John Callaway pachelibre posted a TikTok video last week that documents lesson time for this delightful 3-week-old black Labrador retriever puppy. It shows the darling baby Labrador sitting on Callaway's chest facing the camera with his little puppy dog eyes looking right at ya! That's when Callaway lets out a gentle-yet-realistic howl. In response, the little tyke raises his head and tries to generate his best "awooo". Not much sound comes out, but the most charming part occurs at the end of the puppy's tiny howl when he yawns and makes the cutest Chewbacca-like roar—melting our hearts into a giant puppy puddle. The picture above shows Martha just a few days before she delivered her puppies. These pups are much older now and have already started their puppy training to become life-changing hearing dogs. We look into the breeds that best suit our deaf recipients , who the hearing dog mum and dad will be, and how compatible they are. Making sure mum and dad are a good match can get very scientific — but in short we make sure their genes will mix well together as this maximises the chance of healthy puppies being born. And this way, we can also make sure we have the best chance of getting a dog that will become a great hearing dog too. Hearing dog mums and dads known here as broods and stud dogs have been carefully selected to do this important job from a young age. They are usually picked because they have all the traits needed for a great hearing dog — such as a gentle temperament, strong ability to learn and general good health. The mums live with our volunteers called brood holders who look after the newborn puppies until they are about eight weeks old. However, just like humans, there are a few early tell-tale signs of dog pregnancy: Dogs are known to get morning sickness — just like us. They can also go off their food as they feel a bit nauseous. A pregnant dog will also feel really lethargic and tired, sometimes even refusing to go for her favourite walk. Around four or five weeks after mating, mum will have a scan so we can get a rough idea of how many pups are in the litter. And just like human pregnancy scans, the vet will check the size of the puppies and make sure all their heartbeats are normal. They even give us a scan photo and video! The all-important preparation Just as a human family prepares for the arrival of a newborn baby, we make sure our brood holder and hearing dog mum are both ready for the new puppies! Our puppy supply supervisors also known as our puppy midwives are fully supportive of the mum and brood holders throughout the pregnancy. They are always popping in to check everything is going well, but during their visit two weeks before a mum is due to give birth — around day 60 or nine weeks into the pregnancy — they bring round lots of goodies including: A whelping box for the mum and pups to sleep and rest in A baby monitor for the brood holder at night-time A heat pad and hot water bottle to keep the pups warm if mum needs the loo Lots of fun puppy toys for when the pups are a bit older! Our puppy midwives are on call to answer any questions they might have. The labour Although our puppy midwives can give a brood holder a rough idea of what to expect during the labour, there are no prep talks or antenatal classes for our hearing dog mum. She seems to know it all instinctively. The newborn puppies Once a puppy is born and mum has chewed through their umbilical cords, our puppy supply supervisors picks them up and give them a quick check over. They note the sex of the puppy and the time of the birth — just like human midwives do. They also weigh them before giving them back to their mum to clean up. Birth Immediately after birth, a puppy should be guided to suckle. The mother passes important antibodies and nutrients to their litter in these first hours and days that support their healthy development. Birth Behavior At birth, puppies' eyes are closed, so they cannot see. That being said, a puppy will navigate their way to their mother and litter mates using scent and touch for warmth, care, and nutrition. Puppies will spend the majority of their time sleeping at this early stage. Thanks to the nutrition provided by their mother, they will quickly begin to put on weight. How much weight the puppy gains in their first few days is determined by the breed size. Puppies should normally gain around 2 - 4g a day for each kilogram of an adult dog of the same breed. Birth Environment In newborn puppies, thermoregulation is not fully mature, so in the first hours it's crucial that they are kept in the right environment. Their whelping box should be kept at between .After this, temperatures may be gradually decreased to approximately .The birthing box should also be in a well-aired area that's not too drafty or stuffy. Birth Health The major challenge of birth for puppies is to became autonomous for breath, heat and feeding to survive to this very critical moment. Almost immediately after birth, a breeder will weigh the puppies to give an outline of their condition and identify any puppies under the expected birth weight. Birth weight and growth rate during the first 48 hours are key parameters for breeders to give an outline of a litter's condition and identify any puppies at risk of neonatal mortality. Birth Nutrition It's important that puppies suckle as soon as possible after they are born. Neonatal The neonatal period extends from birth until around three weeks. This stage can also be known as the vegetative phase as, externally, most of a their life seems to be dominated by sleep and a few reflex activities. This is vital to healthy development, and care should be taken to avoid disturbing the litter or the mother. Both senses will be weak at first, but will improve as they progress. The vet will check for birth defects and general well-being. Towards the end of this period it is a good idea to start worming treatments. As they grow older, they may start to show interest in their mother's food. With the introduction of solids, the weaning process begins. Weaning Weaning is a crucial period in puppyhood, as it signifies the moment when they start to gain their independence. A responsible breeder will provide puppies with an increasing amount of human interaction, a range of toys, noise and other stimuli as this stage progresses. The vast majority of food is taken through milk, however, at this stage puppies begin to have more interest in their mother's food. Most will now be able to lap water from a bowl. Puppyhood Puppies begin to learn to live with others. Behaviors learned in this phase will have a huge impact on a puppy's life. Puppies have a natural capacity for learning at this age, so it's important that lessons learned during this time need to be adhered to, and training and wider socialization needs to be maintained. This will help your puppy develop into a confident, well-behaved adult dog. Milk teeth are replaced by adult teeth, and an adult coat replaces the puppy coat. Somewhere between six to 12 months your puppy may begin to lift his leg, or enter her first heat period. Exploring a range of outdoor environments and being exposed to new experiences will stimulate learning, breed self-confidence, and generate a stronger bond between puppy and owner. Getting into good habits now will aid development and set your puppy up for a healthy future. Becoming an adult Although they are all members of the same species, different dog breeds can be poles apart in terms of size, weight, and nutritional requirements. These differences really come to the forefront during the puppy growth period. The five breed sizes all reach adulthood at varying ages. Extra Small breed dogs can reach full maturity at 8 months, while giant breeds are not considered fully grown until 2 years old. Up to eight or nine months, large and giant puppies experience rapid skeletal growth, with the remaining months focusing on developing muscle until they reach their adult bodyweight 70 times their birthweight in large breeds and times their birthweight in giant breeds. At this point, it's time to gradually transition them onto an adult food that supports the nutritional requirements of their size, breed, and lifestyle. The Neonatal Stage 0 to 2 weeks This is the newborn puppy growth stage that lasts until two weeks of age. At this developmental stage, puppies are blind and deaf. Expect puppies at this point to sleep almost constantly and their mother will take care of everything, keeping them warm, feeding them, and keeping them clean. The Transitional Stage 2 to 4 weeks At this puppy growth stage , they will start to open up their eyes and respond to sounds, light, and movement around them. You will also notice a puppy at this point starting to get more mobile, although they will still tend to crawl instead of walking. Lab puppies open their eyes at about two weeks old. By this time, Labrador puppies will have their eyes fully open and most will be at least partly open. Ears open at this point too and your puppy will begin to hear. Period of Awakening of Senses 3 to 4 weeks At this period , a puppy develops various senses rapidly. They start to get fully alert and aware of their environment and may recognize you and other humans that are frequently around. The Socialization Period 4 to 7 Weeks Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings. Interactions with humans are especially important between five and seven weeks. This is also the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge. As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite. During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life. To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline. You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of human contact during this stage. If you want, you can start leash training and even teach simple commands such as sit, down, stay and come. In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder. Adolescence 6 to 18 Months After six months, your pup is already in the final stage of puppy development but is still young. This is a fun and exciting time for your pooch since they will be learning, full of energy, and exuberant. During this time, it is important to remember that even if your puppy now looks like a grown-up dog, they are still a puppy, at least in its mental capacity and emotional maturity. Work to slowly increase training and other activities. You can even work on advanced training such as agility or herding. Another option is to simply keep training them to ensure they interact in a non-aggressive and non-threatening way with other animals. It is also possible that your dog will go through another fearful period of time at some point after they reach six months. You can speed up the process with counter-conditioning and desensitization. It fits very well and is quite apt! Final Thoughts With the knowledge of how and when your new puppy will develop, you are better able to meet their needs. Provide socialization at the appropriate times and be sure to give your puppy plenty of social interactions with their siblings as well as humans and any other pets in your home. Look for trembling, hiding, uncontrollable bowels, pacing, or tail tucking. Some dogs act normal when you are getting ready to leave for the day, and then progressively gets worse throughout the day. This kind of behavior suggests that the dog is just experiencing boredom rather than anxiety. Crates are no place to spend all day long One of the solutions that some Golden owners turn to is the crate. If you are going to be gone for a long, extended day, then a crate is not the solution. Your dog loves sitting in his crate if you have crate trained him correctly. For him, his crate is like your favorite chair or spot on the sectional. There are some really serious issues that can stem from leaving a dog in a crate for too long. Dogs have to go to the bathroom regularly. Does your dog have the ability to relieve himself during the day or does he need someone to let him out for potty breaks? Is your Golden Retriever going to get bored during the day or have you prepared some form of mental stimulation during the day? Does your Golden have access to sufficient water and food or will you have to be there to divvy out the rations? Is the temperature-controlled or will your dog be stuck outside in the event of an unexpected change in weather hotter or colder? Bored dogs can cause problems at home all alone. Is your dog going to have room to roam? If your dog can get up and wander around without a problem and even run a bit, then your Golden can stay home for a while. What if your dog is going to be confined to his properly-sized crate? If a crate is your only option, then you should not leave your Golden Retriever alone while you are at work. What about potty breaks while you are gone? If your dog can get to an appropriate bathroom place completely on his own, then this will not be a limiting factor. On the other hand, if your dog requires you to let him out or back in, then you cannot leave him alone as long. You or someone else will have to visit your dog at least every 4 to 5 hours depending on his age. Puppies will have to get out even more often than that. What will your Golden Retriever do for fun while he is alone? There are several different scenarios that might keep your dog mentally stimulated throughout the day. For example, take a KONG toy and fill it with water-soaked dog food. Then hang it from a string. The more of these kinds of things you have around your house, the longer your Retriever will be okay on his own. Can your dog take care of his thirst on his own? Unlike food where you can limit how often your dog eats to once or twice a day for older Golden Retrievers, your dog should have access throughout the day. Especially in the summer. This should be pretty easy. If you need to, just buy an extra water bowl and make sure that they are both filled when you leave. Will your dog be able to handle a sudden change in temperature or weather on his own? I know that the weatherman where you live is probably never wrong. Where I live, however, it seems like I have a better chance in Vegas than the weatherman getting the weather right on any given day. What will he do if it turns cold? What if it starts raining? Does your dog have a place to go to get out of these unforeseen turns in temperatures? Your dog needs an insulated dog house or a doggy door into your garage. Too hot or too cold can be too dangerous for your dog. If you ever wondered what is too hot or too cold, then you need to check out these articles. Puppies are high maintenance. You have to get them out more often. When it comes to puppies you need to establish and stick to a serious feeding and crate schedule. This is the only way for your to puppy to get the nutrition he needs to feed his growing body. Ways to successfully leave a Golden Retriever home alone There are several things you can do to successfully leave a Golden Retriever home alone. Some of them I have mentioned above. Leave your Goldie with some puzzles with hidden surprises. I already mentioned the KONG treat hanging from a branch in the yard or the underside of the table. This is the Trixie Activity Flip Board. Your dog has to move the different pieces to get the hidden treats. Prices on the internet change sometimes from day to day. Click here to see how much the Flip Board is today. You can fill this with treats before you leave. While you are gone, your dog has to push it around to get his reward. You can click here to see how much it is today. So, why not let your puppy in on the action. Your pooch may find a favorite TV show or movie that will keep him occupied for a couple of hours. No reason that your Golden Retriever cannot take part in a Netflix binge of their own every now and then. Here is one of their videos from YouTube. Pet experts and scientists have designed the programming to do one of three specific things: relax, stimulate, and expose. The exposure programs can be especially helpful in your socialization program. Come home for lunch Sometimes, if you can arrange it right, you can come home during lunch and give your dog an extended break outside. If you live close enough to work or can take an extended lunchtime , then you could give your dog just enough exercise and stimulation in the middle of the day to last until you get home for the evening. Get someone to let your pooch out Depending on your relationship with your neighbors, you can ask one of them to get your dog out once or twice during the day. This is usually not a problem if leaving your dog a couple of times. Get a dog walker If you are looking for a long-term solution, then consider a local dog walking service. Depending on the options in your area, you can usually arrange for someone to come to your house every day at a specified time and walk, feed, and water your dog. Bring your dog to work What if nothing I have mentioned works for you? Well, you can do what I do. Every now and then, I throw my dog in the back of the truck and take her to work. In fact, today, I took both of my dogs with me to work. There are some things that you will need to make sure of before you get carried away. For example, if your Golden is a barker, then your other co-workers will probably not appreciate you bringing your dog. Also, if your schedule is cram-packed with meetings, this is not a good option. I only take my Labradors with me if I know that I can get out of the office about every hour and a half to two hours so that my dog can get out and get out and run around for a bit. Conclusion Like everything else with owning a dog, whether or not you can leave your Golden Retriever alone depends on your specific situation. If you live on 40 acres and your dog can just run around all day long with a way to get inside if the weather turns ugly, then absolutely you can leave him home. He will thrive in that situation. So, can you leave a Golden Retriever at home alone? As a whole, Golden Retrievers can be left alone with no issues, provided they have access to water and chews toys. However, someone should check on the dog within four to six hours, and owners should teach their Golden Retriever how to be alone to mitigate separation anxiety issues. Instead of curling up right next to me on the couch at night, he sometimes snoozes on the floor. But, again, this is because he's comfortable being away from me. Knowing that he's comfortable being away from me while I'm home shows me that he is not distressed when I'm gone during the day. Keep them entertained The best way to decrease your dog's stress while you're away is to keep them entertained. You can do a myriad of things to keep them distracted from your disappearance. Toys While it may seem obvious that toys will entertain your dog, there are only some that can keep your dog entertained for long periods of time while you're away. Regular balls and stuffed toys will become incredibly boring if you aren't there to interact with them. So, I leave chew and enrichment toys with my pups while I go to work. Chew Toys Nylabone Chews are one of my dog's favorite toys. These chews are bone-shaped and have different flavors depending on the pack you buy. My favorite thing about them is that they last for a long time and don't impact my dog's gut health. Rawhide chews and other hide-based toys can break off in chunks that your dog can swallow. Not only is this a choking risk, but it can also cause serious digestive issues if a lot of it is consumed. My dogs cannot break Nylabone Chews into chunks as they chew. Instead, the bone slowly wears down into soft, fine mush that is safe to ingest and won't get stuck in their intestines. These chews take a long time for my dogs to go through, I bought a pack over three months ago, and they've hardly made a dent in the bones! My other favorite chew toy to leave with my dogs is anything made by KONG. These rubber toys are safe and durable for dogs to chew on. Since he was a puppy, he is now 5 years old, and it doesn't have a mark. When he was a puppy, he would lay in his crate and gnaw on the thing all day. Enrichment Toys If I know I will be gone for a long time; I leave enrichment toys in my dog's kennels with them. Medication If your dog is continually messing up the house while you're away and seems anxious when you are home, this may be signs of separation anxiety. She stated the puppy left there with medicine for the disease obviously they were aware of the problem and acted like this is normal and stated this was all our fault for over stressing the puppy. That call was followed with a letter from their attorney stating they have no further obligation with the puppy or his care. The first thing to understand, though, is the need for repetition and consistency. Begin by purchasing the appropriate size crate. Think den not condo! It should be small with just enough room for your bulldog to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. It is not an exercise pen. The use of too large a crate will encourage your bulldog puppy to use a small portion of it for a bed and the rest of it as a place to potty. We use the Midwest Life Stages crates. Leave the crate door open and allow your bulldog puppy to come and go as he pleases. Keep his favorite treats handy that you only use for the crate. It gives the puppy a nice reason to go in and creates a positive experience. At mealtimes, feed your bulldog in the crate with the door closed. At night, just before bedtime take your bulldog puppy out to potty. Put your puppy in his crate and shut the door. For the first 3 nights set your alarm for 3 hours. Set him down and wait. When he goes potty, praise him and put him back in his crate. Set your alarm for 3 more hours and repeat. After three days, if it has been successful and there have been no accidents, move to 4-hour intervals. After three more nights, you have hopefully taught your puppy that you will be there to take him outside when he has to go. If there have been no accidents you can then start going to bed and waiting until your puppy wakes you up to potty. It is important to respond and take him out immediately if he wakes during the night. In the morning, as soon as you wake up, immediately take your puppy out. By house time, I mean freedom to move about but always in the same room as you so that you can keep a constant eye on him. We use baby gates to block off access to other rooms. During the day repeat the above process and continue to take the puppy out every hour. If he does not do his business put him back in his crate and try again in 15 minutes. NEVER let a bulldog puppy in training out of your site. Use the crate as you would a playpen for a human child. Even if you leave the room for a minute, either take the puppy with you or put him in the crate. If you turn your back for 60 seconds and your puppy has an accident, then you messed up and made a mistake and have missed the opportunity to make a correction and teach the puppy. Do not rub his nose in it and do not use any physical correction! When he goes outside give him lots of praise. Use an odor neutralizer. When an accident occurs it is important to completely remove the odor, otherwise your puppy will gravitate back to the area to relieve himself again. You can buy the neutralizers from most any pet store. Do not use household cleaners, most contain ammonia which will attract him back to the same spot.
