It is irrelevant what your breeder tells you about breathing concerns as they pretty much all say their dogs have never had any breathing concerns! There is no testing, standard or certificates for breathing concerns so you need to follow the above guidelines. Shorter, wider necks, narrow nostrils and shorter noses all mean a much higher chance of breathing concerns. Longer noses, longer necks, wider nostrils and narrower chests are less chance of more severe concerns. There are some back scoring systems in place that your breeder may or may not have engaged in. Our concern is the current systems which are employed are grossly inadequate, passing healthy backs that potentially still have severe and significant problems. A grade 3 is a severe deformed vertebrae that has a high chance of causing pain or a prolapsed disc. A grade 2 is a moderately deformed one and a grade 1 a mildly deformed one. An overall score of 15 has been considered a pass, and reasonable to breed from. Potentially, such a score may entail 5 shocking grade 3 vertebrae if no other deformed ones exist , or 10 moderately deformed ones. Ask for the x-rays for both parents and pup if they have been done, and get your own brachycephalic vet to look at them and interpret any score that it comes with. At the very least, ask the exact score, how many of each type of vertebrae and where in the spine they are. There are different areas that carry different risks. In our opinion the standard is severely inadequate for breeding which is allowing this problem to continue. DNA Testing This one worries us the most. DNA testing is done for a number of extremely rare conditions that are almost nonexistent anyway, and none of them test for hemivertebrae or breathing concerns , allergies, hip dysplasia , cherry eyes , or any of the encephalitis seizure problems these breeds can suffer. Angulation refers to the angle degree of slant between two or more bones surrounding a joint. In show-line German Shepherds, it is rear angulation that distinguishes it most from working-line dogs. Anatomically, front angulation is usually dictated by the length of the upper arm humerus. A short upper arm results in decreased front angulation and restricted movement. The scapula and humerus should be approximately equal in length. The longer the lower leg, the greater the rear angulation and rear reach. This means the hock on the extended rear leg must be positioned perpendicular to the ground and the forelegs must be positioned directly under the body in a straight line down from the withers. As you can imagine, if your German Shepherd has poor hocks, there is little chance for good transmission. Energy will be directed toward the midline of the body if cow hocked instead of up and into the thighs. The incidence of injury in cow hocked dogs is very high due to the tremendous stress placed on the hock and stifle joints. If your German Shepherd has a powerful rear assembly with great rear reach—but it is not equally balanced in front—its rear components will overpower its front. The hind feet will likely strike the forefeet, causing your GSD to move crabwise—or even result in a high, over exaggerated front reach. Every component of the body must be balanced to achieve fluid, effortless motion with the least misdirection or loss of energy. The pelvis receives all the energy generated by the rear and serves as a bridge to allow that energy to pass seamlessly into the back. The amount of energy taken in by the pelvis is tremendous. Unlike the scapula, the pelvis is not connected to the spine with muscle, but is fused to the sacrum. A German Shepherd puppy that is born with a steep pelvis will have a steep pelvis as an adult. The angle does not change with maturity. Once energy passes through the pelvis, it moves into the spine toward the forehand. A strong, firm back is essential. The amount of energy being generated from the rear of dog D is so great that it is overpowering its front—causing the dog to flip up its front legs in an attempt to increase front reach. Now repeat the exercise until you can open the door and the dog stays in place. The toughest part of this exercise is getting the dog to stay put when he sees you walking into the house. You may need to remind him to STAY. Once you can get inside the house without your dog bolting on you, then you can invite him in with the release command or COME. One more reminder: the key to training dogs is repetition and consistency. It will be the consistency with this drill that will undermine your efforts. We have to work and spend time with family.
