Pups are exposed to sounds, sights, smells, humans of all sizes, and as many Auntie and Uncle dogs of varying types as we can recruit along with many other enriching activities stimuli. We even teach the puppies to swim and enjoy the water! Puppies will have had at least 3 car rides, some exposure to the leash and collar, and will have learned to volunteer good manners. Puppies have their very own room in our house and will be allowed to explore the living spaces when they become mobile. They are raised as part of the family, not in outdoor kennels. We believe that this is important to help prepare them for life as family members in their new homes. Further, all have good clearances for hips and elbows and eyes through OFA. Puppies will go home with their first sets of shots at 8 weeks of age and will have been wormed regularly as infants. Pups are weaned naturally with goat's milk mush made with quality puppy kibble, goat's milk, and a regular dose of prebiotic. Mama does a great job of letting pups know when she is no longer willing to nurse and we allow her to dry up naturally. Pups will be fully weaned onto a high quality puppy kibble well before they go home. Training open door policy open door policy We literally start training as soon as puppies can hear. We introduce sounds and help build their startle response along with desensitizing them to normal household sounds like the vacuum cleaner. I introduce the clicker as soon as I notice that the pups are operant, usually around 3 weeks. At that time, they learn to offer manners manding in exchange for treats and attention. Pups will be comfortable sleeping in and volunteering time in crates. However, you will need to expand on this training once they are away from the rest of the litter in your home. GRRAND was contacted by a shelter that feared bringing Athena and her pups into their shelter, because they were going to have to euthanize them all upon intake due of lack of space!! It took a village, but they are all safe, bathed and in foster homes! They all apparently lived in a barn stall, never leaving it, and standing on a ton of feces, which they were covered in when they arrived. Some of the pups are terrified, having lived in the barn stall, with no socialization, all their lives and are going to need families with a lot of patience! One of the supplies you will need is women's large foam rollers. The large size of rollers is usually pink, but do not rely on color to choose the correct size. Alternatively, you could use small pipe insulation tubing, which is available at home improvement stores. If you choose to use tubing, it should be about the same diameter as a large foam roller. The type of tape to use is very important! The best type of tape to use is white surgical tape two-inch wide 3M Micropore tape , which is available at your local pharmacy. Do not use duct tape or electrical tape. These types of tape are too adhesive and could damage your puppy's ears. You will also need glue Skin Bond adhesive is recommended and one or two unsharpened 2 pencils. A popsicle stick will be needed to serve as a 'bridge' between your puppy's ears after you have taped them. Remove the plastic rod from the middle of the roller. Next, insert the unsharpened pencil about 1 inch into the middle opening of the roller—this will help you stabilize the roller when you position it inside the ear. Continue to re-tape until the ears stand. If the ears are not up by 7 or 8 months, they are not going to come up. The ears should look like this once taped. The same dog with ears now up. I have seen ears that did not stand, which in my opinion would have stood had they been taped. So this process is not something to take lightly. I also need to say that many ears will be a little weak right after taping but with time, they will strengthen. So when an ear does not stand perfectly after taping don't panic. Just have patience and see what happens. You will really not have an idea exactly what you have until the pup is 12 months old. When ears do not stand, there are ear implants that can be surgically added. I have no experience with this and do not know anything about them. If you are unlucky enough to have a dog whose ears will not stand, I would point you toward a vet that has some experience in this area. I don't think it's something that normal small animal vets know how to do well. In my opinion, too young to tape. Health Here's another reason Labradoodles are good for first-time dog owners: They're a relatively healthy breed over their years of life. But being the ideal combination of Labs and poodles also means Labradoodles can be susceptible to the health problems of both their parent breeds. Some vets will advocate regular plucking, others may suggest trimming the hair, but regardless, keeping the hair minimal, and the ears clean, with the use of an ear cleanser or a drying agent will reduce the risk of problems. You pop the solution into each ear and massage it for seconds and then wipe it out with a tissue — never use ear buds! Check with your vet for tips on hair removal and which solution to use. Your dogs nails should be done each time they get their coat trimmed and this is a service most dog groomers usually do as part of their clip. If you choose to do this, be sure to get your groomer, or your vet to show you how to trim the nails correctly. Grooming How frequently you choose to get your dog clipped will depend on lifestyle, how long you want their coat to be and, your regular maintenance regimes.
