When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. She licks the puppies bottoms to stimulate a bowel or bladder movement and eats the result. There is no cleaning up for the breeder to do yet. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. He is a proper little dog. Rolling around with his brothers and sisters and playing with toys. Teething toys, puppy Kongs, balls and rope toys are big favorites with puppies. He can bark too and some puppies can be quite noisy at this age! He chases after his mother whenever she appears and suckles hungrily, but she is starting to get fed up with it, and may be reluctant to feed her brood for very long. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. If the weather is warm you can get your puppy swimming now. He should be able to come when he is called, in and around your home, provided there are not too many distractions. It all depends on what you have taught him. He may still be chewing a lot and biting too. Use frozen Kongs to help him and give your furniture and fingers a break. Puppies can go for short walks now. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. We hope you enjoyed them and found the information interesting. When it comes to training, you get out what you put in. Your progress depends as much if not more on you rather than your puppy. And have fun! The first vaccination for your Golden takes place between 6 to 8 weeks. Since everything is new to your pup, he might be timid and get easily scared. Golden puppies just left their source of security and are away from their littermates and mother for the first time. Bring your pup out to relieve him after every meal. Divide it into four small meals throughout the day. This is also the recommended age to start training. Housebreaking is especially important to avoid bad habits from developing. If you want him to be friendly to all, socialization at this age is also essential. This will help him grow familiar with strange sights, smells, and sounds. For the diet, stick to feeding him four small meals a day with the same amount mentioned for 7-week Goldens. After the vaccines, keep your Golden pup away from other pets for at least two weeks. Golden Retriever at 3 months This allows them to have full immunity, especially against the fatal parvovirus. They are becoming more curious, and you might have a problem with biting. Get him used to being combed and his paws handled. Introduce him to the blowdryer and praise him when he stays calm. You can start to be more serious about training. Spread 2 cups of kibble over the day, and cut one meal out by the end of the week. He should also be picking up basic commands. If your pup is quick to learn, kick it up a notch by teaching him a few tricks. Golden Retriever at 5 months Offer some chew toys that you can cool in the fridge to alleviate him discomfort. You may also start exercising him for 20 minutes a day, as this is the stage where he should show excitement for the outdoors. Swimming, fetch, and walking are great to start things off. Some Goldens are potty-trained around the 4-month mark, although accidents might still occur. He will have the body of an adult, but the legs and tail of a puppy. Golden Retriever at 6 months Also, his nose and ears will grow faster, so you end up with a goofy-looking pup. You need to be careful with him for the next six months because this is when they are most vulnerable to developing hip dysplasia. Avoid long walks, going down the stairs, and stopping suddenly while running. The pressure from those activities might cause joints to deform. Your Golden may also start to display signs of sexual maturity in the next few months, if not neutered or spayed. Some of them never grow out of it and will stay young at heart into their old age. To be sure he is free from hip dysplasia, have him checked by the vet when he is two years old. When do Golden Retrievers stop growing? Golden Retrievers grow the fastest between 3 to 6 months of age. Around the six-month mark, their growth starts to taper off. This will prevent him from reaching his full potential. If left untreated, it can cause lasting damage to their bones, muscles, immune system, skin, and digestive system. Being ill for an extended period might also affect his development. Your puppy may be stunted due to malnutrition. Dangers of stunted or accelerated growth Some people prefer bigger Goldens, but some like them small, like Mini Golden Retrievers. This might lead to under or over-feeding, neither of which is ideal. Accelerated growth can cause hip or elbow dysplasia. It can also be responsible for bone disease and arthritis. Stunted Golden puppies, whether by illness or under-feeding, are generally weaker, and make them susceptible to falling sick. What is the best age to spay or neuter your pup? You can spay Golden Retriever puppies as early as 8 weeks old, but any time before they reach sexual maturity is preferred, which is around one year old. This will prevent undesirable behaviors such as marking, territorial behavior, or a fixation with toys. All of which are hard to correct when they manifest. For breeds that are predisposed to hip dysplasia, vets recommend spaying around the 6-month mark. Will neutering or spaying your Golden pup affect his or her growth? Yes, fixing a Golden before they reach sexual maturity generally causes your dog to grow bigger. This is because sex hormones suppress growth hormones. Without growth inhibition, your Golden will continue to grow. Aside from joint problems, there are also a few issues connected to spaying or neutering. They can become more prone to some forms of cancer. Some dogs also experience a change in behavior after the operation. The lack of estrogen can make female dogs more aggressive. Male dogs may also experience an increase in fearfulness. Sexual maturity usually occurs in Golden around 8 to 12 months. This gives you ample time to decide whether to sterilize or not. How heavy is a newborn Golden Retriever puppy? But, puppies as small as 10 oz at birth have been recorded. They usually leave their mom at 10 lbs. Also, bigger litters generally have smaller puppies, but they should all catch up by their 8th week. How to identify an overweight Golden Retriever? Remember, their final size will vary from one another, depending on variation and pedigree. At this stage, nipping bad behaviors in the bud is more important than imprinting positive ones. Instead, just redirect them to positive behavior and reward them accordingly. By this point, your puppy should have already been given their distemper and parvovirus vaccinations. By this point, they should be fully housetrained or close to it. Your dog will be likely to gnaw and bite on anything they can get their chompers on—including you. Stay calm and redirect their attention to appropriate objects like chew toys. Your Golden should be fully accustomed to their new kibble at this point, and you should feed them three to four times per day. A 3-month-old dog should also get a DHHP booster, which protects them from parvo, distemper, parainfluenza, and adenovirus. You can play with your pup as much as you like, but take care not to put too much stress on their joints. Avoid a bunch of running and jumping, especially on hard surfaces. Your dog can transition from four meals per day down to three at this point, but the meals should probably be larger. This can cause digestive issues until your dog gets accustomed to it, so be prepared to clean up a few messes. Training should continue, although your primary focus will likely be convincing your pup to chew on something besides your shoes. Your dog will need another DHPP booster at this point, as well as a rabies vaccination. Other optional vaccines include Bordetella, Lyme disease, coronavirus, and leptospirosis. This could cause a brief burst of intense biting and chewing, so power through it. Make sure your pup has plenty of chew toys available to them. Stairs in particular should be avoided. Your pup is likely to start asserting itself at this stage and may start to mature sexually if not spayed or neutered. There are no vaccinations required at this point. Everyone knows how much fun it is to raise teenagers, right? This can lead to undesirable behaviors like aggressiveness, increased tendency to roam, and destructiveness. As a result, you may think that your dog is too skinny, but resist the urge to increase their rations. While most breeds have a puppy coat that they eventually grow out of, Goldens do not. Instead, their puppy coat becomes their undercoat, so you may notice your dog becoming increasingly fuzzy. The teenage rebelliousness should be wearing off by this point, and your dog is ready to begin training in earnest. You should still be feeding them twice daily, and they should stay on puppy kibble for at least another 6 months. Goldens reach their full height between 9 and 12 months old. Females tend to get there faster, but males will be taller in the end. You may also need to cut back on the amount that you feed them. It depends on the individual dog, but females generally reach maturity first. Spaying or neutering your dog has its pros and cons. The pros are fairly obvious: less marking, reduced misbehavior, and zero chance of getting an unexpected litter of puppies. Spaying and neutering can also protect against certain cancers. You may want to wait until your dog is at least 12 months old before getting them fixed. This also leaves the window open longer in which they can suffer skeletal damage, though, so be careful about how active you allow them to be. However, stunted growth and growing too quickly can cause serious health problems, so you should check with your vet to make sure your dog is growing on schedule. Stunted growth is usually caused by malnourishment or a medical problem. You should have your pup tested for parasites like hookworm or ringworm, and consider switching them to a higher-quality, calorie-dense food. If left untreated, malnourishment can lead to weak bones, muscles, and immune system. As you might expect, growing too quickly is often caused by feeding your dog too much. American and British Goldens are similar. However, American Goldens tend to be less stocky and muscular, instead having a leaner appearance. They may weigh a bit less as well. They tend to be taller as well, often standing an inch or two higher than their counterparts. Conclusion Golden Retrievers make excellent pets, and we understand how hard it is to resist the temptation to bring a puppy home. If you do, though, you should understand what to expect from your new dog. Steady growth is what you want to see, without too many peaks or valleys. This sets your dog up for a long, healthy lifespan. Every dog develops at their own pace, so as long as you feed your pup an appropriate amount of high-quality puppy kibble and get them vaccinated regularly, you should be fine. See also:. Types of Golden Retrievers There are mainly three subtypes of golden retrievers; American goldens, Canadian goldens, and British or English goldens. Although some argue there are more types, i. In fact, they are really one breed - the golden retriever. I mention it here because the weight of your golden retriever may vary based on which subtype they are. They typically weigh between 55 to 75 pounds and have a more athletic build. These dogs have longer legs and narrower heads with straighter muzzles than other golden retrievers. They also tend to have darker coats that range from golden to red or rust. Canadian Golden Retriever The Canadian golden retriever is similar in size to the American type but has a thicker coat due to its adaptation to cold weather conditions in Canada. These dogs can weigh between pounds, with males being larger than females on average. British Golden Retriever British golden retrievers tend to be slightly smaller in height and weight than their American or Canadian counterparts. You can usually recognize the British golden retrievers as their coat colors are typically much lighter than American or Canadian goldens, with the most common color being pale cream. However, they come in shades of gold: from pale cream to dark reddish-gold. When consulting our growth chart, expect to find the American and Canadian golden retrievers on the scale's upper end heavier , with the British goldens on the lower side. They should put on 1 - 2 lbs per week in the first two months. Their most significant growth spurt will be between 3 - 5 months, where they will put on 2 - 3 lbs per week. This should slow down by 6 months old, where they'll continue to put on 1 - 1. They may be fully grown at 1 year old but usually will have a slow growth rate of 0 - 1 lbs per week but only some weeks. Your puppy will go through five distinct stages to reach adulthood. To learn more about their behavior and development at each stage, see our page on the complete puppy development process from birth to 18 months. However, there are some alternatives to get a rough idea. While it's impossible to predict the exact size, there are ways to estimate their adult weight based on their parents and litter. The Parents Firstly, take a look at the parents' sizes. Golden retrievers typically weigh pounds for males and pounds for females. If both parents fall within this range, your pup will likely end up in this category. However, if one parent is significantly smaller or larger than the other, then there is a chance that your puppy may not follow the average weight range. Bear in mind male golden retriever puppies tend to take their size from the male parent, whereas female goldens take after their mothers. Littermates Another way to gauge your puppy's potential size is by examining its littermates. A puppy that is the biggest in the litter is much more likely to be a larger than average adult dog. Similarly, the runt of the litter is most likely to stay on the small side. However, it has been known for the runt to become one of the bigger adult dogs once they don't have to compete for food. Impact of Nutrition on Golden Retriever Growth Puppies are irresistible, with cute little faces and playful demeanors, but they require proper nutrition to grow healthy and strong. As a new puppy parent, you may wonder how much food is enough or how often to feed them. The impact of nutrition on puppy growth cannot be overstated, as it affects everything from weight gain and immune system development to bone density and overall health. One of the most critical factors in puppy nutrition is ensuring they receive the right amount of calories for their age, breed, size, and activity level. Overfeeding can lead to excessive weight gain, which strains your pup's joints and increases their risk for obesity-related health problems later in life. On the other hand, underfeeding can result in stunted growth or malnutrition. You can find more information about how to feed your puppy by consulting our puppy feeding guide here. It includes a schedule you can print out and a food calculator to determine how much to provide and how often. If you suspect your puppy is unwell, you must consult your veterinarian. These charts will help you see if your puppy is underweight, but you must also consider any symptoms you notice. Illness and puppy growth are concerns every new dog owner should be aware of. A puppy's immune system is not fully developed, so they are more susceptible to illnesses than adult dogs. This can impact their growth and development, causing long-term health problems if not addressed promptly. One of the most common illnesses in puppies is parvovirus, a highly contagious virus that attacks the gastrointestinal system. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. If left untreated, it can lead to dehydration and even death. Another concern is canine distemper, a virus that affects the respiratory and nervous systems. Symptoms include coughing, fever, seizures, and paralysis. Both illnesses can have lasting effects on a puppy's growth and development. If in doubt, consult your veterinarian immediately. Is My Puppy Too Thin? As a new puppy owner, it's only natural to be concerned about your furry friend's health and well-being. One common worry is whether your puppy is too thin. While every pup is different and body type varies, some general guidelines help you determine if your pet is at a healthy weight. Firstly, take a close look at their overall appearance. You should be able to feel their ribs with ease but not see them protruding from under the skin. Additionally, their waistline should be visible when looking down at them from above. They may carry excess weight if they appear round or bloated instead of having an hourglass shape. Another factor to consider is their energy levels and activity level. If they seem lethargic or struggle during playtime, this could indicate that they are underweight and not getting enough nutrients in their diet. Is My Puppy Too Fat? One of the most common questions that golden retriever owners ask themselves is whether their puppy is too fat. It's well-known that goldens love their food and tend to put on too much weight if not kept in check. It's also difficult to tell with a golden retriever puppy if it's fat or fluff. An excellent tool to tell if your puppy is too fat is to check their body condition score BCS. This scale ranges from , with 5 being ideal. If your puppy scores above a 5, they may carry excess weight. You can also check for physical signs like a lack of visible waist or feeling ribs with difficulty. If you do find that your pup is carrying extra pounds, don't despair! With small lifestyle changes like increasing exercise and adjusting their diet, you can help them lose weight and maintain a healthy BCS. Finally In conclusion, the Golden Retriever puppy weight chart is a great tool to help owners understand their pup's growth and development. It can be a reference point for tracking size, weight, and overall health progress. With the aid of this chart, owners can take proactive steps to ensure that their puppy receives the proper nutrition and care to develop into a healthy and happy adult dog. By Tom Massey Mar 02, Adopting a golden retriever is one of the best decisions you can make. These loving dogs are constantly praised for their gentle and calm, yet playful nature, making them perfect dogs for all walks of life and types of families. So when you do finally bring your Golden Retriever puppy home, you want to do everything you can to give them a long and healthy life for years to come. This is a wide range, so keep in mind that the weight of your Retriever will vary depending on genetic factors and sex. For example, female Golden Retrievers will weigh closer to 55 pounds while Golden Retriever males are heavier and will weigh closer to 75 pounds. Females also typically reach their full size by their first birthday, while males may continue growing through their second year. You can usually tell the size males and females will be based on what their parents look like, which is why Snowy Pines encourages meeting the parents or browsing through their photos and biographies online. Then, calculate 1. What to Expect: This age is crucial for mother-puppy bonding since he will depend on his mother for food, cleaning, and socialization. Image Source Weeks months Golden Retriever Male Weight: Between 8 to 12 weeks, your male puppy will average between 10 to 22 pounds. Golden Retriever Female Weight: Although females will grow to be smaller than males, they are typically around the same weight at this age group. The puppies become very playful, curious, and discover their voices little by little. Introductory training like house training is essential. Socialization is also important, which is why Snowy Pines ensures that all puppies stay with their littermates until adoption. For female puppies, 6 months is a little over the halfway point to their full-size, and males are essentially smaller versions of their adult bodies. Remember, at this age, you can multiply by two to determine their adult weight! What to Expect: Socialization is still crucial at this age, and more intense training can also begin. The puppy should also be kept in happy and safe environments, as any exposure to something fearful at this age may impact him long-term. This is entirely normal: Think of your puppy as a teenager who is going through adolescence and waiting for the rest of his body to catch up. They may get territorial and challenge you and other pets for dominance. Most Golden Retrievers will be fully grown by 24 months old, although this varies. Golden Retriever Female Weight: In most cases, females are finished growing before 16 to 24 months. Whatever their nature is like at the to month mark is likely what it will be throughout their adult life. They are loyal, friendly, and calm, making them the perfect companion for small and large families alike. However, Goldens are susceptible to certain illnesses and diseases that are common in bigger breeds that are typically caused by overfeeding, stunted or accelerated growth, and genetic issues. One of the most common diseases that goldens experience is Osteochondritis dissecans OCD. OCD is a developmental disease that affects large-breed dogs because of the accelerated growth they experience. It is an inflammatory condition that causes abnormal cartilage development on the end of a bone in the joint. This can lead to joint problems like arthritis and hip dysplasia which commonly appears in the elbow, hip, and knee. Image Source The good news is that, although larger breeds like golden retrievers are prone to joint issues like this, you may be able to help prevent it through proper practice. OCD is a specific disease that is more common in dogs that receive too much energy and calcium in their diets. Other common factors are genetics, rapid growth, and hormonal factors. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, and all that extra weight can leave your puppy with skeletal abnormalities that put too much weight on joints. Another way to avoid accidentally stunted or accelerated growth is to ensure your golden retriever puppy is getting fed appropriately and receiving the right amount of calories. Image Source Months Between 2 and 4 months old, your puppy should eat 4 times per day with 2 ounces per meal. This will add up to 7 to 9 ounces per day, depending on how much he willingly eats. Keep him on puppy food through his first year before switching to young adult food. They must receive regular exercise every day. However, this depends on their age. As previously covered, the more your puppy grows, the more susceptible to common diseases like joint problems. Breeders with years of experience, like the team at Snowy Pines, work hard to keep pure bloodlines so that all of the parents and their litters are as healthy as they can be, which helps guarantee a lifetime full of happiness without any issue. However, if your puppy has a very low weight, you will know that you should check with your veterinarian. As a new owner of Golden Retriever Puppy, you will be surprised to know that handling of puppies can boost their growth. Not only does it promote proper weight gain, but it can also affect development in other areas. Introduction In Comparing the puppies who were handled with those who did not show that the puppies that were being held opened their eyes and ears and had their hair grow faster and they even had better motor development. You may want to know how your puppy compares to another Golden Retriever. Or are you worried that your dog growth is not on the right path? In studying Golden Retriever growth charts, it is clear that most pups gain weight between 5 and 10 percent per week. Keep in mind that a lot of factors can affect the growth rate of a puppy. One size doesn't fit all Not all puppies will follow the growth chart at an exact speed. There can be a lot of diverse reasons for this. The growth chart can alert you should there be significant differences. However, even good owners can have skinny dogs. The Golden Retriever growth charts can alert you to the common causes of slow growth. Occasionally it comes down to a change in the dog diet. Ensure your dog likes his food and that he eats frequently. Request your veterinarian to rule out worms or any other condition. In the meantime, rest assured knowing that most puppies do well when they are raised by a loving and caring owner who has a good relationship with a trusted veterinarian and spends a lot of pleasant time with the puppy. To ascertain if your puppy is large, small, or average-sized for his or her age, you will first find the correct chart based on the sex of your puppy. Scroll down until you locate your puppy's age on the left side of the table. Then compare your dog weight with each column subsequently to that age. To predict the future heights and weights of your dog growth for a period of time. If your dog weight is always in the average range, you can scroll down the average column to estimate how large your puppies maybe as an adult. The same applies to other columns too. Remember, this is just an estimate. Not all goldens will grow to the same size and at the same rate. The size of the parents is always a good indicator of whether your dog will be above or below average in size. However, while natural variation is nothing to worry about, stunted growth or accelerated growth is. If a golden retriever puppy is malnourished or suffering from an unidentified medical condition usually hookworm or ringworm , their natural growth can be compromised. This can lead to serious medical issues in later life, as it can leave them with weak bones, weak muscles, and a weak immune system, as well as a tendency to develop both skin and digestive issues. Growing too quickly, largely as a result of overfeeding, can also pose a major health risk. As well as leading to obesity, carrying too much weight at the development stage can leave your golden retriever with skeletal abnormalities, hip dysplasia, and osteochondrosis , a condition that affects the joints. With these tips, you will help fight off those genetic health disorders as well. Appropriate Diet Start off by speaking to your vet for guidance on foods to use for the different life stages. At the very least, you will need a nutritionally complete and balanced diet made for large breeds. Good food will help your pup gain the right amount of weight, look healthy, and have enough energy. Proper exercise will build their muscle and bone strength, prevent obesity, increase their agility, stop destructive behavior, and help them release pent-up energy. Vaccines will help to prevent infectious diseases such as hepatitis, parvovirus, rabies, and distemper, all of which could affect the growth and overall health of your puppy. This will be a plus for her overall health. It would also be great to have your vet do routine health checks on your puppy. This way, no issue will go unnoticed, and treatment can be administered early for better outcomes. A shiny coat and bright eyes are a plus. Alternatively, if you notice rapid weight gain or loss, unusual bumps and lumps on their skin, digestive issues, changes in behavior, and visual or hearing complications, take your dog to the vet right away. Compared to other breeds, Golden Retrievers, especially females, grow pretty quickly. Males could take up to 18 months to achieve the same milestone. However, both will still need an additional year to fill out the chest fully. Adult height, on the other hand, will be reached between 9 and 12 months. As always, females will get there a bit faster than males. You can get a rough idea of how big your golden retriever will grow by first studying the parents. Take note of the size that both of the parents and previous litters have had. Rarely will a puppy grow larger than its parents, so the measurements you gather will give you a better idea of how tall and heavy your golden retriever will get. Full-grown, healthy, male golden retrievers have a height of between 22 and 24 inches while the females are 20 to 22 inches tall. In terms of height and body structure, the Canadian golden retriever has no rival. Spaying and neutering specifically affect the development of bones and also ligament and tendon strength. In fact, some studies report higher incidences of cranial cruciate ligament tears and hip dysplasia among golden retrievers that went through this procedure. Therefore, consult your vet when deciding if and when to spay or neuter your dog. The weight of your golden retriever is a good indication of their healthy development. While male and female Goldens will have different weights and show goldens tend to be heavier than working goldens, overall, they should be hitting the weights listed in the growth and weight chart above. If your dog is not hitting these milestones, consult your vet about malnutrition, possibly caused by worms, and excessive golden retriever growth, which is often the result of overfeeding. If you feel like your pooch is missing any of them, again, it is time to consult your vet. In general, good nutrition and a loving home is a recipe for a happy and healthy golden retriever. If you want to know more about your golden retriever, you can do a DNA test, too. You can choose one of the tests below:.

However, pet stores will often sell lower-quality puppies for less than this. It would be wise to go with a breeder if you want to get the best possible dog because the parents will have the highest standards of temperament and health. You can expect that boxer breeders in Indiana are more professional because they know that they need to keep their customers happy so that they can come back for future litters. The more expensive the dog generally means that there is a better history of health and temperament in both parents. They will also have more qualifications for being accepted into the American Boxer Club. There are many advantages of going with a breeder when it comes to owning a boxer puppy. If you buy one directly from a pet store then you may end up getting an older dog that somebody did not want any longer or possibly one that has been poorly bred by accident. If you go with a boxer breeder in Indiana then you will be able to get the best possible puppy for your family. They can help you find one that is just right for your home and lifestyle. You will also know exactly what conditions they were kept in when it comes to health and nutrition, which makes the chances of them being healthy even better. How to Find A Responsible Boxer Breeder in Indiana There are some red flags that you should watch out for when it comes to locating a boxer breeder. It may be tempting to buy from someone who is selling puppies for less than market value but this could end up being a bad idea. You need to understand what kind of conditions they were kept in because you do not want your puppy coming into the home with health problems right away. Asking friends and family or taking to social media can be a good place to start when looking for a boxer breeder in Indiana. It is more likely that they can get a referral from somebody who has used their services before compared to just randomly calling or emailing them. You should be able to do all of this online if you want to save time and feel safer about it. It is also highly recommended that you go with what the American Kennel Club suggests when selecting any dog breeder. They have certain standards that need to be met before they are approved so take advantage of this. Visit Your Indiana Boxer Breeder in Person When you are ready to visit your boxer breeder, be prepared to see how they do business. They should let you into the house or facility right away if it is clean and there should not be any loud barking or dogs in cages. You will most likely meet the parents of the litter as well as any other adult boxers that they have on-site at the moment. If everything goes well during your meeting with them then you can expect to get a healthy puppy from them after completing all of the payment and paperwork details. Visiting the breeder in person will also give you a better idea of what kind of animal they have kept in their house. There should not be any nasty odors or signs of neglect so keep this in mind when thinking about them as a business. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in Indiana Always make sure that you ask for references or referrals when visiting your breeder since this is an important part of their job. You may even be able to go with somebody who has already gotten one of their puppies in the past so you can see if they are happy with how he turned out. References will also give you an idea of what kind of pets that they have raised in their house. You should not visit with somebody who has nothing but terrible things to say about them or if they do not feel comfortable giving out references at all. If your breeder will not provide you with references then you should be even more cautious about their practices and think twice before sending them any money. Ask Your Indiana Boxer Breeder if You Can Meet Past Customers Your Indiana Boxer breeder should be more than happy to help you find one, or a few happy customers, as most good quality reputable breeders love talking about their dogs. Meeting past customers will also give you a chance to ask questions about temperament, or any problems they may have had. I personally like meeting past customers the best when looking for puppies because it gives me an idea of what my new puppy might be like when she is at that age. Your breeder should have a vet they regularly use for all of their dogs and puppies. Your breeder will also be able to give you the contact information or provide it to you beforehand so that you can make an appointment and get your little one checked out as soon as possible. These shots can be given as early as 8 to 10 weeks old; all depending on your breeder, where they are located, and what is standard in the area. Remember, good quality Indiana puppy breeders should want you to have a happy healthy Boxer for many years. They should want to know that you are using a veterinarian that they approve of, because since this person has already opened up their home and hearts while raising this pup; they want to make sure that when your puppy comes home with you, he or she will receive the best possible care. Asking if you have other pets can also be seen as an ethical sign because it shows that the breeder wants to make sure the environment in which everyone is living is safe and beneficial for all involved. This Indiana breeder may even ask what kind of food or treats you plan on giving your pup so that they can share information about how these items were developed. If so, how are they being treated? They should have full medical histories on both mom and dad including what vaccines were given, if there were any incidences of disease or illness during pregnancy, where the litter was born, their weights at birth, etc. You might even ask if the parents are still available for stud services or babysitting because this shows that you care about more than just money. A good breeder will know what type of food is best for a Boxer Puppy and they may even suggest a specific brand. Ask if you can buy any of their current food because this is an easy way to save money, plus most reputable breeders have been feeding the same food for years so they know it works well with their pups. A simple way some people have been successful in training their Boxer Puppy is by taking them outside every 2 hours and giving them a chance to go potty on a patch of grass. Make sure you provide lots of praise when they do go. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. However, you only need to stimulate the puppy if it is eating and not with the mother. Keep the puppy warm and continue rubbing it to help it breathe and move. This should be continued until the puppy is under veterinary supervision. For a puppy with anasarca to have a chance of survival, it needs to be treated by a veterinarian. If your dog gave birth at home, then you need to take the puppy to a veterinary office right away. If your normal veterinary office is closed when the mother dog gives birth, then you should take the affected puppy to the closest 24 veterinary emergency clinic. As soon as a puppy is born with anasarca it should begin treatment to stand any chance of survival. Treatment usually includes giving the puppy a diuretic to reduce the amount of fluid the puppy is retaining. If the condition is mild, the puppies can go on to live normal lives. Even with prompt treatment, however, a puppy with a severe case of anasarca has a very slim chance of survival. If the puppy has a severe case of anasarca, it has a very low chance of survive. If this is the case with your puppy, then you should focus on making sure it is comfortable and pain free instead of focusing on recovery. If it doesn't, then your veterinarian will have some suggestions about how to stop the puppies' suffering. This could include keeping it warm and giving it medication to alleviate any pain. In some cases, this could mean compassionate euthanasia. Prepare yourself that the outcome may be death. In many cases of anasarca, the puppy is still born or dies quickly after birth. Pregnant dams need lots of water, as the amniotic fluid is constantly changing. Water babies are like babies that become anemic low blood in utero. They get severely edematous. This is usually due to parvovirus or an immune response blood group incompatibility. Image of a newborn water puppy— MistyTrails plays "midwoof" to many local breeders. Water Puppy Syndrome Edema:an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in various organs, cavities, or tissues of the body. We can learn a bit from "people" medicine—water babies hydrops usually occurs from lack of red blood cells in the baby as a result of an infection or immune reaction. It can affect only one pup in a litter or the entire litter. Water puppies are impossible to deliver naturally, as they are huge, swollen, waterlogged puppies. A C-section is a must, as these puppies are generally two to four times the size of their littermates. These pups range from mild, medium to severely affected. If your dam is pushing on a single puppy, has contractions for two hours without puppy presentation into the birth canal, especially after delivering one or two normal pups, you should seek veterinary assistance, as the remaining pups can die along with the dam. This is a Medical Emergency! There are many opinions on why these water pups develop; some say it is congenital or environmental, some say diet, trauma to the dam, or even a virus. The condition is also occasionally seen in other dog breeds. An x-ray does not always show the larger size of these puppies, as the weight is mostly fluid. An ultrasound is thought to detect these puppies. Water pups are usually born alive, limp and weak, and they look like someone blew them up like a balloon. The dam was supplying the needed oxygen and nutrition through the placenta and cord, but soon after birth the medium to severely affected pup will suffocate by the pressure of the fluid. Some people report the mildly affected pups that survive the first two to three days turned out to be normal pups. Others say there were other underlying problems and their water pups died within the first week. The choice to try and save or to let the pup go without suffering will be between you and your vet, how much experience you have behind you, and if you are willing to put in the time PLUS be prepared for heartache. Trying to save these pups at this time is considered experimental. The cause and treatment of this condition are unknown at this time. Treatment: Treatment needs to be given right away for a mildly affected pup. Elevate the head and extend the neck for a more clear airway. To encourage urination, run one or two fingers over the genitalia. Some veterinarians have recently had great success using Lasix in saving water puppies. Lasix is the brand name of the chemical furosemide. Furosemide is a diuretic-saluretic, which inhibits the re-absorption of sodium salt. The drug is administered intravenously immediately after birth of the water puppy. Administer furosemide Lasix. Caution: more than three could cause dehydration. Keep the pups warm and stimulate urination as described above every —two to three minutes. Elastic bandages have also been used to push out fluid not too tight. Mildly affected pups can take one to two hours to breathe normally. Moderately affected pups take 90 minutes to four hours to breathe normally. Medium to severely affected pups are difficult to save; they usually drown within 30 minutes. Severely bloated pups have been known to split open at the abdomen just from handling. Autopsies have shown that the organs are saturated in fluid and the life sustaining organs cannot function, causing the pups to drown. Theories: An inuterine reaction to sodium, or an inability to process proteins. Hypothyrodism, as well as an inability of the lymphmatic system to drain effectively due to the anatomy. None of these ideas have ever been proven. Water puppies are often seen associated with a combination of vertebral column defects and often have further abnormalities, particularly cleft palates. Some Findings on Causes still not proven Congenital anasarca congenital generalized subcutaneous edema. The etiology of congenital anasarca is not well defined prenatal cardiovascular anomaly A traumatic origin with disruption of the placenta as a fetus suffering from anasarca is usually the sole occupant of a uterine horn filled with a large amount of hemorrhagic fluid. Could be caused by a virus, it has been attributed to the after-effects of the mother's oronasal infection with the minute virus during the last trimester of pregnancy associated with myocarditis. In the latter case, elasticity of the fetus' skin allows extravasation of transudate that is compensated for by the immediate supply of fluid via the umbilical cord. These puppies usually die within less than 36 hours. Prevention Low-salt diet. Reduce potential trauma isolate pregnant dams Autogenous minute virus vaccine in the case of suspicion of minute virus anarsarca en-zootic within the same breeding facility According to doctors, human babies can be born with this too. Human version: Fetal hydrops the cause is not yet known, but there are many theories In humans, edema is considered a congenital syndrome that happens in utero, and doctors figure it is most often caused by a virus slap cheek virus, and a human parvo-type virus B or it can be caused by a liver malfunction. In the U. Figures from Thailand suggest an estimated incidence of one case per , pregnancies. It is not a labor-induced issue, it happens prenatally for unknown reasons. There are photos of dwarf looking puppies that may fall into this category. If you suspect your dam may deliver water puppies consult your vet. Courtesy of MistyTrails Havanese. Water Walrus Puppies Anasarca puppies Page 3 "My pup was a singleton , born to my girl who had had a litter the previous year, a litter of 6 normal healthy English Cocker Spaniel pups. This time we used the son of the boy we used last year. This was only his second litter too. His first a healthy litter of 8 pups. Sadly the pup was severely affected, as the pictures show. First and foremost, I would like to thank you for all of the valuable information I found on your website. While re-reading your posted information I came across the section on Water Puppies, and after being told that an x-ray showed that my female was carrying one puppy that appeared to be twice as large as the others, and what I thought to be a strange shiny look to her breast and nipple area, I began to worry. I contacted my daughter who will be a Dr. She explained that the occurrence of "Water Puppies" is rare and that I need not worry as pups of the same litter are often many different sizes. Maybe it was a coincidence that I came upon your site and all of the information you provided on "what to do when things go wrong".In June my female Labrador delivered three healthy pups followed by a "Water Puppy" which was very large and she was having great difficulty pushing her out. I followed the advice and " feathered " her cervix to see if it would help her labor progress, and it was almost instantly helpful. The fourth puppy water puppy was born dead, her skin was so swollen that it was split about her belly and across her face, it also appeared that she may have also had a clef palate. The fifth pup was born healthy with no complications. My own veterinarian had never heard of this before, and neither had my brother-in-law who is also a vet. I have included a picture that I took of the "Water Puppy" four hours after birth so you may share it with your readers. The swelling had decreased considerably and absorbed into the white towel that I had wrapped her in. This is a French Bulldog male puppy. He was delivered via c-section and lived about 30 minutes. I believe, according to the Dr. Never in my long-time practice have I seen anything like this. The mother dog did not have any unusual signs of any kind during pregnancy. Male French Bulldog water puppy that lived about 30 minutes after delivery Male French Bulldog water puppy that lived about 30 minutes after delivery I bred my French Bulldog two years ago and she too had a water pup. She only had two puppies, one was perfectly fine and the other was a water puppy. Since we were already planning a C-section birth, we already knew there was a water puppy. The vet and his staff worked feverishly to revive this pup. Miraculously, the puppy made it and actually started to nurse. However, we noticed right away he could not keep the milk down. Every time it nursed, milk would come back up out of his nose and mouth. The vet took an X-ray and unfortunately found a really terrible birth defect; the esophagus was not connected to the stomach so the milk had nowhere to go but back out. My heart just sank knowing what a fighter this puppy was to be able to come out of that first ordeal of being a water puppy and now we had to put him down humanely so he would not starve to death. I too was put off from breeding after this as I got so attached to this puppy in such a short amount of time. Thank you again to everyone who shared their stories as I am still so sad from that event but know I'm certainly not alone. However, take heart, the other puppy is doing so well that he's even being shown and has won some ribbons to date! Medical articles It may sound like an animated character straight out of a Disney movie, but anasarca is, sadly, a life-threatening condition common in Bulldogs , but recognized in other breeds as well. It can theoretically affect any breed of dog, although it is most common in brachycephalic breeds, such as English and French Bulldogs , Bullmastiffs , Pugs , and Boston Terriers. Anasarca puppies, also referred to as walrus puppies, or occasionally water puppies, rubber puppies, or swimmer puppies, are born with an abnormal and lethal amount of fluid under their skin. Anasarca has been recognized for many years, yet as with many canine neonatal illnesses, there is a discouraging lack of knowledge of the true causes of anasarca, and much of what experts believe about it is speculative. When and Why It Occurs The condition appears to develop in the later part of gestation; puppies can be born up to four or five times their normal weight, as a result of the excess fluid. One or all of the puppies may be affected. Survival rates are low, and because of the abnormally large size of the puppies, a cesarean delivery is necessary. Experts consider anasarca to be a congenital problem—meaning it exists at or before birth—but it is unclear whether or not it is always inherited. Bulldogs and French Bulldogs are the only two breeds where anasarca is known to be a hereditary condition, although the mode of inheritance is unknown. In some breeds where the condition is rare, it is thought to be less likely to be inherited. The assumption is that if the genetic potential were there, breeders would be seeing a lot more of it. Environmental factors influencing the condition have been discussed and debated on the internet, but again this is speculative. For example, some breeders, whose dogs have produced anasarca puppies, suggest the culprit may be a high sodium diet, which they believe causes the female to retain water. Experts caution that there is no scientific data to substantiate environmental claims, including those of a high-sodium diet. A Lack of Symptoms To further complicate the matter, symptoms are limited or seemingly non-existent in most cases. This, understandably, catches many breeders and veterinarians off guard. Some experts say that one indicator may be additional weight gain by the female, as a result of the extra fluid. Others observe a listing or shifting of the puppies from one side to the other. Again, experts caution against reading too much into these observations, as there is no viable scientific data to substantiate these symptoms. Although survival rates are low, some water puppies do survive provided they receive immediate veterinary treatment. That's why it's a good idea to get pet insurance that covers hereditary conditions if you end up with a water puppy. Theoretically, surviving puppies should live an otherwise healthy, normal life. The problem is that many puppies do not survive, with many being euthanized shortly after birth. Therefore, as with most everything pertaining to neonatal illnesses, little or no scientific documentation exists regarding the long-term effects of congenital edema in puppies. Donate to Support this Research Program Area Abstract Dystocia is one of the most significant reproductive health concerns for dog owners and breeders. While there can be many causes of dystocia, the occurrence of so-called "water" or "walrus" puppies is one of the more common reasons within particular breeds. Water puppies suffer from the abnormal accumulation of body fluids, called anasarca, resulting in a generalized swelling of the body. Normal delivery through the birth canal then becomes difficult or even impossible, oftentimes requiring intervention by caesarean section. Water puppies are generally stillborn or die shortly after birth. While anasarca affects many dog breeds, it appears to be more frequent in the brachycephalic breeds including the Bulldog, French bulldog, Pug, Boston terrier and others. Due to the known genetic relationship between these breeds and the recurrence of anasarca puppies in specific matings, it is strongly believed that there is a significant genetic risk factor associated with this problem. Modern genetic tools and techniques have greatly improved the ability to identify specific variations in DNA which may be responsible for such traits. Thus, in an effort initiated by the Bulldog Club of America and Bulldog Club of America Charitable Health Fund, samples from newborn puppies with anasarca, their parents, and non-affected puppies have been collected, and will be utilized to analyze for a genetic basis of anasarca in an effort to develop a DNA-based test that can be used to screen for and reduce the incidence of this devastating disease. Publication s Hekman, J. S Research. Have you ever heard of Bulldog Water Puppies? Dog lovers rarely talk about water puppies despite being common. This is a potentially fatal condition that is commonly found in short-nosed dog breeds such as Bulldogs , French Bulldogs , Boston Terrier , Pugs , and more but it has also been seen in other dog breeds such a Labrador Retrievers and Yorkshire Terriers. Water Puppy Syndrome can affect only one or two puppies, or even the entire litter. These puppies are born suffering from Edema —an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in different organs, cavities or body tissues. Water puppies can be 2 to 4 times larger than normal pups in the litter. Sadly, most of them immediately pass away or are stillborn. Water Puppies who are born alive may be categorized as mild, medium or severely affected. Puppies born with Water Puppy Syndrome are also found to be suffering from a combination of vertebral column defects and other abnormalities like cleft palates. What causes Bulldog Water Puppies? In fact, pregnant dogs need plenty of water because the amniotic fluid changes constantly. Signs your Bulldog is going to have Water Puppies There is no surefire way to tell if your Bulldog is going to have water puppies. But here are some signs to watch out for: Drinking unusually larger amounts of water, Shiny-looking something like onion-skin teats and surrounding tissue, Nipple-discharge early in pregnancy. An ultrasound is thought to be a better tool to detect these Water Puppies. Do Bulldog Water Puppies live long? Survival rates in Bulldog Water Puppies are very low. Sometimes, veterinarians recommend putting the puppy down. But some Bulldog breeders report that mild to medium Bulldog Water Puppies who survived the first two to three days grew up to be normal puppies. However, most of these survivors have underlying health problems like cleft palates. A Bulldog breeder also told Bulldog Guide that a couple of Bulldog Water Puppies he took care of had one odd thing in common. One of the surviving Anasarca puppies Toto took care of. He is now 3 years old. The report written by Dr. Constanza Bini et al. But after performing a C-section on the 55th day of pregnancy, they found out that two of the Bulldog puppies have different degrees of subcutaneous edema. Unfortunately, the first and biggest puppy they took out was dead. The second puppy, a male Bulldog, was suffering from mild Anasarca and fortunately survived after performing a series of treatments. The third Bulldog was a normal and healthy pup. Despite managing to live, Bulldog Water Puppy survivors are recommended to be neutered or spayed and spared from breeding. How to help Bulldog Water Puppies? There is no sure way to treat and save an Anasarca from death. But veterinarians have been performing a series of procedures to help Anasarca or Water puppies. Water Puppies must be given treatment as soon as possible. Then, stimulate his genitalia to encourage him to urinate. Bini have been using Lasix, a brand name of the chemical furosemide. This chemical is a diuretic-saluretic, which slows down the re-absorption of sodium. Furosemide must be given immediately intravenously or intramuscularly to the puppy after birth. The administration of Furosemide can be done again every 30 to 45 minutes. But never do this more than three times as it can cause dehydration. Stimulating the pups to pee is also important and must be done every two to three minutes. The vet can also use elastic bandages gently wrapped around the pups to help push out fluid. Mildly-affected Water Puppies can take 1 to 2 hours to breathe normally while moderately-affected water pups take longer — about one and a half hours to four hours — to breathe normally. Severely affected water puppies are very difficult to save and they drown from the fluids and die just within 30 minutes after birth. Severely-affected Water Puppies are known to split in half the abdomen just from handling. How to prevent your Bulldog from having water babies Since the real cause of this condition is still not known, there is no surefire way to prevent it. However, veterinarians and experts recommend the following: Feed a pregnant Bulldog low-salt diet, Reduce — if not remove — anything that can cause potential trauma, Administer autogenous minute virus vaccine if minute virus is suspected. How to Participate in Anasarca Research Bulldog owners and breeders are encouraged to participate in genetic research to identify and determine a marker for Anasarca. The researchers of the study are requesting DNA samples from affected puppies and parents who produced Anasarca or Water Puppies. This research is being conducted at the University of Illinois. If you wish to be involved with the study, you may contact Dr. Michael at mwhughes usc. Leave a Reply: Leave a comment below and share your thoughts.

Andy's foster - to - adopt success story written by his forever family: "Early in , we started the process to find our Golden Retriever girl a companion and adopt a rescue dog in need of a good home. We submitted an application to FRR and subsequently had a virtual home visit. We were impressed by the thoroughness of both, as it gave us confidence that FFR clearly had the best interest of their animals in mind. While the timing was less than ideal due to some upcoming summer plans, we agreed to foster one of the pups for as long as three weeks. Two days later, a tiny black male pup with a spotted white chest was delivered to our home. He looked like he is wearing a tuxedo. He came with the name, Andy. He was a world-class cuddler who immediately began to work his way into our hearts. Our golden retriever soon welcomed him into our home as well. Within a couple of weeks, it became apparent that this foster puppy was going to be adopted as a member of our family. It also became apparent that Andy was the perfect name for him. It just fit, not only in his cute appearance but also in his behavior and antics. Andy was one of a number of puppies that we have brought into our home over the years, and we have always been sticklers about health, wellness and neutering. So, it was great to see that FFR also insisted on this same level of care and attention. Andy is now 6 months old. He has adapted well to our home and lifestyle. He has even traveled with us to our Idaho home for three months. He is still all puppy: filled with the energy, entertaining antics, and occasional mischief that make puppies fun. He and our golden retriever are now fast friends, so our efforts to find her a companion have been richly rewarded. He has a desire to please, and he has learned basic commands and to walk well on leash and to heel faster than any dog we have had. Foster-to-adopt worked really well for our family. Thanks to FFR and all their dedicated staff for helping us bring Andy into our home. Click here for more information. Walk for the Dogs with ResQWalk! I would really like one or more doggie siblings to be my best friend s. But hey, I like humans a lot too since they give me lots of pets, tell me how handsome I am, and most important, throw the BLUE Chuck-it ball for me if you do not know, the blue ones have squeakers! I am a 3 year old Golden Mix with a great personality, hoping that my next home is one where I can unpack and stay forever. I have had two homes before that did not work out, but I think we are on to something new with my current foster home. I have never had a dog sibling before, but I feel SO much better when my doggie foster brothers are around! My foster mom took me to see the veterinary behaviorist at the SF SPCA, and the vet agrees that these guys are helping me feel like it is ok when mom leaves us for a bit to go in the store or take a short walk in the neighborhood. I can stay in the car for a while with my brothers since the temperature is cool right now and not worry too much. I can also stay in the house with them, and while I am a little vocal, I do not destroy anything. I have so much potential and am hoping the meds I am taking doggie Prozac will continue to help me be calm when I am stressed. I might be on those forever, but they are not too expensive. They tell me I am pretty smart did I mention good-looking? For now, if I cannot go with you when you leave the house, I would like to be with another human in some setting maybe a neighbor, Doggie Daycare, or with a dog walker. Ok, enough reading, talk it over with your pup s , and come meet me already, I am waiting!
A close up face image of Labradoodle puppy Max The price depends on many factors and can vary from breeder to breeder. While this might seem like a hefty price to pay for a puppy, the low prices that you find on social media or other ads are usually from puppy mills that try to over-breed these beloved animals in inappropriate and unethical ways. Low-quality living conditions notwithstanding, puppies from such places have a high probability of suffering from ailments and issues caused by genetic mutations occurring from rapid breeding. Labradoodle costs around the world In Australia the average prices for non-shedding Labradoodles ranged from AUD. There were some niche breeders that charged much more. Depending on how unique the coat color is, the price will vary. Parti-colored Labradoodles like Tuxedo Labradoodle or Phantom Labradoodle cost significantly more than a solid-colored cream, black, or gold Labradoodle. Sometimes, depending on your location, you may have to shell out extra dollars if you specifically want a multi-colored Labradoodle. Coat texture is another influencing factor. Shiny, sleek coats are more attractive and an indication of a superior bloodline. Hence, they are going to cost more. Curly and wavy-haired Labradoodles will be more expensive than straight-haired ones as they are almost non-shedding and hypoallergenic. Blue-eyed Labradoodles can be even more expensive, owing to their rarity and beauty. Labradoodle Size As they are crossbred, there are no specific breeding standards for Labradoodles. Most breeders classify Labradoodle puppy sizes as standard, medium, and miniature. Toy, teacup, miniature, and maxi are some other terms used to describe the size of Labradoodle dogs. The smaller the puppy size, the higher its price. This is because of the increased demand for smaller-sized dogs. Some breeders have their own standards and classifications when it comes to dog size and weight. While some breeders consider pound dogs as petite, others see them as miniature. Micro and petit are other terms that are used, both interchangeably and independently by different breeders. Usually, petit dogs fall in the pounds range, and micro dogs under 10 pounds. Age Typically, most people prefer buying a young puppy rather than a full-grown dog. Hence, prices are higher for puppies than dogs. For instance, a 6-month-old puppy is going to cost less than a 6-week-old one. A rich Apricot coat Labradoodle at the groomer. Generation Type Another determining factor is the percentage of each parent breed in the Labradoodle puppy. F1B generations have a purebred Poodle and an F1 generation Labradoodle as their parents. While this is a rarer generation, they are cheaper as their chances of being hypoallergenic is lesser than that of others. Generally, F1B Labradoodles are the most expensive generation as they have the highest chance of being hypoallergenic. Location and Demand The Labradoodle breed is one of the most popular crossbreed dogs, a close second to the Goldendoodles. This has significantly increased their value and demand. Dog breeders of bigger cities will have a large client pool and higher earnings. They usually have a hard time keeping up with the demands and hence have to increase their price. Breeders from rural areas have comparatively lower demand and charge less for their puppies. Nevertheless, the demand for low-shedding, hypoallergenic dogs is high everywhere, regardless of the size and popularity of a place. While it might be cheaper to buy your Labradoodle puppy from a rural breeder, you might still have to beat your budget to travel the extra distance or to have the puppy transferred to you. Although the low prices advertised at puppy mills might be tempting, getting a Labradoodle puppy from a reputed breeder is always a better option. Besides being spayed, neutered, and vaccinated, puppies from reputed breeders will also be appropriately socialized. This will make it easier for them to adapt to their new home. Most reputable breeders establish their prices based on their experience, investment, knowledge, credentials, and reputation with previous customers. Some breeders even incorporate training from a young age, and some puppies are potty trained at just eight weeks old. Reputed breeders also have health certificates and genetic records of both parent dogs in place. These certificates are proof that your Labradoodle is in the best of health and hygiene. Other Costs Associated With Labradoodles The preliminary cost of a Labradoodle will be substantially less than the total expenses involved throughout its life. Additionally, you might have to spend more on training foods and treats. Grooming The grooming needs of Labradoodles may vary depending on the type and length of their coat. Although Labradoodles are almost hypoallergenic, they need regular brushing and bathing. Medical Costs Most crossbreed dogs are usually less prone to ailments and diseases. Their larger gene pool also reduces their risk of inheriting diseases. One of the most common health issues with Labradoodle is hip dysplasia. And the surgical procedure to fix this is expensive, which is especially necessary for older Labradoodles. Besides this, there are other health care costs like vaccinations and regular veterinarian check-ups Ohio State Veterinary School source. It safeguards you against any unforeseen situations that may arise in the future with regard to its health. Training and Boarding Costs Although Labradoodles are very intelligent and highly trainable, it is advisable to enroll them in a professional training program to ensure their all-round development. It also helps address their excessive barking and jumping, which is common in Labradoodles. Labradoodles are high-energy dogs that can turn destructive when left alone for a long time. So whenever you go on trips, you will have to leave them at a doggie care center. Can Labradoodles smile? Ideally, you should purchase an adjustable crate whose length you can adjust as and when your puppy grows. Labradoodles are highly energetic dogs who need toys to maintain their mental stimulation and to keep them from getting destructive due to boredom. You might also have to make a one-time investment on a good quality bed as they often tend to chew and scratch at it. Labradoodle Adoption Price While you may want to get your Labradoodle puppy from a shelter, the chances are slim as Labradoodles are highly sought-after breeds that are usually kept in tight breeding groups. This is usually done to cover the cost of medical and maintenance care. Adopting a puppy from a rescue shelter is a noble idea, but you must also prepare to deal with any possible future problems with their health and temperament, as rescue dogs usually have health and behavior problems. My Miniature Labradoodle Max wearing a stylish rain coat Avoiding Disreputable Breeders The pet business has now emerged as one of the biggest industries worldwide. Unfortunately, this has also birthed unethical puppy mills, backyard breeders, and online pet stores, who have little to no knowledge about raising and nurturing puppies. Often, unsuspecting pet lovers trying to save some money fall prey to these tricks and end up with an unhealthy puppy with health and temperamental issues. This leads to them spending a lot of money on the treatment and maintenance of these puppies down the road. So, is there a way to distinguish between good and bad breeders and avoid paying exorbitant prices by accidentally supporting these puppy mills? Start by doing plenty of research on the breeder and consciously avoid backyard breeders, pet stores, and online stores. Additionally, look out for these red flags: Unusually low-priced puppies. The breeder refuses to show the living conditions of their dogs and puppies. Adult dogs are kept in harsh conditions and small cages. Puppies seem reserved, edgy, and nervous around people. The breeder has no health certificates of puppies and its parent dogs. Breeder refuses to provide any paperwork. Here are some standards and conventions practiced by trustworthy breeders: They breed puppies indoors and will take equal care of the parent dogs. They offer ample space and freedom to their puppies and dogs to run, play, sleep, and do everything they desire. They periodically clean and groom the dogs. They promote a healthy bonding of puppies with their mother and littermates. They try to gauge if you are capable of raising a particular dog breed. They offer tips and tricks on puppy care and maintenance. They have health and vaccination certificates from a licensed veterinarian. They offer proper legal protection like providing a guarantee for puppy replacement after around 1. Going through previous testimonials and customer reviews is another way of determining the credibility of a breeder. Find out how long the breeder has been in the business. Have a proper conversation with them and get all your puppy-related questions answered before you decide to get your puppy from them. With their love and affection, these bundles of joy can not only turn your bad days into wonderful ones, their high intelligence and alert minds also make them great guard dogs. Before purchasing a Labradoodle puppy, make sure to research the breeder and never get puppies from breeders who cannot provide health certificates for the puppies and their parents. It was developed in the late s in Australia with the objective of producing a hypoallergenic guide dog for people who suffer from allergies. The Labradoodle has become one of the most beloved Poodle mixed breeds in the world because of his gentle disposition, intelligence, and cute appearance. Like most hybrid dogs , LabraDoodle comes in varying sizes, colours, and overall looks. This Labrador Poodle mixed breed has an extensive list of nicknames. History Doodle is believed to have been first bred in Australia in .It was done in the hopes of creating a highly trainable and hypoallergenic guide dog for people allergic to dogs. The first successful cross between a Labrador Retriever and a standard Poodle was done by a man named Wally Conron. It produced a dog named Sultan, which became a guide dog for his new owner who was in need of a guide dog in Hawaii for ten years. The Labradoodle's trainability and gentle nature made him a sought-after breed, both as a guide dog and a family companion. In the present-day, he has also thrived as an assistance and therapy dog. Labradoodle dogs are usually bred by crossing a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. However, multigenerational breeding has been done to create a workable and recognisable breed hopefully. Since the Labradoodle is still considered a hybrid, he is not recognised by the Kennel Club. Appearance and Grooming How big do Labradoodles get? Like most hybrid dogs with parents that differ in size and looks, predicting the overall appearance and adult size of the Labradoodle is quite difficult. They usually exude a graceful appearance with a soft coat, which can either be any of the following textures: The fleece coat, which tends to be long and straight or wavy. This type of coat is low-shedding and has somewhat an angora coat texture because of its silkiness. The wool coat, which is made up of tight curls, takes after the Poodle. This curly-coated type is virtually non-shedding and hypoallergenic. The hair coat, which is the least popular coat type and often seen in first-generation Labradoodles. It takes after the Labrador Retriever, and it sheds profusely all-year-round. Do Labradoodles shed? Labradoodle is a low to average shedder. How much grooming your dog will require depends on the length and texture of the coat. Labradoodles usually only requires brushing once or twice a week. However, some of them might need to be professionally trimmed especially those with fleece coats. Bathing can be done as needed. Aside from brushing, grooming also entails clipping the nails every six to eight weeks and brushing his teeth a minimum of three times a week to prevent halitosis or bad breath. Cleaning your Doodle's ears weekly should also be a part of his regular grooming routine to prevent ear infections. Temperament and Intelligence Do Labradoodles make good pets? The Labradoodle dog breed is a popular choice not only because of his endearing appearance but also his friendly and loving nature. Like his parent breeds, he makes a delightful companion and family pet for children of all ages. He is an excellent match for first-time dog owners too. Whether being first or multigeneration Doodle, he generally will be a good-natured and gentle family dog. The LabraDoodle gets along well with other pets. However, supervision is a must during child—dog or other pet—dog interactions. This will prevent accidents from happening due to rough playing. The Doodle dog is highly trainable because of his intelligent and people-pleasing characteristics. However, as a high-energy dog, his training should include plenty of physically and mentally stimulating activities to match his brainpower. Nutrition and Feeding For an adult Labradoodle, a typical serving is 1 to 2. However, you can always prepare your pet's food, but make sure that you pair it with supplements to avoid nutrient deficiencies. Omega fatty acids could be added to keep your Labradoodle's coat healthy. It is advised to always check with your vet first before putting your Doodle on a new diet or starting with a new supplement. Health and Exercise How long do Labradoodles live? Cross-breeds are often said to be healthier and tend to live longer than purebreds. The Labradoodle is a great proof for this claim as his average lifespan is 12 to 15 years. However, like most breeds, Doodle can be predisposed to certain health problems, which include: Progressive retinal atrophy PRA. Close Prices How much to pay for a puppy is always tricky. Variance in the prices between breeders is confusing to families - we understand this. What's Included in the price - vaccines, kennel cough, microchip transfer spay etc? Parental health screening - the more tests, the more expense incurred Reputation and bloodlines We have checklists and questions which we suggest you ask your chosen breeder. These can help you know firstly, what you are buying ,and secondly, what's included. Why Us and our Cobberdogs? Finding a healthy dog from a reputable breeder can be a challenge. If you've never had an Australian Cobberdog or any dog for that matter , it can be difficult to work out whether a breeder's prices are reasonable or not. Our prices are due to the amount of health screening and training we provide. As a registered Australian Cobberdog breeder, we have pure Cobberdog lines, and are known for our outstanding service. Our dogs are happy and healthy, with a gentle, playful temperament. We are confident our prices are a reflection of all of this. In comparison to similar breeders, we're about average. There are definitely options more and less expensive out there. If you'd like to find out more about our history, experience and the team, please check out our about us page. You can also follow us on Facebook: doodleDogs and Instagram: auscobberdogs. We love receiving updates we call them pupdates from families who've adopted from us. These are often posted on our social media, but we've also gathered some on our testimonials page for you! Useful Links.

This means they can be prone to developing separation anxiety if you do not work with them on it early on. Instead, make sure your new Mini Goldendoodle puppy has an active role in your life. They tend to be sensitive to tone of voice as well. As long as training is consistent and focused on positive praise and reward, a Mini Goldendoodle will strive to be obedient and impress you and tends to excel at almost any task. Daily brushing is recommended to remove tangles and prevent mats. Bathing is occasional and can often be relegated to the dog groomer that is recommended you visit every weeks. The groomer can help handle some of this during visits, but you will still need to do some maintenance at home between visits. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed help prevent ear infections. Daily brushing, plus cleanings at the vet as needed, is good dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Although the parents of this breed have a lot of energy, a Mini Goldendoodle tends to sit in a more moderate activity range. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run are usually enough for them. But, they are also likely to match their energy level to yours, so be prepared for some bursts of energy as well as plenty of cuddling on the couch. Fully-grown Mini Goldendoodles usually stand inches tall at the shoulder. A Miniature Goldendoodle puppy can vary in size based on the generation of the dog. But have you ever come across a pug dressed for an occasion? Pugs are generally comical, but getting them dressed will be even more pleasurable. Your pug will be super cute and super cool. Dog clothes have lately become very popular with dog owners. They have an inclination to this area than other areas of dog ownership, well apart from the well-being of their lovely dogs. Pugs are known to be fairly obliging when it comes to dressing up and will almost try anything. While not all pugs will wear clothes and accessories, most of them will be just fine putting on something nice. The best approach is to ensure that you go for pug clothes and accessories that are designed to go on easily on him. For instance, the best bet is to go for clothing that you can put on your pug the way you put on a harness. You already know that your pug is a brachycephalic breed. His flat face and head structure make his respiratory system less efficient. As such, you should go for clothes and accessories that fit well but do not cut off his circulation. This is because they can trip you pug or they can become tangled in the clothes, which may, in turn, cause serious injuries. That being said, there are lots of benefits of dressing up your pug. What are some of the Benefits for Dressing up Your Pug? So is there any appropriate reason for dressing up your pug? Cold Weather — Of course, there are benefits of dressing up your pug and cold weather is obviously one of them. Cold climates can have adverse effects on the well-being of your pug. Dogs, by nature, are made for the cold. How about some Little Boots? You can imagine how your pug feels when you take him out for a walk in freezing cold weather. You should, therefore, go for some little nice boots if you always take him on regular walks on icy and salted pathways. But what can you do if you want to keep your pug cooler during extremely hot summers? Well, the best thing to do is to get your pug loose fit clothes and accessories that can protect him from scorching heat. For this reason, you can get your pug a cooling vest that can help regulate his temperature at normal levels, which is basically crucial for his well-being. You can also get him some cool eye shades or even sunscreen to protect him from getting sunburned. Dealing with Anxiety in Your Pugs In addition to keeping your pug warm during winter and cooler during summer, clothes and accessories can help your pug deal with anxiety. You can help your pug deal with anxiety by getting him a snug-fitting vest. A snug-fitting vest is basically made to make your pug feel safe and comfortable. So is it Cruel to Dress up Your Pug? For instance, cotton is breathable but can take longer to dry, especially during winter. Again, wool can bring warmth, but it can sometimes become itchy. The bottom line is to go for something depending on the weather and what you want to achieve with the clothing. Just remember not to choose something that will make your pug uncomfortable or hinder his air flow. For this reason, go for something that perfectly combines washable wool, acrylic, and cotton. So go for something that will last longer and remain comfortable for your pug. For example, your pug will be much happier if he can relieve himself without a struggle whilst dressed up. Keep in mind that the measurements do not have to be exact to the dot. Instead, go for something with a cm margin to afford you some leeway. So you can get someone to help you measure him. There are actually no written rules as to how you should dress your pug. However, the general rule is to ensure that your pug is very comfortable in any attire that you choose for him. You should, therefore, get him clothes and accessories that not only accentuate his already cute features but ensures his safety at all times. This will protect him from freezing. On the contrary, go for fresh, open, and loose fitting clothes during hot climates. Avoid Clothes and Accessories that are made with Zippers or Any Other Shiny Thing You should avoid buying clothes and accessories that are made with zippers. This is because the zipper can get stuck in the fur and can cause pain or injuries to your pug. For this reason, go for something that can be easily washed. In other words, go for something that can withstand lots of repeated washing. Do not exceed Your Budget just to Buy Your Pug Clothes and Accessories Keep in mind that pugs clothes and accessories do not come on the cheap and can leave big holes in your financial pockets. The best way to avoid this is by setting a budget that prevents you from going beyond your financial means. In short, choose wisely and remain within your means. Try to Avoid Pants Needless to say, you should avoid buying your pug pants. Instead go for coats, sweaters, t-shirts, vests and, accessories such as hats and shades. Avoiding pants is essential since it allows your pug to relieve himself with ease. If you, however, have to buy him pants, then go for pants that give him the freedom to relieve himself whenever he wants and with ease. Pug clothes and accessories, will not only enhance his already cute looks but will make him fashionable. Better still, clothes and accessories can help you protect him from adverse weather conditions. But even with all these benefits, there are lots of things that you should take into consideration when dressing up your pug. The most important factors are his safety and comfort. Therefore, go for clothes that will make your pug safe and comfortable. Bottom line? Do not force clothes and accessories on him. Start early in his life and it might not take him long before he claims a seat among the best-dressed dogs on Instagram or in town! We do not have a shelter, instead all of our rescued dogs are housed with caring foster families…a temporary stop on their way to happily-ever-after. The problem. The reason so many dogs and cats have to be rescued in the first place is that there are not enough homes. Too many dogs and cats are sadly born to die. Do your part, spay and neuter your pets and encourage others to do the same. The solution. We rescue White German Shepherds of all sizes, ages and personalities. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! This means that you must stay consistent when responding to their behavior. For example: If your pup jumps on you and you redirect their attention to a toy to chew on instead. But, then your pup jumps on your friend and your friend lets them and you say nothing. This makes it likely that your dog will jump on whoever they feel like in the future. Use reward-based training. Use reward-based German Shepherd training techniques to get the quickest results. Reward-based training helps your puppy recognize when something is a bad choice source. If a command is not executed the first time, show your puppy what you want them to do and make the command again. Repeat that until they can learn to obey the first time the command is made. Unless he is born with a hearing defect that is detected by a vet, your German Shepherd puppy has a perfect hearing ability. If you do, you will train him to be anxious or eventually create the idea that shouting is the norm. Otherwise, your poor puppy will be confused about what you expect and will not know how you want them to behave. Eventually Wean Your German Shepherd Puppy off Training Treats At some point, your puppy needs to learn that skills and commands are not learned or obeyed for the sole motive of a treat. For this reason, it is important to wean your puppy off treats when the time is right. The AKC Pet Insurance advises that this should be done when your dog has repeatedly performed the behavior or trick that you are training him in and mastered it completely. Nonetheless, your German Shepherd puppy is still a dog in training, and you need to replace the treat with some emotional reward. With these ten principles, you can now apply them to the key areas that your German Shepherd puppy needs to be trained in. It might be training for a sport in their early adult years or training to cope with an age-related life change. But, as a puppy, there are five key areas in which you must appropriately train your 8-week old German Shepherd. In the next section, I tell you what training entails for each of these areas. If you are looking for a step-by-step guide on how to train a German Shepherd , I have just the article for you. Humans become social through socialization. Canines become social with training. Humans who are well trained in the first years of life will be well behaved as adults. If you want some scientific proof to the rule that training your German Shepherd young is important for their adult life, here are two key findings from this study: Dogs that are well socialized as puppies will behave more positively with humans and are less likely to display behavioral problems such as fear and aggression. These dogs learn better how to play games with humans than those without proper socialization as puppies. Your dog will learn social skills throughout his life, depending on the situations that he gets exposed to. As a puppy, however, you can teach your German Shepherd socialization through intentional training moments in the family, in public places, or by sending the pup to socialization classes. Taking your German Shepherd out often to social places like parks exposes him to other people and dogs. This helps the canine to be less wary or aggressive around strangers. Being among other puppies also helps your little furry friend build confidence. The earlier mentioned study indicates that puppies can learn social skills better when put in socialization classes with other puppies. So, what does that mean? Usually, dogs will need to relieve themselves early in the morning and once they have had their meal. Use that natural rhythm as a reference for his daily pee or poop walks. Dogs hate messing up their sleeping space and will usually hold it. Nonetheless, young puppies might be unable to do so. If they learn that a relief walk happens first thing in the morning, though, they will eventually make an effort to hold it. Walk your dog after his morning meal and hang around for 15 minutes or so to give him time to do his thing. Repeat the same in the evening. In addition to this for dogs that have had their shots , a short walk every hours is an ideal routine to prevent your dog from peeing around the house. If you crate your puppy because you are out, find someone to help you stick to the routine. The best dog crates will give your pet enough room to stand, sit, turn, and lie down comfortably on his side with paws outstretched. When purchasing a crate for your puppy, you might go for the standard metal model with either a single or double door. I like the double door one as it gives you more options where you can place it in your home, and this one has a carrying handle which makes it easy to move around. Travel kennels like this Petmate Ultra Vari Kennel check Amazon for the latest price are also hardy when you are on the move with your dog, and this one even meets the cargo specifications for airlines. Here are five key things you should practice when crate-training your German Shepherd puppy: Keep your puppy in the crate at night always. Letting him into your bed should be a complete no. Initiate crate training from the very first day you bring your puppy home. It will be harder to succeed in crate training if your puppy gets the idea that there are other options. You will likely hear your 8-week-old German Shepherd puppy cry during the first night, but after that, he will be just fine. Keep your dog in the crate when you are out of the house and for his own safety, such as cooking in the kitchen or in exceptional situations like when you have visitors. Instead, reward good behavior in the crate. A blanket and some toys will offer some comfort for your dog. Older dogs may refrain from biting because they have been trained to. Learn Bite Inhibition Training! Contrary to the widespread idea that we should yelp like a puppy and quickly withdraw our hand or clothing when a puppy bites, the best way to teach your German Shepherd puppy that his bite hurts is to cry like the human that you are. If you watch the video, you will see what I mean. Do the same when they bite your clothing and other parts of the body like ears or hair. While doing this training, let your dog differentiate between a bite that hurts and one that is soft and part of playing. Also, training your puppy to soft bite is best initiated early in the first six weeks and continued until 4 to 5 months, or when they have mastered the art of soft biting. The best way to do this is to practice at home first before going out for walks with your pup. Consider the following steps: Introduce your German Shepherd puppy to a harness or collar and leash by first allowing him to get used to it gradually. You can play with your puppy for a while and give a treat before or soon after removing the leash. I find the best no-pull harness to be those that are not rear-attached. Give a treat when the command is obeyed. Introduce your puppy to short walks outside on a leash. Your puppy will get distracted during the walk and may try to pull. Do not pull back; instead, stand firm until he gives up and walks back toward you. Timing is crucial here. Reward every time commands are obeyed and gradually reduce the rewards as the art of walking on a leash is perfected. You can learn how to stop a GSD from pulling on the leash in this article. Final Thoughts 8-weeks-old is a good time to train a German Shepherd puppy in key areas such as socialization, crate training, potty training, leash training, and not biting. To successfully train your puppy in these areas, you must train them young and follow other good training principles like not shouting at your puppy, being consistent in your commands, and rewarding obedience to commands, among others. Always bear in mind that a puppy is just starting. So, be patient and begin with basic commands before introducing the more complex trick commands. Good luck with your new friend!
