lineage. This typically occurs anywhere from 6 to 10 months of age. The fading, also called clearing, is most noticeable in darker colored Bernedoodles who have blacks and browns in their coat. Black Bernedoodles with the fading gene often change into silver, gray, or bluish tones. Chocolate or brown Bernedoodles can turn silver, cream, or silver beige over time. However, merle Bernedoodles might be at a slightly higher risk of certain health problems, such as deafness or blindness. To be fair, it all comes down to your preferences and which colors you like. However, we do recommend you choose your new family member based on their health and temperament, not for their looks only. Black Bernedoodles can fade into gray or silver tones, and chocolate Bernedoodles might fade into silver, silver beige, and beige tones. The only way to accurately predict the color of your puppy is by DNA testing, which you can arrange at an additional cost with your breeder. The rarest variations are bi-color black and white Bernedoodle, sable, phantom, and merle patterns, solid black, and solid white. In conclusion, choosing the color of your Bernedoodle puppy is one of the more difficult decisions that you face. They all look beautiful in their own way, but one thing is for sure — all Bernedoodles have amazing personalities, regardless of their coat color.
