She is very good with children of all ages, is generally ok with other large dogs off lead but will pull and bark at them when on lead and currently lives with 6 cats. She loves people and does get very excited and will jump up. She does not like being left alone for too long and will bark and howl. Background Since the creation of the German Shepherd Dog GSD at the turn of the twentieth century, the breed has become one of the most populous dog breeds internationally and has been widely used for a variety of working roles including herding, guarding, police, military and guide-dog roles [ 1 ]. During this period, the phenotype of the GSD has changed considerably. Subsequent roles such as guarding and police work contributed to selective breeding for larger and more confident dogs [ 1 , 3 ]. Over recent decades, further selection towards characteristics deemed desirable in the show-ring have further altered the GSD conformation in show dogs to emphasise features such as a sloping croup that may be associated with altered physiological function [ 4 ]. By contrast, the GSD appears to be increasing in popularity in the US where the American Kennel Club reports that the GSD rose from the fourth most common registration in to the second most common in [ 8 ]. These varying demographic trends may in part reflect differing true and perceived health issues in the GSD breed between different countries. Concerns for the health welfare of the GSD have been widely aired [ 11 — 13 ]. Breed Watch points of concern include cow hocks, excessive turn of stifle, nervous temperament, sickle hock and weak hindquarters [ 15 , 16 ]. The GSD had the highest number of published predispositions to inherited diseases overall among the fifty most commonly registered KC breeds and had the second-highest number of disorders exacerbated by conformation, exceeded only by the Great Dane [ 9 ]. Individual disorders with reported predisposition in the GSD include hip dysplasia [ 17 , 18 ], haemangiosarcoma [ 19 ], exocrine pancreatic insufficiency [ 20 , 21 ], degenerative myelopathy [ 17 , 22 , 23 ], anal furunculosis [ 24 ] and lumbosacral disease [ 25 , 26 ]. Predisposition implies a higher relative risk compared with some other comparator. However, absolute and comparative prevalence data relating to the wider population within a specified geographical setting is required for a fuller understanding of disorder prioritisation within breeds [ 27 ]. Disorder information on Swedish GSDs derived from insurance claim data on 32, dogs reported the most common diagnoses claimed as pyometra, itching and lameness [ 28 ]. Although extremely useful, results from analyses of insurance data are nonetheless limited to the insured subset of the overall population, only including disorders with a cost that exceed the insurance excess and may be further constrained by excluded conditions and non-lifelong policy cover [ 29 ]. Primary-care veterinary clinical data have recently seen increased application as a secondary research resource to report on breed health in dogs [ 30 , 31 ]. Veterinary clinical data benefit from inclusion of all dogs under veterinary care and all disorders recorded regardless of treatment cost, as well as the reliability derived from their veterinary and contemporaneous diagnoses [ 32 ]. Periodontal disease, anal sac impaction and diarrhoea were reported as the most common disorders in a small subset of GSDs within a wider study that used primary-care veterinary clinical data to identify disorder prevalence in dogs overall [ 33 ]. However, these results were based on a small sample of just GSDs and the veterinary clinical practices were limited to central and south-eastern England. Accurate and generalisable data on the types and frequencies of common disorders in dog breeds are needed to provide guidance for research, breeding and clinical prioritisation [ 27 , 34 ]. Awareness of the frequency of disorders in the general population of dogs can assist to focus research towards the most common conditions in order to maximize the welfare gains while breeding programs can increasingly target selection decisions on disorders that result in maximal welfare detriment [ 35 , 36 ]. It has previously been reported that male dogs are more likely to be diagnosed with aggression than females [ 38 ]. This study hypothesised that the prevalence of aggression is higher in male than in female GSDs. Methods The study population included all dogs under primary veterinary care at clinics participating in the VetCompassTM Programme during .Dogs under veterinary care were defined as those with either a at least one electronic patient record EPR VeNom diagnosis term, free-text clinical note, treatment or bodyweight recorded during or b at least one EPR recorded both before and after .Collaborating practices can record summary diagnosis terms during episodes of care from an embedded VeNom Code list [ 39 ]. Data fields available for VetCompassTM researchers include species, breed, date of birth, sex, neuter status, insurance status and bodyweight, and clinical information from free-form text clinical notes and summary diagnosis terms VeNom codes , plus treatment and deactivation status with relevant dates. Unfortunately K9 data will not allow preliminary testing information in the link which is the OFA elbow and hip test results if the dog is under 2 years of age when the test is conducted. However we do list the preliminary test results under each dog. Once we have the official results K9 data will be updated to reflect their latest test results. We are constantly conducting health tests and updating K9 data as well as the webpage. Lots of factors could play into why a dog could fail their OFA elbows or hip tests. It may not necessarily be genetic but instead could be from the environment that they are raised in. Limiting their jumping heights is extremely important. Simply slipping on ice can cause unforeseen affects to their overall development. It is also highly recommended for additional joint supplements as they grow, we prefer the use of NuVet supplements see link on website tab for further information on NuVet products. Lack of vitamin C in their food is another considered attribute to not having passing scores. All of these factors are highly overseen during the raising of our potential breeding dogs. Unfortunately, sometimes our dogs do not pass all of their tests. We sometimes keep them, but we also have found amazing homes for them. We are even more particular in their home placement as we know their personalities and what would be the best fit. They will be spayed prior or be contracted to be spayed soon after being placed in their new homes. We are very focused on ensuring we know our breeding stock through both their individual health and their genealogy testing. Our dogs and puppies get a lot of socializing. Daily they are engaged with our other dogs, our young sons, our friends, and other family members. They all get a ton of love and attention. This ensures they keep up on their house manners and it also makes it incredibly easier when pregnant moms deliver within our home. Our dogs are not kept outdoors like you might see with other breeders. We also have them go into large fenced in play areas where they play in large groups with each other. We do not show our dogs or conduct any competitions with them. When I am not raising my children, I am constantly spending time with my dogs or interacting with potential customers. My husband works many hours in his law enforcement career to dedicate any additional time in competitions, trials, or shows. Once he retires and the children are older, we may pursue that however it is not our current focus. Some of the lighter goldens that we have also known as English Creams do have championship titles in their bloodlines as does our darker red field goldens. Any of our puppies with proper training could and would be amazing for shows or hunting trials as its in their bloodline. About our Puppies: I usually make the determination of puppies after 30 days of a breeding. I have my own ultrasound machine and can get a good determination of how many puppies are present. It does not give me an exact count. Only way to really narrow down the number of puppies is by an x-ray, around the day mark. I do not conduct my own x-rays and that would require a visit to the animal hospital. To reduce stress on mom and the puppies we do not do x-rays. I get a final count upon delivery keeping mom where she is most comfortable. Delivery of puppies take place in my home around the days after being bred, unless an emergency C-section requires otherwise. Typically, all our puppies are delivered naturally. Someone is always with the mother for the entire delivery. It is very strenuous but has the best outcome for both mom and pups. When all the puppies are born, we will post pictures on the Facebook page. We will then reach out to anyone on our waiting list. If by chance, there are any extra puppies we will make an announcement on Facebook after exhausting our wait list. Sometimes people back out and puppies do come up available at various times. During the initial few days into the few weeks mom and puppies are spending a lot of quality time together. We are keeping a close attention that everyone is gaining weight and seem to be progressing. The pups are handled daily by us. After about 2 weeks eyes and ears will begin to open. The fourth week they are starting to find their legs and moving around exploring. The fifth week if all are doing well, I begin the weaning process where mom is nursing less and less as I introduce kibble to their diet. We begin the deworming process and also begin the first vaccine. We do not travel with the puppies to an animal hospital. I feel it could be stressful for the puppies and creates an opportunity for the puppies to be exposed to other pet sicknesses. I have a traveling vet come and conduct full physicals on all of the puppies. You will receive a copy of her report in the puppy folder upon pickup date. We have outside play areas and toys for them to interact with. They will also be played with by children and handled by adults. They will have several toys to interact with. Obstacles will be in there play pens to learn jumping and crawling. Process Purchasing a Puppy: If you decide that you would like to move forward with getting a puppy, we recommend that you first look at the females and the males that we have. Sometimes the males could change if multiple females come into heat at the same time. We also have an additional tab where you can view planned future breeding so you can have a better idea of potential pairings. Next, I would like to have a phone interview so we can find out more about yourself and the home that a puppy of mine would be going to. In our discussion I would like to know which mother you were leaning towards and whether you prefer a male or female puppy. I can go over all additional questions that you may have including total costs. If both parties are fully satisfied, I will move forward with sending you over the contract. I sell all my puppies with limited AKC registration. Under certain circumstances I will offer full AKC registration for an additional charge. If you are wondering what the difference is between limited and full registration. Limited registration means you can never breed a puppy from me and it will be expected upon proper age that the dog is spayed. Full registration is only for breeders that want to purchase a puppy with intentions of breeding. I am not against giving another breeder full registration however it must be discussed prior, and all requirements must be met that I have. I do require the final payment to be in cash upon pickup of the puppy, so there no issues of bounced checks or issues with sending monies from one bank institution to another. No exceptions. I typically only reserve the first 3 females and the first 3 males as there are no guarantees of how many puppies are born. I go in order of when I am contacted. For an example if you contacted me in May for a female, and John Doe contacted me in January for a female from the same mother then John Doe will get first pick and you would get second pick. It seems to be the fairest method I have come across and will be moving forward with that process unless I discover a better way. I also reserve the right to have first pick so I can sustain my future breeding line as it dictates. I do not allow visitation to the puppies until they are ready for pickup. It also increases the chances for the puppies to get sick and potentially all die from a condition call parvo, as they are not full vaccinated. I have scheduled meetings with individuals that would like to meet me and the adult dogs fully vaccinated prior to making a commitment but not when I have current litters. I would recommend if you want to see the puppies earlier to log into Facebook and follow my page on there. I conduct live videos where you can see all the puppies. After a few weeks old we begin to collar them so you can tell them apart better. I do not place or pick certain pups for certain homes. Some people may not like that due to a puppies drive or behavior. I personally feel training is key to your dogs behavior. You have to spend time with this puppy and be consistent. Goldens just want to please you, but they will test you to learn their place in the household. If you lack experience in training dogs, I do recommend you work with a trainer and read literature so you can achieve the most success with your puppy. You will get an hour to choose your puppy. Please be mindful as I will have others scheduled after your hour of time is completed. I will need some of that time to go over paperwork that is required through the state to complete. I have no problems if you want to bring a trainer or conduct your own tests to see if one puppy might be a better fit based on their opinion. Please be respectful of my property and do not go adventuring around wherever you may like without me being present. Once you pick your puppy and all paperwork has been completed, you will be provided with vet records of your puppy and the vaccines that were previously given. At this time, I do not microchip any puppies. I personally feel the best time to microchip a puppy is when they are sedated which I recommend during the spay. We do require that you schedule an appointment with your vet within 14 days of the pickup date. You may want to schedule this prior to arrival as animal hospitals have been extremely busy. We will have gift bag for you. There will be some surprises in there for your pup, including enough puppy food for the next several days so you can either remain on it or gradually change the food to one of your liking. On the other hand, if your doggo takes after his Great Pyrenees parent, they tend not to be very aggressive and nurturing to other animals. They are more independent and do not require as much attention as a German Shepherd. Taking Care of your Germanees There are a lot of factors that will influence the needs of your Germanees. If they have a thicker coat like the Pyrenees, they can handle cold better than the shorter German Shepherd coat. It can be the most high maintenance aspect of them. They are active dogs and will love to run and explore. Long walks, big fenced-in yards to roam, and even training are excellent tools to help these doggos get their energy out. They will need between minutes of daily exercise. They will also enjoy forms of obstacle and obedience training. Be aware that because of their Great Pyrenees heritage, some of these pups will be stubborn during training. Keeping their nails trimmed is crucial, and you may also need to check for nail breakage, which can be expected in active breeds. Bathing them once every month or two will suffice, but you may need to take special care as their German Shepherd parent can have skin issues. Shorter coats will be fine with brushing every days, but longer coats that favor the Pyrenees will require more. Longer coats will need daily brushing to keep out tangles. These coats can also feature more hair on the legs, feet, ears, and around the eyes that requires regular trimming. Checking the hair around the ears can be pivotal in overall ear health. A Healthy Diet Big dogs have big diets. Follow a recommended diet and adjust amounts for your pooch if needed. The Health of Your Shepnees Any mixed breed dog is susceptible to health problems prominent in the parent breeds, and the Germanees are no different. They could suffer from heart conditions like murmurs and Subaortic Stenosis. Possible eye conditions may include Cataracts, Ectropion, and Retinopathy. We only recommend purebred German Shepherds for active owners — for a good reason. However, the Great Pyrenees is far more laid back. Instead, they spend much of their time lying around, though they can produce bouts of energy if required. Their guarding style typically involves laying around until something happens. This mixed breed can be on either end of the spectrum. They may be extremely active, or they could be significantly less so. It just depends on what traits they inherit. There are some obvious signs that your dog needs more exercise — like excess jumping and running around indoors. Never force-exercise your dog, especially as a puppy. This practice can damage their legs and joints. Dogs are much more likely to develop problems later on if they were forced to move too much. Puppies are particularly susceptible to over-exercise. Their joints are still developing, and too much movement can cause problems. Furthermore, puppies may be very energetic, but their endurance is usually quite low. However, you can expect them to walk for 15 minutes a few times a day. Training should begin as early as possible. We recommend starting your puppy in group puppy classes as soon as they have all their shots. You can begin training at home before your puppy has all its shots. This mixed breed requires extensive socialization, and puppy classes are an easy way to accomplish that. Of course, you should utilize other methods of socialization as well, such as walking in parks and taking your pet to dog-friendly stores. Begin with basic techniques. As a more intelligent breed, your Germanees should master these quickly. Be sure to practice in a variety of situations with distractions. Even after your dog has accomplished these easier commands, you should continue training. The Great Pyrenees German Shepherd mix is extremely intelligent. They need mental stimulation daily to stay healthy and happy. Otherwise, they can easily become destructive and attempt to make their own fun which often involves chewing through your wall or learning how to open all your cabinets. Training is an easy way to work their brain. Running out of commands to teach will probably end up being a serious concern. You can mentally stimulate your dog through other means as well. Training just happens to be one of the easiest methods. If your canine has a thicker coat, you may need to brush them daily. Typically, these dogs will shed quite a bit. We highly recommend brushing them as much as possible, even if their coats are shorter. Their shedding can get out of control very quickly. Plus, the more you groom them, the more accepting of the process the dog will be. A de-shedding tool is sometimes helpful for extremely heavy shedding periods. Your dog will not need a full-body trim. You should keep their fur longer, even in hotter climates. Trimming can mess with their ability to regulate their body temperature, especially if it is done regularly. However, you will need to trim inside their ears, around their eyes, and on the bottom of their feet. The longer fur in these locations can cause issues and should be removed. You can do this yourself easily at home or take your pooch to a groomer to do it. You should trim their nails regularly — just like you would any dog. Brushing their teeth a few times a week is also necessary. Otherwise, periodontal problems can pop up. They inherit from a larger gene pool, which makes genetic conditions much rarer. However, they are still prone to a few issues. Hip Dysplasia The most serious and common of these is hip dysplasia. This condition affects the growth of the hips in puppies. For some reason, the socket and ball stop growing at the same rate, making them unaligned. Eventually, this creates wear-and-tear — similar to arthritis. This condition does have a genetic component. However, environmental factors also play a role. For instance, dogs that are overfed or fed the incorrect food are more likely to end up with hip dysplasia. Overexercise can also be a contributing factor. Bloat Bloat is a condition that causes the stomach to swell with gas — usually for a completely unknown reason. Not much is known about this illness. This condition strikes quickly and can kill a dog in a matter of hours. The symptoms can seem quite unserious, though.
