The design of Julius K9 means that it is going to take mere seconds to clip everything into place. One strap under the belly. One strap around the area below the neck, and you are done. This is a dog harness that professional dog handlers often use, which should give you an idea as to the build quality. It is built to last, no matter how rugged the conditions get. Oh, and as an added touch, the team that makes the Julius K9 can also make a harness patch. You get one included in the box, but they can make one up with your own text if you want. It is your choice! Of course, there will be an extra fee for this. It is just not as rugged. So, if you liked the PoyPet option but felt that it was a bit out of your range, then check out the Eagloo option. It is highly breathable, and it has been padded in all the right places. This means that your dog could probably wear it for hours and hours on end without any complaints! This means a more comfortable and, perhaps more importantly, happier dog! The construction means that this harness is still going to last years, even if your dog is a terribly lousy puller. As the name suggests, this is for the dog that enjoys being outside. Which, to be honest, is pretty much every single dog. The first time you clip it onto your dog, you will need to make a small amount of adjustment. However, you have a lot of leeway in the straps. This means that you will be able to get the most perfect and comfortable fit for your pet. Once all that adjustment is made, it never changes. You can just clip on and clip off the harness whenever you want, safe in the knowledge that it will be correctly adjusted to your dog still. This harness has been built with strength in mind. These harnesses have been tested to well more than any pulling strength that a dog is capable of by all accounts. The harness has still managed to hold together. Conclusion We have included six different dog harnesses for Goldendoodles here. We promise you, all of them are going to be brilliant at their job. We suggest you go through and take a look at each of them individually. Whichever one you buy, we can assure you that you will be more than happy with it. Pick 2: rabbitgoo No Pull Adjustable Dog Harness — This adjustable harness has two leash attachment rings — front and back — to suit your needs. Collars vs Harnesses For Goldendoodles Collars are the most common option for dogs. And, of course, you might do very well with just a collar. Obviously, this may cause your pup to cough and choke if too much pressure is applied. The most important thing when choosing the best dog harness for Goldendoodle is to select one that fits your pup perfectly. However, girth diameter is the best way to determine if the harness will actually fit your Doodle. To do this, put two fingers between your pup and the harness. Keep in mind that your puppy will outgrow their harness once they start to reach adulthood. But how do you choose the best harness for Goldendoodle? In addition to measuring your Doodle, you should also consider what your special needs are. Does your Doodle like to pull a lot? Which harness is easier to put on? Do you need extra durable material? Also, you should consider your climate. These might make some Doodles get too hot when exercising, especially since Doodles tend to run hot to begin with. These usually come with a padded layer to provide your dog extra comfort and reduce friction on the skin. No-Pull Harness No-pull harnesses are designed to minimize your dog pulling the leash. Of course, just owning a no-pull harness does not guarantee that your Doodle will magically stop pulling. All dogs are unique and grow at their own rate. Pro Tip: Check out our complete guide to puppy care to ensure your Lab gets off to a great start. As a medium to large breed, Labrador Retrievers need at least one year to reach their full size. A general rule of thumb suggests your Lab should be at or close to its full size by their first birthday. However, bigger-boned Lab puppies can keep growing and filling out their chest up to 18 months old. How big should a 6-month-old Labrador Retriever be? The average Lab weight at six months old is about 40 to 55 pounds for males or 30 to 35 pounds for females. Please keep in mind that these numbers are averages, and every puppy will grow at a slightly different rate. How much bigger will my Labrador Retriever get? There are three ways to predict the size of a Labrador Retriever at maturity: Age. Labrador Retrievers typically reach their full height and weight around their first birthday. Larger Labs may need up to 18 months to fill out their chest, but any weight gain after 12 months should be minimal overall. If your Lab is less than a year old, they are likely still growing and putting on muscle to reach their adult size. Paw Size. If their paws look oversized next to their legs and body, then they are probably still growing, as this is a classic puppy feature. Lastly, if you purchased your Lab through a breeder, you can contact them for a more exact height and weight estimate. What is the size of a full-grown Labrador Retriever? A full-grown Labrador Retriever weighs between 65 and 80 pounds and stands about .The average weight of a full-grown female Labrador Retriever should be about 55 to 70 pounds, standing at .Make sure to consult with your veterinarian to ensure that your Lab is maintaining a healthy weight for its body size. The Labrador Retriever growth rate should be indicative of its athletic body and muscular build. Did you know. ? Their webbed paws made them strong swimmers, along with their otter tail, which acts like a powerful rudder when retrieving ducks. English nobles spotted the dogs and brought them home across the Atlantic, where breeders continued to refine the breed into its own variation. Between their friendly demeanor, adaptability, and outgoing disposition, they make ideal family members. As cherished members of our families, Labs deserve the best care. Unfortunately, like many other purebred dogs, Labrador Retrievers are more susceptible to various health issues. Some of the most common examples include:. Life Span Did You Know? There is a reason that year after year, the Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in the United States. The history of the Labrador Retriever dates back to the early s in Newfoundland, just off the Atlantic coast of Canada. Had these families not played a vital part in the continuation of the breed, the loving and affectionate Labs we have all grown to love may not exist today. The first recognized Yellow Labrador Retriever was born in .One of the friendliest breeds out there, Yellow Labs are great companions and love to be a part of the family. While the color yellow is part of their namesake, their coats range from fawn or cream to butterscotch or a deep golden hue. Coming into popularity during the midth century, the Yellow Labrador Retriever has been a staple for hunters and family homes alike ever since. These dogs are patient and kind when faced with energetic young ones. Yellow Labs delight in big spaces, opting to run and play wildly. However, they will happily lounge on the couch after having a long, hard run outside. When given a little training, they can easily learn to control barking habits and restrain themselves from digging. Their double coat also makes them a good fit for just about any climate. As with most dogs, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold. Generally speaking, Labradors are healthy. They can develop certain inherent conditions, along with cataracts and kneecap displacement, but will remain healthy overall. As long as they are taken to their vet appointments with regularity, Labs will usually feel just fine. Yellow Labs are loyal companions with few drawbacks. Treats never hurt, of course. This, paired with their eagerness to please, makes them a highly trainable dog breed that is a good fit for owners of any experience level. With minimal training, these dogs can control their barking and digging without much trouble. Labs have very short, double-layered, and water-resistant fur. Its density protects them from the cold, so they will often try to swim any time of year. They experience heavier seasonal shedding twice a year and slight shedding throughout the year. Giving them a good brush once a week or a few times a week should keep their coats shiny and healthy. Other grooming tasks include nail trimming, ear care, and dental care. Proper dental care for dogs includes brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day. This helps prevent the tartar buildup that causes dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. You can also supplement your dental care efforts with dental hygiene chews, a special dental care diet, and more. This breed tends to be very active. They were bred to be working dogs and need exercise. A few daily walks and some time to run should help assuage their energy levels. Yellow Labs also need a fair amount of mental activity as well; they like to stay sharp. Yellow Labs are classified as medium to large dogs. They reach an average height of 23 inches and an average healthy weight of 75 pounds. A Yellow Labrador Retriever generally lives years. It was traditional in Newfoundland for every fishing boat to have a Labrador Retriever that would help retrieve the fish as they came in off the trawl. Featured Yellow Labrador Retriever Article.

She is already so comfortable here and so attached. She gets so excited every time she sees us. And she has such a sweet disposition Everything goes for her. She just rolls with it. She loves to play and has lots of playful energy when she chases behind a toy or plays tug of war. But she loves to cuddle too, and she can busy herself well too without complaint. Yesterday we left her home when we went on a walk and she never barked or whined and was fast asleep when we returned. She accepted her crate as if she had never known any other place to rest. She just crawls in there and rests when she is tired. And when she wakes up, she quietly plays until we take her out of the playpen. Her potty training is going well. A couple of accidents here and there, but most of the time we catch her before anything happens, and she always does her business right away when we put her on the grass patch we have on the patio. She is getting a treat when she does her business. So, she actually figured out that if she spares some pee and squats several times, she will get several treats. Only One treat for the first time, everything after does not get rewarded any more. Wow, I have never seen a puppy learning that fast. And loving to learn. Being really food driven helps. I could not think of a better quarantine buddy to brighten up our day. I think she will be an amazing therapy dog who brightens up the day if many more people. Oh, and did I mention she is absolutely beautiful? Thank you again for that gift, Michele. I hope you are all doing well and are coping with the many new puppies. Some stressful days ahead of you, I am sure. And you are the best puppy mom I have ever encountered. Lots of love to your whole beautiful family! Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for New York Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. What type of Golden Retrievers are sold in New York? We have some good news! Ready to make your Golden Retriever dreams come true? Take a look at our convenient list of available puppies. How do I know which breeders to trust in New York? In spite of their size, they think they are lap dogs, and in spite of being dogs, they think they are also human, and nearly every human they meet is judged to have the potential to be a boon companion who might, at many moment, cry, "Let's go! I do not have a wait list. I have golden retriever puppies for sale perhaps once or twice a year. Because I breed infrequently, I can not guarantee I will have a puppy that meets your needs by any set time. I'd hate to have families waiting for a puppy and find I do not have one for them. After a litter arrives and I know what I have in terms of numbers and gender, then I can get serious about reviewing questionnaires submitted by interested families, and I contact people to discuss the specifics once the pups are a few weeks old. The pups require a great deal of time and attention, so it can take me a little while after a litter arrives to get to this part of the placement process. Please keep in mind that I breed golden retriever puppies in northern Virginia, and I do not ship puppies. Do I get to pick which pup I want? I place the pups based on the pups' individual characteristics and each family's specific requirements. I obviously take your preferences into consideration, but your puppy's personality should fit the lifestyle you'll have with him for the next 12 or so years. I raise the pups in my home. For their first few weeks the pups are in my family room with my family, other dogs, and cats, and, after they are old enough and need more room to move freely, the pups move to a large pen in my basement with access to an outdoor pen. All of my dogs are house dogs; the pups are not raised in a kennel. As the pups mature, I spend a great deal of time with them, getting to know their individual personalities. I also watch how they move and determine which have the best conformation. As they get older, they are exposed to many different sounds, textures, flooring and ground surfaces, environments, and people. During this socialization process, I learn which pups would be best suited to which types of homes, and I place them accordingly. Show, performance and working homes take priority, and homes who already have an Eta D'Oro dog generally also take priority. I get frequent inquiries regarding my pups, and I do save those questionnaires as they come in. However, I find most people are not willing to wait the several months, or longer, it may take before I actually have pups available to go to their homes. Accordingly, I do not have extensive contact with most potential buyers until I have pups that are several weeks old. I don't want to waste anyone's time until I know I have a puppy available. That being said, I like to get to know my puppy buyers as much as I can before they take their new puppy home. I often have folks come to visit the pups when they are old enough, and our initial phone conversation s often take a little time so you can learn about me and my dogs, and so I can learn as much as I can about the type of dog that fits into your family. A laid-back dog might be better suited to a less active family, and a higher energy dog would be better suited to an active family. Why health testing? All my dogs are health tested prior to breeding. Health testing means so much more than just a vet check. It's testing in specific areas by board certified veterinarians to ensure my breeding dogs meet the standards expected of breeders under the GRCA Code of Ethics, a standard designed to ensure the entire breed is as healthy as possible, and that buyers get the most healthy pups possible. By testing for things like eye, cardiac, and joint issues and by DNA testing for several common genetic conditions common to golden retrievers, I can ensure I am doing all I can to produce healthy puppies that grow into long-lived, healthy dogs. I test for all the things the GRCA wants its breeders to test for, and do additional testing, as well. For example, all my current breeding animals get heart clearances by echocardiogram, not only by auscultation. While there is no way to guarantee nothing bad will ever happen, I want to do everything I can to reduce or in some cases even eliminate the risk. How do you choose to do a particular breeding? My dogs are purposefully bred, versatile golden retrievers. I have kept or co-own at least one dog from almost every breeding I have done. One of my goals with all of my breedings is to produce pups I would want to keep for myself, and that I will be proud to have in the various competition venues representing my kennel. I also want them to be much loved companion golden retrievers. To meet those goals, I need to produce long-lived, healthy, correct, versatile dogs that can do all the things a golden is supposed to be able to do. I look for health and longevity when picking a sire, and I look for dogs that are physically correct meet the breed standard , have the correct golden disposition, and will be a good match for my girls. Many of the sires of my litters have produced well in the past, which is a good indicator of what they'll produce with my girls. For some breedings, I am looking for dogs with certain skills or capabilities prominent in the pedigrees. In others I am looking to improve upon what I have, to better some area I feel could be improved in my dogs on the whole. I am also careful not to lose the features I particularly like and that are correct in my dogs. I spend many, many hours reviewing pedigrees, observing dogs and talking to breeders and owners about their dogs, as well as others who may be familiar with their pedigrees from before I started watching those things. For the time being, you won't be able to meet both parents here at my home when you visit. My dogs are all related too closely to breed them to each other. In fact, I have done breedings with long deceased sires, choosing to use their frozen semen because they are very well known quantities; they have adult pups out there that help me evaluate what the sire will bring to a breeding, and I have life-long health and longevity information on both the sire and his other offspring. In other cases, I have had semen shipped from the far reaches of the country. This capability gives me the opportunity to expand the gene pool I use in my breedings, and I can search out the healthiest and best matches for my girls. I also have done local breedings by live cover, but it is a great benefit not to be limited by access to only local boys. What will our relationship be after one of your pups comes home with me? I usually set up closed Facebook groups for each litter so puppy buyers can stay in touch with each other, ask questions of me or each other, and so folks can share pictures, triumphs, and news. I have found it a great way to stay in touch, but not everyone is on Facebook, and those who are may not be frequent Facebook users. Be assured I am always accessible to answer your questions, and will always be happy to take your dog back and find him or her a great new home in the event you are no longer able to care for your pup due to health, personal, financial, or any other reasons. None of my dogs need ever become rescue dogs. I love these pups from a time before they are even born, and will always do what is best for them. I even have buyers that have put it in their wills that their dogs come back to me when the time comes, because they know I will put the dogs first. What are your requirements in terms of spay or neuter? For a good number of years, peer reviewed studies and vets and breeders whom I trust have agreed that early spay or neuter is very dangerous to the short- and long-term health of dogs. Everything from orthopedic issues, cancers, and fear of storms can be blamed in part on early spay and neuter. At the very least, I want my dogs to remain intact not spayed or neutered for long enough for the hormones to do their job getting the pups' bones and bodies to maturity. For girls, they should remain intact for at least two heat cycles, and for boys ideally until at least 2 years. I can tell you my boys do not reach full physical maturity until around three, so for their bones, joints, and skulls and other things less obvious to fully mature, I'd prefer they not be neutered ever, but at least not until they are three. Neutering a dog does not affect his instinct to mark. Training affects that. Neutering does not affect his instinct to mount other dogs as a dominance play. Training does. Neutering an aggressive dog does not alleviate his aggressiveness. Neutering a dog does greatly increase his risk of cancers common in goldens. You can often identify a dog spayed or neutered young by its disproportionately long, gangly legs. Those growth plates in the legs were still open when the hormones were removed from the dog, and growth no longer could continue in a balanced way. Buyers are often looking for good bone and big heads on their goldens, particularly the boys. Those things come with maturity while the hormones are intact. What is your guidance on vaccination? My general rule is to keep vaccinations to a minimum. I am not an antivaxer; vaccinations are vital to our dogs' health. For example, without vaccination, parvo kills puppies. I know breeders and dog owners who have lost puppies to parvo. These diseases we vaccinate against are serious. However, I believe in limiting vaccinations to the ones required, at the frequency required. My puppies will have their first round of puppy vaccinations before they go to their homes. After that, vaccinations need only be done if the dog needs additional protection. Titer testing will tell you if that is the case. My foundation bitch received puppy shots and then no further vaccinations other than periodic 3-year rabies as required by law where I live. At her senior physical at age 9, she was found by titer testing to still be fully protected against those things she was vaccinated against as a pup. Research what vaccinations are recommended where you live. Leptospirosis is common in some areas, very rare in others. The various dog influenza vaccines do not protect against all strains of flu, do not last long, and are not fully effective. Balancing the risk of infection essentially a contagious cough unless the infected dog has underlying conditions that make it hard to fight the infection against the effectiveness of the vaccine, consider if it is really worth putting those chemicals into your dog's body. Bordetella kennel cough vaccination is required by some boarding facilities, so you may feel forced to get that. However, it also does not protect against all strains, is not fully effective, and does not last long. I do not vaccinate for Bordetella. It is a cough that lasts several days, and can be treated if it is bacterial. In addition, I recommend vaccinating smartly - the fewer vaccinations given at a time, the less risk for complications. Vaccinating a dog weakened by some other condition or illness, for example an infection, can also lead to complications or reactions. Don't let a vet pressure you into doing anything unsafe for your dog. Your puppy can't advocate for him- or herself, and needs you to look out for him or her. The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. A post shared by Joey Senft jsenftphotography There are varying reports about the exact history of the King Shepherd. According to the International Shiloh Shepherd Alliance , the King Shepherd began as a Shiloh Shepherd and splintered away when a breeder had a different vision for her dogs. The American King Shepherd Club is less specific. They do not mention the Shiloh as part of their breeding program, nor do they specifically mention the Great Pyrenees or Akitas. They report that the King Shepherd was founded by mixing German Shepherds with flock guardians and then breeding them back to Old German Shepherds from Europe. Either way, it seems evident that the origins of the King Shepherd are entwined with the Shiloh Shepherd. The Shiloh Shepherd began as a breed by Tina Barber, who had grown frustrated with the health and temperament issues in some German Shepherd lines. The King Shepherd split from the Shiloh Shepherd lines when David Turkheimer and Shelly Watts-Cross developed their own vision for the breed and wanted more of a working dog. So today, both breeds have their own association and breed standard. The King Shepherd is significantly larger than the German Shepherd. It also only has two coat types, straight and rough, or long and silky. On the other hand, the German Shepherd can have plush, double, or long-haired. There is also a difference in temperament. King Shepherds are bred to be stable and reliable dogs, but they may also be more independent and have a stubborn streak. Meanwhile, the German Shepherd is generally a highly trainable dog, provided it comes from good lines. What are the Physical Features of the King Shepherd? Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. King Shepherds are prone to weight gain. Choose a high quality food and stick to a feeding schedule. Make sure your dog gets at least 60 to 90 minutes of walking or hiking per day, which will help keep them fit. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. One of the toughest jobs when caring for any animal is maintaining their oral health. You should brush their teeth a minimum of three times per week. Normal play on grass is fine, as is puppy agility with one-inch jumps. King Shepherd Feeding An ideal King Shepherd diet should be formulated for a large-sized breed with moderate energy. Limit their amount of treats, as well. The main coat colors are fawn, red, black, brown, and sable. Their coats are usually a combination of two or more colors. They usually have medium-length, normal density coats, and while they are not a good choice of dog for allergy sufferers, their coats are pretty easy to care for. A good brushing three times a week will probably do the job and bathing is recommended only as needed with a mild shampoo. Too much bathing can strip the coat of its natural oils. Their double coats do shed quite a bit. You will definitely want a vacuum on hand. See if a RoboVac is right for you! That double coat gives them an edge when it comes to extreme weather. Many of these dogs absolutely love to run and play in the snow. Their double coats also help to keep them cool during hot summer months. A gentle giant, they are patient and sweet with kids. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. King Shepherds are nice to strangers and can get along well with dogs and other household pets, including cats. Early socialization is an important factor for developing a social dog. King Shepherd Rescue Groups Because the King Shepherd is a somewhat rare hybrid dog breed, it may be difficult to find a breed specific rescue. However, you can always check with your local shelter, and you may want to try a rescue that caters to all kinds of dogs. You can take a look at the following:. Originating in the United States in the s, these dogs were originally bred to create a German shepherd mix that had fewer health issues than a purebred German shepherd. American breeders David Turkheimer and Shelley Watts-Cross first bred a German shepherd with a shiloh shepherd a hybrid of German shepherds and Alaskan malamutes to elevate the best qualities of the German shepherd. In order to achieve the long-haired look they wanted, the breeders also incorporated long-haired German shepherds from European lineages. These European lines didn't just give king shepherds their distinctive coats, but they also boosted genetic variation. This was essential to reduce the risk of genetic issues that have become common in longstanding lineages because of inbreeding. Because king shepherds are a relatively new breed—and still fairly rare among American families—they are not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club. Between their grooming and exercise requirements, king shepherds need lots of time, energy, and attention in order to thrive. Exercise King shepherds are a high-energy breed that needs extensive exercise. Strenuous activity for at least one hour per day is a must. These dogs thrive in active, single-family homes with lots of space to run, walk, explore, and play. Because they're also very intelligent, king shepherds benefit from exercise routines that incorporate mental stimulation. Playing games like fetch, tug-of-war, or hide and seek are great ways for owners to keep this breed entertained. These dogs also excel in canine sports like agility training. King shepherds can become bored very easily, so it's vital to keep them engaged—and exercised—to prevent them from becoming destructive. Grooming King shepherds have thick, double coats that shed heavily. Brushing your dog several times per week or even daily can help reduce shedding and keep their coat healthy, clean, and tangle-free. It is very important to have a dog vacuum when owning a king shepherd. When it comes to baths, the king shepherd only requires standard bathing every three to four months. Check your dog's ears and clean its teeth regularly to prevent infections. If your king shepherd is especially active, running and walking can help keep their nails worn down, but trimmings should be performed as necessary. Training King shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, making training relatively simple for owners that are consistent and engaging. Basic obedience lessons can start in puppyhood between eight and 16 weeks of age, while more involved training should continue through the dog's life. Because king shepherds are so eager to please their family members, they can learn simple commands fairly quickly. Begin socializing your dog when you first bring him or her home to ensure they stay friendly and well-mannered with strangers and other animals. Pixabay Common Health Problems While king shepherds are generally healthy dogs, they're still prone to certain health issues like most breeds. Responsible breeders will test parent dogs for inherited diseases to prevent passing problems on to puppies; however, this breed's genetic variation does offer additional protection against genetic disorders. The following are common conditions that king shepherds may experience: Elbow and Hip Dysplasia : This condition causes a malformation in your dog's joints as they grow, which can lead to pain, instability, or weakness. Dysplasia is especially common in large-breed dogs. Von Willebrand Disease : This genetic disorder affects the blood's ability to clot after injury. Hypothyroidism : Affecting the thyroid, this endocrine disease reduces your dog's metabolic rate, which can lead to weight gain and other health problems in the future. Your veterinarian may recommend preventative surgery to tack the stomach down. Eye issues : Specific to the breed issues include pannus, glaucoma, and corneal dystroph. Allergies : King Shepherds are at risk for skin allergies like canine atopic dermatitis. Bloat : Since this breed has a large gastrointestinal tract, they are at risk for gastric dilatation volvulus GDV , which is a life-threatening condition. Diet and Nutrition Feed your king shepherd a high-quality diet with plenty of protein. This breed typically eats between three and four cups of dry food per day, and it's important to split these portions into several smaller meals to help prevent bloat. Since king shepherds are also prone to joint problems, owners should be especially mindful of their dog's weight. Canine obesity or excessive weight gain can put added stress on your dog's joints. To create a meal plan with the proper nutrients and portions, talk to your veterinarian about the best diet based on your specific dog's age, weight, and activity level. Where to Adopt or Buy a King Shepherd Before adding a king shepherd to your family, ensure that your home, schedule, and lifestyle can accommodate this large, energetic breed. These dogs require considerable grooming and daily strenuous exercise. Since king shepherds are still a new dog breed, they're not as likely to be found in shelters as their German shepherd cousins. Visit your local shelter to meet similar dogs in need of forever homes. If you plan to purchase a king s puppy, it's essential to research responsible breeders that readily provide the litter's family medical history. Your breeder should also allow you to meet the litter's parents and see the conditions in which their dogs are kept. To start your search, check out these breeding clubs dedicated to King Shepherds:. The King shepherd breed has only been around since the s, which is recent compared to the lengthy history of the German shepherd. The pair is also trying to make the dogs larger. While David and Sally began working on the breed in the early s, the breed did not become officially recognized until .The breed became recognized because a King shepherd breeding club was established. King shepherds share many traits with German shepherds. Therefore, most King shepherds have a similar appearance to German shepherds. Still, there are some variations because King shepherds are a mixed breed. While their coats are similar, the biggest difference can be found in the size of the dogs. While German shepherds are large dogs, King shepherds are typically even larger and thicker. King shepherds were specifically bred this way to prevent some of the health issues that German shepherds face. What Size Is a King Shepherd? King shepherds are between 2. When standing on their back legs, King shepherds can be about as tall as the average human female. This makes King shepherds larger on average than German shepherds. King shepherds also have more mass on them. On average, they weigh between 90 and pounds. There is a lot of variation because of the potential mixed breeds used for breeding. King shepherds have medium-length coats. Their coats are soft to touch and pet, and feel snuggly against your body and hands. King shepherds can also have many color tones in their coats reds, browns, grays, and even black but they do shed often. For this reason, you have to maintain their coat to prevent health problems and discomfort. King shepherds are mellow dogs, but they can get excited, especially as a puppy. That said, King shepherds calm down as they grow older and only bark when provoked. Are King Shepherds Affectionate? King shepherds may be big dogs, but they feel like small dogs on the inside. This is why many King shepherds choose to lay on their owners and sleep in the same bed. King shepherds also love to play and get attention from their owners. King shepherds are good with kids for a few reasons. While they can be aggressive at times, King shepherds and toddlers can become best friends for life. King shepherds are social dogs. King shepherds get along with dogs, cats, and even some smaller pets. That said, we recommend introducing the animals at younger ages and giving them time to socialize. With King shepherds, this can take some patience and even training. Are King Shepherds Aggressive? King shepherds are not aggressive dogs. This is because of their calm temperament and low energy level compared to other breeds. When aggressive, though, King shepherds become dangerous because of their size and build. For this reason, we recommend training your King shepherd well and making sure you treat them appropriately just like you should with any dog! Do King Shepherds Bark a Lot? While King shepherds bark frequently during their puppy years, they grow out of this phase quickly. As they get older, King shepherds begin to bark less. Are King Shepherds Intelligent? King shepherds are intelligent dogs. Because of their intelligence, King shepherds are easy to train and be around. Are King Shepherds Easy to Train? King shepherds are easy to train for a few reasons. This helps them cruise through training with ease. We recommend against overloading them with commands, but you should begin training at a young age. King shepherds are also easy to potty train. Are King Shepherds Energetic? That said, they begin to grow mellow as they age. This occurs because of their calm temperament and larger size. Compared to small dogs that love to bark, King shepherds are quiet and lazy. Still, King shepherds love to play and have plenty of energy to use for outdoor activities. In fact, King shepherds are only mellow around the house. This is what makes them great dogs for first-time owners. King shepherds are not good apartment dogs unless you have a large apartment. Because King shepherds are larger and heavier than German shepherds, they need a lot of space and exercise. This makes King shepherds a bad fit for people who live in urban environments. Their size can also make it challenging for landlords to be okay with allowing you to have a pet on the property, especially if the dog frightens other tenants. Are King Shepherds Good Watchdogs? King shepherds are excellent watchdogs. While they are not aggressive towards their owners, unwanted guests can draw barks and growls out of King shepherds. This can alert owners to potential dangers and other issues. King shepherds can also serve as guard dogs if needed. King shepherds are great service dogs. The breed can be used in ways that German shepherds can be used, which makes them flexible. King shepherds can be used for police work, hunting, tracking, emotional support, therapy, and more. These dogs can also help people with disabilities that make it hard to walk or see things. How to Care for a King Shepherd? Caring for a King shepherd is similar to caring for a German shepherd. German shepherds have a mild temperament unless provoked and are easy to train. Therefore, King shepherds are easy to care for as long as you groom them, brush them, play with them, and provide them with the right food. King shepherds need to be groomed. While you can get away with grooming them less often if you brush them, not grooming a King shepherd leads to problems. This is because of their frequent shedding and soft coat. Without grooming, King shepherds become knotty, dirty, and even unhappy. Therefore, we recommend frequent brushing and grooming to keep your furry friend happy. Do King Shepherds Shed? King shepherds shed as much as German shepherds, which is a lot. There are also some seasons where King shepherds will shed more. You should also let guests know that loose hair will be around to prevent allergic reactions. With a King shepherd, having no hair around is almost impossible. What Should a King Shepherd Eat? While fats and carbs are helpful for King shepherds, carbs can make them hungrier throughout the day. In fact, we recommend replacing carbs with fats instead if possible. For the food, we recommend lean meats like chicken and fish alongside fiber-rich veggies. Many food brands are designed specifically for German shepherds and King shepherds. Remember, King shepherds are larger, so they require more food. King shepherds were bred to be resistant to health problems. While the breed is still a work in progress, King shepherds are less likely to suffer from the same ailments that German shepherds face. That said, the breeds do share some of the same health risks. The head is in good proportion to the body and moderately wide between the eyes. The forehead, seen from in front and in profile, is only slightly rounded, with or without a medial furrow which is moderately well defined. The cheeks are not too full, are moderately curved, when viewed from the top should be much in the form of a "V," and are well filled in under the eyes. The thick, firm ears are of medium size, moderately wide at the base, set on high and pointed; they are carried erect and slightly forward puppies up to the age of months, and sometimes older, do not carry their ears completely erect. The eyes are medium size and almond-shaped, set somewhat aslant and not protuberant, as nearly as possible matching the surrounding coat in shades of brown, and from very light to dark are acceptable. The chest is deep and broad. Thickly feathered, the tail reaches at least to the hocks. The tail is carried down and slightly curved; when excited or in movement, the dog raises the tail, which becomes more curved, without however, going beyond the vertical. It must not, moreover, lie on or curl up on the back. Docked tails are inadmissible. The paws are round and short with a well-closed, arched. The pads are very hard. The nails are short and strong, generally dark in color. Dewclaws are usually removed. The King Shepherd comes in a wide range of acceptable colors. These are as follows: sable brownish tan with brown or black markings, or grayish silver with black markings ; black saddle with tan, gold, cream, tan or silver markings. Strong, rich colors and pigments are highly preferred. Small white spots on the chest are acceptable. Pale, washed-out colors are serious faults. The undercoat is invariably little colored, except in black dogs. White, blue or liver-colored dogs or a dog with a nose that is not black are not accepted in the show ring. Puppies change color from birth until they get their final coat. There are two coat varieties: coarse-haired, which is straight and longhaired, which is light and wavy. Temperament The King Shepherd is self-confident with a well-balanced nervous system and should not be shy. Extremely intelligent and easy to train. Faithful and eager to please its owner, this breed makes a fine working dog and sheep-herder. A courageous watch and guard dog showing courage and hardiness in his role of protector, it makes a very nice companion. The King Shepherd is full of strength and vigor. Friendly toward strangers, children and other animals. A docile, obedient breed with an easy gait and plenty of stamina. The objective in training this dog is to achieve pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in its pack. When we humans live with dogs , we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because a dog communicates his displeasure with growling and eventually biting, all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. The humans must be the ones making the decisions, not the dogs. That is the only way your relationship with your dog can be a complete success. It does best with at least a large yard. Exercise The King Shepherd love strenuous activity, preferably combined with training of some kind, for this dog is very intelligent and craves a good challenge. It needs to be taken on a daily, brisk, long walk , jog or run alongside you when you bicycle. If under-exercised, this breed can become restless and destructive. While out on the walk the dog must be made to heel beside or behind the person holding the lead, as in a dog's mind the leader leads the way, and that leader needs to be the human. Life Expectancy. King Shepherd vs. Many believe the German shepherd dog or GSD is the most majestic of all dog breeds, but his majesty may need to move over — the king shepherd is trying to claim that crown. With a name as regal as its appearance, the king shepherd shares part of its ancestry with the German shepherd. The two dogs look alike and have a lot in common, but they have distinct differences, too. German shepherd — for a head-to-head comparison. Instead, king shepherds are considered hybrid dogs. Because German shepherd and king shepherd breeds were created during different time periods, they were also bred for different reasons. German Shepherds Bred in Germany by Captain Max von Stephanitz, German shepherds were created from a mixture of the best local herding dogs. Rather than being bred for looks, they were bred for their intelligence and excellence in the field. A few generations of breeding eventually lead to a breed standard for both looks and temperament. Plus, their desire to protect their flock and family made this dog a good choice as a family dog, watchdog, or guard dog. They even made it big in Hollywood where Rin Tin Tin became the most famous dog in America in the s. This breed became and remains one of the most popular dog breeds in America. Their popularity led to high demand for German shepherd puppies, which led to overbreeding and a variety of health issues. King Shepherds King shepherds were first bred in the early s. Shiloh shepherds are a mix of American German shepherds, old European lines of German shepherds, and Alaskan malamutes. King shepherds are still suited for a wide variety of jobs, and they can make good police dogs, service dogs, and search and rescue workers. Because of their malamute genes, they also sometimes work in cart pulling. However, the king shepherd is recognized by the American Rare Breed Association and the American King Shepherd Club , which has set a breed standard for its looks and temperament. German Shepherd: Looks The king shepherd looks like a larger German shepherd the opposite of a Belgian Malinois , which looks like a smaller German shepherd. King shepherds have a wider, more square frame, without the sloping back often seen in purebred GSDs. Both king and German shepherds have dense double coats with a rough, weather resistant top coat and a soft, insulating undercoat that sheds heavily twice a year. Both breeds come in a variety of coat colors, including black, black and tan, sable, and bicolor coats. To care for their coats, both breeds will need to be brushed times a week to remove loose hair and distribute their natural oils throughout their coats. And to keep their coat healthy, both breeds benefit from a daily fish oil supplement. German Shepherd: Personality The German shepherd is a high-energy working dog that needs plenty of exercise and mental stimulation. King shepherds were bred to be companion dogs as much as working dogs. They move a little slower than GSDs and are gentle giants that make great family pets. When it comes to German shepherds, different breeders specialize in different traits. Some breeders focus on breeding highly motivated working dogs for police and military operations. Others specifically breed companion dogs. Because of their large sizes, both breeds will be easier to manage with early socialization and obedience training. Their high intelligence makes them quick learners that respond well to consistent training. German Shepherd: Health The king shepherd was bred with health in mind — breeders hoped to create a healthier version of the GSD. Mixed breed dogs are less prone to health issues than purebred dogs. However, king shepherds are also larger, and larger dogs tend to have shorter life expectancies than smaller dogs. Still, in spite of their large size, king shepherds do have longer lifespans years than German shepherds years. So, to an extent, breeders succeeded in their goal. However, because they have such a long line of German shepherd ancestry, King shepherds can still inherit the same genetic health issues that are common in GSDs. These issues include:.

At a bare minimum this program includes: early neurological stimulation called ENS or Biosensor , early scent introduction ESI , introduction to crates, car rides, birds or bird wings, gunfire from a distance, water weather permitting , outdoor adventures in different types of environments, daily loud noises, introduction to potty training and lots of socialization with adults, kids and other dogs. We strive to give every puppy the best start possible. By the time they are ready to go to their new homes at 8 weeks of age, each puppy should be well prepared for whatever direction their new family takes them. Our very first litter was in and then we took a short hiatus from breeding until .Since resuming, we have had tremendous success with our very limited number of litters. The majority of our puppies have gone to homes where they live as part of the family and have proven themselves as exceptional hunting-working-competition dogs.

Primarily it affects fatty bone marrow and has subsequent effects on the surrounding bone Shell .It can occur in any bone that contains a significant volume of marrow but, as marrow is largely found in the diaphysis shafts of the long bones, these are the most commonly affected sites. Long bones are the bones of the limbs. They are essentially supporting columns that have to carry the weight of the animal. These epiphyses have an outer layer of compact bone and spongy bone in their centre. Between the epiphyses and the diaphysis in young animals are the growth, or epiphyseal, plates which are the zones in which bone lengthening occurs. The diaphysis the shaft of the bone has, in cross section, an outer thin fibrous layer of tissue called the periosteum and, inside this, a wide layer of compact bone which provides the strength. In the centre of the shaft is the bone marrow cavity that contains the soft, blood cell producing, haemopoietic bone marrow and yellow fatty bone marrow. Bone is a dynamic, living tissue that can slowly respond to the forces exerted on it by remodelling, strengthening and repairing itself. To do this it has cells called osteoblasts which produce bone and osteoclasts which dissolve it. In animals affected with panosteitis, the fat cells of the yellow marrow degenerate, inflammation occurs and this tissue is replaced with fibrous tissue, which in turn is calcified and turned into spongy bone tissue, as osteoblasts, osteoclasts and fibroblasts fibrous tissue-producing cells are activated Shell , Brooks .Ultimately, as the disease process subsides, this new bone is removed as part of the normal bone remodelling processes and the fatty marrow regenerates. The causes of panosteitis are unknown Shell , Brooks .Various possible causes have been proposed as listed below. The theory is that high protein levels lead to oedema fluid collection and retention within the tissues of the medullary cavity. As the bone is rigid this extra volume of fluid causes compression of blood vessels and to inadequate blood supply to the tissues of the bone, leading to inflammation ischaemia Schawalder et al a, b, Shell .Because some breeds of dogs including GSDs and Bassett hounds are predisposed to the disease, the implication is that there may be a genetic cause to the condition Brooks .Stress is often thought to play a role Shell .Generally affecting juvenile dogs, the disease is usually self-limiting and spontaneously regresses once sexual maturity is reached between months of age, but some individuals may be still affected in middle-age Bohning et al , Berry .Males are affected more frequently than females Trostel et al , Shell .Affected dogs may be lethargic, show a loss of appetite and have a raised temperature. These signs often last from a few days to a few weeks, disappear and then reoccur i. Handling the limb may elicit a pain response. Reoccurrences of the signs may coincide with periods of stress Shell .Until spontaneous regression of the condition occurs, pain-relieving medicating is often needed and reduction of stress and activity levels are also recommended Shell .Return to top 2. Intensity of welfare impact During bouts of panosteitis, affected GSDs exhibit signs of significant limb pain. They react to having the affected bones touched. Affected dogs also often feel ill due to fever. Return to top 3. Duration of welfare impact The disease usually starts at between five and 18 months of age and is often recurrent. It regresses in most individuals once they reach sexual maturity at between months, but some GSDs are affected until they are seven years of age Bohning et al , Berry .Individual bouts may last for weeks to months at a time Shell .Return to top 4. Number of animals affected The GSD is the breed most commonly affected with panosteitis. Return to top 5. Diagnosis Panosteitis may be suspected in a juvenile GSD showing lameness. However other orthopaedic conditions also commonly occur in young GSDs so confirmation of the diagnosis needs to be made using radiography x-rays Shell , Berry .The radiographic appearance of the tissues of the bone changes during the course of the condition and such radiographic changes lag behind the clinical signs by about days so it is possible for an affected dog to have initial lameness without being able to detect corresponding radiographic changes Shell .This can make diagnosis difficult. Blood tests may show an eosinophilia higher than normal concentrations of a particular white blood cell type Shell .Return to top 6. There is no genetic test for the disease. Return to top 7. How do you know if an animal is a carrier or likely to become affected? It is not known if unaffected carriers of the gene s exist - animals that do not have the disease themselves but are able to pass on the gene s that cause the disease to their offspring - and, as far as we know, there is no information about the heritability of panosteitis in GSDs. Return to top 8. Methods and prospects for elimination of the problem As far as we are aware, there are no breeding schemes aimed at reducing the incidence of panosteitis. With the current state of knowledge it is difficult to give good advice. Generally it seems sensible not to breed from individuals that have been affected by the disease or which have more than a very few affected relatives including siblings and siblings of parents Bell .Prospective dog owners may wish to avoid acquiring dogs of breeds in which there is a high prevalence of the disease in order to help avoid perpetuating the problem unless they are able to ascertain that the disease does not occur or is very rare in the particular lineage of the dog they are interested in acquiring. Return to top 9. By Emily A. Fassbaugh, DVM on Oct. Panosteitis in dogs, also known as pano, is a condition that affects the long bones of the legs. Because it most commonly affects large-breed dogs that are less than 2 years old, it has been called growing pains in dogs. Unfortunately, it can occur in multiple legs and move to a different leg after the first leg gets better. Symptoms of Panosteitis in Dogs The predominant symptom of panosteitis is limping and leg pain. The pain can come on suddenly and then resolve very quickly. It can also be hard to know when your dog is in pain. If you gently squeeze the long bones of their leg, sometimes your dog will cry out or pull the leg away in pain. It can be so painful that they will not want to use the affected leg. Causes of Panosteitis in Dogs Panosteitis in dogs is similar to growing pains in people. Because large-breed dogs—especially German Shepherds —are prone to it, there is a genetic component to this disease, but there is no identifiable gene mutation that causes it. Typically, it occurs between 6 months and 2 years of age, but you can sometimes see it in German Shepherds over 2 years of age. The disease affects the mid-shaft of the long bones and causes production of bone inside of the marrow cavity. High-protein diets may predispose large-breed dogs to panosteitis, so it is important to feed your dog a high-quality, large-breed puppy food to help prevent it. For the physical exam, your veterinarian first watches your dog as they walk to identify which legs are affected. Then, the vet performs an orthopedic examination by firmly pressing on all parts of the legs, back, and neck to check for pain reactions. Dogs with panosteitis will feel pain when the vet presses on the long bones in their leg. Your dog may tense up or even cry out and look at the spot that is painful when the veterinarian squeezes the bone. X-rays can also help diagnose panosteitis in dogs. Ordinarily, the bone marrow is darker than the outside of the bone, called the cortex. In panosteitis, the cortex bone can be seen extending into the dark marrow cavity. However, signs of pain can occur up to 10 days before the x-rays show changes, so a normal x-ray does not necessarily mean your dog does not have panosteitis. But x-rays do help rule out other causes of bone pain in dogs, such as infections, tumors, and broken bones. Treatment for Panosteitis in Dogs Treating dogs for panosteitis primarily involves nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory medications to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Restricting your dog's activity also helps. Recovery and Management of Pano in Dogs An episode of panosteitis typically lasts a few weeks and then goes away. It sometimes happens again, in different legs, weeks to months later. Fortunately, after your dog is 2 years old, pano usually stops with no lasting inflammation or pain. Your veterinarian can also prescribe a nonsteroidal, anti-inflammatory pain medication, such as carprofen , to relieve pain. How do I know if my puppy or dog has growing pains? Puppies or young adult dogs with growing pains often suddenly start limping with no known injury. Visit a vet for confirmation. How long do growing pains last in puppies and dogs? Typically, each growing pain episode lasts weeks. Once your dog reaches age 2, growing pains usually cease. Emily Fassbaugh grew up in San Diego. She attended the University of California, Davis for both her undergraduate studies in Animal.Help us make PetMD better Was this article helpful? Discover the online program that more than 57, dog owners have used to rapidly transform their dog into a well-behaved, obedient furry friend. It often happens between the ages of 6 to 18 months, though middle-aged German Shepherds can sometimes have a bout of pano. AKA: Pano" can indeed be a very difficult disease to diagnose. It is characterized by lameness that comes and goes from day to day and changes from leg to leg - and is not associated with any kind of trauma or injury. Quite literally, "pano" means "inflammation of all bones" eventhough the precise cause of the disease is unknown. I have also heard it compared to the "growing pains" that often happens in human teenagers and this seems to be a very accurate analogy. Panosteitis in the GSD can be debilitating but with proper care most dogs will make a full recovery. For some reason males are more commonly affected than females with Panosteitis. Additionally, when it does occur in females it often happens in association with the first heat cycle. Panosteitis in the GSD can be painful and can last as long as 18 months. Usually though, most pano "attacks" last from 2 to 3 weeks. On a good note, this disease is self-limiting and there are very few long-term side effects or need for further treatment once it has run its course. Panosteitis in the German Shepherd Dog Diagnosis of Panosteitis in the GSD Whenever a dog is suspected of having panosteitis individual x-rays will be taken to confirm the diagnosis in the unaffected limbs. A subtle increase in bone density is observed in the center part of the affected bones. Later on the bone will become more patchy or mottled in appearance and the outer surface of the bone may appear roughened while later on, the affected bone will still be slightly mottled, but eventually begin to return to a more normal appearance. Symptoms of Panosteitis in the GSD Panosteitis symptoms include: sudden acute pain causes lameness which can shift from one leg to another. The dog may show a reluctance to walk or exercise. Also, there can also be acute pain when the affected bone s are squeezed firmly. German Shepherds affected are with Pano are often very depressed and can go off their food. Occasionally some affected dogs will additionally have an elevated white blood cell count, a fever, or tonsillitis. Treatment of Panosteitis in the German Shepherd Since pano is often quite painful, painkillers such as Canine Buffered Aspirin or Rimadyl are usually recommended even though there is no specific treatment for the disease. The treatment can be symptomatic but the outcome is usually very good. Whenever I have a German shepherd suffering from a bout of pano I confine them to as small an area as possible, cut out all unnecessary exercise other than going out to the bathroom and eating and try to keep them as quiet as possible for several days. Supervised crating for small periods of time may be necessary as well if your GSD cannot relax or be calm on its own. There is no known cause for Pano in the German Shepherd Dog but diet is thought to play a part as well. It has not been shown to be genetic but I think that heredity can't be ruled out at this time either. Overall the long-term prognosis for a dog with panosteitis is very good. Recurrence of clinical signs and lameness is very common and possible up until the GSD is two years of age. While clinical signs of lameness and soreness may last several weeks, complete recovery from pano is typical. Panosteitis What is Panosteitis? Panosteitis is a fairly common condition of long bones in the large breeds of young dogs such as Basset Hounds and German Shepherds. The disease causes severe lameness which is usually self-limiting and leaves no permanent damage. As such, intensive investigations of the various stages of the disease are lacking and many contraindications exist as to its clinical features. The cause of panosteitis is unknown though many factors have been postulated, including infection, metabolic problems, endocrine dysfunction, allergy, parasites, hereditary factors and even auto-immune problems. Nevertheless, viral infection appears to be the most likely factor. What are the Signs of the Disease? We usually see a healthy dog especially male dogs with an acute onset of lameness but no history of trauma. The lameness is very noticable even to the degree of 'leg carrying' in some cases, and can last for a few days up to several weeks. These bouts of shifting lameness usually subside by the time the dog reaches 2 years of age although the disease has been detected in dogs up to 5 years of age. How is the Disease Detected? Acute pain is detected when the affected area of long bone is palpated. Dogs react differently to palpation. Some will cry out whilst others will wince, pull the leg away or snap at the examiner. The affected leg s are X-rayed for confirmation once panosteitis is suspected. Three phases of panosteitis can be viewed from X-rays. Early phase: Some cases show few if any signs. Blurring or accentuation of the bone structure is seen towards the ends of the bone in the medullary cavity in X-rays. A few granular densities are seen in some cases as well. Middle phase: Patchy thick looking densities are seen around the areas of main blood supply to the bone. Thickening of the outer bone covering becomes involved in approximately one third of cases. Late phase: During recovery the medulla starts to attain its normal density. However, the bone cortex remains thicker than normal if the outer bone covering has been affected. In general the lesions affect the centre of the radius, the top third of the ulna, the bottom of the humerus, the top of the tibia, and the centre and top of the femur. Hip dysplasia, hip luxation, osteochondritis dissecans, cruciate disease, fracture, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. How is Panosteitis Treated? Treatment is symptomatic and aims at relieving pain by using anti-inflammatories. Treatment is continued until the condition resolves by 'itself'.
History Where are German Shepherd Dogs from? Perhaps never in the history of any breed has such concerted effort been put into improving a dog, mostly due to the formation in of the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV, an organization in Germany devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd. Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence. During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. How big do German Shepherd Dogs get? How to Find A Responsible German Shepherd Breeder in Delaware If you are looking for a responsible German Shepherd breeder in Delaware, there are a few things you can do to ensure that you find a good one. First, ask your friends and family members if they know of any reputable breeders in the area. Chances are, someone you know has purchased a puppy from a good breeder in the past. The AKC also maintains a list of licensed breeders in each state. When you contact a breeder, be sure to ask them a few questions about their puppies. Good breeders will be happy to answer all of your questions and will even let you visit their facility so that you can see for yourself the living conditions and quality of their puppies. Visit Your Delaware German Shepherd Breeder in Person A reputable breeder will always be happy to let you visit their facility in person. This will give you the opportunity to see where the puppies are kept and how they are cared for. When visiting your breeder, ask them once again about any health concerns with their German Shepherd puppies. They should also be able to show you proof that they have performed these tests. Visiting the breeder will show you the conditions in which the puppies are kept. Reputable breeders will generally keep their dogs in clean, comfortable living spaces with plenty of room to run around and play. What to Look for When You Visit Your Delaware German Shepherd Breeder When you visit your breeder, there are several things that you should be looking for during your tour of the facility. First, take a look at how the puppies are being housed. Are they in clean and comfortable living spaces? Are they getting enough exercise and socialization? Second, ask to see the parents of the puppies. Visiting your German shepherd breeder will shed a lot of light on the potential puppies coming from that breeder. Ask the breeder for the contact information of a few people who have purchased puppies from them in the past. These people can tell you firsthand about their experience working with the breeder and whether they would recommend them to others. The references will come in handy if you have any questions about the puppies after bringing them home. If your new puppy has a health or behavioral issue, these references can put you in touch with people who might have been through the same thing and will be able to give you good advice on how to deal with it. Visiting the references puppies is also a good idea. References are a crucial step in the puppy buying process and any breeder that will not provide references should be avoided. This will give you the opportunity to ask them questions about their experience working with the breeder and whether they would recommend them to others. Ask them about the quality of the puppies, how well the breeder responded to any questions or concerns, and whether they were happy with the overall experience. If you have any doubts about a breeder, meeting past customers can help put your mind at ease. They can provide you with information that you might not be able to find anywhere else. If there are any warning signs that make you question the quality of puppies coming from a breeder, talk about them during your visit. Be prepared with questions for past customers. One of the best ways to judge a breeder is by their relationship with their veterinarian. If the breeder cannot provide you with this information, it might be a sign that they are not being responsible with the health of their dogs. Ask your breeder if you can meet their veterinarian so you can get a sense of how well they work together. If you live near the breeder, ask if you can continue using the veterinarian to treat your puppy. A good relationship between a breeder and their vet is crucial. They might also be unwilling to provide you with references or documentation of genetic testing. Another red flag is if the breeder tries to sell you a puppy before it is eight weeks old. Puppies that young are not fully weaned and are not ready to leave their mother. Buying a puppy from this breeder could result in health problems for the dog later on in life. If you suspect that the breeder is not being responsible, contact your local authorities to report them. This will let them know about any possible animal abuse or neglect and could allow future generations of dogs to be happier and healthier. One of the most important things to ask a breeder is whether the puppies have any health problems. A responsible breeder will screen their dogs for genetic conditions and will not sell a puppy to a home that does not have the resources to care for them. You should also ask to see documentation of any tests that have been performed. Be sure to have a designated area for the puppy to sleep and eat. They will be able to give you some tips on how to make your home more puppy-friendly. Make sure you have plenty of toys for them to chew on and enough room for them to run around. And LOVE. Lots of love. Puppies love love. Potty Training Your New German Shepherd Puppy One of the most important things to remember when potty training a new puppy is that accidents happen. If you live in a climate that is cold for much of the year, you may want to consider potty training your puppy indoors. This will allow you to keep an eye on them more easily and will help reduce the number of accidents. Puppies usually have to go after eating, drinking and playing. And remember — patience and consistency are key when potty training a new puppy. Just be sure to ask the right questions and look for red flags during the process. And remember — a little research now can make a world of difference for your new puppy. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article. We have answers. If they are truly superb examples of their breed, and pass all their health checks, we will breed them. The puppies are carefully whelped and raised in our home. Our entire emphasis when breeding is temperament and health. Because of the extreme popularity of the German Shepherd breed, there are now several different types being bred, for very specific purposes. We strongly believe that there is a need and a place for all of them! However, in our opinion, there is nothing better than a well-bred, quality, German Shepherd, and nothing worse, or potentially more dangerous, than a poorly bred one, or one placed in the wrong environment for the wrong reason. Please do your homework; diligently research the type of German Shepherd that best suits your needs and lifestyle, before purchasing one. A puppy purchase should be a lifetime commitment! We cannot stress enough, how important temperament is in all dogs, and especially in the German Shepherd. They must be properly socialized and handled with care to insure that they have the best possible chance to be a well-adjusted adult. However, all the training in the world cannot change the genetic makeup of any living thing. Proper breeding is crucial! We breed German Shepherds, both short and long coated, who adhere to the AKC Standards for the breed, and frequently, after careful research, will try to incorporate an outcross to a working dog that has VA rated, Schutzhund trained dogs, in its pedigree. We have personal hands on knowledge of most of the dogs in our pedigrees, and have had many of them living in our homes with us, for the past nine generations. In our opinion, there is no better way to ensure that the puppies you produce have the best possible chance of a loving stable temperament, and good health. Field About Labrador retrievers The dogs were used by fishermen to go into the water and pull the fishing nets to shore. Labradors love water, and care must be taken not to let a puppy go near a pool, or it will drown, as it does not know how to get out. The Labrador became popular in England as a gun dog and was used to retrieve game that the hunter had shot. FR Lagotto Romagnolo or a Labradoodle? What are the differences between them? They have many similarities, both externally and internally, although some differences can be seen. Purebred, coat and allergies In fact, it all starts with racial purity. A Labradoodle is a cross between a Labrador and a Poodle and in some cases crossing other breeds, such as the Lagotto Romagnolo. A Lagotto is not a crossbreed and therefore a thoroughbred. Labradoodles are therefore a collective name for all crosses with Labradors and Poodles and are not recognized. The Lagotto Romagnolo is a recognized breed. Why is this so important? In a cross between a dog that does not shed Poodle and a dog that sheds Labrador Retriever , there is even a very high chance of losing. With Labradoodles it is especially important as a breeder to focus on non-shedding in order to have a higher chance of not losing offspring. It can generally be assumed that a dog with a curly coat will not shed to a very limited extent, and a dog with short OR non-curly hair will shed. This is an important fact for anyone allergic to dog hair. A puppy of this breed is therefore descended from two other Lagottos and should shed little or nothing at all. It is most ideal for allergy sufferers. In short A Labradoodle is less suitable for allergies as they can still shed. A Lagotto Romagnolo is suitable for most allergies as this dog hardly sheds a shed. These dogs always have a curly coat. Obedience is therefore a strong point of these dogs, with a small downside that they are also active dogs. This descendant is similar to water dogs, ideal dogs for retrieving prey. And many of them were bred for the same purpose as water dogs. So they have the same gift. A poodle, on the other hand, is often thought of as a companion dog, but make no mistake about it. Poodles were also often used as circus dogs due to their obedience and ability to take on many different commands. Both ancestors provide both an active and obedient character. In short A Labradoodle and a Lagotto Romagnolo are descended from ancestors who were used as a type of retrieval dog. Both dogs have the distinction of being obedient provided they train of course and having a good deal of action. Both breeds are therefore ideal as exercise partners for the whole family. Aggression and dominance are less common, at least not when the dog has enough free space. Boredom causes an active dog to be more rebellious and aggressive. Movement The most important has already been mentioned above. Both dogs are considered healthy sporting dogs in need of some freedom. When they get a little older, it is recommended to give them free rein for the day in the garden. A walk can be a complement, but if there is no free space, a short daily walk is not enough. As both breeds are very obedient, they also like to be challenged in obedience. Training for a dog is not so much dog school, but training which can be both private training and dog school In short Do you want a dog that is as manageable as possible? Whether you choose a Labradoodle or a Lagotto Romagnolo. Health The size disadvantage of a crossbreed eg Labradoodle is that there are more genetic differences between their ancestors. The big advantage is that the risk of hereditary malformations decreases. You take all possible inherited defects from your ancestors, but the risk of one of these problems decreases. There are more issues that can be included, but they come out less often. With the exception of hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and cerebral abnormality a disease of the brain , no problems are included in the list of possible hereditary defects. We also limit the risk of any of the above issues by verifying parents. In short A Labradoodle therefore has a longer list of possible health problems, only the probability of a problem being lower in percentage. Lagottos, on the other hand, have a very limited list of known health issues. Both varieties are therefore considered healthy. Our assets.

Well, there are lots of benefits, first of all, you get to know about the basic training and a lot more things about a Golden Retriever from scratch. Reading books for some people is boring but it gives a lot of benefits for you and your pet. I always prefer reading books before I get into that field or matter! Books are still a great way to get knowledge and gain expertise! I bought this book after reading a couple more from the list. I felt like the older books provided a solid foundation for understanding the world of retriever training. The photos in this book are stunning and informational. I felt like the progression in the book is intuitive. It is very easy to see the rationale behind the program. Dokken mentions certain things that you will teach your dog at different ages. It is much better to simply teach the skills and commands and move on only when your dog has figured out the previous skill. Every dog advances at their own speed. There is not a schedule for training retrievers. I recognize that it is old. I mean, it is the book that my grandfather used to train his Labrador Retrievers. It was last updated in .It is a timeless book with a great history of field trials in the U. If you are new to the AKC tests and trials, you should read this book to understand these fun events. For me, I love this book for both sentimental and practical reasons. If you decide to buy this particular book, I think you will also benefit from a newer program like Robert Milner, Retriever Training for the Duck Hunter There are lots of professional trainers that still rely on what they learned from this classic. It is another older book. There are lots of professional trainers today that got their start in these pages. Researchers have learned a lot in the last 10 years about training dogs through scientifically-based principles. Even with these advances, trainers continue to base their programs on these traditional approaches. This book, even though it is a little old, will help you get a finished retriever from beginning to the end. The one knock against this book, however, is that the diagrams of the drills were a little more specific. At the end of each chapter, Milner addresses how to cure some of the bad habits that your dog may develop along the way. What if the pup eats the bird? What if the pup runs away from me with a bumper? I think it is a good idea to read this book—even if you decide to follow a more modern program to incorporate what researchers have learned over the last 10 years. If you follow this book, you will end up with a good base for hunt tests or field trials. Children can understand the pictures. Timetables get newbies in trouble because they become overly concerned with steadiness and rather than focusing on desire and enthusiasm for the retrieve. If you are not worried about the history of retriever training and you only want to buy one book, this is a great option to get you through your first year. Some new trainers might be hesitant to train with an e-collar. Loveland provides an approach that does not rely on e-collars and this is great depending on your preference. I found it to be a very informative book. Spencer broke down drills very well. In addition to being an accomplished trainer, Spencer is a good writer. That really helps when ready something that is so instruction-based. His writing style makes learning about retriever training fun. When I have talked to other trainers that have used this book they feel like one of the benefits is the intuitive nature of the program and progression. Spencer does a great job of educating the reader not only what to do, but why you should do it. The Dahls have a strong focus on the front half of training. If you are new to the game, then this is what you need to spend your time mastering with your dog. The methods are typically in the positive reinforcement approaches to training. I am still researching the difference between positive and aversive training methods. If you are interested in what I have learned so far, here is an article on clicker training its benefits. One of the things that I like about this approach is its focus on shorter training sessions. Too many people think that training a retriever takes too long. If you are a responsible dog owner, then you have time to train a retriever. I only say that because every responsible retriever owner should already be spending at least some time outside with their pup. Lots of short lessons will go farther with your dog than fewer long sessions. Most of the critics that I have talked with are critical of Wolters approach to discipline. Many people feel like his approach is too harsh. I say that, even though I have already praised other books written during the same time period—or even before. Another critic of Wolters pointed out that he was a marketing genius… not a dog trainer. You can find his books in almost any bookstore while Training Your Retriever and Retriever Training for the Duck Hunter are both out of print. I wish it was the other way around. Considering the technological break-throughs that we have experienced in the last several decades, you might wondering why you should purchase a book in the first place. Well, first, some of you may be like me. I like having a book to throw in my truck. Remember, I am still a rookie trying to figure out how to get a dog titled for the first time. I am going to get it. Sooner rather than later. Another reason I like having books is the ability to write in the margins and place sticky notes when I learn something new. Conclusion on the Best Retriever Training Books Every trainer is just as different as every retriever. I think each approach to training dogs needs to be considered in the light of your personality as well as the needs of your dog. This list is not an all-inclusive list of retriever training books, but I think these books are the best place to start if you are new to the retriever training world. Question of the Day Are there retriever training books that you like that I did not include on my list? Please, leave me a comment below and let me know what your favorite retriever training book is and why.
