If you are going to be gone for many hours a day, longer than the puppy can physically hold it, it is better to pen the dog in an area such as the kitchen where the floors are easy to clean up and place some pee pads down. This can really give the puppy a bad start in life and will be no fault of its own when they do not understand the concept of housebreaking.
