The natural look of the Bouvier is that of a large shaggy farm dog, usually with some dirt and weeds clinging to his tousled coat. His esthetics are those of an unmade bed. Basic obedience and household rules training is NOT optional for the Bouvier. What you allow or forbid is unimportant; but it is critical that you, not the dog, make these choices and that you enforce your rules consistently. You must commit yourself to attending an 8 to 10 week series of weekly lessons at a local obedience club or professional trainer and to doing one or two short 5 to 20 minutes homework sessions per day. As commands are learned, they must be integrated into your daily life by being used whenever appropriate and enforced consistently. Young Bouvier puppies are relatively easy to train : they are eager to please , intelligent, and calm-natured , with a relatively good attention span. Once a Bouvier has learned something, he tends to retain it well. Your cute sweet little Bouvier puppy will grow up to be a large, powerful dog with a highly self-assertive personality and the determination to finish whatever he starts. If he has grown up respecting you and your rules, then all his physical and mental strength will work for you. But if he has grown up without rules and guidance from you, surely he will make his own rules and his physical and mental powers will often act in opposition to your needs and desires. For example: he may tow you down the street as if competing in a sled-dog race; he may grab food off the table; he may forbid your guests entry to his home. This training cannot be delegated to someone else, eg by sending the dog away to "boarding school", because the relationship of respect and obedience is personal between the dog and the individual who does the training. This is true of all dogs to greater or lesser degree, but definitely to a very great degree in Bouviers. While you definitely may want the help of an experienced trainer to teach you how to train your dog, you yourself must actually train your Bouvier. As each lesson is well learned, then rest of the household except young children must also work with the dog , insisting he obey them as well. Many of the Bouviers that are rescued from Pounds and Shelters show clearly that they have received little or no basic training, neither in obedience nor in household deportment; yet these same dogs respond well to such training by the rescuer or the adopter. It seems likely that a failure to train the dog is a significant cause of Bouvier abandonment. If you don't intend to educate your dog, preferably during puppyhood, you would be better off with a breed that is both small and socially submissive, eg a Shetland Sheepdog. Such a dog does require training, but a little bit goes further than with a Bouv. In the opposite direction, if your goals in obedience training are oriented towards success at high level competition HIT, OTCh, and Gaines , please realize that the Bouv is not among the half dozen breeds best suited to such highly polished performance. Bouvs can, with adequate training, excel at such "working" competitions as agility, carting, tracking, protection, and herding. Update: there is really no dog who can be raised without basic training in obedience and household manners. Cats require some training too. In addition to a daily formal training session while the dog is learning new material, I strongly recommend dozens of "60 second" sessions throughout the day, each consisting of just one or two items successfully performed. Responsiveness becomes a way of life for the dog, and monitoring his behavior becomes a way of life for the humans. Dogs do not believe in social equality. They life in a social hierarchy led by a pack-leader alpha. The alpha dog is generally benevolent, affectionate, and non-bullying towards his subordinates; but there is never any doubt in his mind or in theirs that the alpha is the boss and makes the rules. Whatever the breed, if you do not assume the leadership, the dog will do so sooner or later and with more or less unpleasant consequences for the abdicating owner. Like the untrained dog , the pack-leader dog makes his own rules and enforces them against other members of the household by means of a dominant physical posture and a hard-eyed stare, followed by a snarl, then a knockdown blow or a bite. Breeds differ in tendencies towards social dominance; and individuals within a breed differ considerably. Bouviers as a breed tend to be of a socially dominant personality. You really cannot afford to let a Bouvier become your boss. You do not have to have the personality or mannerisms of a Marine boot camp Sargent, but you do have to have the calm, quiet self-assurance and self-assertion of the successful parent "Because I'm your mother, that's why. If you think you might have difficulty asserting yourself calmly and confidently to exercise leadership, then choose a breed known for its socially subordinate disposition, such as a Golden Retriever or a Shetland Sheepdog, and be sure to ask the breeder to select one of the more submissive pups in the litter for you. If the whole idea of "being the boss" frightens or repels you, don't get a dog at all. Cats don't expect leadership. A caged bird, hamster , or fish doesn't need leadership or household rules. Leadership and training are inextricably intertwined: leadership personality enables you to train your dog, and being trained by you reinforces your dog's perception of you as the alpha. Update: I often refer to the quality of being a pack-leader as "Alphatude", meaning the attitude of being the leader. The relationship can be one of great mellowness, depth, and subtlety; it is a relationship on an adult-to-adult level, although certainly not one devoid of playfulness. As puppies, of course they will be more dependant, more playful, and more demonstrative. In summary, Bouvs tend to be sober and thoughtful, rather than giddy clowns or synchophants. A number of breeds retain into adulthood a more puppyish and playful disposition, eg Australian Shepherd, Malamute, and others. Update: Bouviers vary quite a bit in the degree of attention and affection they seek and in degree of demonstrativeness as well as varying in playfulness. So some are more demonstratively affectionate than described above, but still they are not usually as much so as some other breeds. The degree of warmth shown towards strangers also can vary from cooly condescendingly polite genuinely aloof to very solicitous of petting from strangers. I still consider them to be more "adult" than many other dogs. The Bouvier's thick shaggy coat and his love of playing in water and mud combine to make him a highly efficient transporter of dirt into you home, depositing same on your floors and rugs and possibly also on your furniture and clothes. One Bouvier coming in from a few minutes outdoors on a rainy day can turn an immaculate house into an instant hog wallow. His full beard soaks up water every time he takes a drink, then releases same drippingly across your floor or soppingly into your lap. It is of course possible to cut the beard off and to keep the feet clean-shaven year-round to reduce mess. Although it is technically true that Bouviers do not shed, you will find that the grooming process usually results in balls of pulled out hair tumbleweeding their way about your house, unless you deposit same directly from comb into a trash basket. I don't mean to imply that you must be a slob or slattern to live happily with a Bouv, but you do have to have the attitude that your dog's company means more to you than does neatness and you do have to be comfortable with a less than immaculate house. While all dogs, like all children, create a greater or lesser degree of household mess, almost all other breeds of dog except the Old English Sheepdog are less troublesome than the Bouvier in this respect. The Basenji is perhaps the cleanest, due to its cat-like habits; but cats are cleaner yet, and goldfish hardly ever mess up the house. Bouvier anyway? It is a well kept secret, revealed to you here, that Goddess will not strike you dead if you do cut off your Bouv's beard or even keep him in a "working clip" short coat all over. I've advised a number of people to do this. Related to cleanliness, I also get many inquiries as to whether it is true that Bouvier are less provocative of allergies in people who tend to be allergic to dogs. The answer is I really don't know. I always advise the person to make a test by spending quite a bit of time with Bouvs in close quarters and to take a bag of hair home to place in their pillow. Some people do seem to find Bouvs more acceptable to their allergy status than other dogs. However Poodles and other breeds share this less-allergenic reputation and might be a better choice. Bouviers are one of the more flatulent breeds of dog. While the volume and aroma of the emissions depends partly on the diet, about half an hour after his meal your nose knows! As the period of maximum emissions lasts only half an hour to an hour, it would not be unreasonable to put the dog outdoors in a fenced yard for this period. The Bouvier coat, when damp, tends to smell rather swampy. A wet Bouv confined to a car or small room for an hour or so can create an aroma even the least sensitive will perceive. Some people consider the Bouvier beard to have noticeably unpleasant body odor even when dry and recently groomed. The Bouvier beard tends to retain particles of food, which soon become offensive if the beard is not washed frequently. I'm sure many other breeds are less flatulent, but it is difficult to get reliable information on this as few owners care to discuss the issue. Flatulence does seem to vary with the dog's diet. Better quality food seems to produce less flatulence. You have to experiment. And you do get used to it in time. Older dogs seem more prone to flatulence. There is a product called "Beano" or "Curtail" that is supposed to prevent flatulence. I have no idea if it works. As to coat odors generally, it certainly helps if you bathe the dog from time to time. Or you might keep the coat short and cut off the beard if you are not willing to wash it frequently. The thick shaggy Bouvier coat demands regular grooming, not merely to took tolerably nice, but also to preserve the health of skin underneath and to detect and remove foxtails, ticks, and other dangerous invaders. For "pet" grooming, you should expect to spend minutes a day eg while listening to music or watching television on alternate days or half an hour twice a week. Of course any time your Bouv gets into cockleburrs, filigree, or other coat-adhering vegetation, you are likely to be in for an hour or more of remedial work. During "foxtail" season western U. Keeping the dog in a short or semi-short "working clip" substantially reduces grooming time, but does not eliminate the need for regularity. Almost every Bouvier that is rescued out of a Pound or Shelter shows the effects of many months of non-grooming, resulting in massive matting and horrendous filthiness, sometimes with urine and feces cemented into the rear portions of the coat. It appears that unwillingness to keep up with coat care is a primary cause of abandonment. Many other breeds of dog require less grooming; short coated breeds require very little. The Rottweiler has a temperament and personality similar to the Bouvier, yet requires little grooming. Professional grooming at monthly or more frequent intervals can reduce your personal workload but it will also greatly reduce your bank account. Keeping the dog clipped to a coat length of an inch to two inches makes more sense and is practical in many climates. If choosing an adult dog, try to choose one with a very harsh outer coat and only a modest amount of undercoat. However I would discourage you from making coat your number one priority, as behavior and personality are far far more crucial to your relationship with and enjoyment of the dog. DON'T buy a Bouvier if you also have a cat, unless you are willing to do a great deal of work to ensure peace between them. Many dogs will chase and grab anything that runs. The larger the dog, the more easily it can inflict damage on a cat. Any dog has to be carefully taught to live in peace with a cat. Bouvier are large and powerful and most of them have very strong prey chasing drive. So a Bouvier can kill a cat in the very first second of contact. Expect to spend at least a hundred hours vigilantly supervising all interactions between dog and cat, and be prepared without fail to separate them when you are not in immediate and vigilant supervision. Some Bouviers do live in harmony with cats, especially if raised with them from puppyhood. But there are plenty who are not so safe with cats. My own theory is that a Bouv is "guilty until proven innocent" where cats are concerned. Generally speaking if you want the best chance of having a dog who is safe with cats, you should avoid the Terriers because they are bred to be intense about killing mammalian prey and likewise you should avoid the Hounds because they are bred to chase mammalian prey. The Herding dogs have a strong chase drive, though the kill part of the sequence is somewhat weakened. The larger the dog , the more potential for serious injuries. So the best bet for adding a dog to a home that already includes a cat would be a dog that is not significantly larger than the cat and that is not a Terrier, Hound, or Herding breed. If your cat is one who is afraid of dogs and runs from them, the risks of a chase and grab are much higher than if your cat is a "Garfield" who stands his ground and is ready to whap the dog with claws. If providing this exercise is beyond you, physically or temperamentally, then choose one of the many small and energetic breeds that can exercise itself within your fenced yard. Most of the Toys and Terriers fit this description, but don't be surprised if a Terrier is inclined to dig in the earth since digging out critters is the job that they were bred to do. Whatever the breed, before a dog can be safely protection trained, he must have great respect for the leadership of his handler and must be solidly trained in basic obedience to that handler. Equally essential, he must have a rock-solidly stable temperament and he must also have been "socialized" out in the world enough to know that most people are friendly and harmless, so that he can later learn to distinguish the bad guys from the good guys. Even with such a dog, safe protection training demands several hundred hours of dedicated work by the handler, much of it under the direct supervision of a profoundly expert trainer. Without training and leadership from you to guide him , the dog cannot judge correctly whom to repel and whom to tolerate. Without training and leadership, sooner or later he may injure an innocent person who will successfully sue you for more than you own. Be sure to contact your local Bouvier club or Rescue group if you are diagnosed as terminally ill or have other equally valid reason for seeking an adoptive home. Be sure to contact your local Bouvier club if you are beginning to have difficulties in training your Bouvier, so these can be resolved Be sure to make arrangements in your will or with your family to ensure continued care or adoptive home for your Bouvier if you should pre-decease him. The life span of a Bouvier is from 10 to 15 years. If that seems too long a time for you to give an unequivocal loyalty to your Bouvier, then please do not get one! You may even notice that their ears look different every day during this period. They might be up-right one day, then floppy the next, or even change throughout the day depending on their mood. Their ears will return back to their original shape as soon as their hormones calm down. Although most German Shepherds have up-right ears, some can have floppy or semi-pricked ones. Judges of dog shows and competitions also often look for large ears in the breed. Poor nutrition during puppyhood As mentioned above, calcium is needed to develop and strengthen the cartilage in the ears in order for them to stand up. Vitamin D is also needed to keep bones healthy and strong. This is especially common in rescue dogs that come from puppy farms, homelessness, and neglectful backgrounds. Dogs can be allergic to environmental allergens like pollen, household cleaning products, and foods like wheat and dairy. Other symptoms of allergies can include skin irritation, coughing, sneezing, runny noses and eyes, and stomach upsets. Each has different symptoms, but they often include drastic changes in energy, coat, thirst, appetite, and weight. German Shepherds are also particularly prone to experiencing hormonal disorders. Ear mites Another cause of ear drooping in German Shepherds is ear mites. Ear mites can be picked up outdoors, or from coming into contact with another animal with the condition. The inflammation from the infestation can cause droopiness in the affected ear. Other symptoms include excessive itchiness, and redness, bleeding, and swelling from the constant scratching. If left untreated, the infestation can cause disease, which can lead to hearing loss and balance issues. Infection Ear infections can be bacterial or fungal, and they can affect both the inner or outer ear. They are most often picked up after exposure to water, and the inflammation can cause the affected ear to droop. Other symptoms can include redness, swelling, irritation, discharge, and excessive head shaking or scratching at the ear. Vets can treat ear infections with antibacterial or antifungal medications, but they need to be treated quickly before they spread or cause permanent damage. Trauma Physical trauma to the ears can also cause them to droop. The most common trauma that causes changes to the shape of the ears in German Shepherds are bites from fighting with other dogs. If your dog has a visible injury to their ear, you should take them to see their vet to check it over and dress any wounds to prevent infection. Make sure to brush your GSD regularly, also around the head and ears — these dogs shed heavily! You can get these over-the-counter at your vet, online, or in a pet store. You can also use a few drops of olive oil for wax build-up, but not too much. To administer, get a towel and ask your dog to lie down in a comfortable place in the home. Then, massage the mase of their ears for around 30 seconds to help it loosen any wax or dirt. Finally, allow your dog to shake their head and use the towel to catch what comes out. That said, if they have particularly problem ears, you should ask your vet and do it however often they suggest, which could be weekly or monthly. However, this is very controversial. It is not yet illegal in the USA, but it is also not something that we would recommend outside of medical necessity, as it can be unnecessarily stressful and painful for dogs. The method known as taping is done by placing something, usually tape, inside the ear to make it stand up straight and grow into that position permanently. It can be effective when done during puppyhood and usually takes weeks to work. As we mentioned above, nutritional deficiencies can cause the ears to flop. Puppies should eat nutritionally complete and balanced food that is enriched with calcium, vitamin D, and DHA for healthy bone and brain development, as well as high-quality protein sources like chicken and fish for strong muscles, and tasty, fiber-rich fruits and veggies. All puppies should have a handful of strong, hardy chew toys to avoid being destroyed during teething, but they can also help the ears to stand up. This is because the ears are connected to the jaw. So, strong jaw muscles means stronger ears, too! Finally, you should avoid playing too rough with your pup and interacting with boisterous dogs to prevent accidents and traumas, which, as we mentioned above, could damage or change the shape of their ears. Dogs communicate with us owners in many ways; they bark, they growl, and they use their bodies. Body language is a key part of understanding how your dog is feeling. Dogs use their entire bodies to communicate; including their tails, their eyes, and their ears! This often happens when a suspicious stranger or an unknown or unfriendly dog is approaching, or when there is a strange noise inside the home. When their ears go back or downwards, it could simply mean that they are listening, or it could indicate either excitement or anxiety. Excited dogs may whine, wag their tails very quickly, and run towards what they are excited about. This happens a lot when dogs are greeting a loved one. An anxious dog, on the other hand, may lower their head and cower their bodies away from what is causing their anxiety. If they are frightened, they may also tremble and whine, and if they are feeling angry or threatened, they may show their teeth and growl. This can happen when a dog is exposed to a phobia or an aggressive dog. It can be difficult to determine exactly how a mixed dog will look. Different pups from the same litter can also present with different traits from their siblings. That said, certain traits, like short hair, for example, are genetically dominant and therefore will be passed on over others, like long hair, which is genetically recessive. GRPU readily spreads because: Affected dogs are not usually diagnosed until they are on average 8 to 9 years of age—usually after they are finished breeding. Unless dogs can be diagnosed before they are bred, GRPU will continue to spread. There may exist a carrier state—unaffected dogs that carry the gene and then breed, spreading the disease. If a carrier state exists, there is currently no way to identify these dogs. Often, affected dogs are not diagnosed correctly as having GRPU. It is likely that many affected dogs are bred that are never examined by a VO, with only GPDVMs seeing these dogs when they are in crisis. This means that older dogs are not regularly examined by veterinary ophthalmologists, resulting in missed diagnoses of dogs with GRPU. The prevalence of GRPU is not well known. This is a very high incidence! These dogs are mostly family pets and not showdogs or breeding dogs. NOTE: Just as with other dog breeds, it must be understood that many Golden Retriever breeders are not professional breeders. If you have a Golden Retriever as a family pet, do not assume that the breeder of your dog had annual OFA ECR examinations done on the parents or other related dogs. Clinical Signs In order to understand the clinical signs, it is important to understand eye anatomy; please refer to this diagram. This is very sad, because if these dogs had been examined annually by an ophthalmologist, GRPU could have been detected much earlier, the dogs then placed on lifetime medication, and vision likely saved. Both eyes are almost always affected. If GRPU is too advanced and the eye s are blinded by glaucoma, vision cannot be recovered; sadly, in these cases both eyes usually need to be removed. This redness is often mistakenly attributed to allergies allergic conjunctivitis , and it usually temporarily resolves with topical steroid ophthalmic medication until the next episode of redness occurs. There is rarely any history of ocular discomfort or vision loss until the time of crisis. Sometimes there is a history of gradual cloudiness occurring, but usually owners will not present the dog to their family veterinarian for examination because the dog is comfortable and apparently seeing well. In a recent study, .Sometimes iris cysts are the first clinical sign noted by the family veterinarian but it would be very easy for a GPDVM to not detect the presence of iris cysts. They can range from light to dark brown, and when a beam of light is directed on them, it passes through the cysts transillumination. The light brown cysts can be ghostlike and nearly completely transparent, making them very hard to detect. There are no hard and fast rules here, however—while it is uncommon for free-floating iris cysts to accompany GRPU, it is not impossible. Rarely, iridociliary cysts in dogs with GRPU contain blood. Most of these cysts would not be visible unless the pupil was dilated. Note their transparency. The dark brown dot above the right-hand cyst is a small cyst that ruptured and flattened out, its brown membrane sticking to the anterior lens capsule. This dog also has early immature cataracts. To further complicate matters, eyes enucleated from dogs with GRPU often demonstrate tiny iridociliary cysts microscopically but cysts are often not detectable clinically in these same eyes prior to enucleation. The cysts are often hidden from view behind the base of the iris, and often not visible clinically even after pupillary dilation. Much more research is needed to help define the relationship if any between these two entities. GRPU is a pigmenting disease. This means that dark brown microscopic flecks of pigment are free-floating, like dust in the air, inside the anterior chamber and end up sticking to surfaces inside the eye, especially the anterior lens capsule. One theory is that iris cysts cause glaucoma, 5 and another theory is that complex auto-immune mechanisms trigger pigment dispersion inside the eye and cause glaucoma. Note streaks and clumps of pigment stippling the anterior lens capsule. Early immature cataracts are also present. Present in the early stage of the disease, continuing into the middle and late stages. The normal intraocular pressure IOP range in dogs is about 10—20 mmHg. In retrospect, this is usually the very earliest clinical sign that the owner notices, years before the dog is in crisis, but the owner and GPDVM do not realize that the redness of the conjunctiva is due to GRPU; it is assumed to be due to allergies allergic conjunctivitis because the redness resolves when topical steroid eyedrops or ointment is applied to the eyes —until the next flareup of redness occurs, which prompts a cycle of another round of treatment. The fibrin in GRPU dogs might not dissolve at all, or dissolve only partially with medication. The fibrin often has tiny clots of blood admixed with it. Because Golden Retrievers are wonderful, uncomplaining dogs, they will not usually let their owners know that their glaucomatous eyes are bothering them. Many dogs with end-stage GRPU blinded by glaucoma end up having both eyes removed. Other more cosmetic surgical choices are available that are discussed in the glaucoma article. However, dogs with GRPU should not have the intravitreal injection of gentamicin pharmacologic ablation procedure performed, because it would create additional uveitis and discomfort in these dogs. If a dog with GRPU blinded by glaucoma had high uncontrollable IOP s and was not healthy enough to undergo surgery, a therapeutic dilemma occurs, and often these dogs end up being euthanized because their quality of life with unrelenting migraine headaches is unacceptable, which underscores the tragedy of this disease. It cannot be emphasized too often, that early detection and lifetime treatment is the key to saving the vision in affected dogs. Dogs diagnosed with GRPU do not pass the exam, and should not be bred. Unfortunately the overall prognosis for the eyes is guarded with many eyes becoming blind due to glaucoma. Glaucoma is a painful disease in which the pressure inside the eye increases and causes damage to the structures responsible for vision. Elevated intraocular pressure results in the clinical signs that you may have noted at home cloudy eye, redness, squinting. The longer the pressure in the eye is elevated, the more damage occurs to the structures in the eye responsible for vision, eventually resulting in permanent blindness. In a normal eye, fluid is constantly produced by the ciliary body and drained out the iridocorneal angle also called the drainage angle. The iridocorneal angle has a net-like meshwork with large spaces through which the fluid flows. Secondary glaucoma is caused by obstruction of drainage of fluid from the eye through the iridocorneal angle. Because the duration of pressure elevation is a critical factor for prognosis, acute glaucoma is an emergency and should be treated as quickly as possible to decrease the pressure. The disease causes pain and headaches when the pressure is elevated. Glaucoma is unfortunately difficult to treat and not all cases can be resolved. The goals of therapy are to maintain a normal intraocular pressure and treat the underlying cause of the glaucoma. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the disease many animals lose vision despite treatment. For blind, painful eyes permanent resolution of glaucoma is recommended via enucleation removal of the eye , intrascleral prosthesis replacing the contents of the eye with silicone , or chemical ciliary body ablation destruction of the ciliary body with an intraocular injection. Not all options are appropriate for every patient and here are pros and cons to each of these treatments, which we are happy to discuss.

They are easily identifiable due to their flat, wrinkly face, curly tail, and snorty, loud breathing. A Pug is typically 10 to 13 inches tall and weighs 14 to 18 pounds. They have short coats that are typically fawn tan or black. Caring for a Pug Pugs are a very friendly dog breed that thrive on attention from their owners. They are people pleasers and like to feel included in the day-to-day happenings in their home. Pugs are a brachycephalic breed. This means they have short muzzles, flat faces, narrow nostrils, and narrow airways—and often have an elongated soft palate. The elongated soft palate can cause a blockage to the windpipe entrance, creating the typically loud snoring and breathing noises they produce. Due to their flat faces, Pugs breathe with more effort than dogs with a normal-size muzzle. This creates swallowed air, which leads to Pugs being gassier than most dogs. It also means that Pugs do not do very well in overly hot climates or with extreme exercise. As a result, Pugs do best as primarily indoor dogs, with controlled excursions outside. While their coat is short, they do shed quite a bit. Regular grooming can help to manage their shedding. Pug Health Issues Pugs are prone to many health issues. Most are related to their brachycephalic conformation. Fortunately, many of their potential health problems can be managed with the assistance of your veterinarian. Since dogs use their airways to cool themselves, this increased effort for Pugs leaves them more predisposed to overheating. To keep your Pug safe, follow these guidelines: Avoid taking your Pug outside during the hottest parts of the day Avoid strenuous exercise for your Pug during hot weather Provide consistent access to cool, clean water Excess weight can increase breathing difficulties and make it easier for a Pug to overheat. Keeping your Pug at a healthy weight or on a weight-control diet to prevent obesity—when prescribed by a veterinarian—will help minimize risk. Respiratory Distress The narrow airway of a Pug also means that they are more prone to respiratory distress. If your Pug becomes stressed or distressed, they breathe even harder. This harsh breathing causes their already narrow airways to collapse further, which makes it even harder for them to breathe. Without intervention, this can progress to the point of low oxygen levels and collapse. Avoiding stress and keeping your Pug calm can help to avoid true respiratory distress. If you are noticing heavy or distressed breathing, contact your veterinarian or an emergency vet clinic immediately. This is a simple procedure that can be done at the same time as spay or neuter surgery. Your veterinarian may also recommend surgery to correct an elongated soft palate if they have severe respiratory problems. Allergies and Ear Infections Pugs are especially prone to skin allergies and ear infections. These problems can start to show up as early as one year of age. Since Pugs have narrow ear canals and deep folds in the skin around their face, they can collect debris and bacteria more easily. Regular cleaning also allows you to check the ears and skin to identify inflammation and seek care early. Skin allergies are not curable, but seeking medications from a veterinarian and doing preventive bathing and ear cleaning to prevent infections caused by allergies will help to keep your Pug comfortable and happy. Dental Disease Pugs have small jaws, but they have the same number of teeth as other dog breeds. As a result, many of their teeth are crooked and crowded. Just like in people, crowded and crooked teeth can lead to increased buildup of food between their teeth. The result is increased risk for gingivitis, infection, and dental disease. Over time, this can lead to tooth loss and pain. Daily tooth brushing is key to control and prevent inflammation. In addition, annual dental cleanings under anesthesia by your veterinarian starting at 1—2 years of age will help to identify infection and periodontal disease early. Ultimately, diseased teeth should be removed as early as possible to avoid pain, but diligent dental care can help prevent tooth loss. Eye Injuries A problem that is unique to Pugs is the risk of eye injury. All of these constitute an emergency, and your pet should be taken to the vet immediately. Without rapid treatment, these injuries can result in permanent damage or even loss of an eye. This condition affects the hips of a dog and happens when blood flow to the top of the femur is restricted, leading to a very painful condition that will eventually lead to arthritis. What to Feed a Pug Diet is an important part of maintaining the health of a Pug, especially since obesity is common for the breed. Obesity increases the risk of heat stroke and breathing problems. To help keep your Pug at a healthy weight , talk with your veterinarian about a weight management or calorie-restricted diet to help prevent obesity. Make sure that you are feeding your Pug a dog food that is appropriate for their life stage puppy, adult, or senior. These age-specific diets ensure that your Pug is getting the nutrients they need to thrive at every age. Some Pugs have food allergies that contribute to skin problems; your veterinarian will discuss feeding trials and special protein ingredients to test for and treat food allergies. How to Feed a Pug Pugs do best when fed 2 or 3 small meals a day. So when feeding dry food, the shape and size of the kibble is important to prevent choking. Some companies make foods specific to Pugs, designed to be easier to eat and help manage Pug-specific medical problems. While they do have moments of high energy, they are generally calm couch potatoes. Without mental stimulation, Pugs can become mischievous and develop problematic behaviors or find destructive activities to keep them busy. Be sure to schedule your outdoor playtime around peak sun hours to avoid risk of your Pug overheating. Aggression is rare—especially if your Pug has been well socialized during their puppy years and has a solid training foundation. Pug Training Pugs are typically very food-motivated, which makes them relatively easily to train. They are not physically good candidates for high-energy exercise, such as running and agility, but low-key activities like casual walks or a quick game of fetch are fun for them. Fun Activities for Pugs. Caring for your Pug Pugs can be highly entertaining dogs due to their big personalities and clownish nature. They generally do well in family environments where they have lots of company all of the time as they love to spend time with everybody. Pugs and barking As with any dog, your Pug is likely to make noise in one form or another. How much your dog barks will be down to them as an individual. Training and socialisation When it comes to training Pugs, although they are a clever breed they can also be very strong willed. Training needs to be ongoing and firm but fair. You can start positive, reward-based training from day one, whether you get your Pug old or young. Exercise Pugs can be prone to gaining weight that can make breathing problems worse, so it is important to keep them active and avoid any weight gain. Your Pug will need up to an hour of exercise a day. This should include shorter walks, with extra playtime and lots of brain-stimulating activities. Several shorter walks throughout the day can help to stop them from becoming too tired or overheated, which is a great way to keep them active throughout the day. Keep a close eye on your Pug as they can tire easily due to their difficulties getting enough oxygen. As soon as you start to notice them struggling to breathe, stop and make sure they get enough of a rest. You will also need to avoid exercising them in the heat as this can cause even more problems since they can be at higher risk of heatstroke. Grooming Even though their coats are short, Pugs can still shed loads. Luckily, they tend to love being groomed as it means a lot of attention all on them. Pay close attention to the folds in their skin, as these are the perfect breeding ground for bacterial and fungal infections if left damp. You can teach your Pug from an early age to love tooth brushing and nail clipping so you can keep those pearly whites and paws in great condition. Pugs and children Pugs adore company and really love people of all ages. They often get on well with children, especially if the Pug loves to play. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and play with dogs with care and kindness, to prevent any issues. Always supervise children and vulnerable people with your Pug and make sure you can recognise the signs of unhappiness or anxiety in your dog to help avoid any conflicts. Pugs and other pets Pugs are known for getting along well with other pets and dogs. Introductions still need to be done carefully, though, just in case. Good, kind training will also help them become well-rounded dogs that keep calm in new situations. Your vet or vet nurse will be able to tell you how much your dog should be eating. If you give your dog an occasional treat or use treats for training, remember to take this into account and reduce their daily food allowance. You should try to feed your dog at the same time every day to get them into a routine. Remember to leave a gap after eating and before exercising. Beware unusually cheap puppies as they could come from a puppy farm. These breeders must do extra health tests and meet higher standards for breeding. Breeders If you buy from a breeder, make sure your puppy will have been well socialised and have all necessary health checks and vaccinations. Pugs are often considered to have a very gentle temperament, and this is supported by the study which showed very low levels of aggression in the breed. While this may make the Pug a good family pet from a human perspective, owners also need to consider the quality of life that the dog endures. Although these results provide evidence for some positive aspects of Pug health, they sadly highlight the Pug overall has substantially poorer health than non-Pugs. The findings suggest that many Pugs may suffer from seriously compromised health and welfare because of the extreme body shape that humanity expects of this breed. To correct this, the body shape of Pugs must shift towards a more moderate, and less extreme, conformation if we are to reduce these health and welfare issues for Pugs in the UK. It is time now that we focus on the health of the dog rather than the whims of the owner when we are choosing what type of dog to own. Widespread ownership of Pugs with extreme facial and body conformations should be discouraged until measures are in place to ensure stricter and more acceptable breed standards. These findings will also play a vital part in continuing to develop ways to encourage would-be owners to do their research and to help them understand the potential health and welfare issues that badly bred Pugs can face. We aim to curb the increasing numbers of rogue breeders, who are outside of any sphere of influence and are producing dogs with no regard for welfare and continue to urge would-be owners and breeders to think carefully about any breeding or buying decisions when it comes to Pugs, and make use of health testing, evidence-based resources and expert advice available on The Kennel Club website. Vet teams see pugs with these distressing health problems — from breathing difficulties to eye ulcers and painful spine abnormalities - in veterinary practices across the UK on a daily basis. Kujo as a pup Kujo will not be aggressive to the point of biting someone but he will let you know your on his moms me territory. I often let Kujo lose if I'm in the barn by myself tending to my animals he keeps me informed of possible dangers. He did once scare a guy that unexpectedly showed up on the grounds Kujo's bark and low growling did deter the stranger and he did leave. I told him the dog could get aggressive and was trained.
