With a bit of a stubborn streak as well, these dogs are known for their human-like personality and require a bit of patience to train. However, once trained, the Frenchie demonstrates remarkable intelligence and an eagerness to please beyond that of any other dog breed. Simply put, well bred French bulldog puppies are rare. This is especially true of the more popular colors of the breed, such as rare blue and chocolate, or white, and the even rarer pure blue, pure black, black and tan and blue and tan, which have a higher price too. More common brindle, sable, cream and fawn that are well bred are still expensive, but because they are not as sought after as the others, they are slightly more affordable. French bulldogs are not easy to breed. For starters, due to their narrow hips, Frenchies are incapable of breeding naturally and so a female must be artificially inseminated. This is a fairly expensive process that takes a significant amount of time. Secondly, a typical French bulldog female tends to have small litters, with an average number of live births topping off at four, but going as low as just one to two puppies. This makes it difficult for breeders to break even after vet costs and artificial insemination expenses. Third, because of their large heads and stocky shoulders, French bulldog puppies cannot be delivered naturally, as that would cause considerable damage, if not death, to the mother. Instead, they must be delivered via C-section, another expensive procedure. Lastly, puppies of this breed require a great deal of care and attention in their first weeks and even months of life. From needing to eat every three hours to ensuring that the mother never rolls over a member of her new litter it happens accidentally, but frequently , a rare French bulldog puppy requires round the clock attention that most caregivers just do not have and are not ready to provide with. On top of all that, the normal vet bills, cost of medications, toys price, food price, shelter and play area make upbringing a French bulldog a difficult and expensive endeavor. However, despite their high price tag, pups of all kinds and colors—miniature, teacup toy and French English bulldog mix, French bulldog Boston terrier mix and French bulldog Shih Tzu mix—are wonderful dogs that love their owner. Both genders united, male as female, are relatively low maintenance, enjoy lying around the house all day and will be there to cuddle with you any time of day or night. Caring for Your Cute French Bulldog As stated on American Kennel Club site, a French bulldog does not need a lot of exercise and in general, has fairly low energy levels. However, with that in mind, they do still need exercise to maintain a healthy weight. Short walks or fun playtime in a small yard is just the right amount of exercise that every bulldog needs and loves. They are not so high energy that they need a large play space to roam around in. An important thing to keep in mind is that bulldogs are prone to heat exhaustion and should not be taken out for exercise in high temperatures. Limit exercise and playtime to cool mornings and evenings. When training your Frenchie puppy, keep in mind that they are stubborn and may not respond to typical training techniques. Additionally, French bulldog puppies are not above chewing on your stuff or going to the bathroom in the house. You will still need to train your puppy to not chew on things that could harm them or that you do not want destroyed, as well as crate train them until they are fully housetrained. Feeding Most bulldogs eat 1 to 1. However, each dog is different, and how much you feed your adult bulldog will depend on his size, age, build, metabolism and activity level. Like people, dogs are individuals with their own individual needs. Grooming Because of their short hair, Frenchies are low maintenance and fairly easy to groom. They simply need an occasional brushing to keep their coat luxurious and healthy. When grooming your pup, check his skin for any bare spots, scabs, lesions, signs of infection or rough and flaky skin. Additionally, check his eyes, ears and teeth for any discharge or bad smells. Hemivertebrae: Hemivertebrae is a condition that is characterized by a malformation of one or more vertebrae. Though it can cause no pain to a dog, it can do the exact opposite for others and result in pain, weakness or even paralysis. Allergies: This breed is susceptible to food-based allergies, contact allergies and inhalant allergies a like, so keep an eye out for any reaction to anything new your pup has been introduced to. This can cause lameness or an abnormal limp. However, it is present at birth, which is something that any reputable breeder should inform you about. Cleft Palate: A cleft palate is characterized by a slit that runs bilaterally or unilaterally from the roof of the mouth to the nasal and oral cavities. It can be small in size to very large; the size of the cleft may mean a difference between a dog that survives to one that does not. When this happen, nerve transmissions become inhibited, causing chronic pain and discomfort. It may even result in temporary paralysis. Purchasing your puppy from a good breeder can significantly reduce your risk of getting a French bulldog with certain problems. Ask your breeder about the health of the parent dogs, as well as for complete medial records. Adopt Versus Buying French Bulldog Puppies for Sale Because French bulldog puppies are so expensive, many people try to adopt through shelters and other adoption agencies. While this is a very altruistic thing to do, it is not very wise. How to Select a Reputable Breeder Breeding French bulldogs is a difficult and expensive process and this kind of challenge is certainly not for everyone. In many cases, they will try to sell them anyway, just to get their money back. For this reason, you want to be extremely wary when shopping. Check your AKC community should you have more questions. At CT Breeder, we advise hopeful pet owners to do the following when looking for the right close seller, even that is not AKC registered: Contact Breeders: When contacting the seller, ask to see credentials and for pictures of past litters, registration documents. Ask about their breeding and post-birth process to determine whether or not they are actually worth meeting with. Visit the Breeders: Once you have spoken with them over the phone, narrow down your list of possible candidates, then schedule an in-home visit. Make note of every detail of the place, and look out for cleanliness, adequate food and water and proper toys. If you notice more than one dog breeding simultaneously, that should alert you as you may be at a puppy mill. Look Out for Puppy Mills: Puppy mills are sellers that breed several dogs at once just so they can make a quick buck. Request Documentation: Responsible breeders will be able to provide adequate medical records for the pup from a veterinarian. If they refuse, stay away. Finally, always thoroughly investigate or browse the seller about any potential health problems, family history and any other questions or concerns about your future puppy. The best breeders will be willing to address any and all concerns, while puppy mills will shy away from even your most basic questions. Finally, keep in mind the following last-minute tips: French bulldogs are not outdoor dogs, as the heat causes stress and overheating. Never leave your Frenchie alone in the car. We share the same words suggested to you to use so that puppy is familiar with the force free praise that encourages them to want to obey. French Bulldogs are one of the most popular small dog breeds and are known for their playful, adaptable, and affectionate nature, not to mention their big bat-like ears. How much exercise does an adult French Bulldog need? Around 60 minutes of daily exercise is plenty for these pooches. One way you can do this is by having multiple gentle walks daily with plenty of rest in between. PitPat will do it for you. How much exercise does a French Bulldog puppy need? Whilst they may seem like little balls of energy when it comes to walkies, they should be limited to around 5 minutes for each month of their age. So, for example, a four-month-old French Bulldog only needs 20 minutes of total walkies each day. This will help prevent overexercising them, which could cause joint and mobility issues in the long run. At this age, walkies should be spent exploring the world around them rather than a march around the block. Give them opportunities to do lots of sniffing, experience different types of places, and interact safely with new people and animals. As your French Bulldog edges closer to adolescence, the amount of exercise they need will increase. But by how much? Just download the PitPat app to get started. How much exercise does a senior French Bulldog need? As your dog gets older, the amount they need to walk will decrease. But again, by how much? Well, every dog is different, so let them set the pace. And if they look to be slowing down, it might be time to head home. Keep an eye on them, and if you notice them looking stiff, trailing behind, or struggling in any way, start reducing the length of their walks. Why not try some of these? Snuffle mats. English Bulldogs thrive in temperate climates and are sensitive to extreme heat or cold. In hot weather, they are likely to have trouble breathing and overheat, while in cold weather they can chill easily. Dress your dog for walks outside in cold temperatures e. Overheating is a common problem with English Bulldogs, who should be monitored carefully during exercise. Signs of heat exhaustion include heavy, labored breathing and panting; a swollen airway; a buildup of white foam in the throat due to heavy breathing ; vomiting; and a general look of distress. Heat exhaustion can cause death for this breed, so act fast and do the following: Remove your dog from the heat — bring them to a shady area or preferably inside, and turn on a fan. Keep your dog calm by reassuring them with a soft, soothing voice. Cool your dog down however possible — pour cool water on their extremities head, paws, tail ; rub ice around their head or under their tail or armpits; or place them in a cool bath do not use cold water — you risk hypothermia if your dog gets too cold. Take your dog's temperature rectally. A dog's normal temperature is about .Once you have reduced their temperature, take the dog to the vet. English Bulldogs are more susceptible to weak joints and injuries than other breeds due to their heavy weight and short limbs. They also have a high threshold for pain, which means that they may continue to run and play after suffering an injury, further damaging their joints or muscles. If you see your dog limping or exhibiting any other signs of injury, bring them inside to rest immediately or bring them to a vet if the injury seems severe. If your English Bulldog starts to look distressed or exhausted while exercising, stop immediately and have them rest. The breed is known for having irregular energy levels so sudden fatigue is not uncommon. Be sure to give your dog plenty of water and keep them calm during a bout of tiredness. As a breed, English Bulldogs have a comprised anatomy and are more susceptible to a long list of health ailments including dermatitis, hip and elbow dysplasia, heart disease, and degenerative spine disease than other breeds. Schedule regular appointments with your veterinarian and ask for specific advice on diet and exercise to keep your dog at a healthy weight. Your vet can also help you monitor your pet's joint and muscle health, and diagnose conditions like arthritis. Avoid these situations at all cost! It will get them off the couch, allow them to explore the neighborhood while spending quality time with their favorite human, and help to create an inseparable bond between you two. Keeping your Bully cool and comfortable during your walks is a huge priority. But, how do you keep them comfortable and safe? First and foremost.This will put way too much pressure on your Bully's esophagus when they pull. Also because of your Bulldog's thick neck, collars can easily slip off and leave your Bulldog free to run into traffic or other dangerous situation. So, you need a good chest harness.Since their bodies are quite unusual, so finding the best Bulldog harness can take some time. Proper fit and dynamic adjustability are the main keys here. Also, it's crucial that your harness puts NO pressure on your Bulldog's throat area, especially when they pull. Many cheaper harnesses slip forward and up on your Bulldog, making it hard for them to breath when they pull. When it comes to fit, be sure that the harness is light, not overbuilt your Bulldog already has plenty of padding! The harness should evenly dispersed chest pressure, insuring respiration is never hindered. Your Bulldog deserves better! You'll also want a harness that's easily washable and one that is reflective to keep you both safe during night walks. Then it's important that you start an exercise program sooner than later. Start light, walking 5 minutes at a time, a couple times a day. Add one more 5 minute walk each week, allowing your Bulldog to slowly build strength and stamina. Then after weeks, increase frequency and length of each walk. Reward your Bulldog with with more praise than treats, and only with healthy, small all-natural training treats. However, developing an effective exercise plan for your dog is perhaps easier than your slobbering cuddle buddy will let you know. Over exercise Exercise is important, and since this post is about exercising your bulldog, you may wonder why I am mentioning over exercising. After all, can you actually over exercise a dog? Yes, you sure can. However, a casual walk around the block may be more suitable. For english bulldog puppies, while they are a bundle of energy, a walk around the block may still be a little too much. Understanding over exercising is even more important to bulldog puppies who go through multiple critical growth periods where severe and even permanent damage can occur as a result of over exercise. How many minutes a day should my bulldog work out? Routine is good for bulldogs, and much like developing routines in eating habits to control overeating, an exercise routine as a puppy will help your bulldog keep their heart and muscles strong while limiting damage to their knee and hip joints. Limiting playtime before you encourage a slow-down period for your dog can go a long way to teaching your dog about exercise. For example, 30 minutes of playtime outside for an adult before bringing your dog indoors to slow down is a great way to manage an exercise routine. And after bringing your dog inside limit play times to about 10 minutes every couple hours if your dog is aggressively running around and playing. Low Impact Exercise As you can guess, taking your dog to a dog park, or going for a jog around the lake every day is probably too much for your dog. This means focusing on low-impact exercise that may not always mean running around. First, if you know your bulldog will be running around, you will want to consider the ground. Will your dog be running on cement? Crushed mulch? Wood chips? Or, grass? Softer, and more absorbent, ground is better for your bulldog. Bulldogs love to cuddle, gnaw, and roll around with their toys. Providing toys that will encourage your dog to move around, slow down, and roll around can be helpful. Bulldogs love companionship and are one of the friendliest dogs on the planet. Introducing a pal to bum around with is a great way for your dog to get some exercise and companionship. Whether you have other pets at home, or schedule play-dates, having a friend to roll around with is a great way to get exercise and keep your bulldog emotionally healthy as well. Supervision Supervision should always be considered a regular part of playtime. For example, your dog can go from playing without an issue to suddenly wheezing and limping. Remember too, that bulldogs have developed a high pain tolerance over centuries of warrior-like breeding. This means that your dog could be in pain and struggling, but not slow down. This is where constant supervision will help your dog the most. Signs of overheating, limping, and labored breathing are an indication that playtime is over for now. If the concern does not appear to be serious, or has only just begun it is okay to take your dog inside for a little welcomed relaxation. If you see signs of overheating such as an abnormally wobbly walk, falling down in a casual stride, or passing out, then you should contact your vet immediately. Playtime for your bulldog should be fun. The focus on exercise is to develop a strong heart and strong muscles. With a little routine and fun exercise your dog is on their way to a long and healthy life.
