Boston Boxer Highlights Boston Boxers are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Boston Terrier or Boxer parents. The main colors of Boston Boxers are black, brown, fawn, blue, and white. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors, like in a pied or brindle pattern. Boston Boxers are known to be a good choice for families with children. Always supervise playtime. The Boston Boxer is a highly energetic mixed breed. If left alone for too long or without any sort of stimulation, this energy can manifest in unwanted destructive behaviors. Make sure your dog gets at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. When it comes to other pets, Boston Boxers can get along with other animals if they are introduced slowly and calmly, and early socialization will help this go smoothly. Boston Boxer History The Boston Boxer mixed dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders started intentionally mixing Boston Terriers and Boxers in the late s, likely in North America. Breeders wanted to mix the two parent breeds to keep the friendly and energetic spirit of the Boxer but in a smaller, Boston Terrier size. They continued to create Boston Boxers as demand for the mixed breed pups climbed. Even though the Boston Boxer got their start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide the Boston Boxer is the dog for you. Be sure to check your local shelters, look up Boston Boxer or Miniature Boxer rescues, or check with breed-specific Boxer or Boston Terrier rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breed dogs and find homes for them. Boston Boxer Size Since the Boston Boxer is a relatively new mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That said, as a mix between Boston Terrier and Boxer parents, you can expect your Boston Boxer to be on the small-to-medium size. Most weigh in at 22 to 55 pounds and range in height from 15 to 23 inches from the shoulder. However, many can be larger or smaller than average. The Mini Boxer can be somewhat hesitant around strangers, which is why it is very important to socialize your Boston Boxer as early as possible to make sure they are people-friendly. These dogs are prone to attaching to one particular family member, and they can become somewhat protective of them. Even with their protective tendencies, most Boston Boxer enthusiasts say their dogs are complete goofballs. The Boston Boxer is also a highly energetic mixed breed, so they are best-suited with people who can keep up with the pace. Some of the more common health problems Boston Boxer suffer from include: heart murmurs. Lifespan Sociability Boston Boxer dogs are very popular, resulting in many breeders. We recommend searching for as many as possible to find the perfect puppy before you make your decision. Always ask a breeder to show you the facilities before making any payment. In many cases, you can find a breeder that is willing to sell you a puppy at a reduced cost, but we must caution against prices that are too good to be true, as unscrupulous breeders often create these puppies in unsafe environments known as puppy mills. The best way to fight puppy mills is not to buy their puppies. You can always ask your local shelter if they have a Boxer mix that resembles the Boston Boxer. They are athletic and can run fast and jump quite high and will maintain a fast pace for extended play sessions before tiring. They quickly become attached and protective of their owners and are wary of strangers who might cause them to become aggressive and bark. However, they generally get along with other household pets and small yard animals like bunnies and squirrels. Boston Boxers are sensitive to their environment and prefer a set, predictable schedule, and they can be stubborn if you change things up too quickly. They are very intelligent and easy to train, as long as they think they are in charge. They love the company and will remain at your side most of the day. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are very friendly, energetic, and playful. They get along well with pets including, cats and other dogs. They like to play with children and will provide each other with unlimited amounts of entertainment. Boston Boxers are intelligent enough to follow orders and behave and will even learn tricks and guard the house while you are away. They will require at least one family member to take them out for long walks, though, and these are high maintenance in the exercise department, requiring at least one hour of running and jumping each day. If you live in the city, it can be challenging to find enough room, and you will likely require access to a park or trail. They are even more friendly if you socialize them early and get them used to other animals, but even so, this breed rarely gets aggressive toward another animal. This food should be high-quality without any harmful chemicals or preservatives. High-quality dog food will contain meat, vegetables, grains, and fruits, according to the American Kennel Club. You can expect to take your Boston Boxer for a long walk every day, and on some days, you may need a second walk. You can expect to walk at least eight miles a week spread out over about an hour a day, every day, for the next several years when purchasing a Boston Boxer. In most cases, you will only require patience and a bunch of treats to have your Boston Boxer impressing your friends. To train your pet, simply stand in front of them with a treat ready. Boston Boxers are smart and will know you have it. When they figure it out and sit, give them a treat. Stand them back up and repeat. After several tries, your Boston Boxer will catch on and quickly sit on command. Using the above system, you can teach your dog plenty of tricks, like shaking hands, fetch, rollover, and plenty of others. You can even teach them more complex tricks like retrieving the newspaper with a little practice. They only require occasional brushing and trimming of their nails. But there are a few problems associated with them that you should know about before you make a purchase. Minor Conditions. Light brown, black and brown, white and cream, black, brown and white Suitable for: Active families, families with children Temperament: friendly, alert, affectionate, loving, intelligent, loyal, social, protective Although not recognized by major kennel club registries, these non-aggressive dogs make excellent companions for adults and children alike. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. This characteristic makes them quite similar to other dogs. Miniature Boxers are also known for their sociability and desire to be around others as they dislike being alone. Their lifespan can be anywhere from years with the possibility of certain health conditions developing during the course of their life. Overall, Miniature Boxers can be trained to be excellent household pets. They are best described as being intelligent, friendly, affectionate, alert, loving, playful, gentle, loyal, protective, and social. Miniature boxers are seen as an excellent choice for a family pet because of their friendly and protective nature. Keep in mind that Miniature Boxers can become verbal and aggressive when they meet a stranger and associate it with a sense danger to their human family. However, once they are assured that there is no danger, they will go back to their usual behavior. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They can prove to be a great addition to the household for people from all walks of life including active families, novice dog owners, singles, couples, and active retirees. For kids, having a Miniature Boxer will give them the opportunity to learn practical life lessons about responsibility, patience, and compassion. These high-energy dogs have no issues getting along with other dogs so long as they are properly trained and socialized. The training process begins in the Miniature Boxers first few years of life so by the time they are a bit grown, they will have no issues interacting with others and being social. Furthermore, Miniature Boxers that have been trained get along well with family cats and other animals. This is a great perk because if you have more than one pet in your house, you will not have to worry about your Miniature Boxer getting into a fight or injuring the other ones. Are affected by skin infections and other health issues. Spend a lot of time indoors under artificial light. Boston Boxers Are Smart Boston Boxers display an above-average intelligence, especially regarding instinctive intelligence. In a study [1] conducted on breeds, Stanly Coren [2] analyzed three types of dog intelligence: Instinctive intelligence Adaptive intelligence Working and obedience intelligence The results placed Boston Terriers in 54th place and Boxers in 48th place. This means the mix between them is somewhere in between. They are family oriented and show high levels of tolerance for the unpredictable behavior of children. Their patient and loving nature also make them good around children. Still, dogs should generally not be left alone with children. Supervision is essential to preventing accidents. They do also have a predisposition for aggressive behavior. Boston Boxers are somewhat adaptable, but they like a daily schedule. This involves eating and exercising at specific hours. When their routine or environment changes, Boston Boxer Terriers become stressed. But, they adapt to new conditions fairly fast. It will end up stressed and sad. They need constant mental stimulation as their parent breeds evolved with a purpose. Even though the Boston Boxer is bred for companionship, they like to solve puzzles and play with mentally stimulating toys. They also love learning new tricks and helping out. To keep them happy, try involving them in your daily activities and teach them how to help. Boxer Bostons get bored easily and become frustrated if they are not engaged. If this happens, they end up developing behavioral issues, such as barking. While hunting, both Boston Terriers and Boxers were taught to be aggressive. Luckily, they were trained for hunting aggression, not killing aggression. In , researchers analyzed the aggressive behavior related to fear in German Shepherds and Boxers [3]. They concluded that both breeds display the same levels of fear-aggressive behavior when they sense a threat. Boston Terriers were bred for pit fights, which made the part of their brain responsible for aggression more evolved. A recent study [4] suggests that the purpose of a dog influences how their brain evolves. They then pass these traits to their offspring. Boxer Bostons inherit a predisposition for aggressive behavior from both parents. This can be altered with training and socialization. This mixed breed has a longer history but the breeding was unintentional before .The time of its first occurrence is unknown. Their parents are the English Terrier and the English Bulldog. The initial purpose of Boston terriers was to take part in pit fights. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in .In , it took first place. Boxer Origin The Boxer dog was initially bred in Germany in the late eighteen hundreds. The initial purpose of Boxers was bull baiting and controlling cattle. During World War 1, Boxers were also used by the military: Guard dogs.

Rated 5 out of 5 stars By Dlfly on Jul 19, Great puppy food Started our golden puppy on a name brand puppy food that he was on from the breeder. Puppy within a couple of weeks started having loose stools to explosive diarrhea when we brought him home. After visit to vets and antibiotics vet recommended we switched to this food slowly with a bland diet. Doing fabulous on this food and he is growing appropriately. Kibbles are a great size. Using the food also as training treats. Chewy was awesome to work with to get his previous full bag of food donated to a no kill shelter. Only food we recommend to our buyers and also to others. They love this kibble so much, they are growing big and strong. As a dog family, we are very Impressed with Royal Canin as a brand; their older sister is on a Prescription Diet with Royal Canin as well so we have switched all of our food over to them. Cannot recommend them enough! I have always fed our Dogs Royal Canin and they did great. Had a German Shepherd that lived to almost 15 years old which I attribute to good food, exercise and love. Our puppy is thriving now. She eats every single feeding, no more diarrhea and she is growing well. My puppy loves it and prefers it over the Purina Pro Plan puppy lamb that his breeder started him on, I've been making the transition and he really likes it. Royal Canin always smells fresh and like real food when you open the bag! A good sign! I have a new puppy and she was having soft stools on the food the breeder was using. I switched her to this and fixed the problem. It took me forever to pick a food, but happy I picked this one. I use it for training treats also. How could I not give this puppy food 5 stars? Breeder started our puppy on this food and then gave us the other option of Purina Pro Plan. My thought was to gradually switch to the Purina based on the cost difference. I tried but even with mixing half and half, we had diarrhea all over in a puppy that was already housebroken. I donated the huge bag of Purina and switched back to Royal Canin and the problem was resolved. Lesson learned and the extra cost is totally worth it. Breathing issues are a problem for both parents, so the Frenchbo might also have breathing issues. Your vet will also perform a laryngoscopy checking the larynx with an endoscope and a tracheoscopy examining the larynx and trachea with a fiber-optic scope. Both the Boston Terrier and French Bulldog are susceptible to heat and have trouble with anesthesia, and therefore the vet will need to be aware of this when working with the Frenchbo. Male vs Female The Frenchbo is a small dog that is usually 14 to 16 inches in height and weighs 15 to 25 pounds. The female Frenchbo will typically be smaller than the male and is closer to the lower end of the height and weight scale and the male on the higher end. Spaying and neutering your Frenchbo will help prevent future health issues and stop any aggressive behavior, and your dog might be less likely to wander off. Many believe that another difference between males and females is their temperament. You can also attend dog shows and talk to national and local dog clubs and post your message on social media to find as much help as possible. The Frenchbo will keep you company on walks in the park and cuddle with you on your lap while you sit in your favorite chair. Bringing one of these hybrids home will provide you and your family with a smart and loving companion. Maintenance Introducing the Frenchton puppies for sale at Happytail Puppies. These adorable and energetic dogs are a cross between a French Bulldog and a Boston Terrier. Frenchtons are the result of crossing the Boston Terrier with the French Bulldog. Boston Terriers were named for their home city of Boston. They originated around when the English Terrier-owning Robert C. Hooper purchased a Bulldog from Edward Burnett. The dogs had a litter, and their offspring were interbred with French Bulldogs, which is what led to the Boston Terrier. The breed was larger and heavier in its early days, weighing up to 44 pounds. The breed had become very popular in Boston by .They were admitted into the American Kennel Club in .Boston Terriers became the first non-sporting breed to be bred in the United States. The French Bulldog is a descendant of the ancient Molossian, which gave rise to the Mastiffs and later the Bulldogs. The Frenchie's Bulldog ancestor was originally bred for bull-baiting and then later for other blood sports. Once Europe made blood sports illegal, the English Bulldog was reduced in size by being crossed with small Terriers. The smallest of the English Bulldog, too small for English preferences, became in vogue to both high- and low-brow people. These popular pups soon made their way west to the United States and by , they were accepted as a companion breed by the American Kennel Club. Major health concerns to be aware of: Intervertebral Disc Disease Minor health concerns to be aware of: Patellar Luxation Atopic Dermatitis Brachycephalic Syndrome Frenchtons are not known to shed much, and taking care of their coats is easy. They should be brushed weekly with short bristle brushes that can effectively remove loose hair from the short, fine coat. They should only be bathed as necessary because frequent bathing can irritate the skin. A warm, wet cloth can be an easier tool to bathe your Frenchton than a traditional bath. Use the cloth to wipe folds and wrinkles, and take care to dry those areas thoroughly afterwards. Check and clean ears regularly, trim nails as necessary, and brush teeth a few times a week to freshen breath and prevent infection. Should a French Bulldog Mix take after their Frenchie parent, they will be a small companion breed that bonds closely with their families. They tend to have an energetic, playful personality and love nothing more than being with their favorite humans. French Bulldogs tend to be friendly, playful, and affectionate dogs that get along with just about everyone. They tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets. They will even warm up quickly to strangers as long as they have been properly socialized. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect the same from a French Bulldog Mix. You can also meet the mother in person to see what her temperament is like and the behavior she is modeling for the puppies. The breeder should have started some training and socialization, but it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. Frenchies are highly adaptable dogs. They do well in apartments as well as larger homes. However, as a brachycephalic breed, they are extra sensitive to heat and also sensitive to the cold. They also do not like being left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar, then you can expect a Frenchie Mix to also be a highly adaptable dog. The other parent will introduce their own traits and some potential quirks, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. They could inherit none of the conditions common to their parent breeds, or they could inherit some or all of them. They can also be prone to allergies, have sensitive skin, and also a sensitive stomach. Good breeding practices will make a huge difference. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. Although French Bulldogs can sometimes be stubborn, they are eager to please and tend to be easy to train. As long as training is consistent and focused on positive praise and reward, they can be a good fit for owners of all experience levels. If the other parent breed is also easy to train, then you can expect a French Bulldog Mix to be highly trainable as well. Regardless of owner experience, there are many benefits of puppy training classes. A mixed-breed dog can inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or a coat that is a mix of both. You will also need to clean their facial wrinkles. Weekly ear checks with cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, a Frenchie Mix is more prone to developing dental diseases later in life. This makes good, consistent dental care for dogs even more important for them. Daily brushing with a dog-friendly toothpaste or using an enzyme toothpaste paired with cleanings at the vet when needed is ideal. Frenchies are known couch potato dogs that are happy to lay back, relax, and cuddle with you. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for this affectionate little dog. Even though they like to relax, they also like to play and will be energetic when they do. They can also be athletic and compete in dog sports. As a brachycephalic breed, you do need to be careful of overexertion and overheating. But, there are plenty of ways to safely exercise flat-faced dogs to make sure your French Bulldog Mix gets enough exercise. If the other parent breed is also a low-energy breed, then you can expect something similar from a Frenchie Mix. If the other parent breed requires more activity, then you will need to be prepared for the potential of a higher energy dog. Fully-grown Frenchies usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother, so make sure you ask the breeder about them. This can give you some idea of what size to expect in a fully-grown French Bulldog Mix. French Bulldogs generally live for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar average life span in a French Bulldog Mix. Featured French Bulldog Mix Article. Life Span Did You Know? The Frenchton, also sometimes referred to as a Faux French Bulldog, Frenchbo, or a Boston Frenchie, is a designer dog breed that was developed in the s. It is a mix between a French Bulldog and a Boston Terrier. As a mixed dog breed, the Frenchton can exhibit any combination of characteristics from the parent breeds. Usually, a Frenchton has a sweet personality with the build of a French Bulldog and the athletic nature of a Boston Terrier. This designer dog breed is loyal, friendly, and intelligent. Although small, they are energetic and very playful. They are a companion breed through and through, so they love spending time with their humans and crave attention. They love to cuddle! The Frenchton also gets along well with children, which makes them a great fit for families. Older children are usually a better fit for the Frenchton. Due to their small stature, they can be injured easily by accidental falls or rough play that can occur with younger children. They also get along with other pets, but may not be as open or friendly to other dogs. Socialization early and often can help your Frenchton feel more comfortable when they come into contact with other dogs. They also make alert watchdogs. Frenchtons are moderately adaptable. Although they have an energetic and playful nature, they also tend to be laid-back. This makes them a good fit for apartments as well as larger homes. They are also true companions and crave attention, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. As long as they get enough exercise and attention, they will be happy. Because they are small, snub-nosed dogs, they are very sensitive to heat. Their small stature and short coat also make them susceptible to cold. The Frenchton does best in moderate climates. You can get some durable winter gear for your dog to help them better handle the cold. In hotter weather, make sure they have plenty of water available, keep their exposure to heat minimal, and the air conditioner on a comfortable setting. This is a generally healthy dog breed. Because the Frenchton is a brachycephalic dog, meaning they have a small head and snub-nose, they can be prone to developing respiratory disorders, ailments affecting the eyes, and digestive concerns. They also tend to be sensitive to extreme temperatures and are especially sensitive to heat. Your Frenchton will likely snort, grunt, and be prone to gas — these are all normal occurrences. It could be a sign they are getting sick, developing allergies, or are in need of a change in diet. The Frenchton can be a good fit for a first-time dog owner. They are an intelligent dog breed that is eager to please. They can have an independent and slightly stubborn streak, so obedience classes might be a good idea for novice dog owners. This ensures training sessions are effective, stay positive, and strengthen the bond with your dog. The Frenchton has a short coat with fine hair. Common coat colors are black, black and white, brindle, cream, golden, and brown. Although they are not considered hypoallergenic, their coat does not shed much, so their grooming needs are minimal in that respect. Brushing once or twice a week will keep your pup comfortable and their coat healthy. They will also require the occasional bath, but usually only as needed. Daily brushing is ideal to keep tartar buildup at bay and to reduce the risk of tooth decay or other dental issues. This dog breed has a moderate activity level. Because they are smaller and are snub-nosed, they tend to get tired quickly and can overexert themselves. Daily walks and the occasional trip to the dog park or playtime indoors will give the Frenchton plenty of exercise. A Frenchton usually stands 14 to 16 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between 15 and 25 pounds. This designer dog breed generally lives for 12 to 15 years. Frenchton puppy litters usually average puppies. Frenchton Puppies for Sale.

Why Do Dogs Wink? By Tracey L. Kelley After loving 19 cats, 11 dogs, and a canary, Tracey married someone allergic to all those creatures. Thankfully, she receives oodles of animal goodness sharing stories on Daily Paws! When not traveling, teaching yoga, or doing voiceover projects, she's an editorial strategist and developer for print, digital, and multimedia platforms. At least, that's what it looks like. Is this for real? After all, studies show dogs are in-tune with their families , picking up on all sorts of aspects of our own behavior and watching for our cues. So why do dogs wink? She says winking is often an intentional behavior with various meanings—but there could be some health reasons behind it, too. Depending on the situation, you can interpret dog winking in many ways. Your pooch may also just be checking in with you from across the couch with her playful wink—a "Hey, how you doin'? If you're trying to decipher what it means when a dog winks at you, take note of her body language , too. If her tail is high and wagging and she has erect ears, this shows interest or is a request for attention similar to when she paws at you. Canines who crouch, roll on their backs, or slip their tail between their legs may be communicating they're submissive. They frequently demonstrate appeasement gestures like these to indicate they mean no harm. Winking, blinking, play bowing, lip licking, and lowering their head and ears are additional ways pups let you and other dogs know they're eager to get along. Frequent winking, especially with the same eye, can be a sign of something wrong. Dogs may be apt to close an eye repeatedly if they're experiencing pain, light sensitivity, or discomfort. And, just like humans, dogs wink or blink when they come in contact with an irritant such as dust, dirt, or hair. Other reasons why dogs wink are due to symptoms of an eye infection. Another cause of frequent winking and blinking is entropion , a genetic eye condition that affects brachycephalic breeds with heavy brows, plump faces, and short noses. Some of the largest dog breeds develop entropion too. As the ligaments of the outer corners of their eyes droop, this causes the eyelids to slack inward. The good news is this condition is often successfully corrected with surgery. But overall, winking is a normal and benign behavior commonly seen in dogs. If yours is prone to the occasional wink, it won't take much to determine what she's trying to communicate, and you may even have fun winking back or teaching her to wink on cue. Training a Dog to Wink As long as there aren't any health issues, Conrad says winking is a trick you can teach your dog. And just like any other positive reinforcement training , using a treat to reward the action helps her learn. When asking for a wink, a verbal command should be used and can be accompanied by a nonverbal action like the wink itself, Conrad says. Here's how it might work: With your pup sitting in front of you, touch one side of their muzzle by their whiskers. This might prompt an automatic winking response. If so, give your dog a treat. To include a verbal cue such as "wink," say it along with the touch and, when she winks again, provide another treat. With consistent repetition, you should be able to remove the touch completely and simply speak the cue to get a cute wink. Was this page helpful? This dog breed can adapt to a wide range of living situations due to their small size. As a matter of fact, they have trouble dealing with any kind of alone time. As such, the Toy Poodle is an excellent companion animal for people who love a little company. There are a few health conditions that Toy Poodles are more susceptible to than other dog breeds. With regular visits to the veterinarian, many of these potential health concerns can be comfortably managed. Owners typically have an easy time during obedience training with Toy Poodles. Their intelligence often hastens the training process. However, they can present destructive tendencies when left to their own devices for too long. Toy Poodles have famously low-shedding coats. As a small dog breed, they are more prone to developing dental disease so good dental care is important. Poodles are an active breed in general, and Toy Poodles in specific are just as active. He loves to play with his spring pole and has been a pleasure to train. Krajewski DA KillDozer aka Dozer relaxing—he walks great on a leash, sit, lay, roll over, and stay at 12 weeks old. He is the first dog I have ever had, and I am definitely impressed with his progress. I am waiting till he gets a little older, but I think he has a great temperament, and hopefully he will be able to become a therapy dog. I think that would not only be fun for him, but would also paint a very positive picture of this breed and the things they can accomplish. He has a very laid-back personality. Very friendly with other dogs. Loves people, loves the water. Just started obedience training. Before any formal training he easily learned the basics sit, stay, lie down ,shake, etc. Although he is very large, he is a very good inside dog. In the six months that I have had him, he only has had one accident in the house. He is CKC registered. He was also crate trained in a matter of days. He is exercised daily. Extremely loyal to me and loving with anyone he meets. His mostly brindle markings I have been told and researched to be on the rare side. She thinks she is a lap dog. I've never been a big "dog person" until we got her. I never imagined myself loving a dog as much as I love her; I look at her as if she was my own child.Everyone tells me she is the best-looking dog they have ever seen, and I agree! This is what he thinks he was put on this earth to do. His registered name is "The Game's Tankus Maximus. He weighs pounds and lives with a female mixed breed that is 45 pounds lighter than he is. She is the alpha dog. I guess he just doesn't know he is bigger than she is. He was 18 months old when this picture was taken. I took this picture of him when we took him out on the Puget Sound on a boat. We didn't expect him to get so excited about the water; he leaned very far over the edge of the boat, so to be safe we put a flotation device on him since he is not a very strong swimmer. He is a very sweet and well-behaved dog, although he can get overly excited in some situations. He has a lot of energy. Hanah the white American Bulldog at 5 years old weighing pounds.
