The puppies are picked up at 8 weeks old and go to their forever family to be trained and live with you for life. Once puppies are weaned the female is then returned to their Guardian family. We feel this will allow for the best care of the girls as they will be one on one with their forever families right from the get go instead of being replaced once they are retired from breeding. A Free puppy adopted through our breeder program is just that, a free lab retriever. In addition, there is compensation for travel to us to return her along with us paying for spaying after she has had her litters. On occasion we run into someone objecting to this program and they recommend that people visit their local shelter to adopt a puppy for free. These puppies need rehoming and we would want to get them into a home as much as the next person. The need for breeding however is still there because not all free shelter dogs have the intelligence to act as a service dog. Something as simple as a shelter dog not being screened for a genetic heart or eye issue may result in a lot of wasted training. If a dog lives for 10 to 12 years, and the shelter dog is 5 years old , training takes a year at least for suitable candidates, then the service can only work until about 8 to 10 years old until they begin to slow down. So, instead of the dog helping their handler for 8 or 9 years, all that training is put in to the dog for just a couple years. The Lab was a working dog used during hunting pursuits and the hunting fraternity heavily favored the Black Labrador over all other colors. And so red labs were relatively uncommon. But in a reversal of the trend today, in the early days of the breed the more common shades of yellow that existed were dark yellow to fox red. The lighter shades of yellow and cream that we think of as normal today, were actually quite rare. In fact, the first ever registered yellow was a dark golden color. However, through the mid to late s, lighter shades of yellow and cream became more fashionable and breeders sought to selectively breed for these colors. This is mostly my opinion and not concrete fact, but the two theories I have on why the lighter colors of Yellow Labradors became more common are: Firstly, during the early years of the breed the darker yellows and reds were more common. So when a pale cream or very light yellow was born, it seemed more exotic, rarer and hence more desirable. So breeders started to selectively breed for these colors and hence less and less reds were born. Secondly, since the middle s, a famous brand of British toilet paper, Andrex has used a pale Yellow Labrador in their television adverts. Their adverts went on to be shown in over countries for over 35 years. Most colors centered on a cream to light golden color. The dark yellows and reds fell out of fashion. But in the last 10 or 15 years, the range of available shades in the Yellow Labrador have once again widened. They stood out among the crowd and so they were more desired. This caused breeders to try to match the demand and selectively breed for lighter colors. Due to a lack of popularity of the dark red coat colors, it all but disappeared. But this new-found rarity in turn made the darker red Labs more desirable. So now there are many breeders who are selectively breeding to try to obtain litters of reds to meet the demand of people who want the rarer color. Things have turned full circle. Controversy Around The Red And Darker Yellow Shades Being uncommon in comparison to the black, paler yellow and chocolate shades does make some people question the red Labradors pedigree. They question whether in fact they are a pure bred Labrador or not? However, unlike the so-called Silver Labrador Retriever that is surrounded by accusations of outcrossing Labradors with Weimaraners to introduce the diluted coat color to the breed, no such controversy surrounds the darker colors of Yellow and Red Labradors. They are a genuine, pure bred Labrador, with a history going back to the earliest days of the breed. Another controversy is the fact that Fox Red Labrador breeders charge a far higher price than breeders do for the more traditional colors of the breed. They advertise their dogs as being a rare breed and charge a premium. There is some truth in this, but this controversy also follows many other breeds and colors of dogs. Are Breeders of Reds Irresponsible? There is some evidence to support this in a very few small cases, but there are some highly responsible breeders too and I think the good do outnumber the bad. Many people have asked if different colored Labs have different temperaments. Is the Fox Red Lab temperament different from the other Lab colors? In our experience, no a Fox Red lab has the same loving, friendly temperament as black, yellow, and chocolate Labs. It's not that your dog dislikes Nose Butter we hope not , they DO dislike being held tightly and restrained. Bully and flat-faced breeds already have compromised breathing systems due to their adorable flat faces. If held tightly they will struggle to protect their breathing. Toy breeds know they are small and will often put up an unbelievable tussle to get away. Dogs are often triggered by being held tightly or controlled. This may come from puppy play, when they wrestle and play-fight. It's not fun for dogs or us to have siblings pile on and make us feel helpless. I'm looking at my three sisters. Glennda even checked up on us the following weeks to make sure Franklin was making a good transition. We were so glad that he was already crate trained and potty trained! Tips for Avoiding Online Labrador puppy Scams Ask for multiple pictures of the pet, including poses with specific items a recent newspaper, a tennis ball, etc. Ask for a phone number for the person selling the puppy and a veterinary clinic the pet has been to. If they do give the phone numbers, call and ask questions. If the seller says they are in a particular state but asks you to send money elsewhere, especially another country, avoid it. If the person is claiming to be a breeder, ask for breeder registration information. Never pay in cash via Zelle, Cashapp, money order or Western Union. Pet insurance is NOT required for a pet to be shipped or to travel. Do research to get a sense of what a fair price is for the breed you are interested in adopting. Think twice if they are selling a purebred puppy for free or at a very low price for the breed. It should be a red flag if e-mail communications have broken English or very poor grammar. Adopting a new Labrador puppy is an exciting time. Your best bet is to find an ethical breeder or a reputable local rescue group or shelter. For example, you can find cream shadings in the merle Labradoodle, parti Labradoodle, or the phantom Labradoodle. They can have both dark and light noses, various eye shades, and even light toenails. However, most cream Labradoodles have fairly pinkish skin under their bright coats. In fact, the possibilities for this shade are so great that you will hardly struggle to find two same dogs in this coat color. Red Labradoodle This shade looks quite similar to the mahogany hair color in humans. Red Labradoodles are relatively rare, as the shade is inherited via recessive genes. Also, neither Poodles nor Labrador Retrievers come in red — not if the AKC acknowledges them as there are red Poodle varieties out there. Because of this, they can be quite challenging to find. While the exact fur shade is more of a very dark golden, breeders prefer calling these dogs red as they are easily distinguished from other colors. Red Labradoodles are usually bred as the offspring of a dark-colored Poodle with a cream or tan Labrador. Black Labradoodle Another standard color for Labradoodles, the black shade is typically the result of crossbreeding a black Poodle and a chocolate Labrador. Unlike Goldendoodles, Labradoodles often come in pure black color. This is because both the Poodle and the Labrador can come in dark shades, unlike the Golden Retriever that is lighter in color. Unless both parents are black or at least chocolate, it can be difficult to breed a black Labradoodle. In fact, even if both the Poodle and the Labrador are black, you might get chocolate puppies. All of this can make black fur color somewhat unpredictable. Typically, black Labradoodles come in a solid black color. This includes their paws, noses, eyes, paw pads, and all other physical attributes. There are several different shades these dogs can come in, so you can find Doodles in milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or even dark mahogany. This type of coat is usually described as a dark, red shade with a dull pecan color. Chocolate Labradoodles often have two shades mixed into one. This is because dark tones are recessive, so the second color, which is usually lighter, tends to mask these genes. You can even find multi-colored chocolate Labradoodles. Blue Labradoodle Blue, or silver Labradoodles, have a unique coat shade that is rarely found as a solid color. In fact, this hair tone is usually located in multi-colored Doodles, such as the sable, parti, or merle Labradoodles. If you have a hard time imagining this color, think of it as a washed-out black. Finding a Labradoodle that is entirely blue is almost impossible, despite this being a standard Poodle color. These dogs have two coat colors, and one of them has to be pure white. The other color can be of any shade that Labradoodles come in, but brown and apricot are the most common ones. They can also come in blue, while black is rare. The recessive gene found in Poodles is responsible for this pattern. To get a parti Labradoodle, you should breed two Doodles with this recessive gene, then hope their offspring will inherit it. If there is just one dominant gene in any of the parents, it can easily mess everything up. Because of this, parti Labradoodles tend to be quite expensive. Most breeders will conduct DNA testing to ensure a pup would have the parti patterns. As this color combination is fairly rare, there are virtually no two parti Labradoodles with the same markings. Tuxedo Labradoodle A tuxedo Labradoodle — or a black and white Labradoodle — is becoming more and more popular in recent years. These dogs have distinct features, such as a white tummy and legs, while the rest of the body is black. As the markings resemble a tuxedo, this is how this variation got its name. However, not all black and white Labradoodles are considered Tuxedo. Some Labradoodles can also have white markings on their chests, muzzle, and top of their heads. This means they are not Tuxedo. This is yet another pattern that is quite tricky to breed. To get a black and white Labradoodle, a breeder needs to crossbreed a parti Poodle with a white Labrador Retriever. This makes these Labradoodles quite rare. Sable Labradoodle Chances are this is the most unique color pattern in a Labradoodle — especially since the sable pattern is tough to predict in Labradoodle puppies. These dogs are entirely black during puppyhood. Then, as they grow older, most parts of their coat lighten, but some, such as the muzzle and their ear tips, remain black. Even if a sable Labradoodle ends up being light cream when adults, some parts of their body will remain pitch black. They are quite rare when breeding two Labradoodles, as at least one has to have a strong merle gene. The merle Labradoodle is quite different from the parti Labradoodle in that a dominant gene determines the merle pattern. This means that only one parent has to have it for it to show. However, there are many health issues related to the merle gene. Because of this, you should never breed two merle Labradoodles, as their offspring can have problems with their bone structure, be visually or hearing impaired, and develop other similar health issues. Grey Labradoodle These Labradoodles resemble their Poodle parents the most. In fact, at first glance, they look just like a medium or large-sized silver Poodle. This is yet another problematic coat type to predict in puppies since they are born looking like a chocolate Doodle. The best way to know if the puppy will grow into a grey adult is to look at his skin underneath the brown coat. If their skin is light, chances are their coat color will fade. At the same time, this is yet another shade that is usually seen in Aussiedoodles, so these two hybrid breeds can end up mixed. Phantom Labradoodle Finally, we get to the main color combination of this article — the phantom Labradoodle! This is an exceptionally rare color for a Labradoodle because for a Labradoodle to be considered a phantom, it has to have distinct colors in specific areas of its body. However, you can also find them in other colors, such as blue or a chocolate phantom. The typical color combination for a phantom Labradoodle is black and brown. However, you can find them in quite a few other colors, such as brown and silver, black and cream, or brown and cream. Phantom Labradoodles can also have white markings. All of this makes phantom Labradoodle the rarest of all coat patterns. Luckily, a phantom Labradoodle is easy to tell right after birth. Other colors, however, can be quite challenging to predict. A general rule of thumb is to pick a Labradoodle that is at least a shade darker than you expect it to be since most will fade over time. These dogs are born milk chocolate and will develop their parchment coloring over time. The nose pigment is rose. Red True reds should be rich and dark in color and the roots should be no lighter. Sadly, this coat color tends to fade over time. The nose color is to be black. This color develops over the first years. Nose pigment should be rose. Chalk This color is a white looking color. However, if you were to compare it to a true white, it would appear to be more chalk-white in color. Nose pigment is black. Black Black Labradoodles should be solid in color with no sprinklings of other colors throughout the coat. Their pigment color should be black. Silver These pups would start out black and their silver coloring develops over the first few years of their lives. The color range can be anywhere from a light pewter to a dark charcoal. Silver dogs need to have black pigmentation. The blue coat will develop over the first few years. The color should be solid once they are full grown. It should be a dark-medium smoky blue. Lavender This color has a smoky lavender chocolate coloring that almost gives off a pink to lilac appearance. These pups are born chocolate and will come into their beautiful lavender coats over the first few years. Their pigmentation should be rose in color. Parti These dogs need to be at least fifty percent white, with spots or patches of any other above solid color. Full or partial saddles are acceptable, but are not preferred. Ticking in the white of the coat is acceptable but not preferred. The nose pigment needs to match the solid color. Any combination of acceptable colors is allowed. Nose pigment should follow requirements listed above based on the solid base color. So, like a good Boy Scout, when you purchase a chocolate Labradoodle, be prepared for anything! All are lovely, but they are almost impossible to predict with any significant degree of accuracy. Once again, be prepared for anything! Chocolate Colors Now we get to the fun part; the color combinations! This is where things get interesting. Partis can come in any color, with either color nose. Some are mostly white, while some have lots of color and less white. The ones that are mostly white are called "Extreme" Partis. The variations are endless and unique, like a snowflake. The colors, such as chocolate, on a parti can change in the same ways that they would on a solid dog. Often confused with "Parti" is a dog with heavy white mismarks or a Tuxedo. White mismarks can be very small or very heavy, or anywhere in-between. The puppy is born either Black or Chocolate and immediately begins to lose the dark color, revealing anything from a cream to a red underneath! The tips of the fur may retain their dark cast, but the dog will present as somewhere on the cream-red spectrum. I have included her picture below showing her in the middle of the changing process. It can be caused by several things, ranging from these common causes to rare and serious conditions! Remember, if you have any concerns, to speak to a vet immediately, as they can offer you tailored advice for your dog. Commonly, any of the following can cause back leg limping: Over-exertion Excessive exercise or even intense playtime can leave your English Bulldog tired and limping. These dogs can get worn out easily and, after a few minutes of heavy exercise, can feel exhausted. Their limping could be due to exhaustion, and usually, some water and time to recover will help with this limping. If it does persist or becomes worse, then be sure to consult a vet. Injured claws Limping can also be a sign of an injured or broken claw. These injured claws can be incredibly painful, especially if the tear in the claw is near the nerve ending. A wound or insect sting Your English Bulldog could have a splinter in their paw, making them limp. An open wound, a stone, chewing gum, or even an insect bite or sting could cause a limp. Be sure to check the paw thoroughly for any signs of a wound or sting. In these cases, you will need to see a vet to clean and dress any wounds and offer medication if needed. Strain or muscle injury Another common cause could be a strained leg, joint, or muscle while playing or even just daily walking and playing. But what about the more serious conditions a limp could be a sign of? Breaks, fractures, and dislocations English Bulldogs are prone to leg injuries, unfortunately. A break, fracture, or dislocation can be extremely painful for your dog, and you must seek medical help. Ligament damage Torn ligaments or ligament damage can occur when your dog twists and jumps. Ligament damage is incredibly painful for your English Bulldog, but thankfully can be fixed easily by a vet! Hip or elbow dysplasia As with other brachycephalic breeds, English Bulldogs are also prone to hip or elbow dysplasia. Hip dysplasia is seen in the back legs, whereas we commonly see elbow dysplasia in the front legs and paws. Luxating patella It sounds like a scary medical term; luxating patella refers to a dislocated kneecap. Inflammatory disease Inflammatory disease or panosteitis is commonly seen in English Bulldog puppies. The inflammation is usually concentrated on their leg bones, and your puppy will be shifting from leg to leg to balance their weight. To find out if your dog has cancer, the vet can perform a simple blood test, and the results are often back quickly. ACL tears often affect the back legs, and you should notice it first when your dog starts to lift their leg. An operation will be required to rectify this tear. The recovery time varies from dog to dog, but you might see your English Bulldog up and walking again within 60 days. Remember to follow the advice of your vet carefully so your dog can recover fully. Arthritis Arthritis is commonly seen in older dogs, where limping becomes a gradual thing. The joints will swell over time, and your English Bulldog can find walking and playing more difficult. Thankfully, it can be treated with antibiotics. Valley fever Valley fever is a fungal disease found in the United States. It can impact English Bulldog puppies or older dogs and leave them limp. Neurological disorders Neurological disorders are often caused when the spine has been damaged. A disc will touch nerves, leading to lameness in your English Bulldog. An injury usually causes this, although it can be caused by too much playtime or a dodgy jump and landing. Limping on Front Leg or Paws, Why? These can be caused by cartilage fusing to the bone, pushing the elbow joint out of place. As you can imagine, that is very painful for your dog and will result in obvious swelling. They will need medical attention to rectify this issue. Hip dysplasia can be quite painful for your English Bulldog, so be sure to take them to a vet if you are concerned about this. What the Vet will do Vet appointments can be traumatic for dogs and owners alike, so having a heads up of what to expect can go a long way to calm your nerves and help you keep your Bulldog calm. When a vet examines your English Bulldog to understand why they are limping, they generally use just their hands. They will press and pull on your dog to see what the cause could be. Often the inspection will follow this pattern: The vet will examine the paws for any signs of injury The legs are pulled to stretch them and see if there is a reaction All four legs are gently massaged to check for abnormalities or signs of pain Pressure is lightly applied to the spine to see if your Bulldog shows any signs of resistance. Generally, this examination is enough, and your vet should be able to offer you a diagnosis and treatment plan. If not, more in-depth tests can take place to diagnose your English Bulldog. It is rare that after these tests have been carried out, a diagnosis has not been found. Be aware that you might need to wait a few days for blood test results to come back, and during this waiting time, your vet will instruct you on how best to care for your English Bulldog. How can I stop my English Bulldog from getting leg injuries? None of us like seeing our dogs limping or in pain, and will do anything we can to avoid it. These can all be incorporated into your daily life easily to keep your dogs from harm. Avoid overworking or over-exercising your Bulldog, especially in hot weather. Some dog injuries happen right in front of you, making it easy to tell the cause of limping. However, some happen when you are not around, and there may not be any visible injuries to help you ascertain the cause of limping. In such a case, you should consult a veterinary officer for examination and diagnosis. However, severe injuries require veterinarian care. Bone Disease Bone disease generally refers to any condition that affects the bones. This can include diseases such as hip dysplasia and panosteitis. Canine hip dysplasia occurs when bones do not fit correctly into their joints. The result is painful sensations, lameness, and even difficulty in getting up. Panosteitis is a condition that causes inflammation but does not necessarily last for a long time. The condition can make it quite painful for your pet to walk, which causes the limping. Another type of disease that may cause limping is bone cancer, or osteosarcoma. Cancer can affect any dog breed , but it is prevalent in English bulldogs. It is usually quite aggressive, and while there are treatment options, the prognosis is usually bleak. In most cases, limping caused by a disease develops gradually and gets worse as the condition becomes more severe. It is quite difficult for you to tell what disease is affecting your dog, which is why you should seek veterinary advice immediately. Arthritis Just like in humans, dog arthritis is more common in older English bulldogs than younger ones. Arthritis is a condition characterized by inflammation of one or more joints. It usually causes pain and stiffness. When a dog has arthritis, they tend to be reluctant when it comes to going up the stairs or even getting out of the car. They also sleep more and may start gaining weight. With close observation, you may notice that the animal is somewhat unsteady in the morning. This is because the pain from arthritis is more severe in the mornings. Dogs with arthritis tend to walk slowly and lose interest in playing. Lyme Disease Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and spread by deer ticks, as explained by PetMD. The tick generally does not cause the disease unless it is able to attach to your bulldog for 48 hours. If infected, your dog may start limping two to five months afterward. This limp usually develops gradually. Common symptoms of the disease include swollen lymph nodes, swollen joints, and a loss of appetite. Your pet may also be lethargic and can develop a fever. If not treated on time, the condition may become worse. Nonetheless, Lyme disease can be treated effectively using antibiotics. Foreign Object Issues If your bulldog starts limping suddenly, take the time to carry out a careful physical examination. Elbow dysplasia is a developmental disorder involving multiple abnormalities that can include poor weight distribution and slowed bone growth. Another joint disorder is cranial cruciate ligament disease which can occur due to a variety of reasons including genetics, obesity, aging, and poor physical fitness. The vet can carry out various tests to determine the exact culprit and start treatment accordingly. For instance, if the dog steps on a hot surface, they may limp as they go across the hot surface. Another reason may be that your dog slept on one of their legs, thus putting too much pressure on it. Pulled, strained and torn muscles caused by overstretching or accidental falls are also a temporary issue that may cause limping. Such situations usually resolve within a few minutes or hours without any outside intervention. This is particular important if your English Bulldog wakes up from sleeping with a limp and shows no sign of the limp going inside of 30 minutes. Breaks, fractures, and dislocations: English Bulldogs are prone to leg injuries due to their genetics and can easily hurt themselves when active. Torn ligaments: Ligament damage will occur after your English Bulldog twists and jumps. It can be very painful but can be treated easily by a vet. Hip or elbow dysplasia: English Bulldogs are prone to these health conditions, being common with brachycephalic breeds. The hip dysplasia can occur in their back leg with elbow dysplasia in the front legs and paws. Luxating patella: This is the medical for a kneecap dislocation. It occurs on the back legs and you will notice your English Bulldog skipping or limping in pain. Inflammatory disease: Also known as panosteitis, English Bulldog puppies will often have this inflammation on their leg bones. You might see your English Bulldog shifting from leg to leg to balance the weight with this lameness condition. Your vet can check for it with a simple blood test. It can be fixed with an operation surgery, and your English Bulldog might even be back and walking inside of 60 days. Arthritis: This condition is most common in older English Bulldogs, where limping is a gradual thing as the joints become more swollen over time. Vets can prescribe therapy and medication for the pain. It can be treated with antibiotics. Valley fever: This is a fungal disease found in the United States and can either make an English Bulldog puppy limp, or an older dog. It is not related to how old your dog is. English Bulldog limping on front leg or paws Many of the reasons I have already listed for English Bulldog lameness and limping will happen with the back and front legs. But there are some conditions which will only cause limps to one of the other. For example; elbow dysplasia front legs or hip dysplasia rear legs. Elbow dysplasia front leg limping : This is very common in English Bulldogs and happens due to bone abnormalities in the elbow joints on the front legs. It happens due to cartilage fusing to the bone resulting in an elbow joint being pushed out of place. It will be very painful to your English Bulldog, with obvious swelling. Handy Hint: To keep your Bully free from injury you should not walk them too much. Here are guidelines for daily exercise limits. How vets diagnose lameness and limping Once you have booked an appointment in with your vet, they will do a manual check of your English Bulldog using just their hands. They will press and pull to see what the cause could be. The check will go something like this: Examine the paws for obvious signs of injury. Pull the legs stretched out to check for a reaction. Do gentle massage on all four legs. Lightly apply pressure to the spine to see if the English Bulldog puts up resistance. Puppies are more likely to injure themselves than adult dogs. Puppies are not fully developed, and their bodies are still growing and getting stronger as they play. Sometimes, puppies may overdo it and injure themselves with a muscle sprain, dislocation or ligament tears. What should I do? We know these seem like scary things for your puppy to endure, but we're going to explain common reasons for limping in more detail and what you should do if your puppy starts limping. If Your Puppy Has a Minor Limp If your puppy is limping but still playing, this is probably a sign of a superficial injury. Superficial injuries can include: Cuts or scrapes from stepping on something sharp. Burns from stepping on the hot pavement. A bite or a sting on your puppy's paw. A broken toenail. As soon as you notice your puppy limping, you should inspect their paw to see if you can determine any superficial injuries. Then, you should call your local vet to treat the wound to avoid infection. If Your Puppy Has a Pronounced Limp If your puppy's limp seems more serious and is significantly disrupting their ability to move, or the limp has been getting worse over time, this indicates a deeper injury. Deeper injuries include: Torn ligaments. There are several reasons why your English or French Bulldog might be limping. Limping could be a sign of a paw or leg injury, a substantial injury like a broken bone, fracture, or sprain, or a less noticeable injury such as a dislocation, ligament tear, joint trauma, or spinal injury. It could also be caused by a luxated patella. There are some more serious causes that we will explore, but as I always recommend please be sure to have your dog checked out by your vet. Hot pavement, broken glass, rocks, thorns, bee stings? Has your dog recently been very active? Did your Bulldog jump from a significant height? Is there swelling or tenderness to the touch? Does any part of the leg feel warm or hot to the touch? If your dog has an obvious trauma, dislocations, breaks, change in the natural position of their leg, any bleeding, or swelling you should seek medical attention for your dog immediately. Depending on how serious the injury is you may be able to address it at home. Your Bulldog may also try to lick the spot that is causing pain. If your Bulldog was stung by a bee then remove the stinger, apply a paste of baking soda and water and then ice the spot. Talk to your vet about giving your dog an oral antihistamine. Superficial injuries can affect any of your Bulldog four legs so whether they are limping on their front leg or back leg, just do a thorough and careful inspection to see if you can find any signs of injury or burn. Trauma or Injury Non-Superficial If you have an energetic fun-loving dog, or maybe a clumsy dog they may be more prone to a deeper trauma or injury. Dogs especially young dogs often ignore their limitations and will jump from high surfaces, run too hard, or try to turn too quickly. This may lead them to overextend themselves which can cause a range of sprains, break, or tears. If Your Bulldog is like my dog I had growing up I swear she had 9 lives just like a cat she may get stuck in a fence, shut in a door, or accidentally run into a wall. The possibilities are endless! Some possibilities include but are not limited to. A pulled tendon or muscle A fractured or cracked bone A sprain Joint Dislocation Bruising Some injuries that may cause your dog to limp may not be so apparent. It will often take a vet exam as well as possible x-rays, or other specialized equipment to understand what is going on. Some deeper injuries could be caused by trauma are. This injury can only happen in the back legs of your Bulldog. A torn ACL requires rest, immobilization, and sometimes surgery. It may be possible for your Bulldog to recover from an ACL tear by wearing an orthopedic brace and getting supplemental support, but depending on how severe the injury is they may need surgery. Luxated Patella Limping in Rear Legs Luxated Patella displaced kneecap is more common in small dogs, but Bulldogs can also be affected. If your dog is overweight they are more likely to develop this problem. Keeping their weight in check can help to prevent it. Depending on the severity your dog may be able to heal from this with rest and an increased nutritional diet. If the condition keeps occurring or gets worse it may need surgery. This is a problem in more common in large breed dogs, but small breed dogs are not immune. Hip Dysplasia causes the hip joints to form improperly and leads to arthritis. If your Bulldog is limping on its back legs or having trouble using its back legs or struggles to get up after lying down it could be a sign of this disease developing. Bone Cancer — Normally appears in the front legs, may make your dog lame and unable to walk. It will be diagnosed by an x-ray and biopsy. Arthritis— This usually happens in more than one leg and in older Bulldog. Your dog may feel stiff and have trouble getting up and down, as well as may not want to jump or go up and downstairs. This happens more subtly and will be diagnosed by a physical exam with your vet. Lyme Disease — If your Bulldog has been bitten by a tick even months ago this could be the cause of their limping. You will see lameness which may seem to move around from one leg to another. Still and Swollen joints, possibly fever. Reduced energy and loss of appetite. Your vet will do a blood test to check for Lyme and if positive start your dog on a course of antibiotics. Vally fever — Another tick-borne illness. You may see lameness of their legs, swelling, coughing, lack of appetite, and low energy. This illness can be dormant in your Bulldog for up to 3 years after a tick bite. Your vet can test for this with a blood test. Treated with anti-fungal medicine. Other signs of these disorders can be circling, excessive pain, dizziness, disorientation, seizures, sudden inability to use legs, or stumbling. Treatments will vary and may include surgery or physical therapy.
