The mother was imported from Finland and the father was imported from Poland, both from top show kennels within their respective countries. Both parents are stunning examples of the breed and can be seen. They conform with the breed standard, and both come from a long line of standard champions and health tested dogs. They have the best temperaments one could wish for, very friendly with that breed typical clownesque nature. Puppies have been cherished since birth, so much care and attention has gone into their upbringing, by way of nutrition, handling and socialisation, no expense was spared to ensure the best start for them. Currently there is one male and one female available and are already displaying excellent character with big ambitions to lead a mischievous life. By doing this it sets your new pup up for housebreaking success. Believe it or not, this is a huge benefit for their forever owners. As sad as it sounds, these dogs are typically raised in cages from puppy mills and allowed to relieve themselves right in their own cage which typically has a wire bottom, and a tray underneath to catch feces. Because these pups are not setup for success and are a nightmare to housebreak if they ever are even housebroken! Why are quality frenchie puppies near me so pricey? There are a few factors including the cost of the parents, usually in our case k per dog. Secondly, the cost of the c section, reproductive veterinary care including progesterone tests before breeding, and before birth of the puppies. Third would probably be the cost of the equipment, incubators, oxygen concentrators, whelping boxes. Last but not least is our supplements, goats milk and vitamin regiment for both mom, dad and pups. Chances are you are going to spend triple that on vet bills and probably will not have the same experience as if you had owned a healthy pup. For those of you Frenchie lovers who are interested in the genetics behind the blue color, here it is. This of you who are just here for the cute Frenchie pics, scroll down. The blue gene is actually a gene that dilutes the color of genes on the K and A-locus. The K locus determines if there is bridling or not. The A locus determines if the Frenchie is solid black, tri-color, fawn, or sable. If the puppy is solid black determined by A-locus and inherits two copies of the dilute gene of the D-locus, the black coloring is diluted to the blue color. French Bulldog Blue Male: Adam If the frenchie is fawn determined by A-locus and inherits two dilute genes on the D-Locus then, he will be blue fawn which is more of a champagne color. If they inherit one or two copies of the brindle gene they will express brindling in their coat making the beautiful blue brindle French Bulldog. They can express a light amount of brindle like or be like Remy here who is a reverse brindle and expresses lots of brindling in his coat. Piebald is a recessive gene. This means in order to be pied they have to carry two copies of the gene on the S-locus. This creates beautiful patterns of splashes of color varying from large quantities of patches or maybe just a tiny dot on their tail or elsewhere. Those who only have a tiny dot appear to be white and are considered to be extreme pieball. Romeo is a blue brindle pieball. Yes, I let him right in to warm his ears by the fireplace. In order for this color to be expressed. We are looking at the K-locus, A-locus, and the D-locus. K will determine if there is brindling expressed in the tan points or not. Just one copy of the brindle gene will allow for brindling to occur. But remember to be blue they must also inherit two copies of the dilute gene one D-locus. Me What is a Blue French Bulldog? A blue French bulldog is a variation of the French bulldog breed, known for its distinctive blue-gray coat color. French bulldogs are a popular breed of domestic dogs, known for their small size, muscular build, and wrinkled faces. The blue coat color is a result of a genetic mutation that results in a dilution of the black pigment in their fur, giving it a blue-gray appearance. What makes them blue? The blue coat color in blue French bulldogs is the result of a genetic mutation that dilutes the black pigment in their fur. This mutation affects the melanin pigment in the hair follicles, resulting in a blue-gray appearance. The mutation is caused by a recessive gene, which means that a blue French bulldog must inherit two copies of the gene one from each parent in order to express the blue coat color. Are Blue Frenchies really blue? Blue French bulldogs are not actually blue in color. The blue coat color is a misnomer, and these dogs are actually gray-blue or silver in appearance. The blue color is the result of a dilution of the black pigment in their fur, which gives it a bluish hue. Silver Blue: This is a lighter shade of blue that is similar to silver color. Dark Blue: This is a deeper, almost black, shade of blue. Blue Brindle: This is a blue coat with a brindle pattern, which is characterized by streaks of dark fur interspersed with lighter fur. Blue Fawn: This is a blue coat with a fawn-colored undercoat, giving the dog a blue-gray appearance with a lighter underbelly. French bulldogs are known for being friendly, affectionate, and playful. While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Also, French Bulldogs cannot swim, at least without a life vest. They can be taught to swim while wearing one, but they should never be left unattended around bodies of water or swimming pools and require constant supervision while in the water. He is such a mischievous, but entertaining boy. He is the sweetest, craziest, cutest, cuddliest, puppy! Hi everyone! Just wanted to give you guys an update on Hank Mowgli. He is the center of every minute in my girls day. There were tears of joy and excitement — it was wonderful! Night went well — I had my hand in her kennel so she could sleep — she would make sure it was there and then fall back to […] Danielle, Rich and Rowan Hi BlueHaven!! Hope all is well! Rich and I would like to thank you for the care and love you put into your breeding program. Rowan is a healthy and fun-loving Frenchie! We hope all is well in your neck of the woods. All is well here. Hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving! Just wanted to send an update on Pearl formerly Sinah. At nearly 4 months old now; Pearl is doing very, very well. He is sweet, silly, snuggly, and ridiculously cute. He is just about everything that is good in a dog. Petey loves to entertain himself and others with his playful attitude and his puppy-like antics. He loves to start each day with a happy morning wiggle dance, and he will perform encores throughout the day. Petey is an affectionate fellow. He only gives occasional kisses, but loves to get close to you; nuzzle you; lean; poke at you with his front feet as boxers do; and when he is feeling silly which is often! He is accustomed to sleeping in bed with a person and snuggling all night. Truthfully, he can get away without it inside the home because he is an easy, good boy to live with! However, he is overly excited out in the world, on walks, in the car, and seeing new people and animals, so he would benefit from some guidance to help him behave calmly in those situations. At this point, meeting people is extremely exciting, but meeting dogs is just too overwhelming for him to handle. Petey had a dramatic entrance into rescue, as he was pulled from the shelter while he was suffering from bloat a medical emergency fatal within hours. Pulling a dog in critical condition, when we know the cost will be tremendous and a good outcome far from guaranteed, requires a leap of faith. The shelter vet bought Petey time by puncturing his stomach to decompress the gas that was building up. Within an hour of first being contacted by the shelter, a flurry of communication had occurred, an NCBR volunteer darted to the shelter, delivered Petey to an emergency vet, and Petey was being prepped for surgery. But we are overjoyed to say that Petey made it through surgery and is now recovering in the hospital. If not, here is the form! His love and compassion for Boxers was felt by those who had the pleasure of spending time with him. Ken loved sports and spending time with friends. He also collected sports memorabilia and other collectibles like Hot Wheels. He truly loved Milo, featured in the the photo with him. Every time we received a message from him he included a picture of him and Milo. He never gave up hope that some treatment would be the ultimate cure. He worked as long as he could and made his journey to the light in late June. His weakened system just couldn't fight any longer. He will be deeply missed by WCBR, and we wish his family peace with his loss. Thank you to so many who have donated to WCBR in his memory. Ken will forever be in our hearts. We need your help. The number of Boxers being surrendered by families and in the shelters is overwhelming. We continue to receive owner surrenders a week, along with multiple pleas from surrounding shelters for Boxers in need. So many Boxer are coming from families that are no longer able to financially care for them, just don't want them, many are dealing with illness or the Boxer's pet parent has passed away, and many just are moving. Without the funding or foster homes, sadly we have to turn away these surrenders. Please Foster, Fund or be a Forever Home. Petey Donor Spotlight: Doreen Murotsune For many of us who give our hearts, time, or dollars to rescue, we are first inspired by the love of a single special dog. Hana belonged to friends of Doreen, but Doreen and her boxer, Benjamin, fell in love with her. Benjamin and Hana were best friends, and Benjamin was always on the lookout for Hana and ready to protect her from any yappy Chihuahua who tried to intimidate her. In addition to being an active Strut Your Mutt teammate for each of the past 5 years, Doreen browses the boxers in our care and sponsors many dogs whose stories warm her heart. She not only sponsors dogs with single or repeat financial gifts, but also inquires about dogs with prescription diet needs and then purchases those diets on an autoship schedule, having the food mailed directly to foster homes. Origin Story of the Aussie German Shepherd Mix It might not be a shock to hear this about mixed breeds, but the origin story of the Australian Shepherd mixed with the German Shepherd is somewhat unclear. What is known about the German Shepherd Aussie is that the breed was developed sometime between the s and s. However, like other mix-breeds, the only way you can really decipher what this dog is all about is by understanding their purebred parents. Von Stephanitz did this by using a selection of the best shepherd breeds that were scattered around the German countryside. The German Shepherd dog also referred to as GSD has quickly proved to be capable of far more than just herding. Nowadays, these dogs are synonymous with police work, bomb and drug detection, and personal protection. While the breed was refined in the outback, this purebred got its actual start working the hills and countryside of Europe. In the last hundred years, the Aussie Shepherd transitioned to the Australian West, rounding up livestock for farmers and ranchers. They, too, are astute and will often try to outsmart their owners. So, be prepared to remain on your toes at all times. Australian Shepherd The Aussie Shepherd is an emotionally supportive dog but can, at times, be reserved and independent. At heart, the Australian Shepherd loves the company of its owners. Australian Shepherd and German Shepherd Mix Appearance Whenever you get a designer pup, you can never fully predict what physical traits the dog will adopt from either parent. These dogs are mostly well-proportioned with strong athletic bodies. Their sloping back and long legs give this half German Shepherd half Australian shepherd the ambling gait of a GSD with the pep-in-step of the Aussie. This hybrid will most likely have a fluffy, plumed tail that can be long or short. This will be dependent on which parent breed they take after. Their almond-shaped eyes are very expressive. With these dogs, their eyes are truly the windows to their soul. Eye colors vary from dog to dog. Typically, you can see them with brown, blue, or hazel eyes. In some cases, the German Shepherd Aussie can inherit Heterochromia , a condition that causes two different eye colors. Males tend to be at the heavier end of the scale. These dogs tend to sport a solid color, while a few might have a combination of colors. Some are even speckled or spotted dogs with a tricolor or tinges of silvery gray or brindle. It really depends on the parents and who has the dominant gene. Therefore, grooming these dogs can take a bit of time and concentrated effort. Grooming this hybrid requires plenty of brushing and trimming to keep their coats in top shape. Since their coats are primarily straight hairs, you can use a dog comb and a dematting brush at least twice each week. Baths should only be given when necessary using a mild dog shampoo. This will help to avoid irritating the dogs skin or drying out their fur. Doing so helps them avoid ear infections. And to finish off a full grooming program, keep their nails down with some quality dog nail clippers. If your dog gets enough exercise, it is less likely that they will need their nails clipped each month. If you run on asphalt or hike with them, their nails will naturally wear down. This designer mix, however, is a moderate shedder with half the grooming needs of their parents. This occurs in the Spring and Fall seasons when the dog will lose clumps of hair and shed much more than usual. During this time, it is best to take them to a groomer to effectively get rid of the shedding hair. Shaving is never the solution for dogs with a double coat. Shaving a double-coated dog can actually make it harder for them to cool off. This part of their personality is thanks to their German Shepherd heritage. However, both the German Shepherd and Australian Shepherd are amazing problem solvers and can work as police or service dogs. German Aussie puppies have a very high energy level, and without consistent exercise, they will make their boredom and frustration known. They will bark all night and day, chew on things and dig, dig, dig. Essentially, all this dog wants is to play with its family. They can be a little wary of strangers but are overall still very confident dogs. Their wariness of strangers makes them great guard dogs, though, so you can expect some barking from them when strangers approach. Are They a Good Family Dog? The German Shepherd and Aussie mix is a great addition to any family. They adore human attention and would fit best in an active family — they are a breed that enjoys going on long walks or hikes with their owners. This breed can get along with other pets. The most significant factor in their acceptance of other animals is their socialization when they are puppies. Both parent breeds are known for being quite relaxed as properly socialized dogs. They can even get along with cats and other small animals if introduced slowly and correctly. Well, it all boils down to the breeding business. Some breeders are well-established and have pedigree dogs in their kennels. Breeding is an expensive business, and very few breeders make any profit at all. To make matters worse, you could get your heart set on an unhealthy pup. These documents should include more than a standard vet checkup. The best breeders care just as much about their puppies as their clients do. When it comes to rescuing a German Shepherd Aussie mix, there are several benefits to adopting one. For starters, you can save quite a bit of money. You can also have the option of bringing home an older dog and avoid the highs and lows of potty training a whining puppy. One or two other breeds may be thrown into the mix. Take the time to observe if the breeders or rescue staff have an evident bond with their pups. If the adult dogs or puppies at one of these breeding or rescue facilities seem detached or fearful, this is a huge red flag. As both parent breeds were bred to be obedient working dogs, their cross also has that focus and obedience during training. With plenty of positive affirmations and repetition, you will have a wonderful, well-trained dog in no time. Exercise for German Shepherd and Australian Shepherd Mix As previously mentioned, this breed is highly energetic, so it needs plenty of exercise. The German Shepherd Aussie will need about 2 hours of activity spread throughout the day. But you will probably have to walk with them twice a day to fulfill their exercise quota for the week. Diet and Nutrition for the German Shepherd Aussie As an active breed, your German Shepherd Aussie mix needs a diet high in protein to keep its body and muscles strong and healthy. This is an estimated 1, calories a day. Divide this amount into two meals to discourage overeating and bloating. Being overweight can be a sign of illnesses like insulinoma a tumor of the pancreas and hypothyroidism an underactive thyroid condition. As for the Aussie Shepherd, this dog enjoys a life expectancy of between 12 and 15 years. It is suggested that the German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix could live for between 13 and 15 years, adopting its Aussie genetics. Sometimes, unsound breeding practices in their parents can contribute to a greater risk of hereditary conditions. Joint issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia are possible in German and Australian Shepherds. However, below are some potentially serious health conditions affecting the half Aussie half German Shepherd breed. Hemophilia An inherited condition that stops blood from clotting. Dogs with this condition can have prolonged, spontaneous bleeding from injuries or even from the nose and eyes. Epilepsy Seizures can be caused by trauma or sickness, but in many cases, the real reason is unknown. Luckily, this can be managed with lifelong medication. A visit to the vet may prescribe eye drops to reduce inflammation, but surgery to remove the cataract is the most effective treatment. It usually occurs after the dog has eaten or drank excessively, often just before or after exercise. The stomach starts to fill up with gas, then twists around on itself, cutting off the blood supply to the organs and rupturing the stomach lining. Without emergency surgery, the dog will not survive. Collie Eye Anomaly This is actually a group of eye problems affecting Collie-type breeds. They range from mild to potentially fatal, and some can cause blindness in one or both eyes. Your dog must be checked regularly for any sign of eye problems of this nature. Degenerative Myelopathy Degenerative myelopathy is a disease of the spinal cord that stops the brain from communicating with the hindquarters. It is a progressive disease that almost always results in complete paralysis of the back legs. In many cases, their front legs are weakened, and they become incontinent. The only good news here is that the dog is not in pain while experiencing this disease. They do, however, require a diligent owner. Novice pet parents or those with packed schedules should think twice before bringing one of these puppies home. The primary consideration you must make with these pups is their need for space and attention. As long as you make the effort, they will be an excellent addition to your home. Intentional breeding likely started in the recent past, probably in the United States. For over years, these dogs have roamed the American West, rounding up livestock for farmers and ranchers. While the breed was refined in the Outback, this purebred got its actual start working the hills of Europe. Needless to say, the modern Aussie comes from a long line of herding champions! And for them, learning is half the fun. Combining exercise with mental exertion is a fantastic way to wear out your pup. It also strengthens your bond. Daily exercise will keep your German Shepherd Aussie mix happy and entertained, and prevent any destruction that can result from boredom. Their intelligence needs should be met by consistent training sessions to keep their mind sharp. Agility, herding, and tracking are a few sporting activities that this mix excels at. Whether or not you choose to compete in these events you should still consider some form of obedience training. They are hard workers and should be provided with enrichment to combat boredom. Because of their self-confidence and nearly unmatched intelligence, they excel in high-pressure jobs. They are amazing problem solvers and thus both the German Shepherd and Australian Shepherd can be used as police dogs or service dogs. Again as both their parent breeds were bred to herd flocks all day they have a very high energy level. Without consistent exercise, they will make their boredom and frustration known. Exercise Requirements This point can not be stressed enough — This crossbreed requires plenty of exercise and stimulating games. They are not ideal apartment dogs because of this and do best in a home that has a large yard or garden. A fun exercise that your Australian German Shepherd mix would enjoy is being in water. Both of their parent breeds are known for excelling at dock diving competitions so your mix should be no exception. They would appreciate a long walk each day and then some time to play in addition to this. They should be left off leash while in an enclosed backyard for playtime. Remember they do have prey driven instincts so while walking around the neighborhood it is important to keep them on leash. Grooming and Shedding Grooming and shedding are also important things to consider when getting an Australian German Shepherd mix. They will have a medium-length double coat that will require at least weekly brushing throughout the year. This mix will shed moderately all year long therefore if you suffer from pet allergies this will not be an ideal dog for you. While you are brushing its coat, you should also check for tick and flea infestations. You may also need a pair of thinning shears. You need to do minimal trimming of the feet, tail, ears, britches, and legs. With the use of a slicker brush, you will gently brush the hair from the toes toward the leg of the dog. Hybrids are almost always less expensive than the average price for a purebred puppy. This fact stays true when you look into the price of a German Australian Shepherd. Since their parent dogs are relatively common in North America, there is a chance that you might find this mixed breed at a shelter. It is best to adopt an abandoned dog from a shelter instead of breeding more puppies. There are many positive aspects to getting a pup from a breeder, though. Ask to get a tour of their facility before adopting to ensure that the dogs are kept in a proper living space. German Shepherds have quite a few joint and back issues. They are energetic dogs but have down-to-earth personalities. That often translates into a sort of understanding of indoor and outdoor behaviors, knowing when to be rambunctious and lively and when to settle down. These dogs are loyal and can be trained to protect if you need them to. They tend to be good around and accepting of strangers if they have been appropriately socialized. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Since this dog is a medium to large breed , it is best to keep them around families without small kids, since their size alone can be damaging if they get rowdy. This breed can get along with other pets. The most significant factor in their acceptance of other animals is their socialization when they are younger. If they were not socialized much, they are likely to be more protective and territorial. Both parent breeds are known for being quite relaxed as properly socialized dogs. They can even get along with cats and other small animals if introduced slowly and the right way. They need about 3 cups of food divided between three meals during the day. It is best to find them food with a high protein level. This way, they can build muscle during their activities and stay in top shape instead of wearing out. The German Australian Shepherd is considered a high-energy breed. That means they will need about 2 hours of activity spread throughout the day. You can do things like go on walks with them, hike, swim, take them to the dog park, run, or work. If you prefer to walk with your dog more often than any other activity, you should try to walk them for about 14 miles each week. Another reason that they make such wonderful pets is their trainability. Both parent breeds were bred to be obedient working dogs. That makes their cross also easy to train. Use plenty of positive affirmation and repetition, and you will have a wonderful, well-trained dog. They have a double coat that they inherit from both of their parents. That means you will need to do plenty of grooming to keep their coats in healthy shape and mitigate the amount of fur that falls out. Since their coats are primarily made up of straight hairs, you can use a wide variety of combs without worrying about curls getting stuck and causing them pain. We suggest using a comb and a de-matter at least twice each week. Try to get out both the shedding top hairs and the dense undercoat. They will lose gobs of hair and shed much more than usual. It is best to take them to a groomer at least once during this period to most effectively get rid of the shedding hair. Use a damp, soft towel to get in their ear and clean out any dirt inside. Doing this helps them avoid ear infections. Finally, keep their nails clipped down using a nail clipper. If your pup gets enough exercise, it is less likely that they will need their nails clipped each month. If you run on asphalt or hike with them, their nails will naturally wear down. The German Shepherd in particular suffers from many bones and joint concerns, like hip dysplasia, because of their sloping back. There are still a few things that you want to watch out for, though. Minor Conditions. Also known as a GEA or Aussie-Shepherd , they can be loyal and loving family members while still retaining some of the instincts of both breeds that make them excellent working dogs. German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mix is the result of two herding breeds mating. A German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix will inherit physical traits from its parents, including size, fur color, and potential herding behavior. Appearance: A GSAD mix will often have the physical characteristics of both parents but may also look quite different. Most commonly, they will have the fur coat of an Australian Shepherd and the coloring of a German Shepherd. They may also have the long snout of a GSD and the pointy ears of an Aussie. As with any crossbreed, their appearance will vary from dog to dog. The range tends to be more along the lines of medium-large-sized dogs like an Australian Shepherd or a German Shepherd. Life Expectancy: The average life expectancy for this mix is around 12 years. However, many factors could affect this number, including health, diet, and lifestyle choices. These dogs were bred to work, so they need a lot of physical and mental stimulation in order to be happy and healthy. The good news is that these dogs are generally very eager to please their owners and are usually quick to learn new commands. So with a little bit of effort, you should be able to train your German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mix into a well-behaved member of the family. Just be sure to start training your dog early and be consistent with your commands. Grooming Requirements: The grooming of puppies is very important for the overall health and well-being of the pet. Puppies are not born with their adult dog coat or head of hair, instead, they are born without any fur at all! Before the new baby coat grows in, it will be completely dependent on its parents to keep them clean, comfortable, warm, and free of parasites. The grooming of puppies begins on the day that they are born. The mother dog will clean her new babies daily, licking them all over to keep the skin free of debris and infections, so it is very important for the mom to be able to bond with her newborns since she will have to take on this task as well as feed them and protect them from harm. You can use a gentle dog shampoo or even baby shampoo, and make sure to rinse off all the suds to avoid skin irritation. Puppy nails will also need to be trimmed on a regular basis, especially if they are scratching themselves or causing damage to furniture with their sharp little claws. There are many different types of nail clippers available, but the guillotine style is usually the easiest for new pet owners to use. You can use a good dog ear cleaner or even non-alcohol baby wipes that you can buy from your local supermarket. Some people prefer to use cotton balls as a safer alternative to wipes or a cleaner, but my preference is to wipe as they are easy to use and tend not to push debris further in. When it comes time for coat brushing and combing, it is very important that the pet owner only uses a dog brush and comb and never human hair products. A small dog brush and comb is perfect for puppies and toy breeds, while a larger brush and comb is better suited for adult dogs and especially those with long hair. It is also a good idea to keep a comb or brush in the car for those times when your dog decides to take an impromptu dirt bath, and you need to get them clean and dried off before coming inside the house. Regular grooming will help keep your German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mix healthy and free from parasites, as well as keep their coat looking shiny and smooth. Grooming is also a great time for you to check your dog over for any lumps, bumps, or other abnormalities that may need to be checked out by your veterinarian. So take some time each week to give your furry friend a good groom, and they will return the favor with lots of love and wagging tails. Some of the health problems that may affect this mix include hip dysplasia, ear infections, epilepsy, and cancer. This condition is common in many dog breeds, including German Shepherds and Australian Shepherds. Ear infections are also common in both of these breeds and can be particularly troublesome in German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mixes because their floppy ears can make it difficult for bacteria and moisture to evaporate from the ear canal. If left untreated, ear infections can lead to hearing loss. Epilepsy is a seizure disorder that can affect any dog breed, and German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mixes are no exception. Seizures can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, head injuries, and poisoning. Finally, cancer is also a common health problem in dogs and can affect any breed. While the cause of cancer can vary, some types of cancer are more common in certain breeds than others. For example, bladder cancer is more common in Bulldogs, while mast cell tumors are more common in Cocker Spaniels. While all dog breeds are susceptible to certain health conditions, German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mixes may be more likely than other breeds to develop the conditions listed above. This is because Australian Shepherds and German Shepherds are both herding dog mixes that share a large number of genetic similarities, which means their offspring may inherit similar health problems. It just means you need to know what symptoms to look for and take appropriate precautions. Keep in mind that every dog is different, and certain dogs will be predisposed to certain health conditions more than others just like people. With proper veterinary care, most of these conditions can be treated and managed effectively. Nutrition Requirements: Since a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix is a mixed breed, their nutritional needs will vary depending on their genetics. However, as a general rule, they will need around 2, calories per day. This can be split between two meals or four smaller ones. Their diet should include a balanced mix of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Some good sources of protein for a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix include chicken, beef, salmon, lamb, and eggs. Healthy carbohydrates include sweet potatoes, quinoa, brown rice, and oats. Good sources of healthy fats include nuts, olive oil, coconut oil, and avocados. It is important to make sure that your dog always has access to clean water. Socialization: The German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mix is a great dog for people who are looking for a versatile pet. They are very social animals and love spending time with their family. There are many different places you can take your German Shepherd Australian Shepherd Mix to socialize with them. You can take them to the park, the grocery store, or even out on walks. Be sure to introduce them to new people and new dogs, as well. This will help them get used to interacting with others and will make them better-rounded dogs. They are both working dog breeds and have many of the same characteristics. They are both intelligent, loyal, and have a strong work ethic. They also tend to be good with children and other animals. A German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix can make an excellent family pet or working dog. They are versatile and can excel in a variety of settings. Whether you are looking for a pet to keep you active or a working dog to help you with your daily tasks, a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix may be the perfect dog for you. They are loyal, protective, and good with children. However, all dogs should be supervised around children to ensure that both the dog and the child remain safe. It is important to remember that any dog can potentially become aggressive if provoked, so it is always best to err on the side of caution. Temperament: Temperament is also something that a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix inherits from its parents. This can be both a positive and a negative influence, depending on the situation at hand. In theory, any genetic combination could happen when breeding two separate breeds together; however, generally speaking, the most likely combination of genetic material is that which creates the breed resulting in the fewest genetic deviations from the original breeds sampled. When it comes to mood, many owners are surprised to learn they have an aggressive dog on their hands. For example, some people expect aggressive behavior from a German shepherd because this breed has long been known as a guard dog. The reality is that any dog, regardless of breed or mix, can be aggressive to varying degrees. With this said, there are some key behavioral differences that you will need to look out for if your German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix inherits aggression from their parents. In general, physical confrontations with a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix tend to involve more biting and grappling with another individual, whereas an Aussie may use barking and chasing as a means of confrontation. This is not to say that the latter approach is right or wrong; it just depends on how these behaviors have been interpreted by the dog in question at a young age and what role they have been exposed to in comparison with their peers. As is the case with any dog, socialization is key to preventing aggression in a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix. If your puppy has been exposed to positive experiences with other people and animals from a young age, they are less likely to become aggressive as adults. This is not to say that all puppies who are not well-socialized will become aggressive; however, it is one of the most important factors to consider when trying to prevent this type of behavior in your pet. Overall, the best way to deal with aggression in a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix is by identifying any potential triggers and then working with a professional trainer to help your dog learn how to respond appropriately. With early prevention and intervention, most cases of aggression can be managed successfully. Physical confrontations between a GSAD mix and another individual tend to involve more biting and grappling, whereas an Aussie may use barking and chase as a means of confrontation. It is also important to socialize your puppy early on with positive experiences with other people and animals in order to help prevent aggression as an adult. The good things will be listed in the pros column, and the not-so-good qualities will be found in the cons column. A GSD-Aussie mix may be more inclined than other mixes to act as some sort of duty or protection dog due to their genetic makeup. Companionship — Sheepdogs are famously loyal and affectionate with their people counterparts. Great with Children — This is a tough one because oftentimes, certain breeds are known to be better with children than others. In this case, both breeds have a very good temperament. In fact, they can become bored fairly easily if training or working becomes monotonous. A large GSD-Aussie mix could potentially weigh as much as pounds. Energetic — Both breeds are high-energy dogs that require a lot of exercises. Need for Attention — Again, both breeds are very people-oriented and crave attention from their families. When left alone for long periods of time, they can develop separation anxiety which may lead to destructive behavior. Guard Dog Tendencies — While the majority of both breeds are excellent protectors, there is the potential for your mix to become territorial and aggressive around other dogs. If you have a problem with this, this may not be the dog for you. So, as you can see, there are both pros and cons to owning a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix breed dog. If you can provide plenty of exercise, attention, and training, then this may be the perfect breed for you. Aussies are known for their high energy levels, so the GSD in the mix will keep them entertained and active. These mixes make great working dogs and are commonly used for police work. Their adult coloring typically changes, however. Because of their high energy levels, many tend to play too rough with small children. Make sure you teach them early how to properly play with younger members of the family. They can become overly protective of their owners, especially if they sense that they are in danger. They need to build a close bond with their human families. Final Thoughts: German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mixes make excellent pets for families who have plenty of time to exercise and play with them. If you are looking for a loving, active dog who will be a loyal member of your family, a German Shepherd Australian Shepherd mix may be the perfect pet for you. The German Shepherd mixed with Australian Shepherd dogs weighs 46 to 65 pounds. This crossbreed has a medium-sized or large parent breed. Owners will have to brush them weekly or risk having dirty fur stuck in their hands after every brushing session! Do Australian shepherd German shepherds make good guard dogs? Some may be very protective of their family and property. In contrast, others may not be interested in guarding their home turf. Generally, Australian shepherd German shepherd mixes are very active and require a lot of exercise. They also make great companions and can be good with kids if adequately socialized. If you want your shepherd mix to stay away from nipping or biting people or other animals, make sure he gets enough time outdoors to play with both you or another trusted family member and other pets — usually, cats will do! Post navigation.

Being a wonderful companion, it always wants to be close to its people, pleasing the owner with its playful antics. These courageous dogs can also be stubborn, often exhibiting independent behavior. Since it has a hunting ancestry, it may chase small household pets, including cats, squirrels, and birds. Always wary of strangers, it will not hesitate to alert you of any suspicious activity, making for an excellent watchdog. Care Exercise Tiring it out with an hour of daily activity will keep your pet dog mellow and happy. Aside from jogging, walking, or running, your Golden Doxie will enjoy a game of retrieving the ball in the yard. Make sure you have your backyard properly fenced and also stop your dog from jumping on or off high places to avoid back injuries. Grooming It requires a fair amount of grooming, including brushing once a month to keep its hairs from tangling, and bathing when its coat becomes dirty. If it has the smooth coat-type, you should wipe your dog using a damp cloth to keep its fur clean. Brush its teeth on a daily basis to prevent bacterial infections. Health Problems Some Golden Weiners may be prone to some health conditions including intervertebral disc disease, epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy, diabetes, bloating, and allergies. Training It can often be mischievous, and because of this, you need to be firm and consistent in your approach. Owing to its intelligence, the Golden Dox can learn to respond to commands quickly if motivated. Socialization Introduce your dog to a variety of unknown people and pets, and make sure it has positive experiences with them during its puppyhood. Puppies love exploring new things and form bonds until they are three to four months old. Invite your friends or relatives to come to your place frequently and tell them to offer treats. It will help your Golden Dox feel confident in the presence of friendly visitors. Be sure to keep it on the leash when in public. Let your Golden Doxie take part in dog sports like agility, flyball, and treibball since they provide a physical outlet for indulging in its favorite pastime. Feeding Give your Golden Dox one to two cups of quality dry food on a regular basis. You may also keep it on the BARF diet, which includes raw foods like fruits, vegetables, meat, and bones. Like many designer breeds, we don't know much about the origins of this mixed breed. However, we can uncover the history of both parent breeds. Golden retriever Waterfowl hunting was extremely popular among the Scottish nobility. But existing salvagers lacked the skills to salvage the shooter on land and water. They were therefore crossed with water spaniels, thus creating the Golden Retriever. Dudley Majoribanks developed the breed as the ideal hunting dog, keeping scrupulous records between the s and s. Today, the Golden Retriever is very popular as a pet. But he is also an excellent therapy and assistance dog. Dachshund The origins of the Dachshund date back to the 17th century in Germany. Bred for badger hunting, the dachshund's elongated body and short legs allowed it to penetrate the animals' tunnels. Their brave nature gave them the courage to attack the inhabitants and force them above ground. Unfortunately, due to Dachshund's connection to Germany, they lost popularity during both World Wars. But since the s, they have become popular companion dogs. They also argue that a hybrid's traits are unpredictable compared to those of a purebred, making the outcome of a pup uncertain. On the plus side, crossbreeding strengthens the gene pool, reducing the risk of many hereditary diseases and deformities. The appearance of the Dachshund Golden Retriever Mix Having two wildly different parent breeds makes it challenging to determine what a Dachshund Golden Retriever mix looks like. Size of the Dachshund Golden Retriever Mix The size and weight of a Golden Dox can vary significantly due to the extreme differences in the size of the two parent breeds. You can expect your Golden Retriever Dachshund mix to weigh an average of 30 to 60 pounds with a height ranging from 10 to 23 inches. Due to their noticeable physical differences, this mixed breed is only possible by having a male Dachshund and a female Golden Retriever. The opposite is too risky for mothers and puppies. Physical Characteristics of the Dachshund Golden Retriever Mix The Dachshund is known for his distinctive long back that often defines the Golden Dox, as well as his short legs. Other physical traits include the Golden Retriever's face and head, which may have the Dachshund's long nose, long droopy ears, and a muscular, compact body. Coat of the Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix The coat of the Dachshund Golden Retriever mix has various possibilities in length and texture depending on their parent breed. It can be long, medium, or short and have a stiff or smooth surface with a wavy or straight double coat. Possible coat colors include dark or light gold, tan, black, brown, red, and yellow. To know what to expect from your Golden Dox, we need to look at both parent breeds. Golden Retriever Temperament: They love company and get along with everyone, including children and other animals. Bred to hunt all day, the Golden Retriever is highly intelligent with high energy levels. Dachshund temperament: Dachshunds are stubborn with a strong independent streak. Despite their small size, the dachshund thinks they are bigger than they are. They are known for their bold nature, with some showing signs of aggression. In , a scientific study of over 30 breeds found that Dachshunds scored high on aggression directed at humans and other dogs, including biting or attempting to bite. That said, the Dachshund is a loyal little dog that is comical and loves to play. But they are jealous and possessive. What should you expect? The Dachshund Golden Retriever mix will likely be playful, intelligent, loyal, and loving. They make excellent companion dogs with high energy levels and a love of the outdoors. However, they should never be left alone for long periods as they suffer from separation anxiety resulting in destructive behaviors like digging and chewing. The goal of breeding the Golden Dox is to reduce some of the Dachshund's extreme personality traits with the Golden Retriever's gentleness. In addition, the goal is to give a much more tolerant and gentle lapdog. However, with any mixed breed, there is no guaranteed outcome, and a puppy may inherit more traits from one parent breed than the other or a mixture of the two. In this article, I will be talking more about these adorable puppies and what to consider before taking them home. What is a Golden Dox? Both the Golden Retriever and the Dachshund have been household pet favorites for years. With its parentage, it seems like the Golden Dachshund is made for dog superstardom. Golden Weiner dogs are true people lovers; they love cuddles and just being around their human family. They are good around children, making them ideal house pets. Their friendly nature, however, does not make them ideal guard dogs. Golden Weiners are more likely to welcome strangers than scare them off. They are fine with other dogs, but not with other pets such as rabbits or cats. The Dachshund in them has the tendency to look at smaller animals as prey. Golden Dachshunds are not nuisance barkers and would only bark when they sense that something feels wrong. The Golden Dox loves playtime Golden Weiner dogs are a smart and highly energetic bunch that loves to play outdoors, something that they inherited from their parent breeds. Golden Retriever Dachshund mix need at least 60 minutes of play a day to release all their pent-up energy, or they may turn to chewing and digging. Training the Golden Dox Golden Dachshunds are quick to pick up on commands and learn tricks, but, just like any other breed, it is best to train them young. Starting training as early as 8 weeks old curbs their Dachshund tendency to be stubborn. The eager-to-please Golden Retriever side craves human affirmation so he will seek opportunities to make you happy. But this does not mean that the Golden Dox will obey all the time. Training for the Golden Retriever Dachshund mix has to be both positive and firm. They love positive reinforcement such as praise and treats for a job well done. What do they look like? How Golden Weiner puppies turn out will be largely dependent on which parent breed their genetic makeup is leaning towards. Some of these puppies have the head of a Golden Retriever and the body of a Dachshund, while others take on a different appearance. These hybrids are also described as little Golden Retrievers or bigger Dachshunds. How big do Golden Retriever Dachshund mixes get? As mentioned above the average size of a full-grown Golden Dox is 10 to 23 inches 25 to 58 cm in height and around 30 to 60 pounds 13 to 27 kg. There are also breeders who can give you miniature Golden Dox puppies, which are bred from Golden Retrievers and Mini Dachshunds. However, not much information is given on how tiny Mini Golden Dox puppies can get. The Golden Weiner inherited its muscular build from its Golden Retriever parent and got the long body and short legs of its Dachshund side of the family. You can expect moderate shedding from the Golden Dox all throughout the year. Their double coat can vary from short, medium, or long depending on what they inherit from their parent breeds. The hair can also be smooth or wavy. Grooming the Golden Weiner dog is simple. Daily brushing should keep their coat shiny and tangle- free. Visits to a groomer every other month is also recommended to ensure their coats remain healthy and attractive. Golden Dox ears need to be checked and cleaned once a week to avoid ear infection and his nails should be clipped every two to three weeks. Teeth should be brushed daily or at least three times a week. How can I keep my Golden Dox healthy and happy? As mentioned on the first paragraph the average lifespan of a Golden Dox is 10 to 14 years. Some common health issues are the same as what its parents have. These may be ear infections, intervertebral disc disease, and hip dysplasia. Where can I buy a Golden Dachshund? You can get them from breeders, but, sometimes, you can find a Golden Dox for adoption at rescues and shelters. Breeders who focus on the Golden Retriever-Dachshund mix may not be common, but you may check breeders of the Golden Retriever and the Dachshund. Conclusion Overall, the Golden Dox is ideal for an owner who can take the time to go out and play with it. They are active dogs that want you to be with him in their daily activities for them to be healthy and happy. These crossbreeds can be high-maintenance when it comes to your time and in affirmation. If you have the stamina, the Golden Retriever Dachshund mix is perfect for you. If you want to share your experience with the breed, feel free to submit a comment below. About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. Are the dams and sires of Golden Dox puppies always a Golden sire and Dachshund dam or does it go both ways? If so, is having a Golden dam or a Golden sire better? There are actually lots of different names out there for this mix breed. So much so that it can get a little confusing when searching for a Golden weiner dog or Golden Dox for sale. Either term is fine, although Golden Dox is more common. You are probably more likely to find breeders and keen owners talking about Dox crosses than Weiner Dogs. Just make sure to see the parents when buying a puppy, to make sure you and the breeder really are on the same page. Want to train your dog without spending hundreds of dollars? Click Here to check out the brain training for Dogs course now! Why some people are concerned about this extreme hybrid and question the ethics in breeding it? There are some people that will dislike the idea of this cross because it is so extreme. There are fears over the health of the parents and litter, and the practices involved in creating the pups. Clearly, the most important issue on the minds of owners is the size of the dog. Golden retrievers are medium sized gun dogs with a good build. Dachshunds are tiny little hounds with long bodies and short legs. There are many short Golden Doxie dogs with longer bodies and the ears and color of the Golden. These factors will all depend on the leaning towards a certain parent. Some take after the Golden a lot, while others are much more like the Dachshund. Gender will also play its part here. The opposite would put a female Dachshund at risk because of the size of the puppies. Clearly, this safer method requires artificial insemination. Many breeders will go about this the correct way, and breed for healthier litters with fewer health concerns. Others wont think about the risks and could put the pups and mother at risk. Ideally, these pups wont have as many spinal issues, but there are still joint risks due to the heritage of the Golden Retriever. Other risks include epilepsy , bloating and some eye problems. Some Golden Doxes may live longer with proper care. Others will not live that long due to physical issues. Conclusion Each Golden Dox has its flair, depending on how much each parent they inherit. You can find all the information you need about these Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix puppies in our comprehensive guide so that you can decide if the Golden Dox puppy is the right one for you. Here's what you need to know. Because the Golden Retriever and Dachshund parent breeds are so dissimilar, it's difficult to predict how a Golden Retriever Dachshund hybrid would appear. There are tremendous differences in size, coat, and body shape, so it is no wonder that this is the case. The Golden Dox dog looks very much like a Golden Retriever, and it is a very cute dog. All of us know that Golden Retrievers have been the most popular breed of dog for many years among dog lovers; after all, no one is surprised by this fact. In addition to being adored for their endearing and innocent looks, they are also well-known and in high demand. Furthermore, they are highly sociable with others. They can also have markings. They are usually golden, although they may also be red, blonde, black, or brown. Spotted and merle colors are more uncommon, as they are generally a recessive feature that Golden Retrievers lack. Size Golden Doxes have short legs, large torsos, and floppy ears. They are tiny to medium-sized canines. The average Golden Doxie weighs 30 to 60 pounds and stands 10 to 23 inches tall. The size difference between these dogs and their dachshund or golden retriever parents is frequently noticeable. Coat The Golden Dox will most likely inherit the head shape and facial traits of a Golden, but it will indeed have the longer, low-slung physique of a Dachshund with a coat that can represent either breed. The Golden Retriever typically has a wavy, medium-length double coat with a golden or white hue that resembles that of the Golden Retriever. Nature Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix puppies are real people lovers who like cuddling and simply being around their humans. This breed is good with children, and makes an excellent pet for a family. On the other hand, their loving attitude makes them poor guard dogs. Strangers are more likely to be welcomed than frightened by Golden Dox. They get along with other dogs but not with other animals. Golden Dachshunds mix pups are not annoying barkers and will only bark if something is wrong with them. Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix - Things to Know Temperament Golden Doxes are gentle canines with some of the most appealing characteristics among lap dogs. These puppies are inquisitive, lively, and prone to social engagement. However, these puppies become fatigued rapidly due to their small size and may need to be removed from the situation if they become upset. These dog breeds are highly loving and excellent to have around the house if you can respect their boundaries. These puppies may begin to indulge in destructive habits, including chewing and scratching, if they take too much after their golden retriever parent. You may solve this problem by providing more toys and a clean, free room for them to run about in. Grooming A Golden Dox's fur is fluffy and has to be groomed regularly to keep it in excellent shape. Brush your dog's fur at least once every few days, if not on a regular basis, for optimal benefits. You should also bathe them twice a month, wash their teeth , and keep their nails trimmed. Golden doxes all have different coats, so they'll need to go to the groomer on a frequent basis to keep in good form. Remember to get your dog's fur cut to save them from overheating in the summer. Training The Golden Dox are clever creatures who respond swiftly to commands if adequately motivated. Positive reinforcement works on Golden Retrievers and Dachshunds, making training a Golden Dox easier for owners. Going on fast runs and catches with your dog might also be part of the training strategy. Positive reinforcement strategies include sweets, praise, and presents. Golden doxes are tough to teach since they are picky creatures. Although they like spending time with their owners, they are not fond of being told what to do. You should start with to minute training sessions, and then stop when you notice your dog isn't paying attention anymore. Remember to conduct refresher activities at least once or twice a week after your dog has been taught. Extra training is also an excellent reason to spend spare time with your dog. Exercise Golden Retrievers require a lot of activity, but dachshunds are pretty inactive. Therefore, Golden Doxes need a yard so that they can roam freely. These dogs are very small, so unless you're willing to take them to the restroom every few hours, they might not be a suitable choice for apartment life. Otherwise, make sure your low-riding dog has lots of toys and a clear roaming area on the floor, so he doesn't get lost, confused, or hurt when exploring the home. Food Golden Doxes' stomachs are tiny and delicate; therefore, they don't require a lot of food. Make sure your dog receives small amounts of high-quality kibble every day, and choose a kibble that's made specifically for small dogs. You could expect your dog to be energetic all day if you feed them too much. Please do not give these dogs scraps since they are more likely to develop stomach or liver disorders, resulting in a shorter lifetime. Average life expectancy The Golden Dox will require frequent exercise, food tailored to his size and age, and regular vet visits to live a happy and healthy life. The lifespan of Golden Retrievers is generally the same as their parents. The life expectancy of a medium-sized dog is between 12 and 14 years, which is reasonable for a dog of his size. Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix-Health Guidelines It's common for Designer Dogs to be physically healthier than their purebred parents; however, you should always do some research if you are interested in learning what your new puppy may inherit from his parents. One of the most common reasons against purebred dogs is that they have more health problems than mixed-breed dogs due to a lack of genetic variety. While this is often true, it does not mean that mixes like the Golden Dox are immune to their parents' health problems. While proper breeding can help prevent the spread of these illnesses, you must regularly manage them. This devastating spine condition may affect dogs in a variety of ways, with some canines experiencing just minor discomfort and others being paralyzed permanently. Long-backed dogs should be maintained trim, walked on a leash, and jumped on as little as possible. Epilepsy A type of epilepsy that appears for no apparent reason is called idiopathic epilepsy. Recurrent seizures can occur in patients with this condition because of abnormal brain activity. Many types of epilepsy exist, including facial twitching and generalized seizures. You should seek treatment for your Dachshund Golden Retriever's epilepsy by consulting a veterinarian. Ear infection Throughout their lives, the Golden Dox is prone to ear infections. Because of the ear's structure, dirt and debris become trapped inside, and the atmosphere within the canal tends to be damp and wet, allowing bacteria and yeast to thrive. Regular ear washing and avoiding getting ears wet during bathing and swimming can help prevent ear infections. Allergies Your dog may have an allergy if it's itching in a specific area or all over the body, and it's having difficulties breathing. Allergies can also cause skin issues, coughing, sneezing, and wheezing. Determine the allergen that the Golden Dox was exposed to in order to prevent them from developing allergies. You will be able to prolong the life of your Golden Retriever Dachshund hybrid if you take proper care of him. You will also be able to help him become healthy and robust. Conclusion Overall, the Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix is best suited to an owner who has the leisure to play with it. They are energetic dogs who require your presence in their everyday activities in order for them to be healthy and happy. The Golden Dox is the classic pet dog, intelligent, friendly, and lively, and is an excellent choice for first-time owners and families with children. They do, however, demand a lot of care and may be stubborn during training sessions, so they may not be the best option for everyone. When it comes to your attention and affirmation, these crossbreeds may be high-maintenance. The Golden Retriever Dachshund breed is ideal for those who have the stamina. If, however, you are looking for a dog with a distinct look, then the Golden Dox is an excellent option. More Dog's World. Brown, tan, black, gold suitable Suitable for: Active families, guard duty, children Temperament: Playful, loving, loyal The appearance of your Golden Dox can vary dramatically depending on what parent it takes after. However, it usually has a long muscular build with short legs and floppy ears. Its color can be any combination of the parents, and the fur is very dense but does not shed too heavily. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. This means you will be dealing with a breeder if you want to welcome a Golden Dox into your home, so you should be sure to ask all of the right questions before you begin the adoption process with anyone. Most of the better breeders will run genetic tests on the parents to make sure they are not passing on genes that can lead to a health problem later on, and while these tests can raise the price of your dog, they tend to be worth it in the long run. Golden Dox puppies are adorable, cuddly, and full of energy. They are friendly, they love people, and they love to play. This breed typically has plenty of energy to spare and is welcoming to strangers but is also alert and will let you know if someone unexpected is in the yard, so they make fantastic guard dogs. It likes to be the center of attention and will require plenty of positive reinforcement. Early socialization will help it enjoy being around other pets, but they usually make friends quickly with most other dogs. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Its high activity level makes it well suited to large families because each person can help the dog gets the exercise it needs to stay healthy and happy. It likes to make friends and will usually play games a few minutes after meeting a new dog. In most cases, the two will get along fine, but your Golden Dox may chase cats and other small animals in the yard. Generally, this mix is loyal and happy. But it can sometimes be stubborn and aggressive. As the two parent breeds differ in so many ways, it is hard to imagine the outcome of their offspring. That said, this mixed breed has the potential to be a great family dog. Not to mention cute! But is it wise to crossbreed two such contrasting breeds? Here we take a detailed look at the two parent breeds and how they might combine. This should help you decide if the Golden Retriever Dachshund mix is right for you. However, we can find out the history of both the parent breeds. Hunting wildfowl was extremely popular amongst the Scottish gentry. But the existing retrievers lacked the skills necessary to retrieve shot game from both land and water. They were therefore crossbred with Water Spaniels thus creating the Golden Retriever. Dudley Majoribanks developed the breed as the ideal gundog, keeping scrupulous records between the years to .Today the Golden Retriever is highly favored as a family pet. But it also makes an excellent therapy and service dog. Their gutsy nature gave them the courage to take on the inhabitants and force them above ground. The breed developed further resulting in different sizes and variations and registered by the AKC in .But since the s have become a much-favored companion dog. Purebred Vs Mutt Debate Many dog enthusiasts disagree with the idea of the Golden Retriever Dachshund mix as it is so extreme, believing it a violation against nature. They also argue that the traits of a hybrid are unpredictable compared to a purebred making the outcome of a puppy uncertain. On the plus side, crossbreeding strengthens the gene pool, thus reducing the risk of many inherited diseases and deformities. A Golden Retriever named Charlie holds the record for the loudest bark at .Crusoe, the Dachshund, may be small, but he has a massive following and is a media sensation. He has his own Facebook page with more than two million likes, and his YouTube channel has over 84 million views! Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix Appearance Having two extremely different parent breeds makes it a challenge to determine the appearance of a Golden Retriever Dachshund mix. This is because there is such a stark contrast in size, coat, and body structure. However, looking at the physical traits of the Golden Retriever and the Dachshund gives you some idea of the expected outcome of this unusual combination. Size of the Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix The height and weight of a Golden Dox can vary drastically due to the extreme differences in the size of the two parent breeds. You can expect your Golden Retriever Dachshund mix to weigh an average of between 30 to 60 pounds with the height ranging anywhere from 10 to 23 inches. This mixed breed is only possible by having a male Dachshund and a female Golden Retriever due to their notable physical differences. The opposite is too much of a risk to both mother and pups. Physical Traits of the Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix The Dachshund is known for its distinctive long back which often defines the Golden Dox, along with its short legs. Other physical traits include the face and head of the Golden Retriever, which may have the long nose of the Dachshund, long drooping ears and a muscular, compact body. Coat of the Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix The coat of the Golden Retriever Dachshund mix has various possibilities in both length and texture depending on which parent breed they take after. It might be long, medium or short and have a wiry or smooth texture with a wavy or straight double coat. Possible coat colors include dark or light golden, tan, black, brown, red and yellow. But what about their temperament? To know what to expect from your Golden Dox, we need to look at the two parent breeds. Golden Retriever Temperament Golden Retrievers are cheerful, patient, loyal and trustworthy dogs, who rarely show signs of aggression. They love companionship and get along with everyone including children and other animals. Bred to hunt all day, the Golden Retriever is very intelligent with high energy levels. Dachshund Temperament Dachshunds, on the other hand, are notoriously stubborn with a strong independent streak. This stems from their hunting days when they had to make decisions on their own. Despite their small size, the Dachshund believes they are bigger than they are. They are known for their daring nature with some showing signs of aggression. In , a scientific study carried out on over 30 breeds revealed that Dachshunds scored high for aggression aimed at humans and other dogs, including biting or attempting to bite. That said, the Dachshund is a loyal little dog who is comical and loves to play. But they can become jealous and possessive. Many are good with children but require supervision. They make excellent companion dogs who possess high energy levels with a love of the outdoors. They should never be left alone for extended periods as they suffer from separation anxiety resulting in destructive behaviors like digging and chewing. The aim of breeding the Golden Dox is to reduce some of the extreme personality traits of the Dachshund with the gentleness of the Golden Retriever. The aim is to result in a much more tolerant and sweet-natured lap dog. However, with any mixed breed, there is no guaranteed outcome, and a puppy may inherit more traits from one parent breed than the other or a mixture of both. Training Your Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix As with any puppy, it is essential to start early when it comes to training, housebreaking, and socialization. You should expose your Golden Dox puppy to as many different people and animals as possible in different environments. Dachshunds have a strong prey drive and will chase after other dogs, cats, and pets if not taught otherwise. Like many small dogs, the Dachshund is notorious for being difficult to potty train , and it may be the same with your Golden Dox. Crate training helps with housebreaking as dogs do not usually soil where they sleep. Will Training Be Easy? If your mix leans more to the Golden Retriever, training should be relatively straightforward. This breed loves to make their owners happy and are fast learners. However, patience is required if your Golden Dox is more Dachshund as they are harder to train due to their stubborn streak. Although they learn quickly, they are not so concerned about obeying commands. They will only do something if they feel like it! Positive reinforcement methods work best by giving treats and lots of enthusiastic praise. But its exercise needs depend on which parent breed it resembles. If it is more like the Golden Retriever, it will require a couple of long daily walks and no doubt love playing fetch and swimming. Having a secure back yard to run around is ideal. But be careful letting them off at the dog park, as if they are more Dachshund they may run off! Practice a strong recall so you can always summon them back. But that does not mean the Golden Dox is free of the health issues associated with their parents. The elongated body and short legs of the Dachshund make it vulnerable to Intervertebral Disc Disease, causing pain and possible paralysis. From the Golden Retriever side, they may experience joint issues such as hip dysplasia as well as being prone to heart disease, certain cancers, and epilepsy. The two dog breeds also love to spend their lives outside of their homes. Families who like to go on trips and spend time outside the house are perfect for the hybrid dog. Spend about thirty to sixty minutes a day to exercise with your dog. Take the Dachshund Golden Retriever on a walk in the morning and the evening. During the day, play fetch with the Golden dox leaning to the Golden Retriever side. If it is leaning to the dachshund side, the fetch game may not work as well. Make sure that your house has proper fences to avoid losing the hybrid dog. It is also ideal to avoid letting the Dachshund Golden Retriever from jumping off of high places to prevent leg and back injuries. Puppies love exploring things in their early days, which makes a trip to the woods an ideal exercise for your baby Golden Dox. Invite your friends to your house to give the dog the chance to form bonds with strangers at a young age. Make your friends offer treats to the Golden Dox to make it feel comfortable with friendly visitors. While in public, make sure that you keep your Golden dox on a leash to avoid losing your adventurous pet. It is also ideal for the hybrid dog to participate in dog sports like flyball, treibball, and agility exercises. Golden Retriever Dachshund Mix Training When training the Golden Retriever and dachshund mix, you need to be consistent with your technique. The Golden Dox are intelligent creatures and will react to orders quickly with proper motivation. Positive reinforcement can work on Golden Retrievers and dachshund, which makes it easier for owners to train a Golden Dox. The training method can also include having fun with your dog by going on quick runs and catches. Use treats, praise, and gifts as your positive reinforcement techniques. Golden retrievers are one of the most natural dog breeds to teach, which is why training will not be an issue if the hybrid puppy is leaning more on the Golden Retriever side. The retrievers dedicate themselves to exercise until they get the command right. Dachshunds are more challenging to train because of their stubborn personalities. They can quickly learn commands but feel less inclined to obey them. They mostly decide on what they want to do rather than listen to order if they are not in the mood. To understand better the Sausage pup personality, skim through Dachshund training and Dachshund potty training articles, as well as our Dachshund breed guide. If the pup is leaning to the Golden Retriever side, training will be a breeze. It is advisable for the whole family to use similar command gestures to avoid confusing the dachshund mixed with the Golden Retriever. It is also recommendable to start building a connection with the Golden Dox and let it calm itself before undergoing training. The Golden Dox love to chase and hunt smaller animals, which makes it vital to teach it how to obey commands. If you own a Golden Dox puppy, go through the best ways to train your puppy article, you will find lots of useful info there. Make sure to avoid the most common mistakes in dog training. It is also important to socialize the Golden Dox with other animals in its first months. The dogs leaning to the Dachshund side will chase after other pets, sometimes animals bigger than it, because of lack of training. Its energy levels are suitable for people who love to go outside and participate in activities. Dachshund Golden Retriever is also loyal when owners take the time and patience to raise them properly. The alert level of the Golden Dox is exceptionally high, making them great guards for a safe house. A Golden Dox is a welcome addition to a loving family. When owners dedicate their time to the dog, it will repay them with loyalty and affection. The price of a Golden Dox may be expensive, but it will be worth it when it starts to form bonds with each of the family members. Knowing what to do to help your dog with misbehavior is half the battle. Are you making any of these disciplining mistakes? Other common negative reinforcers include a choke chain and prong collar. Negative reinforcement is about turning off something negative, or uncomfortable, at the least, and painful at the worst. But take note… Negative reinforcement has been scientifically shown to lead to an increased risk of aggression of 2. Instead, use lure and reward GSD puppy training Do not use physical correction Just as when using negative reinforcement, physical corrections cause your dog anxiety and fear and lead to aggression. When you got your dog you wanted him for life as your best friend and companion. Not to mention, your continued shouting could stress your dog to the point they shut down and withdraw from you. They will no longer be the sweet, lively dog you dreamed about. Instead, learn how to use your voice to communicate effectively with your German Shepherd. Keep your voice calm, clear, and confident. While many owners remember to obedience train their dog they overlook the importance of mentally stimulating games to reduce boredom. She has a Bachelor of Science degree, with Honors, and has been training dogs for over a decade. Related Posts. Unless your dog is hard of hearing or far enough away that you must raise your voice to communicate with them, never yell at your dog. If you tell your dog to do something and it ignores you but obeys when you yell, your training needs to be revisited. If the dog listens only when you yell, that means your dog knows what was expected of him or her when you said it in a normal voice but chose not to obey until the dog was intimidated to do so. That is a critical failure in training. Intimidation has no place in dog training. Corrections do, but fear doesn't. Your dog should never have a single moment in its entire life where it fears you. A dog should respect the boundaries you set, and should obey commands that it knows fully, but it should never be afraid. Making a dog afraid is a slippery slope that ends in trust issues, poor pack structure in the home, and even fear aggression. Once a dog learns that showing aggression when they feel intimidated makes people leave them alone and stop stressing them, it's very difficult to train that dog to be safe again. If you are not a person who is raising a Police Service Dog, Military Working Dog, Contract Working Dog, or a sport dog that competes in protection sports, don't train your dog to be aggressive or to bite. Most dogs aren't genetically stable enough to deal with the stress of that kind of work healthily. A few years ago, a police department's K9 unit was in hot water after a dog bit an innocent person. If they can make mistakes, so can and will most pet owners with far less training for themselves and their dogs. The person who was bitten sued that department for more money than a lot of people's houses are worth. The government has insurance and that kind of money to fall back on when such a tragedy happens. Most civilians don't. Then you'll have to spend more time and money learning how to handle a dog like that safely. The other option is to buy a puppy from a reputable working dog breeder and spend the next two years working with professionals several times a week to train your dog up to that level. Both are very expensive and very unnecessary for most people. If you're going to do it, do it right. And bring a big check. We still get questions about spanking a dog for this or that, or if they should spank their dog, etc. The answer is no. Never hit your dog. If you think long enough, I'm sure you can create a scenario as to why it would be necessary to hit your dog. Then again, that can still backfire and only make it worse. Long story short, don't hit your dog. If you need to prove a behavior, use a correction with a training collar. It's less personal, much more effective, and doesn't hurt your dog. Finding a dog that hasn't trained their owner in some capacity is rarer than finding an endangered species in your backyard! Dogs are very clever, and sometimes while we're training our dogs, they're training us. Have you ever seen a dog nudge someone to get petted? Most of us have, right? That's a dog training their owner to become a free reward machine. How about a dog that pushes into their owner, or sits directly in front of them and before you know it, that person asks "Aww, do you want a treat? Those are more obvious things, but there are some examples you've probably never thought of. A dog that pulls is training their owner where to go and that they need to keep up with their pace or get dragged. A dog who pushes a toy in your lap to get you to play tug or fetch is another example. When you let your dog train you, most of the time, you're undoing your own training. Rewards come on your terms. Don't let your dog push your boundaries and demand things from you, or worse yet, condition you to do the opposite of what you're trying to accomplish in training. The five pillars of dog training are boundaries, structure, accountability, advocacy, discipline, and fulfillment. It takes time to build these things. Many months and many hours of relationship building, structure, training, etc. Don't take shortcuts, and don't expect to have a fully trained dog in four weeks no matter what that local dog training school says. Don't overwork your dog and don't try to force things before the dog is ready. We get questions all the time like "how long should it take for me to fully train my dog? Does the dog have a high or low food drive? High or low prey drive? How consistent are you? How proficient are you at dog training? There are a ton of factors at play, and no dog or dog trainer is perfect. Don't expect a working line dog to be a great show dog. When you buy a puppy, it doesn't matter whom you got it from or how much you paid, or what their parents have done. You have no idea how that puppy will turn out when it reaches adulthood. Don't place the unrealistic expectation that it'll be a champion like mom and dad on your dog. Don't place the unrealistic expectation that the puppy will be a great dog for breeding. Neither may end up true. You do what you can with the dog you've got, not the dog you wish you had. Dogs have limits, don't expect them to surpass them. We hope this article was informational and that you enjoyed it. We would appreciate you very much if you'd leave a like and a share. Thank you. So, how do you discipline your German Shepherd without punishment? Find the answer to that in the next section. Give your GSD something interesting instead, such as a toy. Use positive reinforcement training. Ignore demanding behavior, such as barking, pawing, or jumping. Use short effective timeouts. As already indicated, the most efficient way of disciplining your German Shepherd is through positive reinforcement training. Positive reinforcement implies adding some reward to increase the frequency of response. How positive reinforcement happens In positive reinforcement, rewards include: A treat: Should be healthy and given in moderation to avoid health issues. It could be a single kibble from their food or a tiny piece of meat, or you can try healthy fruits or vegetables. Expression of physical attention: A hug, a gentle pat, or a caress on the head or behind the ears. You can find out more about petting a German Shepherd here. Negative reinforcement means taking something away or removing a reward to increase the frequency of the response. A typical example of negative reinforcement is when getting your dog to sit, you gently push his bottom down towards the floor, easing him into the sit position. Once the sit is accomplished, you reward him by releasing the pressure. By repeatedly doing this, the behavior is reinforced. Instead, it means reinforcing good behavior and deterring unbecoming conduct. In other words, you should not punish your German Shepherd when disciplining him. That means you love your dog and want the best for him. Consequently, you do not wish to hurt your dog, and you want your German Shepherd to trust you. If all that is true, it is easy to indicate that you should never apply physical punishment to your pet. Whether that means spanking, kicking, leaving him without food, caging or tying him for days, or other forms of punishment that could bring the dog some form of physical harm. Do you want to learn how to show dominance over your German Shepherd the right way? These forms of punishment do not achieve any good results. First, dogs do not have the reasoning capacity to associate punishment with their action and are, thus, unlikely to change. Instead, they will develop fear and aggression towards you, which could strain the relationship with your GSD. Second, from an animal rights perspective, physical punishment is a form of pet abuse that could make you count among the thousands of people who are perpetrators of animal cruelty in the US, inflicting physical pain. That also means that they can tell the difference in your voice pitch, and they know shouting indicates anger and displeasure. Yelling can cause fear and aggression in German Shepherds, which could make them turn against you with a bite, or they could just run away. With time, dogs may also adopt a form of indifference to your shouting and learn to ignore your yelling. From a well-being approach, continuous shouting as a form of punishment can cause poor quality of life for your German Shepherd. This study found that dogs trained with aversive methods shouting is an aversive method had poorer welfare than those trained with reward-based techniques positive reinforcement. Rather than shout, therefore, you will be more efficient if you use a calm voice and make clear and confident commands. Your dog might change position next time, and that is because your punishment did not teach him that doing it in the house is bad. Dogs like their space clean, especially from their dirt. Instead, if your German Shepherd puppy soils your carpet, clean the mess with a detergent that removes the stain and odor, and then redirect your dog outside. Also, reward him when he relieves himself during a walk and withdraw the reward when the same is done in the house. This will teach your German Shepherd to associate doing his thing outside with a good treat and avoid that which takes it away. Letting it go once creates the expectation that you can let it go another time. Instead, insist on chew toys for play or dog teething toys if your pup is still at the teething stage. Most pet stores have you spoilt for choice when it comes to chewing and teething toys. As a dog owner with lots of love for your German Shepherd, you might be remorseful that you denied your pet a treat for not following your command and decided to give him three in compensation. If, as a dog owner, you realize that you cannot be firm with disciplining your German Shepherd, seek the help of a professional trainer immediately. And even though they learn what they should do through training, they might sometimes make mistakes and need understanding from the loving owner they look up to. Final Thoughts Disciplining your German Shepherd is an essential aspect of training. But it is important to differentiate discipline from punishment. While punishing may cause harm to your dog, disciplining is intended to reinforce positive behavior. Rewarding good behavior through positive reinforcement and rekindling it when your dog faults through negative reinforcement are the two most effective ways of using discipline to train your German Shepherd in good behavior. There are several reasons why your German Shepherd may be involved in unbecoming behavior. Some of them are loneliness, lack of exercise, or poor training as a puppy. If you have to discipline your GSD, avoid rewarding negative behavior, shouting, and physical punishment. Related Posts You May Like:. And I have discussed discipline in the past. Maybe not in the context that some people associate discipline, meaning that discipline equals punishment. But rather that discipline involves maintaining consistent disciplined order and structure for a dog to live within, thereby not allowing them to stray outside those boundaries and engage in inappropriate behavior. But let's face it, sometimes our dogs stray outside of our boundaries, regardless of how consistent we are and we feel compelled to punish our dogs. What kind of punishment is appropriate? Or is it appropriate at all? I really wish there were easy answers to those questions, but there aren't. How you punish a dog really has a lot to do with your personal beliefs about punishment in general. To me, punishment is the addition of something negative when the dog is caught in the act of doing something wrong such as an assertive tone saying "Bad dog" or "Phooey that" or giving a dog a brief time-out period. This time-out period has nothing to do with allowing the dog to reflect on what it has done wrong, but rather segregation from its pack members from whom it gets the rewards of affection and praise. In no uncertain terms should hitting your dog be considered appropriate punishment - it is certainly abuse. But I still see people choosing to hit their dogs, be it a slap on the nose or on the rump. Hitting is a reaction of frustration from us. There is nothing in the natural canine vocabulary of social gestures and postures that mimics slapping. There is one behavior that fearful dogs display that could be interpreted as an assault like hitting. That is when a dog lashes out at another dog in fear. The intention is to cause quick pain and then vacate the area in fear of retribution. When we hit a dog we can assume that is how they interpret that action. We are afraid of them and are lashing out. As a result we send a clear message that we are unpredictable and therefore not capable of being a good pack leaders as true pack leaders are confident and predictable. I personally am a very firm believer in discipline rather than punishment. As I said earlier the boundaries that you set for your dog should be consistent and disciplined. What was off limits yesterday is off limits today and tomorrow. And what was allowed yesterday is allowed today and tomorrow. When a dog has this disciplined, consistent order from all members of its pack, it rarely ever misbehaves and there is really never a need for punishment. By showing this level of disciplined order your dog also assumes that you are a competent leader of its pack and therefore has no need to challenge that position. When we are inconsistent with the boundaries that our dog is to live within is when our dog assumes we are incompetent of a leadership position and begins a to challenge it through inappropriate displays of behavior. Dogs are not creatures that live within the shadow of punishment. Meaning they don't go slinking around waiting for an opportunity to be bad and hoping that they don't get caught, like criminals. They are creatures that live and thrive within the disciplined boundaries of order and structure and that is when they are truly happy and willing to please us with good behavior. How to Groom German Shepherd Puppies While there are several ways a German Shepherd can brighten up your life, it can be equally stubborn. Intelligence and self-assuredness make this dog breed hard to train. Many believe the right way to discipline their pet is to spank, cage, hit, or use another physical punishment to mold behavior. However corporal punishment is not only ethically dubious, but it can also damage your bond with your dog. So, how do you train your dog without resorting to traditional disciplining? There are several ways to discipline your German Shepherd puppy without punishment, most of which simply revolve around training your puppy to realize a certain behavior is unwelcome and wrong. This article lists 8 ways to help you train your puppy without resorting to punishment. They are: 1. However, timing is everything in dog training. Since GSDs are smart dogs, you can start training them as soon as they are 7 weeks old. At this time, you should keep the training light and be limited to basic commands, crate training, and socialization. If you start training your dog early on and with consistency, the chance of developing bad behavior is low. Similarly, the earlier you realize a behavior is unwanted, the sooner you learn not to repeat it — the same is the case with dogs. German Shepherd puppies are smart, but you cannot ensure efficient dog training without consistency. To train your dog to unlearn the bad behavior, you must remain gentle, firm, and consistent. Whatever behavior is unwanted should always remain unwanted. And your behavior with your puppy should reflect that. However, remember to always stay gentle and kind. Spanking or denying food is unacceptable and may even worsen the situation. Consistency also prevents your puppy from confusion. For example, when teaching your puppy that breaking things is unwanted behavior, ensure that your reaction and the corrective action remain the same whether the dog breaks an expensive vase or a cheap ashtray. For example, if you are teaching your dog to stop barking at visitors, reward them with their favorite treat when they display this behavior. German Shepherd puppies are quick learners. When they realize a behavior is appreciated, they are likely to repeat it. Training with rewards is not only fun but also helps you build a strong bond with your canine. Consequently, the dog may not perform the desired behavior in the absence of the treat. Consult with professionals, watch online tutorials , read authentic research , before including 3. Use Time-Outs You can also choose the time-out technique strategically to discipline your dog. When your puppy performs an unacceptable behavior, remove them from the scene of the crime and put them in an isolated environment. In isolation, the dog is away from his owner, toys, and all things fun. Although controversial, it effectively modifies problematic behavior. The correct use of time-out involves responding quickly and consistently to unacceptable behavior. Time out should not last for more than 3 minutes or until your puppy has calmed down. What they can and do understand are your tone and body language, and that is how they choose to communicate with you. This can cause your puppy to fear you and get anxious. However, do not scream or yell. In this way, your puppy will learn that chewing, which is a natural urge for dogs, is not bad; chewing household items is. Ignore Unwanted Behavior Ignoring unwanted behavior works like a charm for some problematic behaviors—for example, incessant barking. Nonstop barking can truly be nerve-wracking, and if your puppy refuses to listen, it might be time to start ignoring them when they bark too much. This means you refuse to give them any attention when they are barking. You must even avoid telling them to keep quiet. German Shepherd puppies are sharp dogs. So, to prevent them from barking for even longer next time, pretend like nothing is happening. Eventually, they will stop barking needlessly altogether. However, before using this technique, figure out what exactly it is that is making them bark and remove the certain object or place them in a different environment that is preferably quieter. For example, barking too much during playtime can simply be due to overexcitement. In this case, give them a chew time or make your playtimes shorter to give them some rest. Help Puppies Burn Pent-up Energy Is your puppy nipping you or chewing important items around the house? German Shepherd puppies are energic and can sometimes display their pent-up energy in strange ways. Repeated problematic behavior can be a sign that your dog is not getting enough exercise, playtime, or mental stimulation. So, ensure your puppies get plenty of playtime, exercise, or even a chew toy. They can assume your sudden jerking as part of a game and continue nipping whenever they want to play. To stop your puppy from nipping or chewing, try: Moving your hand away slowly from your puppy Give them something else to chew on, like their chew toy Ensure they have plenty of physical and mental stimulation throughout the day 7. Avoid Physical Punishment and Harm Physically harming or punishing your puppy is unethical as it can cause physical and psychological injury. Dogs that are disciplined through physical punishment may develop anxiety and depression. Studies have also revealed that the use of violence or physical punishment during dog training can increase aggression in dogs. And even worse, your German Shepherd may turn on you and try to bite you to protect themselves from getting hurt. Training or disciplining your puppy should never be about intimidating them or using force. It should simply be you trying techniques and making them understand what you require of them by staying consistent. Even if training your puppy is overwhelming, remember to stay patient. If you are overcome with frustration, take a short break. Calm yourself down, and then resume training. Remember, no physical punishment should be the number 1 rule during dog training. Be Patient Have you been trying to train your German Shepherd puppy for a while and not getting the desired results? Remember that while German Shepherd puppies are undoubtedly intelligent, they can be equally stubborn. So, while the process may be time taking and overwhelming, patience is a virtue. You should not confuse your puppy by changing the rules too often. However, if your puppy refuses to cooperate on some days, remember that it is completely okay to take a break for a day or two. Your puppy would rather take a day off to see you more calm and relaxed rather than angry or stressed during training. For example, peeing or defecating around the house even after potty training is over can be a sign of a bladder or bowel problem. Moreover, continuing to bite or chew after teething is over can signal dental problems. So, make sure to get your German Shepherd puppy checked out by a licensed vet. Most importantly, learn to accept if you are not cut out for training. Therefore, if training is too stressful or overwhelming for you, you can consider hiring a professional dog trainer to do It for you. You can also ask your vet for a reference. Moreover, you can ask your friends and family for a recommendation. We wish you the best of luck in training your German Shepherd puppies! Puppies German Shepherds can be the most well-mannered and obedient dogs. However, much of how they behave depends on how you train them and keep their manners in check. So how do you discipline a German Shepherd puppy? This article will dive into the best and most effective ways of disciplining a GSD puppy when needed. Best Ways to Discipline a German Shepherd Puppy Positive reinforcement training remains to be the best way to discipline any dog, especially a German Shepherd puppy. This method works not only for obedience but also for encouraging good behaviors. For GSDs, this is especially effective because their high level of intelligence enables them to quickly associate rewards with their actions. While some believe that the best training methods involve punishing bad behaviors, research suggests that reward-based training methods are actually the most effective. Additionally, behavioral issues can be addressed through redirection and behavior-specific training. Here are the most critical parts of fostering good manners in a young German Shepherd: Positive Reinforcement Training Positive reinforcement training involves rewarding your dog for good behaviors. This increases the likelihood of them performing the right behavior and can also discourage unwanted behaviors. Instead, they will greet you by sitting in front of you because that gets them the reward they want. On the surface, positive reinforcement training might seem simple enough. However, here are some things you need to get right for effective training: Step 1: Find The Right Reward First, you need to find the right reward. Different dogs have different motivations. Some are driven by food while others are mostly motivated by toys and play. Others find that the best reward is cheerful praise and a good ear scratch. Learning what motivates your dog will help you raise them more successfully. Dogs basically live in the moment, so you need to reward in the moment as well. When rewarding, catch them in the act of doing the right behavior. Step 3: Consistency Third, you need to be consistent. Redirection In most cases, the most difficult part of training dogs is to reverse unwanted behaviors. So, the most effective thing to do is to redirect them to more appropriate behaviors. For example, if your German Shepherd likes to dig holes in your backyard, you can redirect that behavior to something more desirable, like playing with a ball. As soon as you let them out into your yard, toss a ball and encourage them to play. This diverts their energy into something more positive. If you do this consistently, they will associate the yard with playtime rather than digging time. Excessive barking , for example, is very difficult to divert. In the barking example, it helps to teach your dog to bark on command. Make sure you reward them as soon as they stop barking. Practice this until you can make them speak and keep quiet on command. Additionally, certain types of punishment can instill fear in your pup. Not only would that severely hinder their ability to develop a good relationship with you, that might also lead to some fear-based aggression down the road. This might also lead to fear-based aggression where they will growl , lunge, or bite to defend themselves. In fact, most will still experience some frustration. No dog is inherently well-mannered all the time. Here are some things you can do to improve your success while also strengthening your relationship with your canine companion: Start early. Be consistent. Establish verbal cues. Use playtime as an opportunity to reinforce positive behaviors. Tire them out. Excess energy can often be the root cause of bad behaviors. Hone their abilities. GSDs are working dogs. If you give them opportunities to sharpen their mental abilities and also hone their other skills e.

She has a playful spirit and is always the life of the party. She can be super playful with the kids or just kick back and lay with me and watch a movie. She is the perfect size and a wonderful companion. I could not ask for a better poodle. Moyen poodles are so hard to find or let me rephrase that true and high quality moyens are hard to find! Thank you for producing such an amazing little girl. She looks just like her dad Romeo! You do the very best breeding! To think that she will be 2 years old June 29th is hard for us to believe! Loving, sweet and beautiful! Thank you for such careful breeding! Our grand-daughter got a little girl from you last summer after seeing Zoe! Now she has her sweet Babs and is thrilled! Thank you again! We are so happy for you! Jonah is amazing, smart and loving beyond all our poodles during this puppy stage. He makes us laugh constantly and is always ready for a game of whatever, just as long as it is a game. Thank you! She is precious little one. She is so cute, and so sweet. She has so much energy. She can definitely keep up with our Standard Poodle. They run and run and have the best time. She has really developed lots of muscles and a great personalaity. Our vet says she is amazing!! She is so sweet with everyone and great with small children. I would definitely have another Moyen Poodle. I am going to give her a hair cut today, so will send another picture today or tomorrow, but sending one today that was taken a few months back. She definitely has a nice personality and a real love. I just wanted to write and let you know how Charlie is doing. He is one year old today! When we talked to you on the phone about adopting Charlie you said that you could refer us to others who could talk all day long about their dogs. Well, that is us now because he is an amazing fellow! When we were at your house and sitting on your sofa he climbed, or maybe marched is a better word, up my husbands arms and curled up behind my husbands neck. All the way home to Wake Forest, NC about 8 hours he insisted on climbing up my shoulders and sitting on the back of my neck. He is great with our three young kids and his size is exactly as you described. He is about 23 pounds and still has some growing to do. He is very calm around people and other dogs. I took him to obedience class yesterday and then to a meeting and during both he just laid at my feet quietly and patiently. To look at him, you would not believe he is still a puppy because he often acts much more mature than his age 6 months. He has learned everything we have taught him superfast. I cannot say enough good things about this dog! You can tell he stayed with the litter an appropriate amount of time by the way he acts with her. I love him with all my heart and soul. Let me know when the puppies arrive. If they are not all spoken for. .I may know some folks interested in seeing them. Thanks for such a wonderful dog and companion. Our puppy Price is for limited registration non breeding rights. Deposit are non-refundable. Full AKC Registration breeding and show rights contact us for an additional fee. Place a Deposit What is a Moyen Poodle? The term Moyen Poodles, also called klein poodles, are a medium size poodle that fits between miniature and standard poodles. They are small enough to curl up and cuddle on your lap but large and sturdy enough to enjoy outdoor adventures such as walking, hiking, running, and swimming. They also enjoy lounging around the house and just being an intimate part of your family. Their smaller size makes them an excellent choice for apartment living and recreational vehicle camping. Their intelligence is the same as a standard poodle and even their smaller size is perfect for being excellent service dog candidates for people that do not require assistance from a larger breed dog. They are also excellent therapy dogs for hospitals, assisted living and nursing homes and schools. We have more than 14 years of breeding experience, working with clients in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois,Wisconsin and all parts of the United States. All our Moyen poodle puppies come from champion lines and go through extensive health testing to make sure our clients get puppies with premium pedigrees. At our farm in West Michigan, our Moyen poodle puppies for sale in Michigan are born into a caring family environment that encourages their ready transition into loving homes. Each one leaves us fully up to date on healthcare and vaccines. To place a deposit for your own wonderful moyen poodle pup from us as quality moyen poodle breeders in Michigan go to our contact page! Moyen Poodles Raised to be confident, social, calm lovebugs! Well-bred, healthy, structurally sound, home-raised Moyen Poodles with outstanding temperaments is what Magenta Bay Poodles is about. My moyen poodle puppies are from moms dams who are therapy dogs, support dogs, obedience class demo dogs, and always super sound in body and mind. My 30 years of experience as a professional dog trainer ensures that pups are brought up with the best start and every advantage in housetraining, obedience training, and socialization. The very small size of my breeding program guarantees that all my puppies get a huge amount of attention, love, and enrichment right from the start. I raise my puppies in the center of my home — NO kennels or kennel dogs here. My dogs and puppies are beloved family members who live underfoot and pups are very accustomed to all normal household noises and activities. Temperament-wise, I breed only the best of the best. I think moyen poodles are the perfect dogs. All of my pups stay fully natural and keep their dewclaws and their gorgeous, natural tail. Both are amputations that are cosmetic only. For further information, please see the Tail Docking and Dewclaws page. So, enjoy yourself as you have a look around the site. Important Pages.

rhodesian ridgeback x labrador puppies for sale - As such, you may have a female or male with a weight slightly less than the ranges noted. However, provided that is their average weight, and the weight is stable, it is okay. They might be a smaller-sized dog, which is their normal. So, maybe the average weight for your female Golden Retriever is 53 pounds once fully grown; whereas, another owner has a female that is 63 pounds once fully grown. Both are healthy dogs with no underlying medical issues, and both are exercised and fed appropriately. Both dogs are at their normal weights because they were born to be that way. The baseline is one of the main criteria in determining if your Golden Retriever is becoming too skinny. Consider a large adult female Golden Retriever with a breed standard weight of 65 pounds. Notice that 55 pounds still falls within the breed standard or normal range for a female. Keep in mind that just like humans, weight can fluctuate daily and weekly. For example, a two-pound gain or loss might not be a reason to panic, especially if your dog is eating and seems otherwise healthy. It may just be water loss or gain, bowel movement, dehydration, or other normal fluctuations. However, once a Golden Retriever becomes an adult weighing them is not often easy or feasible, or we may be ill-equipped to do so. This is why it is essential to be aware of some of the physical signs of a skinny or underweight dog — it provides another tool as part of the weight management process. Often the first indications we have that our Golden Retriever is too skinny are the physical signs. Often these become the first indications that there is a problem, and we need to contact our veterinarian. Very little or no body fat. Ribs may be visible and easily felt. The curve from waist to hips is excessive and very obvious. This poor guy is grossly underweight too skinny and malnourished. Notice the protruding hip, back, and rib bones, and excessive abdominal taper. A very pronounced taper from waist to hip is one way to tell, and using your hands to feel for protruding ribs, shoulders, and backbones is also helpful. Your veterinarian may ask that you bring your dog in for an examination. Identifying an issue early on ensures you can work with your veterinarian to develop a structured plan to address the problem. Calories in must equal calories out. Your Golden Retriever will lose weight if: Its energy expenditure from daily physical exercise exceeds the intake of calories over a prolonged period. Calorie intake is below the level needed to maintain weight, i. The food is of poor quality. The dog is a finicky eater or fed table scraps, i. A change in environment or stress levels results in a loss of appetite or reduced physical activity, e. Regarding the last point, I wrote an article on common reasons a Golden Retriever might be suddenly lazy or lethargic, and it can be found here: A Lazy Golden Retriever? Do They Exist and Possible Causes. Please take a few minutes to read it as it identifies some reasons why a Golden Retriever may suddenly become less active. On the brighter side, provided any of the above is the cause, then the outlook is excellent. As a first step, a visit to your veterinarian is essential. Your vet will need to rule out any underlying medical problems that may be causing or contributing to the weight loss and determine the best course of treatment moving forward. Provided there are no underlying physical or medical causes; you may be required to do one or more of the following to help your Golden Retriever gain some weight: Change the brand of dog food to a more nutrient-dense one. Increase the amount of food at one or more meals. Decrease the amount of physical exercise. Address stress levels or a change in the environment. The key takeaway is that you should work in consultation with your veterinarian to rule out medical issues and ensure appropriate dietary changes. Then, monitoring and follow-up with your vet until the weight issues are resolved may be required. The most effective ways to ensure your Golden Retriever maintains a healthy weight is to: Feed it healthy, high-quality food. Provide the appropriate amount of food for its normal body weight and activity level. Ensure your dog gets adequate physical activity — not too much and not too little. Most Golden Retrievers are food-driven and enjoy eating. Therefore, if you need to increase the amount of food, it is usually well received by your dog. As well, Goldens are highly active dogs so getting them to exercise is typically not a problem. An inactive dog is usually a byproduct of an inactive owner. Keeping your Golden Retriever at a healthy weight is not all that different from us humans if you think about it. A healthy, well-balanced diet, regular exercise, and keeping our intake of calories the same as our expenditure is pretty much all it takes for us. Apply that same formula to your Golden Retriever and adjust as necessary, and there should be little to no issues keeping it at a healthy weight. Female Golden Retrievers should weigh between 55 and 65 pounds, while males should weigh between 65 and 75 pounds. The ribs, hips, shoulders, and backbone may be apparent and easily felt as physical symptoms. Furthermore, the abdominal taper between the ribs and hips may be severe, with little to no body fat. Bear in mind that each dog has its individual characteristics and body type which gets affected by multiple aspects, so as long as your dog is closer to this range, it is fine, but if you notice a huge difference, this should get your attention. Solution: Ensure the diet you choose is complete and balanced. Choose large, raw, meaty bones. Solution: If your dog appears to be unwell or has a medical issue, the best course of action is to take him to a veterinarian. This is more likely if his parents were skinny by nature or if he was reasonably skinny as a puppy if he did not become skinny abruptly, Solution: Pay your vet a visit, and If you have been feeding it the proper quantity and the vet detects no problems, then it goes back to genetics. It would not be a reason for concern in this situation unless your dog has been exhibiting symptoms of health issues. Stress Have you recently started leaving your golden retriever alone for long periods of time? Have you gotten more busy than usual? Have you gotten a new puppy? These can all cause your dog to feel stressed which may cause a lack of appetite and weight loss Solution: take a look at any changes that may have happened recently that could be causing stress to your golden retriever and try to get him used to this new environment. Solution: If you feed your dog dry food, you may want to try topping it with wet or fresh food, and try encouraging your dog to eat whatever there is by not changing food if he refuses to eat. Exercising routine Golden Retrievers normally need a minimum of 1 hour of high-intensity exercise every day to keep them healthy and free of any pent-up energy that may cause them to act aggressively or have a change of behavior. But if your dog is getting too much exercise and not enough nutrients to compensate, then he may lose weight excessively. Solution: the key is balancing between the energy that your dog spends and the intake of food that meets his nutritional needs. Change of Environment Did you move to a new house recently? Did you change parks? Has the staying or sleeping area of your dog changed? The price of the pup will depend on the breeder from which you are buying it from as well as its bloodline and color. Even though the price is usually more expensive, you can be sure that this type of registration comes with benefits as well as recommendations from other breeders and owners who have dealt with them before. A great place to start looking for reputable breeders in your area is on the internet via Google or Facebook where you can see what kind of dogs they have produced in the past and what clients have said about their services. How to Find A Responsible Boxer Breeder in Minnesota Responsible Boxer breeders should be able to provide you with many things such as health records, registration forms and even a written sales contract. Responsible breeders will also require an application from anyone who wishes to purchase a pup from them so they can choose whether or not you have what it takes to provide a great home. This is done in order to avoid impulse buying and possible backyard breeding which has been known to happen more often than most people realize. A good breeder should be clean, organized and have a large number of healthy pups roaming around the place freely which is a clear sign that they are loved and cared for properly. There should also be a range of sizes from tiny to extra-large since this breed comes with many different personalities as well as body types. Visiting your breeder will also give you a chance to meet and play with the puppies which is important because it gives you the opportunity to see their personalities as well as what they are like around other dogs, people and kids. Be sure not to pick up any pups unless given permission by the breeder because this shows them that you care about their space and boundaries. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your Boxer Breeder in Minnesota You can normally tell a great breeder by the kind of people he or she hangs around with. Any responsible breeder would also have no problem giving you references from other clients so be sure to ask them for these without sounding too pushy and keep track of anyone that they mention. The cost of your puppy is not what should be important here but rather the kind of person you are getting it from since a good breeder will always put your needs before their own when it comes to selling a pup. Since pups spend practically every second with their mothers before being taken home, past customers can easily give an honest answer on how well raised and socialized they are with other animals as well as people so pay attention. Ask for Photos of Their Parents Many breeders claim that their parents are great family dogs with no behavior issues whatsoever which is what makes them seem perfect for every owner. A good breeder should be more than happy to give you the name and number of their veterinarian so that you can set up a check-up for your pup before signing any contracts. Since pups spend most of their lives inside, they need constant supervision which can be hard with children unless planned properly. All good breeders will be more than happy to give advice or pass you on to someone who can teach you how to get started too. However, the problem usually lies in preventing any of these issues from occurring instead of dealing with them after the fact so just focus on finding a good breeder who will help prevent your pup from being put through unnecessary pain. If you notice anything unusual during potty training then make sure you report it straight away since it could be a sign of an underlying medical issue that needs professional help as soon as possible. Training Your Boxer Puppy to Accept Your Commands Some breeds are very good at picking up commands while others can take longer so be sure to check if your Minnesota puppy has any difficulties. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. Let's talk about our sweet boy Henry.Let's keep this momentum going!!! If you don't know Henry's story, Let's talk about him. He's a 4yo male boxer who was hit by a car in Ohio and left for dead. The shelter picked him up, and he waited alone for five long days for his family to come get him. They never came. A complete stranger saw the shelter's story about Henry online and wanted to help. This good Samaritan, despite knowing they couldn't keep Henry long-term, picked him up from the shelter and took him home and began to arrange medical care, while at the same time starting a search for others who could help find Henry a forever home. That's where MNBR comes in. One of our members saw Henry's story and connected us, and we stepped in to help secure a foster and ongoing medical attention for this good boy. Henry's original prognosis was that his injuries were catastrophic. He would need to have one of his legs amputated, plus additional surgeries to address what appeared to be major spine damage as well as damage to two of his other legs and hips. The situation seemed dire. But as it turns out, our boy Henry is a fighter!!! Despite his situation, he was in good spirits and started to show improvements in his legs, so the team decided to move forward with finding a treatment path for him. An MRI and assessment revealed that Henry's injuries, while extensive, were operable, and the orthopedic surgeon believed that they could save all Henry's limbs! Since then, Henry has had several therapies, including new water therapy, and he is healing! Henry is a sweet boy who is the definition of a champ! Henry arrived in Minnesota finally in January, since then he has been being seen at the University of Minnesota Veterinary medical clinic. But we are not getting too excited his care is not over quite yet. And he will also need follow up appointments from the surgery he just endured, bandage changes, etc. Donations are tax deductible.
